Title: What is the HEAVIEST Dream Theater song?
Post by: WildRanger on March 19, 2021, 04:29:34 AM
Which DT song you find to be heaviest and most aggressive (riffs-wise and rhythm-wise)?

The Dark Eternal Night is definitely the heaviest.

The Dark Eternal Night is definitely the heaviest.

That, but I prefer The Mirror. The riff is so simple, basically a single note, but it's a punch in the face, especially when the drums kick in.

I could actually go all the way back to Awake and select The Mirror, but they have indeed made plenty of heavy songs in the new millenium. The Glass prison, This dying soul, The Dark eternal night and A Nightmare to remember are among the first ones that come to my mind.

Honor Thy Father?
I thought about this one as well, but went with This dying soul instead. Honor thy father is fairly heavy, but in terms of tempo, it is fairly straightforward. What puts This dying soul on the top are the shifts in tempo that add to the heaviness quite a bit.

There are a number of contenders, but for me This Dying Soul is the one that stands out.

One of the few of their songs which is unrelentingly and one-dimensionally (in a good way) heavy, from the word go. Straight in with the double-bass and it just builds from there, with the dark, aggressive and percussive vocals, and the riffs, solos and fills just keep getting heavy and crazier right up until the climax of the song, with that insane unison at the end.

TGP is also a contender of course, but even that has more melodic parts than TDS, as it seems that with TDS they really tried to push the heaviness aspect even further (which was the intend behind Train of Thought as a whole, of course).

Also worth noting some MM era tracks here:

-Bridges in the Sky with that grinding palm muting in the second verse, as well as its tense, spidery riffwork in general
-The Enemy Inside has arguably the most sonically intense first minute out of any DT song, with that Nevermore esque flurry of notes being complemented by dense fills
-Enigma Machine just hits you like a brick when those first chords come in and then it holds on that deep groove
-Illumination Theory plays with the lowest tuning that the band have ever had and it has its effect on the song, giving it this really immersive and grandiose wall of sound that gives it that extra kick
-A lot of Distance Over Time could qualify for simply the way its mixed (the crushing endings of Untethered Angel and S2N being notable), but Room 137 has that really sharp tension and release in its main riff, bolstered by the odd time signature and tom-heavy beat, while Pale Blue Dot's instrumental section sounds absolutely blistering with the album's powerful mix

It depends on what one considers heavy. The first one that came to mind was The Enemy Inside but if you're including vocals then Lie comes to mind.

Nah but in all seriousness, I would say it's between Lie, The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Panic Attack, and The Dark Eternal Night, but I'm leaning towards The Glass Prison.

I love This Dying Soul.

It used to be my fav DT song.  The heaviness, TGP reprises, the 'Blackened' section, the Megadeth section, that extraordinary instrumental at the end.  Just a fucking ripping song.  I'd probably still class it as number one.

If The Test That Stumped Them all had Train of Thought production, that may be a contender. Although the chorus is a bit whimsical for lack of a better term, though, which doesn't really scream 'heavy'. I'd consider it a song in the context of the thread question, for sure.

My vote goes to The Glass Prison, because, despite the production not being as thick as TOT, I still think it's the heaviest song. It's got so much tempo and riff contrast in it that builds up the heaviness. The half time breakdown vs. the fast riffing/dbl bassing. JL's singing sits perfectly and doesn't get operatic, which can lean away from 'heavy'. The anticipation building in that song makes the heavy sections THE heaviest in DT's catalog.

Good point. I would agree with that. 'Faster' almost creates an illusion of 'heavy', which can be tricky. If you add a fast bass drum lick to Solitary Shell, it heavies it up. If you add it to the breakdown in Glass Prison, it'd lighten it up in that section.

Did anybody define 'heavy' yet? To me heavy is a combination of intensity, density, destrucity ;D, chord selection and tempo. Somebody with better music theory than me could probably outline it much better than that.

Whether TTTSTA is considered a song on its own or not is sort of splitting hairs, considering that the band have performed it frequently outside of the context of the full piece, as well as both it and Solitary Shell having their own radio edits (not to mention that TTTSTA has its own musical themes that aren't repeated anywhere else in the suite, including its own verse/prechorus/chorus formula). Meanwhile, something like The Slaughter of the Damned isn't its own track, hasn't been performed live independently (as far as I'm aware) and if spliced from its full piece, doesn't have a definitive ending. All this means that many of the pieces in Six Degrees are more likely to be considered songs (which, mind you, is a somewhat subjective term in the first place). Combine that with how the terms track and song are often used interchangably and I think it's fair to include something like that in this discussion.

^This.  The only difference between ACOS and SDOIT is that the sections of ACOS are indexed and the sections of SDOIT are tracks.  The only reason the band separated SDOIT into tracks is to make those "sections" of the "song" more accessible.

Many sections of ACOS has been played separately many times (OIALT, for example) and I don't see people saying it isn't one song :corn

Yeah, hence why I'm saying it's that combination of factors which wouldn't apply to that (like alongside it being indexed separately, having radio edits, sounding like a musically complete statement even without the surrounding pieces, along with it simply being easier to concieve of a 23 min track as a singular unit than a 42 minute piece that's separated into 8 tracks) that leads to TTTSTA being considered a song, rather than just that alone.

My point being is that it's kind of pointless to make the distinction a firm one, because if I showed Solitary Shell to someone and they thought "oh hey, that's a nice song" after it ends, I'm not really going to feel compelled to "correct them", because that's just how it sounds in its own context, while many other mid-epic movements would probably sound a bit incomplete and less song-like. I mean hell, the definition of a song is "a usually short piece of music with words that are sung", which could easily fit the bill here. There's also nothing stopping these parts from being both movements of a larger song and songs themselves at the same time, either.

Anyway, to get away from the pedantry and back on the topic, some extra mentions could be Light Fuse and Get Away (if properly rerecorded, that verse riff would hit so hard) and Caught in a Web (easily some of James' most aggressive vocals)

I do. But that section is like 45 seconds long, and the song is just under 11 and a half minutes in total. I felt the impact of my post might have been lessened somewhat if I had mentioned that part. :)

But anyway, even taking that part into account I think most of what I said holds up. And anyway, although the dynamics of that part are certainly much quieter than the rest of the song, I certainly wouldn't describe it as mellow. Both the music and lyrics of the first verse still have a dark, brooding and ominous feel to them.

So for my money it would still be the heaviest song Dream Theater has ever done. I guess technically it would have been more accurate for me to say that it is almost entirely one-dimensionally heavy, but hey-ho.

That's true and by the same token, TGP also has that opening minute or so of buildup before it kicks in with something heavy, so that could still give TDS an edge an that regard.

Ugh. Yea. Is it too late to stop? Any go backsies? Can we all agree that nobody is changing anybody's opinion on this and either: 1. move it to the Political side of the forum or B. just forgettaboutit?

No, please don't.  We don't want to upset the pleasant cameraderie of the gun, healthcare, Trump and racism conversations.  :) :) :)

I can't even have that place in my peripheral these days. It's like a plane crash. You just can't look away once you've seen it.

I'm sticking with The Glass Prison on this one. After sleeping on it, I think TGP is the heaviest DT song.

Maybe we need a new subforum: The 'Do the individual parts of Six Degrees count as songs?' Forum, access by request only. :D

Back to the topic at hand, my first thought upon seeing the title was something off ToT just because it's an album full of nothing but heavy songs (and Vacant.) But on closer inspection, The Mirror and The Test that Stumped them All put up some stiff competition. I think Mirror could be heaviest if not for the production, it's just a little less 'dense' than some of the later albums and that makes it feel less heavy somehow, maybe.

I must admit I'm very interested to re-listen to the Breaking the Fourth Wall version of the Awake songs to see how the heaviness comes across in them. Even in the studio version of The Mirror though, that guitar has a lot of bite and aggression to it.

For me it's the Glass Prison and the reason is simple. It's consistent through out in it's heaviness and the energy keeps going strong especially in the instrumental section. It doesn't mess around and I still wonder why it's not a tour list staple for the band anymore.

My best guess is simply because it's such a technically demanding song, even by DT standards, and as you alluded to it simply doesn't let up throughout its nearly 14 minute length. In particular, JP has made no secret about the fact that he finds the arpeggios part especially difficult to perform live, and giving the perfectionist he is I can imagine he would rather not play the song at all rather than play it without nailing that part, or having to use sweep-picking in order to "cheat" his way through. But if that is the reason, I can't imagine that they wouldn't be able to find a way round that now, especially given that nowadays they play to click tracks and no longer have to worry about MP nudging the tempo above a comfortable pace!

Personally I agree with you, that song is an absolute beast and it always slayed live when they played it in the past (the Gigantour 2005 performance of that song is one of my favourite DT live moments ever), and I'd be really curious to see how Mangini would approach the drum parts. It's one of two songs that I sorely miss being performed live and I feel are long overdue for a comeback, the other being The Killing Hand.

If anyone here is on cameo and feels like spending a few bucks, please ask MP if SDOIT and ITPOE are full songs or not and put that debate to rest :lol

It definitely has some extremely heavy parts, but that lengthy "Beautiful Agony" section kind of disqualifies it for me.

Yeah that thought crossed my mind too. But it’s only about a third of the song. And it has the first blast beat which definitely qualifies it for me.

Well, yeah, that's my point.  In the category of "heaviest", this song is 33% not heavy.

The other 66% is, of course, definitely heavy.

That actually reminds me how wild a song ANTR is. While yes, it does have that Beautiful Agony midsection that's like 3 or 4 mins iirc, not only is it monumentally heavy for about 10 or 11 minutes (excluding the piano intro/outro), but each side of that is also unrelentingly dark as well. During that time, it might very well be heavier than most of TDS and TGP too. Maybe that's why people tend to get fatigued with that track, because it's one of those tracks that can be so intense for so long (I think the only reason isn't referred to as an epic is that TCoT eclipses it in length) that it borders on being a test of stamina. Even if it doesn't have the status of heaviest DT song absolutely (which imo it's in the runnings still), it's notable for being that heavy for that long.

I think ANTR a notable inclusion to this discussion. It is surely one of their heaviest songs, even the middle section is heavy, the verses in Beautiful Agony, especially the 2nd one, seems to get overlooked by the main theme/chorus of that section. Understandably so, as that is arguably the highlight of the entire piece. Even the initial transition into the BA section is heavy, despite the distorted guitars going clean. You don't need distortion on an electric guitar to be heavy.

This highlights how diverse of an album Octavarium is stylistically. Panic Attack and The Answer Lies Within are on the same album.

Idk if you’re referring to one of the songs or both of them, but I absolutely ADORE Panic Attack. TALW, I mean I like it, but it’s definitely in the lower half of their discography.

For me, The Mirror is the heaviest. That nasty riff with JLB's screeching vocals are definitely heavy. Not heavy in a show-off metal way, but musically very heavy.

JLB's vocals on that album seemed forced to me and in fact so much so that fans thought that DT had changed singers. I've always wondered if one of he was pushed towards this style of vocalization.

I know the wiki says "The popularity of alternative metal and groove metal meant that the band's record label, East West, were keen for the band to create a heavier, darker album" and I remember seeing something like that in the Lifting Shadows book too. I still think the album feels genuine, but at the same time, there was probably a bit of label nudging here and there as well.

JLB talks about it in a recent interview with Peter Orullian on youtube. IIRC, he said he developed this style on tour and, in the recording sessions, KM encouraged him to go for it.

Raw Dog

+1

It really is a heavy song. And arguably could very well be their heaviest song.

I remember when they were touring with Iron Maiden and we came up with what we think there setlist will be and I remember picking Raw Dog.

The coolest thing I did though that made me notice how heavy it is was crossfading These Walls ending chord to transition into Raw Dogs opening chords. It works well, and really showcases how intense and heavy Raw Dog is...

Although, it's obviously a song they wrote on a whim and one that I would really consider a filler song, one that the band wrote because the label wanted them to write a song.

Has to be mentioned - The production on BSCL gives ANTR a bit of an unfair handicap. That song slaps live.

But still... probably Glass Prison

Surprised that A Nightmare To Remember didn't get 100 mentions immediately. Yes, it has that mellower part in the middle, but it also has some of DT's heaviest parts (pseudo-growl, blastbeat, a lot of double, 7-string guitar).

To me probably Honor thy Father, for the emotions involved due to Portnoy growing up as a kid.

But in a strange way, I'll vote for Space Dye Vest as well. Moore's deeply desire, mixed with an psychodelec Pink Floyd-style and dark, lost mindset underneath, makes it truly beautiful, but heavy as well.
