The Dan Patrick Show hit on this topic today, and it brought back a bunch of memories. I don't know if this resonates with the younger crowd here, but when I was in my teens and early 20s, you bought whatever you could afford. Quantity over quality was the name of the game. So...what'd'ya got?
I'll start if off with Schaefer!

It was not good, but a 24-pack cost less than $10 back in 1986/87.

That's you on the right, correct. On the left shoulder of the Rush dude?

Here is the pinnacle of bad beer, imo...

If Paul can share a vintage pic of Bad Beer in action, so will I.
Busch Beer!

Taken in the fall of 1986. Two drunk and stoned dudes! 18 y/o TAC!
-
For us it was what could we steal. After that it was price/ABV. Black Label tended to win that one. Drank more than my fair share of Schaefer, too. The Bull would sometimes how up, too. In truth, we were never diehard beer drinkers. Beer, whisky, Boone's Farm, champagne, we were equal opportunity boozers.

Rush dude = me!

Stroh's is bad enough, but Stroh's Light?! :omg: It reminds me of the store brand "BEER" that just had some blue lines and the word on the can!
-
I can't even tell what we're drinking. Molson Golden maybe?

Now I need to see if I can scrounge up a pic of me drinking beer.... I'm not even sure if one exists.
-
Ugh, I had one of the worst hangovers ever after drinking some Black Label. We used to joke that it was so bad, Canada had to export it since no one would drink it there.
I remember during the ice-brewed craze in the late 90’s, that there was a Milwaukee’s Best Ice that was fucking awful, and it was even worse coming back up.
-
My step dad had a fridge full of these. Problem was you had to drink at least 7 to get a buzz on.
I much preferred wine coolers at the time but the thought of drinking one of those now makes me gag.
-
Haffenreffer destroyed me as a teen.

It would be the first pic of yourself that you've shared on DTF.

Hmm, maybe I'll keep the mystery alive a bit longer :lol
-
For as much alcohol as I have consumed in my lifetime - which I have to believe is above the average - I never liked the taste of beer. Even in college when I drank it to try and fit in, part of me was wondering how this beverage is so popular? Once I discovered (to my detriment) there were other potent potables that could get me inebriated (quicker and better on my palate), I stopped drinking beer and haven't had one in 20+ years.

Nope. Don't make me get Tim to strong arm you with his The Club 1000.

If I knew what the hell that was, I'd definitely use it! :lol

This is basically me as well. I drank beer a lot back in the day because it was easy and cheap, but I can't say I ever loved the taste. Fast forward to 2022 and I almost never drink anymore (I can count the number of drinks with booze I have had this year so far on one hand), but a cold beer on a hot day can still be quite nice. Usually once or twice a summer at a party or picnic or something, I will crush a hot dog and a beer. Otherwise, nah.

Yes..I had one of those! You put it on the steering wheel. I bought a new car when I got out of college and I had one.
Believe it or not, someone once broke into my car in a parking lot, and was able to remove it by using a dent puller on the key core. Pulled it right out.
-
Or cut the steering wheel.
-
My dad insisted I put one of those on my car when they got me one at 16.
-
I never enjoyed beer much when I was young and looking to get blotto. It wasn't until the 90s when new and interesting kinds of beer started popping up everywhere that I actually developed and interest. Seemed like in the 80s there were 20 kinds of beer and they all tasted exactly the same. Then there became hundreds, and they all tasted different.
-
In my high school years, we actually drank a lot of wine coolers.
-
My first really positive experience being inebriated was on Boone's.
I think the first beer (and I use that term loosely) I drank was a Zima, because it was popular and new at the time, and got bonus points for rhyming with my last name.
-
Zima :lol Not beer! :lol
-
Zima is for girls with landing strips. I do remember correctly.

*Checks in to see how the conversation about beer is going...

This is what we'd pound down in college. We said it had the best price to taste ratio. That was until Kirkland started selling 48 packs for the price of most 30s. I haven't seen that beer available in years though. That might have been a temporary thing to get people in their package stores.

Shitty cheap beer? Milwaukee's Best, here, known locally as "The Beast".
If that was sold out, we went for The Beast Lite.
-
Schaefer Bar Bottles was the cheapest we could get at college. That, then Busch. I drank a lot of Busch. Put me in the camp of not really liking the taste of beer, but drinking a LOT of it in my younger days. I drank only vodka for a long time, but oddly, I'm moving back to beer. I sort of don't mind the taste anymore. I saw Ace Frehley last night and had a couple Miller High Life's with dinner and they were perfect.
When I was in Philly, most of the dive-ier bars all ran "$2 PBR" specials. At first I thought it would be hard to turn down a deal like that, but... no, it wasn't that hard. :) :) :)
-
We bought cheap bullshit beer when I was a student. Nowadays I do like some good-tasting beer though :)
-
I remember Meister Brau being cheeper than the generic beer. Really bad stuff. Didn't stop us from drinking it though...
-
This was the first cheap beer I could think of…

I think I remember that green bottle with the gold foil. Maybe Moson, which was definitely a staple for us, but it was slightly above the bottom of the price range.

I bought my first car when I was 19. My sister loaned me $6,100 in cash, and I made 0 interest payments to her. A Mazda B2000 pickup. No A/C, no rear bumper, and no passenger side mirror. I'm not sure it even had a radio. The first thing I bought for it was The Club.
I was aware of Hamm's and Pabst Blue Ribbon, but neither was common out here. For some reason, we did have Milwaukee's Best, and that was definitely in the rotation (and which made me wonder what Milwaukee's worst was if that was its best!). Meister Brau was also kinda popular.
First alcoholic drink I had was a California Cooler that I downed in the parking lot outside the Del Taco where I worked.
This was the first cheap beer I could think of…

That one doesn't look familiar, but it's about as generic looking as possible. :lol

PBR was the go to for cheap and actually not that bad.

3 litre plastic bottles of 8.4% White Lightning could be purchased for less than £2.
What could possibly go wrong? :dangerwillrobinson:

At PSU, Yeungling was pretty common and cheap. Keystone Light a bit cheaper. We drank a lot of that for beer. But we mostly drank the cheap Vodka called Vladimir :lol 8 bucks for a plastic 1.75L. Tasted like rubbing alcohol but that's what got you drunk for cheap.

I'd never heard of Yeungling until a few years ago...but Keystone...oh man. I'd forgotten about that. Awful stuff.
And if we're talking about liquor, my go-to was Yukon Jack. Apparently, they now print "ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE" on the label, which is just hilarious.

Michelob was my go to when I was a youngster.

Yup.
-
Michelob was my go to when I was a youngster.
I always went for Modelo or Guinness.
-
I cut my teeth on Miller High Life - now I can't stand the smell.
But has Black Label been represented in this thread?
My friend was in college and we went to visit him. Black label was 5.99 a case. We drank all day, played frisbee yada yada and then around 9:00pm, somebody handed me a bong. By 9:30 I was power puking ala Linda Blair all over the bushes in the front yard.
Lesson learned..... :yeahright
-

Guinness was a few years later. Modelo I only tried 10 years ago surprisingly.
-
Modelo Especial is piss. Might as well be Black Label, though it's been a while so Black Label might be an improvement. Negro Modelo is excellent. It's a staple here. It's the beer that's always in my fridge.
-
So...funny you say that. I had never had Modelo before I went to Texas in May. I would never go for the lighter Modelo but I did get Modelo Negro and hell yes it was excellent.
Can't seem to find the Negro up here though. Sucks, because I really liked it.
-
I've seen it an Market Basket stores Tim.

They don't sell beer in in supermarkets in Massachusetts. I think each chain is allowed 7 licenses to sell in their stores.

It's hard to find down here. Every damn store keeps 40 12-packs of the pisswater in the cooler and piled up outside of it, and they're always there. One little part of the cooler is designated for six or so 12s of Negro Modelo and they're always sold out. Grocers are fucking dumb. :lol
-
I bought one of the giant cans down on the San Antonio River walk, and then when we got back to where we were staying in Marble Falls, I found a sixer.

Yeah, I should have specified. Negro Modelo is the one I would always drink. I have a local liquor store that always has it in stock.
-

I'd never heard of Modelo before about 5 years ago. Guiness is seriously high-end for this discussion. First time I had it, I thought it was awful, but it's now a favorite of mine. From my perspective, Michelob was positioned pretty high among what I perceived as the big 4 of domestic beers (Michelob, Miller, Coors and Bud). Miller Genuine Draft was my go-to when it was on sale.
Another one I remembered is Olympia. Back before my older brother became a Mormon, he had photos with tons of empty cans of Olympia. I'm not sure I ever had it, but I had the impression it was pretty bad.
-
Never heard of it. The cheap stuff was,
Red, White & Blue
Black Label
Keystone
Busch
Schlitz
Big Mouth Mickey
Bud
Old Milwaukee
Ect...
-
Mickey's was pretty good. We also got this stuff:

-
I went to see Downset and Madball with my brother in law. He was into that music. He hung with a gang that slam danced and was on Biohazard videos.
They were all drinking the Old English in paper bags. They told other gangs I was off limits. I felt like a bitch side piece that night. :lol
It was fucking brutal in that pit. I took pictures of it all night with a disposable camera.
-
I never heard of Big Mouth Mickey.
-
The bottles looked like green hand grenades.
-
Hah! I just google imaged it. Definitely never seen those before.
-
A couple years ago, I was at a friend’s bachelor party, he was curious to see if there was any difference between taste in the cheap domestic beers in stores. He wanted us all to bring a pack of different ones so we could do a blind taste test and rank them. There was a pretty good diversity represented, from Coors to Bud Light, Keystone, Busch, Pacifico… and then I show up with Steel Reserve 211. I had never tried it before, but I had heard of its reputation for sure, and I knew I had a winner, or loser as the case may have been, in my hands. It was pretty well universally ranked as the worst on everybody’s list, including mine.
But even with that swill, it’s still not the worst tasting beer that I’ve ever had.
-
I had two beers when I went out with a friend last night to a covered patio at a local bar and grill and had a splitting headache when I woke up this morning.
Fortunately, an aspirin knocked it right out, but it was a reminder of what a lightweight I am now. :lol :lol

Only had it in Epcot. Seemed like law.
-
In my college days, I would hang out in Washington Square Park with a bunch of Colt45 tall boys. That stuff tasted like dirt and got me all kinds of f@cdup.
More recently, after my beer league hockey games, we’d drink Natural Light, which is also pretty putrid.
-
Add me to the small group who can't stand beer. Just the smell makes me want to vomit. Give me straight scotch anyday without a problem but for some reason, I hate beer.
-
I’m not gonna lie…I still drink Busch Light!

I usually only drink beer in social gatherings and in those cases I only pick stuff I enjoy or if I pick something new it's usually by someones request. However occasionally I just get whatever the bartender recommends and that can lead to some questionable things.
I've rarely drink alcohol on my own however sometimes I make myself a GT. My favourite beer during summer is probably a cold Hoegaarden.
-
Mickey's was pretty good. We also got this stuff:

We experimented with that, but if we were going that route, we tended to lean toward The Bull, Schlitz Malt Liquor.

My wife picked up some Peroni a few days ago.
Disgusting.
So, I was born in The Dominican Republic, and the main beer there is a beer called Presidente. If you mention beer in DR, you are talking about Presidente. I had a few during my teens, but I was never a beer person so never liked them.
Anyways fast forward from my DR days to a few years ago, when I tried my first Peroni, and I swear the taste is identical to Presidente, just a different label. It was weird, but I started looking into the history of both beers only to discover that Presidente was invented in the 1930's only a few years after Italians were migrating to DR (Me thinks they copied). Just thought that was interesting :) off I go
-
Oh I've had Presidente. A bit like Heineken. Never was fond of either.
-
My dad used to say that all beer is horse piss.
It's just that some horses are sicker than the others..... :hat
-
I kinda like Presidente. As far as Heineken is concerned, I prefer Heine Lite over their regular beer. But MAN does that stuff make me have to piss. Speaking of, that’s sort of a problem at my age with drinking beer in general. At home I’ll drink freely, but if I’m at a concert or outing, I need to regulate my intake just cuz of the piss factor. :sadpanda:
Also, I used to frequent a downtown Manhattan dive bar called Kino’s where all the barmaids were dressed in 2-piece bikinis. Whenever you ordered a Heineken, the barmaid would pull the cold bottle from the fridge, slap her ass with it and declare “One Heine comin’ right up!”
