Title: Favorite Christmas music
Post by: splent on December 01, 2023, 08:09:34 PM
I know not everyone loves it but here are a few of mine:

Top 3 for me:
1. Run with the fox - chris squire and Alan white
2. Christmas Wrapping - the waitresses
3. Star of Wonder - Tori Amos

Favorite
Classic: Christmas is coming - Vince Guaraldi
Prog/Jazz: 12 days of Christmas - Bela Fleck
Metal: god rest ye merry gentlemen - Dio
Guilty Pleasure: Sleigh Ride - Carpenters
Fave album: 3 Ships - Jon Anderson

So many more, but I love Christmas music, just not most of the vastly overplayed ones they play on lite fm radio all day and night)

Paul Buchanan - Silent Night
Paul Buchanan - Seasons of Light
Big Big Train - British Racing Green
Big Big Train - Merry Christmas
Big Big Train - Snowfalls
Big Big Train - Expecting Snow

O Holy Night - Ted Neeley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sheugc7IWmg)
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - The Peanuts gang (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiHT-ajaI0U)
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - The residents of Bedford Falls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfBAm-TnPks)

There are traditional songs I like more than others, but I don't generally have a favorite version of each. My favorite traditional song in general is probably Silent Night.

I used to be big into Christmas music. Have the Merry Axemas discs and all the Gary Hoey stuff plus a lot of the classics. As I get older and more jaded and less fond of the holiday, I turn to one of the most insane ones in my collection:

Beardfish - ...And Terry Takes The Christmas Route

https://youtu.be/_nnZ-k2UY2o?si=8UlPfZmszijAtoZ4

Rikard in all his whacked out glory on this one.

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones - Jingle All The Way

One of my favorite Christmas albums of all time, by one of my favorite bands, featuring some great renditions of classic songs, but with a Flecktones twist, including the highlight of the album, "The 12 Days Of Christmas". It features each day-verse in ascending chromatic keys, each featuring a time signature based on the day (3rd day is a waltz in 3, 7th day is in 7/8, 11th day is in 11/16, etc.).

Definitely check this out if you want jazzy/blues/folk-inspired renditions of classic X-mas tunes, with a banjo!

-Marc.

I've purchased both the Alpha Rev and Bela Fleck albums listed above. Thank you, folks!

Awesome!  :tup I hope you like Jingle All The Way as much as I do! Please post your thoughts on it as soon as you get around to listening to it!

A couple more recommendations I want to make are the December People albums, headed up by Robert Berry. The first album re-imagines Christmas tunes in the style of classic rock and prog, while the second album is mostly focused on classic rock. They've since released two more albums that are a mix of tracks from their first two albums and a few new tunes, still all based on other artists' songs, which can have some neat effects. If you're a fan of a lot of the bands they pay homage to, you'll enjoy their takes on them with Christmas lyrics.

And of course, I'd be a poor Neal Morse fan if I didn't mention the Prog World Orchestra's A Proggy Christmas, featuring members of Transatlantic, Steve Hackett, and many more guests as they tackle some interesting arrangements of classic Christmas songs done by Neal Morse. There are several stand outs, but as a whole, the album is quite enjoyable and different from the usual standard rock-versions of these songs.

-Marc.

IQ released a very limited amount of a christmas CD last year. Sold out in a day or so.

Even includes an epic

https://youtu.be/rOLxCUucgXI

I discovered this album not long after it came out, and every holiday season since then, I make time to spin it at least a dozen or so times in its entirety. It's a really good album, and the opening and closing tracks in particularly are just classic IQ.

-Marc.

My posts from previous Christmas music threads over the last 13 years here. As an update to IQ, I did finally get an original copy of the stand-alone Christmas album by them, even though they included it in their big artbook set. They apparently found a few at their HQ and put them up for sale earlier this year and sold out in minutes but I managed to snag one!

I have my main staples and traditions for Xmas music.

Any other time of the year, I like to continously experiment and change playlists, compilations, artists etc but I find comfort in December doing always the same things, musically speaking.

My main Christmas bands are:

- TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA (of course)
- THE WIZARDS OF WINTER (A TSO-like band, it was formed by ex members after all)
- RASKASTA JOULUA (all stars finnish metal ensemble, they do original songs and reworked classics)

The following artists have also enough Christmas songs / albums to justify an all winter / Xmas compilation:

- LOREENA MCKENNITT
- BLACKMORE's NIGHT

Other random albums / stuff I listen to:

- SYMPHONY NORTH (project with a lot of guests including our own James LaBrie)
- An unholy and insane mashup of Lovecraft lore and seasonal songs, look on YouTube "A Scary Solstice" and "An Even Scarier Solstice"
- There was a metal compilation with various artists, find the best song, a Dio / Iommi ultra heavy rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Other random stuff:
- Dropkick Murphys have an absolutely hilarious video about this time, The Season's Upon Us.
- Goo Goo Dolls made a wonderful song, This is Christmas.
- Patty Gurdy, YouTube underground star, has a magnificent folky and lovely tune, The Yule Fiddler
- Rob Halford has Winter Songs and Celestial in his catalogue, two Xmas albums
- Tarja Turunen did some dark and spooky covers of Xmas classics, the second album like that is out now

Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker is the sound of Christmas for me since I was a little girl. To this day hearing those familiar themes stirs the holiday spirit.

I can give you my perspective as someone who wasn't born in the US but has now lived in the US for 20 years  :)

Growing up in Italy I'd say you would hear Christmas music in stores during the month of December, but not much more than that. Maybe things have changed in the last few years, I'm not sure. In the US, well, it's a different story  ;) It's basically everywhere, with multiple radio stations switching to 100% Christmas music after Thanksgiving (or sometimes even a little earlier than that). I'm typically ok with it for the first couple of days  My wife, on the other hand, is a huge fan of anything Christmas related so, needless to say, there's plenty of it going around.

My statement about the Vince Guaraldi's album  - that's one I actually enjoy. It's a lovely record.

As for the rest - jokes aside - there's some real nice Christmas-themed music, a lot of it mentioned in this thread. I enjoy the whole mood, for sure. It's just that I overall tend to get a little overwhelmed after a few weeks of it

I imagine A Charlie Brown Christmas is more popular here than in the UK. Growing up here it used to be an annual special on prime time TV (might still be), so I think there's just a lot of nostalgia related to it.

Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas

Yeah, I mean, this is one of my favorite songs PERIOD, let alone "Christmas".

I'm a traditionalist; the only "rock" songs I really like for the holidays are Greg Lake's "I Believe In Father Christmas", and The Kinks "Father Christmas".  I like the TSO ("Christmas In Sarajevo" is stellar).   I like U2's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)". Sorry, not sorry, Mariah Carey "All I Want For Christmas (Is You)" is excellent, as is "Last Christmas" by Wham!

Other than that, it's classics.  I love the Elvis Christmas album.  Burl Ives is the fucking MAN!   Frank Sinatra is key around the holidays.  I like Dean Martin's "Baby It's Cold Outside (the woke response be damned!).  "Snoopy and the Red Baron" is a perennial favorite.

It's likely an American thing because it's so indelibly tied to the Peanuts Christmas special.  But I think the sad thing is, Vince Guaraldi is a pretty well-respected composer generally, and he has a ton of good music that is right in the vein of "Linus and Lucy" and is non-holiday. "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" was both a hit and a Grammy winner, as well as being what brought Guaraldi to the Peanuts' teams attention.

I love traditional Christmas music, as well as the more popular secular Christmas songs made popular in the 30s - 60s.

I don't like any of the stuff by Greg Lake or Jon Anderson, though.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra is cool, and they put on a great show.

Been listening to a good bit of Christmas jazz lately.

Bela Fleck's Christmas album is awesome, and his version of 12 Days of Christmas is just ridiculous.  If you know, you know.

Favorite Christmas song is O Holy Night.

Cantique de Noel, aka O Holy Night, is the golden standard, Blue Christmas sung by Elvis is quite moving, and a choir I incredibly enjoy is Betlehem, from the Musical Martin Guerre by Boubil & Schoenberg (Same authors of LesMiz), but when it comes to Christmas after-dinner partying, nothing works better than this (https://open.spotify.com/intl-it/track/7taXf5odg9xCAZERYfyOkS?si=34b435f4a08b44e2).

I know not everyone loves it but here are a few of mine:

Top 3 for me:
1. Run with the fox - chris squire and Alan white
2. Christmas Wrapping - the waitresses

I dig both of these (I really ought to hate that Waitresses song, but I don't).

Traditional: I like O Holy Night, Coventry Carol, Carol of the Bells and God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (really, any of the traditional songs, when done well, are pretty incredible).

Secular: Sleigh Ride is my favorite, and just about any of the Vince Guaraldi Peanuts material is great.

More recent: Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson did a version of We Three Kings in 5/8 time called We Five Kings that's really cool.  Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song) and Grown Up Christmas List by Amy Grant are really good (particularly the former).

On the other end of the spectrum, Elvis's Blue Christmas, McCartney/Wings' Wonderful Christmas, and Springsteen's Santa Claus is Coming to Town should all be permanently erased from existence.

Agreed on McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime.  I freakin hate that song!

One of my favorites is the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah.  It's just so epic!  I also really like We Three Kings, Away In a Manger, and What Child is This.

Yeah...that's where a chorus "should" be.  When I originally checked the meter, I thought it was a 5/4 measure, but a single 3/4 measure makes more sense, and everything else is 4/4, although it's not really clear during that sax section whether the snare is hitting on the 2 or the 4.

I think the only reason the sax part doesn't annoy me is because it's a tenor sax instead of an alto.

I'm surprised no one included Octavarium in here.  I embarrassingly didn't notice the Jingle Bells snippet in the song for several years.

I love Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas.  Actually, I love just about everything related to Peanuts/Snoopy, including the music.

Aside from those, Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses and any of the "classic" Christmas songs are favorites.

If you're looking for a sad Christmas-related song, Joni Mitchell's "River" is awesome.  Reminds me of being single on Christmas.

But, even if it was common knowledge, a snippet in a 24 minutes epic does not authomatically turns it into a "christmas song", at least for me  :D

Right?  It's like a movie set during the holidays isn't automatically a "Christmas movie".  ;) :)

Never noticed it either!

No, it doesn't.

Who knows the songs "Backdoor Santa" by Clarence Carter, and "Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)" by The Darkness?

These are my two go to picks! I'm not sure how big the Darkness song is outside of the UK, but I would say it was the last truly great Christmas hit.

Apparently I'm still embarrassed, because I still haven't noticed it.  Time stamp/section?

The video of JR in the Santa outfit kinda gives it away, eh?  https://youtu.be/2gf8_kVS1OE?si=oZhu776tRQslpDOV&t=1225

Just had this song come on our Christmas playlist...

S Club 7 - Never Had a Dream Come True

It's not a Christmas song as such, but it waa a Christmas No. 1 here in the UK, in the early 00s. I don't give two fucks, I best this out every single year. It is a beaut of a song.

Anyone outside of the UK have any clue what I'm talking about?
