Title: Transatlantic Survivor 2021 - The Band Members - Round 2
Post by: The Letter M on October 13, 2021, 07:24:17 AM
The Band
Roine Stolt
Neal Morse
Mike Portnoy

Round 1's Results:
Roine Stolt 2 (18.2%)
Neal Morse 1 (9.1%)
Pete Trewavas 8 (72.7%)

04. Pete Trewavas

By a large margin, Transatlantic bassist Pete Trewavas is the first member out. Not unexpected to say the least. It did surprise me to see no votes for Mike though, but this IS a Dream Theater forum. 😅

Gotta be Mike.  The other two write all the music.

Would the band with Neal and Roine together even exist without Mike?

Probably not, but you gotta remember that Roine was only picked by Neal because they couldn't get Jim Matheos on board. I think it would've been only a matter of time before Neal and Roine worked together on something, with or without Mike's involvement, considering their rising popularity in the mid-to-late-90s prog scene.

But if you're voting for either Neal or Roine because you feel Mike is more important because he brought the band together, that's your choice. I'm more or less deciding my votes here based on the member's contributions to the band, musically, vocally, lyrically, and just over-all. While Mike is certainly instrumental in the arrangement process, he doesn't write any demos or bring in any original material, and for some fans, his vocal performances are shaky at best (though I don't personally mind them, they add a bit of color to the vocal palette of the band). Neal and Roine write the bulk of the Transatlantic music and are the two lead vocalists of the band, so regardless of how they came together, just based on what they've done for and within the band, I think they're a bit more important than Mike (although he does pick out some good cover songs for them, as he does in all of his bands).

That's a little existential for a survivor.
