It's that time of the year again. Most announced titles coming out are for 2024 now. Of course some of the titles in the 2nd post could (or already did) come out in 2023, but I'll edit those if/when that information is passed along or known.
I will link this topic to the 2023 Release Date Calendar (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=57920.msg2937991#msg2937991).

16: Frost* - Life In The Wires
Did this get confirmed somewhere? Last I saw it didn't have an official release date yet.
no it doesn's appear to have a release date yet.
Corrected.
When I was copying the stuff from the 2023 thread, I must have left the release date with the Hackett album on the line, etc.
-
16: Steve Hackett - The Circus And The Nightwhale
The Steve Hackett cycle:
- Announces new album
- New album released
- "Hi everyone! I know you're all excited about *new album* but I'm just here to announce my new tour plans where I play *old Genesis album* in it's entirety and all your old Genesis favorites! See you out there!
- "I had such a great time out playing *Old Genesis album* I'm now going to release "Steve Hackett LIVE! The *Old Genesis Album* TOUR! Filmed in 47K and 27 camera angles. Get it on CD and Blue-Ray!
- Next year: "So, I'm working on a new album..."
*repeat ad-nauseam
Though, I did see this latest new on is his first concept album in like 3 decades or something, so maybe we will see a two-set live tour of this full album and a full performance of Wind and Wuthering....

Looking forward to Savatage.
Also curious about Daniel Cavanagh and what type of music this will be.
-
For the "Likely" list - Apparently Beardfish have reformed and will do some shows next year, and I've read from a fan in the Big Big Train FB forum that talked to Rikard after a BBT show earlier this year that Beardfish have a new album in the works, so a 2024 release is likely for the band. It'll be their first new album in nine years.
-Marc.
-
Following and shit. Now that we're coming up to December, it's probably time to swap this with the 2023 thread as the one that is pinned.

Okay, I appreciate your efforts to be all-encompassing here, but can you dial it back a little bit please? What purpose does this list serve if it's cluttered with dozens upon dozens of bands nobody's even heard of? I won't pretend that there aren't albums I put on here that only I am anticipating or excited for, but at least I don't completely flood the list with them.
-
I was kinda thinking the same. I appreciate Ministro has insights to lots of upcoming music, but getting a list of a few dozen/hundred a month is going to be overkill. In the last 2 dumps of his, there are 2 bands that caught my eye of interest, and if there's any more posts like that, I suspect that I (and others) will find the list to overwhelming and burdensome to be useful.

Agreed. I think if a band has never had a discussion thread anywhere on this forum, chances are there aren't any fans of them on this forum. Using the search function for them might be helpful in deciding if a band is worth mentioning in this album release thread, that is, if there aren't ANY results by other forum members (presumably talking about said artists), then I doubt anyone here is going to be checking this thread for them.
Personally speaking I like looking at the OP to see if any bands I like/know have had their release dates updated or just to remind myself when something is coming out. It's just good to have that info pinned at the top rather than searching for said artist's dedicated thread on this forum to find that specific discussion.
-Marc.

My intention in sharing upcoming album releases on the calendar thread is to contribute to the music discovery experience. I've discovered and grown to appreciate numerous bands through the "What are you listening to" thread, many of which were unfamiliar to me before. If my contributions are perceived as less valuable due to unfamiliarity with the bands I post and the lenght of my post, I may reconsider participating in this thread.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. :\

I guess for the "I believe it when I hold it in my hands" category, but All That Remains is expected to release new stuff this year (or so it seems based on some comments).

I don't think that they're any less valuable, but it's overwhelming. Too much of a good thing is still too much. Look at what you dropped for January - you've listed what .... 150 albums or so? How many of those bands have *you* even heard of? And are you going to explore each and every one of those?
I won't speak for anyone else, but my us of the list/thread is to periodically check to see if there's any pending releases I wasn't aware of. But in a list of albums that large, (again, speaking for myself) I'm likely to skip it because it's simply too much 'noise' to sift thru.
Respectfully, it's tantamount to joining a conversation amongst a bunch of people, and shouting over top of everyone. Just tone it down a little, and join the conversation - don't dominate it or take it over.
-
Yeah...I used to be on the receiving end of promos, and half of the stuff I used to receive was borderline unlistenable and barely made it past the first track before being deleted without a review.

It's OK, I requested yesterday my contribution to be deleted.
In response to your question, I make it a point to give a listen to all the promo albums that come my way. Admittedly, not every one of them resonates with my taste, and just like lonestar, many find their way to the digital trash bin on my computer.
However, my approach has led me to stumble upon some real musical gems, according to my humble opinion. Artists like Borknagar, LEAH, Engulf, Yellowcard, and Fit for a King, to name a few from my recent discoveries, might have slipped through the cracks had I not taken the time to explore beyond my comfort zone. It's through this process that I've uncovered music that brings me immense joy and satisfaction.
Naturally, I don't expect anyone to adopt my approach, so I'll be signing off from this thread.
Now, moving on...

Dude, this was why the FRIDAY RELEASES thread was created. For those of us who devour a shit ton of new releases, but don't want to clog up this thread, we post the new releases we're interested on each Friday release day.
Come post those albums on their release date, in that thread. You'll reach the crowd who are looking to explore something new each Friday, without spamming this one.
Edit: I just realised you were the one who created that thread :lol

12: Béla Fleck - Rhapsody In Blue
https://www.belafleck.com/about
Pre-orders will ship to arrive on February 12, 2024. Pre-order products are excluded from sales/promotions.
Béla Fleck Rhapsody in Blue CD in gold foil wallet with poster insert.
The latest project from banjo great Béla Fleck expands and explores George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by paying homage to the legendary composer while redefining an American classic—just in time for its centennial. Available February 12, a hundred years to the day Gershwin premiered the work at Aeolian Hall in New York City, Fleck’s Rhapsody in Blue album includes three variations: “Rhapsody in Blue(grass),” “Rhapsody in Blue(s),” and the classic orchestration, but with banjo featured instead of piano, performed by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Eric Jacobson. The set also features Gershwin’s “Rialto Ripples” and “Unidentified Piece for Banjo,” an unrecorded and unreleased gem discovered at the Library of Congress.
Track Listing
Rhapsody in Blue(grass)
Unidentified Piece for Banjo
Rhapsody in Blue (featuring Eric Jacobson & the Virginia Symphony Orchestra)
Rhapsody in Blue(s) (feat. Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Victor Wooten)

The second A-Z record is nearing completion and one of the final pieces needed is YOUR VOICE. That's right, we want YOU, the fans, to literally be a part of this release! We're looking for you to record part of a group style chant and send it to the band for mixing into one of their new tracks!
First step, listen to the sample HERE: https://soundcloud.com/mark-zonder/a-z-chant-1
Once you've checked it out - grab a mic and record yourself singing the same line!
Just click on the “more” icon to download the file and email the file to azchant1@gmail.com no later than February 5, 2024. That's it! We'll handle the rest from there.

I'm going to defend Ministrio here - I like looking at the release date OP and seeing what I might have missed if I hear about a band after the fact. People post stuff like Sheryl Crow on this thread and the only reason she should be on a prog forum is to show that Kevin Gilbert was the best thing to happen to her musically. The Friday release thread was meant for discussion and it is a useful thread as well, but having a place to look up just album releases without having to skim through posts is just as helpful, to the point I even asked the people in that thread to post some of them in this thread. I see the point of it being "overkill", and maybe keeping it limited to signed bands would be a good thing if he hasn't already.

Amanda Palmer - not my style
Magnum - Fun energy but also doesn't strike my fancy.
Neal Morse - I plan to give the whole album a listen soon, Cosmic Mess is cool.
Green Day - Seeing "we're pedophiles" in the lyrics is weird, don't care about the context
MesaVerde - This was pretty cool prog rock, nice mood.
Caligula's Horse - Not clicking like I thought it would, overall. It's amazing that it's 60 minutes long and feels closer to 80.
The Pneumatic Transit - Not on Spotify but I tried (don't care to sample on youtube or elsewhere)
The Smile - Listened to "Bending Hectic" and liked it.

(https://www.loudersound.com/news/its-just-two-twenty-minute-songs-very-conceptual-steven-wilson-updates-on-his-unreleased-new-studio-album) The irony is that he almost finished it already at this point. Damn, yeah, that's a good single. Actually really looking forward to this one. Alcest has had an interesting trajectory for me where I initially got into them in like 2012 or 2013, enjoyed them a lot, then kinda burnt out on them around Kodama because their sound got pretty stale to me. Kodama isn't a bad record but it did feel pretty uninspired to me, like they took a lot of flak for doing something different on Shelter (which I think is super underrated) and course-corrected too hard into writing their most predictable, by-the-numbers album to date. I didn't really care for Spiritual Instinct when it came out, either. Then a year or so later, I gave it another chance and starting enjoying it a lot more, and now I think that might be their best album. Alcest is always gonna sound like Alcest, but I feel like their music is starting to sound a lot more passionate and inspired again.
-
I really quite liked Kodama (I'm pretty sure that album was by introduction to the band), and it was Spiritual Instinct that I found uninspired. I dug into their back catalogue before that album came out though, and my favourites are easily Écailles de lune and Les Voyages De L'âme. Those albums are peak Alcest.
But yea, looking forward to it.

Is there a thread for discussing what you like in 2024?
I wanted to see what are some favorite songs from this year so far and check them out.

We're three months in, that's long enough for someone to make a "favorite albums of 2024" thread I guess. :lol

See my comment in the thread Jamesman42 started! I got called out for starting one too early last year :lol
I definitely have enough to show my current ranking.

There’s an Enchant release possible this year? (Was just looking at the first page).

It's been forthcoming since 2018...

The band are also currently hard at work on a new studio album, of which the band comments: “We are currently working on material for what will be our 9th studio album! Things are coming along quite well and we are nailing down the songs for the new record out of a plethora of material. I won’t give too much away but I will say that I think Enchant fans are in for a treat! We hope to have it out later this year or early next year! Stay tuned!”
I would sooner expect LTE4, or the next Tool album, at this rate.

Oh, yeah that’s ancient history now.

Which makes me wonder, what exactly is Ted Leonard actively involved in now?
Transatlantic - retired
Spock's Beard - mostly retired
Enchant - ??
Thought Chamber - nada
Affector - was this just a one-off?
PSA - is this the only thing he's in that's got a hearbeat?

I think that's where they actually make some money, I've seen some of the events they play at via Ted's socials and it seems they command a decent fee.

So wait, let me get this straight. Ted Leonard and Dave Meros play weddings and private parties nowadays?

"Nowadays"? Looking at the band's bio page, Ted formed Rolling Heads in 2009, so if 15 years is "nowadays", then yeah, they've been doing private functions lately.

I’m not sure if they still do since Ted is in NY now and Dave is in CA. They had done it for a long time though. Ted may have continued it in NY without Dave (his wife is in it as well).
