Title: The Nevermore Appreciation Thread
Post by: Slain on September 07, 2009, 12:53:27 PM
Anyone like them as much as I do?

Warrel Dane = Awesome vocalist

Jeff Loomis = Badass guitarist.

I've always liked how the guitar style is very death/thrash esque while the vocals are not.

Nevermore is one of my top favourite bands. One of the best metal bands out there.

I agree on both Warrel Dane and Jeff Loomis. They are both incredible musicians.

Favourite albums:
Dead Heart in a Dead World, This Godless Endeavor and Dreaming Neon Black.

This Godless Endeavor = album of 2005.

Looking forward to their new album next year. It's gonna be badass.

Amazing band for sure.

The wait for The Obsidian Conspiracy is killing me. Even a small preview/update of some sort would be awesome.

Definitely one of my favorite metal bands as well.  I've long described them as "Pantera and Queensryche had a bastard child and named it Nevermore."  (In other words...what's not to like?)

Also had no idea there was another album due out.  I'll definitely get it when it does.

This Godless Endeavor and Dreaming Neon Black are their best albums, but I seem to listen to Enemies of Reality the most. And I agree that Warrel and Jeff are two of the most exciting people in the metal world! I hope they don't make us wait too much longer for a new album.

I cant wait for the next album. This Godless Endeavour stayed in my CD player for literally months.

Loomis is such a beast, although for me its Warrel Dane's vocals that make the band stand out.
also, Year of the voyager = brutal dvd. Wish they had kept Broderick on, that way he wouldn't have gone to Megadeth to lick Mustaine's shoes whilst playing some run of the mill music...

It's not the vocals, it's the music. I dunno, it does nothing for me.

Warrel Dane and Jim Sheppard (bassist) were in Sanctuary and are the founders of Nevermore. Jeff Loomis was Sanctuary's touring guitar player, and joined up with Nevermore.

Yes, "Dead Heart" and "Godless" are amazing.

But "Enemies of Reality" might be my favorite. It's their most brutal, but also instantly awesome, which is good sometimes I guess.

As for the original mix, it has no clarity or definition at all. But I grew to love it. When the Sneap remix came out, it sounded a lot better. But sometimes more hi-fi isn't the way to go.

TAC - Nevermore is completely worth checking out. Trust me. I'm a newer fan. Got into them on their last album cycle on a recommendation from a friend.

I swear on my entire family's future graves, I will not miss them if they come to Washington. They are a Seattle based band, they better play here on their next headlining tour.

If it was in Seattle, it was more than likely at Showbox @ the Market, Showbox SoDo, El Corazon or Studio Seven.

There are a few others, but those tend to be the primary venues for smaller metal shows.

Oh, Studio Seven rings a bell! Must have been there. Bit of a dive, and the one little A/C unit wasn't doing shit against the August heat, but I think that just added to the charm of the show.

Well, was it an incredibly small place? Like, you walk in and the stage is already only 50 feet away from you? If so, yeah that's Studio Seven. I saw Eluveitie and Alestorm there last November. Such a good show. I love the environment of smaller venues.

Heh, I saw the same folk metal tour up here at a small place in Vancouver. Good stuff.

I'd put it up there with This Godless Endeavor. Warrel's voice sounds awesome, and Loomis still has that Nevermore uber-heavy vibe going. I'd say yes.

I am going to pick up TOC first day fore sure.  If you want to hear Temptation, it's on Warrel's myspace.  IMO, it's quite a dissapointing cover.  They have done the song no favours, and have taken the key right down and really killed the vibe IMO.  Warrel doesn't have the magic here, but hey it is a cover and kudos to them for not reworking the whole thing like they have done in the past.

IMO this shows how strong a trio of musicians the Tea Party were.  Jeff Martin is so amazing it's not funny.

I personally have never been big on their covers. They are interesting interpretations, but obscure the original identity of the song too much IMO. I really like the second half of Love Bites, when it kicks into gear. But the sludgey first half is almost unrecognizable.

I actually really enjoy Nevermore's cover of The Sound of Silence. Yes, the original is such a mellow song, while this one is rather heavy. But I feel it adds a new charm to the song, and is an interesting twist to a classic.

Title: Re: The Nevermore Appreciation Thread
Post by: lateralus88 on June 10, 2010, 12:16:39 AM
As a die hard fan, The Obsidian Conspiracy was definitely a bit different from what I'm used too. But not completely different, since it feels very much in the vein of Dead Heart in a Dead World. Overall, it's an extremely solid album, with some fucking :metal moments, some slightly meh moments, and some things that took some getting used to in the past day :p

Track by track:

The Termination Proclamation - Nice heavy, brutal opening track with an extremely catchy chorus. Albeit not their best opener, but does justice as an opening track. 8/10
Your Poison Throne - I really enjoy this one. Concise and heavy. 8/10
Moonrise (Through Mirrors of Death) - Possibly one of the best tracks on the album. I especially enjoy the guitar work displayed on this one. 9/10
And The Maiden Spoke - One of the weaker tracks. By all means, it isn't bad. But like many sections within this album, it feels like it's missing some of that beloved brutality a lot of other Nevermore contains. (Note, this album in general feels a bit more...melodic and slower compared to it's predecessor) 7/10
Emptiness Unobstructed - This is definitely the weakest track on the album. It kind of feels like it doesn't go anywhere for the 4 and a half minutes it lasts. It's just alright if nothing else. 5/10
The Blue Marble and the New Soul - Not much to say about this one, other than it's pretty okay. Nothing really special to talk about. 6/10
Without Morals - Fuckin sweet song. Not the best, but one of the stronger tracks. I dig it. 7/10
The Day You Built the Wall - Another weaker track, but definitely good. 6/10
She Comes in Colors - Such a fucking good song. Definitely one of the highlights of the album. I really, really enjoy this one. 9/10
The Obsidian Conspiracy - Now this, this is what Nevermore is all about. The band has always been good for making the title tracks on albums the best, most brutal tracks (with the exception of Dreaming Neon Black). This is definitely the most :metal song on the album, and alone is worth purchasing the album. So. Fucking. Good. 10/10

It's probably the best metal album ever made. And it's miles better than TOC.

Pretty much all of this. TGE is by far Nevermore's masterpiece, where Dead Heart and Politics are excellent tier albums. Enemies of Reality is great, but has shit production quality (get the remixed version if you can find it, I hear it's better). Dreaming Neon Black is also great but took me some time getting into since it's a bit different from the other albums. I still don't have their self titled yet, so nothing is to be said about it from me.

I completely agree with this. But after multiple more listens, it really has grown on me. It's definitely nowhere near their best work, but it's a solid album.

Just picked up the special edition.  I have mixed feelings.  I love how the band has focused more on the songs, for me it's a mix between Dead Heart and War machine from Dane.  The first half rips, but a few of the songs in the middle brings it all down by the lack of speed, it just gets a bit ploddy.  The title track although is amazing!!  It will grow on me more I'm sure, but in places it just feels like something's missing, like they are holding back a bit on us.

Haven't listened to the Doors cover but the Tea Party cover is horrid.  No comparison to the original.

Thanks for the review Lat, I've always liked Nevermore's melodic side (I love DHiaDW and some of my favourite songs on TGE are the more melodic ones, though the heavy stuff is brilliant as well), so sounds like I might like the new one!

I've listened to it a lot these past few weeks.

Moonrise, The Obsidian Conspiracy, She Comes In Colours and The Termination Proclamation are all worthy additions for Nevermore.

The rest of the album is almost completely forgettable to me. One or two decent moments but they're all missing the mark for me.

Still, a good album for what it is. Just not on the same scale as TGE (which was always going to be a big ask)

Fortunately the new album is on Spotify, so I've had a couple of listens today. On first listen I thought it was very good but slightly lacking something. On second listen I completely changed my mind, what an excellent album! Maybe not as good as TGE, but still a really solid new addition to their catalogue!

Holy shit was last night's show good. Nevermore have only proved once again why they are one of the greatest metal bands to come from the 90's and still be producing fantastic music today. From the moment they started to the end of the second encore, I was in a fit of uncontrollable headbanging and uninterrupted belting of every lyric of every song.

I also have to say that Warrel is one of the coolest frontmen to any band. His banter was rather humorous, he was very humble towards the crowd and really just kept everyone feeling welcome and in a good mood. I really respect the way took the stage. He didn't shout at anyone, he didn't act like the stereotypical "ANGRY METAL HEAD ROORORORORORO" and he just acted like the laid back, awesome dude he is. One thing I found funny is during the "encore" while everyone else went back stage he just stood there looking at us and said "You know, this is the part where I'm supposed to go back with the band and we wait for you to cheer and we come back to do an encore. Eh, that's kind of fuckin stupid. Instead, while they are back there, I guess I'll tell some jokes or something." I then looked straight at him and yelled "TELL DEAD BABY JOKES!". And he did.

The rest of the band was fuckin top notch. Loomis is a guitar god, and proved it once more throughout the entire show. Jim Sheppard is such a strange guy on stage, but I love it. During the intro to This Godless Endeavor (Yes, the fucking played it. Fuck. Yes.), Sheppard put on a towel over his head and just stood behind Warrel, wide eyed, staring at the audience. I started cracking up. And of course, Williams is still the badass drummer he's always been.

tl;dr The show kicked so much ass, it's unbelievable.

Setlist:

The River Dragon Has Come
Born
Emptiness Unobstructed
Inside 4 Walls

They came through New York a weeks or so ago, but on top of having only one of their albums (The Obsidian Conspiracy), no money, and no way to get down there, I wasn't too down about missing it. Plus it was 16+ with ID... which I just became eligible for today .

They were headlining. Though, maybe it has something to do with them playing with 4 other bands last night, who knows. But god damn, it was good either way. I was rather content with it, seeing how tired I was by the time Warbringer finished their set and Nevermore was setting up there.

They are young and have mass appeal. They are catering towards a broad spectrum, with music that has elements of the most modern core-type of stuff to the throw-back melodic hook stuff of the 80's. I think they have an impressive template and pull it off well.
Not saying I'm hugely into them, but what I've heard I like.

Warbringer has also been touring like a beast. Gotta use those young, fiery passions while they still have'em I suppose. The label will tour them till they burnout an start killing each other. Both bands are already having the lineup swapping rage like most developing bands do.

I'm one of those guys who very much dislikes almost anything -core related. The singer has a good SINGING voice, and if dropped the harsh vocals and the band dropped all the uninspired breakdown riffs, they could be decent in my eyes.

Never heard of them, so I can't say. There are a couple of core bands that I like, but that's because they generally don't sound like the generic -core bullshit.

I don't know, I am by no means a "core" guy, but some screaming can be put to good use. I love Fear Factory, Death, Necrophagia, Strapping Young Lad etc. Its all about how you use it. I think that particular kid sounds decent, and his singing voice is quite good to boot. Its good to be a well-rounded vocalist.
Title: Re: The Nevermore Appreciation Thread
Post by: lateralus88 on September 28, 2010, 12:12:31 AM
He should do power metal, honestly.

And comparing core screaming to Chuck Schuldiner's vocal style or SYL's isn't much of an argument, seeing how they aren't core or sound like generic core harsh vocals. I'm also just nit-picking away at your statement.
Title: Re: The Nevermore Appreciation Thread
Post by: MykeHavoc on September 28, 2010, 10:53:54 AM
Oh, I understand. I'm just illustrating the difference between good screams and lousy ones. The kid has decent tone from what I've heard and is clearly gonna help them appeal to a younger audience. Hell, my current band is a bit of a sell-out. You gotta appeal to the people with the money.

2 questions

1. I have decided to try to get into these guys. After listening to This Godless Endeavour (song) I think I might be able to get over the dudes power metally voice and get into the epic 7 stringness. Where to start?

2. I don't think I can catch them coming near me (Philly) in 3 weeks, are they going to schedule more dates?

I know you guys aren't psychic but knowing the band, I'm asking for an educated guess.

Dude...just...don't.

If you MUST know, just watch the promo videos for the album (EoR and I Voyager). Its the prime example that the mix/master process can make or break an album.

As for where to start? Dead Heart in a Dead World. That's THE one album of theirs I'd take to an island.

It's.....interesting.  Technically is absolutely terrible.  Kelly Gray did an awful job.  The band were pissed at him and they shouldn't have released it, but I guess they were bound by their record company.

To be honest, I can listen to it, it does have a certain raw brutality to it.  I own both versions, I only think I can listen to the original because I know I have the remaster.  The amount of clipping on the cd is laughable.  I don't even know how they could get it to sound this unprofessional.  There's also no bottom end what so ever.

I mainly only brought it for the DVD.  An interesting piece of Nevermore's history.

Enemies of Reality is my favorite, and you may like it for the sheer brutality (honestly, some parts feel like death metal with clean vox). Most people will say This Godless Endeavor, but that one took a while to grow on me.

I'd say Dead Heart.

The original mixing for Enemies of Reality is absolutely awful. It's the version I own, and upon first listen I thought my CD was fucked up or something (a la Pull Me Under).

Numbers, I'd say This Godless Endeavor or Dead Heart in a Dead World. Both are absolutely fantastic albums. Enemies of Reality is as well great, but it has a few weaker moments if you ask me.

Time for my bi-weekly post and I will present to you a controversial opinion:

As an album, Dreaming Neon Black outweighs This Godless Endeavor. The latter may have amazing individual tracks but it doesn't take me on a journey the way DNB does. Or maybe I've just played TGE too much for my own sake.

I'm pretty sure Nevermore comes up with an album/song title that sounds cool, and then try to write a song around it. The Termination Proclamation/The Obsidian Conspiracy/The Heart Collector/The Politics of Ecstasy/Seed Awakening/Do I really need to go on?

Honestly, most of their titles generally have a "deeper" meaning to them. As for what the shit an "obsidian conspiracy" is, I have no clue. I know Obsidian is a type of volcanic glass, but where that ties into the rest...I'm not sure.

I had things planned out so I could see them (even though it would be the day after Coheed). I mean, Nevermore is one of my favourite metal bands. Symphony X were just kind of an added bonus. I guess I'm not going now.

But yeah, at least I'm seeing Coheed and SOAD in the same month.

Ah damn I really wish this band was still together. I hope Warrel Dane doesn't try to keep Nevermore going without Jeff Loomis.

I was never a big fan of Dreaming Neon Black. Never got what was so great about it. Dead Heart on the other hand is a masterpiece. They really showed what they could do on that one. Dead Heart and Enemies of Reality are, imo, their 2 best albums.

I liked Godless Endeavor, but felt to me like something was not right. Whatever made Dead Heart and Enemies so great was there. It was good, and very dark. Kind of a mix of old Nevermore like DNB, mixed with Dead heart/Enemies.

I think what it is is that I prefer Nevermore when Loomis is the only guitarists and songwriter. I know they have a 2nd guitarist on tour because Loomis writes their songs for 2 guitar parts. He is clearly insistent that Nevermore is a 2 guitarist band. They brought in that guy Steve Smyth i think for Godless as an official member and writer. He helped write a lot of Godless endeavor. I think that's the problem, as i see it.

Loomis wrote Dead Heart, Enemies and the last one all by himself. 2 guitar tracks, right? But all Loomis. He's awesome. His style is kickass and he writes a variety of styles. Those 3 albums have a sound that i like to describe as 'metallic'. Godless was darker and more brooding, less metallic.

Too bad they split. Really sucks. Clearly Loomis is awesome and knows how to write songs. I reaaaaally hope he forms a new band soon. With a better singer (i like warrel, but i was starting to tire of him.). I have a feeling that if Loomis forms a new band, they will be the next Megadath ;)

I'm not too familiar with him, but he's in or was in Megadeth right? I'v just been getting into them. Bought their new one, Super Collider. First listen, thought i made a huge mistake. But it's growing on me. People complain that it's not thrash. But i hear some in there. I don't mind them expirimenting a bit. I have also heard The System Has Failed, and the songs i heard are fuckin awesome. Need to buy that one. But this isn't a megadeth thread so i'll shut up.

...but wouldn't it have been awesome if Jeff Loomis HAD joined Megadeth? You heard the story of him auditioning when he was younger. Never made it cuz he was too young. But damn, imagine him writing songs with Mustaine. My god....

Guess we all have different likes. I know a LOT of people considered Godless Endeaver of of the greatest metal albums when it first came out. And lots still do. I'v heard it called one of the best Guitar albums ever. It is great. But I guess I just like pure Loomis written songs.

Maybe Loomis quit because they didn't have enough commercial success. If you listen to Dead Heart or Enemies, there are songs in there that sound like attempts at making it mainstream. And those songs i'm referring too are some of their best. I find that on the solely Loomis written albums there is more melody. That's why i like them the most.

Wow. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but you're completely at odds to everyone else's about TGE. The general consensus was that it was a massive step UP in quality from Enemies (which is generally regarded as being a decidedly average Nevermore album, even before the dreadful mix it had originally) and that Steve Smyth's arrival making the band an ACTUAL two guitar band was one of the reasons why. I saw Nevermore open for Opeth on the tour for TGE and they were awe inspiring with that line up, and I can't help but think Smyth having to leave the band for health reasons was a major reason why they began to fall apart. It was a bad sign when the solo albums started coming too, especially given how huge TGE had been and its general reception at the time. Kind of wish TGE had been their last album, it would have made a hell of a swan song.

Since it first came out, I realize I'v been at odd with fans about TGE. I like it. But i just feel it's missing what Dead Heart and Enemies had. I liked the somewhat 'sentimental' moments those albums had. I'm talking about Heart Collector (one of their best), the melodic moments of We Disintegrate, River Dragon, etc.. And from Enemies, Tomorrow Turned and Who Decides- these ones are personal faves of mine. I felt TGE lacked those elements. I still like it, but I don't listen to in nearly as much as those 2. And, unfortunately, i have yet to hear Obsidian Conspiracy. I kinda stopped paying attention to music for awhile, but I'm back now.

I was actually happy when i found out it was only Loomis on TOC. And yeah, when members start doing solo albums like that it's never a good sign. Have yet to hear them, but I guess i kinda assumed Dane's would just come off as sounding like a poor man's Nevermore. But i'v yet to hear it.

I still listen to TGE, and wonder why i can't enjoy it nearly as much as i enjoy those two. I guess, like i said, it's those melodic moments i missed, and the lack of that 'metallic' sound i described earlier.

I wonder how it woulda sounded if after Smyth left Loomis had just written TOC as a one guitar album. Or at least some of it. The Bass would probably be more prominent. I find that in most cases that's how it sounds with a one guitar player band, like Tool. Justin Chencellor is a very underrated bass player.

Interestingly I'm the other way around to a lot of the people here. I'm big into TGE, and consider it one of the best metal albums ever. I like dead heart in a dead world, dreaming non black and enemies of reality (not that familiar with obsidian conspiracy) but I don't find any of them as special as TGE. The title track doing those doomy sounds with "darkness awakes" being sung over the top is just perfect!

Count me in as a DNB fanboy.   To me, that is their "Scenes From a Memory"....just a perfect concept album on every level.   Possibly the best thrash concept album I've ever heard.

Dead Heart was excellent, but didn't quite reach DNB's perfection.   I bought EoR when it first came out, so I still have only heard the Kelly Grey mix...which I obviously wasn't thrilled about.

After that, I just lost interest for awhile.   I like the stuff I've heard from TGE and TOC, but I've just been too busy focusing on other genre's and more important albums.

Sanctuary getting back together has rekindled my interest though...I'm going to have to go back and pick up the last couple of Nevermore albums.    And with Brad Hull (of the LEGENDARY Forced Entry) joining the ranks has me even MORE stoked.   :xbones :hefdaddy

Please, any of you who haven't checked out Forced Entry....remedy that right away.   They were one of the first technical thrash bands that simply got swept under the rug when the Seattle grunge scene hit paydirt.     They were the darlings of the Seattle area music scene just before "the big 4" started playing clubs around here.

Kelly Gray's bad sounding mix works great for Enemies of Reality. I was shocked when I heard it, but it gives the album a nice underground vibe. I love it, it's sick. Afterwards the super polished Sneap remix just didn't sound powerful at all to me.
Title: Re: The Nevermore Appreciation Thread
Post by: NotePad on December 12, 2013, 01:12:09 PM
The bad production sound really has given Enemies of Reality a bad name. I bought it when i was on a trip in Europe so I listened to it a lot during that time and came to love it despite the poor sound quality. Lost my copy though so i'll need to buy it again. I'm assuming the remixed version is the only one out there now? At least I hope so.

Enemies of Reality is such a kickass cd. The solos are amazing. Jeff Loomis is basically a guitar god. But he may never get that title if he doesn't get more of his name/music out there. Nevermore was getting huge, were they not? When TGE came out they were the talk of the town, (the metal town). But i guess TOC didn't get as much buzz. Too bad. Nevermore was his vessel. I just hope Loomis finds a new band or gets nevermore back together. Really all he needs is to get into a recording studio with Warrel Dane and they're gold.

@Notepad

I recall asking about their breakup shortly after it occurred and wondering if it had anything to with Dane being jerky. The person that replied to me seemed to basically say "yeah." Anyone know if that really was the case? Dane did seem to exude that schmucky Tate/Ulrich vibe so it seems plausible.

I've never listened or read any interviews with any of the nevermore guys, so i don't have much impression of their personalities. I wouldn't be surprised though. Sometimes on the last couple records i felt like Warrel should have toned it down a bit, like his vocals were too overpowering and was interfering with parts that should have been focused on insturmentals. Seems kinda like he wants to continue Nevermore without Loomis, or it did at first, but probably realizes that if he did go on with a loomis replacement he would be seen as somewhat of a Axel Rose type figure.

I just think his vocal style sucks a lot of the time. He has some cool moments but uses enough vibrato to make JLB blush. Also, much like Evanescence's Amy Lee, he's very one-dimensional in his expression of moods. Whether softspoken or belting it out, he almost always sounds sad. On rare occasions, he sounds angry or frustrated but it seems like he always tries to milk the sorrow angle.

I think the reason Nevermore never really exploded was because there was a MASSIVE 5 year gap between TGE and TOC, and TOC wasn't good enough to rekindle the interest. That's the problem with going 5 years between releases for a band. It works for bands like Rush who have established a household name in the music biz, but for a band trying to get recognized, you have to keep getting music out there, or touring at the very least. I can't think of a single band that anyone cares about that goes 5-6 years between albums.

That is very true. Metallica gets away with it because they're, well, the biggest band in the world! (and i attribute a lot of the reason for that being BECAUSE they've experimented and stayed fresh). Tool can do it too, cuz they have a HUGELY dedicated fanbase, and APC may also have helped TOOL stay on top.

They shouldn't have taken such a big break after TGE, that's true. But a lot of bands do that after a hugely successful album. Metallica did it with the Black album, and ever since (cuz they metallica; see above statement). Didn't Shadows Fall take a long break before anything new after The War Within? That was not only a critical success, but a sales success considering it was straight up thrash.

Although TGE was a huge critical success and every metalhead worldwide fucking loved it, was it a financial success? Did it sell well? Because if it wasn't as financially as those bands i just mentioned, then then could be a reason for the lack of interest in Nevermore. I remember when TOC came out, even I had lost interest and wasn't that excited about it. (i've still yet to buy it ; unfortunately ;p)

They also maybe shouldn't have done those solo albums. Because i'm sure not nearly as many people bought those as they did Nevermore records.

Considering they were on Century Media at the time, which only sells to the fans and not to the masses, I doubt it sold very well at all. Bands like Metallica, Rush, Tool, APC, etc. are on labels that promote EVERYWHERE. It's just more proof that the crowdfunding is the way of the future as far as music is concerned. The money goes straight from the fan to the artist, with no label middleman. Sure, big bands like Rush and Metallica would lose the worldwide promotion, but for bands that are on labels like Century or hell even Nuclear Blast (who already only promote to the fans anyway), they're hardly losing anything at all.

In my last comment I said parts of Dead Heart and 2 songs of of Enemies of Reality sounded like Nevermore trying to make it mainsteam. I don't know if that's the case (one could just say it was simply melody and not an attempt at a commercial hit ;),  but why can't Nevermore get onto the same type of label as a band like Tool? There are aspects of Nevermore and certain songs they've done that could get the more exposure to the masses if a label were to take them on and push them. I keep forgetting that 'underground' metal bands like this are usually on Metal labels.

Well obviously. Those are the only labels that will sign them. If a metal band ever makes it onto a major label that deals in ANYTHING other than metal, it's usually the label "taking a chance" with a band on the off-hope that they can get some reasonable mainstream appeal. I mean, Mr. Bungle was on Warner Bros. for fuck's sake. Occasionally, the label ends up promoting them, and they hit it big with a portion of the mainstream crowd. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that for most bands that doesn't happen, and then any successful label will milk them for the rest of their contract, and them cut them loose thousands of dollars into debt from unrecouped album advances.

Interesting.

I don't really pay attention to what label releases what CD or band. I do usually recognize when I buy a CD from Nuclear Blast; my favorite band, Helloween, is on them....or was, i don't really know anymore ;p

I do wonder about Tool though. Just because they are very much a metal band. People say their first album is more tradition then the rest, but still, the biggest hit was Sober- is that a traditional song?

I don't know what label Tool is with though. Are they a case of a big label taking a chance, or just a really successful metal band with a metal label? Or a big inbetween label? idk

Tool was on Zoo for 3 albums. Seems odd until you find out that the president of Zoo was the president of Island Records (which is FUCKING HUGE) for a long time, and they were distributed by BMG, who is also huge. Chances are, the label believed in them enough to promote them like hell, and they ended up recouping BIG time, so they continued to receive support.

As i listen to their music a lot more recently, i wonder what genre Nevermore can be classed as? They definately have elements of all types, like power metal elements, doom elements, thrash elements. I have a feeling that if Warrel wasn't in the bands and they instead had a more typical metal vocalist, like a growling-type vocalist, they would be considered death metal. Vocals play a big part in genre classing, and Warrel's style makes the band very hard to class.

But honestly, I would classify Nevermore as Thrash metal. They're not totally speed metal (but have elements of it), so you can't just call them a Speed Metal band. (some people describe power metal bands as speed metal).  When I think of Nevermore i also think of bands like Megadeth, and Metallica. So I say they're Thrash metal. It's really the best term. And in that case, there should be The Big 4 of thrash- Nevermore is the 4th!!!! ;) or just replace Anthrax's spot with them ;p

I typically call them progressive thrash metal. Even so, there's a lot of elements in their music that isn't remotely thrashy at all. Probably just good old-fashioned progressive metal would make more sense.

With my job i spend a lot of time driving. I'v been listening to Nevermore A LOT. Mostly Dead Heart and TGE, because my Enemies and DNB cds disappeared. There's a big difference in those 2 albums. TGE goes back to some of their earlier stuff; it's very heavy and dark, no 'sentimental' or 'soft' moments, just heaviness and asskicking. It mixes the brutalness and dark sound of say DNB with their more recent guitar sound, creating a new Nevermore guitar sound...know what i mean? it's less metallic then DH and EoR (see earlier post about 'metallic' sound).

And Dead heart has more flow and melody overall. There's more midtempo songs, and some more 'sentimental' moments with song like Heart Collector, Believe in Nothing etc. Love the last song. fucking awesome. TGE is more brutal. I'v always preffered the sound of Dead Heart. I always attributed the DH sound to the 7 string guitar, but it was also used on TGE, right? so i really dont know what a 7 string sounds like i guess ;p

Both albums are good and sound like Nevermore, but such different sides of Nevermore. Does anyone else know what i mean about their 'metallic' sound on DH and EoR?

oh this, big time. its extreme/death metal sans extreme vox (and sans blast beats, mostly). theyre the perfect band for people that enjoy really heavy music but mostly despise growling.

Nevermore made the shift to 7-strings on Dead Heart and never went back. I also quite like Politics of Ecstasy, but for me Nevermore didn't get seriously awesome until they got that utterly crushing low-end sound they're known for. I do ever so slightly agree that Dead Heart seems a lot more "punishing" than TGE, but I think that's more of a production thing.

True of course, but then there are songs like Heart Collector or Who Decides. They're such a hard band to class in a genre.

And yea, Ultimetalhead, i agree, they didn't get really awesome until they got that sound which began with Dead Heart. It must be a 7 string? But DNB actually sounds like the guitars are lower, if memory is correct. But I guess Jeff Loomis just know to made a guitar sound right.

I first got into Dead Heart, the went back and bought DNB and was very disappointed and to this day i have yet to listen to any albums before DNB other then a few songs. I'm not the biggest Nevermore fan in the world, i'll admit, but i love them and amd still discovering their stuff. I do remember liking Sorrowed Man and Garden of Grey, which were on the early records.

So according to Warrel Dane, Nevermore is not dead, and some big names are apparently trying to replace Loomis. There was also a quote where Loomis said a reunion isn't out of the question. You can't have Nevermore without Loomis, that's just fuckin ridiculous, can't Dane see that?

And Sanctuary is getting back together and working on a new album. I'm not familiar with them other then the relationship to this band. I listened to parts of Sanctuary and didnt even recognize Warrel dane at first. At times he sounded like a Halford impersonator. Amazing how he changed his style so much for nevermore. But really, I'm not excited about sanctuary getting back together. I never listened to them. Could be good. But why would they reunite anyways? Were they big? Are there really gonna be people that care when they release something new? I'm mean, i might listen to it, but i'm not particularly caring that they're back.

Nevermore without Jeff Loomis will fail miserably. Nevermore without Warrel Dane will also fail miserably. There's simply no way around it. Both of these guys are key components of the sound, and there's no way that Nevermore can exist without them.

They have faded a bit into obscurity/cult status due to fact that they only released two albums...but *at that time* I would say they were a "west coast Overkill".   They were on a major label, they had a video on MTV, they seemed to be going somewhere...their first album was produced by Dave Mustaine...   (I think Overkill was bigger on the east coast than the west, and I think the equal/opposite would be true of Sanctuary)

I really think you should give them another shot.   Go listen to "Taste Revenge/Long Since Dark", tracks 2 and 3 from Into the Mirror Black.   It is some of the best metal of that entire era.   It's very "proto-Nevermore" and in fact, Nevermore continued to play those songs live for quite some time.

I still think Nevermore's self titled debut is very much a continuation of the Sanctuary sound, and bridges the gap perfectly between Into the Mirror Black and Politics of Ecstasy.

Bumpage due to me recently getting The Year of the Voyager.

Which is one of the best live album in the history of forever.

I hope Nevermore do come back at some stage.  It seemed with the last album they were getting a bit stale, and probably needed the time off.  I think the members should have just put the band on hiatus, instead of the whole split thing.

Paying more attention to it now, I gotta say that I'm suddenly much more excited for "The Year the Sun Died." All the reports I'm reading about it say that it sounds a lot like a blend between "Into the Mirror Black" and Nevermore's "Dreaming Neon Black" (my favorite NM album) and the low-quality live footage of those other two 'new' songs from two years ago definitely indicate that and both sound like great material too.

Not to mention the fact the band has Brad Hull in their ranks now. :metal

The Seven Tongues of God, Passenger, 42147 and The Learning are some of my absolute favourites, and the rest of the songs are really good as well. On the other hand, This Godless Endeavor has Born, Sentient 6 and the title track, so it's certainly a tough battle.

The best Nevermore, by far,  is Dead Heart In A Dead World. I loved the introduction of the seven string, the guitar work sounded so metallic, its awesome! The next best is EoR; short and sweet, just plain kickass.
I don't know what it is about Godless Endeavor, but it just doesn't do it for me like those two. I like it, but I think it goes back a bit more to being like their early stuff, and since I'm not a huge fan of those pre-Dead Heart albums I just don't like it anywhere near as much.
Am I right in thinking the guitars of TGE sound more downtuned then on the previous two, or is that in my head?

And I hope Nevermore reunites, with Loomis of course. I haven't heard the Sanctuary album, is it any good?

Godless was one of the biggest growers of an album I have ever come across.  I too always preferred EOR and Dead Heart, but as time went on I realised how amazing TGE is, it's pretty special, but certainly not as accessable as the other two.  I'd probably rank it number one these days.

The new Santuary album didn't do much for me.  It's good, but pretty generic and not that interesting IMO.    I've only become familiar with their older stuff recently and they are much better.

I dunno, I never really got into Dreaming Neon Black. It's good as a whole, but none of the songs really make an impact on their own, with Deconstruction being the absolute exception.

And that's fine for when I'm in the mood for a full album of Nevermore! But TGE and TPOE both work splendidly as albums and as stand-alone songs, so there's no way that DNB is coming out on top of that particular matchup.

For me....I Am The Dog and the title track are among the greatest "stand alone" tracks in their entire catalog.

I Am The Dog.....DAT ENDING!!!  :omg: :metal

Completely agreed. Easily Nevermore's finest hour. Nothing else from them or Sanctuary comes close.

As much as I love Dead Heart and EoR (my favorites), does anyone think that they were partly attempts to make it mainstream/commercially? Songs like Believe In Nothing, Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday, and Who Decides sound like attempts to make it into the mainstream. Nonetheless I love those songs, their some of their best. Was a huge step in the right direction for the band.

I wish Jeff Loomis would, if not reunite Nevermore, form a new band. He's better then Arch Enemy. I'm not a big fan of cookie monster vocals either. Loomis is one of the most talented guitarists and songwriters in the meta! Scene. Kind of makes me think he does plan on reuniting Nevermore.

On the self-titled, they still sounded like Sanctuary. You have "What Tomorrow Knows", "C.B.F.", "The Sanity Assassin", "Sea of Possibilities", and "God Money."

Kelly Gray fucked up the production on Enemies of Reality to such an extent that none of the songs are even listenable. Even if the production didn't suck balls, you'd still have this abrasive groove/death sound with nu-metal tendencies.

The Obsidian Conspiracy is considered their worst offering, but I find myself coming back to that one more than Enemies of Reality (which I only play for that solo on I, Voyager).

Really wish they would reform though... Warrel isn't going to proceed without Jeff (who is busy wasting his talent in Arch Enemy), so I'll just look forward to new Sanctuary.

I'd probably call it their weakest album too.  I should give it another spin.

I'd love to see Chris back in Arch Enemy and Nevermore reform.  Perfect situation.

I got bored with them when I heard Rise of the Tyrant. Even the title was uninspired considering how 70% of all media released since 2005 has "rise of the" or "real housewives of" in the title. Knowing Angela was no longer fronting them was like the final nail in the coffin but having Jeff totally changes my outlook.

Rise of the Tyrant is probably my fav, I love it.  Everything after that hasn't interested me.  The new chick is good enough but the album just didn't do it for me.  I wasn't a fan of the second guitarist after Chris left, but like you, an album with Jeff would totally respark my interest.

Enemies of Reality was the first album to come out whilst being into the band, and indeed: the first thing that I noticed was how muffled and garage-like that album sounded. Nonetheless I came to love the filthy little thrash record it is. When the remix came out, it shed a different and clearer light on it. But nowadays, if I listen to it, I'd rather have the Kelly Gray mix. Take Seed Awakening for example. That first riff is so brutal, and when the drums enter it's just insane. But on the remix, the drums sound like some VST instrument plug-in. I'd rather have something less hi-fi in that case.

Not to 'validate' my opinion or anything, but the AllMusic review actually praises the Kelly Gray mix. It's interesting.

I know the Andy Sneap once sounds better, but I'd probably chuck on the Kelly Gray one too.  I think knowing that the Sneap version is still there, you can warm to the Gray version a lot more.  At the time of release I'm not sure how it would have gone down.

EoR is my second favorite right after Dead Heart.

Honestly even though the production sucks, EoR is all killer no filler. Every song kicks ass. TGE is good but nothing compares to either Dead Heart or EoR.

EOR was my intro to them so I've never had any issues with the production whatsoever since I was just thinking this is what they generally sounded like. Even after hundreds of hours of listening to their other albums, I'm unfazed. I guess I'm lucky. And yeah, EOR and DHIADW are definitely my top two just in a different order than yours. I need to get into DNB more though since enough people dickride that so I'd imagine it may grow on me more over time.

So I've only recently gotten into The Obisidian Conspiracy more, and while I have to say that I totally understand why people don't like it as much - there's a couple songs here that are just kinda super bland, like Emptiness Unobstructed and Your Poison Throne - I do think that the best songs on this album - The Blue Marble and the New Soul, She Comes in Colors and the title track - are definitely among the best stuff that Nevermore has ever done. The title track is fucking :metal :metal :metal.

Shame, really, that they don't exist anymore. They're one band that I would have loved to see live.

Warrel Dane's voice is so drastically different then it was on earlier Sanctuary albums. His style of singing is totally different. Way more drastic of a change then even Tobias Sammet's voice change from sounding like Kiske to how he is now. Warrel sounded like Galore with a touch of Tate.

I totally agree. Not melodic enough. Nevermore needs to get back together and tour with Witherfall. Jeff Loomis and Jake Dreyer (on the new Iced Earth record as well) on the same bill would be a guitar nerds dream!

Count me in if there ever was a Nevermore/Witherfall tour.

I got into Nevermore around the time of Enemies of Reality. I saw them my first and only time one of the last shows they did on the Obsidian Conspiracy tour, and it was NOT good. Loomis wouldn't even look at Dane. And Dane was ranting from the stage and saying ship about Shepherd. It was ugly.

They did the show, but it was pretty uncomfortable watching that implosion really fester on stage.

But I hope they all can mend fences. Great band and to be honest, this is going to sound cheesy, but metal needs Nevermore. They just have such a power and uniqueness that I think is missing from a lot of the bands of the genre.

Warrel then deleted the post.  It at least confirms that the members are talking and maybe it could happen someday.

Interesting. The strange thing about that is if Jeff and Warrel felt they could pick up again full time (and that's a bit IF), they'd be just as, if not more popular than Arch Enemy. And Angela probably knows that. So if they can reconcile on a permanent basis, I doubt Jeff will stay with Arch Enemy. We'll see in the next year or so. I wouldn't be surprised if they were covertly working on an album, and planning something huge for 2018.

Devastating.  I got to meet most of Nevermore when they opened for Iced Earth back in 1999, outside of the venue.  So I got to chat with a very drunken Warrel and get his autograph, but we were all too young to get into the 21+ concert.  In retrospect, we should have snuck into the show with him (he offered to bring us in through the club's kitchen) - what's the worst that would happen?  They'd kick us out.

I was so excited to see Sanctuary open for Iced Earth in a few months, so I could finally get to hear Warrel sing.  I'm going to miss his music - he was a tremendous vocalist and lyricist.

I listened to Dead Heart in the car as well; long time since I listened to that album, or Nevermore for that matter. They were my go-to 'heavy' band when I was in high school. Although Jeff Loomis' guitar work was what sold them to me, Dane's vocals could occasionally lift the songs to higher level. I was never a real fan of his lyrics though..

Listening to TGE in the car and this stuck out;

When I'm dead will you remember all the things I've tried to say?
This cancer inside of me destroying my life, when I rot in the ground will you care?

Warrel posted this same story a year or two ago on the Nevermore forum and then deleted his post, which essentially said the same thing.  Glenn had tried to book a Nevermore reunion for Progpower USA, and the only holdup wasn't Jeff Loomis himself, but Jeff's contract with Arch Enemy....ugh.  It's cool to see that Warrel was really trying to reconnect with the band and get a reunion to happen.

I love Angela, I think she's a great vocalist, did great things for Arch Enemy and is now managing and protecting their interests, but come on!

I want to include a little confession here. I kept this secret for a long time but I doubt it can do him any harm. I want you to know that he indeed came really close to a Nevermore reunion, he had everyone on board and the only obstacle on the way was Angela Gossow. She knew that a Nevermore reunion meant Arch Enemy being left in the shadows and could possibly lead to them losing Jeff. Thus she specifically put this in Jeff's contract and kept it from happening.
Title: Re: The Nevermore Appreciation Thread
Post by: Ben_Jamin on December 15, 2017, 08:28:52 AM
Wow if that is true. Then a lot of Nevermore fans now despise Arch Enemy and Angela Gossow. I bet Jeff feels a bit hurt about it, and now who knows if he'll still be with Arch Enemy now.

Sad. But damn, we could've had a Nevermore reunion at ProgPower USA.
Title: Re: The Nevermore Appreciation Thread

The guy that wrote that post indicated his anger towards Angela in his original text.  I didn't want to include it because I get that Angela is trying to protect Arch Enemy - it's her job and she does it really, really well, and it's not fair to go after her for it.  From an Arch Enemy perspective, she was very smart to put that in his contract.

I don't see him leaving, since this story is well over a year old, and he seems pretty happy doing what he's doing.  It depends on his contract with the band and whether or not he'd leave when it's up.

It just sucks that he was contractually prevented from participating in something cool, not only for Nevermore fans, but for the band themselves.  Who knows if it would have been just a one-off show or if it led to a full-time reformation and a new record?

From what I have read it seems pointless to hold Jeff hostage. Amott said he doesn't take any of Jeff's idea's because his writing doesn't sound like Arch Enemy. Jeff has also confirmed that all he does is play solos and nothing more. He submits ideas and they have never been accepted or used. Seems like a stretch to hold onto a hired gun like that who you openly admit isn't worth more than a few solos.

With Jeff's talent, he should be somewhere he can write and be more productive. Maybe he is just using this as a break from being the main guy for awhile.

Of course, now his band is done. He has to start over.

Jeff did post that he was happy that he and Warrel had reconciled before the end.

So Sanctuary announced that they're going to go through with their US tour with Iced Earth as a farewell tour in honor of Warrel. I think that's a really great move on their part and will help let all of his fans from Sanctuary and Nevermore get one last chance to pay respects to him. :metal

And they're getting Joseph Michael of Witherfall to fill in for him on these shows!!! I really can't think of a finer choice for someone to step in for Warrel than him. Dude crushed it on Witherfall's debut album last year.

Sadly I'm gonna miss these shows, since I live in Japan now, but I really can't wait to hear Joseph's take on the Refuge Denied era stuff. It'll be neat to hear how he handles the newer stuff too, but I have faith he'll do right by Warrel and the fans. :metal :tup

I'm glad that Sanctuary is staying on the tour, though the main draw for me was obviously going to be hearing Warrel sing for the first time.  I met him once before a show in 1999, but was too young to get in at the time.  Sadly, I won't get to hear him.

But they made a great choice in Joseph Michael.  Sanctuary could have plucked anyone that could sing high, but Joseph is a fan of Warrel's first and his voice has a similar tone to it.  I'm looking forward to finally hearing some of these songs live.  I'm expecting a 60 minute set, so hopefully we get 2-3 songs from The Year the Sun died as well (FROZEN! :metal)

Was listening to This Godless Endeavour this week. What a great album.
Saw a new interview with Jeff, and he said they came close to doing a reunion show, but it didn't pan-out.
Warrel's solo band are saying they will release the album they were working on when he died. Hope they do it justice.

I am with you completely Grapp. Can't wait for the gig! Joseph Michael was an excellent choice to step in for Warrel. Should be a fitting tribute to the Sanctuary tunes.  :metal

Watching him sing for Warrel made me feel like I was watching those clips of Todd sing Crimson Glory's songs.  It was like Midnight's spirit was in there with him, and I felt the same - Joseph was just channeling Warrel's sprit and letting loose.

I've been spinning Into the Mirror Black and the Nevermore debut a lot since seeing Sanctuary.  The NM debut was just Sanctuary's demos for a third record anyways.   :)   Loved when Loomis came on stage and the drummer started playing What Tomorrow Knows.  Ha!

Yeah, I've thought back to those early La Torre performances when I watch videos of Joseph performing live with Witherfall and Sanctuary. That said, I'm tempted to say that Joseph's probably the stronger singer between him and Todd. I'm pretty sure he's a natural tenor, so those insane highs are probably a bit easier for him to reach.

But even putting that aside, what impresses me about Joseph's high screams are those bits of texture he throws in there. He really adds some extra bite to those screams, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't seem like he's using any sort of vocal technique that might damage his throat in the long run.

After seeing Joseph Michael for myself, I am blown away. Just absolutely floored. I agree with you, MG. JM is a natural tenor from what I heard. La Torre is either a high baritone or low tenor. I think he's a high baritone who can sing up there, quite like Ray Alder back in the day. But Joseph Michael is clearly a tenor with great range and character to his voice.

His performance of Battle Angels is up there with Todd's best versions of Queen of the Reich and the Crimson stuff. Simply at another level. Really cool to see it in the flesh. Knew JM could do it in studio, and in clips, but once you see him belt it yourself, it's just crazy. That early Sanctuary stuff is ear piercing, and he just nailed it.

It's a rather interesting inverse; La Torre is a high baritone singing songs originally sung by a tenor, whereas Joseph Michael is a tenor singing songs originally sung by a baritone with INSANE range. The early Sanctuary stuff is obviously impressive as hell to see JM nail, due to just how high those notes are, but considering how the bulk of Warrel Dane's career consists of music showcasing his deeper range, I'm really floored by just how great a job JM does with the TYTD-era Sanctuary material too. He doesn't try to sing as low as Warrel did, yet somehow the guy nails the same mood and character that defined Warrel's performances on those songs.

It actually reminds me a bit of Iron Maiden's early post-reunion tours and how Bruce would tackle the Blaze Bayley era IM songs, despite the different vocal range.

Travis Smith just shared this on Facebook.  Beware the automatic translation.  Shadow Work is being mastered and will be released, art from Travis Smith.  Also shared a pic of Warrel taken a month before he died.

It's nice to see that Century Media has been working with Warrel's band to get this solo album finished.  I can't wait to hear it - Warrel said that it would be heavier than his first one.

Dear Warrel,

In the blink of an eye, it's been three months since he left us in flesh and blood. I know the weather is different from here, so i think we should give you a brief update on how things are:

Shadow work will be released! We still don't have a right date and month, but we believe that at the beginning of the second semester he should paint in stores and digital platforms. All that boring, time-consuming part of the bureaucracy has already been resolved, and now we're entering the music mastering part. You had to hear how they're staying! O Wagner Realmente Sabe Das Coisas!

 - we finally finished filming that documentary that had asked you permission to drive with Renan! We believe that of raw material, we have about 1 TB of files, and of course the final part of this documentary was dedicated exclusively to you. All those involved directly on the disc left their statements, and when the final edition is aired, their fans will be presented with a rich material.

 - the arts of the disc are killer and I am very happy to be able to discuss some of the targeting with Trav Smith. I have always made it clear to you that he is my favorite artist, and being able to follow this process a little more closely is from a unique experience and learning. We have the impression that the booklet will be very robust and we will also have a vinyl version, who would say!

 - we still have to discuss the band's photos for the liner notes, since everything was scheduled for the following week of their departure. Besides, I want to keep your suggestions about our costumes. I remember you wanted to wear only black and purple, right? In addition, I believe that a clip and / or lyric video will be released, so we are still working with the guys of century media, who, in fact, at no time have abandoned us.

 - we know it's too early to think about homeagear live with some kind of show, but I believe that the short term this will be discussed internally with the band and Tiago. I know when I loved those songs, but we'll still think about it. I promise you.

Finally, as he always said to me, " don't worry too much... everything will work out!"

 See you next month, Wally.

If you check the pitches JM isn't singing different pitches. The Range is the same and melodies. Warrel just had a different timbre. No one sounds like either of them. Though the Dane influence is obvious in Witherfall.

That said, I do think Joseph Michael often sounds like the late, great singer Midnight from Crimson Glory. He's not a copycat by any means, but I think he shares a similar quality about his voice with Midnight.

Lenny and Joseph gave some pretty great news on the future of Sanctuary in this interview below!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MOBiJGjxBY

While it's not a done deal yet that they'll record a new album with Joseph at the helm, Lenny's given him some of the demos that the band was working on with Warrel before his death to see how the songwriting process goes. Basically Lenny and Joseph's decision right now is if the both of them are satisfied with the quality of what Joseph brings to the table with the demos, they'll move forward with recording the next Sanctuary album. If they're not satisfied, they'll just continue touring and doing shows and festivals for now.

So yeah, here's hoping the demos turn out great! :metal

I just watched that this morning.  It was funny to see how Joseph was telling Lenny "just trust me" when they were auditioning him for the tour.  Hearing Lenny explain how they arrived at hiring Joseph was interesting too.  I'm glad that it all worked out.  Seeing Sanctuary play live was incredible.

I don't see why the demos wouldn't sound cool, once the band is able to get past the "it's not Warrel" mindset.  Lenny alluded to that in the clip, saying that he used to work one way with Warrel and that he should be able to do something in a different manner with Joseph.

Yeah, I'm not too concerned there. Joseph seems to really dig what he's heard from the existing demos so far and he sounds pretty confident in his own ability to contribute something worthwhile to the music too, not to mention your own point about Lenny's point of recognizing that he should be able to work in a different way with Joseph too.

I'm really curious as to whether or not Joey Concepcion will stick with the band too. Dude seems like a killer guitarist in his own right.

Interesting.

Although I am absolutely positive that Sanctuary will sound amazing if the band continues on with Joseph, I'm not sure how I feel about it. If the demos turn out great, I'll be all for checking it out, and after seeing them this year, I would absolutely see them again. But just like when Layne passed away, while I support Alice moving forward, it hasn't quite been the same. Good, but for obvious reasons, it doesn't have that same feeling. I would imagine Sanctuary will end up the same way.

Plus, I want to hear Witherfall develop. And while guys balance multiple projects all the time (and have to, given the music industry and economic climate), I really want Witherfall to live up to its potential.

I mean, yeah, there's no way it'll ever be exactly the same as it was with Warrel. Hell, even Sanctuary on The Year the Sun Died was pretty different from mostly the same band on Refuge Denied, because of how much Warrel had changed over the years. It will be different. But I have a feeling it'll still end up being great stuff just the same. I'd put my money down on the end result of a Joseph Michael-helmed Sanctuary album sounding like a cross between the more modern-sounding music of TYtSD with the higher vocals on Refuge Denied.

Yeah, I do agree about making sure that Witherfall manages to live up to its potential. However I'm not too worried there. Both Sanctuary and Iced Earth are bands in the latter part of their careers, while Witherfall is a band on the rise.

Ah. The second solo album, eh? I wonder how much of it was actually finished. Hopefully enough so it isn't really doctored, and was mostly all of Warrel's decision making. I'll want it, but not if it was something half-finished and then other people made all the creative choices.

His guitarist has been quoted as saying that the instruments were pretty much done. Warrel died while he was laying down vocals. It's not clear how much of those he completed but there was some done, from what I am getting.

Came across this link regarding the passing of Tim Calvert, who played on Dreaming Neon Black.  It's a very long writeup about his time in Forbidden, but the end has a nice bit about how he joined Nevermore, wrote DNB, and then exited the band, along with how he became a pilot.

Dreaming Neon Black is still my favorite Nevermore album. Loved Calvert's work on that with Jeff. It's a shame things got messy at the end, as I'd have loved to have seen where the band might have gone with him still there.

RIP Tim Calvert.

Grapp, thanks for posting that. I knew of Tim from DNB, but didn't know any of that background. Eye opening. Really a shame he is no longer with us. ALS is a monster. My grandfather passed away from it. But he was in his 80s when it hit. My thoughts are with Tim's family and extended family. Seems like he was living his dream before it got to him. RIP.

WARREL DANE - Final Recordings Released In October!

On December 13th, 2017, the worldwide metal community mourned the passing of a truly unique voice, an extremely gifted songwriter, and above all a wonderful human being, that will be dearly missed: WARREL DANE, who died of a heart attack during the recordings of his second solo album in São Paulo, Brazil.

Renowned for his work in Sanctuary and Nevermore as well as a solo artist, in 2014 Warrel had teamed up with Brazilian musicians Johnny Moraes (guitar), Thiago Oliveira (guitar), Fabio Carito (bass) and Marcus Dotta (drums) as his touring band and ultimately this successful collaboration led to plans for a new studio album. Recordings for “Shadow Work”, the follow-up to 2008’s “Praises to the War Machine”, started in fall 2017 at Orra Meu Studio, São Paulo, and Travis Smith commenced to create the artwork following a concept and ideas previously discussed with Warrel.

After reviewing the material that could actually be completed using vocals from various studio and pre-production sessions with Warrel, the decision was made to release his final recordings as “Shadow Work”
on October 26th, 2018.

“We are looking forward to release these 40 minutes of music in October. We and many other workmates at Century Media Records have known Warrel for years, have been through thick and thin, and are fans of his art just like the many, many people supporting him since the 80s. The dedication his band, Travis Smith and our team invested in completing “Shadow Work” was astonishing and the entire record carries an eerie atmosphere of Warrel already feeling that this might be his last work. It is heartbreaking that he was right in the end. Rest in peace, friend.”
Jens Prüter, Head of A&R & Stefan Franke, Product Manager // Century Media Records

A first song and presales will be available August 31st, 2018.

Hmm. Not bad for something that generally wasn't completed, vocally. I feel kinda weird about this. On one hand, it's Warrel, and I must have. On the other hand, its a cash-grab and I feel a little guilty. I mean, it wasn't finished, and finished without Warrel's input. I'll buy it, but have reservations.

I don't feel its a cash grab. I feel a lets finish what Warrel started vibe. It sounds eerie, exactly like the album title, he sounds as if he is singing from the shadows.

On the other hand, its a cash-grab and I feel a little guilty. I mean, it wasn't finished, and finished without Warrel's input. I'll buy it, but have reservations.

I'm with Ben_Jamin on this. It doesn't really feel like a cash grab to me, but rather a means of finishing Warren's final project and help give everyone some closure. And if the rest of the album matches this song's quality, I think it'll be a fitting closing chapter in Warrel's catalogue.

Also, I'm kind of surprised at how great this whole band is. That's some of the heaviest stuff he's ever done, I think.

I don't feel its a cash grab. I feel a lets finish what Warrel started vibe. It sounds eerie, exactly like the album title, he sounds as if he is singing from the shadows.

That's a really good point, Ben. Thank you. I'll take it in that context. That helps.  :tup

That's awesome - Warrel had said that this record would be heavier than Praises to the War Machine, and it certainly lives up to it.  I don't think this is a cash grab at all and agree that the band just wanted to finish what Warrel could not.  Legal crap held up the second Control Denied record after Chuck Schuldiner's death - it's nice to see that the band, Century Media and Travis Smith (at least the parties involved that I know of) have all come together to put this album out.

One of the band members is Thiago, who if I'm not mistaken, is the same guy that put together all of that Dream Theater - ADTOE/Images & Words comparison stuff.

This single sounds promising. Even the music tries to be like Nevermore, especially the arpeggios being played during the vocals. The music sounds like Peter Wichers was not involved. He co-wrote/produced and played on the last album. Praises... was good but I found it too typically modern. (For lack of a better term.)

I feel bad for saying this, but I didn't think that was very good at all.  You can tell the vocals are chopped, stretched, altered, whatever to try and make them fit but it just doesn't sound right at all.  I don't know, I know what they are trying to do and release his music as a tribute, but it's just really disjointed and the vocals and music don't work well together at all.  I know they are working with what they have also but is it right to release this was subpar unfinished vocals?  I'm wondering if it's more respectful not to release it at all.

They just released this 11 minute making of video for Shadow Work. They had filmed footage for it before Warrel passed away and it's cool to see him working on what was supposed to be his 80 minute long Magnum Opus. Also sad because you can see how much in poor health the man was at the time.

No matter what the vocals sound like, I think the music will kick major ass.

Only 1 listen so far...
It's heavy as fuk, and the band sound like they're trying to be Nevermore, which is fine by me.
Lots of Loomis style riffing and arpeggios everywhere.
Warrell's vocals are good, just the same as we were used to.

Definitely worth a listen.

I didn't watch that little documentary, but I did skip through it a little.  Sad to see Warrel in such ill health, but you wouldn't know it based on this album.  His vocals sound great, even if they're not all final takes.  Musically, it's awesome and it's nice to hear him on some really heavy stuff again.  I'm glad that the band was able to complete what they could and release it.

Just got my physical copy. It's a really well done media book with 44 pages. Each band member gives a tribute on their credit page and Travis Smith has an essay in there paying tribute as well.

All the music was written by Thiago. Roy Z was involved in the pre-production, not sure how much but he is credited.

Just did a quick spot check and it certainly is heavy. I'll be giving it a full listen on Sunday as I have some driving to do and I can focus on it.

Four year bump and I was the last to post in this thread. lol.

I miss Nevermore. Listening to the remixed version of Enemies of Reality this morning, and man, just such a great band. The only time I saw them was on their last tour, and it wasn't a good show. A lot of internal strife on stage that was apparent. But so glad I got a chance to see them live, even if they weren't all on the same page.

Sucks that all this great music is being forgotten about. Wish Loomis would bring the band back. It'd be different, but there's no way around that...

One of my biggest concert regrets was not letting Warrel sneak us into a show back in 1999.  I'm not sure if this thread has my story or not:

In the spring of 1999, Iced Earth was touring on the Something Wicked record and had Nevermore opening.  They were playing tiny little clubs.  I went with my friends at the time - we tried to get in the front door and weren't let in because we were all under 21.

The hotel next door to the bar was where the bands were staying.  So we hung in the parking lot with some mutual acquaintances from the Chicago metal scene (primarily Neil G., the Iced Earth webmaster from that period).  All of the guys in Iced Earth and Nevermore came out from the hotel and we met them all.  Warrel was drunk off his ass and when we said that we couldn't get in to the show, he offered to take us in through the back door and walk us through the bar's kitchen.

My friend wimped out and said "I'd love to, but I really don't want to get arrested." so none of us went in and we sadly missed a badass Nevermore/Iced Earth tour, even though Warrel would have tried to get us in.  At least I have my copy of Dreaming Neon Black signed from that night.

I would pay a lot to get to see them play again.  I missed them every time they were close by, and I regret not traveling 'on a work night'.  One of my all time favorite bands - it's hard watching Jeff using his talent in Arch Enemy.  I understand why - it just feels like such a waste of his talents.

Love Nevermore!

Around the time Dead Heart came out they were one of my favorite bands. I remember liking their debut album well enough (incidentally, at the time I wasn't familiar with Sanctuary), but I felt they really kicked it up a notch with The Politics of Ecstasy (The In Memory EP was pretty tasty too). It was far from a perfect album, but I loved that they really went for it...and the guitar work was spectacular.

But then Dreaming Neon Black and Dead Heart in a Dead World solidified my fandom. The first was such a unique, heavy and dark record (the title track is such a hauntingly beautiful song) and the second, well, is an absolute metal classic to start the 2000s. A little more straightforward, perhaps, but it's hard to argue with the songs.

Enemies of Reality was a more difficult record to like, but I agree the subsequent remixed version was a big improvement. Some pretty "extreme" stuff in there...my appreciation for it has grown over time, for sure.

The Godless Endeavor is another great album. Kind of a summation of the different elements of their sound. As for the Obsidian Conspiracy - I didn't mind them going for a more streamlined approach, but it never truly wowed me the same way the other Nevermore records did. I actually enjoyed Dane's first solo record much more.

Yep, it'd be a shame if such great music wasn't played again, in some shape or form...

I've been rediscovering them also as I've used a couple of songs for a roulette.  They were monstrous.  This Godless Endeavor, what an album!

That was the tour I saw. The show in San Fran was such a bummer. I got there earlier. Said hello to Warrel as he was heading down the street and he said hello. I was one of the first folks in, got a shirt (still have it), and when they took the stage, Warrel was clearly trying to egg both Jeff and Jim into an altercation. Neither gave in, and Warrel struggled through the set. I remember being let down at the time. I barely remember the songs being played. But I'm glad, now, that I went.

As for the record itself, I'm going back through it. I like it more than I remember.

Yes, I also love Nevermore. I have to admit that Warrel's vocals took a while to grow on me but once they did, Nevermore became one of my favourite bands. Some really great stuff. Dead Heart in a Dead World is the album that made me a fan but I like all of them really and much prefer the remix of Enemies.

Totally agree with this.  But (at least for me) that was inevitable - TGE is a desert island album for me, there was very little chance they were going to top it.  TOC was still a very good album IMO, I enjoyed the change in approach.

For me, as much as I love the album, it's not quite on par with Dreaming Neon Black and Dead Heart. There's something about those that makes them "especially special". Maybe in part it's because they came first...

I think I just talked about this a bit in the consecutive albums with a drop in quality thread.  TGE is their masterpiece for me, and anything else would have a hard time to compare, but I do consider TOC underrated.  Really the whole block of DHIADW-TOC is one of the best runs in music.  Even the 90s albums are incredible.  It's unfortunate how tragically their career ended.  Warrel was such a unique voice, even though many have tried to mimic him since then.  I'm also disappointed in Michael not allowing Jeff to contribute to Arch Enemy other than solos.  This year's AE album was a step up from the previous one, and it was enjoyable enough, but it's still a far cry from the heights they could achieve if they more fully utilized the panoply of Jeff and Alissa's giftings.  Warrel's second solo album is one I want to invest more time into at some point, I just couldn't bring myself to listen to it much for the first few years because it was too painful, knowing the circumstances behind it.  But now perhaps enough time has passed that I can view it as a fitting tribute, given that it was closer in sound Nevermore than his first solo effort.

I'm still hoping Jeff's third solo album will come out at some point.  The second one I almost think of as a stealth Nevermore album, particularly the Rhoades tracks since she had a few parts on Dreaming Neon Black.  And as solid of a drummer as Williams was, Verbeuren is just on another level.

By the way, there are songs on DNB that could almost pass for darker and gloomier Queensryche songs (thinking Promised Land-era)...the title-track, certainly, but also tunes like The Lotus Eater. Dane certainly took some pages from Tate's playbook there.

Funnily enough, I've always thought the title-track from Tribe sort of came full-circle that way, with the singing influences...the start of the song, with Tate singing "the face of God", sounds a lot like Dane  ;) is it just me?

NAILED IT. That part always got me thinking "wow, I love this... what does it sound like?". DEFINITELY sounds like Warrel!

------------------

One thing I feel really fortunate for was watching Nevermore live in 2006 at a Brazilian festival. They weren't the headliners, but they packed a mighty punch and played many of my favorites like I Voyager and the title track to TGE. Best part was when it started to drizzle out of nowhere and Warrel said "We brought the rain from Seattle...". God, they were great.

After hearing that the Arch Enemy camp sort of worked against Jeff and Warrel reuniting I kind of low-key hate that band for it?  :lol  Nothing serious, but damn. Fate served Nevermore a raw deal, they really deserved better.

I wrote about this earlier in the thread at the time Warrel died, but I understand Arch Enemy's reasoning.  From what I gleaned through a long-since deleted post that Warrel made, and other statements - Jeff's contract specifically kept him from working with Nevermore again.  It isn't that Arch Enemy actively worked against Nevermore.  It's that Angela Gossow, as Arch Enemy's management, did her job to protect Jeff's position in Arch Enemy by limiting what else he can do while in their band.

From their perspective, the Arch Enemy lead guitarist position was a revolving door, with people coming in and out for years and years and years.  They landed Jeff, who wanted to be part of a band again and who is a BIG name musician, and they wanted to make sure he wouldn't be tempted to walk away from the band should Nevermore try to reunite.  They're keeping the lineup stable.  Jeff did play a song with Sanctuary in Seattle in tribute to Warrel (whether he could freely do so or whether he cleared it with management is another thing), so it's not like he can't do anything else.  He just can't do things in Nevermore while playing in Arch Enemy.

On another note, I've been playing the hell out of Nevermore for the last 24 hours.   :metal

TGE's title track is one of my favourite songs ever. Especially the bridge, I have cried when Warrel's vocals came on over these arpeggios more than I have at any other musical passage.

I probably have to admit Enemies of Reality is my favourite album, which is strange because I think it's far from perfect. But it's by far the album I play the most, and numbers don't lie!

I get it from Arch Enemy's standpoint, but that's a bullshit clause to put in an agreement. And something Jeff shouldn't have signed. He may have felt he needed to at the time. But that's all sorts of bullshit. It'd be less bullshit if they let Jeff write half the songs, but he can't do that either. So essentially, Loomis can do his solo instrumental work, but if he ever wanted to take Nevermore out of mothballs, he'd have to quit Arch Enemy to do it. Absolute bullshit unless AE allows Loomis to write and actively be a creative songwriter in AE.

Yeah, it annoys me that Jeff is basically at the hired gunslinger point of his career.  I guess he just got tired of barely scraping by with low-mid tier projects.  But at this point it's been eight years since he's done any original material, with the Conquering Dystopia project.

Yeah, I've always thought there was a bit of Queensryche vibe and influence on WD. Yeah, I hear that on "Tribe." It's been a bit since I've listened to that song. I tend to ignore the material DeGarmo didn't at least play on. But that particular track was a good one.

QR has lost that northwest thing since Mindcrime 2 in 2006. That's when outside writers began composing the tracks. But if you're not generally a QR fan, but did Nevermore's Dreaming Neon Black, everything from the EP-Promised Land might work. They aren't as heavy as Nevermore (really, a totally different subgenre, honestly), but there are some similarities at points for sure.

Yep, the title track is excellent, and in general I find Tribe (the album) to be underrated. It is my favorite of the post-HITNF and pre-LaTorre period, by some margin. It obviously can't compete with the classic period, but there are some traces of the band that I love, and I enjoy putting it on from time to time.

Agreed that the similarity is more about a certain vibe that pops up in certain songs/moments. Definitely a different genre, otherwise.

Litho - I assume you have heard Promised Land. If not, you definitely should. I have a feeling you would like it, given your appreciation for that kind of darker/melancholic approach...

Nick - if it helps:

Queensryche original lineup on Tribe:

Open
Desert Dance
Falling Behind
The Art of Life
Doin' Fine

The rest are the remaining original four without DeGarmo (Mike Stone plays the slide on Rhythm of Hope, and co-writes and plays on Losing Myself)

I tend to consider the above tracks its own separate EP (adding the song "Justified" which was written in those sessions, but not recorded until a greatest hits package in 2006). Those six songs, I consider "Tribe," where the band was together. If you A/B those tracks, and the remaining on the record, you'll likely notice a big difference in overall sonics.

Thank you - yes, I knew that DeGarmo was involved in writing/co-writing some songs and playing on the album. I remember leading up to the album's release there was some excitement building since, based on what was transpiring, there was a perception (hope?) a reunion was in the cards. Clearly, that didn't happen  ;)

I have to say...my enjoyment of the album, as it turns out, is somewhat independent of DeGarmo involvement. In fact, some of my favorite songs are not part of the EP you mention above  ;) It's not like there weren't duds but, like I said, there is plenty to like on it (more so, imo, than in their other albums of that "era")

Tribe is an excellent album.  I simply never understood the hate towards it.  The title track would have made it high on my top 40 if the album was eligible.

Pretty much feel the same here.  Would be interesting if Nevermore did reunite with a new signer.  Not sure who would replace Warrel but would be something special.  Seems like though it will never happen.

No problem. I totally get what you are saying. Of the non-DeGarmo tracks, my favorites are Tribe, The Great Divide and Rhythm of Hope. But there's a feeling of incompleteness to it. Did you know that The Great Divide was supposed to have a solo? The album got pushed back twice after DeGarmo left the sessions and the band was in disagreement on the direction. So Wilton never put down the solo that's supposed to be in the tune. He finally added it, live, on the fall 2003 tour. It's a simple solo, but very moody, and works with the arrangement of the song, taking it up a notch.

Another example is "Blood." DeGarmo allegedly had another guitar part, a counter point to Wilton's, which never got recorded. So the song is like half done.

That's why that record really feels off to me, and why I think the DeGarmo tracks truly represent where the band was going. DeGarmo gave them direction and completeness. Those tracks in that "EP" I mentioned are finished, and they feel finished. Whereas the others...not quite so much. Still cool, like I said, those three non-DeGarmo tracks I like a lot. But they are half-baked, and it's a shame. I really wish everyone was on better terms. Tribe was a loss for the record company, and who knows who owns the rights to it now since it was released on the now-defunct Sanctuary records. But with its 20th anniversary next year, I'd love to hear "Losing Myself" yanked off of it (it was only added because Stone helped them finish the record), "Justified" added, and all the parts they had had planned on recording (what I mentioned above) done by the original lineup. I have a feeling Tribe would be a lot better.

I like Tribe. With those DeGarmo tracks, there's this (I talk about this a lot) natural songwriting arc. It's like they picked back up from HITNF, got a little moodier, more aggressive riffs, and were going places I liked. Had they done the full record as they intended (DeGarmo was coming back - a disagreement between Tate, Tate's wife, and DeGarmo allegedly caused DeGarmo to pack up and leave), I think it would have been very highly regarded.

Check this out - https://anybodylistening.net/tribe.html

I wrote up the details on the whole thing and included some facts some folks may not know about the record.

It would have to be a unique singer. The guy who sings for Witherfall (who is now Sanctuary's singer) is great, but not the right vibe. But yeah, with Jeff firmly entrenched with Arch Enemy, probably never going to happen. Sucks.

My favorite non-DeGarmo tracks on the album are exactly the same as yours. And no, I didn't know about the "missing" parts from those songs - thanks for that, it's super cool to hear/read (and sad too, in a way, knowing what could've been...)

Search out Queensryche, 2003, The Great Divide, live. You'll find it. Wilton did that one in the fall of that year on the Tribe headline tour. It was only a few shows he did the solo. I want to say St. Louis could be one of them, but I don't remember exactly. But if you listen to a few during that fall run, you'll find it.

Wasn't OPEN intended to have a solo too or am I thinking that because IIRC that too because Wilton added a live solo?  That song was begging for a solo!

Same albeit Open would've been my first addition from Tribe...

And back on topic love me some Nevermore but other than some tribute shows a live setting kinda deal, much like Soundgarden think some things should be left as they are.

Dead Heart is not only a fave NM but a favorite album period \m/

I think the Witherfall singer is more suited to Nevermore actually. Listen to the deeper Witherfall cuts.

Wardy - didn't see this until now. I'm not sure, honestly. I don't remember. But I agree, it should have had one. Wilton played this little solo bit live. But it was just a quick little one, if I recall correctly.

There's something about the flow of that album that works so well.  You have highlights placed all over which makes it a consistent listen across the board.

WK - agreed completely. I noticed throughout the record that memorable melodies sprung up deep within the record. It was Nevermore's finest moment creatively, IMO.

For a long time "The River Dragon Has Come" was my goto song for testing out new headphones and sound systems.  Very few songs can do 0-100 so effectively.  I discovered it, Fear Factory's "Zero Signal", and In Flames' "Pinball Map" all within half a year of each other.  Two decades later and there aren't really many better guitar tones around.

In Flames - Pinball Map! How awesome is that song!

I find this a surprising statement.  I thought you were into Nevermore, guess I'm wrong.

Nevermore play in B flat, a seven string tuned down half a step, so yeah, pretty heavy I guess.

I'm not into Nevermore at all. For just this reason. The song you had on your Concept Album was good, but I know they're a lot heavier than that. I have the same problem with Alter Bridge.

Tim - try the second one from the album, We Disintegrate. Not that you have to like Nevermore, of course, but that one has a mix of heavy and “classic” that’s excellent.

TGE is their masterpiece IMO, but it took a LONG time to grown on me.  Besides Born, Final Product, My Acid Words, Lydia and the title track, the rest took so many listens to get me to take to them.

Virtually at the beginning of the fall semester of '05 my MP3 player went kaput, so for the next couple months until I could afford a replacement I had to go back to my portable discman around campus.  The vast majority of the time I just went back and forth between that album and Ghost Reveries
