ITT, we discuss the good "core" bands out there (Metalcore, Deathcore, Math, Grind, etc). Despite being a usually overlooked genre type, theres definately a lot of talent and emotion in some of the bands belonging to these genres. So I'll start off and list some of my favorites.
Protest The Hero (Metal/Mathcore)- A generally liked band on this forum, they have some of the most daredevilish and technical music in the genre, and yet offer very catchy songs, despite a lot of their songs missing a chorus. From the extremely talented vocalist (An acquired taste perhaps, but definately talented) to the ever-changing time signatures from the drummer, this band has definately got a big future ahead of em...well, as big as 'core' groups get :P
Favorite Songs: Bloodmeat, Sequia Throne
Sequoia Throne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypCdGNe3Bvs (This song got me into them)
Between the Buried and Me (Progressive Metalcore)- Also one of the more popular bands among this forum, BTBAM is no doubt one of the most talented, bombastic, and 'progressive' bands this decade. They can go from brutal and pounding to soft and lighthearted in a matter of seconds without feeling too "jumpy". Throughout their somewhat short career, they have made significant progressions with each album, eventually culminating in the ever popular Colors.
Favorite Songs: Sun of Nothing, White Walls
White Walls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApNSnzQciTQ
The Human Abstract(Metal/Mathcore)- A very talented and young band, THA had became one of my favorites from the first time I heard them. Some of the melodies that they make in their songs just blow my mind sometimes, and their style is pretty unique among others. Although their latest album takes a less "math-like" approach, it continues to see a certain evolution of the band into an even more melody based style.
Favorite Songs: Vela, Together we Await the Storm, Breathing Life into Devices
Vela, Together we Await the Storm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u9KDMWJsAM
All Shall Perish (Deathcore)- Deathcore doesnt really get much respect...anywhere. Usually seen as one of the lowest forms of metal/hardcore music, many of the bands share the same sound wherever they go without much growth. However, ASP is definately not in that category. Extreme talent is evident in this band, from the mind-blowing drummer to the brutal riffs of the guitar. While most Deathcore bands really on breakdowns to carry their music, ASP's sheer technicality and emotion can carry them for miles. Now, there are breakdowns in the music, but they do not make the music.
Favorite Songs: Wage Slaves, The True Beast
The True Beast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw-z1s6eD34
Other Notable Mentions (That I didnt feel like typing out stuff for)
Born of Osiris
The Acacia Strain
Emmure (first album only)
Obscura
-
I'm a huge fan of BTBAM. Below is band names in italics and notable songs in paratheses.
I'm also a big fan of August Burns Red (Composure, Back Burner), Miss May I (A Dance With Aera Cura, Architect), and Bring Me The Horizon (Pray For Plagues, Diamonds Aren't Forever).
The first two can be good listens but the third is definitely an acquired taste.
-
I'm glad someone else likes The Human Abstract... I haven't heard of anyone else that likes them or has even heard of them, besides me. They really are a talented band. Also, my favorite song is Breathing Life into Devices as well ;)

Actually quite a few people here like them. Maybe they'll come out and present themselves ;D
-
Ugh, I have a feeling this thread is going to derail into a shit fight.
Until then, I'll throw out a list:
After the Burial
All That Remains
As I Lay Dying
August Burns Red
BTBAM (although I don't consider them to be metalcore, for reasons I won't argue here)
Bullet For My Valentine
Darkest Hour
The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Faceless
Misery Signals
Protest the Hero
Shadows Fall (old stuff)
SikTh
Still Remains
Unearth
-
I like BTBAM, Protest the Hero, and The Human Abstract. Can't think of any others, presently.
-
How BTBAM is counted as Metalcore is beyond me...
-
Huge fan of Suicide Silence :metal Mitch Lucker is an amazing vocalist and they put on an amazing live show. Also love As Blood Runs Black, they have a sick as hell drummer. August Burns Red = Masters of breakdowns. Carnifex is an amazing fucking band, love there guitar sound and there vocalist. Knights of the Abyss were amazing on Juggernaut. I too love Protest The Hero, the vocalist took a bit of getting used to at first, but I love him now. Through the Eyes of the Dead is an amazing band, I love there drummer and his orgasmic double bass patterns. And last but not least, Whitechapel. Love love love love love Phil Bozeman.
-
^ I don't listen to Suicide Silence that much but once in a while makes the listen amazing and August Burns Red is my favorite true metalcore band (since i don't consider BTBAM metalcore...).
-
Norma Jean. Also with Gwii on the SikTh love. As always :metal

I can't get into TBDM. I've heard great things about them from band members, ex band members and friends whoms musical taste I generally agree with. But, I just don't hear it. I've tried, very hard too. Maybe someday I'll get them.

This. Their music just didn't click with me.
-
Only album I have from Killswitch Engage is the End of Heartache. Its a pretty good album though, better as I listened to it more often (Though I dont listen to it that much). Favorite song off of it is Take This Oath. I love it :metal
-
I greatly enjoy Protest the Hero, am trying to get into The Human Abstact and BtBaM, and just can't get into the really "death"-y stuff like Suicide Silence. I saw them in concert with Static-X, Black Label Society, and Bury Your Dead, and I just couldn't get into SS.

imo daylight dies is a big step up. The next album however, is the generic of generic metalcore :sadpanda:

Try Black Valor off their new record, it's pretty cool. Other than that just keep trying, took me a while to get into them, I'm glad I didn't get Miasma first or else I wouldn't have gotten into them at all.

Botch - A criminally underrated mathcore band, they really help build the genre to what it is today.

Where's the Nintendocore love??
HORSE the Band - Pretty much THE band for Nintendocore. Recommended if you enjoy Metal mixed with Nintendo (obviously) and Pizza. Check out "A Natural Death" and "R. Borlax". Favourite Tracks: "Cutman", "Lord Gold Throneroom", "Murder" and "New York City"
iwrestledabearonce - Sorta Mathcore/Avant Garde Metal with some Nintendocore influences. Kinda similar to HORSE the Band. Check out the debut album "Its All Happening". Favourite Tracks: "You Ain't No Family", "Tastes Like Kevin Bacon"
Honourable mentions go to Sky Eats Airplane and I AM ERROR.
Mean.

Templestowe (https://www.myspace.com/templestowemetal)

-
Anyone into the whole "hardcore with electronic elements" trend?
TBH, I love listening to these bands and while many aren't serious, they're a lot of fun to listen too and the mix of hardcore and electronic music makes it even better. Bands I'd recommend are:
Asking Alexandria
I See Stars
We Came as Romans
Oh, and bump :P
-
Strong thread resurrection.
I've heard a few of the hardcore/electronic mixed bands. Most of what I heard were garbage, which is a shame, because there is some really strong potential for good music in that area.
-
Yeah, hwile there are a lot of ones that waste the potential, I really like the ones that I listed. Good stuff, but some may not like the vocals and whatever.
-
Listening to We Came As Romans now. I like the subtle use of electronic stuff. The overall music is kind of meh though. I've gotten really sick of modern chugga chugga bands; they dominate the scene now, and most of them can't play for shit.
I'll check out these other bands too.
-
This thread is causing my chest to tighten.
Indeed. Why did I come in here again?
Oh, I like BTBAM, and I liked Demon Hunter for a short period of time.
-
Metalcore is such a diverse genre now and days, it can mean anything from Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan to Protest the Hero or Killswitch Engaged. I would go so far as to say that it is my favorite genre of metal. When it is done right it can produce some grade A music. There are few Metalcore bands that I can't stand. I prefer the music to lean more toward the hardcore side though, the short aggressive songs are always great.
-
Hey Poseidon, do you like deathcore stuff, like Whitechapel? I've noticed we always had similar taste in music, so I was just wondering.
-
Only Deathcore I have heard was the first album by Bring Me the Horizon, and random deathcore bands my guild members played on ventrillo. There was one song that might have been Whitechapel where the dude is like "you will never fuck again!!"
-
Oh ok, I was just curious. Whitechapel's not my favorite band or anything, but the only "popular" deathcore band I could think of atm, lol.
-
The song I was thinking of is Vicer Exciser, I might have to check out more of their stuff as that song was pretty good.
Right now I am listening to DEP's Calculating Infinity, such a fucking crazy album.
-
This might be technical death metal and not -core but whatever. The debut album by Son Of Aurelius (https://www.myspace.com/sonofaurelius) is awesome. I think these guys might have a lot of potential.

Every Time I Die is a cool metalcore band with a lot of southern rock influence. I used to listen to them a lot a few years back and rediscovered how good they are recently. Their new album is fucking great.

They put on a good live show, but I couldn't get into their studio stuff that much.
Other than that band, I like a lot of deathcore.

I HIGHLY recommend their newest album Controller. It was produced by Devin Townsend (if that persuades you at all).
This band definitely deserves more credit. They use a lot of cool song structures and odd meters. The vocals took me awhile to really appreciate at first; but they also have one of the few screamers that I can understand 95% of what he is saying (which is great, because they have a lot of great lyrics).
See them live if you get the chance. It's intense.
-
I am going to try to organize all my metalcore related recommendations in this one post.
Bleeding Through - Symphonic Metal (new material), Metalcore
Their new album Declaration should be a part of any metal fans collection. It was produced by Devin Townsend, and features some of their greatest material. They dropped a lot of their hardcore roots in favor for a more symphonic metal sound, kind of like a metalcore version of Dimmu Borgir. If you need one song to convince you to get the album, listen to Sister Charlatan, one of the most epic metal songs to date.
Botch - Mathcore, Metalcore
Their album We Are the Romans is known as one of the greatest works in mathcore. It leans more towards the hardcore side of things, but still keeps a great deal of complexity. It keeps the spirit of hardcore and punk with the musical depth of math rock, and the end result is a terrific album.
Converge - Metalcore, Hardcore Punk
One of the lead driving forces of the genre, this band has released one of the most impressive series of albums ever. Jane Doe is widely considered one of the greatest albums in the field of metal. The album is one of the most emotional albums I have heard. Their newest effort Axe to Fall is probably their most accessible. It is probably their most metal album, and contains some progressive influences.
Yakuza (Avant Garde, Metalcore, Punk Jazz)
This band is fucking crazy. They take metalcore and mix it with elements of jazz and world music. They have songs ranging from 2 minute hardcore punk outbursts to 40 minute jazz tunes. They are inspired by acts like King Crimson, John Coltrane, and have shared the stage with familliar bands like Opeth, Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Yeah, those guys are awesome. I need to go back and listen to their stuff again since I know I was obsessed with it a couple summers ago. And like you said, the screamer is very easy to understand which is a big plus.

I still havent listended to Botch, so I guess I should get on top of that.
As for Converge, I have their latest album, and I really like it. It has a really nice flow to it, and it seems "whole", it that makes any sense.

And I added another band to my recommendation post, Yakuza, they are also really hard to get into. Their music is pretty wild and all over the place.

Ive noticed something about breakdowns in metalcore; most of the time, their really "generic" and boring. However, bands like The Faceless, Becoming the Archetype, and even Gorija, use breakdowns occasionally, and their the most intense and head-banging-inducing breakdowns I've heard!
(See: The Faceless- An Autospy, near the end, Becoming the Archetype- Dichotomy, in the middle)
Its like the genre that thrives off of breakdowns can't usually pull them off in a unique fashion, but then these other bands come in and knock their socks off.

This is because most metalcore is generic. Very few bands are pushing the limits of the genre these days.

Threat Signal-This band sounds like a well-oiled machine. At times they remind me of pre-Digimortal Fear Factory(when they were good) with how velcro-like the synchronicity between guitar and drums is except that they can actually shred and write interesting, memorable shit. I like how the singer knows his strengths lie in his bigger-than-the-universe-caliber black metal vox(not really the style but rather the higher-pitched raspy snarl) so he doesn't overdo the clean singing as is the tragedy with the shittier bands in this genre.
When he does sing he isn't spectacular but he doesn't try to make up for it by piling on melodramatic emotion as is the case with some so it never takes away from the song.
The solo at 1:40 melts my face with sheer awesomeness: Counterbalance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7ZIUN7fkcU
Killwhitneydead-They seem like a band that is fully capable of writing excellent music but instead set out to satirize the cliché of the metal=violence&anger thing. As the name implies they write most of their songs in some sort of anti-love style that always seems to culminate in killing/harming someone. A nice touch is that their songs are full of amusing samples from movies

Doom (ep) is their best work IMO. Genesis is pretty good. New album is decent, more of the Doom feel again, so it's kinda awesome.

O yah! I absolutely love the growls of vocalist Jimmy LeBrai. :splodetard:

This thread needs more Unearth. I love the way they bring Thrash Metal influences into Metalcore, and The March is a Metalcore Masterpiece. UNEARTH!
I like KsE's Alive or Just Breathing and I think it's one of the best albums in their career, even if Jesse is not as good vocalist as Howard is.
A Plea for Purging is Mind-Blowing, amazing guitar work.
All That Remains was cool until Overcome. Overcome has incredible songs such as A Song of the Hopeless, Relinquish and Chiron :metal , but most of the songs are mediocre as hell. I'll stick with the Fall of Ideals.
Lost Eden is awesome too. Some great Japanese Metalcore!
All Shall Perish is a good Deathcore band, along with Carnifex ;D
And the Electronic Metalcore sounds shit to me. A lot of shit.
BTW, what album do you suggest me to begin with BTBAM? Heard a lot of recommendations but I don't know where to begin.

I know how goofy this band is, but I absolutely love it. The breakdown at 2:24 is goofy as shit.

His Statue Falls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdyWzEY0sZU)
Vocals sort of suck but I'm a huge sucker for metalcore with synth in it.
-
BTW, what album do you suggest me to begin with BTBAM? Heard a lot of recommendations but I don't know where to begin.
Start with Alaska

You can't go wrong either way, but I figured if he hears All Bodies and doesn't like it, then he can pretty much stop there.

NEED MORE DEATHCORE!!
I've been so addicted to bands like The Black Dahlia Murder, Carnifex, Arsonists Get All the Girls, and All Shall Perish. Anyone got any recommendations for some seriously intense deathcore, with good screaming and production?

Acacia Strain- Continent (Look up the song "Skynet" and love it)
Veil of Maya- The Common Man's Collapse (Look up "Its not Safe to Swim Today")
Winds of Plague- Decimate the Weak (Deathcore with symphonic elements)
Whitechapel- THis is Exile
Salt the Wound- Carnal Repurcussions (Check out "The Conformist")
Start with those and tell me what you think
-
Shit, should have been more specific. The only band I haven't already checked out on that list is Salt the Wound  I listened to, and loved all the rest of them, especially Veil of Maya.

Well I figured you heard some of em already, but figured I might as well list what I knew, lol. But Salt the Wound is pretty good (stay away from their second abum though).
I could recommend more, but they'd just be certain songs from bands instead of whole albums

They are pretty good :tup
Btw, I gotta say that I absolutely LOVE playing "Entombment of a Machine" while im leaving a parking lot or when theres a bunch of people around. The scream always gets them :metal
-
I like the Black Dahlia Murder (saw them mentioned earlier). My only thing about them I don't like is that the lead guitar sound is bland. Apart from that the BDM is :metal

I've actually never listened to them. Maybe I should change that...

Need more Carnifex love, their new album is amazing. Much heavier emphasis on the death metal part of deathcore.

I had a metalcore-phase of my life about 3-4 years ago, bands like:
Killswitch Engage, Trivium, All That Remains, Diecast and a little bit of Darkest Hour.

Every now and then i get bored of the music i listen to, so i move on.
Then maybe some day in the future, i'll go back again. :lol

So in a few years you'll dislike anathema and PT?
-
So in a few years you'll dislike anathema and PT?
It's not really about disliking, it's more that i wanna find new stuff.
If you listen to the same bands all the time, there's not much time to find new stuff.. :P
And i actually took a break from listening to PT, lasted almost 6 months, and when i went back a few weeks ago, the albums sounded better than in a long time. :)

Anyone listen to A Day to Remember?
I havent listened to them, but their touring with August Burns Red and a few other bands next month. Are they worth getting into?
-
Hrm, haven't heard them sorry.
However, I did have the most epic car journey back from work today by blasting As I Lay Dying out of my friend's really nice car speaker system. Then some Bowling For Soup.
-
Anyone listen to A Day to Remember?
They're really good, music is fairly simple, but it's fun. I learned their hardest song on bass in like one hour, tops.
-
Yeah okay this is quite good. It is simple, but it feels far less samey than most metalcore bands :)
-

There's nothing like blasting metal while driving. I retuned the sub in my car today (sounds a shit ton better), so now I feel like going for a drive.
-
The Faceless' first album is some cool technical and proggy deathcore. Anyone heard of The Plasmarifle? I got their album coz I played Halo a lot back in the day so it immediately reminded me of the game. :lol
-
Last night I went and saw Legends, Sleeping Giant, Oceano, Born of Osiris and Bleeding Through :metal
Twas' a wonderful night.
I got some vids of Born of Osiris and Oceano if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/user/OkamiSonataX

Which band has the earliest Grindcore albums? I've been thinking of Napalm Death but there must be some others.
About time to get into Grindcore.
-
Not sure. Grindcore is one of the fews genres I dont really listen too.

Napalm Death is one of the earlist 'real' grindcore bands. Check out Siege if you want to get into the 'influences' of the genre.
-
Just discovered this band And Hell Followed With. Sound like a cross between the Faceless technicality with the common elements of deathcore (imo). Heres my favorite song from them:

We Butter the Bread with Butter is awesome :lol

I still don't understand what core means in this case, what's the difference between metalcore and metal?
-
Oh God...
-
It's better than pretending to know something I don't, get bent
-
Well, metalcore = Metal + hardcore
Deathcore = Death metal + hardcore.
The music just takes elements from both styles of music and uses them.
-
So metalcore is hardcore metal, as oppose to all the sissy metal, does that mean bands like the big four are metalcore or not?
Or is hardcore a genre on it's own and metalcore is a mix between metal and hardcore? in which case all I know about the hardcore genre is whatever Larry Flynt produces.
-

Hardcore, as in hardcore punk music. Im just gonna copy and paste:
"A blend of hardcore and metal music that evolved in the mid-to-late 90's with bands like Unbroken, Earth Crisis, Harvest, Endeavor, Poison The Well and Unearth. There is a liberal use of breakdowns in the music and the lyrical themes range from the political to the personal"
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=metalcore
-
This definition still sounds like normal metal to me, I'll check out the band mentioned as examples to find out more, thanks man.
-
Havent listened to much "core" in a while...any new bands/albums I should be interested in?
-
So I'm listening to After The Burial for the first time since last August. Any of you listened to them?
Once you take all the "seriousness" out of this sort of music it immediately becomes fun and enjoyable, all the grinding parts and breakdowns, cheesiness etc is just all of a sudden fun to hear. Like who cares what people think, it's all there to be listened to with a brutal look on your face.
They're a mix of technical & progressive metal/deathcore, whilst also throwing in melodic sections. I think they're one of those "Meshuggahcore" bands.

Also some really good "core" bands are:
Chelsea Grin- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzyjqOVdAZU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzyjqOVdAZU) Their new album, My Damnation, is their best work by far.
The Contortionist-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nov3l4lgShM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nov3l4lgShM) An amazing progressive deathcore band. I love the middle section of this song, it is breathtaking.

Would like to see this thread bet bumped, been getting into alot of metalcore/post hardcore lately.
Btw I really recommend you guys check out Of mice & men, and Dance gavin Dance,
I don't believe they've been mentioned in here yet.
-
So I'm going through another obsession with After The Burial. Specifically In Dreams (my favorite) and Rareform (The Re-Issue)
One of my favorite Deathcore/Metalcore bands.
Also if anyone here hasn't heard the band Journal. I highly recommend you give their album Unlorja a listen. It is quite possibly one of the most chaotic albums I've ever heard.

Finally found a thread for these guys
I listened to Mothership by Dance Gavin Dance, since they are playing the album in its entirety. They're coming here, along with Polyphia, whom I want to see. Decided I should listen to the headliners album cause why not. It's a fantastic album, after getting adjusted to the singers tone, I enjoy it even more because of his vocals.
Favorite songs off Mothership:
Man of The Year
Deception
The rest interchange.
who else likes these guys and have seen them live?
