Just curious your opinions on which of these (somewhat similar) bands you like most. If not familiar with one or more of them just pick your favorite of the ones you know. By the way, I think Andromeda, CM and Riverside are similar while SX is not like the others but I included them because they're approximately at the same popularity level.
I like all 4 of these bands a lot. SX was one of my favs for a while, then I enjoyed CM but have been getting into Riverside lately and find them to be really strong. Curious if people share my current enthusiasm for Riverside.

riverside is the only one i'm particularly fond of and even then they've fallen off in the last decade

I too have to go with Riverside. Even though I haven't really liked all of their stuff over the last 10 years, like Cyril alluded to.
I do like all three of the other bands, but not nearly as much.

Circus Maximus just sounded way too bland from what I've heard.
I have two Andromeda albums and they're....fine, but pretty prog/metal by numbers.
Riverside also sounded fine but nothing special, but I haven't heard a lot.
Symphony X it is!

I'm curious what you've heard of Riverside. They're very inconsistent for me and have several albums that sound nothing alike. Some of their albums I don't like at all, and a couple others I think are really awesome. I think Love, Fear, and the Time Machine is my favorite because it has this gorgeous serene quality to the music that I don't hear on any of the other records; ADHD is an aggressive progressive metal record with some really heavy moments; Wasteland is more depressing than your typical Katatonia record; Second Life Syndrome and SONGS do absolutely nothing for me... Pretty fascinating that a single band can cover so much ground.

It's funny you say that because for me it's almost the other way around. I kinda think every Riverside album sounds the same except for ADHD which is more prog metal where the others are more prog rock. I don't even mean anything negative by that, I like Riverside and I like their albums, but for me they are definitely a band that has a 'sound' that they mostly stick too. Other than ADHD which does have heavier guitars than the rest (which are more mellow).

I’m not a huge prog fan so Symphony X, followed by Circus Maximus.

I really liked CM when they released their debut, and liked their follow up even more. I have their two other releases, but they are vastly inferior to their first two.
Highly enjoy S-X material between Damnation and Odyssey. I have listened to some stuff they've released since, but it didn't grab me enough to pursue it further.
What little Riverside I've heard I didn't care much for.
Not heard any Andromeda. Been listening for the last 10 minutes or so, and seems worth checking out.

I agree with that actually. They have a certain sound that is noticeable on every album, but it feels like a lot of the albums have a different atmosphere they try to set. I really like the keyboard lead patch on ADHD, it's smooth but has just enough bite to be aggressive, and it's heavy.

I really like Circus Maximus's album Isolate, but haven't had much interest in the rest of their stuff. I guess I'll go with Riverside because overall their work is more interesting to me.
Symphony X I have one album of and never listen to, Andromeda I've only heard of.

Not familiar with the first two. Riverside for me, although I do like a fair amount of Symphony X. But when Russ started adding more grit to his vocals and they went in a heavier direction, I lost interest. But I love TDWoT, Twilight in Olympus and especially V.

Never heard of Andromeda.
Riverside never got enough love- they have at least 2 albums that are better than anything Haken has done.
Symphony X and Circus Maximus are awesome, but honestly I don’t really take them seriously...more of a guilty pleasure and when I need my fix of guitar porn.

I only recently started listening to riverside. Their first 2-3 albums seem to be better than their more recent stuff. I'm extremely impressed by Second Life Syndrome. To me, it's a masterpiece

Riverside and it wasn't close. Once upon a time maybe it would have been, but Riverside is one of my favorites and Symphony X has fallen off.
Right now I'd say:

Andromeda
Symphony X
Circus Maximus

I will out myself and say I think almost all Symphony X before Paradise Lost is unbearable, whereas their last 3 albums are totally awesome, so they'd be my #2 here

I disagree with the bolded. I think of the four, SX and Circus Maximus are the most similar. In fact I think CM has, um, borrowed from SX a good bit.
But I do totally share your enthusiasm for Riverside. :)

Symphony X.
I like Riverside quite a lot but until now I only know like three albums by them. Symphony X has shaped my musical taste after I got into DT and prog around 2006/07. There are many bands I like more than Symphony X, but of these, they're my favourite.
I know and like the first two Circus Maximus albums. I have great memories of their first album because I used to listen to it during my exchange year in Argentina 2010/11.
I have never heard anything by Andromeda.

While I'm by no means a fan, I think Symphony X up until (and including) Paradise Lost, while cheesy still did their thing pretty good. But i remember thinking the one after Paradise Lost was really painful to get through because the guitars were tuned to sound like a machine or something and the 'heavier' tuning just had a negative impact on their sound IMO. The earlier stuff is most definitely cheese but I can see why people would get something out of it more - even if me myself is fairly neutral.

I like some songs by CM and SX but Riverside is in the other league for me. Hopefully I'll see them live one day.
I don't know Andromeda though.

Riverside easily. CM I still like though I don't listen to them very often. Andromeda I used to like quite a bit back in the day. There was a time when I liked Symphony X, but that was a long time ago

Riverside for me, they are consistently good with all their albums, except the last one Wasteland, which to my ears is nowhere near as good as anything else that have done.

Responding to both; Paradise Lost was the album that got me 'into' Symphony X when it was released in 2007. I was in high school and thought what they did was awesome. I have fond memories of this album in particular. Checking out their previous work, I dug The Odyssey and Divine Wings of Tragedy the most. I could never get my hands on 'V: The New Mythology Suite'. A shame, because years later when I finally decided to get that one after Iconoclast was such a huge let-down I think V became my favourite SX album. I haven't listened to Iconoclast since it was released basically and kind-of lost interest in the band (I only listened to their latest one like once), but Paradise Lost is one I occasionally enjoy for nostalgic reasons and and V contains some of their best work as far as I'm concerned.
Definitely an inconsistent band as far as their studio output is concerned (I think), but some of the things they do, they do really well.

I think I’ve had 3 Symphony X albums over the years and just found them too cheesy which is strange as I like a lot of cheesy stuff.
My brother bought me a Riverside album at Xmas called Love, Fear And The Machine. I haven’t spent a whole lot of time with it but it sounded like an even more dull version of Marillion when they do dull stuff.
Not heard Andromeda.
Really liked first 2 albums by CM. First one is almost a DT tribute album but, whilst not at DT level, I enjoy it. Second album pulls more from a variety of influences and I think is a really good melodic rock/prog metal album. Third album is not bad by any means and has some brilliant stuff on but also some average stuff. It’s Circus Maximus by some distance for me. Their last album was boring as hell though.

Symphony X. Russell Allen is incredible.
Circus Maximus' first two albums are great, then they completely lost me and I've had zero interest in them since. Except for the retro EP that they released not too long ago, with unfinished songs from those first two records. :biggrin:
