Title: Spider-Man: No Way Home - Out NOW! Spoilers! No. 3 Domestic/No. 6 WW All-Time!
Post by: The Letter M on November 16, 2021, 10:39:27 PM
With the new trailer out earlier this evening, I figured we could start a new thread for the film since it's about a month out.

I also wanted to try and keep potential spoilers for NWH out of the MCU thread, especially since there have been numerous "leaks" in recent weeks that point to the definite inclusion of Tobey's and Andrew's Spider-Men, as well as Charlie Cox as (a variant of?) Matt Murdock.

For anyone who hasn't been following leaks, there was one infamous one several weeks ago of Andrew in his Spider-Man suit crouching by some rafters that looked very much like the ones seen at the Statue Of Liberty battle seen in the latest trailer. Folks and fans have been debating the authenticity of that image for weeks now but the new trailer has been changing everyone's minds!

And speaking of the new trailer, Sony Brasil's edit of the trailer featured a quick second more of the Villains charging Spider-Man, which showed Lizard's head getting hit and swung to his left, and it definitely didn't look like debris hitting him. The going theory is that shot has the 3 Spider-Men charging at Electro, Sandman, and Lizard (who gets punched or kicked in the head).

Anyways, feel free to discuss any and all leaks, theories, hopes and worries for this film here. This has been my most anticipated film of the year, and even then I haven't been able to pry myself away from leaks and trailer breakdowns. Hopefully nothing TOO major leaks before the film comes out. I like some light spoilers but nothing top heavy that'll ruin the film for me

Of course, once the film comes out I'll change the thread title to reflect actual spoiler discussion of the film.

-Marc.

The concept of a multiverse is something I find to be incredibly stupid, and something I was not looking forward to at all in phase 4.  But this officially has me hyped!  :caffeine:

I hope not.

But I’m torn on this movie. I’m excited for obvious reasons and cause I loved the other two. But these trailers aren’t selling me on the story. Dr. Strange is acting so out of character and the plot seems….dumb. Though I’m hoping there’s a lot more to it.

Either way I feel bad for this movie. I have no idea how many people will be able to judge it for what it is. If it doesn’t star 3 Peter Parkers, Miles Morales, Daredevil, Venom,  Voltron, and Mike Portnoy, people will be so pissed off just due to the insane amount of “leaks” that may or may not be true. I’m trying not to expect anything that isn’t in the trailers. Only one Parker? Fine. No daredevil? Fine. Just give me a good story, cool action, and get me invested in the characters.

I'm not a fan of Sam Raimi spider man and am not the least bit interested in previous incarnations villains coming back.

Never saw the Garfield Spider Mans either.

But Into The Spider Verse worked cause it was a cartoon.

Spiderverse worked because it was a great movie.  Being a cartoon had nothing to do with the quality of the story and acting.

I'm very much looking forward to this.  jingle.kids and I have been re-watching all the Spidey movies (just finished Amazing Spider-Man 1 on the weekend - man that was a bad movie ... but I though Garfield was a great Peter Parker).

This. By far the best Spiderman flick for me, and a top 5 Marvel flick in general.

I generally like the Spider-man movies, but the tone of them is a really tricky thing.   Spidey is not one of those characters that you can opt for the "Rowdy Roddy Piper, I came to kick ass and chew bubble gum" action flick trope.   But on the flip-side, a high school trig nerd is only so believeable without SOME machismo.   I don't like Toby Maguire generally, but he was a decent Spider-man, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Tom Holland Spider-man.  I think he strikes the perfect balance.  I haven't seen the trailer, yet, but I'm generally all-in on the Spider-man films.

I am really hyped for this movie as a Spider-Man fan in general, will be neat to see the old Spider-Men back (by all accounts) and also to see Molina and Dafoe back. But I also feel like this is gonna be a bit of a mess. Probably a fun spectacle movie, but I just can't see it being as good as some of the more 'focused' movies like Spider-Man 2 or the original Spider-Man for example.

So that settles it, right?

I dunno. The plot just looks…dumb in a completely convoluted way. The trailers are mostly just “LOOK WHO ELSE IS IN THIS MOVIE!!”  Which is fine but doesn’t actually make a good movie. I am not too worried since the last two movies were fantastic but I just really haven’t seen much besides “MULTIVERSE AND LOTS OF OTHER CHARACTERS” which, again, is not enough to make a good movie. I need a good story and to be invested in the characters.

I'm very hyped for this movie because of the spectacle but I share those worries. I think Homecoming and Far From Home were good (but not as good as the Raimi films for me) but I do see this movie walking into the trap of trying to do too many things. This could be that sort of movie that is a blast to watch in the cinema and see certain characters on screen again that we haven't seen in 15 years but I'm also worried about a possible lack of depth/satisfying arcs in the movie because of how many elements they are plugging in.

I'm kinda with you here. I was really hoping that the third Spiderman movie would allow Peter to get out of the shadow of Tony Stark and finally have his own movie. But instead we get him pairing up with Dr Strange and a whole host of other people. I'm optimistic it will be good though.

I saw this story yesterday, right from Amy Pascal herself. I wonder if by letting Marvel Studios continue to produce Tom Holland's Spider-Man, they've got to be able to let their Marvel/Spider-Adjacent characters play in the MCU toybox as well? They could try to fit Morbius into the MCU, and maybe finally get Black Cat and/or Silver Sable off the ground. I could see them co-producing series for Disney+ now that there was that deal to let some Sony properties stream on Disney+ (including the newer Spider-Man films). There's a lot of promise here, but I just hope Sony let's Marvel take the reins on some of them just to make sure they all work. Remember how Homecoming was off to a rocky start with that whole "8 Years Later" title card that was SO wrong as to be offensive? At least things have gotten a bit better since then.

I also hope this means Marvel and drop in a Spidey cameo here and there. I would love to see him pop up in a Fantastic Four post-credits scene since they're all NY based heroes, or if they reboot Daredevil on Disney+, throw in Peter Parker for a bit.

This has been widely reported, but her wording was weirdly opaque:

Quote
This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel — [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie,” said Pascal in an interview with Fandango. “We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies…Yes, Marvel and Sony are going to keep going together as partners.

She's confirmed more MCU movies, but this could be interpreted as one more Tom Holland movie + 2 or more other MCU movies.  Miles Morales could be brought in, or some of the other Sony/Marvel properties could be ported into the MCU.

It's the final act big action set-piece as far as I can tell. There have been on-set sightings of bus-stop ads showing the Statue Of Liberty holding up Cap's shield, so I guess it was advertising the rebuild/addition of the shield to the monument...until it all gets destroyed by Spider-Man's enemies. Whoops. Leave it to Kevin Feige to revisit Liberty Island for a third act action spectacle all these years later!

So I spent the better part of my Saturday watching the Raimi Trilogy on BD and wow what a series of films. Definitely dated at times but the direction and acting, especially from Dafoe and Molina, really sold them as great films. I plan on revisiting the Webb duology on Tuesday, and at the very least Far From Home on Thursday morning before seeing No Way Home.

Jingle.kids and I have been doing that over th past month, and just hav FFH to watch sometime this week. I found Garfield to be. Better Peter Parker, but his Spider-Man was a dick. TAS (both) could’ve been so much better,  Oh, and Dane DeHaan was absolutely awful.

I think Andrew Garfield is probably the best actor of the 3 and he's great at giving emotional performances but Tobey is still my Peter Parker - he's the one who feels the closest like the Peter Parker I knew from the comics (the quiet nerdy kid) but I think a lot of credit goes to how the character was written. The Peter Parker in the TASM movies feels badly written in contrast, I don't know why they added more elements to his character because it made it feel like someone else. He didn't need to be the skateboarding indie kid on top of everything else. Besides I think Garfield is too good looking and too cool to pass for Peter Parker. Tobey and Tom Holland both look more 'average' which is kinda what I think of Peter Parker as. Your every day guy who kinda blends in. :p

All three actors have brought something positive to the dual role, but Garfield's version of Pete suffers from muttering his lines syndrome - which is why I'd put him last, also he looks a tad too old for the role.  Admittedly he's also clearly in the weakest films which isn't his fault.

1- Holland
2- Maguire
3- Garfield

Garfield was always way too emo for me.

McGuire was a fantastic Parker, albeit about 10 years too old, visibly.

Garfield was a fantastic Spider-Man and a non-believable Parker.

Tom Holland is aces at both.

Agree on the last point.

My opinion on the former two is precisely the opposite of yours.  Garfield's Spidey was a douche-waffle ... he was as bad as Toby's emo-Peter from SM3.

I watched the Webb Duology today and it was... OK. There were parts I still liked, but I would still take the lesser 2 Raimi films over the 2 Webb films any day. I really enjoyed Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, as I did back in 2012 and 2014, and the Lizard was really cool, but there wasn't much else that really wowed me about these two films. Andrew Garfield was OK, and definitely played up the teenage attitude a bit more than Tobey did, but he still looked too old for being a high schooler.

I've got work over the next two days, but I'll try and squeeze in a rewatch of Homecoming somewhere, and then hopefully Far From Home directly before seeing NHW, which will literally be picking up right from the end of FFH.

As a warning, the film has been seen in Hollywood and media reviews will be shared tomorrow, so tread the internet carefully over the next few days! Spoilers are bound to appear out of nowhere, so hopefully no one drops anything too egregious.

It sucks, right? The "CLICK ME CLICK ME" culture we live in means people will be posting every spoiler possible as soon as they as possibly can, which really sucks for everyone except them.

The critics are usually good at not leaking things, so I'm gonna be okay today and maybe tomorrow, but Thursday is off limits. Luckily I'm seeing it Friday, so I don't have to avoid it for too long.

It's been about 4.5 hours since I've seen it and I still have so many emotions about it. With regards to comic book films, I've only felt this way about two other films: Avengers Endgame and Logan, and this sits somewhere between those two in terms of the range of emotions I had while watching NWH. I am definitely going to see it again this weekend!

It's the official first release day, though I know some of us caught it yesterday. From here on, if you would like to share SPOILERS, you can, as I've updated the subject/thread title to reflect spoilers within the thread!

All I'll say for now is that, despite the leaks and rumors, I still wasn't prepared to see what I saw and it all felt so natural and directed so well. Watts did an spectacular job, and Zendaya (and her chemistry with Tom) was a standout performance. I also loved the musical cues being brought back for many of the characters!

Incredible performances from everyone in this movie.

That was definitely an emotional highlight for me. Actually, from the condo to the end was just full of emotional moments for me, full of sadness AND joy, and every single person in those scenes acted the hell out of their parts. Jon Watts really knew how to work each character on this film, especially all of the ones that have come back from the Raimi and Webb films, and dare I say, perhaps their performances in this film might eclipse their parts in their original films (Jamie Foxx most definitely, though Molina and Dafoe really put in some amazing performances themselves, the latter really stealing the scenes he was in, at least for me).

I'm thinking of going to see it again tomorrow afternoon! Heck, I may even see it THREE times, it's definitely worth it!

I went today and saw it again, it was more fun this second time. Man, what a movie! Defoe steals it on it. He was born to be the green goblin.

Well that fucking ruled. Ambition idea and fantastic execution

I just about teared up when you-know-who caught you-know-who.

Oh man, that scene landed *so* well. Made me really glad that I did a rewatch of the older movies because I wouldn't have remembered otherwise.

That. Was. Amazing.

I’ll go into more later, but good lord did they really knock this one out of the park. And I went in skeptical.

Yeah, I went in skeptical as well, and just kept shaking my head at how well done it was.  During that whole final scene with May, I was very unsettled, knowing she was obviously not right.  But there were no visible wounds, and I was hoping it would somehow be fine.  ...until she said the "with great power" line.  As soon as she started, I was like, "she is going to die right now."  Just about lost it.

I am also blown away by how, somehow, the feel/tone of all three Spiderman franchises was present, and it still somehow worked seamlessly.

I'm absolutely fucking speechless. Can't believe they pulled it off.

I just about teared up when you-know-who caught you-know-who.

Dude next to me in the theater just screamed REDEMPTION!!!!  :lol

Agree with others that Zendaya was beyond outstanding, she's really setting herself up to be the big money actress of the next generation, and deservedly so.

I think the last scene in the coffee shop was the most emotional for me, as Peter resigns himself to not having what he most desires to keep them safe. Just brutally selfless.

Forgot how amazing it is to see one of these in a hyped crowd of fans on opening weekend. The crowd went so apeshit when the others showed up, and even moreso when they all took flight together. Probably as loud as when Cap got Miljonir or when Thor arrived on Wakanda. I fucking love that shit so much.

I'll probably catch it again Sun or Mon in IMAX, just saw it regular tonight cause IMAX was way too late.

Also... It says a lot that by the end of the movie, I had totally forgotten that Matt Murdoch was in the beginning.

Saw it for a second time today, and I gotta say, even knowing what happens going in, it just makes it better, especially knowing to look out for Easter eggs this time around.

This is the first film I've seen in theaters twice since Endgame (as far as I can recall), and it's totally worth seeing twice. Heck, I may see it again in a couple weeks cuz Regal has Tuesday Value days where tickets are all 6.25 +tax!

Surprised no one has commented on the Dr. stranger teaser at the end, which looked fantastic.

I'm still gathering my thoughts on this movie, but it was way better than my already high expectations. Top tier MCU, and I agree that for all the different characters and 3 Spider-Man franchises, it all worked so well.

This movie really blew me away, definitely in my top 5 or so MCU films, which I did not expect at all.

I'm glad Strange was used sparingly, and that this was a real Spider-Man movie focusing on him and his pathos and lore.

The audience going nuts for Murdock, the returning villains, and obviously the other Peter's was so fun to be around, though the inclusion of other moments such as "I figured you'd be black" or "I'm something of a scientist myself" were nice touches.

Yes, May dying broke my heart and I did not expect it. And I also got really emotional when Garfield saved MJ. Such a beautiful moment that he played so well. Honestly, the script was just so damn good and so were the actors. I even loved the little things like Garfield doing this like slingshot move that only his Spider-Man did in the solo films. Just really well attended script.

Tons of thoughts, but most of them have been said.

Though the first post-credits scene confused me a bit. So Venom was briefly in the MCU but now isn't........but what about Morbius? Keaton is in that movie, but he also mentions Venom, so I'm just lost.

There was a piece of venom that stayed in the MCU from that post credit scene, which I'm assuming will introduce a venom in the MCU (maybe a different actor?)

Alright, I have some time to put my thoughts down.

The good:

- This script was executed almost to perfection. It stayed true to the previous MCU Spidey movies, while also bringing in new elements from the others. The characters and the acting were great.
- Talking about the script, this movie had the one thing I love the most about the MCU. Even if the execution was great, it did not take itself too serious and knew when to scale things down. Everything felt organic, from the emotional scenes, to the funny ones, to the surprise ones. Just a good mix of story and comedy.
- The way those villains played their roles again was great, but Dafoe did such an amazing job with Green goblin. It was better than the original Spiderman (IMO). It was also fitting that he was the last villain standing, given what happened to Aunt May and that he was the first villain in a spider movie.

The Bad:

- The one thing I did not like (and this is just me nitpicking at this point) was how easy it was for Ned to learn how to open a portal (though he struggle to close them at the end).

Some "Bigger picture" thoughts.

- I know that there is at least 1 more movie where Tom Holland will play Spiderman in the MCU (based on contract, if I'm not mistaken), but I honestly wish this was it. It was such a great conclusion to his story, and a clever way of writing him out. Bringing him back, even if for 1 movie, would kind of undo what No Way Home set out to do. I'm sure that whatever they do will work out, but just my thoughts.
- A thought/question I had towards the end was, who actually messed up the multiverse, Loki or Strange? Both pretty much messed up wth the timelines, and even if what Loki did occurred outside of time itself, it could be that it was amplified by Dr. Strange spell, or the other way around. In the teaser trailer at the end, we saw Strange in what looked like Kang's sanctuary, so I guess we will need to wait and see.

Overall, 9.5/10 for this movie. Would put it at my top 3 just behind Infinity War and Endgame. I'll probably watch it again (maybe on Friday morning since I'm off work).

Surprised no one has commented on the Dr. stranger teaser at the end, which looked fantastic.

Oh, well it was definitely a semi-surprise for me. I had heard that the trailer had leaked a couple days prior to NWH's release, so I thought it would've been attached to the front of the film but when I didn't see it there, I figured it was at the end, a la the Avengers trailer seen at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. Seeing Gargantos (not to be confused with Shuma-Gorath) for a brief second was mind-blowing. Like, I know we have aliens in the MCU, but seeing tentacle demons is a bit wild to me, but I'm ready for it. I'm enjoying that a lot of Phase 4 is about team-ups rather than strictly solo films, and seeing Wanda and America Chavez show up in this film will amplify my excitement for it even more.

I'm still gathering my thoughts on this movie, but it was way better than my already high expectations. Top tier MCU, and I agree that for all the different characters and 3 Spider-Man franchises, it all worked so well.

Agreed - this was a once-in-a-lifetime alignment of the stars, literally and figuratively. Something like this couldn't have been done before now, and I doubt something like this could have been done after now.

After Endgame, the cosmic stakes of the MCU have risen, and with this year's introduction into multiversal shenanigans with Loki and What If? have set up NWH's premise fairly reasonably, especially after the multiversal-fake-out we had in FFH with Mysterio's back story. And it's pretty genius that they managed to rework both NWH and DSITMOM after their release positions were swapped (because IIRC, Strange's sequel was supposed to come out BEFORE Spider-Man NWH), and so it all seems to fit together so nicely.

I've read/heard that this was Marvel Studios' way of saying to Sony "Oh, you wanted Venom in the MCU? Sure, but we're sending him back to you ASAP, but let us have a bit of his symbiote before he goes." I think it's a fun tease for future possibilities. I think if the MCU is headed towards the Secret Wars (because that would be an amazing way to feature the Fantastic Four and the X-Men as well), I think we could see Spider-Man get his black suit then, and we can finally get a comic-accurate black-suit Spider-Man in the MCU, but that might not be for a few more years, and I'd like to see Peter get one solo film in before the next big crossover event.

Does this mean we won't see Tom Holland face off against Tom Hardy? Ehhh, who knows at this point. Even though Feige and Pascal seem to be very buddy-buddy still, I'm always a bit worried that things could still fall apart at any time, especially given how open-ended NWH left things, given that no one in the MCU remembers Peter Parker, only that Spider-Man exists, so Peter's connections are all gone and he could be very detached from the MCU for a while. I am hopeful that there will be another trilogy set WITHIN the MCU, and that we eventually get MCU Miles Morales, maybe even Spider-Gwen, and see what else Sony/Marvel Studios can do.

Honestly, if Sony were smart, other than Venom, they would let Marvel Studios help them with all of their future Marvel films, like Kraven, Black Cat, Silver Sable, etc., just so they can be included in the MCU (especially given that Netflix heroes like Daredevil are now on the table, Spider-Man's allies/enemies are often similar ground-level characters like the Netflix heroes).

- The way those villains played their roles again was great, but Dafoe did such an amazing job with Green goblin. It was better than the original Spiderman (IMO). It was also fitting that he was the last villain standing, given what happened to Aunt May and that he was the first villain in a spider movie.

Agreed about Dafoe, his Goblin was taken to a whole 'nother level in this film, and not having the mask on the entire time helped with that. Dafoe's face is LITERALLY the Green Goblin (sans the green skin), so seeing him get to emote the Goblin's face just made him that much scarier and creepier, especially with his wide grin while being beat down by Spider-Man.
The script was really well written and expertly executed, so the pacing of the film was quite smooth. Even upon 2nd viewing, I didn't feel like there were many lulls or pacing issues. If there were any slower/weaker moments, they were in the first act, whereas you usually see those sorts of lulls in the second act, this film started at a jogging pace, and then kept getting faster and faster to a sprint by the end, and I was happy with that.

The Bad:

- The one thing I did not like (and this is just me nitpicking at this point) was how easy it was for Ned to learn how to open a portal (though he struggle to close them at the end).

I've seen this critique go around a lot, but I think if they explore this issue in future films, then I won't mind how easy it was for him to sort out how to use the sling ring. Maybe some people/families/blood-lines are more perceptive to the mystic arts than others. Ned seemed to believe his family had magic in them, whereas Strange was a medical skeptic, so he struggled to learn at the start because of his beliefs. Perhaps it's all in the mind and heart?

Some "Bigger picture" thoughts.

- I know that there is at least 1 more movie where Tom Holland will play Spiderman in the MCU (based on contract, if I'm not mistaken), but I honestly wish this was it. It was such a great conclusion to his story, and a clever way of writing him out. Bringing him back, even if for 1 movie, would kind of undo what No Way Home set out to do. I'm sure that whatever they do will work out, but just my thoughts.

Currently speaking, yes, Tom Holland is set to play Spider-Man in at least 1 more MCU team-up film, and I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't Fantastic Four, which will be directed by Jon Watts as well. The FF and Spider-Man are well acquainted in the comics, so I wouldn't be surprised if Spider-Man shows up in the first FF film. But yeah, NWH kind of gave Peter Parker a fresh start in the MCU, especially with the final shots of him swinging, it felt like closing the book on this part of his story, but it definitely felt like starting a new book as well. This was the end of the Home-Trilogy after all, so it's nice that they made it sort of self-contained, kind of like the Iron Man trilogy, but definitely less like the Captain America and Thor trilogies (the latter of which won't be a trilogy for very long).

Given that the events of Loki occur outside of space-time, the breaking of the timeline could occur at any point that is necessary for the story. Heck, it could have ALWAYS been that way, considering how What If? begins with the Watcher observing alternate timelines for what seems like an eternity. Perhaps the timeline has always been messed up and we're just now seeing it because of Loki, which is why there hasn't been any TVA interference in the MCU films. I do think we will see some of the effects of Loki in DSITMOM, which just finished reshoots recently, hopefully to include some references to Loki/Sylvie and He Who Remains.

Overall, 9.5/10 for this movie. Would put it at my top 3 just behind Infinity War and Endgame. I'll probably watch it again (maybe on Friday morning since I'm off work).

For me, it's ranked fourth behind Endgame, Infinity War, and the first Avengers, and just above Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Thor: Ragnarok in my S-Tier MCU films.

I mostly have to echo a lot of the comments already made.  May's death was heart-wrenching.  Garfield saving MJ was amazing - and Garfield's expression was perfect... the combination of elation that he saved MJ, and utter angst that he couldn't have done that for Gwen.

I wondered why they didn't de-age Toby at all, but get it now.... both him and Garfield Spider-Man had experienced the events of their movies, so they had to be pulled from their universe's at a different moments than the villains - the latter pulled the moment they discovered/realized Spidey was Peter, and the former pulled "current day" of Strange casting the spell.

Dafoe ... incredible, simply incredible - glad they got rid of the mask right off the bat.  Molina was fantastic in his reprisal.

Loved all the nods back to the Raimi movies.

The mid-credits scene was ok, but the end-credits trailer was off the charts.  I'm very stoked for MOM now.  Can't wait for the trailer to be officially released so I can re-watch it a few times.  Loved Strange's new goatee, and the stare-off with Strange Supreme.

VERY minor nits:
No explanation as to why Peter could control his physical body while in astral form?  I've seen the YT explanations, but thought they could've / should've done a better job of it in-movie.

Why no Wong?  The Sorcerer Supreme is just gonna take a vacation while the multiverse is cracking?

Just how does Spidey web-sling from Liberty Island back to the mainland?

Can't wait for this to come out on whatever streaming platform is gonna get it.  if not for the Omicron outbreak, I'd consider going to see it again in theatres.

So something I saw in a review that I hadn't really considered before.

We never meet Ben in the Tom Holland movies and we just kind of assume the "origin story" happens before Civil War and we all know how it goes so we just assume and carry on. But by making Aunt May the new Uncle Ben, we essentially see that ALL of this up until now is essentially the new origin story. That prior to this, he was a proto Spider-Man and that at the end of this movie, we get our first glimpse of the full real Spider-Man. It's just an interesting perspective that I hadn't considered.

Based on how I understood the events, I don't think Wong knew what was happening. He was on the other side of the planet, he wouldn't have notice random villains showing up. And at the end, I guess we don't know to what extend those cracks showed in the sky, since it looked like it was very local to them.

Plus, Wong was very clear in telling Strange to keep him out of it  :P

We went to see this a couple of nights ago. Really great stuff. The way they juggled the villains from the previous movies was excellent. Willem Dafoe IS the Green Goblin - he didn’t miss a beat.

The scenes with the 3 Spideys were brilliant. Each got their fair share of screen time, and the banter between them was spot on.

I know we love ranking things here, so my Spidey ranking is:

1. Maguire
2. Garfield
3. Holland

I don’t think this movie has changed that ranking at all, but I far prefer Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in this one compared to his first two. Maybe it’s better writing or whatever, but I think he’s definitely grown into the role.

In Civil War, Peter says "look, when you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and THEN the bad things happen, they happen because of you", it was always implied that he was talking about losing Uncle Ben, and since we've seen that story twice on film and countless other times in other media, they didn't feel the need to shove it down our throats once more (looking at you BvS and Martha's pearls). Perhaps, when MCU Peter lost his uncle Ben, he didn't give him the "power and responsibility" line like his variant counterparts got, but we do know that Peter does have some sense of responsibility because you can see and hear his regret in his voice when he's talking to Tony about his experiences being Spider-Man for six months. He presumably got his powers sometime in the latter half of his Freshman year, I'd say around March or April 2016, given that Civil War takes place not too long before Homecoming, and most American homecoming dances occur around September or October. It would also make sense that the upcoming animated Disney+ show "Spider-Man: Freshman Year" would cover how Peter got his powers. Hopefully they don't retread the "Power/Responsibility" line with MCU Uncle Ben because it would kind of undercut the death of Aunt May, in my opinion, but I do think that Peter should be some how responsible for losing Ben in the same way that Raimi Peter and Webb Peter did, perhaps for not stopping a crime or letting a criminal go, who would end up killing Ben by chance. We also know from What If? that MCU Peter had an Uncle Ben (from the Zombies episode), so there is definitely a story to tell there.

Just heard this flick has the second biggest opening weekend ever, ahead of Infinity War and only behind Endgame.

Yeah, it's amazing that the top 3 Domestic Weekend Openers all have Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Tom Holland, and Jacob Batalon. But yeah, I can definitely see NWH breaking the billion dollar mark and being the highest grossing film of 2021 (which is currently a Chinese film that only got up to 900m, so even that didn't break a billion), especially by the end of its run in theaters (which will probably be til the end of January). I suspect the home video release will come by March, which I am eagerly awaiting cuz I want to see all the behind-the-scenes stuff for this film!

Why no Wong?  The Sorcerer Supreme is just gonna take a vacation while the multiverse is cracking?

Yeah, Wong just really didn't want to be a part of it all, but I think we will find out why he was going back to Kamar-Taj, especially with such huge suitcases as well. I also hope we finally find out why he's been sparring with Emil Blonsky, though I think we might find that out during the She-Hulk series as Abomination is set to appear in that show. It might also explain why Wong was able to get Bruce on the line to talk about the Ten Rings. Also, does this make Wong an Avenger now, considering his Sorcerer Supreme status and his contact with other Avengers? I would love to see him in a starring role in the next big Avengers team-up!

Wong was on vacation

I though Wong opened the portal and went to Shang Chi's city, I could be wrong, but I think that's how it will connect with that movie.
He was heading to Kamar-Taj, and I think we'll find out why in DSITMOM.

I am super stoked that they even recreated this:

They also did the pointing-bit in the high school science lab when Ned called out "Peter!" and all three looked at each other and pointed to each other saying they're all named Peter, and that saying "Peter Parker" still didn't help.

One of the big props I gotta give them for this movie is solving a lot of my issues with Tom Holland Spider-Man in 1 movie. Before this I felt he had too much outside help, there were no consequences to him messing up and I didn't get a strong sense of the character suffering in order to help others. This movie did really well in that area IMO. Where we leave off is actually very exciting IMO.

I'll have to see this movie again to get a full grip on it. Some things were disappointing to me because I wanted them to play out differently, but seeing it a second time could change that. Kinda like how I judge new music too early, and then it clicks after a few listens. I really enjoyed the movie. Like really. But I'm gonna watch it again before I give my thoughts.

Saw this today.  It was pretty great.  I'd heard that the bad guys from the previous films were all in it, but last I heard, Garfield was denying that he was in it (liar!) and I hadn't heard anything about Maguire.  So when they showed up as well, that was a surprise.  I was also unspoiled regarding Matt Murdock, so that was cool.  He caught that brick because "I'm a very good lawyer".  Uh... yeah, okay.  :lol

So, a funny, not funny story.

Kim K. posted spoilers on her Instagram and people were upset. One thing I would say, I never thought that "only in theaters" also included rich's people home theaters. But I guess if you have the money, you can find a way to get to movie to your home.

If I were really cynical and obnoxious, I'd say that people who give even half a shit about Kim Karsdashian deserve it.  But I won't say that.

I REALLY want to see it again in theaters. I might wait until the second week of January when theaters should be a lot more empty.

So, with Daredevil and Kingpin making an appearance, do we think we will see them again with bigger roles, or these were just quick cameos and done?

Oh, we ranking?? Let's rank!!

Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man: Far From Home
Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man
Spider-Man 3
The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Also, as stated in the updated thread title, Spider-Man: No Way Home is now 12th highest grossing film of ALL-TIME World Wide (and that's WITHOUT opening in China, and is only the 2nd film to break a billion with no Chinese box office, the first being Joker), and it's also the 10th highest grossing film of all-time Domestically.

For All-Time Worldwide, it sits just between Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Black Panther, though if it continues to make decent numbers over the next couple of weeks, it could pass Age Of Ultron and Frozen II and become 10th worldwide.

As far as Sony's Spider-Man franchise, it is now the 4th highest grossing film franchise (including the 9 Spider-Man films above, as well as Venom and its sequel), just a bit under $165,000,000 from overtaking the Wizarding World for 3rd highest grossing film franchise, though that might bounce back once the third Fantastic Beasts film releases. It won't stay third for too long though, as Sony has Morbius coming out this month, then two more Spider-Verse films over the next 2 years, as well as Kraven The Hunter in 2023, so by the end of 2023, it will likely be the 3rd highest grossing film franchise of all time, though depending on how well those films do at the box office (and I predict the two Spider-Verse films will do REALLY well), it could overtake Star Wars for the 2nd highest grossing film franchise (which currently sits at $10 billion, and it doesn't seem like we will get any more SW films in the near future as all of their projects are Disney+ shows).

Let's hope Sony doesn't mess things up over the next few years! Do I have faith in Morbius and Kraven? Ehhhh...not really, but we will see. I think if they shoe-horn in the Amazing Spider-Man into the Venomverse and have those two fight (so Andrew Garfield can finally fight an alien), and do a sort of Venom 3/TASM3 crossover film, I think that might do super well. I really think Sony could do multiple Spider-Men theatrically and people would be fine with it, especially given the reception that NWH has been getting.

No Way Home
Far From Home
Spiderverse
Spidey 2
Homecoming
Amazing 2
Spidey 1
Amazing 1
Spidey 3

Roughly. The middle 3 are pretty much equal in my mind, for different reasons (Tobey's Parker is the weakest, and I love Garfield as Parker, for example).

No Way Home
Spider-Man 2
Homecoming
Spider-Man
Far From Home

Spider-Man 3

I haven't sat through either of the Garfield films completely.

Finally saw this last night. Feels like another first for the MCU in pulling together those guys from other iterations.

My favourite moments were Peter/MJ/May/Strange/Ned, of course.

Nice to see Tobey Maguire and the other Raimi characters.

I don't remember the Andrew Garfield films well. My memory of them is not positive but he was good in this. (He did remind me of John-Ralphio from Parks and Recreation, though, and that was hard to shake once I had felt it)
Jamie Foxx was cool but Sandman and Lizard were crappy on their first outing and I wasn't remotely interested in seeing them again here, tbh. They also mainly both looked "visually unappealing" to me. (Polite way of saying it)

Impressively hard reset by the end. That café scene was sooo good. The chemistry was amazing. Left me wondering what's next for Spidey and Tom Holland.

EDIT: Random chuckle. Coming straight after Hawkeye, there's a big billboard for Rogers: The Musical in the opening scenes of the city.  ;D

How was it?

I thought it was good. I’m a pretty casual Marvel fan…..I haven’t seen every movie in the Gauntlet of them all but enough of them to enjoy the last few they were released.

I thought the inclusion of the other universe Peter Parker’s was really well done…..but if I’m honest I thought the villains were pretty weak but compared to the villains and the power they’ve had in the recent Marvel movies thats tough to compete against.

The way the movie ended was bitter sweet I suppose……and I did find myself feeling extremely sad for Peter as the choice he had to make was brutal. But I will say that with the power that Dr. Strange has and the ease in which he wields it they could easily rectify any of the effects of the final scenes of this movie in 10 minutes of the next one if they chose.

Finally saw it, I liked it quite a lot overall!

Some minor complaints.... of course the movie had to exist, and with the characters making good choices there wouldn't be a movie, but the entire movie happens just because of a couple of bad decisions. If Peter hadn't screw up the spell at the beginning, everyone would have just forgotten he was Spiderman, boom, movie over. But he screws up, he wants to give a second chance to the bad guys, Dr. Strange manages to talk him into not going through with it, boom, movie over.

I mean, this could be said of every movie, every film has something that pushes the plot forward, but this was just a blatant case of Peter screwing up things not once but twice in order for the movie to happen. At least it's not out of character, as Dr. Strange said: "Sometimes I don't remember you're just a kid".

I also thought the arrival of the two other Peters would have been more dramatic, but well, not really complaining, it could have been predictable and cheesy to have Tom Holland in dire straits and then out of nowhere comes a spider web and tadaaah, triumphant music, it's Andrew Garfield! it's ok that way.

Something to keep in mind about this movie (and I believe Dr. Strange II as well) is that they had to reshoot certain scenes and change the plot a little because of Covid and release order. Dr. Strange was supposed to come out before No Way Home (Initially). Not that it changes how good this movie is, but just something to keep in mind.

Sony just wants us to forget the embarrassing 2nd release of Morbius by giving fans an extended version of NWH, which will mean a 2nd home video release and subsequently more money in Sony's pockets. All of the deleted and extended scenes should've just been on the BD they already released.

It's gotten almost universally negative reviews. It looked dreadful and it's one of the few Sony Marvel movies I just have no desire to see. So I have no clue what it's better than, but I can say that Shazam was wonderful, and Wonder Woman (the first one) had a great first 3/4. And Zack Snyder's Justice League was legitimately pretty good. I just can't see how anything I've seen in the trailers or heard about with Morbius is better than ANYTHING DC has released. But maybe I'm wrong. Guess I'll never know since I have no plans on watching Morbius.

I've seen it. I caught it on a Tuesday showing (since Regal discounts the prices for tickets, approximately in half, on Tuesdays), and I'd have to say, while parts of it were entertaining (but not necessarily good), on the whole, I'd say it's my least favorite film in the SSU (Sony's Spider-Man Universe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony%27s_Spider-Man_Universe)). I would rather watch Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man 3 over Morbius. I'd even take The Amazing Spider-Man 2 over it. Those post-credits scenes really didn't help either, and only confused things a bit more just for Sony to try and rush out another attempt at the Sinister Six on film (which they could've done in No Way Home).

At any rate, it's probably a safe bet that there won't be any immediate sequel to Morbius, and if he shows up again, it'll be in another film (Sinister Six, Venom 3, Kraven The Hunter). Sony has to recognize that their Marvel films produced with Disney/Marvel are the only ones making any real money/getting good reviews and positive audience reactions. If they wanted to keep raking in the dough, they'd just let Disney/Marvel co-produce all of their comic book films from now on, and incorporate them into the MCU. How cool would it be to get Morbius with Blade? Or have a live-action Spider-Woman join the West Coast Avengers featuring Ant-Man, Shang-Chi, and War Machine? Sadly, the only way those things might happen is if Sony just gives up the licenses, expands their contract beyond NWH, or Sony Pictures just get bought out by Disney (which, while interesting, probably won't happen).

Looking ahead, Sony has Kraven The Hunter and Madame Web coming out next year, and after the middling reception of Venom 2 and Morbius, I am going in with lowered expectations for these two films. I think they could be exciting, but I don't want to give myself too much hope that they'll be good. I'd rather be surprised than disappointed! :lol

It's interesting, this. There were similar comments about FATWS too. I wonder if Marvel will explain any detail on this at any point. It feels like we hear about as a reason why recent MCU output has been less great than we might have hoped.

If they talk about it more, would that highlight the flaws, or excuse them?

I would say a bit of both, but really and truly there's no way to know. Feige can come out and say "this is what was supposed to happen". And even if on paper it could've been better, maybe it doesn't translate the same to the big screen.

So I went to watch the fun version yesterday with the whole $3 movie tickets. It felt like a no brainer. Except everyone else had the same idea and it was kind of annoying. Little kids running around throughout the movie, people on their phones, it seems people don't know how to locate your seat. 30 mins into the movie and security had to come in to move people around.

The extra stuff was fun. I can see why it was cut because it didn't add much to the plot, but it does add to the fun of it.

I've speculated that when Electro and Harry team-up, he may have told him who he was by name, but obviously didn't know what he looked like (as evidenced by NWH when Electro was surprised Spider-Man wasn't black).

Definitely not explicitly shown in TASM 2 but could be easily explained away.

I just watched the rerelease of NWH the more fun version, and man, that wasn't fun at all, it added NOTHING to the movie.
