Can someone explain this?

SUDO stands for Super User Do -  in unix/linux OS command lines, it allows a user to do what normally only the root administrater can do. So say the system admin is trying to help some other user, and needs to use a command that requires admin priveledge, he can use sudo before the command, it'll ask for his password, and then execute the command as if he was logged in as the admin, rather than a standard user. The joke here is that it applies to real life, and by using it you can get other people to do things they wouldn't normally do for you.

Its a reference to Ender's Game.  Orson Scott Card thought that in the future, blogs would be taken seriously.  Not at the rate we're going.  I love that book so much.  And this webcomic.

The alternate text for that is every bit as scary as the comic itself.

That's what's so great about xkcd...when I get the jokes.  I can be amused while feeling like I'm in an elite group all at the same time.

This is hilarious, and only .01% of the population knows enough about the subject matter to agree with me!

Off Topic but not worthy of its own thread, I have a copyright question:

As a musical theater composer (read: dork) I am currently writing a song cycle.  I want to take the idea behind the choir of angels strip and make that into a song.  Is that infringing on any of his rights?

The new site design is amazing.  I feel it should stay that way.

@Secludedmayhem: Certain prog metal guitarists have gotten away with making songs out of certain Korean comic books, and certain metal giants have gotten away with songs about certain works by Aldous Huxley, Frank Herbert, Coleridge, Heinlein, and others...

You can't copyright a concept. If you're simply using the idea behind it rather than making a direct adaptation then there should be no issue.

Holy shit. The scary thing is it's accurate.

If I really wanted to be a huge nerd a nitpick there are some things I would change about the Lord of the Rings section if you were going by the books.

However, since this is going by the movies it is pretty accurate.

The New Yorker Magazine's Cartoon Lounge interviews Randall Munroe (xkcd creator).

Quote from: https://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/cartoonlounge/2008/10/cartoonoff-xkcd.html
Cartoon Lounge: Tell us a little bit about yourself and XKCD.

Randall Munroe: Well, I draw XKCD, a webcomic about stick figures who do math, play with staple guns, mess around on the Internet, and have lots of sex. It’s about three-fourths autobiographical.
I used to work at NASA in Virginia. It was nothing glamorous; I was just tasked with making code compile for obscure projects, and I wasn’t very good at it. Now I spend most of my time drawing pictures and looking at funny things on the Internet, which in retrospect is largely what I did at my old job, too. Maybe that’s why they kicked me out. I also program, read, and try to get outside once in a while (any longer in front of this screen and my skin tone might actually hit #FFFFFF).

C.L.: You say that XKCD isn’t an acronym for anything, but shouldn’t it stand for eXcellent Kids Can Dance? That would be a good comic (and inspirational for kids).

R.M.: Well, in the absence of peer-reviewed scientific studies of the subject, I can’t in good conscience assert that excellent kids CAN dance.

C.L.: What’s next for XKCD? A book? Television? A second Internet where XKCD is Google?

R.M.: Well, Google owns YouTube, and recently, I drew a comic about an idea for a YouTube feature—which they actually took seriously and implemented. So I’m thinking that maybe we’ll have a future where Google is XKCD. That’s a troubling prospect—every image search would just turn up erotic photos of electric guitars being played in the shower.
I know I should be used to it, but I keep being surprised seeing the ideas in the comic leak out into real life. It’s tempting to just write a comic called “EVERYONE MAIL RANDALL MUNROE TWENTY BUCKS”—maybe it would work, and I could just close down the XKCD store and sit on a beach and draw pictures and make snarky Reddit posts for the rest of my life. If that doesn’t work, I’ll go to plan B: insisting that XKCD is too big to fail, and I need a massive government bailout. If Congress questions me, I’ll just draw some graphs and their eyes will glaze over. The only person who would oppose me is Ron Paul, and I can leverage my contacts in the blogosphere to neutralize him by having his blimp grounded.

I think it depends on what value you use for the pressure at the earth's core, because when I calculated it out I got 3.6 something, which really isn't within any kind of experimental error.

Location. Distance from the corner. The black represents where the ink is. So if there's ink at (1, 1) they draw a little point there on the graph - which essentially makes it a map.

And trying way too hard. Didn't find it funny myself. Not even particularly geeky.

I just checked it out:

[(1.956e9)/(~345e9)]x[(100e3/.0051)/(34e3)] = 3.27

I refuse to do a full error analysis, but given the uncertainty in all of them, I'm quite confident that pi easily falls in the range.

Combining the last comic and a question my friend asked me: "Would you ever get back together with Acelyn if you guys started talking again?" made me have a dream about her. Bawww.

Edit: The Valentine comic, not the Batman comic.

Hey, fuck you. I got a guy running Ubuntu connected wirelessly even though technically I should have told him to go fuck himself. It was definitely an OS issue, too, because he could boot into Windows and connect just fine. Turns out apparently Ubuntu has trouble connecting if it's not WPA2?

And who seriously asks someone to reboot their computer on a no synch  :lol

Yeah, the circumstances that lead to him posting them is of course sad and I'd completely understand if he just said "sorry guys, crisis, BRB, have patience" but instead we got some quite fun stuff to read!

Dang, I wish I could understand this joke. Is there a lot of physics in Complex Analysis? I'll be taking it in my master's program.
Title: Re: XKCD thread
Post by: ddtonfire on January 19, 2011, 06:27:01 AM
No, there's a lot of complex analysis in physics. The wave function has an imaginary part, so by multiplying it by its complex conjugate, the stickfigureguy is removing the imaginary part, thus making it real.
Title: Re: XKCD thread
Post by: Jamesman42 on January 19, 2011, 06:35:31 AM
Ahhh, OK. I briefly learned about the wave differential equations in my differential equations class, but it was slight.

Yep, all you gotta do is know that it's a complex function.

Anything more than "3 + x = 10" is complex.
