Fans? I've been pretty into them for the last 3+ years..been looking forward to their next album for that long. Well, finally we have some stuff about it to look forward to!
For those unfamiliar, I guess I'd describe them as indie progressive-pop/rock. But more specifically, like a proggier Sigur Ros, or shoegazer-pop/prog.
https://myspace.com/mew
https://www.mewx.info/wp/ (https://www.mewx.info/wp/)
We have information on No More Stories. Yes, that is the official title of Mew’s fifth album - those who have heard it, call it a MASTERPIECE (we knew that already). The album will be released on August 19th 2009 in Finland (and most likely this is the same date for all of Scandinavia) - it will also be digitally available two days prior (August 17th). But fear not, Mew will release an EP before that. The extended play will be out on July 1st - just before the summer festivals.
Remember, you heard it here first - we’ll be back shortly to bring you more extensive information about the album.
The first single from No More Stories is called Repeater Beater and it premieres in Finland on May 29th at YleX-radio channel at 9:10am and it plays exclusively during that whole weekend. This is supposedly the date in other Nordic countries as well. You may buy the single digitally on June 1st.
In addition to Repeater Beater, the EP (released on July 1st) contains one new song from the album, two live-performances and a b-side. The album is produced by Rich Costey who has previously worked with Muse, Glasvegas and Franz Ferdinand among others. Plus - as we know - he is the man behind Mew’s Frengers (2003) as well.
-
Can't wait!
-
I'm psyched as well. I love Frengers.
-
well the cover is nothing to write-home about, but if the music is good of course it won't matter.
August 25th US Release

Epic Danish rockers Mew don't do anything halfway. They make big music with big guitars and big vocals that suggest nothing less than the beautiful, horrible end of the world. And they're readying their follow-up to 2006 breakout LP And the Glass-Handed Kites for release August 25 in the U.S., August 24 in the UK, and August 17 in Scandinavia via Columbia. (That mutated circus clown/butterfly thing is the cover.) And, going with the prog-like scope, the album title isn't a word or even a group of words as much as it's a poem:
No more stories
Are told today
I'm sorry
They washed away
No more stories
The world is grey
I'm tired
Let's wash away
Yep, that's the album title. (How about we just call it No More Stories... for the time being?) As if that wasn't crazy enough, the tracklisting features tiny photos of the same circus clown/butterfly shown on the cover as the titles for two tracks. Yes, the track titles are pictures, not words.
Mew hit the road this summer, touring with Nine Inch Nails in Europe and playing the Pitchfork Music Festival in July.
Check out the No More Stories... tracklist below.

AWESOME!
-
go hear a new song "Introducing Palace Players"

just heard the new album. really deep with moods and kinds of different songs. Happier..I dunno, I am very optimistic about this album. They may have finally made that breakthrough record I knew they were capable of.

-
There's a band named after the best pokemon?! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU- *head asplodes*
-
Love Frengers, enjoy Glass Handed Kites, and recently bought No More Stories. Haven't really listened to it yet, but the bits I've heard sounded alright.
-
If there's a glitch, your an ostrich.
That's the only album I know (Glass handed Kites), I need to check this one out soon.
-
Been listening to this one a lot lately. Definitely a grower, but its growing quickly. Favorites so far are probably "Introducing Palace Players", "Beach" and "Vaccine". Also really digging "Hawaii" and "Tricks of the Trade"
-
No love for Sometimes Life Isn't Easy Zepp? That's my favorite from the album.
-
Actually I think I just forgot to add that one. I guess that should be on this list too. I'd say I still prefer the first three, but it definitely should be grouped in with the second three.
-
So apparently, "New Terrain", when played backwards, becomes a completely different song called "Nervous" (which is included as a bonus track on the vinyl version).
Interesting....
-
Really?
*looks up*
-
So I dunno if this is the most recent thread on this band, but I've been listening to Frengers today, and I like it a lot. She Came Home For Christmas is AWESOME.
-
Apparently this band is good so I'll have to give them a fair listen soon.
-
So I dunno if this is the most recent thread on this band, but I've been listening to Frengers today, and I like it a lot. She Came Home For Christmas is AWESOME.
For some reason I think there might have been a more recent thread, but I can't remember. Yeah, She Came Home for Christmas is a great song. Frengers is the album that really made me love Mew. I may not have won that round of the roulette, but I'm glad I got you into this band!
-
I had the song you sent me stuck in my head all day today :lol
-
Good man. I think this means I win your song roulette forever, actually. Just saying
-
Anybody who thinks their albums are good needs to see them live. It's like a bazillion times awesomer. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. (Their concert DVD is pretty fabulous too... although it's a bit tough to get a hold of)
-
Believe me, once Mew and Devin Townsend cross that damn Virginia border I'll be the first to buy tickets to see them.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbeS8O-qfSM
Does it get any more perfect than that?
-
wow..
-
Actually... yes. Yes it does.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TInmUYXUXiE
From 4:30 on may very well be the most epically epic 5 minutes of music ever written.
-
just getting in to this band and it is quickly becoming one of my favorites. amazing.
-
Just bought No More Stories yesterday and it's really amazing.
-
It's definitely one of the best albums that exist.
-
I like everything but the first track which I find a bit dull... :-\
-
Better version of "New Terrain"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDw3CinkTzU
-
:tup :tup
I think that's the reverse effects that bothers me in the original version.
-
If you play it backwards you get a new song called "Nervous."
-
That's what I've heard, and I find it really cool! It's just that it ruins a bit the sound of the song for me.
Anyways, second album recommendations?
-
Frengers or And the Glass Handed Kites. My personal preference is Frengers
-
Yeah, Frengers is the way to go.
Or if you really wanna have your mind blown, get the Live in Copenhagen DVD. Songs from both Frengers and Glass Handed Kites
-
Bump.
I should not have waited so long to get Live in Copenhagen, wow it is amazing!
-
I dusted off Frengers again. I listened to it about five times and then shelved it for whatever reason. Still haven't really digested it fully but I'm pretty sure I like it :lol I have No More Stories as well but I'm waiting a bit to listen to that one.
-
I guess their second album would be called Mewtwo :neverusethis::neverusethis::neverusethis::neverusethis:
-
That's not what their second album is called at all.
-
I actually revisited both Half the World is Watching and A Triumph of Man again last week. There's some good work on both of those albums, even though many of the songs ended on Frengers. The versions seem a lot different. I also have the bonus discs for those to check out still when they were reissued.
I think if you really love Frengers, both of them are worth hearing.
-
^^^ Agreed. Most of "Half the World..." ended up on Frengers, but with the exception of "She Came Home For Christmas", all of "A Triumph For Man" is different. That album is worth it for "Panda" alone.
I've also recently picked up a few 7" and 10" singles... apparently they've got a ton of B-sides that aren't on any albums at all (e.g., "Like Chaser", "Killer", "Drown", "Safe as Houses", "In Time Do You Forget", and "Animals of Many Colors"). Some of them are pretty good.
-
Comforting Sounds is so fucking epic.
-
Comforting Sounds is so fucking epic.
Have you seen the version from Live in Copenhagen? It's like epic squared... then squared again. Seeing that song performed live a few years ago was what made me go from "hey this band is pretty cool" to "OMFG I <3 MEW FOREVER!"
-
I really hope Mew comes south one day...

Hello second time that joke has been made on this page
-
Hello my reading comprehension fails.
That or I didn't bother reading the thread. Forgive me, your highness.

Why are you old guys always so mad at me?
-
Didn't mean to be mad. I seriously hadn't read the thread, so I fail.

No, I've heard good things about that though. I should check it out.
-
Yeah, Mew is one of those bands that are unbelievable live. I had the great privilege of seeing them live three times, including their first ever U.S. gig, at a tiny brick and concrete dive called Berbati's Pan in Portland which is no more. It was simply mind blowing. Never pass up a chance to see this band live!
-
they are cool visually live, but they aren't so into mixing with the fans. I saw them twice, and neither time did they come out to say hello, sign, etc.
-
Comforting Sounds might just be the most epic thing in indie rock ever.

welp, time to get the live version
-
Hey everyone.
Which one of the first two albums is more worth buying? Haven't listened to either yet because I want to buy at least one of their releases.
-
Okay, I'm checking this album out. Quad convinced me.
-
Hey everyone.
Which one of the first two albums is more worth buying? Haven't listened to either yet because I want to buy at least one of their releases.
1st 2, as in A Triumph of Man and Half the World is Watching
or the previous 2, Frengers and And the Glass Handed Kites.
-
I already have/love Frengers and Glass Kites.
I'm talking about their very first two, A Triumph of Man and Half the World is Watching.
-
I'd go with Half the World is Watching. Although trying to track down a hard copy of either of them, to ship to the States, at a reasonable price may be a tall task. Since I was looking for either of those very 2 discs a few weeks ago and most of the prices to import were pretty high. I never did check Ebay which probably would make sense.
-
Picked this album up last week in Borders. god, it's amazing.
-

Hmm... I think I disagree. I'd go with A Triumph for Man. 5 out of the 8 songs on "Half the World..." are repeated on Frengers. Sure, they're different versions, but if you're looking for totally different material, A Triumph For Man only has one repeat ("She Came Home For Christmas"). Triumph has some killer tunes too... (e.g., "Wheels Over Me", "Panda", "Beautiful Balloon" and "Web")
-
Frengers is fucking amazing.
That is all.
-
AH NO MORE STORIES IS SO AWESOME AHHHHHHHH
-
Silas and Bo, they got tired
-
and they'll call you once a week!
That's one of their best songs.
-
YOU'RE ONE OF THE BEST SONGS
BRO
But really this is really good, for sure for sure
-
Silas the Magic Car is my favorite Mew song. When I first got that album I drove around with that song on repeat.
-
YOU'RE ONE OF THE BEST SONGS
BRO
(https://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lg8uss0sjX1qad94m.png)
Anyway, if Frengers didn't exist, Silas the Magic Car would definitely be my favorite. Even as it is, it might be. I've really never bothered to try and compare their songs enough, so I don't have a specific favorite.
-
Silas was always a standout for me, but since I listened to it as a full album I never checked to see what the song was called for the longest time :lol
-
I am on the verge of bumping Kites to 4.5 stars. The 2nd half of it has some of their best music, it's just not quite as cohesive as the 1st half. "An Envoy to the Open Fields," "White Lips Kissed," "Saviours of Jazz Ballet (Fear Me, December)"
-
Kites was the slowest grower ever for me, but now it's my favorite Mew album and actually one of my favorites of all time. Hard to believe I once didn't like it, but now consider it a masterpiece. 5/5 for me.
-
"White Lips Kissed"
One of my absolute favorites. <3
-
Listening to Frengers for the first time. I don't see why people are bitching about the guy's voice. Sure he pretty much sounds like a girl, but he still has a great voice regardless.
Anyways, I like very much.
-
I love the shoot out of his voice.
-
I don't own any of their albums, but I like the songs that I've heard by them. Any recommendations?
-
Frengers is the place to start.
-
I finally bought Half the World is Watching and A Triumph of Man. Maybe the biggest thing about them is the production is excellent. These reissues may have been remastered or something, because I didn't expect them to sound nearly as good as they do.
-
Yeah they were reissued in 2006, I think.
Just out of random curiosity (and because I might cover this for a live event at school), does anyone else think "Repeater Beater" would make a cool chiptune and bass guitar cover?
-
Yeah... so Comforting Sounds might be the greatest song ever written.
-

YES! :tup
-
Yeah... so Comforting Sounds might be the greatest song ever written.
ONE OF US ONE OF US ONE OF US ONE OF US.
Scary thing is I'm not sure if that's their best song or not. I mean, its incredible, but they've got so much incredible stuff...
-
Yeah... so Comforting Sounds might be one of the greatest songs ever written.
-
What's their best song then? I'm curious.
-
I don't know. That's just the thing.
-
a good intro track I find is Zookeeper's Boy. But there are others, Am I Wry? No, Special, Introducing Palace Players.
-
Am I Wry? No is incredible. Probably my second favorite on the album.
I also really like She Came Home For Christmas and Snow Brigade.
-
She Came Home for Christmas is kind of like Mew's "Heartattack in a Layby." Its just so heartbreakingly sad.
-
I have yet to get Frengers. Already has my love affair with No More Stories last year and I've been absorbing And the Glass Handed Kites for quite a while now. It's weird in that I like everything I hear on it, it's just...difficult to listen to??
-
She Came Home for Christmas is kind of like Mew's "Heartattack in a Layby." Its just so heartbreakingly sad.
I agree with this.
-
Yeah Sonata, Glass Handed Kites is definitely the hardest album to swallow. Its got a lot of great stuff, but its sort of hard to get your head around listening to the whole thing. AND GET FRENGERS DANGIT.
-
AND GET FRENGERS DANGIT.
Seconded. My favorite album of theirs by a considerable margin.
-
What's their best song then? I'm curious.
Yeah... so Comforting Sounds might be one of the greatest songs ever written.
Theres your answer.

"Am I Wry? No" and "Special" are my favorites so far.

I think this thread needs some White Lips Kissed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZTvb1C-ifQ

COMFORTING SOUNDS
FUCKING THIS
-
Just listened to Frengers, posted how I felt in the 'what full length album did you just listen to' thread.
-
Just did the second half of Comforting Sounds on Audiosurf.
HOLY SHIT
-
Wherever should have made it to Frengers. I love the hell out of the Frengers outtake version of that song.
Tsin Tsi, too. That song is really fun.
-
look at you mr mew bside genius
-
Nah, they're both from the debut. Haven't heard the Frengers outtakes versions of those songs though. Stupid Japanese bonus tracks...
-

If there's any Triumph song that should've made Frengers and didn't, my vote would have to go to "Panda".
look at you mr mew bside genius
Mew are so ridiculous with their B-sides. There are SO many of them, and half of them are only available on like promo 10" vinyl or something. I'm making every effort to track them all down, but I'm sure I'm still missing a couple...
-
If there's any Triumph song that should've made Frengers and didn't, my vote would have to go to "Panda".
Oh, definitely, that one's great.
I was only speaking of the ones that had actually been rerecorded for Frengers.
...unless Panda has been rerecorded as well. I don't know about that one.
-
Oh, yeah... I don't actually know which ones were/weren't recorded for Frengers. Didn't realize that was the context. My bad.
-
Sup guys. Just wanted to chime in to say I got Frengers last week and have been pretty much spinning it non stop. "Am I Wry? No" is a standout so far but every track is awesome, and I'm a sucker for high-range singing so I've got nothing but love for the vocals!
-
:tup "Am I Wry, No?" is fantastic. But so is every other track on the album. Wait till those really click for ya.

COMFORTING SOUNDS

FROM MY BUTT
I CAN SEE YOUR HOUSE
(Am I the only one who can't unhear that)
-
It's funny how on HTWIWM it's completely audible as "boat" but on Frengers he can't say it right.
-
I thought it was "bed" for the longest time.
-
I thought it was "bed" for the longest time.
Me too. Wasn't until I saw the video that it finally made sense.
-
And the Glass Handed Kites has grown on me considerably this playthough (on track 10 atm). Not sure why, possibly because Mew sound awesome on these headphones, but every song is just jumping out to me as much better than before.
edit: interesting, it seems to have the best mix of their three main albums too.
-
There's some great stuff on there.
I especially like "White Lips Kissed". The vocals are so killer on that one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZTvb1C-ifQ
-
Oh hey, so that Mew band is pretty good.
-
I really want to see them live, they seem pretty great from the videos. Especially Jonas.
ALSO I WANT A NEW ALBUM (I guess I should get their first two)
-
They're beyond pretty great. They're like... cosmically fantastic. The ONLY negative about seeing them live was that the place was packed with too many hipsters who were obviously there more for hipster cred than for the music. One guy who was in front of me literally spent almost the entire show trying to hit on these Danish girls who were there to see the band, until somebody finally told him to shut the fuck up. It was fairly upsetting how many people were just talking through the music all night.
-
Frengers is in my top 5 of all time.

Were they playing at the Williamsburg Waterfront?
-
Nah... they're nowhere near big enough for that place. Webster Hall.
-
I hope they come down a bit southward next time they feel like touring over here. I think seeing them live would make my life.
-
Bump.
Decided to check out Frengers a few days ago because Ryan and Zack has talked about it quite a lot over the last year, I even bought it fairly cheap at the store a couple of months ago, but never got around to checking it out back then.
Anyhow, been spinning the album for the last days and it is beyond amazing. :hefdaddy
Comforting Sounds might be one of the most epic songs ever, and the whole album is just very catchy and fantastic from start to finish. I really hope the rest of their stuff is as good! :hefdaddy
-
Goddamn it Zantera why would you not mention me? Just because I don't go overboard with my love of some albums like BON IVER BON IVER BON IVER BON IVER... :P
j/k. But you should be ashamed for waiting this long to check out that masterpiece of an album.
-
I also finally got Frengers on CD recently, although Zack already showed me it when I went to his house half a year ago. And it is indeed pretty coolio
-
You guys are so late.
Frengers is their strongest, but it's also 2+ albums worth of work then super polished into a third album, so isn't really fair. It certainly not massively ahead of their latest two albums too, which are equally worth getting hold of.
-
Well Matt, in all seriousness I know you and a few others have been gimping it a lot as well, so I wouldn't say that it's only because of Zack and Ryan doing their overhyping-thing.
I've been meaning to check it out for a while, now just felt like the perfect time, and it was. :heart
-
Yep I checked it out a few weeks ago, its awesome!
-
I've been checking out No More Stories now, and wow... I might even like it more then Frengers.
Amazing album, and not a single "bad" song on it, as awesome as Frengers is, I think No More Stories might be stronger as an album, though Frengers still has a couple of individual songs which makes it pretty rad.
Still, this band! :hefdaddy
I've also ordered And the Glass Handed Kites, excited about that one too.
-
Glass Handed Kites is pretty rad. Its more like NMS than Frengers is. It also has "The Zookeeper's Boy" <3 <3 <3 <3

-
What's the one on the far left, with the GHK logo and the face eating a dude?
-
10" "The Zookeeper's Boy" single. Bought it because, as far as I know, that's the only release that has the song "Safe as Houses".
-
I've been listening to And the Glass Handed Kites quite a bit this week, great album.
Maybe not as "instant clicking" as Frengers and No More Stories, I felt like AtGHK needs more spins to fully appreciate. Hard to pick any favorites from the 3-4 spins I've given it, but "White Lips Kissed" stood out from the first spin. The "I won't cry when the silver lining shows"-line gets me everytime. It's also easy to see why "The Zookeeper's Boy" is such a favorite for people.
-
Okay, it's official, this board owes me an external HD for all the awesome recommendations. :lol
Comforting Sounds might be one of the most gloriously beautiful, epic songs ever. Think I know what band I'm listening to this week :D
-
Bout time!
-
Should probably check out the first two albums as well now. I really dig both "Saliva" and "Wheels Over Me" from Eggs Are Funny, so yeah.
As of now, I'd say No More Stories is my favorite, followed by AtGHK and Frengers. (the latter has some of the band's best songs, but also a few songs that aren't that special, AtGHK is probably more consistent)

bump.
they've played a bunch of new songs live over the last couple of weeks on tour.
Here's some videos
https://allmediareviews.blogspot.com/2014/11/new-mew-songs-live.html
-
I was lucky enough to see them live, and it was amazing. If the new songs were any indication of how good the album will be, it will totally be an AOTY contender for next year.
Overall it makes me a bit sad how criminally underrated/underappreciated this band is around here. It's hard for me to think of any other band on a hotter streak than Mew right now. Frengers, And the Glass Handed Kites and No More Stories... wow. Three spectacular albums. Personally, AtGHK is my favorite. It's progressive, epic and has all those shoegazy moments combined with beautiful dream pop melodies. No More Stories is a close second, and Frengers i would probably put as nr3 for now. It has some of their best songs, but there are a few songs that doesn't do AS much for me. About 50% of the album is brilliance, and the other half is mixed between decent-good-great.
-
I love Frengers and AtGHK but I've never listened to No More Stories. The former two are both fantastic though, Comforting Sounds has to be one of the best songs I've ever heard hnngg :heart

Not sure what to think of the artwork, but this is easily one of my most anticipated albums of the year. Mew are on fire, and in my opinion they are even better than most of the DTF sweethearts (PT and Anathema for example) and so I can't wait for the new album. They played some new songs when I saw them (Satellites was one of them), and if the album as a whole is as good as those songs, we are in for a treat.
-
yeah I'm probably more excited for this over anything PT/SW and Anathema would release, I suppose largely due to the fact it's been 5 years.
also I guess this is the tracklist
01 Satellites
02 Witness
03 The Night Believer
04 Making Friends
05 Clinging to a Bad Dream
06 My Complications
07 Water Slides
08 Interview the Girls
09 Rows
10 Cross the River on Your Own

A new Mew album. Awesome. I'll be all over it when it comes out, I love those guys.

North American Tour

it's been 9 years since I saw them in Minneapolis, but October 5th I should finally get a chance again.

sad news: Bo Madsen, Mew's guitarist of 20 years, has left the band. I just wish he had at least stayed with them until after their upcoming tour.
https://www.mewx.info/bo-madsen-leaves-mew/
Bad news, guys. There had been rumours lately, but now we have a statement from Mew:
“After 20 years playing together in Mew, the band and Bo Madsen have decided to part ways for the time being. At present the rest of us will continue with Mew. We are happy to tell you that guitarist Mads Wegner will be joining us on our upcoming shows, and we look forward to seeing you all out there.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
–Jonas, Johan and Silas.”

Definitely DO NOT MISS THEM if you have the chance to see them live.
I guess Kimbra is supposed to be at the show in NYC.
-
Nice! I will catch them in 20 days when they return to Europe. Saw them not too long ago (last year), but there are some setlist changes and I'm familiar with the +- songs now, which weren't released at the time, so it might be even better now.
-
the +- songs seems to be even better live (like Rows namely), so you may notice that.
Btw, Kimbra did join them on stage the other night:

Fucking Hell. I honestly thought with Bo leaving we may never see another Mew album, and if we did I expected the normal 5 year cycle! To get a new album so soon is amazing news.
-
yeah, this caught a lot of us offguard, in a good way.
Mads Wegner, whose been their touring guitarist, played on some of this album.

Bo Madsen I guess has an upcoming solo record as well.

I'm hoping Bo will return in a few years the same way Johan did.
I do find Mew pretty amazing in their consistency (from Frengers onwards) and that makes it's really, really hard to rank their albums. 'No More Stories' is probably the weakest (Although still great). 'Frengers' perhaps next mainly because Symmetry drops it down. '+ -' in second place although it's pretty much perfect but 'Glass Handed Kites' is actually perfect therefore in first place.

Hmm after a couple of plays of 'Visuals' I'm thinking this might be their weakest album (Frengers onwards). There are some good moments but can't shake the feeling this feels rather Mew by-numbers, leftovers from the + - sessions. Mew albums tend to grow on me so there is hope - but it just feels somewhat lacking this time.
-
Nah this is better than +- for sure and I like it maybe even more than Frengers as well.
-
Nah this is better than +- for sure and I like it maybe even more than Frengers as well.
+ - is my second fav only behind Kites. The second half of + - in particular is an amazing run of songs. I'll give Visuals a few more plays over the weekend and hopefully it'll grow.
-
Right now I would probably say:
1. Kites
2. No More Stories
3. Visuals
4. Frengers
5. +-
6. Triumph
7. Half the World
I really like the top 5 though. For me, the first 2 albums are still enjoyable but more patchy. The highlights aren't as many or big, but the albums overall are still enjoyable to have listened to. I agree that +- has some killer songs though, Rows is amazing and had it ended 1 ½ - 2 minutes earlier (basically when the synth reaches its climax before the song goes on another 90 seconds or whatever with an instrumental outro) it could have been their best song even.

released today.
I still want to hear the Japanese bonus tracks.

Man it’s been 7 years since the last album? They aren’t broken up are they?
Edit: obviously not if they just played a show.

My comment at the top of this page pretty much holds true. I like Visuals, but it is their weakest album. Would very much welcome another album!
-
I think Visuals is my favorite of their albums actually.
