Title: Let's help Indi make a special music gift! v. 2000
Post by: Indiscipline on July 07, 2020, 12:46:56 PM
As a bunch of you fine people (and Scenes thread regular degenerates) may know, I have a brother I can't help but love. He's going to be 50 on September the 12th, and while a big significant gift by pooling resources will be undoubtedly plotted inside the clan, I wish to make something personal for the man, music related even.

So I thought, why don't I make him a playlist of 50 songs for each of the 50 years he's been around? He used to be obsessed with music - specifically heavy metal and hard rock - when he was a boy, then he gradually lost time and interest with every child he's had (we're at four, as far as we know). I'd really love to bring him back to the time when we were listening to records together, or at least to cause a massive midlife crisis driving my sister-in-law crazy.

I'm covering 1970 - 1996 pretty fine, but bugger me if I'm able to pick 50 memorable rock/metal songs for each year from 1997 to 2020*. See where you come in play?

I'm trusting you lot way more than any website (and I mildly despise internet surfing anyway), so I'm asking if you'd like to throw my way a ton of suggestions. Think of this as a roulette, but everybody is playing in the same team, against my sister-in-law.

Let's start with 1997!

*Actually, we just need to get to 2019, which makes 50 playlists starting from 1970.

The score so far:

1997 (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=55480.msg2681583#msg2681583)
1998 (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=55480.msg2682729#msg2682729)
1999 (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=55480.msg2684037#msg2684037)

This was my favorite song of 1997 and I'm not even a big fan of Aerosmith.

Wow, 2,500 songs!

Not a lot in my collection for that year in the metal/hard rock department. I’ll throw you a couple suggestions though.

Big Wreck - That Song
Caroline’s Spine - Sullivan
Enchant - Look Away

Thank you HOF!

Every tune counts!

EDIT: I think I'm gonna gather at least 65 suggestions for each year and make a bit of selection before going to the next one, in order to both fine tune quality and add a tad of discussion. Obviously I will let you know what I picked, why, and what I think about it.

Hey Indi - no suggestions to add to the list, cause I can't think of any and that list is pretty long, but out of that list, the one that stands out to me is Du Hast from Rammstein. Honestly, I don't even like them that much, but to me that song stands out more than any of the other choices, and that's besides my love for DT and how much I like a bunch of the other songs on that list. Du Hast was pretty significant in that it got a lot of airplay (at least by me) despite all the lyrics being in German. AFAIK, they never had a hit like that again, but much like PMU did for DT, I think Du Hast put them on the radar of many people.

Oh yes, that got a lot of airplay 'round here as well at the time, and I think my bro would expect it for 1997. Gotta underline it.

Thanks for pointing that out, it flew under the radar in the flurry of submissions.

Stick around for the following years!  :tup

My brother listening to Metheny would be like a dog watching a magic trick, while Genesis (and Yes) is not his cuppa; we're already tempting fate with Marillion  :lol

ah, well that track from Metheny gets surprisingly pretty heavy at 1 point; i.e. t's not all that much like a lot of his music.

If he doesn't care for Yes and Genesis, I suppose, although that Genesis tune and that whole album has a more modern feel to it, more than any of the their previous records really.

The Mew tune is great, but also based on your comments, it may be too soft for him (namely the vocals).

Metal/rock.

He had metal tunnel vision to begin with, and age has only expanded his belly  :lol

To be fair though, as far as metal is concerned, he ranged from Van Halen to Morbid Angel.

I'm just going to go with my absolute favorites of 1997, regardless of genre and let you sift through them.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - The Dead Flag Blues (Post-rock)
Savatage - Turns to Me (Heavy/Prog Metal)
Symphony X - The Accolade (Prog Metal)
Foo Fighters - Everlong (Alternative Rock)
Enslaved - 793 (Slaget om Lindisfarne) (Progressive Black Metal)

I see Devin Townsend - Bastard was already mentioned, but that would be another one.

Edit - It seems I got beat to the punch on Turns to Me, The Accolade, and Everlong.  :lol  Well that should tell you how good those songs are.  :tup

We're throwing Big Wreck in the frey?  Sweet.

I'll choose in addition to The Oaf, I will add That Song and Under the Lighthouse.  I guess I'll also add Blown Wide Open.

Edit: Also, I guess as a superfan of a certain band.  I will add this song from where 3/4ths of that band used to be in this megahuge band.

Creed - Torn.

Alice Cooper released A Fistful Of Alice,  a live album in 1997.

It contains a studio track, Is Anyone Home, which is pretty mediocre.

But the prize of that album is an ultra rare live version of Teenage Lament.

And really, whether or not you like it, you should put a Radiohead song on there from OK Computer. It's objectively the best album ever according to RateYourMusic and lots of music nerds. And I like stirring up the pot with pointless discussions. Where's WildRanger when you need him?

Let's begin to listen!

We've got 110 songs and 60 acts.

I'm leaning towards a one song per act playlist, so my first step is to pick only one song from each of the following artists who have garnered multiple submissions:

Dream Theater: already picked. Hell's Kitchen / Lines in the Sand it is. Cheating, I know. Speaking of which, where is older bro #4?
Metallica: Fuel. Gotta be.
Queensryche: Anytime / Anywhere (over Spool). Weak sauce though, not sure it makes the next cut.
Megadeth: Trust (over She-Wolf). Not our young days' Megadeth for sure.
Bruce Dickinson: Omega (over half the album). Need a ballad, this one is excellent.
Symphony X: The Accolade (over Sea of Lies). Everytime I listen to SX I'm reminded how DT's uncanny songwriting skills are never praised enough.
Hammerfall: The Dragon Lies Bleeding (over Hammerfall). First time I listen to a song of theirs. I feel unchanged.
Savatage: Turns to You, though I could pick the whole focking album. Place assured on the playlist.
Yngwie: Only the Strong wins - after a fierce mano a mano against My Resurrection - due to pearls of tasty bluesy licks inside an ocean of phrygian dominant runs. Gotta love Yngwie.
Stratovarius: Black Diamond, because harpsichord! Not Totally Unrelated Question: what do DT and Helloween have in common?
Big Wreck: Alas, there's no chance they pass the bro test. Undrafted.
Enchant: ditto
Devin Townsend: Sorry, nope.
In Flames: Episode 666. My throat hurts.
Pain of Salvation: Nightmist, but it's a longshot. My bro doesn't like wankers, mainly because he has lived with one for 18 years.
Royal Hunt: River of Pain. Another longshot, banking on my copy of The Final Countdown LP being actually my brother's.
Rammstein: Du Hast. No doubt.
The Offspring: All I Want, by executive decision. I know, wasn't submitted, but its Motorbreath vibe gives it the best chance.
Foo Fighters: Monkey Wrench, no questions asked.
Threshold: Eat the Unicorn, by a landslide. Great riffage offsets a general sense of boredom.
Children of Bodom: Lake Bodom. Would make my playlist as well without the kobold vocals. It clinches a berth nonetheless.
Vanden Plas: You Fly, but it's in on the cusp.
Live: I may like it, my bro won't.
Silverchair: Freak (over Abuse Me), but on veeeeery shaky ground.
Grimspoon: DCx3, without a second thought
Marillion: He's literally the last person you'd give this.
Strapping Young Lad: Oh My Fucking God (over All Hail the New Flesh). Oh my focking god.

One day, and I've already missed the 1997 stop on this train.   :sadpanda:  Oh well, all the best stuff has already been mentioned.  Love to see the mention of Big Wreck, though likely not heavy enough for Big Bro.  And Vanden Plas / Rainmaker ... Top 10 Prog-metal song of all-time for me.  Maybe Top 5.

I'll weigh in when we get to '98.

Also Indi, if you're going to take a week to do each year then it won't be ready in time for September 12th. There are 23 years you need to do, and only 10 weeks to do it in. :P

Phase 1 over, gents.

We have 13 Sure Things:

Dream Theater: already picked. Hell's Kitchen / Lines in the Sand it is. Cheating, I know. Speaking of which, where is older bro #4?
Metallica: Fuel. Gotta be.
Bruce Dickinson: Omega (over half the album). Need a ballad, this one is excellent.

Rammstein: Du Hast. No doubt.
Foo Fighters: Monkey Wrench, no questions asked.
Children of Bodom: Lake Bodom. Would make my playlist as well without the kobold vocals. It clinches a berth nonetheless.
Gary Moore: Business as Usual. He needs this song at this exact stage of his life.
Testament: Demonic Refusal: I don't even need to check.
Judas Priest: Jugulator. Ditto and then some. The man just loves JP.
Faith No More: Ashes to Ashes, by royal decree.
Machine Head: Take My Scars. Like a glove.
Gamma Ray: Beyond the Black Hole. We have been two kids praying at the altar of Kai.

... And we have 42 Contenders for the remaining 37 spots:

Queensryche: Anytime / Anywhere (over Spool). Weak sauce though, not sure it makes the next cut.
Megadeth: Trust (over She-Wolf). Not our young days' Megadeth for sure.

Silverchair: Freak (over Abuse Me), but on veeeeery shaky ground.
Grimspoon: DCx3, without a second thought
Strapping Young Lad: Oh My Fucking God (over All Hail the New Flesh). Oh my focking god.
Fates Warning - APSOG #6 (We're Not Children Anymore): I want him to listen to those lyrics
Mogg / Way - History of Flames: If this doesn't make it, nothing else makes it.
Y&T - Still Falling: Very good, and can't displease the bosk.
Jag Panzer - Judgement Day: Old school has its place in this playlist.
UDO - Preachers OF The Night: like there's a reason to leave this out.
KISS - I Confess: Only if at least five songs aren't fit
Aerosmith - Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees): Don't think so.
Caroline’s Spine - Sullivan: When my sister turns 50.
Ulver - Hymn IV: Of Wolf and Man: 24 seconds.
Nightwish - The Carpenter: He might get bored
Rhapsody - Land of Immortals: Perchè no?
Dimmu Borgir - Mourning Palace: Only because he's gonna get super excited when tha first AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGHHHHH hits.
Deftones - My Own Summer: Wins the prize for #1 song I can't stand but gotta pick because the man may like it.
Edguy - Wings of a Dream: Can't see no reason why not.
Iron Savior - Atlantis Falling: Can I have this in MY playlist when I turn 50?
WASP - KFD: Kan't Focking Discard
Galactic Cowboys - Evil Twin: Almost the opposite of what he likes
dredg - Kayasuma: Among the worst four minutes stretches of my life, but I can't guarantee the bro won't dig it.
Mew - Coffee Break: He would strip me of the little one's godfatherhood
Magellan - Gameface: Loving this, must smuggle it in.
Soundscape - The God Inside: du-bee-doo, doo, doo, another one on the cusp
The Tea Party - Temptation: The Tea Party: only if we're struggling to make it to 50
Eternity X - The Edge (Suite): Great tip, but I'm staying away from the long epics for this project.
Enslaved - 793: ditto (it was impressive though)
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - The Dead Flag Blues: ditto (not so impressive though)
Incubus - New Skin: not exactly his cup, but I'm curious
Creed - Torn: Saved by the long epics

Tonight we cut 5 songs and we're good.

Y&T is safe as long as Meniketti keeps ripping.
Jag Panzer needs not to fear.

Should've been released as UFO except Mogg had an agreement with Michael Schenker that the only way an album could be released under the UFO name would be if BOTH Mogg and Schenker were on it.

I hope you give the Enslaved song a fair shot. That song takes a little bit to get going, but boy is it epic!

Same, massive Edguy fan, but it's easily their most unlistenable record imo. Yet they wrote Savage Poetry before it (technically) and that's my favorite Edguy  :lol

We have the 1997 Happy B You Dumb Mofo Playlist!

Savatage: Turns to You, though I could pick the whole focking album. Place assured on the playlist.
Queensryche: Anytime / Anywhere (over Spool). Weak sauce though, not sure it makes the next cut.
Megadeth: Trust (over She-Wolf). Not our young days' Megadeth for sure.
In Flames: Episode 666. My throat hurts.
Pain of Salvation: Nightmist, but it's a longshot. My bro doesn't like wankers, mainly because he has lived with one for 18 years.
Royal Hunt: River of Pain. Another longshot, banking on my copy of The Final Countdown LP being actually my brother's.
The Offspring: All I Want, by executive decision. I know, wasn't submitted, but its Motorbreath vibe gives it the best chance.
Threshold: Eat the Unicorn, by a landslide. Great riffage offsets a general sense of boredom.
Vanden Plas: You Fly, but it's in on the cusp.
Aerosmith - Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees): Don't think so, but saved by Ulver.
Ben Folds Five: Song for the Dumped: Last minute sub.
Magellan - Gameface: Loving this, must smuggle it in.
Soundscape - The God Inside: du-bee-doo, doo, doo, another one on the cusp
The Tea Party - Temptation: The Tea Party: only if we're struggling to make it to 50
Incubus - New Skin: not exactly his cup, but I'm curious
Creed - Torn: Saved by the long epics

I'm about to go on a long car trip, because - speaking of big b-days - there's dear lady going 70 today many miles from here. When I'm back tomorrow I will:

1. Gather all your fantastic 1998 suggestions
2. Tally the standings for contributors making the final cuts. I'm giving a prize at the end of this journey.

1998 is on.

The closing trilogy wouldn't work so well for this situation I don't think. WTF is wrong with your ears? Burning Times is great, Hammerfall sucks  :lol It was the second song I learned how to play on electric guitar.

This was funny but I could swear 98 was a good year for metal but yea, apparently it's pretty thin in terms of good albums, atleast for me. Lots of debuts and early albums from soon to be great bands though.

Ayreon - Across the Rainbow Bridge
Soilwork - Steelbath Suicide
Amon Amarth - Ride For Vengeance
Edguy - Vain Glory Opera
Arch Enemy - Tears of the Dead
Hammerfall - Dreamland (Killer album, damn that was hard to choose. Not the most popular but I have a thing for this song.)
Blind Guardian - Mirror Mirror
Fear Factory - Shock
Bruce Dickinson - Chemical Wedding
Iced Earth - Birth of the Wicked
Iron Maiden - The Clansman
Meshuggah - New Millennium Cyanide Christ (When you listen to this and compare it to anything else that year it's just mindblowing how good this is if you ask me)
Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar
Monster Magnet - Powertrip
Nightwish - Gethsemane
Opeth - Demon Of The Fall
Rhapsody - Emerald Sword
Symphony X - Smoke and Mirrors
Therion - The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah

Some of my favs from 1998:

Angra - Rainy Nights
Blind Guardian - Blood Tears
Borknagar - Oceans Rise
Eldritch - Bleed Mask Bleed (your countrymen)
Katatonia - Instrumental  (I'll be sending them every year when applicable, so I thought I'd start with something short, a little interlude on your mixed album)
Labyrinth - The Night of Dreams (more Italians)
SX - Church of the Machine or Through the Looking Glass
Threshold - I don't really want to pick so I'm listing options: Freaks or Angels for something short(ish), Voyager II for something long, or Sunrise on Mars for a ballad

I'm honestly surprised that you approved Creed's Torn.  That's good for me, because then I can go ahead and post some songs from that other band after Creed wasn't working out, but we'll get to that later.  Anywho, 1998.  That wasn't really a barnburner year for rock/metal as far as I know.  Also, Iron Maiden's The Clansman was already mentioned.  However, I took a look and I found this gem from this band whose lead singer was about 6 years away from striking huge with another band.  If you don't approve the vocals of this band, well, I'm probably screwed when we get to 2004-onwards.

The Mayfield Four - Don't Walk Away.

Oh shoot, wait.  I know this song.  I hear it all the time in Sirius XM Turbo.

Monster Magnet - Space Lord

Blind Guardian - Nightfall
Devin Townsend - Bad Devil
Iced Earth - Melancholy (Holy Martyr)
Opeth - April Ethereal
Opeth - Demon of the Fall
Pain of Salvation - Handful of Nothing
Shadow Gallery - New World Order Stiletto in the Sand/War For Sale
Spock's Beard - Harm's Way

Dammit I come back in for the 1998 and some people have made like 20 suggestions again.

I feel like this would be a bit more fun if there was a max number of suggestions per person, particularly if you're doing this which does sound like a cool idea:

2. Tally the standings for contributors making the final cuts. I'm giving a prize at the end of this journey.
But with unlimited suggestions per person, that'll only encourage people to suggest EVERYTHING even more. :lol

What do I win?

Still nothing. You gotta stay on top when 2020 is wrapped up.

Then I'll send you a gift, and my bro's next child will be named Kade

Holy shit, nah don't fucking do that mate.  Don't ruin his life like that, trust me lol.

:lol

As always you are the voice of reason, but I really don't have it in me to regulate help.
That's fair. :lol

In that case, can I make a plea for kindness and ask people to voluntarily try and keep to like 6 or 7 suggestions, at least initially, to give the rest of us a chance? :P

Yeah I've already given up seeing people already in the double digits. No hope for me, clearly my tastes will not work here lol

Maybe each person is only allowed to suggest a certain number of songs?  May take a little longer but will make it fair across the board.

That was my suggestion but I completely appreciate Indi doesn't want to have to police it. :lol But it would be really cool if people could limit themselves voluntarily for, say, the first 24 hours of each year, just to give others a chance to post their top suggestions. And then after that a free-for-all.

By doing that, Alex will still get a shitload of suggestions in that first day, and then some extra top-up ones after, which wouldn't really be any different to how these first two years have gone. So I don't think it would hold anything up. :)

I'm sure everyone can take it upon themselves to post like 10 initially and then fill in the gaps once everyone has had a crack.

I'm open to anything; if you guys wish to police yourself, go ahead. I just can't do it because: A) who the heck regulates his own request for help and the kindness of buddies? B) Don't want to treat this as a competition if not as a gimmicky unconsequential consequence.

Totally fair! But I can't stress enough the fact this is a collaborative effort first and a facultative silly competition as a byproduct.

Yeah I've already given up seeing people already in the double digits. No hope for me, clearly my tastes will not work here lol

And that's what I was afraid of. Please, bud, don't stop on account of that. The help in itself is what's really invaluable for me; the silly standings are there as funny stimulus, if they're somehow offputting, then they're out of the picture.

Ok, while gathering 1997's final cut contributors I noticed something got lost from paper to bbcode:

Mew - Coffee Breaks gets subbed by Ben Folds Five - Song for the Dumped due to lyrics' value (he wouldn't care for both musical contents anyway)

Final Cuts Submittors Standings (1997):

wolfking: 12
MrBoom: 11 1/2
TAC: 10 1/2
Soundscape: 5
king: 4
Elite: 2
Anguyen: 1

Hey, he'd be my bro's son and my nephew. Can't get worse than that!

Let's begin the reductio ad unum for 1998, which apparently means listening to a whole Iced Earth album for starters.  :omg:

Blind Guardian: Into the Storm. Must follow the will of the world.

Anathema: Fragile Dreams. Will need to fight for its place.
Obscura - Obscura: Can't find it anywhere. Help!

Bruce Dickinson: Chemical Wedding (over Book of Thel), the phaaaaaaaantom of the opera is here, inside your mind.

I'm Facebook friends with him and find myself agreeing with a lot of the non-music stuff he says but musically he's super smart and loves chatting about all aspects of it. Very cool guy.

Devin Townsend: Bad Devil, cute. Not bulletproof though.
Phantom's Opera: Heartache. Extremely risky.
Power of Omens: Alone I Stand. Everything I hate in prog metal, but some drumming he really needs to hear.
Spock's Bead: June always makes my playlist, but not the playlist for a man whose greatest musical sin is not understanding The Beatles.
Trans Siberian Orchestra: Appalachian Snowfall. Doesn't beat Stiletto in the Sand as token instrumental intro.
Von Groove: All for Rock'n'Roll. I'd really love to smuggle this slice of 1986 inside 1998.
Stabbing Westward: Save Yourself. Don't want to get stabbed inward.
Korn: Freak on a Leash (over Got the Life), by virtue of the scat section.
King's X: Groove Machine. No doubts about this.
Helloween: Midnight Sun (over Hey Lord), it should have made the United setlist.
Hammerfall: Heeding the Call (over Dreamland), it should have made the United ripoff setlist.
Soilwork: Entering the Angel Diabolique. Now I've got the instrumental outro.
Amon Amarth: Ride for Vengeance. Sure. Holy shit though.
Edguy: Out of Control. I'm warming to these guys.
Arch Enemy: Bridge of Destiny. Absolutely wonderful. There, I said it.
Fear Factory: Shock. Don't like it, he does.
Iron Maiden: The Clansman, over Women in Uniform.
Meshuggah: Corridor of Chameleons (over New Millemmiun Cyanide Christ). Not sure bro is a djentleman, but he should dig the heaviness.
Metallica: Whiskey in the Jar. Overruled, because the best version is already on playlist 1972. Let's Turn the Page.
Monster Magnet: Powertrip (over Space Lord). Rocks hard enough.
Nightwish: Gethsemane. In, knowing he can't hear those couple of one comma flat spots.
Symphony X: Smoke and Mirros, over longer and more boring stuff.
Therion: The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah. Tell you what, yes.
Angra: Rainy Nights. Tell you what, nah.
Borknagar: The Black Token. Goblins everywhere.
Eldritch: Bleed Mask Bleed. Doesn't hurt.
Katatonia: Instrumental. Sorry, Lethean.
Labyrinth: The Night of Dreams, tiptoeing on the ledge.
Threshold: Freaks, over half album. Not so hot though.
Enchant: King. Not gonna make it.
Van Halen: Fire in the Hole. That fat outro forced this in.
The Mayfield Four: Don't Walk Away. Myles is the best of his generation, but this will kill bro.
Pain of Salvation: Handful of Nothing. Two clues make one proof. Not fit for this.
Chroma Key: Colorblind. Maybe a different brother.
Primal Fear: Chainbreaker. Judas Priest always gets you in this.
Virgin Steele: A Whisper of Death, easily in.
Grave Digger: Knights of the Cross. Clinch.
Axel Rudi Pell: Carousel. Can't say no.
UDO: With a Vengeance, literally.
Motorhead: Better Off Dead. 1.5 seconds were all I needed.
Freak Kitchen: Mr Kashchei and the 13 Prostitutes. Already certified awesome, too bad he won't spot the noble reference.
Marylin Manson: Rock Is Dead (over Mechanical Animals), has a slim chance.
The Offspring: The Kids Aren't Alright. Not submitted, by executive decision.
Pearl Jam: Wishlist. As above. I know, but the sister in law has a Wishlist verse tattoed on her shoulder. Gotta throw her a bone.
Joe Satriani: Crystal Planet. Gorgeous, but not a total lock.
Slayer: Point (over Bitter Peace). Sure, in, but bleargh.
Anthrax: Born Again Idiot (over Killing Box). No problems.
Uriah Heep: Everything in Life. Gotta love them.

Let's unleash hell for 1999, my friends, knowing two spots are already taken:

Dream Theater: The Spirit Carries On, which he must get someone to play at my funeral if he survives me.
Muse: Uno. I will make him love it.

I'll keep my list fairly short - my 1999 library is kinda unremarkable.

Consortium Project - House of Cards ; or if you want a power ballad, A Miracle Is All We Need
<be ready for four more suggestions from Consortium Project - it's a 5-album Pentalogy>
DC Cooper - The Angel Comes
Evergrey - Nosferatu
Kamelot - Nights of Arabia
Luca Turilli - Lord of the Winter Snow  (I'll let the Walrus make the Rhapsody recc'n)
Royal Hunt - Lies
Spock's Beard - Day For Night (had to... it was my intro to SB)
Vanden Plas - Kiss of Death (yes, that Kiss of Death)

Did you check Anthrax’s Catharsis Alex? It’s one of their best Bush Era tracks.

I mean, how can anyone turn down Bush?

Or if you're looking into adding a couple of ballads (not power ballads, just excellent ballads) to the list, I suggest Kamelot - A Sailorman's Hymn which I think is amazing.

Ahhh, 1999.  Now we're closer to the stuff I used to listen to as a kid when my older sister was probably blasting KROQ (local LA alt rock radio station) or random CDs.  Found a lot of stuff.

Switchfoot - Sooner or Later (Soren's Song) or Company Car
Staind - Mudshovel
Blink 182 - What's My Age Again, Adam's Song, or All the Small Things (all three are major staples from KROQ)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff or Nookie
Sevendust - Denial, Waffle, or Home
Bush - The Chemicals Between Us
Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly (that's probably the key song from them from this album, but I'll also suggest either Aurora or M.I.A)

Creed - What If

Right, I forgot about What If.  I was thinking "Are you Ready?" for the Human Clay selection, because we are not picking Higher or With Arms Wide Open for this playlist.

Ok Chad, Tim and Ang kept to 8 artists so I'll do the same, and just one song each:

Engine - Alone
Foo Fighters - Breakout
Gamma Ray - Send Me A Sign
In Flames - Ordinary Story
Opeth - Moonlapse Vertigo
Rage Against the Machine - Sleep Now in the Fire (absolutely iconic)
Silverchair - Anthem for the Year 2000
Sinergy - Beware the Heavens

EDIT: Also I was going to suggest Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder instead of one of these, but Tim beat me to it. I hope that, despite the vocals, even you will enjoy the solos Alex.

It's a lot easier on the ears than Death. Although musically, it's nowhere near as progressive. But I still have a hard time making it through a Death album because of the vocals. At least with Control Denied, I could enjoy Chuck's music.

If I want to hear some Death, I usually pull up the Eindhoven show on Youtube. For some reason, the vocals don't seem quite as harsh.

Which could very well be the best thing ever 'cause Death without orc vocals is a Top 10 heavy metal band IMO.

Pretty much the same for me. Right around 2004 I started digesting much more music. Plus there's so much great music throughout the 2000's in general.

Let the combine begin:

Consortium Project - House of Cards (over A Miracle Is All We Need). Very nice, nothing to fear.
DC Cooper - The Angel Comes. No need to worry.
Evergrey - Nosferatu. Solid seems to be the recurring theme so far.
Luca Turilli - Lord of the Winter Snow. He liked the first Zelda very much.
Royal Hunt - Lies. If this is this year's level, I'm gonna struggle to scratch stuff.
Spock's Beard - Day For Night. Big Neal fan here, but bro is hopeless.
Vanden Plas - Kiss of Death, since it didn't make 1987.
Kamelot - Nights of Arabia. Thery could have kept me in the metal game.
Nevermore- Beyond Within. In the bank.
Filter - Welcome to the Fold. The Mendoza Line.
Creed - What If. The new Mendoza Line.
311 - Come Original. The first straight elimination. I feel better.

Well, in all fairness, and I say this as a guy that does not care much for Creed, but loves that band that 3/4ths of the guys from Creed is in.  If you avoid songs like Higher, With Arms Wide Open, and My Sacrifice and listen to stuff like Torn, Pity for a Dime, What If, Are You Ready, then they have a solid sound that represents the late 90s well.  It has that mainstream alt rock grit to it if that makes sense.  It sounds like an oxymoron, but it makes sense to me. I know it's hard for people to avoid Scott Stapp's voice and actions that would plagued the band's reputation forever, but the instrumental side of things is solid and something no one ever talks about when they talk about Creed.  They always talk about things involving Scott Stapp, but they never talk about the musicial side of it.  Heck, people love Alter Bridge, but would love nothing more than to see Mark Tremonti have that guitar tone from Creed in AB's music nowadays.

For me, I'm not picky about guitar tones so I'm like ehhh when it comes to that stuff.  Just give me good riffs and awesome solos and I'm a happy guy and Tremonti have done that in abundance for the last 25 years or so.

Ang..guilty! :lol

I hear you about Tremonti's tone. I have tried hard on Alter Bridge. But I find both Tremoni and Kennedy at the very low end of what I can tolerate as far as tone. Of course I'd still take Kennedy a thousand times over Stapp.

I like to make fun of Creed as much as the next guy, but they did at least kind of carry a torch for heavy music in the popular sphere for a few years without slapping a lame rap or a record scratch over it. I don’t own it, but I remember the first album being solid. I also remember being like “hey, a guitar solo on the radio!” when With Arms Wide Open came out.

Scott Stapp did write the funniest song ever with Marlins Will Soar though.

I prefer them because it shows James' vocal range. His later albums, while musically really strong, just don't do anything for me vocally.

I don’t listens to them often (and forgot about them for this exercise because I apparently don’t have the first album ripped to my laptop), but I do like how well some of those songs fit James’s voice. Shores of Avalon is a good example. A Simple Man is another.

What was wrong with Peter's drumming? I guess you might mean that his drumming didn't suite DT which I agree on however imo he's great on those albums. In general he's an awesome drummer and the stuff he plays with his main band Darkane is very creative.

Edguy - Frozen Candle
Iron Maiden - Ghost of the Navigator
Fates Warning - Pieces of Me
Jørn Lande - The Day The Earth Caught Fire (it's a cover but rocks) OR Gate of Tears for an original
Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory
Helloween - Mr. Torture OR Deliver Us From Temptation if it's available
Stratovarius - Phoenix

I’ve been sending Caroline’s Spine, who are a lot like Creed in some ways but with a sense of humor and less into themselves.

Decent band.  Roy Thomas Baker, who produced Queen, Journey, The Cars, etc, also produced one of their albums.  They were promoting it when they opened for Queensryche during the HITNF tour.  I really enjoyed their performance.

I have that album but didn’t even realize Baker produced it. I remember them getting some airplay where I lived back before they were signed, so I’ve got some nostalgia for them as a group I knew before they were somewhat famous. Jimmy Newquist knows how to write a solid rock song at least, and their drummer Jason Gilardi was pretty good too. Newquist is still releasing music under the moniker but I think the rest of the original lineup has been replaced.

Demons and Wizard - Fiddler on the Green
Elegy - Force Majeure
Erik Norlander - Rome is Burning <or> Lines in the Sand.  Keyboard led, so I don't know if it'll make the cut.
Jorn - I second Katt's reccomendation
Magnitude 9 - The End of Days
Nocturnal Rites - Hellennium
Rhapsody - Dawn of Veeektooorrrreeeeeeee (which requires Lux Triumphans as a setup)
Symphony X - Evolution (The Grand Design)... though, you can't go wrong with any of the main tracks from The New Mythology Suite.

Also, not sure if you caught it Alex, but you've got Evergrey twice on the '99 playlist.  Not sure if you're trying for 50 unique bands for each year.  I doubt you'll get 50 unique bands year-over-year, cuz too many will show up on subsequent albums.

Ayreon - The New Migrator (Decided to pick not the most popular on that album, however I think it's killer though!)
Devin Townsend - Kingdom
Hammerfall - The Way of the Warrior
In Flames - Bullet Ride
Linkin Park - One Step Closer
Pantera - Revolution Is My Name
Symphony X - Egypt
Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man

No sure how I skipped over Ayreon - must've scrolled right to the "B"s by accident.  Anyway, you definitely want something from The Flight of the Migrator; The Dream Sequencer is all prog and no metal.

My recommendation is either Dawn of a Million Souls (Allen), or Into the Black Hole (Dickinson).  Chaos is a great instrumental too.

I like your thinking MrBoom.  FYI, Alex... Ian Parry is the vocalist on The New Migrator - same guy that was in a band with Arjen in the mid 80s (Vengeance); writer/composer/vocalist of The Consortium Project albums; and vocalist on the Elegy album/track I recommended.

Though you may find your service restricted at some point, as post's do have a character limit. So you may prefer to include links to the post that has the playlist for each year instead, either now or when it gets to a point where it no longer lets you add more!

Also, not sure if you caught it Alex, but you've got Evergrey twice on the '99 playlist.  Not sure if you're trying for 50 unique bands for each year.  I doubt you'll get 50 unique bands year-over-year, cuz too many will show up on subsequent albums.

Can't happen. Replaced it with Def Leppard. Thank you!

Disturbed - Down with the Sickness or Stupify
Linkin Park - In the End (because it's the well-known song) or Points of Authority
Papa Roach - Last Resort or Between Angels and Insects
Switchfoot - Learning to Breathe (probably will get rejected, I'll keep trying to see one of their songs will stick)
Three Doors Down - Duck and Run or Kryptonite
Matchbox 20 - Bent
Limp Bizkit - My Way (probably will be a get you punched song, but I got to give a shout-out to the Wrestlemania 17 Theme song).
Iron Maiden - The Mercenary

Fun year.

Beer for Dolphins - Ankle Bracelet
Enchant - Rough Draft
Geddy Lee - Grace to Grace
King’s X - Smudge
Kip Winger - Cross
Mr. Big - Static
Platypus - 25

As an aside, 2000 was a pretty fantastic year for music (though some of these I didn’t get until a few years later). Some albums from that year, many of which were pretty important for me as far as developing my tastes and interests:

Beer for Dolphins - Dancing
Chroma Key - You Go Now
King’s X - Please Come Home... Mr. Bulbous
Kip Winger - Songs from the Ocean Floor
Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
Radiohead - Kid A
Spock’s Beard - V
The Flower Kings - Space Revolver
Transatlantic - SMPTe
U2 - All That You Can’t Leave Behind

I loved that album. Last really cool thing King’s X did IMO (the next couple albums were solid though).

I was actually thinking on picking Chaos, such a great and explosive opener. +1 for including a drumsolo!

Less known but Keiko Kumagai (Ars Nova) plays a key solo on The New Migrator.

Forgot Enchant released Juggling that year (laptop has it as 2010 cause it’s a reissue/remaster). None of my Enchant suggestions have gotten any traction, but that’s yet another great album from 2000.

Transatlantic - We All Need Some Light, wild card
Racer X - Let the Spirit Fly, wild card.

Iron Maiden -  The Wicker Man (over Ghost of the Navigator), truer to the Maidens we love.

Jørn Lande - Gate of Tears (over The Day The Earth Caught Fire). Rocks harder.
Rhapsody - Lux Triumphans / Dawn of Victory: Makes you wanna burn villages down.
Helloween - Mr. Torture, it doesn't get funnier than fun mode Helloween.
Stratovarius - Phoenix. In. Utterly unoriginal, but in.
Alice Cooper - Sanctuary. I have no recollection of a heavier Alice.
UFO - Fool's Gold. He just has to hear UFO playing a bit in 15/16.

Hammerfall - Keep The Flame Burning, The Way of the Warrior
Motorhead - Wake The Dead
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper, Everytime I Die

Bus is no more allowed. Covid's blessing in disguise.

Indi sleeps under the stage 6 feet apart from everybody for the next 3 months.

Those 6 feet are the reason I'm working around the clock right now. Everyone on stage must be at a safe distance, every entrance/exit must be isolated, the stage props handling is a chess game.

Are there stage productions happening somewhere in the world right now?

I guess so. I'm doing it now in Italy and will do it in France in august. I guess the sudden (and extended) hard lockdown leaning more on life rather than economy is helping the economy right now. However, as far as my trade is concerned, shows are few and uber-surveilled, with smaller audiences, and often double-featured without doubling the fee.

How on Earth can they handle stage props unless they're disinfecting every time someone touches them? I wonder how you can stay at a safe distance with you opera types singing loudly and contorting your mouths into wide shapes  :lol

Gloves. Plastic ones for the grunt guys, costume gloves for us. I'm reducing use of objects to the bare minimum though.

Everything (from seats to mics) is sanitized between shows. This small show I'm doing this weekend (on Puccini's life) for example is performed from 20:30 to 21:00 on a stage in the town's main square, 20 minutes transition, continues from 21:30 to 22:00 inside a near villa's garden (while they sanitize the town square's setup), 20 minutes transition, then it ends from 22:30 to 23:00 back on the first stage. Artists and audience move, 2 different tech crews.

It takes a lot of time to set up, hence my recent disappearance  :D

So we have to do years 2000-2019.

What if we do it for him?

What if we each take a year, or two?

Everyone should prepare a list of 8 to 10 songs for each year, and whoever is in charge of that year puts the list together?

So for example,

Each of us will post 8 or so songs for 2001, 2002, 2203, and so on.

Let's say Chad has 2001. Chad will compile a Top 50 for that year. Let's say Ariich has 2002. Rich would then compile a list from the suggestions for 2002.

I think everything would have to be on Spotify, no?

What do you guys think?

We can compile suggestions for each year prehand about let's say 60 for each year, that way Indi just needs to listen to 1140 songs in one go, easypeasy.  :lol

*Not entirely serious

I get it. It's fun as all hell but let's not push Indi for our own needs.

You drunk? I don't have any needs. Just an idea to help. That's all. Man, I didn't think it would be so controversial.

Lol. Not drunk. Everybody seems so impatient for Indi to start this up. It isn't even a game.

This is the main reason I haven't run a Roulette.

I think you totally misread my intentions.

I'm not impatient at all, honestly. I don't view it as a game. I'm not jonesing for the "next" year to post suggestions.

I was just offering to a way to help him accomplish what he set out to do. Seems he may be pushing the deadline. That's all.
Just trying to be thoughtful.

You fucking pessimistic library!

You haven't run a roulette because people are impatient?

Apologies, guys. I'm having a hell of a time setting things for the France show in motion, and said things are getting a little bit ugly (people - and friends -  fired for refusing to work with masks on and whatnot). Forced vacation was less stressful, in a way.

Nonetheless, I really feel guilty for leaving you hanging this way after the wonderful effort you put out. Rest assured I'm not giving up, and should the deadline come too fast, I have a beautiful plan B: giving my bro one playlist every day starting from 9/12, therefore gaining at least twenty days of breathing room.

Tim and Kade, I am really moved by the idea you had. Very thoughtful and noble. I do thank you, big guys, as I thank Joe and Chad not agreeing with that idea for equally thoughtful and noble reasons, and everybody else for trying to troll me back

I think I can restart tomorrow with 2000's results.

Yeah.  100%

I know for a fact that I wouldn't keep up with one round in 5 days to a week.  So yeah, that's why.

I think you if made it clear from the start that you won't keep up with a set routine or something, we wouldn't care and still happily participate.

Yeah. It's your roulette. You're setting the rules and timelines, not the participants. If you're clear from the beginning that the rounds will take two weeks, then it's two weeks. Everyone who doesn't like it can just skip your roulette and that's it. I know I'll definitely play.
