My first headlining solo tour is set to take place this Fall! I’ll be taking my incredible band with Dave LaRue on bass and Mike Portnoy on drums, on an extensive tour of N.America! If that weren’t exciting enough, very special guests, Meanstreak will be opening all the shows!
The NYC 🗽 show on October 13th goes on sale right now with presale code “TERMINAL”. Get tickets here: https://bnds.us/srbden
Check back often - more dates to be announced soon! 🎸
-
I'm trying to figure out how or where to put the code in, but I can't find a spot. BTW, these tix are fucking expensive.
Oh, rereading the announcement, seems it's just NYC with the pre sale.

I reread the announcement and it seems only 10/13 show has a presale. I was looking at the Boston show.
-
Cool! Hope there are some west coast dates that work.
-
Thats a big Venue for a solo tour/show in NYC. Going to grab a pair of tickets though :metal
-
Are they touring with their wives? Or is it a Y&T tribute band?
No prospects for a show down South, and I'll be traveled out in October, so this is probably not happening for me.
-

Their wives.

Their wives.
Too bad.
-
Hopefully they'll make a stop in Charlotte... I'd like to see JP and MP onstage again and Terminal Velocity was a very good album for me.
I grabbed some tix for JR's solo show in Charlotte at the end of this month and I'm looking forward to it!
-

As far as I know, there have only ever been two Y&T tribute bands, and they both expired within about a year after I gave up vocal duties in the "main" one.

It's excellent. When I saw him the crowd was so small we were essentially just huddled up on his keyboard watching him play. His opening rampage was fantastic, and he did a solo rendition of Keys to the Imagination which was superb.

For those in the LA area, what are some venues you could expect this show to play in? I think this would do well in the El Rey like the Neal Morse Band tour this year, or maybe a larger room like the Belasco where Transatlantic played this year?
-
When MP teased some more things happening this year a while back, I thought they were trying to book a short LTE tour, but never thought it would be this instead!
-
Is Yael from Meanstreak, Marlene Portnoy? She is in the picture but I don't see her name on the Mesa Boogie FB ad.
-

Nice. Adding the NYC show to my concert list, but I'm not ready to commit to purchasing.
-
Had a look and the tix are indeed expensive if you want front row balcony - I think these are more expensive than what I paid for orchestra DT tickets. I guess it's the standing room!

Wasn’t Yael the drummer? Marlene is a guitar player.

Slightly related to this,
in the past few days a couple of videos with JP, both from Young Guitar, emerged on YT:
here he talks about his Majesty line, with a prototipe of the 8 strings, and other gears he's using in the studio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p84PfyzQKMU
DTHQ tour

I just bought my ticket for New York; I guess it's all perspective, but I didn't think that was that outrageous. I could have had second row front for $200 plus fees, but I ended up not ten rows back for under half that. Some seats were $40. Did I misunderstand something (I'm being sincere, not sarcastic)?

I only thought the up front $199 were a bit expensive. And that's before they raise the prices for "official platinum" sales. I paid much less for my front row DT ticket this year. The rest of the prices seem fairly standard.

Got my tickets for NYC show (first row balcony). Now hoping for a Keswick Theater show too where I'll be up front! This show should be a blast and I'm really looking forward to seeing the wives perform in Meanstreak too! :metal

I was just wondering, since it's JP's first solo headliner tour, I assume they'll be doing a 2 hour-ish set, so the question is, what is the set going to look like? Will they play both of JP's solo albums in full? Will they add a few of his unreleased tracks? Some random MP-era DT instrumentals?
-

YES!!! :metal

That would actually be awesome. But I'd guess a lot of his original music, maybe covers, and some jamming. Maybe they will also do an encore with the wives? I'd guess something like 30-45 minutes of the wives to open and a 90 minute JP set.

I'm debating going to charlotte show as well, the venue he is playing is really intimate. I guess I'll scoop up a ticket.

-
In no partical order, I think any (or all) of these piecess could be in the setlist:
Terminal Velocity
Happy Song
Gemini
Out of the Blue
Temple of Circadia
Glassy-eyed Zombie
Glassgow Kiss
Animate-Inanimate
Damage Control
Jaws of Life
Lost without you
Tunnel Vision
Plus whatever else they decide to do. And yeah I think having a few songs with the wives would be fun as well. Maybe similar to G3 style of show, have everyone come out at the end for some covers.

Yeah, it’d be fun to beat the crowd out of the venue.

TAC is all kinds of fun. You just have to get him started ala "shopping carts and the men who love them".

THAT is awesome! I hope that our show is intimate like that and that he plays Keys to the Imagination as that's my favorite from the new LTE. Looking forward to seeing him rip on the Strandberg as well...

Just got my tickets for the NYC show. I’m so pumped.

Would not surprise me.

I posted a pic and a very short post in my Queen discography. My wife LOVED the show in Annapolis last night!!!
btw, just found out that my friend Nicholas (who's cohosted three of four preshows with me) got the OK from Victoria (nope, I'm not making the names up ;)) to host a preshow for the October concert in DC. :tup The same venue they played a few nights after their 'Fourth Wall' Boston concert.
Can't wait to see Portnoy perform again. And I can finally hand Nick his Hell's Kitchen Hot Sauce....

Hey Count !
Where are your seats at the NY show ? I saw plenty available up front but I’ve been spending so much on concerts lately didn’t want to drop 199 +for one of em … I grabbed a 69 dollar seat in row Q and hopefully I’ll sneak up a bit … I’m flying up from Florida for it …

Orchestra Row J.
-
Cool ! I’ll see if anything a little closer comes available in the same price range , may trade up … if not I’ll keep my seat in Q and hopefully sneak up a bit during or after Meanstreak …
Should be a great show !
-
I have tickets for both NY and Boston; I'm pretty pumped to see this. But a little bird told me there are more shows coming (at least one, in New England, let's be fair and I don't want to tease anyone about a full tour). I'd like to see him in THAT venue, so I might actually be seeing THREE of these shows.
-
Wasn't it public information that these were just the start of a full tour?
-
Wasn't it public information that these were just the start of a full tour?
Yep
-
They did say more shows to follow. Just didn’t want to take a chance that they would be coming to South Florida, so I grabbed a NY ticket and many JetBlue points gets me there and back ! And if they do, I’ll go to the local show too .
-
Yeah depending where the other shows would be, I'll probably catch 2. I got my ticket for NYC already. If there is one around a 2 hour drive, I'll probably go.

I can guarantee you there will be. :)
I'd like to catch up and have a beer in NY if your schedule allows.

I'm down for the 2022 DT CT crew to reunite in NY. I didn't buy a NY ticket yet, but put it on my calendar.
-
I continue to stump for a rhythm guitarist for the Terminal Velocity tour, as that album has some notable rhythmic layering that deserves the live treatment. That guitarist should rightly be our very own DT89, Evan Bradley!!! Evan would really add a necessary dimension and capture the verve and flavor of the original recordings. Can we start a movement for this???
-
Anyone need single orchestra ticket for NY show .
Face value + fees , $69.50 + TM fees and taxes =$85.75, exactly what I paid for it, and I’ll transfer it to you…
I had purchased this ticket, and my wife surprised me by getting me a ticket …only need one!
Row Q ..
PM me …
Rich

I was thinking the same thing about a rhythm/second guitarist, as involved as the guitar parts are on those albums. But I was thinking it should be Rena. Keep it in the family since she'll already be there anyway. :)

Come to Ohio John!
-
Definitely hitting the CT show!
-
Ticket purchased! I’m so psyched to see these guys play, I’m wishing away the rest of the summer now. Seems to be selling pretty well, too.

Any word on when more dates will be announced?
What else have you been hiding??
😄

I'm kind of confused why they wouldn't be officially announcing dates/locations when the locations have the tickets on sale.
Check in on ~500 person capacity venues in your area, you may stumble on dates the way I did in CT. Again, selling well without an official announcement. The venue did a nice cross promotion w Jordan's solo tour stop last night.

That is a FANTASTIC place to see a show, too. I see about 15 shows a year there (sometimes more, sometimes less). I met Jon Anderson there, and one time, at band camp, after his show with GE Smith, Billy Squier just walked out into the lobby and started chatting with fans. My friend and I actually had like a 10 minute conversation with him. Really nice guy. I'll be there; I have second row, center, in the orchestra. Pretty psyched.

this will be my first show there, I couldn't make it to see Jordan yesterday and was kind of bummed. The venue looks beautiful. I have my usual seat next to the sound board. I love chatting w sound techs on their down time, always a ton of fun stories.
also - lol 'at band camp' - can hear her voice as I read it :lol

B-107 or the beer line if you want to say hello.
-
I'm in! hoping to get there plenty early, looks like about 1hr+ commute, I'll definitely be in touch to confirm time/place
-
Sure would be nice to get the rest of those tour dates.
-
I know. I keep checking here to see if they've been announced to no avail.
-
It's kind of weird the CT show has been on sale with no announcement about it. No where it is mentioned if not for this thread.

A date has been added for Toronto November 17.
Anyone know where to sing up for the presale?
It says: Embrace presents/Live Nation presale.
-
Actually, ticketmaster has a bunch of dates now
Here ya go:
https://bnds.us/srbden
-
All of these are on JPs site now too, really looking forward to this!
-
I know it’s not the same in every city, but in Dallas, he’s playing the same venue that Dream Theater has been playing the last couple of tours. It was pretty packed for DT, but I wonder if the promoter thinks he’ll draw the same amount (or pretty close) as DT does in our area. I hope so, I’m looking forward to it.
Shit, it looks like he’s charging as much as for a DT show also!
-
Shocked there's a NJ date and NYC date. Looks like I'm happy I didn't buy that NYC ticket as I'll go to the much closer Red Bank show now.
-
Just saw the dates and the only shows that are close to me are the week I have to go to New York for work.
-
Hi…new here…feel bad this is my first post. I have a ticket for the NYC Petrucci show and would rather go to the NJ show. Would anyone be interested in buying the NY ticket? It’s in the balcony Row B. Thanks.
-
Hmm, looks like the closest show to me that I'd be willing to travel for is probably Charleston SC.
Maybe I can talk the wife into a weekend excursion.
-
Having two Greater LA shows in one leg can be really risky. Both may not sell out. Never been to the Ace Hotel, but every time I see prices on shows in that venue, it's always a price I'm not willing to pay. Anaheim House of Blues is the much more better option if I were to go. It's all GA and no seats.
-
Two close Florida shows and they're on a Saturday/Sunday, pretty much perfect :hat
-
Wow, the tour starts at The Strand in Providence. The Awake tour started there as well, with Berklee the second show of that tour. I'd rather see him at The Strand, but Boston on a Friday works better than Providence on a Wednesday.
-
Shocked there's a NJ date and NYC date. Looks like I'm happy I didn't buy that NYC ticket as I'll go to the much closer Red Bank show now.
So, because of the staggered announcements and on-sale dates, I ended up with tickets to New York, Boston, and Connecticut. I wouldn't ordinarily go to all three, but the NY show is a week later, so I may do all three for the social aspect of it.

If it wasn't that the NJ and NY show were back to back, I would consider going to both, but I am eyeing the CT show as another option.

I know I offered the "let's meet up" but I'm not really thinking I'm going to go to the NYC show now. I'm not that into JP's solo music to want to see the show twice. Red Bank will be significantly easier and cheaper for me. I'm still a bit shocked they added the NJ show, I did not expect that with the NYC show announcement.

No, that's cool; I get it. It's not you're never going to NYC for a show again.

Now, we wait...

APPLAUSE is the generic LiveNation password for presales this week, so try that. It just worked for me for Anaheim (which is being sold as a seated show by the way, the first time I've seen that at that venue).

Nope! :lol I'm on the venues mailing list and it wasn't on there either, or any of their socials. Livenation just labels it as a "Member presale" too.

APPLAUSE is the generic LiveNation password for presales this week, so try that. It just worked for me for Anaheim (which is being sold as a seated show by the way, the first time I've seen that at that venue).
I got front row for this show! yay!!
Me too! Row A for Anaheim and Row B for Los Angeles.

Yep, confirmed. APPLAUSE worked for that one. Yeah, that is weird that there are seats at the Anaheim HOB. It looks like the configuration does not look like it's using the full 2,000 people capacity (which would be all standing GA). That's a bit of a bummer. I'll check back at a later time then.

I think its great they are doing a seated show at the Anaheim HOB. I usually have to pay for the VIP balcony seats upgrade there. General admission is elbow to elbow and the only way to get up front is to wait at the venue all day. No thanks.
-
row D in LA!
A little surprised about seats for HOB, but similarly this year the El Rey had seats for The Neal Morse Band and The Belasco had seats for Transatlantic, two venues that are usually standing GA. That's why I thought either of those venues could be the LA stop for this run, especially since they're a bit smaller when you're risking LA and the Anaheim show eating into each others' sales, but the Ace Hotel is supposed to be a nice venue so hopefully it sells well enough
-
The NJ show is open for sale and there's a bunch of front row center tickets available.... but it's so expensive. Amazing how I paid a good amount less for the same seat for DT this year at the same venue.
-
Yeah the ticket prices for this show are ridiculous.
-
But there at least are $29 last row tickets. Which I will likely get. I go to too many concerts to splurge this much on a single one that, if I'm being honest, isn't really my favorite music. I LOVE JP though so that's why I'm even considering it. Maybe if JP gave me the guitar pic at that DT show instead of the guy next to me I'd cough up the money :lol
-
They're skipping the Pacific Northwest so it looks like I won't be going. I could take a road trip to Sanfrancisco but not with these gas prices..

And the....Denver, Utah, etc. area... what is that...almost west? Directly from San Francisco to Minneapolis.

I'm not going to lie... I'm not really going for the music. His solo albums are very good, but they aren't something I listen to every day. I'm going for the spectacle. John, Mike, the wives... I feel like this could be something out of the ordinary.

MP is really the draw for me.

I feel like he's going to drum the fuck out of this show. In front of his friend, his wife, etc. I can see him wanting to impress, in a good way.

Yeesh.
I get that prices are going up for everything but this may just be pushing the limit of how much I'll pay.

Going solo to the show in Chicago from Ohio. Can't wait to see MP and JP play together again after all of these years.

Exactly this; for example I much prefer Michael Romeo's solo albums but this JP should be awesome.

My gf who doesn't really know any DT or who JP/MP are (other than me occasionally talking about them) told me over the weekend she is really intrigued by the whole wives band opening and just would love to see instrumental music (which kind of shocked me). So I just got us two tickets for Red Bank in the cheap seats which came out to $82 after fees. I've sat in these seats many times before so I know what I'm getting and I have no complaints about those prices for these seats. There's still front row tickets available and this date looks like it's not going to sell well at all.

Dang. Cheapest seats in CT are $60 before fees.
-
Yeah, the NYC cheap seats were more expensive too. For whatever reason, the Red Bank venue always seems to have super cheap seats in the back, even for DT. It's not even a big venue, 1k capacity.
-
Maybe this is another perk of Florida living, cheaper concert tickets. It was maybe a little over $200 total to be close (10th row center and 2nd row side) for both Clearwater and Orlando.

I really think you should come out here to Cali for the show in SF. In fact, I can't think of a good reason you shouldn't.
I've been wondering if they'll do an encore kind of like the G3 jam where they bring everybody out onstage together and play. I think that would be cool.
-
I'll be at the Keswick. I don't expect this to sell very well so I have some time to figure out where I want to sit.
-
Denver just added. Nov 10.
-
A decent amount of the venue for the CT show has already sold.

I'm so psyched for this one, seeing JP and MP rip it up again live - going to be awesome!!

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing RP rip it up.

My gf who has no idea who any of these people are (other than me talking about them) really wants to go because I mentioned the wives bands are opening. I think that's really cool personally. It's like a family event. I really hope they do something together for the encore.
-
I really hope they do something together for the encore.
My guess is that they will, both for the reasons you mention, and because JP has done G3 several times now and kind of has that guitar jam thing in his DNA. But I don't have any inside info.--just a guess.
-
Albuquerque, Sacramento and Denver dates just announced
I just saw this on Facebook. I did not expect them to come here at all. I am excited and will buy tickets when they go on sale tomorrow. Hopefully I can get front row.
Time to jam out Happy Song, because that is how I feel right now and hope they play this one.
-
Now if they could just add one more date in Seattle.
-
Just scored me Front Row, Center tickets. No way I was gonna pass this up. The first and last time I was at this venue was for Dweezil Zappa playing Hot Rats in it's entirety. It's a great venue for JP to play.
Now to wait a long 3 months.
-

It might be interesting because it’s Rena, but I generally find those end of show guitar jam things kind of cringey.
-
I've never been big into the G3 jams at the end honestly. The last few times I've seen G3 I left during the jams. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all.
-
I just looked into tickets for my local show, which is at an independent venue that normally has high ticket prices. Yep. I mean, we're talking floor seats are more expensive than Dream Theater. Like 180 bucks. :lol
Upper level are like 70 bucks before fees and charges. I think they were like 83 total. Sorry, cool tour, but as much as I'd love to see JP, and this looks like a fun tour, that's outrageous. I had hoped the lower level was like 75 bucks a seat, and upper level was 50-60. They (assuming the venue's promoter) decided to gouge. Not sure what other ticket prices are for different cities, but there's no way I am paying that.
And yet...so many people bought tickets for this, at that venue anyway. So I guess folks just want to see it pretty badly. My guess is, with the hope that with MP and JP together, they'll play a DT song...
Anyway, it sucks. The wife and I wanted to go, but not at those prices. That's just silly (for us).

Those prices seem pretty normal for this tour. My local venue did have super cheap last row seats that I grabbed, but not sure anyone else was able to see $30 (before fees) tickets for this tour. I also think it's outrageous. My local show, NJ, still has front row seats available and maybe at best is 1/4 sold overall. I wouldn't be surprised if they close off the balcony and move everyone to the floor if it doesn't sell better come day of show. This is a 1k capacity venue, so it's not big to begin with and interest seems low locally. Granted, if they announced this when they did the NYC show, I wonder how that would have changed things. Red Bank is a 80 minute train ride from NYC.

I noticed JP is managed by the same management as DT (which makes total sense). Do you think that has something to do with it? I'm sure the tour will do pretty well, but it seems a bit ambitious to be booking similar venues as DT vs a solo tour, even with MP involved.
-
I have no idea.
All I know is, the particular venue they chose to book with in my city is the same one that Sons of Apollo played on their second album. I skipped that too, because the ticket prices for that were outrageous as well, by comparison.
I am not in the business, but from my understanding, the promoter executes the contract with the band, and it's the promoter who sets the ticket prices to cover what they paid the band and the use of the venue. I'm guessing, given that this is an independent venue (non-Live Nation) they just jack up the ticket prices because their costs aren't subsidized by a bigger conglomerate. But either way, it sucks for fans. I mean, I'm blown away that the lower section is almost complete done.
This is the cheapest lower level seat still available:

I mean...come on. But, like I said, the event is selling well, so they are getting what they (the promoter) wants. But I won't pay for that. I've seen Dream Theater 13 times, and G3 with Petrucci twice. Sucks, because I'd gladly go again, but not at that price point for a seat on the lower level. Not for JP solo tour with his wife's band opening. Come on. (And I do want to see it, just at at that price.)
-
My god I hope this tour gets some EU dates. I'm of the age that I just missed seeing MP live with DT (my first ever gig was the first EU tour with MM) and to see him play with John would be something of a dream come true because I'd just assumed it would never ever happen
-
More tour dates added in Albany and Buffalo! 🎸🤘
Get tickets for the JP solo tour here: https://bnds.us/srbden

I really hope JP brings on a rhythm player because much of Terminal Velocity will be criminally underserved without the live accompaniment and layering of a second guitarist. Rena would be great, DT89 would be awesome. Doubt it will happen, but I still wish to highlight the importance nonetheless.

Enjoy Tim! I'm just still blown away it is so expensive here.

It's expensive here. And it's extremely well sold.
I bought the $35 tickets way the hell up in the back of the balcony. :lol
I wonder how much having MP there is contributing to the sales? I know that I probably wouldn't be going had it not been for MP.

The Red Bank show still looks mostly unsold

Got my tickets for Sherbrooke in November. I will be happy to see Portnoy again.

I haven't been to the Vogel, but that would be fine for me. Would make for a much more intimate show.

Haven't had a chance to watch it yet myself, but here's a new interview with JP talking about his solo tour:

I'm glad that JP told his agent to book the crap out of it. :lol
He also confirmed that Rena is the Nebula Queen in the Temple of Circadia video.

Here's another interview with JP. He's really cool in this.

Actually, moving this horribly selling show to my backyard in Woodbridge, NJ might make more sense! ;) ;) ;) I'm really shocked at the lack of interest from local DT fans!

Seems like 10% tickets sold :o
-
I've gone through like half of the dates and that one seems definitely the worst in terms of % sold, while the others seems to follow all the same pattern.
Maybe there're some others concerts in the same area that week that target the same audience? Maybe the local promoter is not investing that much in communcation? Maybe the cost is too high for that area?
It's not automatic that this concert is, anytime & everywhere, people's best option.

But let's look at the timeline (I may have some of the details wrong, i.e., the order they went on sale, but the idea is right): The first date on sale was Boston. Then NY, but there were only three dates announced at that time. Then there was word of more shows, including CT. For me, for example, I had tickets to THREE shows before I even HEARD of a NJ show. Had there been ONE ANNOUNCEMENT of the tour, I think you might have seen a different reaction from the fans.
-
Yeah I think announcing the NYC show first likely had an impact on NJ sales.
-
I read an article the other day that it is difficult for most artists to make money on touring right now. Even a lot of bigger artists are struggling to sell tickets even close to the max for the venues where they are booked. Seems like everyone is touring now, and with ticket prices higher across the board, fans simply cannot afford to go to every show they'd like.
-
A number of the Northeast shows are selling pretty well though. Seems the NJ and PA shows are struggling.
I'm actually getting kind of psyched for this. I've been listening to Terminal Velocity, and it's an amazing album.
-
I have to admit that I was relieved when no STL date was announced, because a longtime friend who is also a big DT fan would have bugged me to go and I had zero interest. Petrucci is the man, but I learned years ago that instrumental guitar wankfests are not something I enjoy live.
-

I'd likely be skipping it had it not been for MP being there. I loved MP, and I have had ZERO interest in anything he's done since leaving DT. I couldn't pass this up. It's a Friday night...at Berklee!
I saw DT at Berklee on the 2nd night of the Awake tour.

I'm expecting about 1:00 - 1:30 for his set time, giving Meanstreak a 30 min. set.

JP said about 1 1/2 hours for his show.
I think this is new.

I would have gone to Red Bank is it was announced right off the bat but got NYC instead. I'd much rather go to NJ than the big crappy city.

Any news on the setlist yet? What if they throw in a snippet of DT?
-
Nothing yet. I was on youtube to see if anyone uploaded anything from the show.
-
Setlistfm has nothing yet...
-
Yeah, just checked.
I would've loved to have been there. Seen DT at The Strand 3 times back in the 90's including the first show of the Awake tour.
I've been listening to Terminal Velocity a lot over the last couple of weeks, and this is a GREAT album. MP is fantastic on it.
-
I don't know if I want to look at the setlist yet.
The Way Things Fall would be a nice way to end set though. I would consider that to be a very nice epic instrumental song.
-
Yeah, well, I know I definitely do since he8s coming nowhere close enough to even fly out to. I’m kinda wondering where Glasgow Kiss is. I reckon Way Things Fall would be a great encore with Glasgow Kiss closing main set. Surely he’d be opening with Terminal Velocity though, right?

I asked a DT Facebook group member who attended the show what the setlist was and he couldn't remember the song order, but gave me a list of what they played from each of his albums. I've listed them here in very small font to avoid spoiling people :tup
From Suspended Animation:
Jaws of Life
Glasgow Kiss
Tunnel Vision
Damage Control
And from Terminal Velocity:
Terminal Velocity
The Oddfather
Happy Song
Gemini
Out of the Blue
Snake in my Boot

He said in one of his recent interviews they would only be playing stuff from both of his solo albums. I like it that way, honestly

I wasn't expecting that at all. That to me is something unique to G3 and John did promise Rena that if he ever did a solo tour Meanstreak can open.
I prefer they didn't either becuase that means more time for more JP solo songs. He has enough to fill about 2 hours worth of a live show, the "set-list" playlist I made on Spotify comes to about 1:28:00, and I left out songs from both albums. Guarantee he will play one or all of the songs I left out.

No Raw Dog? Seems like a missed opportunity. ::)

Still love watching MP play. Such a great performer.
-
Any cool merch at the show ?? I’m going to the NYC show… thanks !
-
Shirts are cool (album cover). Picks. Bourbon. The venue is doing a silent auction of a guitar signed by John, Mike and Dave, and a LNF LP signed by John and Jordan. It’s the red cover (Budokan?)
Meanstreak has some cool stuff too. All reasonable prices from what I’ve seen lately.
-
LNF?
-
LNF?
Lost Not Forgotten.
-
Bill, tour dates, or band names (Portnoy, Larue) on the back of the shirts?
-
Both. Names up top, including Meanstreak, and dates below. They’re pretty cool.

Great setlist, only disappointing omission for me is Glassy Eyed Zombies, but otherwise great. I'm doubtful, but I really hope they manage to come over to the UK/Europe at some point

Let's all hope for that!! If JP can make it to Europe, it means there's a slight chance they come to South America :corn

Watching JP/MP perform together again was worth the price of admission alone. The setlist was awesome, as was the venue in Ridgefield, CT. Meanstreak was a pleasant surprise, and Ernie Ball is missing an opportunity if they don't make a RP signature - the 'Her Majesty', perhaps. My goodness can she play.
Also great to finally meet a board member - great to connect, Bill - looking forward to more shows in the future!

I can confirm all of that as well (sorry, Jeff, my phone died just as the lights came up; but it was fantastic to meet you!). I liked Meanstreak more than I thought I would, even if it's not what I expected to see. No judgement here, but there were more women on stage with Meanstreak than there were in the entire audience. ;)

Loved watching Mike and John together; I'm not really an emotional guy in that way, and I'm not one of those that thinks "they should just bury the hatchet!" - life's too complicated for that fairy tale stuff - but it WAS really special to watch them communicate so effortlessly on stage. They were clearly having fun, and while it was obvious that Mike was there to support John - it's the first show I've seen with Mike where he wasn't mic'd up and he didn't say one word to the audience that I recall - the synergy was clear, and John was a lot more animated than he seemed when I saw him with Dream Theater a couple months ago.
I wasn't terribly familiar with all the material - I've heard both albums multiple times, but I struggle sometimes identifying instrumental music - but without giving spoilers, there was one song, from Suspended Animation, that literally took my breath away. I knew these guys were at the top of their profession, but there's something about seeing them perform at that level from 25 feet away that is special.

Awesome Bill, now compare that pic to Tim's in his concert thread :lol Cool pics and sounds like fun. My gf and I will experience it in less than a week. Hopefully I will have some quality video to share with everyone.

Haha! I would have liked to have met the singer. She was good, and seemed the most - along with Rena - into the show.

If anyone is on the fence about this tour.... FUCKING GO!!!!
Holy shit, JP teared it up. :hefdaddy
It was so great to see MP. He's my favorite drummer, and he's done nothing that has interested me in the slightest since leaving DT. His playing on Terminal Velocity is to me, surprising excellent. He still has his chops, and then some.
Dave Larue's solo spot in Gemini was ridiculous.
Is it me or does Dave Larue look like a young Don Imus??
-
Glad to hear the shows have been amazing so far.
I wasn't going to pass up the chance to see him with MP and with Dave LaRue. Meanstreak is just the cherry on top for me, just because I think it'd be neat to see and hear the wives band. I ended up getting first row, close to dead center.
It's gonna be a long month... :lol

I'm sure I've told stadler and a few others this story before, maybe even typed it out here before, but I had a funny experience seeing Rena play with Judas Priestess a few years ago. Metal Allegiance were playing a Halloween show at Brooklyn Bowl, doing one of the Sabbath albums in full + other songs. I got to the venue hours early because Metal Allegiance sold a VIP experience for that show that included bowling with the band. I don't often go for the VIP deals, but how could I turn down bowling a few frames with MP. So I'm at the venue way early and I see MP standing around looking at the stage and he's talking to one John Petrucci. What's more, John is standing there holding a guitar case. Well I immediately started freaking out and texting my friends about how I think JP is going to be on stage jamming with MP that night and I'm hype for that. Turns out Judas Priestess was the opening band and John was just playing roadie for his wife :lol I was really impressed with both Rena and the band though.
-
That’s funny.
Bowling with MP. That’s even funnier.

If you've got Instagram (and if his stories are still up), there's a great bunch of clips of Portnoy walking around Berklee and then having a chat with JP about their memories of it at the end.
Also on YouTube currently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZjgd3RLe6s

Cool. Thank you. I'm going to watch that now. I was wondering how they spent their day there.
John mentioned that Dave Larue is also a Berklee alum "that graduated". (John's words)
He also said that Berklee was one of his favorite places in the world.
EDIT: What a great video!!

:lol
-
They might be, there's a few samples I've noticed (like the synth in Temple of Circadia) that they will need to stay in sync to, unless someone is triggering them manually
-
JUat because there are samples doesn't mean there's a click, though. There was a sound guy out front of house (nice guy; he let me take a picture of the setlist for Meanstreak and chatted with me a bit between acts) and there is a sound guy - Jimmy T - stage left. Those sounds can be triggered spontaneously if need be. Having seen the show twice, including from the second row (and then, for the encore, from the front row) I'd say 98% of that show is played by the three humans on stage.
-
Hey there; I have a ticket for NY, row J, and I can't make it down, if anyone is interested.
-
There's nothing wrong with playing with to a click btw :)
-
Oh damn, the Red Bank show has front row seats for $65 before fees. Huge change from the ~200 it was when they went on sale. I guess the promoters are just coming down to earth that this show is not selling well.

The handful of vids I’ve seen online I’m less than impressed with MP’s efforts honestly. I’ve seen three vids where he’s forgotten his parts basically and the dynamic drumming he laid down in the studio is pretty tame in the live show…..especially when paying attention the the kick/bass drumming parts. Pretty lazy renditions of the studio parts.
I get it…..it’s a ton to learn and he’s aging but I guess I expected more enthusiasm being that he was playing with JP again.

There is NOTHING BETTER musically than watching the chemistry and sheer brilliance from MP & JP (oh yeah, LaRue isn't bad either ;))
Will be back in my seat in NYC tomorrow and then again on Friday at The Keswick Theater. I will have to donate my ears to science after that! :tup

Yeah that is good to hear! And what I would expect. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s missed the cues in a couple of these early shows and his kick drum/bass work isn’t all that impressive
-
I'm going to NYC tonight. How loud is the show? Is it typical DT bloody loud or a bit lower? I'm hoping for lower. :)
-
Glad to hear you enjoyed the show! I will be at the Keswick on Friday. I be probably seen MP 35 times in all his various bands but I'm really looking forward to seeing him perform again with JP. Dave is great too and I'm also looking forward to seeing Meanstreak. Should be a fun evening of entertainment!
-
Couple things from a dude that saw the show twice, once from up front - second row - and once from back - behind the sound board.
- It's pretty loud. Not "AC/DC, I need to see a doctor" loud, but loud.
- You know, I'm not note-for-note familiar with the material, so there's that, but frankly, I didn't miss a beat. They are having fun, the enthusiasm is contagious, and it's John's show. I know there are two sides to this: it's about the music, but I got a VERY clear sense from both shows that Mike is consciously making sure that this is JOHN'S night and he's doing nothing to upstage him. No microphone, no speeches... there's a little playing with the sticks (he does a "trick") because it's Mike, and there's some mugging from the behind the kit, but it's pretty subdued for "Mike Portnoy". I only noticed one moment in both shows where there was a hiccup and like the pros they are, they moved past it pretty quickly.
- Don't sleep on Meanstreak. It can't be taken too seriously - a 50-, maybe 60-year-old woman screaming about Nostradamus can't be - but it's fun, Judas-Priest-influenced music, and a great way to start the show. Rena is clearly the star, though they're all good, and I thought both the drummer and the singer had their moments of entertaining (I caught the drummer grooving to Temple of Circadia at stage left during the Berkeley show).
I think we take this for what it is: a family reunion, and a chance for John to step out of the shadow of Dream Theater for a night (well, 35 of them). I thoroughly enjoyed it, and were it not for family commitments I'd be in NYC this evening as well.

I can second this - I brought my earplugs since the past few DT shows have been ridiculously loud. The show I saw on this tour wasn't quite 'DT' loud but I was happy to have the ear plugs and no ringing in my ears the next day(s).

Conversely, it's the first show at Ridgefield - where Awaken and I saw the show - where I went to the concession stand to see if they had earplugs (and that includes a show by Yngwie).
-
My ears are MOST DEFINITELY still ringing. Going to have to double up on cotton tonight (and maybe sit out Meanstreak. They were actually pretty damn good but the sound was horrible for them and super loud).

the past few DT shows have been ridiculously loud.
Yeah....and quite honestly.....it's just JP. He drowns out everyone else. He needs to be cranked down a hair for sure to allow the full mix of the band to be appreciated. Saw them for this last tour and it was probably my least favorite DT show because of how badly it was mixed....just too loud....couldn't appreciate the entire band at times.
-
My gf and I were at the Red Bank show last night.
It was loud for sure. My gf said she is getting ear plugs after that show. Hard to say if it's louder than DT, but it may not be much of a difference to bother debating.
Sadly the place was empty, which was expected, although I think they sold some more tickets between when I last checked and the show started.
Meanstreak were not my thing. I hadn't heard a single song before, but I don't think I enjoyed a single song I heard. Having said that, I'm not entirely sure that's the bigger point of them performing (I'm sure the band would like people to enjoy their music) but obviously the wives and reunion of the band is kind of their thing. They were legit thrash metal, but I'd say the songs sounded like they needed a lot of work. As in, like they were more of a garabe band trying to find their way to writing good music. There's good passages here and there, some sick riffing, and Rena can shred, but the songs as a whole just didn't come off well to me. They were definitely live too, the live sound was good. Very raw and not perfect by any means, but that's exactly what I like. I'd say the worst part was the singer screaming WOOO after every single song. Kind of got old. They did mention the DT wives as well. Here's their opening song: Meanstreak - Giant Speaks LIVE @ Count Basie Theater Red Bank NJ 10/12/2022 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svRQRrMMggk)
I must sadly admit though, I'm not really into JP's solo music. His performance and guitar playing ability is no doubt through the roof, but what I feared I would feel became reality. I just can't enjoy it after 15 minutes or so. But let me say, this was always, for me, about seeing JP and MP play together. That's definitely a chemistry that I've missed. I was in the back, so I couldn't see JP's facial expressions too well, but he kept saying how happy he was. There was lots of eye contact between the two while playing. I wonder if they both truly were legit happy playing together again. I assume so. Not trying to start a debate here, but I don't recall ever hearing JP talk about being so happy playing with anyone else. I can definitely say I got my money's worth seeing those two again.
As for MP's playing. I've only listened to Terminal Velocity once or twice in full. I definitely don't know the songs well enough to say if MP's was not performing the songs correctly or up to par with the album. What I will say was that he was awesome, as usual. He didn't have a drum solo, but there were definitely climax drum moments in a lot of the songs where he shined. As I already stated, seeing him (and JP) were the main reasons to attend and both of their performances were fantastic. I've got nothing negative to say about MP here.
I should also add that Dave sounded good and got quite a few bass solo highlights throughout the night. While it may have been JP's show, the other two guys got their moments in the sun too. I do wish maybe MP got a drum solo spot though, and that's not something I often say as I usually don't like drum solos. But for MP, I thought it might have been cool to give him a couple minutes. Eithey way, the show started around 9:15 and ended at 10:50 so it was actually slightly over 90 minutes but there was a break for the encore. Also JP talked a bit between the songs. Other than talking about being happy (multiple times), he obviously brought up playing with MP for the first time in 12 years. Mentioned the Italian theme of the night (was this at the other shows?) being in NJ so the Sopranos theme song played before he come out and the lights were of the italian flag color on the stage. He mentioned this after playing the Oddfather of course.
Highlight song for me (and my gf as well, she was quite vocal about this) was Out of the Blue. It was really the one change of pace song and IMO much needed for me to get a break from all the heavy shredding. When I get home tonight I'll make my full video of the night, maybe 50 minutes of video recorded. But for now, here's two songs:

Agreed to all of this.
There was no overt mention of the "Italian" aspect, but the music between Meanstreak and John was all mellow. One song was Dean Martin, and I made a joke to the guy next to me that I feel like I'm at an Italian restaurant and I Shazam'd the song playing and it came back "Italian Restaurant Music Of Italy". :) :) The Sopranos theme song was the lead-in to the show for both shows I saw.

Leaving for show now. Will get a bite to eat and then just hang in the theater while Meanstreak is on. My ears need a bit of a break. Will watch them again tomorrow at Keswick . I'm also surprised at the lack of interest in JP's solo material. I think BOTH albums are fantastic. In fact I would much rather see this show and watch these 3 perform than a current DT show at this point. But, that's just me. ;)

Yeah, they had the italian music between bands too. He almost made it seem like it was to do with playing in NJ/NY (he mentioned both states and being "home") but that Sopranos intro ended specifically with a change into the opening so I didn't think that was a one (or two) type of thing. I guess it's part of his tour package but worded it in a way to make note being in NJ I guess. I enjoyed it, I mean with that last name you might as well embrace your heritage. I know all about that if you knew my last name :lol He did a few "ayyyy Ohhhh" as well when doing that talk, sadly I didn't record it but I loved it. In fact I loved every time he talked.

Killer show tonight in NYC !
Just seeing the camaraderie between John and Mike warms my heart !! MP only threw out 2 sticks and one was for the little boy next to me so I didn’t get one , but did get a pick from JP . Jordan was at the show so I told him I saw his show in Ft Lauderdale and spotted him at the P Tree show at Radio City Last month and that I flew up from Florida again to see tonight’s show , have to support my DT BOYS ! He said to have a safe trip home , so it’s back to Florida for me on Saturday with the sweet sound of JPs guitars in my memory… OH, and they were selling JP’s beard oil at the merch stand !!

Guess I was sitting a few seats to your left. The kid that got the stick was a few seats to my right!
Great show for sure, it was nice seeing JP and MP together on stage. LaRue was great as well.

Are you going to be at the Clearwater and/or Orlando shows next weekend?
-
Nah , normally I would …What happened was when JP announced the tour , I jumped on tix for the NY show figuring there would be limited shows. Then they announced more shows and Orlando was on the list .. of course my wife said I was just impatient but I also flew up last month to NY for the P Tree show …

So, while I'm in Arlington for a different event, I've spontaneously decided to go to the DC show tomorrow night with a friend, so that'll be exciting!
Edit - can anyone tell me the prices for merch? I want to get a shirt or two, and need to prepare mentally for the amount I need to spend. Also, what else did they have? I'm guessing CDs and vinyl as well. And do the shirts come in 2xl or 3xl?
-Marc.

Tshirts, signed vinyl, picks, beard oil and beany, some Meanstreak merch as well.

Saw the $100 signed vinyl but passed on it. Snagged a $40 shirt and now my friend and I are waiting for the show to start! Since it was so last minute, I'm up in the balcony but it's not too bad. It's my first time in the Lincoln Theater and it seems like a nice venue! Can't wait for the show to begin!
-Marc.
-
The show was great! A lot of fun energy and the sound was immense! I'm really glad I went! It was my first time ever seeing Portnoy AND Petrucci, and they were together! Dave was fantastic as well! Everyone did a spectacular job and it was totally worth going! Meanstreak were great as well, not my typical cup of tea but they killed it!
If you can make it to a show near you, definitely do it!
-Marc.
-
Yeah, DC was great!!!! :tup :tup :tup
I truly like/love the 'calmness' that MM has brought to DT, but my eyes were transfixed on Portnoy 90% of the time tonight. Such flair :metal (understatement).
My first concert since Alice in April....damn, I miss going to these things.
Had 25 at our preshow, our smallest gathering in the area, somewhat due to the sh*t parking in that area.

My full video is up from the show (HD is still rendering)
John Petrucci & Meanstreak LIVE @ Count Basie Red Bank NJ 10/12/2022 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezEc0i7YWOY)
I just saw your video: your Italian is not that bad!! :D

The more I listen to The Way Things Fall the more I fall in love with it. I just love the chemistry that JP and MP have on this song, especially with the chorus melody.

How was Meanstreak? Worth seeing? How long do they play for?
What do they play and is it family-friendly? I'm assuming there are vocals.
Thanks!
-
Played for about 45 minutes, it's thrashy metal so pretty heavy, I don't recall the lyrics being anything foul so I'd say other than being heavy metal, it's family friendly. I personally didn't care too much for their music, but if you are a fan of DT, it would be worth seeing their wives play. I'm glad I saw them

From what I recall, Meanstreak played about an hour or so, 8 songs total with vocals. As far as the lyrics, I don't remember clearly, but at my show, there were several children present (like 12 and under). If you like thrash metal or classic heavy metal, they're definitely worth seeing. But also, it's their first time playing together in almost 30 years and they worked hard to bring out a really entertaining opening set! I'd say if you paid for the ticket, might as well get the most out of it!

I'm not a thrash guy AT ALL, and I didn't find them offensive in any way. It's not really my music either, but it was a trip seeing the ladies and knowing the back story. I think it'd be a shame to miss them (though they get it: in Berkeley, Rena asked, after light applause, something like "okay, okay, who's REALLY here to see John?" to a much louder applause. :) )
I thought they were good for what they played; the drummer is good, and I dug the singer.

Cool! Thanks!

Nice, would be cool to catch the last show of the tour. I'll keep it in mind and make a decision close to it.
-
Not for nothing, but what, three weeks in now and they are ADDING shows? That's not a bad sign by any standard.
-
That's definitely a positive, just still think it sucks how empty that Red Bank show was... but if the guys are having fun and the tour is otherwise successful, that's great.
-
I liked some of Meanstreak’s stuff!
Does anyone know what kind of guitar Marlene is playing? It looked strange.

It's a Schecter guitar. Don't know the specific model though.
Edit: actually found the exact guitar

Thanks. Is it standard or is anything funky done to it?
-
My buddy says it looks like a strat headstock flipped backwards. It looks interesting.
-
The Atlanta show was very good. The crowd seemed really into it, and the guys looked like they were having a lot of fun. I hadn’t peeked at the setlist beforehand and I was surprised at how much they played. The show felt like it was just the right length. It was really cool to finally hear all of these songs from SA that I’ve been listening to for years. It was great to see JP and MP back together, and Dave LaRue killed it as he always does.
Overall: super fun, and amazing playing by all three guys. Great show.
-

Yeah, it's a reversed headstock. There are a few guitar makers that have models with reversed headstock. In terms of any modifications, I wouldn't know, but it looks like it's just the standard model (same pick ups, Floyd Rose bridge, inlays, etc.).

Man, what a great tour. I caught both Florida shows over the weekend and both nights were great. Meanstreak were legit. Some of the songwriting was iffy, and I think there was some noticeable rust in terms of stage presence for some of the band members, but everybody sounded good and there was some very :metal riffing. I wouldn't go way out of my way to make it happen, but if they were touring on their own close to me I'd catch a show for sure. And JP's set was just fantastic. I've always enjoyed his solo material and it was so nice to see him get a chance to spotlight it on his own and not wrapped up with everything else that comes with G3.

Agreed - this was a fun show all around! How was the attendance in FL? Seems like he's been drawing great crowds everywhere but NJ

Orlando seemed maybe 80% full. Balcony and edges were somewhat sparse. The crowd stood the whole time. JP: "Are you sure this is Sunday night and not Saturday!?" Great show.
-
Saw him last night and it was a great show.
The venue was pretty full as well, with many there just for Portnoy as well. When JP introduced him, he got a lot of applause.
Meanstreak weren't too bad as well. It was neat seeing older ladies rock out and play some metal. I really enjoyed their new song from their new EP, that sounded great. I do enjoy the vocalists vocals as well, she has a neat sort of mysterious tone. Overall, it was a nice gesture from JP to have them open for him. There was a lot of people there for them as well, and I think a lot of people knew Meanstreak is the wives' band.
I did not realize that the lead singer of Meanstreak lived here in Santa Fe, until I looked her up just now. She mentioned about how New Mexico is a beautiful state, and that she has friends and relatives here, which some were at the show. She probably suggested to them the venue they played at.
Since I could barely see the drummer, for JP I had no option but to stand if I wanted to see MP. It was great to have MP right in front of me playing, and JP coming up right up to me too. It was funny because the guy next to me seemed like he wanted to stand, but was hesitant. MP pointed to me as well, I smiled and continued to jam out.
At the end of the show, MP saw a pic on the stage, which then me and that same guy asked for it. MP showed it to us, and then said, "Naw. It's mine" and put it in his pocket. That made me laugh.

Was that at the El Cajon (San Diego) show? I was there as well
-
I've been watching videos from his shows for the last 2/3 weeks.
The Jam in Gemini has developed beautifully (the insert from Paradigm Shift fits perfectly) , sadly this is something we're missing in DT land since the ToT tour.
The solo section from Tunnel Vision is just crazy. He screwed it up a couple of times, but now seems to have it under control.
Overall a very exciting show I've would have gone to if it had come to Italy.

Just got back home today from Anaheim. When I was searching for a new metal band to listen to in 2016, what hooked me especially were the classical keyboards, JLB and seeing Petrucci play live.
I have seen DT 10 times now and G3 once. Let me say that this was...
Holy Freakin' shit!
John Petrucci can slay anything with that guitar. He was going off!, playing whatever and however within the song. Its not that he is only ripping all sorts of speed and technique, but it's as captivating as any band with more instruments and a singer. The melody and emotion mixed with fire-breathing guitar is something to experience.
I was in the front row right in the middle. Meanstreak came out and were better than I expected. They had some very enjoyable moments. All of them seemed to be having a great time. Rena can shred.
I finally saw Portnoy and he was fun. At one point playing catch with his drumstick with someone sidestage, while still drumming. I got a fistbump from him and (finally ;D) a pick.
The encore blew me away.
Go and see this if you can.

Unfortunately, I had to miss last week's show in Phx. Does anyone know if there will be a live Blu-Ray of this tour? I'd be all over that.

When Roie Avin asked JP on an interview if he planned to film one of the shows, he replied "sure, do you have a camera?" :rollin
My guess is that there are no plans for that, sadly.

If true, that's too bad since this tour is featuring songs from both albums. Who knows if there will even be a 3rd album and tour in the future. :dunno:

The good news is is that there's tons of great footage on youtube and the two audio recordings from Boston are excellent.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed the Paradigm Shift insert! It seems to have developed a bit more over the tour and is more clear now. In Atlanta it was a bit loose, but in Orlando it was a lot more obvious.

I knew I wasn't hearing things. I noticed that riff but couldn't remember where it was from. :lol
MP also played catch with I think his drum tech. I know it wasn't Maddie or Jimmy T.
Here are some pics from a phone photo dump.

Saw the show in SF last night, and it was SO good. Both bands were on fire. During intermission, Rena and their daughter came out and took seats to watch the show, and got huge cheers and applause from the crowd. Got to meet some of the ladies after the show was over. Really nice bunch, and eager to talk it up. The two new songs they played were pretty good. Looking forward to the EP when it is released in a couple of months. For those wondering, they tried to get their Roadkill album reprinted to have available at the merch stand, but it was delayed, so that's why they don't have it. Had a nice, but short, chat with JP afterward as well before he ducked out to go be with the family. He was pretty stoked to play to a packed theater on a Monday night. Crowd enthusiasm was pretty high considering it was a polite, seated prog crowd. We kind of joked about that, and he loves it when people stand up during the show, but he gets the herd mentality of people sitting so as not to offend those behind them who may want to stay seated and don't want their view obstructed.
-
I'm all about standing for concerts, but this type of show I understand why people would sit.

Supposedly Marlene and the singer (I forget her name off the top of my head) were out at the merch stand in Connecticut, and I'm bummed I missed them. I would have liked to have said hello (I met Marlene briefly about a month or so after the split; though I doubt she would remember).

Which is funny in my case because if I sat my view would've been obstructed, so I stood. And it also makes me wonder if others peoples views were obstructed in the front row, or I just happen to be just short enough and there were speakers right in my line of sight.

We were in the front row. We sat for Meanstreak. We were too low and could barely see the drummer and only parts of the rest unless they were at the front of the stage. So. We stood.

The show in Anaheim on last Saturday. Disney by day, metal by night!
Haha! Perfect day! I wonder if JP hit up Disney as well while they were down there. I didn't get a chance to ask.
I actually though of JP when I went on the new Star Wars "Rise of the Resistance" ride.

I can't imagine he didn't. Gotta get inspiration for The Astonishing II!

I decided to hit the show in Sacramento last night since the show in SF was so good. Dare I say that despite the funky venue and being really tired, this show was even better than the show before it? I think it was. JP broke a string early in the set (I forget which song now), and switched out his guitar without hardly missing a beat. From that moment on, he played like a man possessed. I got to talk to him VERY briefly afterward (they were loading out and preparing for a long drive to Salt Lake City, which is going to be harder than normal due to some pretty bad storms we've had over the last few days that dumped a lot of snow on the mountains between here and there), and he said he was exhausted and was just thinking about how he was going to get through this show, but somehow found this boost of energy out of nowhere that carried him through. I think it was really noticeable. He was really giving it everything he had, and the rest of the band seemed to feed off of that and take it up a notch as well. For some reason, security was a LOT more strict than at the previous venue. But during the encore (Glasgow Kiss), about 3/4 of the balcony and the last few rows of the floor all left their seats and pressed up toward the front of the venue, and it was one of the most amazing crowd reactions I have ever seen at a show. At that point, there was nothing security could do about it, so they just let it ride. Everyone was standing, fist pumping, taking pics and video, and just having a great time, and it was glorious. You could tell John and the band were really feeding off of it, and I think they extended the outro/finale even more than normal. Overall, really good show. I'm glad I decided to go.
Overall, I'm not the biggest fan of instrumental music. Guys like Satriani, for example, are mindblowingly talented, and I can definitely appreciate the virtuosity. But I also don't have any interest in listening or watching him play past a couple of songs. There are a small handful of guitarists that can hold my interest for an album's worth of material. JP, Travis Larson, and Steve Vai (occasionally) pretty much comprise my short list. And even with them, it's very rare that I will gravitate toward listening to an instrumental album over one with vocals. So although I wanted to go so this tour, my enthusiasm wasn't super high, just due to the nature of how I relate to this type of music/performance. That said, I again want to say I'm super glad I took in not only a show, but two. If anyone is on the fence about going to any of the remaining shows, I highly recommend going. If you are even marginally a fan, I think you'll have a great time.

Did you talk to MP at all? Just curious because didn't he have some static with you being the guy behind the forum? Not trying to start any drama but since everybody is all into the good vibes, thought maybe it'd be an interesting meeting.
-
No. I really wanted to, but he went right to the bus and didn't come out after either of the shows. Marlene didn't either. I had hoped to talk to both of them. Last night, nobody came out, officially. JP happened to come out to talk to Maddi, and came over and said hi to me and my son, and I talked for like 30 seconds and snapped a quick pic before he had to take off.

This is unofficial, and I have no FACT basis for saying this, but I got a distinct vibe at the early shows that Mike was purposefully keeping it low key. They didn't come out or hang at the bus for either of the two shows I saw (and Ridgefield is very well set up for that; I've met and/or seen Mike there before in that way). I think he's very conscious about not being the old "Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater!"TM during these shows. It's John's gig, and I think Mike is really trying hard to respect and celebrate that. My opinion only.

I kinda have the same feeling.
I do think a factor is also that JP doesn't want to create any room for misconception about the possibility of Mike rejoining DT.
I do have to give credit to MP for being a great wingman for JP in this occasion.

It makes since for MP to do that and good on him! :tup

Just saw from MP that it took them 48 hours to get to Denver from Sacramento. Busses broke down, and there were snow storms over the sierra.
They arrived there at 7:30 tonight for tonights show. He said the doors opened and the audience will get to see them set up and then the show will go on, albeit late.
That would be cool to see. No wonder JP was stressed and they wanted to leave Sacramento right away. I for one, would not want to be on a tour bus going over the Sierras in a snow storm. Its already a kinda sketchy drive in places and I have driven it dozens of times.

Yeah, I've heard of many similar stories to this of having issues driving through that part of the US on tours. I would be fairly uncomfortable. I guess I'd stick in my bed and keep the curtains closed :lol Glad they made it safely and everyone got to see the show.

True story: I was part of a history seminar out there and we took a couple field trips, one in the Sierra Mountains where....our bus broke down. Not only that, it was right in the area of where the Donner Party, ya know, ate people.
Fortunately it was the summer so the weather was awesome and we were only a couple miles from our destination so we walked through old railroad tunnels that had been dynamited by Chinese Rail Workers. We found old telegraph line, nails, and even pieces of Chinese pottery. We were late for lunch but thankfully no one was hungry enough to experiment with cannibalism.
Anyway, glad the Petrucci tour experienced our luck and not the Donner's.

Not so fast, my friend. While JP, MP, Dave LaRue, and Maddi looked happy and well-fed, the girls and crew from Meanstreak were conspicuously absent.

This was a good interview. JP just did it on the road.

Leaving the Chicago show last night and my girlfriend stops by the merch booth to make sure there was a shirt with Portnoy's name and buys it. Her reaction was "I didn't see a John Petrucci show, I saw a Mike Portnoy show with some guitar bits in between drum fills" hahaha.

Seeing the Toronto show on Thursday. It's been snowing this week, hope The Great White North treats JP well.

Looks like JLB went to the show in Toronto tonight.

Saw Mike say on FB that Myung also came and saw the show in NY, and of course Jordan did at the show near him as well.
I wonder if Mangini turned up to support John on the tour? Are Mangini and Portnoy even still friends, or would it feel too awkward?
-Marc.

Portnoy and Mangini are friends. ;)

I took carpe diem to extremes this week - had to fly to Raleigh,NC for work on Tuesday, and after two days of meetings, I flew back to Toronto on the 04:35 flight. Got in at 06:30pm, did customs and immigration as quick as possible, and went straight to the Danforth Music Hall. I arrived at 07:40, just in time to check in my bag at the venue and watch Meanstreak. As mentioned here in the thread, James was in the audience, and Chance Labrie was next to him. Chance went backstage to watch JP, MP and Dave LaRue. JP's set was incredible, and it was really exciting and refreshing to see him and MP exchanging looks and interacting during the set. It was way more spontaneous than the current DT show, if I'm being honest.
Richard Chycki was also in the audience with his wife, and I didn't want to bother him, although he seemed very sociable. I took the picture below with James between the sets of Meanstreak and JP, and mentioned our interview of a few months ago.
I also waited outside for the band after the show to see if I could chat with JP and MP, but only Dave stopped. He said he'll do a few dates next year with the Steve Morse Band, and that there could be more Flying Colors stuff between now and Cruise to the Edge in 2024.

Just a few comments for JP's 35th show out of 36 in Sherbrooke, Québec last friday. Sold out concert (1200 people), lots of energy from the crowd, long standing ovation for Mike Portnoy, amazing display of virtuosos musicians (I wonder how many notes Petrucci makes during a show, simply unbelievable).
I was so close from them, that's the advantage of a small venue + cheaper tickets. They put out an amazing performance and it was worth every pennies.
Meanstreak was great as well. Great reaction from the crowd, these women are very talented and pretty good songs too. A beautiful evening!

Hoping JP releases at least a live album (audio) for this. I missed all the possible stops because of a delay in an out of the country work commitment (was supposed to last two days, got delayed two freaking weeks and got tropical storm Lisa to top it off at the work site lol).

A concert dvd would be great too. However, I doubt this show got filmed.
