Title: Heretic's Song Roulette 2 - ROUND 2 RESULTS ARE FINALLY IN!
Post by: Heretic on August 13, 2020, 11:51:45 PM
Heretic's Song Roulette v2
---

Alright, I haven't done this since like, 2013, so I'm a little rusty.

Submissions:

Send me two songs from a particular band. Try to pick two songs that give a good idea of the band's overall sound -- and maybe choose two different dualities of their sound as well -- for example, if they play death metal, maybe an crushingly heavy song, paired with one more melodic, or acoustic.  Any track length is fine.

I am subscribed to both Spotify and Apple Music (thanks Verizon), and also can utilize Youtube or Bandcamp as well if that is necessary. Sailing the seven seas is also an option if something is just absolutely unattainable without it. :yarr

Sign-ups:

I really dug Rich's format of no eliminations, so I'm going to borrow that. Everyone will have a chance at winning, with a points-based system. Each song will be scored 1-5, so points will be tallied up that way. The one with the highest point total at the end, obviously, will win. Bold, I know. I am also allowing any number of participants -- I would love to discover some new favorites, so come one, come all. I will keep sign-ups open for at least a couple of days, and hopefully I have a solid number of participants by then.

Schedule:

After sign-ups, I'd like to try and stay on a week-based schedule. Have everyone send their tracks within 3-4 days, give me the rest of the week to listen and write-up my conclusions, and then post the results and do it all again. However, this is my first semester teaching a college class as an adjunct professor, and it can be pretty stressful, so I might have to bump that up a bit. We will see. If you guys have any recommendations on how you'd like to see the roulette scheduled, let me know, I'm open to doing this so everyone can have fun and hopefully discover some new music themselves!

Overall there will be 8 rounds, something that I've seen a few others do, and it seems to work quite well.

Musical taste and interest:

Sputnikmusic says I've rated 1112 albums, so a decent chunk. If it's progressive, or if it is metal, chances are I might have heard of it. Take a look at the link to my Sputnikmusic profile below, and see if I've rated or listened to something before sending (if you do send something that I've rated / heard but is not on the banned list below, that is fine by me -- it means I probably need to give the artist a second chance. I've only chosen artists to be banned that I have great familiarity with their work.) My favorite music usually has one of three things: outstanding melody, powerful composition, or is evocative of emotion.

My music taste is pretty open. My favorite genre is, of course, progressive metal, but I am absolutely a sucker for melodic black metal and melodic death metal, as well as folk metal, post metal, and thrash. I also absolutely adore post-rock, and hip-hop and indie are genres that I love quite a bit as well. I've recently really gotten into some synthwave / dreamwave stuff like The Midnight, Gunship, and FM-84, so anything along those lines will probably really resonate with me. I am not a fan of grindcore, and hardcore really varies -- some stuff I enjoy, but nothing really has wowed me. I am really not a fan of most country music (some of the old OLD country stuff is okay, not the newer pop-country blend that permeates the airwaves).

I also am usually more of a fan of modern stuff -- not many of my favorite bands come from a time before the 90s, despite really enjoying some classic work. However, feel free to try and persuade me to enjoy an older sound if you'd like. Also, free to submit something you think might go AGAINST my taste, if you think there is a potential for changing my outlook of that genre, or just maybe it stands out enough from the genre that I'll like it.

SPUTNIKMUSIC list of album's I've rated: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/uservote.php?memberid=1044258

I've also bolded and italicized the artists on the banned list who are among my absolute favorites, so you might be able to come up with something based off of that.

So glad you're competing in this! And yeah, happy to be posting a bit more as well -- I was starting to miss this place. Current-day social media is a huge bummer, honestly. Forums have a certain charm and community aspect to them that Discord, Facebook, Reddit, etc. just don't seem to have.

I wasn’t going to do two of these at once, but I think I can swing the two song only format and I have at least one pre-1990 band to send that I think you’ll like.

It's been a long time since I've played in a roulette, mainly because my artist list is so much shorter than most DTFers'. This one I think I can swing, so I'd like to join if you'll have me!

I mean, I’m just writing down my thoughts and takes on a piece of music someone sends me. Shouldn’t really matter when that is done? I like to do it while I’m listening to the track so my take remains fresh. If that’s an issue with people, I can do it all at once in future rounds, I guess.

i think the concern is more over "have you listened to the songs enough to form a solid opinion on them"
that's what i'm worried about too, to be fair.

My methodology so far has been to listen to both tracks, take notes on what I like / dislike, move on to something else, and then come back, listen again, and do a writeup from there. I feel like 2 listens is good enough for me to decide what I feel are the strengths and weaknesses in a piece, though I do admit that there have been artists who have grown on me over time. That being said, I probably don't have the time to listen to a track 10+ times like I have in the cases where things have grown on me.

As for time limits, I really don't mind anything haha. A lot of my favorite tracks are 20+ minutes.

Post by: Crow on August 17, 2020, 02:31:16 PM
yeah i don't think anyone is expecting 10+ listens  :lol for me i used to do 5 but switched to 4 in my last roulette and didn't really notice a difference in my opinions, i think 3 could be sufficient in some cases but 1 or 2 feels like a little too few to me. i dunno how many shadow and ariich and dacul and all are doing for their roulettes in the 20-min playlist style though

2 listens seems really low to me but some people absorb music faster than others. I don't do write-ups until I'm 100% familiar with the song which can sometimes take like, five listens or more. And even then sometimes I'll look back on the score I gave something and think to myself "man, why the hell did I rate it that?" :lol

Yeah, the last roulette I did had a decent few more songs, so I was basing it off of that, but I can probably manage to give every track at least 4 listens I suppose. I've definitely somewhat shifted my opinion before once things have grown on me, but for the most part, an initial impression tends to stick for a while, at least in my case. It's also different with a few songs vs. an album, too, because a lot of times I might not really find one particular song to be something outstanding, but the overall atmosphere of an album can be.

Yeah, I think it's fine as long as you're consistent and giving every song a fair shake. Some things do grow on you, but on the other hand you can't let the rounds take forever.

I've been doing 4 listens in mine, btw. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday during work in the day and then once more on Saturday while I do the writeups. Seems to work pretty well so far.

If it makes any difference, my roulettes have been 3-4 listens, where essentially the ones that get a fourth listen are those where I find it harder to decide how much I like it and therefore what score it should get. In a lot of cases I find 3 listens to be enough. Sometimes even after 4 listens I'm not that confident but at that point I just have to go with whatever I'm feeling as too many extra listens would feel unfair.

I've always found that works really well for me. I find it a fair balance between wanting a similar number of listens to everything, but not needing it to be identical and allowing myself an extra listen where there's more to take in or I can't decide what I think of it.

In my latest roulette, using the same format as Rich did, I would run through the complete list one time, then I'd do one of two things: either return immediately to the artists that caught my attention or interest the most and play those through several times each before working my way through the rest, or I'd just pick groups at random and give them a few spins each which would amount to an hour or two at most on any one submission in a given day. Then I'd play them randomly throughout the week, and have them on one final time while I did writeups. Each day was kind of a different thing.

Yeah, and there's a pretty big difference in a song that's 4 minutes long, and one that is 21. That's just a lot more music to digest.

That being said, four seems fair to me, and though I'd love to spend longer with the music (and listen to the entirety of the albums these songs are from) it would make the roulette a lot longer.

I have always done 4 listens. But I generally take longer to wrap my head around a piece of music than a lot of people here seem to. I'm fine with whatever a roulette host considers sufficient to give a thoughtful hearing to all the songs.

Oh, also, everyone has submitted their songs, so I'm off to try and digest everything! All of the tracks I've listened to so far have actually been quite great, so there's going to be a lot of fine margins for this round I'd imagine, hahah. Hopefully I can have a writeup posted tomorrow or the next day.

That's a reasonable mistake, since the album title comes from its lyrics! I'd definitely agree with choosing TPATP as the best song on that album. I just wanted to show off a different side of the band, which is why I went with The Islander to pair with what I agree with most people is the clear best Nightwish choice.

I am definitely not a black metal person, but I liked these songs better than I like most black metally things. Things were decently melodic and there were a number of interesting sections. I thought the folk element was a nice touch without being overbearing or jarring. If I ever become interested in spending more time with the genre, this band seems like a good place to start. Good atmosphere, good sense of progression over the course of these long tracks.

I wasn't as crazy about this. I thought the second song was decent, definitely had its moments, including some strong vocal ones. But I am sensitive to lyrics sometimes and I really hated the ones on the first song. This is probably good for someone who's into hardcore-ish stuff, but that's not really my bag most of the time.

Title: Re: Heretic's Song Roulette 2: This Time It's Personal - ROUND 1 RESULTS!
Post by: Heretic on August 21, 2020, 11:16:49 PM
Alright lads, here's the results. A lot of strong contenders this round -- and if your track didn't rank quite as highly as you expected, there's still a shit ton of rounds to go :heart

ROUND ONE

---
The Plot in You: Pillhead / Better Vibes
Shadow Ninja 2.0

The first song started off a bit cringy for me, but the vocals kept building in a way that reminded me of Silent Planet, a band I quite enjoy. I was a fan of how the intensity seemed to be building, but then it would kind of disappear -- it was very erratic and didn't seem to have a consistent sound throughout, but it was definitely engaging overall. Despite that, it didn't strike me as something I'd want to add to my collection, but thankfully the next song improved upon that impression! 2.5/5

Better Vibes really lived up to its namesake because it certainly had an improved vibe throughout. The melodic elements were very welcome - was more reminiscent of post-hardcore. The melodies were quite catchy, and the general atmosphere of the song was excellent. I quite liked this one. 3.75/5
---

Caligula's Horse: Graves / Salt
ariich

I am only somewhat familiar with Caligula's Horse, having listened to a couple of their songs on the fringe, and their most recent album a record one time. I must admit it was not a super thorough listen, as I was working while listening to it, so this was a good chance to reacquaint myself with their sound. The first song "Graves" you described as one of their best songs, and an epic, so I was unquestionably interested to see how this one would pan out.

Overall, it was very melodic, so already a positive. The instrumentation was quite well-done, with the part around 5 minutes in being utterly fantastic. The one thing that was a bit off-putting, which I assume was my original issue with CH, is the vocalist doesn't really stand out -- his voice is solid, but it doesn't amaze me in the way that Tommy Karevik or OG Labrie or even Spencer Sotelo (I know some may disagree with this :D) does. The chorus was not quite as explosive and catchy as I felt the song was begging for, either. Despite that -- I absolutely ADORED the section around 6:50, and you knowing my immense love of Haken's a capella and multiple harmonies sections might have given you favor in that regard. Regardless, the vocals were certainly not that big of a detriment overall, because the song had solid transitions, excellent rhythm, and it left a very positive impression on me. 4/5

"Salt" started out with a beautiful piano intro, and then transitioned into a section that sounded like it could be right at home on Haken's Visions. The vocals were better on this for me than the previous song as well, perhaps the melodies suited him better? I wanted to start singing the intro to a couple times, so I understand the Haken comparisons. The section around 3:30 where the song slows down was a genuinely nice touch, and the melodies here were quite strong. A really solid song overall, one I actually have heard before, but didn't really recall. Makes me want to revisit their discography. 4/5

Moonsorrow: Jumalten Aika / ruttolehto Sis Paivattoman Paivan Kansa
Buddyhunter1

Interestingly enough, I have listened to Moonsorrow before, but only here and there. I figured their sound would be one I enjoyed, and I honestly expected someone to send them at some point during the roulette anyways, haha!
The first track was a pretty standard black/folk metal combo, with excellent riffs, a nice woodlands atmosphere, and powerful harsh vocals that fit the instrumentation quite well. I loved how suddenly the harsh vocals came in after the intro, and the composition of the song, despite being long, was interesting enough to keep me engaged throughout its runtime. 4/5

The second track was pretty much in the same vein for me, but they definitely have a sound that they stick to, so it wasn't really anything detrimental. I enjoyed the listen for this one, but by the end of the track I couldn't really emphasize one part that really caught my attention or had me absolutely floored. Despite that, it was an enjoyable black metal affair, and I definitely need to become more acquainted with their music. 3.5/5
---

Monica Heldal: Boy from the North / Follow You Anywhere
The Walrus

The first song, "Boy from the North," truly had some gorgeous melodies. Monica's voice isn't one that I typically enjoy, but it wasn't too grating for me, it rather fit the tone fairly well. I didn't like it as much when she increased her volume -- I felt like the more quiet, softer tonality fit her voice a lot better. The instrumentation was excellent, and the overall atmosphere of the song had a bit of a "campfire" feeling to it, so it felt somewhat nostalgic. Definitely quite a beautiful song, though, and definitely not something typically up my alley, so kudos for that. I felt like it ended up overstaying its welcome a bit, though -- I would have ended it at around the three-minute mark personally. 3.5/5

"Follow You Anywhere" continues in the same vein, being mostly acoustic and containing some lovely melodies. Again, the vocals don't suit my taste very well, and I felt like the lyrics here were a bit weaker than in "Boy." Overall, the more positive tone to the song paired with the once-again solid instrumentation made it an enjoyable, if rather forgettable, listen. 3/5
---

Sweet Billy Pilgrim: Just Above Midtown / A Shelter of Reeds
HOF

"Just Above Midtown" started off with quite a nice groove, and that continued throughout the track. The melodies were strong, and overall, it just felt very eclectic and unique. Really loved the occasional piano chords in the background. Overall an enjoyable, exciting, catchy track. Awesome. 4/5

"A Shelter of Reeds" started off quietly, piano chords played somberly in the background. The female vocalist did not add much to the song for me -- I really enjoyed the original vocalist, and was excited to hear more of him, so having her interspersed throughout the track kind of brought it down a bit for me. After a quick bit of research, it was made apparent that she is an integral member of the band, so I was a bit offput by that, not being a huge fan of her overall sound.

The instrumentation meandered a bit, as if the song was drifting, and I actually quite liked that. It added an atmosphere that felt like a slow-burn, and when it began building, I was drawn, once again, to the strong harmonics. The orchestration in the background was a thoughtful addition and kept my attention throughout the track. Oddly enough, parts of it felt a lot like modern Biffy Clyro to me, in a strange way. I did feel a bit letdown overall, as the build-up seemed to promise a bit more of a climax than was offered by the conclusion of the track.  3.25/5
---

Obsidian Kingdom: Last of the Light / Away Absent
Elite

Wow, wow, wow. This first track, it was just absolutely stunning. I have always been meaning to give these guys a listen but have never gotten around to it. The vocals are ferocious, the music fast-paced, and the atmosphere crushing at first -- but it all shifts into a much more melodic, jazz-y cavalcade of instrumentation. The soundscape created is just absolutely enthralling. The ability to shift back and forth from black metal, to post metal, to post rock, to jazz, and all within 4-and-a-half minutes without seeming disjointed or interrupting the flow makes me give a ton of credit to this work. Really just fantastic. 5/5

The second track didn’t' do QUITE as much for me as the first one. The vocals sounded a bit grainier and not quite as powerful as in Last of the Light. It kept a lot of the things I loved from the first track, but it didn't quite reach its highs. Despite that, still a really nice track, and I'm definitely allured to the band now. 3.75/5
---

Nightwish: The Islander / Ghost Love Score
425

Nightwish has always been one of those "oh, yeah, them!" kind of bands for me. The few tracks I have heard have been pleasant, but nothing that overwhelmingly drew me into the music, making me yearn for me, so I was excited to see if these picks could potentially change that.

The Islander begins with what strikes me as a folk metal-inspired intro, something that I reasonably enjoy. The vocals that come in here are not remarkable, but they are quite solid, and I really love the harmonies that are weaved throughout the track. Interestingly enough, while I don’t particularly love the female vocals on the second track, the way they blend with the first vocalist in this track is much more pleasant for me. The atmosphere is appealing, and overall I really enjoyed it! 3.75/5

Ghost Love Score starts out with quite a bang, lots of orchestration and a nice focus on melody. Unfortunately, I am just incredibly picky with female vocals. There's only a handful of female vocalists that I absolutely adore, and this one does not reach the heights of those. It is definitely not a bad voice, of course, but it's just not the style that I really enjoy -- but the accompaniment is quite nice. The melodies are all quite excellent, and the dynamics are enjoyable as well. It is quite a fun romp throughout, and again, I love the instrumentation, and the way that the song ends is extraordinarily compelling, love the ending. Just couldn’t quite get into the vocalist. 3.5/5
---

Faith No More: Everything's Ruined / A Small Victory
Stadler

Another band that I can say "hey, I've listened to a few of their songs!" without truly exploring their discography.
Everything’s Ruined started off with a dissonant piano, building into some engaging guitar riffs, and then into the verse. The atmosphere at this point was very tense, and I was enjoying the vocals, but the advent of the spoken verse was quite grating for me. I’m not a fan of nu-metal, and though this isn’t exactly in that vein, it was certainly less enjoyable than the chorus, which I enjoyed. Luckily, the entire song was not comprised of that, and as such it was an interesting listen. The guitar solo was very melodic and memorable, and as the overall tone of the song shifted, I enjoyed what it had to offer. 3.25/5

I was quite taken by the intro of A Small Victory – from the first major note, it had my attention. What followed was an overall enjoyable listen, and whilst the occasional spoken vocals weren’t my favorite, the overarching vibe of the song was just, admittedly, a ton of fun, so it ended up a bit higher than the first track for me. 3.5/5
---

Sunless Dawn: Biomorph / Sovereign
Cyril

Man, you weren't wrong in your PM saying you thought I'd enjoy this band, haha. Listening to just those two tracks prompted me to listen to the entire album, so, if that's not a clear sign than I'm not sure what could be.

Biomorph is a three-part suite, but I felt fine including it as one piece as I stated time length was not a factor here. Everything is excellent in this suite, and it is quite the display. Excellent melodies, beautiful orchestration at times, crushing riffs, oustanding drumming, and a  powerful vocal performance. I really loved the occasional synths, and even the lyrics were very interesting. Overall, it really hit the sweet spots that my taste really loves. A fantastic send. 4.5/5

Sovereign has the same strengths that the rest of the album holds, and while maybe not as diverse as the "suite", it is still quite powerful in its own right, and kept my engagement throughout the song. Again, the excellent riffs, the melodic focus, and the variety throughout the song are things that helped it stand out from other songs this round.   4.5/5
---

Ereb Altor: A Fine Day to Die / With Fire in My Heart
TAC

The first track started off quite promising – I’m a huge fan of slow builds, and while admittedly I’m not a huge fan of doom metal, I really enjoyed the atmosphere created by the intro. When the riffage exploded, though – that was when the song got truly interesting for me. I was reminded a bit of classic Opeth, a bit of Bathory, all of which are huge positives in my book. The clean vocals were okay, nothing to write home about, nor comparable to someone like Akerfeldt, but they were passable. The harsher vocals, however, were excellent, reminiscent of old-school black metal, and I would’ve been keen to have heard more of them throughout the track. The instrumentation, while not exceedingly technical or mind-blowing, was still quite proficient, and I was not surprised at all to learn the group was Swedish – it shines through the music! Generally, the riffing got a bit repetitive, so I was struck by the moments where they departed from the overarching rhythm, like during the guitar solo. Overall, an excellent track. 4.25/5

With Fire in My Heart starts out similarly to the first track, though with a more foreboding tone, a bit more sorrowful. Again, similarly to the prior track, it builds into a faster-paced affair with a heavy focus on melody. I am a huge fan of the mixture of harsh and clean vocals at once, it always adds a certain amount of weight to music, making the vocals feel more powerful. There’s a lot of similarities here to folk metal, and it was another solid outing – both tracks make me want to check out more of the band’s work for sure. 3.5/5
---

Der Weg einer Freiheit: Ein letzter Tanz / Skepsis
Puppies_on_Acid

The first track started out with a melancholy intro that I really enjoyed – it created an immensely somber, wandering feeling, something that I usually quite dig in any song. I did feel as though it almost dragged a bit too long, but that’s always subjective.
As soon as the riffs and drums hit, though, I was floored. In came the absolutely crushing harsh vocals, not much else to say about them – they’re outstanding. The blending of black metal and post metal is just done so cohesively here (not that the two genres are THAT far apart, after all). That, paired with the more ambling ambient sections just creates a track that entices me to download their entire discography. The second closest anything has come in this round to absolute perfection in terms of my taste. 4.75/5

Skepsis, pt. 1 and pt. 2 are separate tracks, but you mentioned they were supposed to be paired together, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt! The intro of pt. 1 is incredibly chaotic and crushing, and after hearing their first track, I’m not surprised that this piece is incredible. The vocals, again, fit the music to a tee, and the instrumentation is just colossal. The piece definitely needs to be heard as a whole, as pt. 1 doesn’t quite have a resolution. The second part, again, is just outstanding. Can’t really find much to complain about with either of the tracks from these guys, fantastic send! 4.5/5

Nine Inch Nails: The Wretched / Hurt
Sacul

Alright, well, this one might be a little unfair, as I have heard both of these tracks (Hurt extensively). Despite that, I decided not to include any bands whom I had heard a bit of, because I was hoping people would send things that would make me raise my eyebrow and say "huh, why didn't I give these guys more of my attention?!"

That being said, I do not really recall anything about The Wretched. Listening to it again, I like the off-putting sound the instrumentation provides, but I am not big on the spoken vocals in the beginning. This trend continues throughout the track, and despite some interesting electronic stuff and an overall enjoyable atmosphere, I just can’t quite overlook my distaste of the vocals here. 2.5/5

Luckily, Hurt doesn’t follow the same vocal trend. Being a huge fan of the original Johnny Cash version, and having heard this once or twice before, I knew mostly what to expect going in. The atmosphere is just fantastic here, and though the vocals aren’t a strong point, they fit the unnerving feeling that the song strives to convey. A wonderful track, all things considered – I know it is a cover, but NIN really stands to make it their own here, and it works out pretty damn well. 4/5

Paradise Lost: Death Unites Us / No Hope in Sight
Tomislav95

You were correct in stating that I've heard of these guys, but I couldn't honestly name a song or a note of their music. The first track started off well, a very nice melody, and the vocals were quite strong. The way the song built was quite nice, and though it parts of it seemed a bit generic to me, I still quite enjoyed it.  3.5/5

No Hope in Sight was definitely stronger, however. I really like the melodic intro, and though again it was a bit generic at times, I dug the harsh vocals, the overall melodies, and the instrumentation was nice. I can see myself checking out an album of theirs in full, if you'd like to recommend whatever you think is their best work. Overall, a solid submission! 3.75/5

STANDINGS AFTER R1:

1st: Puppies on Acid - 9.25
2nd: Cyril - 9
3rd: Elite - 8.75
4th: ariich - 8
5th: TAC - 7.75
6th: Buddyhunter1 - 7.5
7th: HOF + 425 + Tomislav - 7.25
10th: Stadler - 6.75
11th: Sacul + The Walrus - 6.5
12th: Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 6.25

Let me know if there's any incorrect math here, I might have changed something here vs. in my Word doc that I didn't notice. And on to round two! Looking forward to everyone's tracks*.

 :o

Certainly not the reception I was expecting, to say the least! :lol This performance is renowned for the way Floor Jansen took an already-excellent song and absolutely turned it up to 11 with her performance (the song was originally recorded with a different singer). But, if you don't like her voice, you don't like her voice.

Glad you liked both songs overall, though. And if you liked the female vocals on The Islander, you should know that it's Anette Olzon, a different vocalist than the one on Ghost Love Score. She's on the Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum albums, so those might be the ones to go to if you decide to try more.

Wait, Cash covered NIN, not the other way around!

I thought you might dig Just Above Midtown, and then I specifically wanted a second opinion on A Shelter of Reeds after The Walrus/Kattelox said it didn’t do much for him in his roulette. I can see what you’re saying about the climax, though I think it might have been a bit too obvious to really go for it at the end. A more gentle landing suits the mood and lyrics I think.

I think Jana Carpenter is a great presence in SBP, but I can see preferring Tim Elsenberg’s voice. She wasn’t part of the band originally, so you might enjoy their earlier albums more (Twice Born Men is a really good one that doesn’t feature her). She’s really only taken leads on the last two albums, although now they are a duo with just Tim and Jana so she does contribute more on their most recent album (which includes A Shelter of Reeds). I’d say it’s still about 70% Tim on lead vocals though.

Sending round two here in a minute.

Oh, DUH, totally forgot about that. My bad, that’s how much his version does for me— it registers as his own song to me, hahah.

I’d recommend Motorcade Amnesiacs as a starting point for Sweet Billy Pilgrim. Probably their strongest all around even if you don’t love Jana’s voice (she has a couple leads but not many).

Heck yes! We may have another Moonsorrow convert! Definitely check out the albums Verisakeet and V.  :metal

You really going to do their most recent album dirty like that? Granted it's the only one I've listened to so far so there's a chance it might not be their best one, but to me that seems unlikely with how good it is. :)

Yeah, I corrected myself in that other post :O but yeah, again I’m a bit of a picky person when it comes to vocals — I was classically trained in singing myself, was part of a huge award winning competitive choir that sung in Carnegie Hall, at Yankee Stadium, Hawaii, amongst other things, so I have odd standards.

That being said, despite all of that I really enjoy M. Shadow’s vocals so impeccable quality isn’t always a must for me :D

Yeah, it seems like vocals are usually the thing that will push something from a 3.5-4 to a 4.5 for me, although the music has to fit as well — there are plenty of acts that have phenomenal vocalists where I don’t enjoy the musical content or style that much (like the band fun. — beautiful vocals, mostly poor music).

Also, Puppies, I’ve been listening to DWEF’s discog and my goodness is it outstanding. You’ve given me a new favorite!

This is exactly the approach I've taken to all three roulettes I'm currently in. No interest in winning, just kinda shooting from the hip and curious about the hosts' thoughts.

I really appreciate that approach -- I just want to hear an interesting variety of music, to be honest. It's fantastic to see how many different tastes and influences we have on the forum, and if everything was just trying to appeal to one particular side of my interests, it wouldn't be that interesting, so I'm glad you guys feel that way about it. I try to write some decent thoughts and remarks on everything, some seem to be longer than others just through the nature of how I'm feeling about a particular track, but I hope no one thinks I'm cutting theirs' short -- I just sometimes run out of things to say about a particular song.

In any case, what's been sent so far has been sounding great.

Okay, round two – complete. Again, sorry for talking a bit to get these results published. With all of the stuff that has been happening at work the past few weeks, it’s hard to give each track the attention it deserves AND get the writeups done within the week. Hopefully things will improve from here on out, since most of the teaching I’m doing now is entirely remote.

ROUND TWO

---
Novo Amor: Birthplace / State Lines
Shadow Ninja 2.0

Whew, what an improvement from your last round submission! These tracks are just stunningly gorgeous. I’ve listened to a few Novo Amor tracks from Spotify’s recommended list before, and enjoyed them, but I’ll have to explore further after hearing these.

Birthplace is outstandingly lovely, the atmosphere of the track, the falsetto vocals, the vacant-sounding piano hum. The harmonies that accompany his falsetto vocals are immense, and the song is content to occasionally build and then slow back down. 4/5

Man, the intro to “State Lines” is just stunning. Again, the vocals are just out of this world – I’m a sucker for falsetto, and this is no exception. Not only are the vocals elegant, but the melodies that accompany them are bewitching. I love how this track, like the prior track, seems happy to not build into some sort of bombastic, epic climax, yet the climax does exist – just in a more understated way. Overall, a fantastic submission. 4.5/5
---

Shade Empire: Anti-Life Savior / Map of Scars
ariich

The first track begins with a vocal clip, something I’ve always quite enjoyed – clips like these can really do a marvelous job of setting the overall mood for the song, and this is no different. The atmosphere is set by the bleakness of the clip, as the instrumentation builds – and then the harsh vocals kick in. I’m a huge fan of this vocalists’ growls, they suit the music fantastically. The instrumentation is quite orchestral overall, despite a solid guitar lead, and around 3:46 the guitar wails, which I took as the beginning of a guitar solo, but that didn’t quite happen! Despite that, the overall first half of the song is wholly powerful, the melodies strong and the vocals excellent.

Things slow down a bit for the second half of the song, and the pace is much-appreciated – it gives the song some room to breathe and hearkens back to the beginning of the songs’ original atmosphere. I wasn’t a huge fan of the robotic vocals around six minutes in, but they were mostly brief. The ending of the song is climactic, and everything builds to an immense conclusion. Definitely the brand of melodic death metal that I really love. Overall, an incredibly strong track, one that certainly entices me to check out the band further. 4.5/5

Map of Scars had a lot to live up to, of course – the first track was excellent. The intro here is a bit more classic melodeath, but it was nonetheless fantastic. Again, the vocals are a standout, and the instrumentation, while not overtly mind-blowing, accompanies the music well, and the added orchestral element adds an interesting dimension to the song. The piano section around 3:40 was an excellent moment – this band certainly seems to understand their dynamics fairly well. The music continues to build back up (similarly to the first track) but the payoff again is quite nice. Not quite as excellent as the first track, but still an awesome submission. 4/5
---

Obscure Phinx: Waiting For the Bodies Down the River Floating / The Presence of Goddess
Buddyhunter1

The first track starts off with a very ominous-sounding slow-build, and then starts to gain some momentum. You weren’t entirely off about the vocals – not something I would particularly usually choose to listen to, haha. Not once during this track do I feel like her vocals really add much to the sound at all. The post metal is done astonishingly well for the most part, and has a lot of small similarities to Rosetta, Neurosis, etc., but the vocals just fall incredibly flat for me. It’s a damn shame, too, because the building of the song is excellent, the overall atmosphere is well-done – but the vocal performance just brings it down a ton for me. You said you knew this would be risky going in, so this probably won’t come as a huge shock to you, haha. There are a lot of positives which allow this song to stay afloat, though, but the entire time I just wanted Scott Kelly to appear and start roaring. 3/5

The Presence of Goddess starts with another slow-build (I mean, this is post-metal after all!) and the brooding atmosphere is done quite well again. The vocalist sounds a bit better here, I feel as though for one, the melodies here suit her voice more, and secondly that she sounds much better belting out rather than trying to scream. I actually really like the fairly brief choir backing vocals here (would have liked a little more of that), and the overall composition of the song just feels stronger as a whole, despite it being longer. When things slow down a bit midway through, I really started to feel as though her vocals were standing out a bit more, which was nice. Again, the atmosphere created and the instrumentation are quite nice – a very solid post-metal outing, and in my eyes an improvement on the first track. 3.75/5

CHVRCHES: Leave a Trace / Clearest Blue
The Walrus

So, I’ve listened to CHVRCHES a bit in the past, but I can’t say I am incredibly familiar with all of their work. I always really enjoyed the vocalist; she has a very pleasant voice, and these tracks didn’t change that impression. This one was incredibly catchy, very very memorable. The melodies were gorgeous and the slow-down towards the ending was a beautiful touch. The electronics are tastefully done, no dubstep or any unnecessary showboating with the music. My favorite part, which might be fairly obvious, was definitely the chorus. Overall, just an excellent track! 4.25/5

“Clearest Blue” is also very catchy and memorable – the electronic instrumentation that starts around 2:30 is really quite nice, and though it isn’t quite as strong as Leave a Trace for me, I still really quite enjoyed it. 3.75/5

The Blue Nile: The Wires Are Down / The Downtown Lights
HOF

Really enjoying your submissions so far HOF, as I’ve not heard of either of them so far. “The Wires Are Down” starts off with a very spacious atmosphere – it’s reminiscent of like, a late night in a city. The vocals are nice, nothing entirely special but enjoyable. The entire song feels very lo-fi and chill in a sense, nothing truly exciting ever happens during the track, but it nonetheless leaves you feeling fairly positive, imparting its mood upon the listener. I can’t say it was one of the best songs I have ever heard, but I did quite like it. 3.5/5

“The Downtown Lights” similarly has a very chill feeling, very much early dream pop in nature. The vocals were a fair bit better in this track – maybe the melodies were better? Again, I’m just a big fan of the overall vibe the song has. Like I mentioned, it’s like after-dark city life, wandering amidst disorientating car lights and a brisk fog. The song continues to build from a more meager, mellow affair into a riot of sound, and it is all the better for it. An absolutely excellent track as it stands! 4/5

The Devin Townsend Band: Deadhead / Planet of the Apes
Elite

Despite some familiarity with the OTHER DT, I’ve not really listened to much of his besides Ocean Machine, Ziltoid and Epicloud (the dude has a HUGE discography). Having not really loved anything of his, the submission was a bit risky, but I feel as though it paid off in the end.
Deadhead starts out with a very melodic, engaging intro – all of the instrumentation is on point, and it builds an intense atmosphere. Devin’s vocals have never quite been my favorite, but they sound quite nice on this track. The occasional harsh vocals are not great, but they aren’t really the focus of the track. I really enjoyed the section five minutes in, with the vocals kind of faded in the background, while the instrumentation takes center focus. It’s overall quite a nice track, and doesn’t do a number of the things I recall not enjoying from his work, so it comes out as a very solid submission. 3.75/5

Planet of the Apes is a track I believe I’ve listened to back when it was released maybe… once? So I could not really recall anything about it. It has a very solid intro, again very orchestral and large. The vocals aren’t the greatest – I’m not a huge fan of the spoken vocal sound, but when it meshes with the instrumentation in order to feel heavy, it isn’t too bad. Just not my favorite sound. The instrumentation, again, is actually brilliant, and the section around 2:50 with the female vocals is tremendous. The next section, with a more major-key sound, is also quite nice! It begins building into a variety of sounds, a bit chaotic in nature but I was still enjoying the ride at this point. The more melodic section around 5:50 has a great atmosphere, and the exceptional harsh vocals that come in during the next section are very welcome. The drumming is terrific throughout, by the way – something I don’t always notice, but it was superb in this track. Certainly a few moments that are not quite my cup of tea, but the whole of the song was very entertaining. 4/5

Headspace: Stalled Armageddon / Soldier
425

Had not heard heads or tails of these guys, unlike a decent number of submissions, so I was quite excited to dig into these tracks. Quickly researching them on Sputnikmusic gave me the clue that they were progressive metal, and had some similarities to DT, Riverside, and Threshold, so these initial comparisons were encouraging.

The first track has a very ominous intro, building into a prog metal buffet of your typical instrumentation, but all performed very solidly. The piano around 3:30 was beautiful, and then the vocals came in. The vocals are actually quite nice – very typical “prog metal vocalist” in a sense, but he still has a very powerful voice and the harmonies that appear here and there are much appreciated. I loved the slow-down of the track around six minutes in, very good usage of dynamics. After a couple of listens, some of the smaller nuances revealed themselves to me as well – the usage of harmonics, the hints of various other instrumentation in the background – all very quite nice. As a whole, a very enjoyable track and a good introduction to the band for sure! 4/5

Soldier is a more somber song, ballad-esque in nature, and again, I’m always glad to hear multiple sounds from a band in these roulettes. The vocals again are quite nice, and though the melodies aren’t the strongest for me, the song is overall very beautiful, and has a number of nice moments. Not as strong as the initial impression of their work, sadly, but still a good track that I can imagine would work better in the context of the album overall. 3.5/5

Oasis: Be Here Now / Roll It OVer
Stadler

I’m familiar with Oasis, but only on the basis of their hits, which I have always mostly enjoyed. Hadn’t heard of either of these songs, though!

Be Here Now is very catchy and the whistling in the background adds a lot of fun to the song! The chorus is very solid, super memorable, as are the melodies. It almost felt like a Beatles track to me, honestly, which is a plus in my book. While it doesn’t really do anything new or innovative, it’s just a solid rock song with a good hook, it keeps your foot tapping.  Overall, very pleasant and a ton of fun! 3.75/5

Roll it Over started out a bit more somber in tone, a shift from the first track – which is something I quite appreciate in the roulette. I want to hear the multiple aspects a band can employ, and in my opinion, determine where their strengths lie! Really enjoyed the vocals on this one – I have always been a fan of Liam, but here I find his voice to be very powerful, as you mentioned! The last three minutes of the song are just lovely – the choir-esque vocals in the background accompanying the chorus, and the guitars swelling – all of it just adds up to an excellent, soulful ending. The mood of the song is very temperate, and while it is not quite as fun as the prior track, it stands out due to its strong chorus, its gorgeous melodies, and again, a very strong vocal performance. Definitely a strong submission.  4/5

East of the Wall: Naif-Linear Failure-My Favorite Society Guy / The Apologist
Cyril

So I’ve actually listened to The Apologist before one time through, back in like, 2012 I believe. I remember enjoying it, but I was listening to a ton of stuff then and honestly just forgot to check out any of their work further or revisit the album at all. Despite that, I knew essentially what I would be getting for this round.
Your submission included three songs that you said you consider a “suite” of songs, and while I’m not entirely sure this is a good call, I’m allowing it anyways – the tracks are fairly short compared to some of the submissions I’m getting here. The vocals in the first track of the suite are great – I actually find the screams here weaker than the sung vocals, which is usually the opposite, I find. But that’s not to say that I didn’t like the screams, they are still very solid, especially when they are employed in that “gang vocal” style. The instrumentation is on display throughout – strong guitar, audible bass, solid drums, is well-performed. The three songs DO feel as though they belong together, so I understand that feeling. Linear Failure is my favorite of the three, though, just for the melodic guitar solo midway through the track – an excellent touch. 4/5

The Apologist is similarly quite good, the vocals again are a standout, especially the harmonies accompanying the harsh vocals around halfway through the track. The song has a very nice focus on dynamics, shifting back and forth from heavier, fast-paced sections, and more quiet, meandering instrumentation. Again, an excellent track – I need to further explore their discography! 4/5

Illyria: Kenopsia / Winter’s Wedding
TAC

Alright, so, confession here – I’ve heard this album, and I really enjoyed it. I’ve only heard it once though, like two years ago, so I felt it would be fine to revisit it and see what my thoughts on it now were.

Illyria play a brand of the blackened shoegaze-y metal, a sound that can be a huge hit or miss for me – when it hits (Deafheaven – Sunbather, Abigail Williams – Walk Beyond the Dark) it is usually immense for me, so I was interested to see how this would fair. The first track is excellent – very melodic, good harsh vocals, and a beautiful climax towards the end. While the first half of the song is fairly standard post black metal, the latter half is dynamic, engaging, and ends on a very strong note. 4/5

Winter’s Wedding starts out a bit slower, choosing to slowly meander and build up, rather than hit the ground running. This song is a lot more melodic, taking a page more from post-rock than anything. The sung vocals are pleasant, if unremarkable. The section around 3:30 is quite nice – it has a beautiful melody, and then it breaks out into the harsh vocals again. Again, the song does the dynamics very well, and though a bit less memorable than the first track, it still holds its own and is quite a solid affair. 3.5/5

Enslaved: 793 (Slaget Om Lindisfarne) / Neogensis
Puppies_on_Acid

So, I am familiar with Enslaved, but I have not really explored their discography other than Frost, which I did enjoy. So, didn’t quite know what to expect going in – their sound has varied quite a bit over the years. The first track begins with an atmosphere that is very reminiscent of Summoning for me – almost sounds dungeon-synth-y to me. It has quite an eerie build-up and keeps you on your toes, wondering what’s going to happen next.  When the vocals came in, I was a bit disappointed – the feeling of the song is very folk-y, but the vocals aren’t incredibly strong. When the song began a darker-sounding shift, I started to enjoy it quite a bit more. Again, the sung vocals weren’t too great, but when the real “black metal” began around 8:30 it was a lot more enjoyable. I liked the outro, very Opeth feeling. Overall, though, cannot say that I loved it – it had some moments where the music was great, but they do not comprise the entirety of the track. It was very middle of the road for me, sadly! 3/5

The vocals sounded a bit better on Neogenesis, still nothing outstanding, but serviceable. At 11 minutes, I knew there would likely be a solid amount of variation throughout the track, and I was not wrong – it takes you on quite the ride! There’s not really any build-up or intro, it just kind of begins right out of the gate. The instruments here are quite nice overall -the melodies are very enjoyable and engaging. The harsh vocals are much appreciated here as well – when they began, my enjoyment of the song shifted upwards for sure. Enslaved seem to trend towards a more progressive sound for their black metal, which is quite interesting – the guitar solos throughout the song are fantastic, and again I hear bits and pieces of Opeth in various moments. The last few minutes of the song were fantastic as a whole, the instrumentation and the melodies specifically – would have loved more of that throughout the whole song. Overall, an improvement on the first track for sure, and a solid submission, but it definitely pales in comparison to the submission from last round. 3.75/5

Nils Frahm: For – Peter – Toilet Brushes – More / Keep
Sacul

I’ve heard of Nils Frahm, and I believe I have listened to “For Now I am Winter” at some point, but not overly familiar with his work. The first track has a lot of little moments that are very enjoyable – the atmosphere and the ambiance are quite nice overall, but it didn’t quite hold my attention during certain areas. The length of the song probably does not do any favors in this regard, but it did have some stand out moments, like the melodic piano section beginning around 8:50, which continues on for quite some time – definitely my favorite area of the song, and I was glad it comprised most of the song until the end. Overall a solid track with a lot of beautiful moments. 3.75/5

Keep starts off with a very beautiful piano intro, and while there isn’t a ton to say about the track overall, it is quite pretty and I enjoyed the melodies thoroughly. Although it is short, it’s quite sweet, and the song kept me engaged throughout. A very pleasant track! 4/5
---

Todtgelichter: Café of Lost Dreams / Neon
Tomislav95

“Café of Lost Dreams” starts with a crushing guitar intro, building quickly into harsh vocals. These vocals are fairly standard black metal, but they sound relatively nice. The song is fast-paced, the vocals harsh and desperate, and the instrumentation fairly strong. The clean female vocals towards the end aren’t great, but they’re fine overall. Overall, nothing in this track jumps out at me as standing heads-and-shoulders above any other black metal, but again, it was still a nice track. 3.5/5

I wasn’t super impressed by the female vocals that comprise most of this track – they’re not bad, per say, they just fall a bit flat for me. I much prefer the harsher vocals from the first track. That being said, the instrumentation is done exceptionally well, and I very much enjoyed the melodies the track employs. 3.75/5

I had a feeling 793 may not go over well. It was a shot in the dark.

I am curious though. I almost sent As Fire Swept Clean the Earth from their Below the Lights album, and wonder if that would have scored better.

Glad you liked that one as well. The Blue Nile are a magical band that not many know about, but they made some really great music and were one of those groups that influenced a lot of other artists but never really broke through. Paul Buchanan is one of my favorite singers. Such a warm, subtle but emotive voice.

The album Hats is one of my favorite recordings. I loved your characterization of the music (wandering through the city at night in the lights and fog, etc.). That’s exactly the vibe that that whole album encapsulates. I can’t recommend it highly enough if you like Downtown Lights.

Oof for landing in last place, though the scores are all pretty close together so there might be some hope for recovery. Will send something tomorrow.

LOL a female vocalist scored one of the highest this round. I just didn't like your particular vocalist all that much :D

EDIT: You're right though, you can easily jump a couple places just from submitting a really strong song -- the differences aren't that large at the moment. Still haven't had a 5 yet either, that would probably shake things up quite a bit too!

Eh, I feel like it would make sense to stick to just a singular artist, keep it consistent. Though if you want to send something like that to accompany something regardless, I'd be happy to listen to it!

Let's just score it ourselves

Cyril: East of the Wall - The Apologist
4/10

almost called it :neverusethis:

Heretic, glad you liked Stalled Armageddon. It's certainly more representative of the album than Soldier, which is the lone ballad. And I think many of the other tracks are at least as good (I had a hard time choosing which one to send), so hopefully you'll enjoy the album as a whole!

I think that's the first (and last so far) time I could ever send Devin Townsend and I'm glad the tracks did fairly alright! He's definitely quirky in a way and I can see why some people would not enjoy that as much. His output is really varied though, so there should be something you might like. I recommend listening to Ki (my favourite record of his) and you might actually enjoy the Casualties of Cool record as well, which is very different from his other stuff. Since Planet of the Apes did quite well, the album it came from might be up your alley. It's called 'Deconstruction' and it's probably the most chaotic thing he's done.

You're getting something different for Round 3!

So I've always taken the approach that you need to walk into the mouth of the beast.  Well, I've never actually taken that approach, I'm too much a fraidy cat, but I'm going to here.   I'm sending someone I think is a phenomenal female singer and we'll see how we do.

I'm thrilled with the score for Oasis, especially "Roll It Over"; I LOVE that vocal, I think it's one of his best, from a guy that is far more well known for his behavioral issues than his talent.

I believe that sent PMs are essentially unlimited (they are for mods anyway, but someone correct me if that's wrong for everyone else!). If that's the case for everyone then you can do what I do which is to quote reply to everyone to say thanks, and then the quoted PM gets saved in my sent items box. :)

You also need to make sure you have the setting turned out to save outgoing PMs by default though!

Results HOPEFULLY tomorrow. Don't want to 100% confirm anything but I will try to have them posted haha.

This has been a tough round to judge as well -- everyone's submissions were great. Going to tighten these margins by quite a bit...

I guess late is better than never. Maybe it is just because I am super tired right now, but the fake arms thing is already killing me.
