Do you think they were listening to a lot of Bad English when they wrote the intro to Surrounded? Same key, similar riffs, etc. I mean the similarities kind of end there but anytime I hear the beginning of When I see You Smile I think Surrounded
-
I have no idea what the answer to the question is (except that it probably only applies to KM), and I don't think I've heard that Bad English song before today, but those are REALLY similar. I even started singing the Surrounded lyrics over the BE song, and it worked until the modulation.

Hmmm, I never caught that, but I don't think I've listened to that Bad English song in 30 years.
The similarity to the beginning of Queen's Father to Son is pretty obvious as well:

But let's face it, this thread could be 33 pages long if we start pointing out every DT song that has a riff or melody that sounds like a song that pre-dated theirs. :lol :lol

Did anyone else hear the similarities between On the Backs of Angels and Pull Me Under, or is it just me?
-
Given the fact that western music consists of exactly 12 tones, I think the odds of similarities popping up in various songs are very high. I think you can put on almost any popular music song released in the last 75 years and probably find similarities with multiple other songs. It's inevitable and even more so in the age of streaming and the internet.

You may have been the one that pointed this out year's ago, and 'kudos' for that. I hadn't made that connection. 'Procession/Father to Son' is in a tie with BoRhap as my favorite Queen 'song'. Timeless.

I always wonder who made the executive decision to lift the entire intro from Father To Son. It's not MP, since he never talked about it.

Yep that’s true

I think the last time I heard When I See You Smile was when I danced with Casey Acker at a middle school dance in 1989. I thought I caught her off guard when I asked her to dance. I later found out she was interested in me, which caught me off guard, since I didn't think I had a chance with her. Alas, nothing developed.
It's not MP, since he never talked about it.
This made me chuckle.

What about Symphony X's Through the Looking Glass? https://youtu.be/LF63a0xEK00

I was just gonna say that :lol It seems like this intro is like a running gag in rock music...

I was curious as I had never heard that song. That song is awful haha!
The only similarity I can find is that they both open with super cheesy adult contemporary parts. However, Bad English keeps that going through the entire song whereas Dream Theater uses that to juxtapose a great guitar melody from Petrucci leading into and a Marillion like riff.
If anything is similar to Surrounded IMO its Marillion.

That's a great song. It's 80's to be sure, but it was a big song at the time. I'll have to listen again for the "Marillion".
The real connection though, is what Mora pointed out: Father To Son.

I would suspect that When I See You Smile (which is a pretty good song) had no bearing on Surrounded.

Let's be honest, there's some good stuff on Paradise Lost too!

Paradise Lost is better than all but one of their albums :corn

Thanks for the suggestion. Body And Soul comes off of the shelf next.

Hmmm, because the probability of certain sections of songs sounding similar to others is highly unlikely. That hardly ever happens. :lol :rollin :lol
