Yea I'll join. I've got loads of free time on my hands and nothing pressing that would stop me participating :neverusethis::lol
Most people take up hard drive space for downloaded porn. Rich's hardrive is littered with banned lists. The fact that these lists don't include anything from 2000 onwards, which is most of the music I know, should indicate how ridiculous it would be if I tried to produce a banned list for a normal roulette. That's why I do the RYM approach instead! :lol
In to win!*Really glad you have you on board - so far you're the only ariich-roulette-newbie signed up!
*Finish 10th.
You're all playing for 2nd place, bitches.
:saywhen:
- The one exception is that there’s no maximum length (i.e. you can go above 25 minutes) if you’re only sending one track. And by “one track”, I mean one track, not “multiple tracks but really it’s one song I swear” (Chad!).
Funny how Chad has already forgotten his roulette motto. :neverusethis:

Sounds good, no rush! I realise some people aren't very active at weekends so will leave it open for a few days before we properly kick off. Have had a couple of submissions already to get started on.
Sounds good, no rush!

Sent!But not received...
As someone who spent his teenage years in the 80s and his young adult years in the 90s, I feel like I should participate here. That's exactly right, welcome aboard!
And how does this work? I can sent a couple of songs for each artist in each round, as long as it isn't longer than 25 minutes?
So if you want someone to send some cheesy 80s and 90s rock & pop I would join if you still take participants.

More importantly, you need to HOST one!
Talk about overload, the more I dig, the more I find. I mean, I want to send some fun pop and emo stuff, but there's so much epic classic rock missing from your list. I'm sure the submissions of others will whittle the choices down a bit, but damn man, we all got some deeeeeep pockets.(https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/facebook/000/566/702/3f2.jpeg)
You got a lot of blessings coming your way bud...I'm almost envious.
Sent a band there is absolutely zero chance anyone else will send.
80s, just.Sent a band there is absolutely zero chance anyone else will send.
What decade?
I guess it's time to bring out the hard drive where I have a bunch of old gems that I haven't listened to in a while
If there's still room, I'd like to join.
I'm in, if you're taking any more participants. I'm sure I can come up with something.Yay, welcome to all of you!

Damn. I hope he didn't take one of mine. Lol.
I overestimated how much 80s stuff I'm familiar with, lot of it is from my teenage metalhead days. :lol I have some ideas though, I'll try to send tomorrow.Cool, as I said there's no immediate hurry, I probably won't close sign-ups and first submissions until maybe Tuesday to give more people a chance to join.
if i don't send anything within a reasonable timeframe just assume i'm dropping out due to lack of good picks/enthusiasm 'cause yeah struggling to find anything i'm particularly wild about sending rn :lolSure thing, completely appreciate this roulette isn't exactly tailored to you really. Still a nice surprise that you signed up, so if you do manage to get enough submissions together I'm keen to see what you come up with!
I guess it's time to bring out the hard drive where I have a bunch of old gems that I haven't listened to in a while
You sure that old hard drive isn't riddled with viruses? :lol
Pretty sure Chad is always short. ;D
I do have a hard time even dwindling down bands to send. Lol
Damn just found a few big names that aren't even listed on your RYM. Time to cockblock some people :corn :corn :corn
Yeah I know :lol
Sent anyway.

That'll cost you. No peeps for free.
A very cool side effect of this roulette, I'm digging into artists that I really haven't listened to in decades. Holy shit the memories man, I really wonder why I left these bands idle for so long, but there's always an influx of new music as well, and only so many hours in the day. This is awesome, very glad it's a byproduct of the roulette! I was finding the same thing with that retro top albums list thread, especially once we got into the 90s, I found myself going back to albums I hadn't heard in a decade or more and where I remembered most of the lyrics. :lol Love that feeling.
Thanks for making the opportunity for me to trip down memory lane bud, I was so fortunate to grow up with some really good fucking music man.
(also still remember all the lyrics even after 20/30 years, so yay me for not burning out all those neural pathways with drugs and booze lol)
I'm loving all this hype, let's just hope the quality does actually live up to it!Damn just found a few big names that aren't even listed on your RYM. Time to cockblock some people :corn :corn :corn
You kids are so cute...
You're severely underestimating how deep our fogey pockets are in these generations. We got a ridiculous amount of bands not on the list, it's an impossible task to choose just 6
I do have a hard time:eyebrows:
but I've only outright hated one song

To be honest, it's so rare that I actively dislike something I'm sent in a roulette, it's kind of impressive.
By the way I have a whopping 15 submissions in now. Quality of what I've heard so far is mixed but I've only outright hated one song, the vast majority of it is good and some of it is great!

It's going to be interesting to see if the 25 minute thing has any weight in the ratings. Could go both ways I guess.

With this many participants, I’m sure 25 minutes is a tall order. I guess I kind of assumed more is better (and a bigger sample per artist was preferred), but I can certainly narrow it down for future submissions.
Anyway, the only person who said in the tracker thread he wanted to join but hasn't sent me anything yet is Elite,

Totally cool. We just have to slag Elate (and Sacul when the time invariably comes).

Update from today - I've got Elite's submission, and I've had confirmation from Stads that he will be playing and also plans to send today. So all being well and assume no other late sign-ups, we should be good to get cracking tomorrow with 18 players!
I can only think of one Kiss song I've heard (though I'm sure I've heard more), so if Bill wants to use this opportunity to force me to give them a shot, that's fine by me.Update from today - I've got Elite's submission, and I've had confirmation from Stads that he will be playing and also plans to send today. I thought about them too but thought there is no way that ariich isn't at least familiar with the hits. Thought the same about Tears For Fears.
Son of a... with Tears For Fears.
Do I see T'Pau?You do not.
Kwyji sent Slayer?He did not.
TAC sent Gary Moore
Blood Of Emeralds
Empty Rooms (live)
The Loner
Son of a... with Tears For Fears.
Same... I'm literally listening to them right this very instance! Though, how anyone can submit them without Everybody Wants to Rule the World baffles me.
And I had a post that I neglected to click "Post" .... "I think I see Gary Moore up there, and if so, it's TAC".
The rest of Triumph is:
Fight the Good Fight
Lay it on the Line
Magic Power
And whoever sent them, that's also an incredible set of songs. Magic Power is Top 5 song of all-time for me; FtGF is Top 20
Kwyji sent Slayer?
Kwyji sent a band not identified yet (I'm bound to get it right at some point!)

Been going through some more possible choices this morning, and ffs... I need this roulette to be more like 12 rounds!

Right? I got two more solid rounds which I'm pretty sure nobody will send, then a few I'm bouncing ideas for. But damn, endless options. I haven't even looked at hair metal yet, and that's like a bazillion bands on it's own.

After my past disaster with White Lion, this is probably a wise move. *I* haven't even taken a look in that direction. :lol

Well this escalated quickly.
Two of the Kate Bush entries are Hounds of Love and The Big Sky.
Cyril sent Slayer :neverusethis:yeah i wouldn't send one of the worst metal bands ever even ironically
I considered sending stuff from The Dreaming and The Sensual World but I just prefer Hounds of Love a lot more tbh.Well this escalated quickly.

Oh, the other two are Cloudbursting and Jig of Life. All from Hounds of Love which is spectacular and something I was considering sending at some point.

You consistently send worse metal bands than Slayer, just saying.
I'm interested to see how Slayer do as thrash is basically my top choice for next round.

I stared at that way too long before figuring out what the fuck you did :lol
they play bad riffs really fast and have guitar solos that sound like they were AI generated without telling the AI that melody exists and the vocals are sandpaper coated in sulfuric acid there's literally no positive quality to their music but okay
I'm pretty sure Slayer could be the one submission ariich didn't like.

and this is why i'm gonna do awful in your roulette :jamaritard:
What's the difference between a Slayer guitar solo and a chainsaw?
A chainsaw has more dynamics
Supossedly told by Kerry King himself.
it's gonna turn into a fogey roulette by the last few rounds 'cause we'll all have been playing so long
Is that Operation Ivy?

As a general rule, how well I rate one artist (good or bad) should not be taken as indicative of a whole genre. I'd say pay more attention to the stylistic elements that I do or don't like.Cyril sent Slayer :neverusethis:yeah i wouldn't send one of the worst metal bands ever even ironically

A bit lacking in melody for my tastes, but I found myself enjoying the riffing more than I expected.Guessing this is mine
Wow, so I weirdly hated the first track, but it got a lot better after that although I’m not sold on the vocals. Is this Judas Priest? I always thought Exciter was kind of annoying.

This slaps!
Simple, but elegantly sincere and rather lovely.
Rather cheesy and rather theatrical and rather great – I’m liking this more than I thought I might.
Cool change of pace - pretty sure I’ve never heard this band before and yet I’m familiar with half the songs.

This sounds like the sort of thing you’d send me in a normal roulette, and that’s no bad thing.
Rich? This one?
Very cool, very laid back, pretty nice stuff.
Simple, but elegantly sincere and rather lovely.
Or this one?
Warmth, good melodies and a slight quirkiness that’s up my alley - strong start.
More upbeat than I was expecting - pleasant but a bit of a mixed bag.
Didn’t blow me away but has a really cool fusion of styles that I very much enjoyed.

A couple of weaker songs melodically, but a nice energy and groove and there’s some great stuff in here.

Yes! My original playlist had the studio version, plus Wild Frontier, but it was 25:14 or something like that, so I deleted Wild Frontier and went with the live version, and was still under 25m.

I’m digging the production and the rich sound, but it’s a little… unexciting maybe?

Great vibe, love the sound, but musically it’s not doing anything for me on first listen.

I managed to get into a good rhythm with Friday results in my last roulette so will see if I can manage the same again, although that may depend on how busy I am at work.
I'm going to out myself here, but I have to ask. Do some people really hate Exciter that much? I love that song. However, I almost put The Ripper in its place. I'm curious how Ariich would have liked that song...

Cool change of pace - pretty sure I’ve never heard this band before and yet I’m familiar with half the songs.
This isn’t a style I normally go for as evidenced by an almost complete lack of it in my RYM, but this was actually quite cool.
Not much good left to choose from. Hoping for the last one, but it seems I've stumbled out of the gate..
Nope. :lol It was "Didn’t blow me away but has a really cool fusion of styles that I very much enjoyed."Yes to all of these, although Diego do you want to narrow yours down a bit further? This sounds like the sort of thing you’d send me in a normal roulette, and that’s no bad thing.

I think I can narrow it down to these 4.
How about now?
I have eliminated the ones that I am pretty sure do not apply.

Entertaining enough and a fun energy, but I was hoping for stronger hooks.
I’m digging the production and the rich sound, but it’s a little… unexciting maybe?
Great vibe, love the sound, but musically it’s not doing anything for me on first listen.More upbeat than I was expecting - pleasant but a bit of a mixed bag.

One of these maybe? Don't think it's the first one but leaning towards the second one. Maybe the fourth one though also.
Question for next round:As long as the recording was from before 1990, then yes I'll allow it.
Would you accept a live version of a song from the 70s, recorded in the 80s, and not released until the 2000s?
The second one is Kade's, but yours is one of the others RJ.
Indeed not.

By the way, here are:
Round 1 first impressions
Very cool, very laid back, pretty nice stuff. [Elite – Chet Baker]
Simple, but elegantly sincere and rather lovely. [Cyril – Jim Croce]
More upbeat than I was expecting - pleasant but a bit of a mixed bag. [Sacul – Kate Bush]
This slaps! One of these could end up being the best song of the round. [Kwyjibo – Level 42]
This rocks! One of these really taps into a style I’ve been digging recently. [TAC – Gary Moore]
Entertaining enough and a fun energy, but I was hoping for stronger hooks. [wolfking – W.A.S.P.]
Warmth, good melodies and a slight quirkiness that’s up my alley - strong start. [king – Supertramp]
I’m digging the production and the rich sound, but it’s a little… unexciting maybe? [romdrums – Tears for Fears]
Nice collection of songs, each a little different, some more interesting than others. [Stadler – Billy Joel]
Didn’t blow me away but has a really cool fusion of styles that I very much enjoyed. [Nekov – P’cock]
Great vibe, love the sound, but musically it’s not doing anything for me on first listen. [HOF – The Blue Nile]
This sounds like the sort of thing you’d send me in a normal roulette, and that’s no bad thing. [Evermind – Joan Baez]
Rather cheesy and rather theatrical and rather great – I’m liking this more than I thought I might. [jingle – Styx]
A bit lacking in melody for my tastes, but I found myself enjoying the riffing more than I expected. [Buddy – Slayer]
A couple of weaker songs melodically, but a nice energy and groove and there’s some great stuff in here. [lonestar – Triumph]
Wow, so I weirdly hated the first track, but it got a lot better after that although I’m not sold on the vocals. [Puppies – Judas Priest]
Cool change of pace - pretty sure I’ve never heard this band before and yet I’m familiar with half the songs. [Luke – Operation Ivy]
This isn’t a style I normally go for as evidenced by an almost complete lack of it in my RYM, but this was actually quite cool. [Ruba – Killing Joke]
:corn
Upon further reflection, the majority of those impressions are rather positive.Generally yes, I've liked everything to varying degrees. Nothing this round is going to score below a 7/10.

Hey man. I considering joining, but I figured it'd be weird and difficult since music wasn't even invented until after 1990.

That logic ain't gonna work for me! :lol
Right, I've decided all the scores and have started write-ups. Probably won't have time to finish them all tonight so almost certainly results will be tomorrow!

4. Blind In Texas
5. Sleeping (In The Fire)
Yeah! Bringing up the rear!
Fair assessment. I know a lot of people's biggest problem with Judas Priest is Robs voice. It's a love it or hate it kind of voice I guess.
In regards to Triumph, if I were to send them (which I considered), I would have included Ordinary Man and left off Allied Forces. You'd probably dig Ordinary Man a lot more, I think.
Also the W.A.S.P. picks are odd to me. :dunno:
Same with Kate Bush. Then again, I kind of understand Sacul's reasoning for picking those songs... Kate Bush has a VERY diverse catalog.
And how do you not send Scenes from an Italian Restaurant from Billy Joel...?
Also, fair play Cyril, 3rd place when you basically have zero options of what to send for pre 90s :lolPerhaps he only had one option and has now used it up. :lol
Yeah! Bringing up the rear!I mean, you literally never do well in my first rounds, but then pick up massively afterwards, so I'm expecting good things for the rest of the roulette. :P
Fair assessment. I know a lot of people's biggest problem with Judas Priest is Robs voice. It's a love it or hate it kind of voice I guess.Yeah I can see that, it just doesn't do it for me at all.
In regards to Triumph, if I were to send them (which I considered), I would have included Ordinary Man and left off Allied Forces. You'd probably dig Ordinary Man a lot more, I think.Pretty sure I'll give a listen to all three of the albums RJ sent songs from, so I'll get to it for sure.
Same with Kate Bush. Then again, I kind of understand Sacul's reasoning for picking those songs... Kate Bush has a VERY diverse catalog.I'm definitely getting that sense. I'll give Hounds of Love, but am open to checking out one or two others as well - recommendations welcome (although I should say that she scored below 8/10, so isn't banned).
Fair call but they are just ones that really get me going. Hits like Blind in Texas and I Wanna Be Somebody never really did it for me.Yeah there's always a balance to find in roulettes between what you love and what you think the host will enjoy more. Sometimes I find I overthink it and would have done better just sending my own favourites, so it can go either way.
Middle of the pack, good! It's nice to read that you enjoyed My Funny Valentine the most; that's a beautiful rendition indeed and likely one of 'his' more well-known tunes. I'm a little torn on his singing myself as well. He's obviously good, but a whole album of him singing can get a little .. tedious? He's a fantastis trumpet player too, so glad you were able to appreciate that as well. Maybe I should have done a 50/50 split, instead of 4 songs with him on vocals and 2 on trumpet.Perhaps, but it would probably have depended on the tunes themselves. In general I thought the balance was good, and there was still some trumpet in the vocal songs too.
well then :rollinNo problem!
i can't promise another submission until at least the weekend but i'll see what i can do
Fair assessment. Thinking I should've gone with Hold On, but I can live with the score. Sending shortly.
Fair assessment. Thinking I should've gone with Hold On, but I can live with the score. Sending shortly.
I've always thought Allied Forces (song) was middle-tier, so I was surprised at that as a submission. Hold On definitely would've been on my list, and it depending on time, I would've slapped Blinding Light Show in there if I could. Ordinary Man would've been a priority too.
As for the Styx writeup... I'll take it! Glad it scratched an itch for you. I think I have my plan/strategy for the next 4 rounds all planned out. Not totally cheating, but it lends itself that way.

I thought about Blinding Light Show as well, but the length made it difficult to squeeze in there......

HOF – The Blue Nile
1. Over the Hillside
2. Tinseltown in the Rain
3. Heatwave
4. The Wires Are Down
First impression: Great vibe, love the sound, but musically it’s not doing anything for me on first listen.
Final opinion: Ok let’s start with the positives. I love the sound here, and would not have guessed it was from the 80s. I guess it’s probably been remastered more recently in terms of the fullness of the sound, but the style and the mix honestly sounds not dissimilar to what some synthpop and electronic artists are doing these days. Very chilled vibes and creative use of different sounds and ideas. The problem I had was how little I was getting from it musically. However, I’ve softened on that, and after multiple listens it has grown on me a bit - Heatwave especially did not interest me at all at first, but now has a really nice groove to it that kind of reminds me of Lemon Jelly. So overall I definitely like it, I just wish the music lived up to the production.
Score: 7.4
Depends what you mean by minimalist. I've no problem with subtle and minimal instrumentation - the Joan Baez songs that won the round didn't have very much going on, but they were rich in melody and harmony.--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, the first impression had me fearing the worst, but this could have been worse. They are all about subtlety and minimalism. I could have given you one or two other tracks that have a bit more going on, but for the most part this is what they do. I almost sent one that was even more minimalist, but decided that might hurt me. I guess I was right! They are all about the lush soundscapes and providing a vehicle for Paul Buchanan’s voice. I go through these periods where they are all I want to listen to. Hats is one of my top 5 albums of all time, and A Walk Across The Rooftops is really almost just as good. If you ever get a chance both are worth a full listen.

romdrums – Tears for Fears
1. Shout
2. Mothers Talk
3. Sowing the Seeds of Love
4. Swords and Knives
First impression: I’m digging the production and the rich sound, but it’s a little… unexciting maybe?
Final opinion: This submission is very much in two halves, and I have pretty different feelings about each. The first two songs come from Songs From the Big Chair, and are very much in a new wave, synthpop sort of style. They kind of remind me of Depeche Mode, but without the sense of melancholy that makes their best music so captivating. I love the sound of these two songs, but musically I’m still not finding them too exciting (even though I gather Shout is one of their biggest hits). The other two songs then are from The Seeds of Love, which seems to have a very different style, more of a pop-rock, psychedelic vibe. In some ways the production isn’t quite so interesting here, but the music is fanastic - really richly melodic and with some top-notch hooks, especially in the title track.
Score: 7.8

Harry Chapin. My god, man. ;D
Based on this, you'll really dig The Seeds of Love as an album. I think they're both must own albums, but I think you may appreciate the looser, more organic nature of The Seeds of Love. There's a lot of very lush moments on that album, the middle section of Swords and Knives being a particular highlight for me. Happy exploring!
Depends what you mean by minimalist. I've no problem with subtle and minimal instrumentation - the Joan Baez songs that won the round didn't have very much going on, but they were rich in melody and harmony.
And yeah I'll certainly give a listen to those two albums. I'm going to make sure I check out every artist I'm sent, unless there are any I actively dislike.
Oh, and as far as Joan Baez's Diamonds And Rust... Been listening to the Priest version since probably 1981, but up until a few months ago, I had literally never heard the Joan Baez version. I pulled up this video on youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ST9TZBb9v8
Being written about Bob Dylan, the old pictures of the two of them adds to the song. I think I watched this video every night for about a month after I had seen it.
Tremendous!
OK, so on reflection, and the success of Cyril and Sacul's entries, I'm going to steer clear of metal the next round. I'll be sending later today, 90% sure on my entries at this point.
As a general rule, how well I rate one artist (good or bad) should not be taken as indicative of a whole genre. I'd say pay more attention to the stylistic elements that I do or don't like.

Good lord, Infest the Rats Nest isn't even really thrash as far as I'm concerned. It has a few thrashy parts but I feel sorry for all their fans who think they know what thrash is after listening to that album alone.it sucked either way so who cares :lol
I must say, as someone who hardly ever listens to anything from before the 90s, the process of forcing myself to do so in order to actually have things to send has been enjoyable! Discovered at least a few things I probably wouldn't have checked out otherwise. :tup
Glad you liked it. Killing Joke is a quite new find for me and I'm more interested in their 90s/2000s output when they turned into more industrial/metallic direction, but I've quite liked some of their 80s songs too. I wanted to play it safe though and sent just the strongest song of that era I know. They're an interesting band into whose discography I want to get more acquinted with.Interesting that that's the direction they took later on, sounds like quite a shift although I can sort of hear a hint of industrial approach in the song you sent. I'll be very intrigued to explore their stuff once the roulette is over.

Buddyhunter Fogey Challenge Roulette??
I just think those are their best songs. I did buy The Headless Children when it came out, but I guess I was on to other things, and it never really stuck. WASP, for me, is really about those first three albums. I did enjoy Golgotha though.
Unfortunately that came out in '92, so not valid for this round. But an amazing album nonetheless. :metal :metal :metalI just think those are their best songs. You liked that Jeff Scott Soto album that much hey?
Sent ... using every last second of the time limit. Literally.Dagnammit, we're up to 16 out of 18 submissions now and the average length is nearly 2:30 longer than in round 1, even though there was no correlation between submission length and rating (in fact the shorter submissions had a very marginally better average score). :P
so it turns out i'm really busy this weekend and won't have time to think about a submission yetNo worries, if you could get it to me by Monday, that would be fine!
You can always cut it back to 20 minutes or something mate. That's indeed hell of a lot of music with the amount of people participating.I'll stick with it for now - it's currently working out at roughly the same amount of total music per round as my last roulette (slightly less in round 1) which had a 21 minute limit but more players. So it should be ok, and I prefer not to change the rules once people have started planning their entries unless I really have to.
yeah my submission this time is almost twice as long as last time lolLiterally the shortest so far, with just Elite left to send. :lol
it might still be on the shorter side of submissions even then
Do with that what you must. That's what she said.
I went from 24 minutes to 16 minutes, so there's that. ;)I think I went from 24 to 23 minutes :P
I almost swapped out what I sent for the short versions & threw in a third shorter song instead, which would've been like 12 minutes instead :lol maybe i shouldyeah my submission this time is almost twice as long as last time lolLiterally the shortest so far, with just Elite left to send. :lol

If I went Candlemass too, I would have picked 3 or 4 totally different songs to those ones. Interesting there's 3 the same.I had a long list of songs I wanted to pick from. Solitude, Black Stone Wielder, The Well of Souls, Ancient Dreams, Through the Infinitive Halls of Death, A Tale of Creation, etc.

Linda PerhacsYep, that's all the artists solved. Updated above.
Love the variety - some of it dragged a little but other parts were deliciously quirky.
I rather like this - it’s upbeat but has an oddly emotional edge to it.
And how about some...
Round 2 first impressions
One track was a little bland, but the rest was really nice and that voice is just full of emotion.
Love the variety - some of it dragged a little but other parts were deliciously quirky.
Intricate and kind of dramatic - will take a few listens to get my head round it, but I liked it.
Sounds really good, and cool to hear how this relates to what came before it and after it.
One of the better submissions so far in this genre - very rich sonically and melodically.
Some of this felt a little tame, but I liked it when there was more energy or emotion.
I’ve not heard this artist before but this is exactly what I thought they’d sound like.
Some of this was great, and the vocals helped with the less strong parts.
The sort of thing I’d probably love live, but is still pretty good on record.
My enjoyment of each song depended on how much I liked the vocals.
More interesting than most of what I’ve heard from this artist.

The Cars always seemed to be dismissed as a light-weight band, radio-friendly, synth-rock. But Ocasek's lyrics were always a step or two deeper than they seemed.
I can't express how thrilled I am - regardless of the score I get - that you picked up on the emotional aspect of their music. I don't listen to them much anymore, but they are one of my favorite bands and there are times when I just need a "Cars" fix. It is the kind of music that brings me to another place and time (we used to have to drive to the next town for hockey practice in high school, and when I was a freshman and sophomore, this older kid would let me ride with him because I was one of the few that liked his music: The Cars, Squeeze and Bob Seger. Those were good times.)

The bolded qualities are nothing to be dismissed. If done right, there's nothing wrong with it. ;)
Not everything has to be super complicated prog or niche music.

1. Per uno amico
2. L’isola di niente
3. Grazie davvero
First impression: Intricate and kind of dramatic - will take a few listens to get my head round it, but I liked it.
Final opinion: Here we come to our first non-English submission of the roulette, and what an interesting one it is. As expected, the language didn’t present a barrier (it rarely does, unless it’s important to the enjoyment for narrative or comedic reasons). In the case of this Italian prog band, the focus is clearly on the intricate writing and skilled musicianship. It perhaps borders on the meandering in places, but not unusually so for 70s prog and not to the extent that it harms the music. There’s a ton of cool ideas in here, and while it’s not immediately accessible, I’ve found myself enjoying very much on every listen.
Score: 8.0
Fair assessment. Davies' greatest appeal as a frontman is in his live performances, he literally owns audiences. The two songs you didn't favor as much were actually ones I switched out multiple times, the three you likes were my immediate choices once I eliminated the Kinks' hit songs like You Really Got Me and Lola.See this right here is a perfect example of why there's no need to max out the time limit. If you'd just sent me those three, you'd definitely have scored a fair bit better. :P

Regarding the Peter Gabriel entry, I love San Jacinto, plodding and all. But I'm more surprised by the In Your Eyes comments. That's just a gorgeous recording, and a near perfect pop song. One of the all time great pop songs in my view. There's a Classic Albums episode on the making of So, and they talked about how they had to meticulously edit together that main loop by hand. So much going on production wise in an otherwise simple song.

"In Your Eyes" is one of the few songs that, for me, are truly overplayed and worn out (moreso because of the uses rather than the number of plays; it's very cliched in certain circles) but having said that, if you've never heard it you don't have that problem. When it first came out it was a killer track (and it takes on new life live).
One of the several songs inspired by Rosanna Arquette.

I can see it being overplayed, but for me I've never gotten tired of it, and I've been listening to it since I was a kid. One of the first songs that drew me to PG and it still gets me every time.

The live version on Secret World is the standard for me. Paula Cole's singing on it is magical. Getting to see it live on the Growing Up Tour, with Sevara Nazarkhan singing on it, was equally good. I think, like Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, it's been covered so many times that it loses its charm. The Jeffrey Gaines version is particularly atrocious, and unfortunately, was a staple on restaurant muzak systems in the late 90's/early 2000's.
my round 6 will be nearly maxed out probably but i might have to resort to single songs for the next round lolThat's completely fine if so, there's no lower limit. It'll be interesting to see how your post-1990 average score ends up comparing with your pre-1990 average score. :lol
Alright, so it seems the consensus is that I'm a pleb when it comes to In Your Eyes.
Yeaaaaaaahh, non fogeys represent.:heart
Honestly I wish my Dad was alive to see this. He fucking loved Van Morrison and Moondance so much! He would've got the biggest kick out of both me thinking to even send someone these songs, and that person linking them!
I kind of agree with you about Sweet Thing. I'm not even sure why I sent it as the Moondance songs are, as you said, so much better. I thought it was possibly my bias and nostalgia blinding me, but obviously not.Yeah it's hard to tell sometimes, isn't it?
wait i just noticed a glaring gaping hole in the banlist that i might just fill insteadFor round 3?

yeah it's honestly -so- obvious i almost don't want to send actuallywait i just noticed a glaring gaping hole in the banlist that i might just fill insteadFor round 3?
Fair assessment. Davies' greatest appeal as a frontman is in his live performances, he literally owns audiences. The two songs you didn't favor as much were actually ones I switched out multiple times, the three you likes were my immediate choices once I eliminated the Kinks' hit songs like You Really Got Me and Lola.See this right here is a perfect example of why there's no need to max out the time limit. If you'd just sent me those three, you'd definitely have scored a fair bit better. :P
Alright, so it seems the consensus is that I'm a pleb when it comes to In Your Eyes.
Which, on balance, probably didn't affect your score as the quality of the second half was netted off by the first half.Fair assessment. But on the flip side, if he'd sent the other ones, he'd have tanked! See, I was thinking of NOT sending San Jacinta, so your theory can cut both ways.
I mean, I wouldn't say that should cause you to hold back. Others have sent me really obvious stuff that I clearly should have known but didn't, that's kind of the whole point of this roulette really!yeah it's honestly -so- obvious i almost don't want to send actuallywait i just noticed a glaring gaping hole in the banlist that i might just fill insteadFor round 3?

Which I have done for a third straight round, and will continue to do for the back half of the roulette. I really hope the act I have slotted for round 4 stays unused.

As did I.
PS: In Your Eyes is awesome ;) and as I said before, the live version totally slays the studio version.
I have a lot of good memories surrounding the Secret World live video and record, that have not necessarily anything to do with the music. Maybe it's a large part of nostalgia on my end why I prefer the version.
I've got no clue what you're talking about :lolwait i just noticed a glaring gaping hole in the banlist that i might just fill instead
Is it a band you'd expect Sacul to send? If so we may be thinking of the same band. They're on my shortlist :corn
Candlemass
Crystal Ball

Under The Oak (New Version)
You missed a song...

I did much better and yet I'm even farther behind :lolThat's not true, you're closer to the median/mid-point than you were, and there are far more people within close catching distance than there were. You only dropped a place in the ranking because you were joint-last in round 1, but a strong round 3 could see you jump a number of places.
Sent, but I expect at least one of the songs to be rejected as I can't believe Rich hasn't heard it before.I'm not rejecting any "hits" that it turns out I know. I stand by my banned lists.
Probably a good call, I just watched it now and good lord. :lolYou missed a song...

:lol I didn't mention the music video to Bewitched in my submission, because I was worried it might make ariich take the song less seriously.
It was the '80s. The only way to explain it is cocaine.Probably a good call, I just watched it now and good lord. :lolYou missed a song...

:lol I didn't mention the music video to Bewitched in my submission, because I was worried it might make ariich take the song less seriously.
Well as long as I know what I'm talking about :lol I wouldn't say it's glaringly obvious, but it's a band I know Sacul loves, that have an 80s release. Plus it's a band I know you are at least familiar with Cyril, and I think you like them?Oh I think I know who they are. In that case, ariich didn't like one of their 90s albums very much :lol
Elite – Mahavishnu Orchestra
1. Birds of Fire
2. Eternity's Breath, Pt. 1
3. Eternity's Breath, Pt. 2
4. One Word
First impression: The sort of thing I’d probably love live, but is still pretty good on record.
Final opinion: For my tastes, this is just a really inconsistent submission. I can be fairly picky with jazz fusion (and to some extent with jazz in general), which I guess you weren’t to know. The two Eternity’s Breath tracks are great - great playing, a really cool sound and nice use of vocals and strings to make it all sound quite grand and immersive. I also like how the tracks build and develop. Definitely looking forward to checking out the album they’re from. The other two tracks, I just can’t get into. One Word is decent, although I find it drags a little, but Birds of Fire I struggle with. I do think I’d really enjoy something like that live, but on record it just feels a bit messy to me, and there’s something about the production and guitar tone I find grating.
Sent just this moment ;D
Not that there's any rush or anything, but just as a marker, Sacul, Stadler and Elite have all sent and six of you haven't.

Not me on Elton. I'm gonna say Stadler followed up Billy Joel with Elton John.

Yeah... that Boston submission is da bomb. I was going to do 3/4 of those - replacing More Than A Feeling with Let Me Take You Home Tonight. And yeah, I know the former is their flagship song, but I wanted to go with at least one 'not obvious' choice. Same with Elton John, though I'm not sure I could play him and NOT use Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting

Not to say they aren't awesome they way they are, I would have submitted
Journey: "Who's Crying Now" for "Edge Of The Blade"
Boston: "Don't Look Back" for "Rock And Roll Band"
Phil Collins: "We Said Hello, Goodbye" or "Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away" for "Easy Lover"
Elton is just perfect the way it is.
Scorpions is good too; love the "Yellow Raven" inclusion; I would have put "In Trance" or "We'll Burn The Sky" for "When The Smoke Is Going Down".
FYI, I don't mean to be critical; these are all formidable submissions. Just talking my personal preference.
Like jingle said you could send almost any Journey song but I would have added Faithfully. Yeah it's cheesy and sappy but it's also one of the best rock ballads ever written. And Perry is just jaw-dropping on it.

Lovely sound and great playing.
Round 3 first impressions
Very nice - chilled but with a fair bit going on.
Bold choice to go for a style that I’m not sure has ever scored well in my roulettes.
Talented playing and a distinct sound - this is more like it as far as this genre goes.
Wow, this was quite a journey!

Ima gonna kick myself if Easy Lover is the dud - and it probably is since two songs are very similar in being a drum-dominated sound; and two others are similar with a brass-heavy sound.
But, I'll take it. It was better than some of the alternatives. I'll admit, last night I was banking on getting the impression that Kwyji got.

At least you didn't send One More Night. :tdwn
Through These Walls would've been a decent choice, or his cover of Tomorrow Never Knows.
I'll say this is mine.

OOHH WAH-AH-AH-AH
Round 3 first impressions
Enjoyably bonkers. [Luke – Focus]
Wow, this was quite a journey! [Sacul – Mike Oldfield]
Lovely sound and great playing. [Nekov – Pat Metheny]
Mysterious and eerie and pretty cool. [Buddy – Comus]
More serious and heartfelt than I expected. [HOF – Journey]
Very nice - chilled but with a fair bit going on. [Elite – Wes Montgomery]
This was great - varied, catchy and surprisingly rocking. [Cyril – Elton John]
Wasn’t convinced at first, but this got better with each track. [TAC – Boston]
One possible dud, but otherwise a bunch of good, catchy songs. [jingle – Phil Collins]
Didn’t sound very distinctive, and yet some of the songs were really nice. [Stadler – Billy Squier]
A good illustration of not needing to do anything fancy to write solid rock songs. [wolfking – Magnum]
I can see what you were going for, but it sounded a bit middle of the road for me. [Kwyjibo – Nik Kershaw]
Bold choice to go for a style that I’m not sure has ever scored well in my roulettes. [Evermind – Scorpions]
Talented playing and a distinct sound - this is more like it as far as this genre goes. [romdrums – Jean-Luc Ponty]
There’s something about this that reminds me of what I liked in your first submission. [king – Chicago]
Not the strongest vocally, but the delivery is convincing and the music is mostly great. [lonestar – Pete Townshend]
The general sound and style was cool and dark, but not sure the music matched up to it. [Ruba – Trouble]
Hmm, well, there’s plenty to like but mainly I’m just glad that vocals in this genre have since improved. [Puppies – Dinosaur Jr.]

I see we've reached the Fogey Royal Rumble part of the roulette where you turn on each other, while the youngsters gradually take over.

Wow, besides the fact that this was filmed with what seems to be a potato, I've never seen people fall down so many times just trying to get a fight started... :lol I'm assuming that's TAC, Jingle, and Stadler with Lonestar filming.I see we've reached the Fogey Royal Rumble part of the roulette where you turn on each other, while the youngsters gradually take over.

This is definitely the strongest round overall so far. Average score looks like it'll be comparable to my usual open roulettes. You guys have been holding back all this top notch music from me!

Now you've had a chance to listen to it I need to share this live performance from '73.
https://youtu.be/g4ouPGGLI6Q (https://youtu.be/g4ouPGGLI6Q)
This is without a doubt one of the most batshit incredible live performances ever. They had a slot to play Hocus Pocus on some talk show, but were only given a 4 minute slot. So what did they do? They sped it up to fit the time slot! It's just so good. The comments section here is also gold. I'm sure some of you will have already seen this but everyone needs to watch this! There's a reason it has like 12 million views.
I often show this to people when I talk about music that's out there and 'alternative'. It blows people's minds :lol
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evermind – Scorpions
1. Yellow Raven
2. When the Smoke is Going Down
3. Still Loving You
First impression: Bold choice to go for a style that I’m not sure has ever scored well in my roulettes.
Final opinion: I was a little cheeky and misleading with my first impression, but the style I was referring to was power ballads by 80s rock bands. Chad had a bad experience trying that in a tie-breaker in my first album roulette, and I think people have generally steered clear of it since. But congratulations on bucking the trend! Turns out I didn’t know Still Loving You after all, but it’s a great song and I can see why it’s popular. On the flipside, turns out I did know Yellow Raven, or at least Pain of Salvation’s cover of it. It’s odd to me that people in this thread questioned its inclusion (not sure what it means for me checking Scorpions out more generally later on) as it’s my favourite here - a very emotive and interesting song. When the Smoke... isn’t quite as good as the others (the guitar solo in particular is… kind of weird) but it’s still nice enough.
HOF – Journey
1. Still They Ride
2. Edge of the Blade
3. Only the Young
4. Mother, Father
First impression: More serious and heartfelt than I expected.
Final opinion: Like many plebs, pretty much the only thing I knew about Journey before this roulette was Don't Stop Believin' (the other thing I knew was that Steve Smith is also an accomplished jazz drummer). So I was prepared for a cheesefest, but that wasn't what I got at all. For sure the general style was aligned to my expectations, but I wasn't aware of how sincere and thoughtful their songwriting is, at least based on these songs. All four of these are great in different ways - Still They Ride is delicate and kind of romantic really, Edge of the Blade rocks, Only the Young is poppy and catchy, and Mother, Father has a wonderfully restrained intensity to it that provides a gorgeous contrast to the grand choruses.
Score: 8.3
And to think I had playlists ready to send to you for both Journey and Elton John and decided to go obscure instead.... :facepalm:I love having you in my roulettes, because I never know what you're going to send, and you include some really interesting surprises and curveballs. The downside for you as a competitor is that not all of it sticks, and one or two duds can take you out of the running, but you taking those risks is very much appreciated.
Is 48 hours from now too late to submit?Nope not too late at all, that's perfect (but obviously if people have submissions ready sooner, do send them so I can start listening!).
Hurray! A good score! Shame everybody else got a good score as well :lolYeah a little unfortunate, it was a really strong round!

Sacul – Mike OldfieldFuck yeah :2metal: :2metal: :2metal:
1. Ommadawn Pt. 1
First impression: Wow, this was quite a journey!
Final opinion: Damn, this is fantastic and the best submission of the roulette so far. I'm vaguely familiar with Tubular Bells from school music class many years ago, but I never bothered to check Oldfield out properly. This is just so rich and intricate. Long instrumental works like this can drag sometimes, but not this one. It doesn't jump around too much - the piece has a very natural flow to it - but it's varied and definitely goes on a journey. Similarly, I've heard other works (dare I say, including some of your past submissions) that have also been well-developed and well-produced, but seem to neglected melody. The great thing is that it has that too, and there are so many wonderfully lush melodies and harmonies throughout. Perhaps more than any other submission, this also benefits from the currently-available version being a more recent mix - makes me wonder if I should give other 70s and 80s albums I’d written off another chance.
Score: 8.7
Final opinion: After such domination in the first two rounds, I can only assume that this misstep was because you felt bad for everyone else and wanted to give them more of a chance.
I’m more a fan of Gary Hoey’s cover of Hocus Pocus.

Sacul: Gustavo CeratiI was thinking of sending something from the 90s and thought of him, so why not? I don't expect to score nearly as close as I did with Ommadawn anymore so I might as well just send random stuff :P

2: Puente
3: Raíz
4: Perdonar es divino

No rush, Rich. The Nursery? How old is he?He's three. It's his pre-school year (and we call it pre-school with him) but to other grown ups I generally just call it nursery still, which in the UK at least refers to basically everything before school starts age 4.

Man, all the fogeys bashing the Van Hagar picks.
Here's a hot take. Van Hagar is the only Van Halen worth listening to. And only 5150 (the album), plus a few select songs from OU812 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.
Also I find it amusing that people keep guessing Nick for my submissions. Further proof that we are definitely the same person :corn ;)

NIN is a top 3 band for me, but I disqualified them from my submissions upon seeing the rating of The Downward Spiral. The Fragile is quite different album though.
Also, Nekov sent me Bowie's Dead Man Walking in my roulette way back when. It's a banger for sure.

Interesting choices too for NIN. I would have done something completely different.
Nekov's Bowie choices would have been mine as well if I had sent Bowie. Probably would have gone with I'm Afraid of Americans instead of Little Wonder, mostly to try and fit The Heart's Filthy Lesson in there as well. Outside and Earthling are my favorite Bowie records by a good distance.

I've seen them three times now live, and I'm sorry, but you can do a LOT worse than watching Ritchie Blackmore play guitar for 2 hours while a smokin' hot blond dances in front of him (Candace is flat out GORGEOUS in person, and she's a way better singer live than you'd think).
romdrums sent Psychotic Waltz
I sent something
Nope. I don't think I've heard a note of Psychotic Waltz. To paraphrase a song I did send, "if you're gonna guess, you better start doing it right." ;)
just sent ... and now waiting for the other fogeys to tell me that I sent the complete wrong set of songs ;D

You are remarkably consistent.

I’m sure I’ve heard this before, but hadn’t appreciated how good it is.
Dark, atmospheric - not sure I took it all in on first listen but I liked it.
Quite enjoyable, but I’m not sure it goes far enough in doing what it does.

To be clear, there are 6 submissions of artists I've heard a reasonable amount from before (though not always whole albums). Yours is not, in fact, one of those. This was pretty much comparable to what I’ve previously heard from this artist.

These for the David Bowies, I'm hoping it's the 'enormous improvement' and Nekov gets the 'moderate' one. I sent a better selection
Prince is the epitome of theatricality. In terms of his personality, totally, but that wasn't your impression.

It's all quite funny for a couple of reasons. Can someone give me the sparknotes version of this conflict? Did TAC not want to send Heart or something? :lol
Basically some of us fogeys made a gentlemen's agreement to send pop tunes this round. Tim was gonna send Blondie, but since he's near the top of the scoreboard and doesn't have a set of stones, he changed his mind.
@rom & jingle: nope.

- I've been sent a fair bit of pop already, and some of it scored well. Or did that not count because it was good pop? :P
- No comment on the quality and I can't speak for each artist's wider work, but the fogeys including Tim have all sent me stuff that's pretty equally poppy (EDIT: which isn't actually that much).
@Buddy & Stads: Yep
I think I took the challenge most to heart with Berlin. Probably score a 6,but anything for my sweet Terri Nunn :hearts:

Where were the melodies? Did you maybe load up (Freddie) Prinze by accident?!?! :lol I briefly thought of that impression, but quickly dismissed it as crazy-type. :lolYeah, that would be a strange first impression for Prince.
Looking forward to that V :bringiton:
I appreciate Prince, but I fully never quite understood the hype truthfully.
I fucking can’t stand Prince.

Apparently this wasn't a very strong round.Well, actually the average indicative score is nearly identical to the previous round. But the scores are a bit more squished together, and yes more people are seeing a drop that a rise.
Eh, saw that coming from miles (kilometers? just doesn't sound the same mate) away. I'll make up ground, my final submissions are hella strong.
Rich, just curious, have you ever given a 10 in any of your roulettes? No, the highest I've ever given was a 9.5 (when scoring to the nearst 0.5) and 9.4 (when scoring to the nearest 0.1).
Apparently this wasn't a very strong round.Well, actually the average indicative score is nearly identical to the previous round. But the scores are a bit more squished together, and yes more people are seeing a drop that a rise.
EDIT: There was a similar trend in my last roulette, with scores generally rising in the first few rounds, but that didn't happen in earlier roulettes (which were album roulettes). My hypothesis is that as a group you're not necessarily sending better artists, but take a couple of rounds to get better at figuring out which songs I'll like.

That's true. But your trusted source didn't mention anything about how good the rest of it was? I kept thinking during the titular track "Why don't I just listen to Illumination Theory - at least James sounded good back then"

TAC – Heart
1. Crazy On You
2. Alone
3. Barracuda
4. Magic Man
First impression: Fantastic vocals, I just wonder if I might end up finding the music too tame.
Final opinion: Hmm, well, to start with the positive, I really do like the vocals a lot. Wilson has a superb voice which makes these songs pretty fun and energetic, and so I do like them overall. I’m just not quite feeling the music really. Alone is a very nice pop song, and Crazy On You is kind of fun although I wish the guitars had a bit more punch. Then the other two songs unfortunately I find a little bland - Barracuda in particular is just a bit corny for my tastes.
Score: 7.2

Evermind – Blackmore's Night
1. Play Minstrel Play
2. No Second Chance
3. Spanish Nights (I Remember It Well)
First impression: You are remarkably consistent.
Final opinion: Between this roulette and my last one, that’s now 12 straight rounds scoring 8.1 or higher, which is mighty impressive. This is another great submission - nothing fundamentally unusual but quite a nice twist on straightforward styles. It’s really nice folk music, very rich in melody and sound, but you can also sort of tell it comes from a rock guitarist. Less so in the first two songs, and these are incidentally my favourites, the music is lovely. Spanish Nights definitely sounds like it could have been a folk cover of early Rainbow. :lol But it’s still good fun. The singer’s voice isn’t anything special, but it suits the music really well.
Score: 8.3
Tim should have sent These Dreams, which is actually the only Heart song I like.
I'm actually relieved that Heart did this good. But still salty that Tim put his desire to win above his integrity of keeping to a gentlemen's agreement.
But I'm still salty.
So don't fucking tell me I wasn't playing along.
Probably because I still beat you in a round that I wasn't even trying. :P :P :P :P

Heart is a great send, doesn't surprise me one bit they scored well, and their older stuff is far from pop imho. Ann Wilson is one of the premiere singers of our time, her version of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center was a performance of a lifetime.

+1 to all this. I had Heart on my short list of acts to use in the final 2 rounds. I'm honestly baffled Tim is so turned off by them, considering he's a big Pat Benatar fan. I'm being sincere here... no poking fun. Alone is a god-tier ballad, and Crazy On You is a Top 100 song of all time in my books. That block of songs you sent was classic rock gold - far from "pop-rock".

I'm not turned off by Heart. I've just never gotten into them. They've always been available on classic rock radio, and I've always been satisfied by that.
As far as Pat Benatar, In The Heat Of The Night was one of the first 8-tracks :lol I got. We Live For Love was big on the radio at the time I was really becoming musically aware. So her first two albums are essential for me. I never struck that kind of bond with Heart.
Like I said, once I decided to not send Blondie (which was an easy decision) , I was really kind of stuck. I was perusing year end Billboard charts for the early to mid 80's. I had no guilty pleasure pop styled bands back then.
To play along, I would literally have to grab a band out of thin air. Then I saw Heart.
That was last minute.
I had The Police up and ready to go..
Oh wow, that took a strange turn :lol

Kwyji has indeed unleashed the mighty Thunder ;D
One of my favorite bands, their first four records are as good as it gets.
This is one of those songs that could either score really high, or completely bomb. :cornGodspeed You! Black Emperor
The Dead Flag Blues
:o
That'd be Sacul

I don't know who these guys are but that has Sacul written all over it
They're on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. Cool stuff that I've been meaning to check out for a long time.

And I thought it could be you who sent Robert Plant. :D
I would have thought Kwyjibo sent Robert Plant, since I LOVE Robert Plant and wouldn't have sent ONE of those song. :) :)
Guessing Stadler sent Jellyfish.

I tried Tesla after all the recomendations especially from Chad but nothing really grabbed me. I even picked up a couple if their albums. Maybe I'll try them again depending what Rich thinks of them.

I wouldn’t bother. If what I sent didn’t grab ya then, it prolly ain’t gonna grab ya now.
Heh, I've always found Tesla dreadfully boring, but I've only heard the radio hits and a few other tracks, so....I tried Tesla after all the recomendations especially from Chad but nothing really grabbed me. My opinion of Tesla based on the albums I’ve heard is that a lot of the radio hits are pretty fun, but a lot of the album tracks are pretty forgettable.
A bit disappointingly normal.
First half was ok, second half was a lot better.
Pretty much what I expected, and that’s generally alright.
Some of this was good, the rest was great, all of it was familiar.
This might be the best thing you’ve ever sent me - unexpectedly excellent.
Sounded nice but wasn’t at all what I expected, so I’ll need to listen again having recalibrated.

Ah bugger. Serves me right for trying to cheat. All good, to be fair, KD would be almost a top 5 bands for me but MF doesn't even come close, so I deserve that.Makes sense now, but I guess it was worth a try!
Glad you liked it! I imagine you'll be a bigger fan of the group than me after you dive in. :biggrin:Quite possibly, but definitely not a problem. :D
I think I'm sticking with my guns for the final round. I don't see myself shooting up five spots with the current point gap, and I dunno when your next roulette will be so I'd rather share one of my recent favorite bands rather than something I think has a slightly better chance of scoring higher.Yeah of course, although if there's something else in particular you had in mind, do feel free to send it to me as a post-roulette submission if you like. You might find I like what you send me for round 6 more anyway. :lol

First impression: :metal
Final opinion: Yeah this rocks. It's been interesting to see the reaction to Tesla in this thread, sounds like a lot of people who you might expect to like this style are lukewarm on them. I can't yet comment on their wider work, but this selection of songs at least is great. Real energy that got me headbanging along, top notch performances including the singer who I find really convincing, and crucially some great and memorable hooks. Not particularly unique or exciting in its overall style, but I really can't fault it in its execution.

Final opinion: This ended up being one of the biggest growers of the round. I'm not sure why the vocal melodies didn't interest me on first listen, I guess some tunes are just more immediate than others. I liked the rocking energy from the start though. Not quite the same but these songs remind me a little of Guns n Roses. Not up there with GNR's very best songs, but comparable with the next level down of solid album tracks. If all their stuff is comparable, I could see myself getting into them a fair bit. Standout songs are Laughing on Judgement Day and This Forgotten Town.
Score: 8.1
Evermind gets a v :metal
It's only for 0.1 point :censored
Can't wait to tank next round
If Stadler repeats what he just did in round 5, that could be the greatest upset in roulette history.

I appreciate you liking them - I know I do! - but that's a conundrum for me now. Do I go for the upset, and actually "try", or do I do what I usually do in the last round of these and send Kiss. :) :) :)
Sent. I hope EV fucks up and I get a good score
I sent Spinal Tap so my score should go to eleven.

Oh boy, results are early. I'm on vacation, so I won't be able to send you anything until Sunday at the earliest. Hopefully that's alright.Yep, completely fine - I'm away for the weekend anyway so listening time will be limited until Monday.
Is tomorrow morning okay? I will TRY to send tonight, but I can't promise (what with Halloween and two young grandkids!)

This is pretty peak fogey roulette right here. :-)
EDIT: Incidentally we're up to 15 submissions now, just 3 to go.

Are there really 18 people in this roulette?

I had the same thought. The pace Rich maintained for these five rounds is incredible.
ariich spends an obscene amount of time every week listening to music from what I've gatheredThat's a bit of an exaggeration. It took me around 7 months to work my way through the artists I was sent in my last roulette. But that did total probably something like 500 albums. So actually not that much of an exaggeration. :lol
Man's gonna spin some three hundred albums from this roulette in about two months once it's over, I'm calling it now
That's an insane amount of music to listen to for a sane person.I dunno, it works out at slightly over two albums a day, which I don't think is a crazy amount. I can listen to music when working (except when I'm in meetings obviously), so I can get through a lot.
Sure, but tell me that's all you listen to? I know better. LOLNot all, no, but while I'm working on that as a project, it's most of what I listen to (I also check out new releases and some other discoveries too of course).
Many at DTF have met her.
Many at DTF have met her.
I have not.
I also think of children time and spouse time. Is your wife as passionate about music like you are? My wife is. I'm lucky she loves music like I do. Many at DTF have met her.Nah she's not really into music. She appreciates it but doesn't really pay much attention to it and doesn't listen very much.
My problem is that I need to hear something at least three times before I can form a proper opinion on it. :lolFor my roulettes I always say absolute minimum 3 listens but in reality I've been consistently manging 4 full listens to everything for my last two roulettes (plus sometimes partial 5th listens to help me with writeups). But then I'm trying to decide on pretty precise scores for these roulettes.
I think for my roulettes I usually listen to everything at least like, 6 or 7 times before the results get posted.
For me ... Roulette submissions always got 3 listens before I would form an opinion, and at least 3 more before I finalized that opinion. I can only think if a few times were I didn't make it to 3 listens (sorry Puppies - I forget the song, but there was one that I just couldn't put myself through any more misery than 2 listens).
Exploring music on my own - if I'm not wow'd after one listen, rarely does it get a second chance. There's just too much GREAT music out there to be discovered (let alone the awesome music already in my local and Spotify libraries) to bother investing my time with music that is merely "good" or "enjoyable"
Sounds like you and I have a very similar process Tim.
Sounds like you and I have a very similar process Tim.
Yeah, you just can't save all of the writeups for the very end. It's too overwhelming at that point.
The worst is when I get a submission, and I literally have nothing to say about it. :lol
I'd love to host another roulette, but I haven't been able to come up with a format I'm happy with.

I was actually thinking about that over the weekend. But what? I didn't come to any good answers.
Yes, completely - but I feel lucky that my tastes are very broad and open in terms of style and genre, such that I can almost always find something to appreciate even if it doesn't work for me overall. But especially if someone is sending me something they love or otherwise think I'll like, the chances of me actively disliking it are incredibly low, which is reflected in the scores I hand out.Sounds like you and I have a very similar process Tim.

Just as bad is when you can cut and paste a prior writeup for the new song. I feel almost obligated to put in the time for the people that put in THEIR time to send me stuff, and except in the most egregious cases, I feel personally bad shitting on something that someone else is passionate about. So I feel like I have to find some insight or some angle on the songs even if I don't adopt them as my personal favorites.
I remember the first time we did something a bit like that way back in 2012 when I co-judged with a mystery second judge for the roulette of champions (all winners up to that point).

I really enjoyed the anonymous roulette. I would love to make that part of the gig.
Stadler crushed it as my secretary. I sent him the scores before he could confirm who sent what. It was fun each round guessing who sent what.

Just reading back through the mystery judge roulette of champions and that was a blast. Especially around halfway through, when we got people to PM me with who they thought the judge was, and then in the semi final between RJ and Joe when they kept ending up in a tie and having to have a rematch. :lol

I can only think if a few times were I didn't make it to 3 listens (sorry Puppies - I forget the song, but there was one that I just couldn't put myself through any more misery than 2 listens). That was Cassandra Gemini by The Mars Volta and that was completely understandable because it's a 30 minute song :lol

So I missed that little plot twist. I was strongly debating sending Keane - and would have - but vetoed it because of the year.

Rainbow in the Rose is a great song. I'm not a big fan of those 5 tracks though besides that one. Surrender is alright I guess.
I've always preferred Pull onwards. That's a great album but the last two also are fantastic.

Yep, the first two Winger albums are fun in their own way with some great moments here and there, but Pull was on another level altogether. Kip’s solo stuff kind of followed that direction and built on it. I’m actually listening to IV now for the first time in a while. Kip always says that album is where he tried to merge his classical composition with rock and it just went over the fans heads, so now he kind of sticks to straight rock with Winger. I don’t think I really got all of IV either, but listening to it now I can definitely envision some of the more complex songs on it as classical compositions. Have always felt there was a strong King Crimson influence on it as well.

I struggled with IV. It's very spotty, but a few really good songs. Clover is easily a Winger fav. I just love the more straight up direction they took for the last 2. Loved the more metal Karma too a lot when it came out.

I'm guessing power ballads aren't your thing. Not sure that's correct. But maybe it depends on the style? Ruslan's Scorpions submission was all along a sort of power ballad line, and that worked great, and for plenty of bands some of their slower or power ballad type songs are among my favourites.
And I knew from the outset that Wildside was going to be too rudimentary and not metal enough.Wild Side is one of the "very enjoyable" ones. :lol

Moody and emotive - I definitely like it, but do I like it enough? [Evermind – Antimatter]
Sounded intriguing and kind of bleak, not sure what to think yet. [Buddy – Greet Death]
The music was pretty good, and the vocals added a nice warmth. [HOF – Kip Winger]
Making good use of being able to send music from this millennium.
A little middle of the road probably, but salvaged by one great tune. [king – Paul Simon]
The style isn’t anything special really, but the execution is really nice. [Kwyjibo – All About Eve]
This was excellent - quirky, intense and with some great riffs and hooks.
Incredibly similar sound to another band I quite like, if a little more serious.

Round 6 first impressions
Epic as hell. [wolfking – Stortregn]
This was a lot of fun. [lonestar – Gacharic Spin]
Not sure what all the fuss is about. [romdrums – Winger]
Seems like a nice mix of influences here. [Nekov – Iluvatar]
These songs are cool in slightly different ways. [Stadler – Paul McCartney/Wings]
I like weird music, but I suspect this will be too weird. [Cyril – The Paper Chase]
Really cool mix of groove and a bit of experimentation. [Elite – Vulfpeck]
Some of this was gorgeous, some was quite surprising. [Sacul – Sufjan Stevens]
Grand and immersive, might be your best of this roulette. [Puppies – Drudkh]

So do you like it enough? :)Don't know yet. I've only just started on third listens which is when I make a first attempt at a rating for each submission.
QuoteAnd I knew from the outset that Wildside was going to be too rudimentary and not metal enough.Wild Side is one of the "very enjoyable" ones. :lol

I'm hoping to still manage to get final results done by Friday despite the delayed stay from my weekend away!
That sounds like it would be uncomfortable for both of us.QuoteAnd I knew from the outset that Wildside was going to be too rudimentary and not metal enough.Wild Side is one of the "very enjoyable" ones. :lol
Well suck me sideways!
:lol Apologies, yes I just meant the people who were trying to guess their first impressions. So do you like it enough? :)Don't know yet. I've only just started on third listens which is when I make a first attempt at a rating for each submission.

well, just wait a minute. I'm only 1.5 points behind and not ready to concede!
well, just wait a minute. I'm only 1.5 points behind and not ready to concede!
Man, that's not how it is.
I know I'm not getting first place, but let's see how many more fogeys I rank above :corn
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
romdrums – Winger
1. Madalaine
2. Time to Surrender
3. Rainbow in the Rose
4. In the Day We’ll Never See
5. You Are the Saint, I Am the Sinner
First impression: Not sure what all the fuss is about.
Final opinion: My seventh roulette and finally someone sends me Winger! I’ve seen so much Winger banter over the years here at DTF but never thought to check them out. I didn’t have any particular pre-conceptions, although part of me sort of expected some standard cheesy 80s classic rock. As it happens, this is actually really good stuff. Some cheesy elements for sure, but nothing out of the ordinary in that regard, and otherwise this is just some really solid hard rock with some proggy tendencies here and there. Time to Surrender and Rainbow in the Rose in particular are just great tunes.
Round score: 8.1
Absolutely :metalI know I'm not getting first place, but let's see how many more fogeys I rank above :corn
This is the real win. Beating them at their own game
My seventh roulette and finally someone sends me Winger!
My seventh roulette and finally someone sends me Winger!
My condolences. I'm sorry you had to hear that.

lonestar – Gacharic Spin
1. I Wish I
2. Forever 9teen
3. MindSet
First impression: This was a lot of fun.
Final opinion: Yeah you got this one right - I imagine for a lot of people this could have been a risky submission, but you probably knew it was going to be a pretty safe bet with me. :lol I’ve similarly been getting into a bit of Japanese metal (including one or two of these all-women bands who seem to have been establishing themselves). These guys take quite a modern approach compared with some, and do a great job of blending some proper metal riffing with electronics and J-pop elements. The only thing I can think that would have made it even better would have been catchier hooks, but otherwise this is just a blast.
Round score: 8.2
You’re one of those people I love having in my roulettes because, even though you don’t tend to be consistent enough to challenge for the title, I never know what you’re going to hit me with and there’s always something exciting and unexpected. Thank you!
Total score: 8.1 + 7.7 + 8.3 + 7.6 + 7.8 + 8.2 = 47.7
14th place
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also don't forget about the Nemophila album, more straightforward metal, but I think they got enough potential to break through to a wider audience, and I'll think you'll dig their pure talent since you don't have a hangup about foreign lyrics like some Canadian people I know. ::)Those xenophobic Canadians, right?
i got at least a 7.3 :2metal:

ROUND 6 RESULTS, ranks 13-10
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOF – Kip Winger
1. Kiss of Life
2. Another Way
3. Cross
4. Landslide
5. Resurrection
First impression: The music was pretty good, and the vocals added a nice warmth.
Final opinion: I finally get Winger and then I also get some of Kip’s solo stuff too! I enjoyed rom’s Winger submission, which had a youthful energy to it. But I have to say, this is even better. On these songs at least, he takes a more sincere and emotive approach, and it really works well. I’ve heard him sing on Jordan Rudess’s Rhythm of Time before, and loved his voice on those songs, and I like him a lot here too. From these small samples of songs, I get the impression that his voice and singing style matured somewhat over time. Either way, the singing here, while perhaps not technically anything special, have a lot of feeling and really add a lot of warmth to the songs. The last two, in particular, are really lovely.
Round score: 8.2
You didn’t have the strongest start, but as a newbie to my roulettes that’s not unreasonable. But you seemed to get a better handle on my tastes pretty quickly, and consistently did well after that. Thanks for playing and I hope you’ll join my roulettes again in future!
Total score: 7.4 + 8.0 + 8.3 + 8.0 + 7.9 + 8.2 = 47.8
13th place

Vulfpeck is a beast of a band. I recommend you watch their live performance at Madison Square Garden, it's on youtube. They sound even better live and are just too fun to watch.
i got at least a 7.7 :2metal:
Yeah, two fogies vs two non-fogies left!
I mean I'm gonna sound cocky but this win was long damn overdue. :lol
Also, go non fogeys :metal

That was a good roulette, Rich, especially pace-wise you were amazing. Thanks for running this!
Congratulations Ruslan!
I think the fogey list contains me, King, cheffy-poo, TAC, Stads, Kwyji, Rom (?), HOF (?). Possibly Puppies or wolfking - they're both 'up there' in their fogey status.

36 = fogey? Damn, and I was worried proposing 40 as the cutoff would be too mean. :lol

Funny thing is, my pockets are still hella loaded with solid fogey submissions... Kind of surprised everyone left old school Aerosmith on the shelf, they had some top teir songs before getting sober and jumping the shark.I'd like to think that this roulette has given everyone (including myself) a slightly better idea of what interests me when it comes to pre-90s music, so that knowledge can be used in future roulettes!
I demand a review from an independent committee on the possible influence of putin and the kgb on these results!Stop denying the will of the people!
I mean I'm gonna sound cocky but this win was long damn overdue. :lolThat's not cocky, it's just accurate. After you had a strong start I was rooting for you to hold on, but I wasn't going to cheat in your favour so I was genuinely worried at one point that someone would pip you right at the end yet again. :lol
oh and if for some reason you want to listen to a full paper chase album go for their last one, it's probably the least (?) weird and pretty much every song is a banger soYeah I definitely do, so I'll take that advice and start there and see how I get on.

Ok if I treat Kade, rom and HOF all as fogeys, then I can split you all into two even teams.

So it's very close!
There's a fogey inside everyone of us, yearning to be set free.
it is not super clear to me which of the songs you liked/disliked most from the set but their 2006 album while also fantastic & with probably higher highs is probably not as consistent & has a bunch of interludes i'm not too fond of loloh and if for some reason you want to listen to a full paper chase album go for their last one, it's probably the least (?) weird and pretty much every song is a banger soYeah I definitely do, so I'll take that advice and start there and see how I get on.
Yeah the ones from God Bless Your Black Heart are probably the ones I'm least bothered by. Tracks 3-6 in your submission all have something about them that's really intriguing and were the ones that ended up growing on me, so I'll probably give those two albums a few listens.it is not super clear to me which of the songs you liked/disliked most from the set but their 2006 album while also fantastic & with probably higher highs is probably not as consistent & has a bunch of interludes i'm not too fond of loloh and if for some reason you want to listen to a full paper chase album go for their last one, it's probably the least (?) weird and pretty much every song is a banger soYeah I definitely do, so I'll take that advice and start there and see how I get on.

Tim leads by example on what it is to be a fogey.
If you don't WTF at least once a day, then are you really fogeying?
:lol
I can't wait to bear hug you again.
I am allergic to you, then. :lol
Seriously, how can you love a cat? The only reason they don't kill and eat you is because you're 100 times larger and you own the Friskees.
Cats much see weakness in men because my cats look at me like I'm a money bag, not chuck wagon like you you big lump of patte.
WTF is a chuck wagon?
Um..oh..nevermind. :blush
WTF is a chuck wagon?
So Tim of you. :lol
Chuck wagon is the money maker in the family.
Tim is afraid of cats because he's allergic of it.
He's allergic and old. Lol

Yeah, 37 AND at least be on two prescriptions or more.

Hey, I didn't say yet because I wasn't on much this weekend, but have to say, this is top three best roulettes I've ever been part of (honestly, the only one that competes was TAC's anonymous one). Nice job, Ariich; great pace, fair scoring, meaningful writeups. Loved it, and look forward to the next one!
cats just don't like being treated like dogs and y'all try to treat them like dogs so they get mad at you :PThis. Cats are awesome.
they are introverts and need their personal space, to which i can relate

Nice job, Ariich; great pace, fair scoring, meaningful writeups. Loved it, and look forward to the next one! Thanks Bill, really delighted that you (and others who have commented) enjoyed it so much. While I run the roulettes mainly for my own music discovery, it's also really important to me that the players have fun.
I'll second that. I would have to say that Indiscipline's WWE roulette was my personal favorite, but Ariich, I've always enjoyed the roulettes you've run!Indi's roulettes are pretty reliably the best in terms of totally bonkers fun, and I have no problem with that. :lol
I should run one :neverusethis:
Disagree with the second part, the EP round was the only reason I won. :lolI should run one :neverusethis:
Do it but don't do an EP round this time. :lol
More roulettes plzI'm cooking up a roulette with no banned list. Still trying to nail down the perfect format for it that doesn't make Evermind want to ragequit

Post-roulette updates when :corn:lol Oh yeah.
