Maynard James Keenan is doing a run in the Southwest regions of the states where he's playing with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle in one show and they are bringing Primus along for the ride. All while he's turning 60 in April.

I'm surprised they are going to do Hollywood Bowl for the LA show, but maybe I'm underestimating how big those bands are.
I got no shows planned for 2024 for now, but I'm hoping Myles Kennedy will do some solo shows in SoCal and I guess I'm willing to see Creed if they do a Summer tour in outdoor amphitheaters.

I'll make a point to catch it somewhere, but no idea where that will be. The Greek Theater in SF seems interesting.

Picked up tickets for Extreme/Living Colour for February. That'll be three times on this tour for my wife and I. My hope is, they'll include the new songs "The Mask" and "Thicker Than Blood" on this second U.S. leg, since both videos will be out by then (The Mask is out now). I can't emphasize this tour enough. A true old-school, the way it should be, headliner set of 2 hours. And Living Colour gets 45 minutes. So thankful that Extreme does things RIGHT.

Ok, I may have found something I can go to and start the year off. Alter Bridge's Mark Tremonti is doing a few shows in January under Tremonti Sings Sinatra where he is singing, not playing guitar at all, Sinatra Covers for charity, NDSS specifically. He's playing at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.
I got to admit this is going to be weird in all fronts for me attending this show. A. I don't drive to Beverly Hills and don't really care much for that part of LA. Although, it's only four miles west of the Wiltern Theater on the same street, so that should be fine. B. I got to dress a little more nicely for this show than I would other concerts. Can't be showing up in the same Alter Bridge shirt for this one. C. Seeing Mark Tremonti and not see him play guitar is going to weird as well, but I know he's more than a competent enough vocalist to do this and he's done a few of these kinds of shows before so I'm sure it's going to be fine.

Well, so far, plans for 2024.
Tremonti Sings Sinatra - Saban Theater - Beverly Hills, CA. January 13th, 2024.
Maybe I'll see Creed in the Summer of '99 and Beyond festival where it's them, 3 Doors Down, Daughtry, Finger Eleven, Vertical Horizon, and the skeleton of whatever is left of Fuel. It's in the massively large amphitheater, Glen Helen Amphitheater, in San Bernardino. It is a venue that I have yet to go to a concert for, but it's so far away to drive. I shudder to think what the parking would look like there if this venue holds at least 30k people and up to 60k people.
I just need Myles Kennedy to announce a solo show somewhere in the Pacific West Coast and maybe, just maybe, I can cope with Alter Bridge not doing shows in 2024.
On another note, Primus/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer is extending their tour to cover some parts of the Northeast if people are intrigued about it.

You're in for a treat, The Ocean is insane live. I saw them open for Leprous and went from having never heard of them to being a big fan in the span of 40 minutes. I was excited to see that they're touring next year, but their FL date is while I'll be at sea for CttE.

The 2023 version of the festival just happened recently, I wasn't there, but all those bands played so I don't see why they can't pull it off next year. Most pop punk albums are under 40 minutes so I'd bet they can play the full albums in their set times. It's actually a really cool concept to do, I wonder if the average fans will like it or not though. I feel like festivals might not be the best place for unique sets as the bands are usually reaching audiences outside their fan base so they are more inclined to play hits or their new music. But then again, when a festival has every band in the genre performing each year, I guess you have to start getting creative to make the next year's festival interesting to keep the same people coming back.

Funny enough, just saw AJR do a pop up concert at Irving Plaza (1k club like GA venue) on Sunday and they announced they are playing arenas next summer, including Madison Square Garden. Well, me over here thought, cool we'll go but that won't sell out... well it did, during presale and now they added a second show, the same day as Sammy in NJ :lol Oh well, I'm likely choosing Sammy over that because I just saw AJR and Sammy's getting old
Alestorm just announced a US tour, but they aren't coming any closer than Toad's Place in CT which is damn tempting to see since I've never been there. It's a Sunday in March though, not sure I'll pull that off.

I read on Loudwire's tour announcement for the week that Starset is going to playing at the Anaheim House of Blues in April. That's some good moving on up for them. They were main-supporting Halestorm in that same venue in 2017 and so far, been playing smaller venues like The Regent Theater in LA and The Observatory in Santa Ana in recent times. So for them to get their shot at playing The House of Blues in Anaheim is great to see and I hope I can be there.
Edit: And it's billed as An Evening With..... I hope it holds true and they can give a long set without any openers. That's more enticing for me.

Yellowcard did just come through on an Ocean Avenue anniversary show on their own, they didn't play the entire album front to back though. However, it was heavy Ocean Avenue and a couple other of their big, radio hits. Worked for me! I may have cried a little, that album is linked to some crazy times.
I think these are the top albums I can't wait to hear. For my GenX-er friends who have no idea who these bands are (RJ lol) these are basically the summers of our high school years.

Avenged Sevenfold has announced a new leg of their tour in the Spring. I'm thinking about doing a weekend trip to one of these cities. Cleveland or Newark. I don't have any trips planned and it would be nice to fill that kind of space for a brief vacation at that point.

Got tickets to see Set It Off for next year, learned my lesson as it sold out last year and I had to pay extra to get in.

Got tickets for the Rolling Stone show in Denver, one of the easiest stadium purchases I've ever encountered! Only had a handful of people in front of me in the queue and was able to select great seats immediately. Not cheap, but no surprise there...Still more affordable than the LA show at Sofi..
Will be my 7th Stones show and my dad's 12th!

I'm looking at the openers for that Limp Bizkit tour. Corey Feldman is an opener? I watched Justin Hawkins a few weeks back looking at a few clips of Corey Feldman in concert and it's.... something. I don't know if he's going to make it to the whole tour if this is what we are going to see.

SoCal show is in San Bernardino..... though. I'm already thinking of making the one long drive to San Bernardino to see Creed. I don't think I can do another one for Limp Bizkit. If they were in Irvine though...., that would have been a better shot for me to go.

The openers are unfamiliar to me, and there's a lot. Show is local to me, so it's an easy one to check out.
I'm currently not planning on buying the lawn pass for my local amphitheater (if they even do it this year, I haven't seen it advertised) even though so far this summer's line up is looking better than last summer. I just think, I can probably score the $20/25 lawn tickets for the summer sale for shows that I'm cool with being on the lawn and then pony up a bit for the shows I want to be closer to. The lawn experience is only fun when I'm with people, but I go to a lot of shows alone, I'd rather get myself a good seat for those shows. They also hardly had any upgrade sales last summer to get a seat from the lawn, which used to be more common.

So I got an email a few days back stating that the Tremonti Sings Sinatra show in Beverly Hills is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances out of control.... This sucks. A. The show is cancelled so that's a bummer not being able to see Mark Tremonti just sing in a fancy setting, and not play guitar. B. I still need a show to go to in January keep the concert a month, going back to August 2021, alive and I'm not seeing good options out there.
I mean like there's Metal Allegiance playing at the House of Blues and..... Trapt...... playing at the smaller room at the House of Blues. Nothing that screams, "I'm pumped to want to be here." John 5 is playing in Santa Ana in late January. That could be a maybe. How's Bryan Adams shows nowadays? He's playing in Anaheim at some point in late January.

I still need a show to go to in January keep the concert a month, going back to August 2021, alive and I'm not seeing good options out there.
I mean like there's Metal Allegiance playing at the House of Blues and..... Trapt...... playing at the smaller room at the House of Blues. Nothing that screams, "I'm pumped to want to be here." John 5 is playing in Santa Ana in late January. That could be a maybe. How's Bryan Adams shows nowadays? He's playing in Anaheim at some point in late January.
Did Tremonti cancel all those shows? He's doing the Sinatra thing locally, it's on my radar as something to check out but I'm not fully vested so I haven't been following.
I'd check out Metal Allegiance, not just because of MP, but they usually have lots of guests to make the show interesting. I don't really know their music though.

Lately, for some reason, I've been on a Sum 41 kick and stumbled upon listening of a Spotify radio playlist of theirs. It's actually better stuff than I thought. They do have two shows in January. Both costs over 3 digits. One show in a really small venue in San Diego and an festival appearance in Anaheim at a IHeartRadio event called Alter Ego. I mean this radio festival lineup is pretty stacked. Paramore, The 1975, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Black Keys, Bush, Sum 41, etc. Of course, naturally, tickets are hella expensive and I doubt it will dip to below 3 digits in price by show day, but that's something to keep an eye on.

Absolutely buzzing for my first gig of the year on Friday.
Gnome are a 3-piece instrumental stoner rock band from Antwerp, and they are supported by Desert Storm, a stoner metal band from the UK. Tickets were a steal at £15, and a group of us are going to celebrate a buddies birthday. Definitely gonna let my (beard) hair down with this one, get well lubricated and bang my fucking head!

So far I have 2 shows lined up in March. Seeing Swans again (second time overall) and I'm really hyped for that. They're in my top5 favorite bands and the first live show was one of those transcendental experiences, truly something special and more than just a normal live concert. Also seeing the french band Slift for the first time. I quite enjoyed their previous album and they have a new one out early 2024. They're a french psych/stoner/space band with some groovy riffs. Going with my dad to both of these, I'm the bigger Swans guy than him and he's the bigger Slift guy than me but it's cool to have someone to attend shows with who enjoys music just as much as you. :)
Hoping more shows will popup throughout the year, but so far the calendar is looking pretty barebones. But I'm sure through January and February there will be shows announced for April/May etc, further down the line. There's a festival in August that I have attended a couple of times and I would say the likelihood of me attending in some shape or form is fairly high. I didn't jump on the 3 day ticket this year as I did last year, overall the announced bands have been a bit mixed for me. I will probably go, but maybe 1 day or 2 depending on what else is announced. The biggest for me so far is Queens of the Stone Age, a band I like a lot. However I have seen them twice before, so them alone isn't pushing me to get a 3 day festival ticket for 200 dollars or whatever. Next after them is The Smile - a band I like and wouldn't mind seeing live, however I haven't even seen Radiohead live so this being a side project means its not really a "must see" either. Then there's others like Pulp and PJ Harvey that I'm only casually familiar with and wouldn't mind seeing (plenty of time to listen to both and get into them more) but yeah festival tickets are expensive and I need a few more things to get me hyped. But it can change fast, if they book the right band or artist I might buy a ticket in a heartbeat.

I watched an interview with him about his child and the charity. Another reason to go. But honestly, I listened to his Sinatra album this morning, and he sounds incredible singing those songs. Does a great job. If he can perform like that live, this is going to be really good.

I've actually seen Firewind with two top tier vocalists, Herbie and years ago I saw them with Kelly Sundown Carpenter at the helm, he was amazing.

I went to see Gnome at The Joiners in Southampton, on Friday. It was a friends birthday and the tickets were a steal at £15. Gnome are a Belgian stoner/sludge/doom band. Here's a few pics from the night...

The Gnome hat merch is kind of an ingenious idea. They charged £5 a hat and so many people were wearing them, including the band for their entire set! Witnessing a pit full of Gnome hats bobbing about was glorious (you can kinda make them out on the pictures above). The venue was probably only packed a few hundred in, but the sound was great and the band were on top form.
I like the band because they switch from really slow doomy riffs to a more fast paced stoner style with such ease, and the guitarist plays lots of interesting leads. Check 'em out if you ever get the chance.

A gnome pit sounds like a lot of fun!
My first concert of 2024 is in the books last weekend for Mark Tremonti Sings Frank Sinatra! It was a lovely date night (minus the pouring rain) with my gf in Red Bank, which is a very nice town in NJ along a river. Lots of really nice restaurants near the venue. So my gf and I went to a really nice Italian spot for dinner and drinks before the show.
Purchased physical tickets at the box office before the show to save on fees, so it came out to $64 for the two tickets in the last row. The back section was mostly empty so it was nice to have the space and room without feeling cramped as the old theater has some pretty small seats.
No opener for Mark Tremonti, just a lady came out to give a short talk about the charity for down syndrome that the show was for and then off the show started around 8:15. It was an orchestra and Mark. They started with an instrumental song before Mark was introduced to the crowd and he went into Luck Be A Lady. He sounded SO good. As a metal head, this is not my arena, but boy did the whole band sound great. I don't know a ton of Frank Sinatra songs, maybe was familiar with half the set. Between songs Mark would either talk about the history of Frank and the song they were about to perform or he'd talk a bit about him self and the band and why they wanted to play that song, or what it meant to him. It was pretty cool to hear a rock star talk about Frank Sinatra.
The orchestra was a few men in black shirts who were the core of his backing band and members who performed live with Frank in the past. The rest of the band had white shirts and those were the local orchestra that he uses. I guess that makes sense for so many pieces in the band. He mentioned that we were getting more songs than the Atlantic City show, not sure why, but he menitoned a few songs were ones he had never done before. That's honestly really cool because this is a side thing and he's going into deep cuts for this, it just shows the love for the music to me.
Anyway, my dad LOVES Frank Sinatra and it's a family tradition at big parties for my father to sing Summer Wind. So when Mark played this song, I literally was crying. I don't think I've broken down like that at a concert before. Maybe a tear here and there at shows, but this was a full blown cry. Really powerful. Of course you'd never know from my video though (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCf9tNlTYOk). And one thing I liked as well, was the crowd reaction, one of the best pops of the night.
Show ended at 9:30 so it wasn't very long and we were home shortly after 10 which was quite nice honestly. Just a really nice night out with my girl.

The man spends most of his professional career wearing rock/metal based t-shirts and making funny faces while playing guitar. Prior to this project, in all the years I kept track of the various bands he's in, I could not ever imagine him performing in a suit. Here we are now. One of the more productive guitarists in the last however many years doing a side project that requires him to sing in a professional manner, without playing guitar, and doing it well and doing it for charity. Awesome that you get to see that, Cramx.

Thanks, and yeah, my gf is like "whoa, whats wrong?!" I honestly likely wouldn't of even thought to attend if it wasn't for my dad's love of Sinatra. I also bought the Tremonti Sings Sinatra CD at the merch stand to give to my father. But clearly, those feelings of family hit me hard at that moment.

Well, I pulled the trigger. I got a ticket to the iHeartRadio ALTer EGO festival. It's not really a price I want to pay often, but the star power of the line-up is fine (even if they are going to play short 30-something minute sets). It's close by in Anaheim. I can find reliable parking and quite honestly, this is probably the only concert that I note this month that I can have some form of excitement about.

That's a cool line up, those radio shows can be a lot of fun. I'm guessing they'll have the rotating stage so it's non stop music. At least that's how the Audacity concert was last year and the KROQ one I went to many years ago. Enjoy!
Kamelot has been hinting and I'm fairly certain that when they announce their tour on Tuesday it will be Kamelot, Hammerfall, and Ad Infinitum and they will be coming to Starland in NJ, just a matter of what day in April/May. That'll be an awesome tour.

All right, well. Might as well talk about the concert I went to last Saturday. Went to the iHeartRadio ALTer Ego festival at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Saw 8 out of the 9 bands (decided to pass on Fall Out Boy as it was around 11 PM as they started and I decided I need to get on home. They'll be back in the same venue in March with Jimmy Eat World. If ticket prices are in a range I like, I may go for it.) Here's what I thought about those bands.
The Black Keys - They were all right. Solid stripped back rock sounds. The two main guys (the drummer and guitarist/vocalist) showcased their skills well.
Lovelytheband - They were ok as well. They had that one song, Broken, that I heard years ago on radio.
Yellowcard - They were in the middle of a comeback and one of the bands I was looking forward to. The sound could be better, but their performance was good enough to convince me to see them with Third Eye Blind at the Greek Theater later this summer if ticket prices are reasonable.
Sum 41 - Another band that I was looking forward to. Before they came out, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park was a special guest and had a solid ovation from the crowd, and talked about a few things about his current endeavors before announcing Sum 41 to come out on stage. They had a lot of good energy and stuck with a few hits and one new song and I wished they had more than 20 minutes. They have announced an headlining show in Inglewood at Youtube Theater. Any other reasonable venue in LA, but Youtube Theater, would have been dandy for me to go to.
The 1975 - This was the band that everyone in the crowd was looking forward to. I don't think I heard a reaction similar to what The 1975 had since I saw 5 Seconds of Summer back in June 2022. Speaking of which, one of the guys of 5 Seconds of Summer came out to announce The 1975 and he too got a great ovation from the crowd. As for the music, it's ok in my eyes, but nothing that I want to go see their own headlining show for.
Bush - This was the band I wanted to see the most, but they got a bad draw when it comes to the placement, as I think people were treating Bush as their time to their restroom breaks (since there was only 5-10 minutes in between sets). Brent Smith of Shinedown was the special guest to bring out Bush to the stage, and sadly, I might have been the only guy in my section that knew who he was. All in all, yeah, it was a tough going for Bush in terms of crowd reception, but I enjoyed the set. They played Everything Zen, Machinehead, More Than Machines, Nowhere to Go but Everywhere (this was the spot where Gavin Rossdale did his going into the crowd and sing near the people in the seats spot). That may have woken the crowd up as they were receptive to the end of the sets hearing Glycerine and Comedown so it's better to end on a good note.
The Last Dinner Party - Now this was the restroom break for me and couple of other people, but I was still able to catch their short set. All-female band dressed in fancy dinner clothes, playing Alt Rock stuff. They were fine, but nothing that tells me that I need to go see them again in the future at their own shows.
30 Seconds to Mars - Oh goodness, where do I want to begin with this one? One of the guys from Maneskin was the special guest to announce 30 Seconds to Mars. Let's just say I'm glad to experience this as a short-30 min. festival set rather than see them play 90 minutes. First, they had a gospel choir on stage for the whole set. Then Jared Leto (wearing a cape) decided to make his entrance last, while singing in the crowd during Walk on Water as he makes his way to the stage. Then he announced that he's sick and needs the crowd to help him out singing along to Kings and Queens (he probably would do this anyway even if he wasn't sick) and had some small pyro. He had that aura that probably makes him think he was a god. I couldn't tell if he truly felt that way or how much of that was gimmick based. I'm pretty certain that with only two guys on instruments that some of this had a backing track to fill the instrumental space, until they brought out Mikey Way (the bassist for My Chemical Romance). They also played two new songs (one acoustic sounding and one electro-sounding I think).
Leto, as one would expect, does like to talk a lot and he had call us out on, before playing Attack, on how he knows that when we all first heard of them, we were in middle school-age and now we are older, our backs are broken, our legs are worn out, but he still wants this crowd to give all the energy they got. Final song was The Kill (Bury Me) and they went a verse and chorus before Leto was like, "Wait! Something is missing with this one. Oh yeah, we need some fans on stage to sing with us on this one," so he picked a few people from the crowd to come up on stage to finish the song. If this was their headlining show, I would have no quarrels, but in a radio festival where all the bands had limited time, you decided to pull this stuff and we have to wait a few minutes for the people to show up on stage? F that. I would have wanted another 5 minutes of Sum 41 if I knew this was a thing. Overall, I don't know how much I would stomach if they had an extra hour and quite frankly, 35 minutes is good enough for me.
As for the radio festival experience. It was pretty good. About 3.5 hours of live music along with all of the house music being the Alt Rock that I grew up listening on the radio in outlets such as KROQ and the crowd singing along to them (I recall one of those songs was SOAD's Chop Suey! and people in the crowd was peeved when the song track stopped (so that the next band would come out to play) because people wanted to get to the FATHER! part of the song)). That was great.
As for the next concert for me? I don't know. I got options in February. Will see what's out there.

Forbidden is damn good. You'll love their set. I saw them twice in 2023, and Norm Skinner absolutely tears the roof off the place taking over for Russ Anderson. Norm was the absolute perfect fit.

Sadly just sold my ticket for this tonight. I started getting a headache a couple hours ago and I'm just not really feeling it. If someone didn't bite and pay full price for a not sold out show I'd probably just deal with it and go, but since I got my money back, I'd rather hit the couch when I get home today. Also, this was supposed to be my intro to them as I'm not too familiar, so it's kind of a non loss for me. In all seriousness though, I've been watching their concert videos on youtube and while I think they are incredible musicians, the jam band stuff really just gets a bit boring for me. I was hoping to be wowed and drop that feeling, maybe someday I will, but not today.

Forbidden is damn good. You'll love their set. I saw them twice in 2023, and Norm Skinner absolutely tears the roof off the place taking over for Russ Anderson. Norm was the absolute perfect fit.
It's funny, I've met Norm at like 3 different shows, but in the 8 years I've known him I've never seen him live, and they always play near here with Niviane but it's always on a weeknight. Hell of a nice guy though.

I hope this doesn't come across as spammy, but just throwing this out there for any US forumers looking for a good concert in the cities Big Big Train is visiting in March, I can guarantee you will enjoy the show even if BBT or classic prog isn't really your thing. They are all amazing musicians and this tour is kind of a big deal for them finally getting to the states after a bunch of setbacks the last few years (COVID in 2020, and then their lead singer passing unexpectedly in 2021). The most expensive tickets for any of the shows are $75 I think, so they aren't hugely expensive shows.

Last Wednesday was the Extreme and Living Colour show. I wrote most of what I had to say in the Extreme thread so I won't share too much here. Just that it was a really solid fully live rock concert. Very enjoyable and both bands have a lot of similarities so it's a good pairing.

The metalcore show in the big apple was incredible last Friday!
Got to the Palladium Times Square (literally right in the middle of Times Square) 30 minutes before the advertised start of the first band at 6:30 to a very large line to get in. Not surprised being it's sold out, but thought 30 minutes early would be enough time to get in, and it was not. Finally got in at 6:40 and missed the first two songs of the opener Sleep Theory. I was not familiar with them until the day before the show when I decided to sample them and enjoyed it so I wanted to see their full set and sadly, did not. Oh well. They are like a mix of hard rock with R&B. They did a song that legit sounded like if the Weeknd had a distorted guitar. I kind of liked it honestly, it was just catchy. They also did a cover of NSYNC's Bye Bye Bye (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2zNY0ufYuM)by request of their manager :lol After their set, the singer mentioned he'd hang at the merch booth.
Since I had gotten there while the band was playnig, I went right into the GA pit to get close, but pulled back towards the end of their set and eventually found my seat in the back for the next band, Invent Animate. Probably the heaviest band of the night as they leaned more towards the hardcore side of metalcore. Also, probably my least favorite band of the night. Not bad, but didn't really catch me.
After their set I went towards the Sleep Theory merch to see the singer still hanging out. I scooped up their only release, a 6 song EP and he signed it and took a selfie.

I then met up with my cousin. We talked about this concert during Christmas Eve and she told me she could hook us up with good seats. So she arrived and we met up with her friend, the head of security :metal Guy was really cool and he escorted us to the ADA seating section, basically eye level with the band on the side up front. Not the best angle, but pretty close wiht a view. Defintily better than the packed floor or my seat in the back. Also got hooked up with a band "not backstage pass" as it says, but it's clearly the bands touring passes which makes for awesome concert memorabilia so we didn't need her friend to get back and forth to the section. He went right back to work catching all the crowd surfers :lol
Up next was The Plot In You. I never even sampled them and was not familiar at all with them. Actually enjoyed them quite a bit. Crowd got real lively for them too. Metalcore as well, but showed some variety.
Next up with Beartooth who we were all there for. Security moved us to the opposite ADA section as the owner of the building and his friends/business people crowded the section with their suits :lol Which made me very happy to move to a spot that had less people and a slightly better view.
Boy the crowd was wild for Beartooth. Sets like that and with that view are why I love these wild heavy metal shows. I can safely watch the insanity and get some decent video. Sadly the stage lighting was occassionally flahsing at me making the video not come out great at times, but when it came out, oh boy it showed a wild crowd. They also sounded really good. They play to a backing track for some songs, but you could definintely tell everyone on stage was live.
The singer did a solo segment in the crowd. Probably the lowest point in the set as he talked for a bit too much about his personal struggles and overcoming. The message was good, but it jsut went too long as people started yelling to play music. One thing he mentioned, he wants to play Madison Square Garden. That's a goal to look forward too and I'm sure they are feeling good selling out basically the entire US tour and having a #1 rock album, but they have a long way to go to headline MSG. If they do, I'd like to be there though and I have the video of him saying it to reference.
Really awesome set. My 3rd time seeing them, but first as a headliner. They earned it and it was incredible.

Holy butts. I just got an email from Ticketmaster saying that they are sending me the $30.00 for the Matchbox Twenty tickets I sold back in last May. They had spent months emailing me asking for me to provide my SSN to them for tax purposes and I don't trust Ticketmaster with my SSN so I decided to not send it and not care much for the $30.00. I guess I won out in the end of this waiting war.

Already saw Incubus at Hollywood Bowl last year playing Morning View in full and that was great. Don't care much about Lamb of God and I've already seen Mastodon last year at the same place they playing this year, The Forum. As for Creed, I'm still waiting things out to see if I can get cheap tickets for their show in San Bernardino, otherwise, it's just me moaning that, most likely, Alter Bridge is going to have no shows announced for this year, which is expected, but I was just holding out for the slim hope.

Mr Big last week mostly stunk because Eric Martin was sick. Rest of the band was good, but Eric's singing was difficult to watch and listen to making it one of the worst concerts I've seen sadly. I understand it is not the band's fault, but yeah, it stunk.

The original voice of Foreigner. It amazes me that Lou is the only original member of Foreigner still touring and he isn't in Foreigner :lol apparently his backing band is made up of a couple x foreigner musicians which to me, makes this much closer to the original band than what is currently touring their never ending farewell. I'm honestly a bit annoyed with them. They played my local amphitheater last summer as part of their farewell tour and are coming back to the same venue this summer. Fuck that. There's a big part of me that wants to go to this instead out of spite or something :lol But honestly, this is cheap and local and will be different than what I've seen from Foreigner already.
Opting not to go to the Machine Head / Fear Factory / Orbit Culture show on Saturday.

Definitely start listening to their latest album Fauna. They are playing it entirely live, plus a second set reflecting the rest of their music. Given two days and no idea what else they are playing, you should dive into that album to get familiar if you don't want to go in completely blind. I'll be going to the NJ show.

Yeah, but lets be real. They are doing a 3 hour show and the music is dense prog metal. It kind of requires a bunch of listens to get to know it. Of course, I think their musicianship is incredible so even if the songs don't connect, it may be worth seeing live for to watch some incredible performances. Hope you enjoy it and I'm personally very interested in what they end up playing for the second set.

Last Friday I saw Lou Gramm. Although it was advertised as Lou Gramm, the backgrop he used called it Lou Gramm All Stars. But lets be real, not sure there were any true all stars in his backing band, everyone was there to see and hear the original voice of Foreigner.
Got a ticket at the box office before the show to save like $15 in livenation fees. Decent attendance, not sold out, but not empty although my back balcony area was pretty empty. The lady at the box office seemed confused when I specificall said I'll take the row with no one in it :lol
It was just Lou, so the show starts at 8:15 with a quick introduction and history video before he came out and they performed Feels Like THe First Time. I thought he sounded pretty good. Like I didn't realize he still would sound so young, especially considering he looks so old and fragile. I understand he had a brain tumor removed over 20 years ago and that lead to him physically not looking so great. But all that didn't matter once he started singing. He wasn't perfect and definitely showed his age throughout the evening, but generally, his voice held up and just sounded like the original voice of Foreigner. I think Kelly does a great job fronting Foreigner these days, but Lou still has it in his voice.
No surprise the set was almost exlcusively Foreigner hits. He did also play two of his solo songs and would occassionally give some history of the song about to come up next. One moment really stuck out, when he had a forgoteful moment talking about the upcoming song, and said "this song I wrote with...." and just drew a blank and an uhh and finally a "somebody" :lol It was kind of a funny moment but also kind of an old man struggling to remember moment which in the same breathe is not funny, but kind of sad. The keyboardist told him the name and he said it and went on with the song. You can find that at 10:40 in my video.
Now the bad.... the All Stars! I thought his backing band was just OK. The guitarist was fine and the live saxophone was great, and needed, but the drums were BAD. Turns out it's Lou's brother on drums. He was just off timed a bunch of times and his playing generally just felt off. Also, Lou would bang on a cowbell during a bunch of songs and it was also BAD. Like I don't mind the cowbell use in general, but when Lou would bang on it, not only would his bangs inconsistent, his timing was also off at times. it just stood out like a sore thumb. I think I even laughed at one point where I kept thinking to myself "Please put down the cowbell!" :lol
The crowd was pretty tame. Sat the entire time and even at the end, didn't really wake up. I thought Urgent was probably the highlight of the set with the sax player going into the crowd. Also the ballads were really good. After the show, Lou did a meet and greet with purchase at his merch stand. He walked right past me as he made his way to the merch table and even waved at me when I yelled "Lou!".
Funny how after this show it was just announced today that Bret Michaels is performing this summer locally with also Lou Gramm as a special guest. I guess I may see him again this year. It seems like it would be a great idea to have Lou perform with Foreigner again though, he can still sing.

My first show of the year in the bag...Haken in Los Angeles. They played for 3+ hours and on top of their new album in full, they dropped two epics and two near epics. Don't think I need to elucidate any further. Just fuckin epic all around, a top tier show for me, and really sets a high bar for the year.
Also gotta hang with El Barto, talk about the cherry on the sundae....

Scored a great Valentines Day gift for my gf yesterday.... GWAR tickets! :lol My local venue had a 2 for 1 sale yesterday so I scored that since we talked about going together. Obviously it was not her real gift, but I did include it with the rest for fun.
I took off work tomorrow to go to Atlantic City to see one of my favorite bands for something like the 25th time, 311!

That's awesome. They have become a bucket list band at this point. I assume they will tour the US at some point, but who knows with their age. And if/when they do, the prices may be out of my range.

Added Japanese metalcore/alt rock Survive Said the Prophet, April 5 in Berkeley. I know next to nothing about these guys, but they did play with Nemophila in Japan, and the few songs I heard were pretty catchy. Plus it's a Friday so fuck it why not?

I would think they would do well in these parts. They will be in Echoplex in LA on a Monday. Never been to that venue, so that's something for me to look into and check parking and stuff.

Saw TesseracT yesterday and they were even better then expected. Their sound was spot on from the first seconds, great show with the lights, lots of energy and the new songs are brilliant in a live setting. Can't think of a better singer/frontman then Dan at the moment. His range and skillset are impressive and even more impressive in combination with the energy he brings on stage.
Great night and Unprocessed was the best support act I've seen in a while.
Also added a few shows at my local venue. They have a subscription plan which allows me to see an unlimited number of shows in their small room for 75 Euro's a year. Taake, Thy Catafalque, Bell Witch, Long Distance Calling and Ruins of Beverast are on the list for the next months.

Last Friday I took the day off work to drive down to Atlantic City for a 311 concert. What a great night. I saw Dirty Heads at this casino venue last summer and really enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to seeing a similar band at the same spot. Shocked to say the turn out was wayyy better than expected. The floor was sold out and most of the seats sold. Got a seat at the box office to save on fees, but was shocked we couldn't buy floor tickets. The casino is really nice, Ocean, as it's one of the newer ones in AC. Had a great dinner with my gf. I lost about $200 in gambling, but couldn't be put down too hard since I was just having a really good time.
They had one opener who went on at 9pm (yeah, late show) but I didn't catch them, (I was too busy losing money). 311 came on at 10pm and did a 90 minute set. The sound was really good, but you could also clearly hear the mistakes. Nothing serious besides a guitar solo completely out, but I love the live sound they have and have always had. Nick's voice has aged, it sounds like he just smoked really and he really gets the help from SA's vocals that still sound mostly the same. I don't mind Nick's aged voice, but for as great of a shape he is in, his voice needs the most care. It's not like this was a some big tour. Just 3 dates on the east coast.
Well, besides that raw live sound they have, what made the show so good was the setlist. They actually put in a couple deep cuts. They are known for doing different sets each night, but the AC show went a tad bit deeper. Two songs from Don't Tread on Me?! Shocked. They almost never play this one, 311 - There's Always An Excuse LIVE @ Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort Atlantic City NJ 2/16/2024 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44DlDqxWeX4) Besides the set, the crowd was really into it. We sneaked onto the floor during the drum solo and it was a lot more fun down there than in the seats. The next morning, the bassist PNUT, liked my post on twitter about the show and all was well in the world. I think that was around show number 25 for me seeing them, and this was a lot better than my last time just 8 months earlier in the same city. They surpassed DT a couple years ago on being my most seen band.

when i was in my jam band era seeing a lot of phish shows a lot of the fanbase had overlapping interest in 311; they were never really my thing personally but i feel like i know a lot about them via osmosis spending time around a lot of their fans at phish shows haha. glad you had a great time, sounds like it was a great setlist for a longtime fan

Last Thursday Pantera and Lamb of God performed at Madison Square Garden.
My buddy really hooked me and some of our high school friends up good. He got us into his work's executive suite. I had never seen this at MSG before.

There was a private entrance to the suites so no line to get in. The suite itself is actually floor level of the arena. Go through a few small hallways under the 100 level seats and into a private room with couchs, tvs, a buffet, and a private bar with bartender. Everything besides hard liqour is included, so I had quite a few coronas over the night. Food included sushi, korean fried chicken, casadillas, and burgers plus some finger foods and desserts. The TV had the Rangers vs. Devils game (being played in NJ, which also added a lot of fun to our train ride which had all the fans from both sides riding) so some solid overdose of entertainment. Besides us, there were maybe 8 other people from his work there who all seemed nice although we mostly didn't mingle. The only thing the sucked was from in the suite, you couldn't see the stage or anything going on in the arena. So you'd walk through a small hallway and out of it you'd be right on the floor, but the security would block you from going to the seats or pit and force you into the stands. We were in the front row of the seats just above the floor. Incredible view!
We all just ate/drank/chilled during Childbite, the opening band. Lamb of God came on at 8pm. The Garden had mostly filled up at this point. Thought they were really good. Randy has so much stage energy running around. The band sounded really tight. Pyro was used in a few songs. My 3rd time seeing them, and probably my favorite mostly for being much closer the previous times and just getting to see them in arena too. Before they finished the set wiht Redneck, it looked like the singer's family came out and sang happy birthday to him and even had a cake that looked pretty metal :metal
Pantera came on at 9:30. They sounded really good, very live and raw. Phil's vocals were solid although his speaking voice was kind of hard to listen to at times. Lots of pyro and video screen, solid stage show. Zakk was enjoyable to watch. I saw them open for Metallica last year and this was definitely a better sounding and better show to watch this time around. Sadly, they only did two more songs than that opening slot. Kind of expected a bit more. The Floods guitar solo was pretty epic. The performance with Walk with a bunch of people on stage was a lot of fun. The venue was packed and it looked like there was a solid mosh pit on the GA part of the floor. Great night that ended with Phil doing a mic drop singing Stairway to Heaven by himself.

So I got an email from SeatGeek regarding the A7X ticket I bought for the show in Cleveland telling me that I got an upgrade from a 200 section to a C100 section. Don't know if I will get any free stuff outside of being in a lower-level seat that's probably worth twice the price I paid for when I bought the ticket, but this sounds neat. Still haven't gotten the ticket transfer yet though. All I see on the SeatGeek page is stuff like "This ticket will be available in time for the event." and "Order confirmed. The seller has confirmed your order. Your ticket will be delivered right here before the event," but I'm sure things will sort itself out by then.

On Wednesday I went to see Gwar at my local ballroom. Bought a great 2 for 1 tickets deal on Valentines Day and took my girlfriend to this. I had seen Gwar 5 times previously and knew what to expect, my gf had only heard the stories from me. She wanted to go and she was thoroughly entertained :lol
There were two opening bands, but I only caught the ending of the second one, Cancer Bats. I didn't think they were that bad. Not entirely sure what genre they were, maybe stoner metal? They did a Beastie Boys cover of Sabotage that was cool.
Gwar did about an hour and 15 minute headline set. What made this show interesting was that it's the first tour with the new guitarist (Gwar actually has no orignal members) and after the first song, they introduced him in an interesting way in regards to their whole alien story. Something about fucking a dolphin and being confused if the new guitarist was the same as the old guitarist :lol (they have similar costumes, I think it's because he's new). Anyway, I thought it was kind of cool to make it part of the show. Plenty of blood was shot into the crowd as they killed different creatures throughout the night, and of course Biden. The setlist was fresh, to me, and included a lot of newer songs and some rarer old songs. Nice mix for me even though I didn't know most of the newer songs, they were fine, and it was just nice to see a good rotation of songs since the last time I saw them. At one point a fan got onto the stage and took a beating from the crew :lol
I think this was also the most wild of a crowd I've seen for Gwar. The venue had one side curtain off so it wasn't a sellout and it wasn't really packed either, but the front of the stage had a lot of people going wild and crowd surfing. A really great crowd overall I'd say. Their sound was pretty good, the new guitarist was shredding, and the band sounded pretty good overall. I honeslty don't know how they perform in those costumes. Really fun night out with my gf, she even got a Gwar patch!

Ok, finally got enough chill back into my system to report on last night's show. Probably the heaviest show I've ever been to, the lineup was Extermination Dismemberment, Ghost Bath, Mental Cruelty, and headliners Ov Sulfur in a 200 person dive club all for the low price of 30 bucks. The headliners were the only one's I was familiar with were the headliners, and I purposely didn't research the other guys. Venue barely had a stage, and a wide floor with benches on either side, I chose the bench right against the stage to take it somewhat easy (turned out to be a great vantage point cause during the sets I could stand on the bench and get that killer view of the crowd fucking losing it).
First band, Extermination Dismemberment were fun, good starters and all, but nothing mindblowing.
Second up was Ghost Bath, and these dudes were impressive. They had a progressive death metal sound that was really dense and rich, and delivered a very high energy set. Dark as fuck though, all their songs were about suicide, and the music reflected that, but musically they were spot fucking on.

Next up was Mental Cruelty, the surprise of the night. These guys were insanely intense, and brought it fucking hard with a dynamic performance by the lead singer, he got that crowd going hard, and man did they respond. This was the set where I was glad I had my elevated vantage point, it was so damn intense watching them go at it, the back and forth between the crowd and the band was truly a delight.

Finally headliner Ov Sulfur came out, and I think the crowd was spent cause they didn't get the response they should have even though musically I felt they were the most solid of the night. Still, a good enough crowd, with a solid pit that got a bit downgraded when a crowd killer got lose in there. I mean if the whole crowd is into it fine, but if it's a normal pit and you go around punching and kicking people you need to fuck off). They played some of my favorites but skipped Oblivion which bummed me a bit, but all in all it was an insane evening which will certainly broaden my choice of shows in the future.

I ended up buckling and buying tickets to Incubus in Tampa. I was surprised by a couple on things; first, I think tickets have been on sale for a couple weeks now but I was able to log in and buy 5th row tickets. There are tickets left everywhere in the arena; two, the price is a little nuts. I didn't plan on buying tickets so close to the stage but the price was $330 for 5th row, or $324 for the first section of raised seating. By comparison my Tool tickets this year were $216 for the floor and were sold out almost immediately.
Anyway, I can't wait to see one of my favorite albums played live and hang out with my brother.

Well, I'm back from being in Cleveland for A7X and Pittsburgh to watch a Penguins game. I'll write about my thoughts (probably not) in the respective threads at some point this week.
Anywho, tours being announced in the last few days.
Weezer celebrating their Blue album. LA show will be in the new Intuit Dome in Inglewood. I hate traveling to Inglewood, so this will be a pass for me.
Five Finger Death Punch with Marilyn Manson. SoCal show will in the Honda Center. I will pass since I don't really care about either bands.
Breaking Benjamin, Staind, and Daughtry are doing a tour together in the Fall. SoCal show will also be in the Honda Center. This one I may consider. Breaking Benjamin should really need to get some new stuff out or change out parts of their setlist for tours like these. It's getting really stale for them at this point without having new stuff. This would be the 3rd straight year they will do a co-headlining show in the OC. Other than that, seeing Staind could be fine. I may already catch Daughtry prior to this if I end up going to that festival bill in San Bernardino that Creed is headlining in the summer. Will check for some cheap tickets throughout the months.

Yeah, Breaking Benjamin has milked their set to death touring it for the last like 7 years now :lol I do understand they are working on a new album, just haven't heard anything about a release. Hopefully soon. That show isn't coming near me, which is fine. Both Staind and BB played locally last year so it would be odd to have them come back again, especially when Staind is playing locally in April.

Looks like Slash is going to do a Summer tour based around a Blues cover album he has coming out. LA show is in Greek Theater on a Saturday. That's a maybe. I don't know if my attention span can handle a Blues concert.

Saw Enslaved with Svalbard and Wayfarer yesterday.
Wayfarer was great. Pretty unique sound with the americana influences in their black metal. I loved their last album and it was nice to see them live.
Svalbard was the highlight of evening for me. So much energy and connection with the public. One of the younger bands to watch over the next few years.
Enslaved was uncomfortable for me. One of those bands I should like but just don´t connect with. Third time I´ve seen them live and it felt akward.
Their podium presence feels forced and not authentic. Starting the encore with a drum solo was quite strange. I understand why people adore this band but I can safely conclude it´s not for me. Longest 90 minute show I´ve ever seen ::)

Went and saw Prong/Voivod over the weekend. I'm not much of a Voivod fan, but as I've been saying for 30 years, Prong fucking rules. I saw them open for Flotsam on the Beg to Differ tour and immediately went out to buy the album. Good show Friday night, despite a pretty dead (and small) crowd. Tommy Victor strikes me as one of those guys that thinks himself the luckiest man alive for being able to do what he does. He was a support act playing for 300 people, and he acted like there was no place else he'd rather be. Hard not to appreciate that, and it really embiggens their live show. I wouldn't have paid the ~$48 or so face price, but the $20 I paid for a resell ticket (from a guy who paid $10) was a bargain. Given a similar opportunity people should check them out.
As I said, not much of a Voivod guy, but that drummer is a fucking beast.

Apparently, the usual city vs promoter fighting on how who should pay for what played a big role in not keeping the venue around or other similar building projects alive. Darn, I liked that venue. It had free parking in every show and it wasn't a slog to drive to compare to driving to Downtown LA or Inglewood. No wonder, the radio rock bands have announced their tours, this year, to be at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
I probably should have seen the writing on the wall when one of the side by side screens, where they would show camera shots of the band or crowd, were out for the entire night when I was there for Shinedown and Papa Roach, but I just thought, "Well, it's almost the end of the concert season. They will probably sort that out by next year's season."

That was one seriously odd duck of an amphitheater. Never seen one quite like that, with the seats behind the lawn before. Also interesting that it was only 7 years old.
I wouldn't be surprised if they shutter our local shed. I dig the place, but I only have cause to go out there once every five years or so because tours hit the arena. It seems to be reserved for nostalgia acts, for the most part. Texas heat doesn't help it much, either.

Saw Orbit Culture on their first EU headline clubtour. Small venue sold out with around 500 people and a good part of the floor being one big mosh and circlepit.
I will take any chance to see this band in a small venue. They will be playing much bigger crowds within the next few years.
Songs are agressive, melodic and catchy at the same time. Drummer is a beast.

Pop punk weekend continues for me with Set It Off and Crown the Empire tonight, but wow last night Fall Out Boy at the Garden were incredible. I was never a huge fan of them growing up, but their live show is top notch and they won me over last summer when I saw them for the first time. They just impressed me so much last night. I had such a great time during their set and from the last row of the arena, the place was LOUD. Not sure if Set It Off is going to be able to follow that up, but the smaller GA concert should have good energy tonight. Both shows were/are sold out, other than this rain, this is shaping up to be a great weekend of music that I'm shocked I am even a fan of honestly.

Back to that Fall Out Boy concert last Friday..... wow just wow they are so good. I can't get that show out of my head.
We got there pretty early, much earlier than I expected coming from work and meeting my gf in NYC before the show so we actually watched the entire show.
First band, Games We Play, hit the stage at 6:30. Basically a young large guy who was pretty charismatic and engaging, but felt like he was the onyl one even live of the 3 piece band. Felt like their entire set was backing tracks. It just was not for me at all. Even if they had a full band, I don't think the songs were for me. They only did 4 songs and a lot of talking for a 20 minute set.
Next up were Hot Mulligan. My 3rd time seeing them, but first time really seeing them and being more aware of what they are. I felt pretty bummed by their set. I thought for playing MSG, they'd make a bigger deal about it. They did their same opening set without much crowd interaction. HOnestly felt like going through the motions for them which I did not expect. I did not like their set.
My gf and I were literally in the last row at the Garden and we wanted to grab some food between sets and I know the better food is down below so we went down to the lower bowl to grab food and I almost walked right into the singer of Games We Play. Shook his hand and was given a Fueled by Ramen sticket :lol He seemed nice, and I felt bad for talking to him in a positive way when I really didn't like their set, but there was no way I was going to say that to his face. Also, while running into the opener is fairly common in the smaller shows, but not really something I've experienced in an arena before.
Jimmy Eat World was next and we were still eating when they started. I was in no rush to get back to my seat. This was my 3rd time seeing them and I never really cared for them besides the one hit song. When we got back to our seats about half way through their set, I felt bored. At least the little kid next to us was LOVING it and while his screaching voice singing was a bit annoying, I honestly enjoyed watching his happiness to the music. I do think the ending of their set was better as the arena finally stood up for The Middle to end their set.
I will say, at this point, I felt pretty dissapointed with the show. I didn't like any of the 3 opening sets. My gf didn't either and she let me know that this show sucked so far :rollin
Well that all changed quickly once Fall Out Boy took the stage. First few songs were just loaded with pyros and fireworks, huge bangs, and energetic songs with the arena erupting singing along. From the last row of the veneu, you could hear the crowd singing along so loud for some of these songs. It was AWESOME. They mentioned they chose these songs specifically for a sold out Madison Square Garden. At that point I knew we were going to get some cool songs and something different. They have been doing this "Magic 8 ball" thing for the tour where basically they play whatever song the magic 8 ball says each night making each night special with at least one rare and different song each night. The 8 ball didn't come out yet, but it might as well have.
The lighting rig above the band came down real low for the next few songs. Basically down to right above the drummer's head and the band all performed under it. Kind of made for a crappy view for me in the back, but I think the idea was the make the people in the front feel more intimate with the band as they went through a string of older and rarer songs. We got a couple songs right off the bat that haven't been played this tour. At least the top of the lighting rig had some pyro to keep us without a good view entertained.
When that part of the set finished, out came a huge dog head from behind the stage, swaying back and forth. This Ain't a scene, its a goddamn Arms Race had the entire venue fist bumping. Balloons came out for the following song, before the fog came out to set the stage for a softer song that has some really awesme and powerful vocals, straying quite differently from the pop punk songs that had mostly been played up till this point. That song (Heaven, Iowa) was a highlight for me.
A few songs later, during Fake Out, they asked everyone to shine their phone's light... with a twist. Earlier in the night they were handing out little pink slips of paper. You were supposed to put the paper over your light for this song (the paper even said to do it for this song). Next up was a really interesting part of the night and a part where the band also often changes things up. Out came a grand piano and the singer solo. He did a few parts of a few different songs including some covers, sort of in a medley although the songs weren't connected, he would just play a part of each of them. During this part of the show they brought out two ladies, Daisy Grenade, to sing a song together. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2xrDOtUm5g) I wasn't familair with this song, but my gf was, and it was a completely different piano version of the song with the two girls singing the leads with the main singer adding layers. It was quite incredible. The song didn't really win me over, but the performance and the one time uniqueness is exactly what I love in concerts.
They also did the title track from the newest album while the piano was out since that song has a piano as lead, not guitar, and it was another of the top moments for me in the concert. This and Heaven, Iowa, really just blew me a way as great softer songs. Some spoken word by the bassist who did some magic and dissapeared while on top of the piano. This was all part of the set up to have him appear in the crowd shortly after to perform Dance Dance. Kind of Kiss like in terms of the one player being solo on a solo stage in the back of the arena. After the one song, he walked along the venue to return to stage, never stopped playing.
We then came to the Magic 8 Ball part, and we got 2 songs! One was an older song that had never been played in full live before. Another song was a cover song by a band called The Academy Is (I'm not familiar with them or the song) which had the singer of the band singing it with Fall out Boy. They had never done that song live.
They then finished the set with the same 4 songs they do every night, 4 hit songs, which honestly at this point all felt excessive. I honeslty felt like they had up to that point won me over 10 times with that set, at 25 songs played, doing the final 4 just felt like even more than icing on the cake. Their whole set was around an hour and 50 minutes, 29 songs (roughly). The best set I've seen this year so far from set list, performance, stage show, and crowd.
ALso just to add, Fall Out Boy felt VERY live to me. They do use some backing tracks for some songs, but it felt like the backing tracks were mixed low. It very much felt like a live rock concert.

Another review...
the night after Fall Out Boy, was Set It Off, also a sold out concert but at the much smaller Irving Plaza. They played the same venue 2 years ago and it didn't sell out, so this was cool to see them get a better turn out.
There were too openers, but it was raining so hard all day, we decided to not leave the house until much later to avoid the rain and therefore missed both openers. Set It Off were a lot of fun as usual. I just hate how not live they sound besides the singer. I'm used to it now, but still hate it especially since their newest music is heavier than before so more reliant on the guitars that just don't sound right to me. The main vocals are definitely live though. He was holding the mic out to crowd surfers that you could hear sing and he's just not perfect live either so you hear the faults. He's a charismatic front man and that's really the draw of their live show.
Set included all 5 new songs since their last album release and a bunch of older songs, not really much from their previous album which was a bummer to me. THey did do a like 10 song medley that included The Magic 8 which was a song from the previous album not played live yet which was probably the highlight of the show for me, especially since the singer grabbed what looked like a Magic 8 Ball in a funko box from someone in the crowd and sung with it waving around.
The crowd was ALL young people, about half girls half guys. SO definitely a different mix from my typical shows, but once again, expected. THey had a mosh pit going most of the night with lots of crowd surfers. For the encore, I got in :lol I think the young people saw me and then just started throwing crowd surfers at me :lol It was fun.

I might bite the bullet and go Thursday as well, as the line up is so damn good. Friday will be killer though, as I can see Sign, Ihsahn and Meshuggah (among others). It'll be my first time seeing all three bands! If I can afford Thursday as well I can also catch AVKRVST, Earthside, Conan, Red Fang and Baroness.
The line up is just so loaded.

i saw glass beach in Denver a few nights ago.
the show was cool and the music ruled and i had a good time. noticed that about 80-90% of attendees were wearing covid masks, which i found odd since i can't remember the last time i saw that much masking (like even during the pandemic? lol). i think there was some social media post i missed because i was one of the few who didn't have a mask (tho i would have worn one if they gave them out or asked us to bring one, i don't mind that much i guess)

Looks like you'll be limited to GA at Red Rocks. You're gonna need to be there at doors or else it's kind of a bummer. That's a shame because the parking lot there is a great place to hang out and pre-game.

I dont mind GA. Been there a few times before including with GA. And I also would likely get there early to see all the bands and enjoy the atmosphere anyway. But that stuff would still need to get planned, I just don't see GA being an issue. 311 shows are meant for GA too (even though I know this isn't a floor). Always have great encounters with people at their shows and I'd imagine the Colorado folks to be much nicer than the NJ people I'm used to :lol

Darn. Well, that's sorta a blessing in disguise for me if they weren't able to make it to the LA show as well. I really don't trust the parking around the Echoplex area. Apparently, the area around it has only metered street parking where there's free parking at 9 PM and no well-rated enough secured garages and that's not really assuring me enough to go to that area.
Therefore, the next concert for me may be Starset at the Anaheim House of Blues at the end of April.

I'm needing a show sooner than later, and Sleepytime Gorilla is playing at a favorite venue next Saturday. I literally know nothing of them other than seeing their name around here, but may hit it up just for the heck of it.

There's only one date announced right now (Humphrey's in San Diego, and tickets go on sale tomorrow), but supposedly this is a real tour. I've seen 62 dates bandied about. Definitely one I'll see a couple of times.

That King Crimson tribute concert is doing two shows in the Greater LA Area. The United Theater on Broadway in LA (never been there before, but apparently it's near the Orpheum theater) and The City National Grove of Anaheim (right close to Angels Stadium). I shall pass.
In the meantime, I'm looking at the schedule for April. Only two concerts intrigue me this month. Bruce Dickinson at the Observatory in Santa Ana (resale is at $132.00. If it gets below $100.00, that gets me buying it) and Starset at the House of Blues.

Ooo, Beat looks interesting. I know little of King Crimson, but I do like Discipline, and have sampled Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair, since they are kind of a loose trilogy, or at least a specific era. I also know their material (and their lineup?) before and after was quite different. I know KC was a big influence for Danny Carey, and I realized that after re-listening to Indiscipline. I might add to my list for this year.

On Easter Sunday my gf and I went to see the final show of the US tour for Avenged Sevenfold in NJ. I managed to buy tickets the day of the show and scored a good deal to get tickets in the suite level seats that include an all you can eat buffet. My gf had advised that getting thsoe tickets wouldn't make sense since we would be coming from her parents for an early Easter dinner, but the price point was cheaper than seats in the lower bowl so it was worth it. The food was actually pretty good too, and while I wasn't hungry, I still made a full plate and grabbed some snacks for the seat.

There was an early opener that we missed, I don't even remember who it was. But we got there in time to watch the entire Poppy set. I don't know how I feel about her music, some songs I enjoyed, some I hated. But I can say that the live performance was garbage. I really do think the drums and guitar were live, because they often did sound live, but it's soooo heavy backing track that it didn't feel live at all. The vocals for the msot part didn't sound live either, although I think she is live with an effect on top of a backing track of her voice so it's really hard to get any feeling of a live rock/metal show from that performance. Poppy was easy on the eyes though, wearing a skin color bunny suit, it almost looked like she was hardly wearing anything from my seat. THey did the new Bad Omens and Poppy colab song which was the highlight of their set for me. She also didn't say a single thing between sets other than thank you at the end. ANotehr reason why it felt like the set was hitting the play button and just miming it.
After a long break, Avenged Sevenfold came out. I thought their sound and visuals were significantly better than the MSG show last year. The visuals could have just been from having a better seat, but the sound was soooo much better. They sounded really good to me, and while they do use backing tracks, they also sounded very live to me. I also loved how the singer took a moment to talk about Easter. He basically ripped their booking agent for booking them on Easter, then put on some bunny ears becasue the entire front row of the crowd was wearing them, and then said Jesus Christ couldn't make it, but they had Johnny Christ so everyone was spending their night with JC in the end. He also changed the lyrics in The Stage to "Johnny Christ was born to die" which I thought was a cool thing to do given the day. Also, during the short drum solo, he kept talking about Easter food and gravy :lol All those things are likely putting this into my top 10 concert moments of 2024. Thought the Easter references and the buffet at the venue were great.
They ended the show with Cosmic, which was my favorite song to come out in 2023 and a song they did not play last time. In fact, there were a few changes to the set that were all really awesome for me. Great set!

When I saw A7X in Cleveland, the first band for the A7X tour was this DJ named Sullivan King. I actually liked that guy more than Poppy as an opening act. He had pyro, great visuals, and he had moments where he was singing a few vocal lines, and playing guitar here and there. Naturally, he threw in some snippets of well-known songs in the mix like Linkin Park's Bleed it Out, the piano intro to MCR's Welcome to the Black Parade, Rob Zombie's Dracula, etc.
Poppy was pretty boring to me. This was only the 4th instance I can recall where I dozed off during a set (other instances was Periphery at a festival in 2019, the guy that opened for Telsa/Lynyrd Skynyrd in Irvine in 2022, Blue October when they opened for Goo Goo Dolls in LA in 2022, and Poppy). Visuals were bleak and I agree with Cramx, her vocals had that processed effect that doesn't come off as "live", and she said nothing at all to address the crowd other than good night at the end of the show. Not really something note that makes me go, "I need to see this again."
A7X was awesome. I wished they had some pyro in their set, especially in Shepherd of Fire, but the visuals were great, especially the visuals they had that gives the signal that they were going to play a song from Life is But a Dream. Nightmare had the biggest singalong of that night I feel, especially in the bridge section. I also appreciate them throwing some good deep cuts as well. I have a bigger appreciation for Save Me when I read they were playing it, this tour, than I did when I first heard the song in the Nightmare album playthrough, a long long time ago.
I wish I can find deals in shows where there are suite seats that comes with a buffet that are cheaper than lower bowl seats, but maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Not that I really needed to eat at the show in Cleveland. I had a nice veggie burrito from a solid burrito place and Horchata prior to getting into the arena.

For my venue, Prudential Center, those seats aren't sold on live nation, only through stubhub. So the prices fluctuate a lot. They were twice the price for the lower bowl up until the day of the show. I'm looking to try and get the same seats for Judas Priest, but they so far have not gone down in price. Also, the seats themselves are more comfy and you have a good view from that section. Probably my favorite seats at that venue, but just not always something that's in my price range.

Tuesday was a big party in NYC for the interesting foreign trio of Korpiklaani, Visions of Atlantis, and Illumishade. Solid turn out, although not sold out at the 500 capacity Gramercy Theater. Got myself the same seat I've had for quite a few concerts at this venue over the last year. The show started at 7pm with Illumishade from Switzerland. Their first ever tour of the US and a fairly new band with their second album having just been released. The singer asked the crowd if they knew who they were and was shocked to hear a good cheer back. There was also a small mosh pit for them that the gutiarist noted was a first ever for them. Wow! I mean, their music isn't super moshy, more headbanging because of the djenty gutiaring at times, but yeah, still a bit shocked that no one's ever moshed for them before. I thought they were pretty good and maybe a bit all over the place in style, but I dug it and the singer was really giving it all. I bought their new album after their set and got a selfie with the singer who was hanging by the merch table.
Next up was Visions of Atlantis. They were the band I was there to see the most. Thought they were awesome in my two introductory concerts to them last year at ProgPower and the follow up NYC show. They have a new album coming out soon, so no surprise they did an awesome live rendition of their new single Armada, but they also did two unreleased new songs. Since the tour had just started, I was one of the first to get to hear this new music. I thought of the songs, Monsters, was actually really good. The mosh pit got a big bigger for them and their music is faster paced, more power metal, so that seemed more natural. The live dual vocals were really good again. The floor went into a huge row pit, again. It was a really fun set!
Headliners, Korpiklaani, were the band I was least familiar with. I don't really listen to folk metal, but they were a ton of fun! Definitely got a part vibe from them as the mosh pit went up another level. Their music is super energetic with blazing accordian and viiolin solos. The singer looks like a finnish version of a rastafarian. Their stage had a lot of plants and just a very trippy vibe to it all. I really enjoyed their set. I guess I could say they are a finnish and metal version of Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly. Most of the songs were in Finnish so I really didn't understand any of it especially sicne I didn't know the songs, but still enjoyed it. They just had a new album come out as well so all three bands did sets heavy of new 2024 music, and I LOVED it! Great concert overall.

I wish I can find deals in shows where there are suite seats that comes with a buffet that are cheaper than lower bowl seats, but maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Not that I really needed to eat at the show in Cleveland. I had a nice veggie burrito from a solid burrito place and Horchata prior to getting into the arena.

The few times I got suite tickets off stubhub, food was not included. You are right about that. But when I went in the Bank of America suite with my friend who works there, free booze and buffet. (free to me, I'm sure BOA paid for the food and booze).
Some venues do have food included options not in suites like what I had at Prudential Center in NJ, or when I saw Metallica in Atlanta at Mercedes Benz stadium they had an all you can eat buffet section that you could buy on livenation.

Man with a Mission is a fun band to watch. Saw them last year at their own show in LA. Crowd was very jacked for them. Don't know how the people going to Red Rocks is going to react to a bunch of guys wearing wolf heads and playing Japanese rock, but I hope it's a good reception.

Bailed on the BtBaM show last week, didn't feel up to the 2 hour drive in Friday afternoon traffic. Next up is Babymetal a week from today with Dethlok and Nekrogoblikon. The Wednesday show they got Dragonforce instead of Nekrogoblikon, which'd be cool, but I'm 100% only going for Babymetal.

Saw Bell Witch on their EU-tour yesterday.
They played Future Shadows Part 1: The Constellation Gate. One song, 83 minutes and it was perfect.
One of the few bands that really hit me hard each time. Two guys with just a bassguitar, drums and organ creating such a massive experience.
Can't wait for the next two parts of the Future Shadows trilogy. A total of over four hours of funeral doom. :metal
Dutch band Ggu:ll was a great opener with their more traditional doom.

Well, it's kind of easy for me because NOFX's final shows so in theory this is my last chance to see them, 3EB will be back and I even saw them just two summers ago. No big deal to miss them. That NOFX concert should be really good. They haven't announced the opening bands, but given the line ups for all their farewell shows, it should be really strong.

That sucks. CH were soo good a few months ago and at least for the US, that was a rare chance to see them (hopefully that changes)
Last Friday was the Judas Priest show in NJ with Sabaton opening. After all these years, I FINALLY got to see Judas Priest. I've never been a big fan of them so they were never "must see" but over time and after basically checking off every metal band that I wanted to see, this band still alluded me. This show, JP and Sabaton at Prudential Center, was actually supposed to happen in 2020. I had planned on it back then as being my first time seeing them. Of course it didn't happen. That show got postponed until 2021. Then Faulkner had the heart attack which cancelled the postponed show. They did end up rescheduling that tour but wiht Queensryche opening and I couldn't make the new date. I actually was in Vegas when they performed in 2022, but my gf denied us from going to see them :lol (it was fair game on her part, we had done what I wanted before and that night was her choice). Anyway, now in 2024 the show happened and I was able to be there!
Scooped up a good ticket deal the day of to get back to the buffet section of the arena. Turns out, I had an entire suite to myself :lol I got there early before the show started to make use of that included buffet. Slightly different food options than Avenged Sevenfold a few weeks ago, including a grilled cheese that was incredible. I ate wayyyy too much. I had like 6 chicken tenders, mac and cheese, a NY strip steak slice, some salmon, potatos, 4 hot dogs, like 4 cake pops, a bag of popcorn, a chocolate covered pretzel.... I think thats it. :corn
Sabaton came on at 7:30. Not surprised the arena was mostly empty for their start, but it wasn't as bad as expected. It seemed some people, like myself, were definitely there for them. I thought they were just OK that night. The sound was a bit muddy at times. They did get 50 minutes and 12 songs which is solid for an opener, but the 12 songs were the same ones they played last US tour. I felt li ke they should have played at least one different song. They did introduce the return of one of the guitarists who had been out of the band for the last 8 years. I thought they looked like they were having fun on stage, with a few jokes through the set. They tried many times to get the crowd to cheer along and it mostly didn't work out sadly. At one point Joakim ran across the stage and fell on his ass. Probably the highlight of the set :lol I think the biggest reason why I felt like they were just OK was that they didn't take advantage of being on an arena stage in the US. Their European arena shows are filled with pyro and just a general big stage show. Maybe they didnt want to out shine JP, or maybe they couldn't do the stage show because they were openers, but it felt like a huge wasted potential for the band to give Americans a taste of what they do elsewhere in the world. Generally, I'm very happy for them to be in this spot though. Just seemed like JP fans weren't into it and the band may not have fully maximied it. Maybe those two are correlated.
Judas Priest came on right around 9pm. Really good sound. Rob sounded incredible, especially for his age. I do think his age showed in his stage presence though. Often staring at the ground (or maybe he was reading a teleprompter?) and sometimes just meandering in the back of the stage. I've never seen them before so maybe that's just his thing, but while he sounded great, visually sometimes I felt like he was a bit "out there". I'm no JP purist so I know it's not the original guitarists, but I thought they both were good and it really didn't come to mind for me at all that it was no KK or Tipton. I do wish the setlist featured more from the new album. 3 songs seems a bit small considering the positive reaction to the album, but those 3 songs were awesome live. Sadly, like Sabaton experienced, the crowd just didn't seem to react much at all to JP. During all the sing a long parts where ROb would hold the mic out to the crowd, it was just a dud. I couldn't hear the crowd at all. Overall I enjoyed the show, but sadly didn't feel like JP won me over. I'd see them again, but under the right circumstances and not likely something to go out of my way to see.
Anyway, my stomach was in sooo much pain the train ride home. I spent like an hour on the toilet at 1am. I should NOT have tried to maximize that buffet like that.

Also, @Cram, I haven't seen The Slackers since 2011, but man what a show that was. I also saw Vic Ruggiero do a solo acoustic show in like '09 or '10. He absolutely killed it. I love that guys voice.

I saw the Slackers in Denver like 5 or so years ago. They told everyone to go to the bar across the street to hang out after the show, so I did, and Vic was handing out home made cookies from his mom (I may be misremembering who made them, but it came from NY I believe) that he had in a tin can. So much fun. I don't love the slackers, but I really like Vic. Gives me that New York Italian feel that I get from my extended family on my Dads side. I'm actually super excited to see the Pietasters. Don't think I've seen them before and I used to really like them. I played an old album over the weekend and really enjoyed it.

Saw Judas Priest w Sabaton Friday night at the PUKE CENTER in Newark, NJ. Probably my most hated arena in the metropolitan area for many reasons, but since JP are BANNED from MSG due to the "incident" at the Garden in '84 (for which i was front and center involved :mehlin) this was the closest show. First up was Sabaton who were simply awful! The music is terrible and performance not much better. Complete waste of 50 minutes! :censored JP came on at 9 and performed a tight, rousing set. I knew they were only playing 3 new songs from their incredible new album but other than the opener "Panic Attack" the other 2 new ones fell kind of flat on stage. The setlist was excellent until the excruciatingly overplayed encore songs. Now, I get that I've seen JP live over 20 times since 1978 and that they have younger fans who haven't seen them, but I'm just so sick of seeing so many same songs, tour after tour! Rant over! I thought Rob did a really good job and even hit some high notes (with the help of the sound desk) but at 74, he can still belt it out. Was also happy not to see Priest fall victim to the ridiculous flames and confetti that so many bands use these days! :loser: :facepalm: All in all, the Priest delivered once again :metal

Rob's been reading off the teleprompter for 20 years! And I agree with you. It DEFINITELY is noticeable and really takes any stage "persona" away! That being said, Rob was NEVER a "Dickinson type" to run around on stage. Even in his earlier years, Rob would just meander around the stage. He's still though, the "Metal God" to me! :metal :hefdaddy

A few minutes of google-fu does suggest he uses a teleprompter. Apparently Bruce ragged on him ten years ago for needing one to sing "breaking the law" ten times in a row. :lol I haven't seen them since 2011, and to be honest I'm so used to seeing him face down when he sings I'm not sure I'd even notice. And in truth they've never been a particularly high-energy band. Kenny Downing was probably the most energetic one, and like I said there was always some interplay with him and Tipton, but aside from those two there's never been a whole lot going on. That makes the mood pretty variable, and ice cold is always an option.
There's a reason I haven't seen them in 13 years.

A few thoughts on Babymetal with Nekrogoblikon and Deathklok...
Nekrogoblikon opened, they were fun and all, silly as fuck, and got the crowd rolling. Probably won't check them out further though, no really appeal in their music tbh.
Babymetal had the middle slot..the played for a bit over an hour, about a 10 song set. The Kami Band was tight as hell, which is the standard for them these days, just flawless. Moa and Momo were insanely energetic and relentlessly charismatic, they owned the crowd from beginning to end. Su however...goddamn can that girl sing. Range, control, inflections, and everything, she was perfection, and to pull that off with the intense dancing between vocal moments, so impressive. The crowd though, they're what really made the show. Sellout crowd of every walk of life, from kids to old farts like me, everything. Everyone was 100% invested into the show, and gave it their all. The crowd push at times was insane, I was seriously worried for a few young girls next to me who combined couldn't have weighed a buck, but they were fucking troopers and rolled with every punch the pit threw at them. So much fucking fun, nothing but respect for this band and how expertly they can work a crowd.
Deathklok was fun, never really dug their style, I got to hear their birthday song which was cool. I probably hung for about five songs then beat the rush out of the parking garage.

The two bands alternated the slot throughout the tour, I was OK with it since I could escape the rush out.
I think the only shows that had a crazier pit were Hanabie and Spiritbox, but they both played much smaller venues

Well, the ticket prices for Starset at the House of Blues in Anaheim isn't getting any lower on the secondary sites. Might as well get the ticket at face value for $46.50. Seems like a fine enough price. Their sets have been looking fine and going to around two hours, so I'm hoping for some solid performances and solid visuals that matches their electronic, spacey vibes. Probably will take a different approach in parking this time around. Will instead take a bus to the venue and then take an Uber/Lyft back home since I live so dang close to the venue. Will cost way less than the $25 I may pay for parking.

All right, I'm back from the Starset show. Man, oh man. This is a show of the year contender for me and I don't really see anything that I may anticipate for the rest of the year that can top this. First off, the first show I ever saw ever since I moved to the OC in 2017 was Halestorm with Starset opening at the Anaheim House of Blues in a spot near the soundboard at the back of the stage. They were ok as a main supporter, although I griped about certain sound issues from them, but people liked them and their space-themed aesthetics. So, this is a great feat for Starset that 7 years later, they are headlining this very same building, with no openers or co-headlining acts, and this place was packed. I had to wait through 3 or so hours in line. Had to wait through all of the VIP, those that bought fastlane passes, in order for me to be on the rail section behind the soundboard to get the most optimized view I can if I wasn't going to be close to the stage.
I was expecting some nice spacey visuals that goes with their electronic/pseudo djent/active rock radio friendly/cinematic rock sounds with some vocal growls thrown sparsely, but holy fudge, the visuals were way beyond what I expected. So, one of the things that they are doing on this particular tour was showing a custom movie in-between songs and playing the songs in their catalog that ties the movie together.
They played 18 songs and the experience lasted two hours. The band sounds great. You have two people on strings, a keyboardist, a guitarist, drums, and bass (all dressed in like body armor with space aesthetics) and you have Dustin Bates (the vocalist and composer behind the themes of the band). Sure, his vocals at times sounds electronic and had certain effects where his pitch of the voice will sound different, but for a band like this, this makes sense, but the stuff that he sang without those effects, he sounded fine, and he was personable and was very thrilled to sell out the House of Blues and loved the support the crowd in the LA/OC area brought and it was a good crowd. Helps that there were no openers or supporting acts that could overshadow them and people were engaged in the songs and the plot of the movie during the entire show.
One thing I did not expect to see at a concert was that in the front of the stage, they had these fans where if they were working, they were able to project some computerized text and visuals as shown below. Sad part was that about an hour into the show, one of the fans in the top right corner of the area stopped working and everyone in the soundboard area was trying to get in touch to see what the update was to get that fan fixed and couldn't get it done. It didn't really detract from the show at all and everyone had to roll with it although it cut off some visuals or words, but nothing too drastic. After 13 songs in, and 90 minutes of the show and movie being done, there was a 6 minute intermission and their stage crew removed those fans and the band came up in more casual black uniforms if it makes sense and finished the show with some of their big hitters and send the crowd singing happy by playing Take Me Home, Country Roads on tape to end the show.

All in all, I had good expectations that this was going to be a good show. I didn't expect this to be my favorite show of the year so far. I had a blast and I can see why the 3rd party ticket reselling sites could not list tickets to go under $50.00. $46.00 was so worth it and this place was packed.
I don't know what next month's show will be. I might see this band called the Exies at the Viper Room in LA in May. They had some nice 00s post-grunge songs that I liked, but the band broke up and Scott Stevens (the vocalist) ended up writing a lot of songs for radio rock bands I've recognized, but they are doing a one-off reunion show and tickets aren't expensive, so I may consider going to this one.

Man, I wish I could've attended one of the Starset shows. It was just not in my cards this time, but I will see them someday.
