Title: ALBUM OF THE MONTH CHALLENGE.
Post by: Glasser on December 17, 2023, 06:06:30 PM
One album for one Month. Can anyone do it? Starting January 1st to the 30th pick one album and listen to nothing else. Greatest hits, live albums, Deluxe Versions, and Anthologies are excluded. Double albums are fine if its one release, (Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence) is acceptable and those alike. You get the picture. February 1 you're free. Obviously this is all on the honor system..I thought about doing this myself to become one with an album like I used to do but I wondered if anyone could do it. Post your album here, you have until New Years Eve to submit. I'm still thinking about mine but I'm excited to do this. I hope a few of you get on board.

Ditto... I'm way too much of a music whore to dedicate a whole month to a single album.  I'm not even sure I could do it for a week!

Are you trying to start your own thing - like no-nut November?  Which I don't even bother with either. :lol

No-can-do's-ville babydoll. I could probably do an Artist of the Month challenge, assuming they had more than 3 or 4 albums, but why would I want to? Do I get a million dollars at the end of the month?

A month is too long. Why choose that long of a timeframe?

5 days or a week or something along those lines would be much more interesting and achievable.

What's the goal of doing this? Get to know an album better for some of many different reasons?

Even if I didn't have other big plans for next month, there's no way I could do this.  As jingle noted, I don't even think I could do it for a week.  Listening at least once a day every day?  I could probably do that, but to the exclusion of everything else?  Nah, I'm out.  After a few days it'd be like eating chocolate ice cream for every meal.  You'd despise it by the end of the month.  I get the appeal of trying to replicate the more limited selection of one's youth, because I'm sure anyone over mid-30s or so can remember a time before digital music was so easily accessible and can relate to spending more time with particular albums than the FOMO temptation of wanting to hear "everything" nowadays, but I think it has to be organic, I don't think you can successfully force it.

Jeez, ok. All of the replies was the reason, its tough. Why? Yes to get to know an album better and I figured January is the slowest month for new releases. I find myself not giving albums a full chance because of so much music. I just thought it would be cool to stick with an album for a month.

I wouldnt do this, but if I did (like I was being paid some reasonable sum of $), I would pick something like The Color Spectrum from The Dear Hunter. and I would just listen to 2-3 of the EP's a week, that way it wouldn't become so repetitive. In other words, if the rules are, you can only listen to any music FROM 1 album, but not necessarily the entire album at once. Per random songs every day/week, I would time/space it out to not have to hear say Mandala and the Indigo EP 31+ times, so I wouldn't wear it out. Maybe 4-7 times tops, and then the next week go on to the next couple of EPs.

Think I'd struggle to do this for one day!

That being said, if you're assigning albums for everyone, and they must comply, can you assign Murder of the Universe by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard to Lizzo :tup

For some reason I initially read the OP as saying you listen to just one album for one day, and then a different one for the next day, etc. But one album for a solid month? Hell no, that'd be like 100 listens for me at the exclusion of all other music. :lol

EDIT: That said, there are more moderate versions that could be fun to do. For example, the album of the month being one to listen to every day.

Well, a desert album situation is where you have no choice.

Response to Glasser's idea was pretty harsh.  Hate to see that.  Having said that, no fucking way in hell would I do this.

ariich's counter-proposal of having to listen to the album once a day for a month is more palatable.  But I still wouldn't do that without, I don't know, some money on the line or something.  I wouldn't get to know the album better, I would grow to hate the album.

When I thought of this, before I posted it I told my wife I may get a few takers or it will go completely off the rails. I love my DTF family and didn't take offense, I love the passion here, believe me I have the same passion. This idea stemmed from a personal issue of jumping from album to album without listening deeply and becoming one with it like I used to years ago because honestly when a new album came out I would sit with it exclusively for a while. When Operation Mindcrime came out I think I played it non-stop for well over a month but back then music was not at our fingertips like today. The experience of music today is just not the same. I listen to tons of music but I miss getting to know every single note and fully absorbing it.  There's too much music coming out so we feel like we're missing out if we spend time on a specific album or band for that matter. So instead of slowing down to smell the roses we are speeding by multiple gardens with our noses out the windows getting only a quick whiff.

I could do a desert island situation for a month , limiting to 10 albums.
But limiting to 1 no...

Or perhaps if my copy of The Pineapple Thief's 8 disc How Did We Find Our Way arrives before the 1st and that would count. Maybe something like that could work.

Dude, I couldn't agree more! It's why I have such an elaborate set of playlists, designed to ensure I revisit albums and give them their due.

I'd be up for picking an album and playing it once a day, for a week, alongside my normal listening!

I made kind of a big change in regards to this. I was buying 50+ albums a year and mostly listening in a passive manner while doing something else. So I decided that I would cut the purchases way down and every inaugural listen would be headphones only...active listening while fully immersed. This has made a HUGE change for me. I find myself thoroughly enjoying almost every new album. So much so that I listen to all my music now in this manner.

I totally get that. I've realized these days that I have trouble actually naming tracks from the discs I listen to. Now it's, 'oh, I think track 5 is the one I really like'. I've lamented that for years, not being able to really get to know an album. I'm ashamed to say I probably have dozens of albums now that I haven't even listened to, yet I keep buying them.

If we get wolf to listen to Issa for a month, this thread will be the best ever.

That's a great way of putting, and I agree 100%.

The thing is, at least for me, I feel like I can't sit down and analyze an album like I used to. Back in college, I used to go into the music practice room, lock myself in there for hours at a time listening to music and analyzing what I heard (trying to play it as well). Other times I would sit at home with the tabs/sheet music on hand and follow along, just to see what was going on. Nowadays most of my listening comes while sitting at work. If I listen to something while driving, it's usually background stuff and I'm not necessarily paying a bunch of attention. And I only play music at home when I need background noise while cleaning lol

+1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 to all of the above posts back to Tom's explanation.

I've bout 27 albums this year, and have 42 saved on Spotify.  I had been trying for the past few years to limit that to 25/25, but failed spectacularly this year.  Compound that by 10 years that Spotify has been in Canada, plus all the non-new releases I've purchased over the years, and I've got probably close to 1000 new albums added to my library in the past 20 years.

Bottom line is, as I (we) age, and continue to be a music whore, the amount of new hours in the day isn't changing, so either I stop exploring new music entirely, or I just grin and bear it.  I'm tending to go with the latter.  I'll never be able to consume and "know" music like I did when I was a teenager or in my early 20s.

I can see some value to this exercise and can appreciate the idea behind it. These days if a new release gets a solid week of (mostly) exclusivity with me it’s doing really well. Though I’m not sure that a month of exclusivity is necessary to really sink into an album. Even back when I had a few dozen CDs I probably didn’t only listen to one album for a month straight. There is the possibility of burn out if you listen to something too much, and I’ve always tried to guard against that with new albums a bit.

Oh absolutely, I totally get it. I do still do that with a few albums a year, the ones that really hook me in for obsessive multiple listens. My top 4 this year were all like that, especially the top 3. But yes I know what you mean, the rest ranges but some albums I like a lot but only end up giving a handful of listens to.

And yeah I think any "harsh" aspects of our responses was intended as gentle ribbing among friends (certainly in my case and I'm sure for others too).

This has been an ongoing issue for a long time.  You start young with a small collection that you know quite well, but at some point you've amassed so much music that you realize you are just never going to know even a fraction of it as well as you did some of the earliest music you discovered.  And there's both a neverending supply of new music coming like a firehose, as well as the vast library of music that's already been released that you gradually discover.

I feel like the roulettes have been the biggest help in this regard for me in years.  Both in hosting one and participating in them, it forces me to more closely listen to music than I often otherwise would in deciding what to send, and this often leads to deepening my appreciation for these artists.  Sometimes I send long-established favorites that I already know quite well, other times I send ones I like but don't know as intimately, but the process familiarizes me with them much more and often leads to digging deeper into their catalog than I had previously.

I also find doing various playlists, including the current one for the year, is more effective sometimes even than albums, since it's much more manageable time-wise to make progress than listening through entire albums.  And it often results in listening to the whole albums later on anyway.

And yeah I think any "harsh" aspects of our responses was intended as gentle ribbing among friends (certainly in my case and I'm sure for others too).

Glasser…gently ribbed for our pleasure.

Very true Kade. And on top of that back then there were only a handful of releases coming out at a clip. The internet on many levels ruined music while st the dame time opened up the possibility of access to more great stuff. So this gets chalked up to the new world we live in. On a side note what Issa album am I buying you for Christmas?

Boy does this hit home. Although I've bought 187 new albums this year. I've only thoroughly listened to about half of them. And there are a number I haven't even gotten to yet.

When I thought of this, before I posted it I told my wife I may get a few takers or it will go completely off the rails. You don't really need to do it mate.  I'd even if you wanted, just listen to all of the albums we list for you, maybe 1 or 2 each. You can rank them or something at the end of the month.  Why do it to yourself just one album dude.

I think based on what you all have been discussing, Tom, I think the challenge would be more acceptable again if you said that for January you are ONLY going to listen to albums in your CD collection??  I could easily do that because like others, I have at least half my collection I've never really listened to.

Or pick say an album a day out of your collection and listen to it a couple of times each day.  I dunno man, props for the thread but I think one album a month is kind of pointless......UNLESS.....you stumbled across something like OM where you are obsessed with it and don't want to listen to anything else.  The last real album I felt that way was Woe from An Abstract Illusion.  That was on repeat for a long time, but it was still broken up at times with other albums.

True minor?  :lol
One of the many truly awful things about that album. :lol A month of this would be some sort of experiment in torture.

Tom, if you do this with a more sensible option then I'd happily join my moderated version and listen to it once a day (assuming I don't know it well already).

Possibly the most hilariously bad thing I've ever heard. And this is coming from someone who loves genre shifting in cover songs.

The arrangements are laughable. The song choices are horrific. The vocals are so much worse than they should have been (the 2 classical tenors have great voices, but sound ridiculous over these rock arrangements, and in comparison Labrie sounds thin and weak, one of the worst performances I've heard from him). Everything about this album is bad. I was considering giving it 1 star because it can be good for a laugh, but sadly I get the impression that this album was made seriously, which makes it that little bit worse.

If you want an example, the start of Singing in the Rain never fails to crack me up.

Even I couldn't do this, and I feel like I listen to less new music than most.  I appreciate the idea behind it, and I feel like I devote a lot of time to my favorite albums each year, sometimes to the exclusion of others I'd probably like.  But I still wouldn't want to listen to absolutely nothing else. In your Mindcrime example, didn't you at least also listen to the radio during that time?  When a new Katatonia or Leprous etc album comes out, I usually play it to death.  But I also play other albums by the band in question, and random other things I'm familiar with and in the mood for.

Honestly, I only listened to O:M exclusively. If I was in someone else's car and the radio was on it was background under a conversation. I did the same for King Diamond "Abigail". Most of the time back then I listened to a few albums at a clip then moved on to another small batch. It wasn't until the internet that I would play a bunch of albums a day.

I've realised there is only one answer here. It's King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's Live at Red Rocks '22 album...

https://kinggizzard.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-red-rocks-22
 (https://kinggizzard.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-red-rocks-22)

It's 9 hours long, with 86 songs, covering their three 'Thee Hour Marathon, No Repeats Shows' from last year.

Not a single repeated song and a comprehensive guide to all things Gizz. I wonder how many times you could get all the way through it in a month?

Lucky for Tom, that Gizzard album doesn't meet the criteria.

Everything about this album is bad. I was considering giving it 1 star because it can be good for a laugh, but sadly I get the impression that this album was made seriously, which makes it that little bit worse.

If you want an example, the start of Singing in the Rain never fails to crack me up.

I was considering giving it 1 star because it can be good for a laugh, but sadly I get the impression that this album was made seriously, which makes it that little bit worse.

If you want an example, the start of Singing in the Rain never fails to crack me up.

I remember hearing this at the time of release and having to turn it off... quickly. I found it unpleasant.

Wonder what crystalstars would make of it?

That's correct. No live albums.
Lucky for Tom, that Gizzard album doesn't meet the criteria.

Tom, I can't do this challenge, but I AM going to challenge myself to listen to a particular album everyday this week, alongside my usual listening. That's the best I can do.

The album of choice is Korn's self titled debut. I was watching a Devin Townsend vocal reaction video the other day, which led me to a vocal reaction to Freak on a Leash. It's been YEARS since I listened to that song and I admit I played it another 3 or 4 times in the next 24 hours. I was never hugely into Korn, although I've tried many times over the years.

I have already spun a few albums of theirs over the last few days, so here we are. I listened to the debut yesterday and thought "this will be the album I'm gonna go with". I loved it yesterday and I feel a week with it will give me a much better appreciation. Today was day 2, so yea, the thread has influenced my listening somewhat.

Korn's debut just cracked my top 50.  What an incredible, angry, hostile, moody and intense album.  So new and unique for the time and at times, a disturbing album.  Groovy as fuck too.

Yea dude, it's really fucking good. The Deftones finally clicked with me a few years ago, after 20 years of casual listening. I feel I'm about to have the same happen with Korn.

Tom, I will.post two albums, I'll do it sometime later today.

Yea I was the same with Deftones but something clicked a few years ago. Must be something about nu-metal bands.

I'm pretty familiar with Korn's first 6 albums, and had them in various mp3 players over the years. They never really clicked previously but really vibing with the self titled and Follow the Leader at the moment. Gonna slowly work my way through their catalogue, see how much I'm enjoying it.

Jokes aside, I fully understand the impulse and sentiment for this thread/challenge. I'm still a prisoner of my "buy a record and stay with it until you have money for the next one" youth, and I'm generally a slow burn eviscerator of music rather than a browser. Actually, their release last year was pretty good.  Probably because Breed wasn't on it.  Those middle three albums most certainly did blow chunks.

Expedition Delta (I almost abbreviated that to ED, but thought better of it), is decent, but inconsistent.  There's a couple of gems in their S/T, but mostly it's mediocre.  I never new they released a follow up in 2016 ... and it's not on Spotify, so I've never heard it.

Hope all is well Tom.

Just wanted to say this thread inspired me. I mentioned earlier that I couldn't listen to one album, exclusively, for any period of time really. I did decide to listen to one album, every day for a week, alongside my normal listening. That album, as I also mentioned earlier, was Korn's self titled debut.

I decided to do it in a bid to familiarise myself with the record more, and as the thread talks about, listen like I did when first getting into music.

It was fun to do, the record I picked was one I wanted to spin every day, and it gave me a better appreciation of it. As well as listening every day, I also read up on the recording of the album, it's importance and legacy, as well as history on the band. It was a cool thing to do and the sort of thing I like to try, to challenge my listening habits.

Some of these songs have really grown on me and I have clear favourites I'll be adding to my playlist of all time favourite songs. I haven't decided what album I'm going to do this again with, but I know I will be, so cheers dude.
