Jordan Blum examines Dream Theater's astonishing output (and the behind-the-scenes circumstances), in order to explore how DT distinctively impacted the Progressive genre with each its landmark releases.
-
Was wondering when this would be announced. Looking forward to checking it out! When it says "Every Song", I wonder if that will include all non-album tracks, too. My gut is that it will only be what was released on an album. Will have to drop Jordan a line and find out....
-
Scott, is Jordan Blum known to the rest of us? Between GDT, Voices UK, and DTF, have I run into him?

I don't think so. I hadn't heard of him until a fellow GDT'er had introduced me to him.

I see what he did there.

Will this book have comments and thoughts by the band members, or this merely a fan giving his opinion on all of the songs (like we do on this forum all the time)?

DTF: The Novel.
-
Why is there a picture of just one band member on the cover? And 4 out of 14 album covers? I don't want to rag on a book that just gets announced, but that cover is very underwhelming.

Jordan Blum = John Petrucci

Just got a response from Jordan that he does talk about all the non-album tracks too, although he couldn't remember if he included DLPM or not, and mentioned the Majesty demos, but it doesn't seem that he gave them the same write up as the others. Sadly, it seems we will be left wondering what the real backstory is to "Mike Thinks He's Dee Dee Ramone Introducing A Song Song" :'(

Hard pass then.

DTF: The Novel.
We need to release our own DTF book for this.
-
And a special deluxe edition with a CD that contains a game that simulates the DT League.

And with a photo that's 15+ years old....

I think you're being kind.
Book/cover etc, but hmm.

Thanks for spreading the word, dude! Oh, and hi everyone! Thanks for your interest in the book (if you are, in fact, interested haha). It will also be available on Amazon and in Barnes and Noble stores (once we're allowed to go into them, that is). I also published one of these on Jethro Tull last year ;)

Not sure, but hey!

It features insights from the band, as well as some genre peers. Also, I'm an established journalist within the field (in addition to being a fan).

That's how all Sonicbond On Track books look. It's part of a series.

Was curious about that. Thank you for responding, and joining us!

Hi, Jordan, thanks for the insight on the book and welcome to the board. :tup
-
Hey Jordan, welcome to DTF. We met briefly at ProgStock during a DTF dinner that friday night. I didn't stick around for the weekend but saw you on facebook afterwards. Anyway, had no idea you were working on a DT book, that's pretty cool! :metal

Yup, but I'm not very big with the facebook anymore these days.
-
Awesome! I'm looking forward to picking this up.
-
Welcome to DTF Jordan, looking forward to reading the book!

Thanks, all! I may not be checking this thread as often as I should, so feel free to reach out to me on Facebook or Twitter (as long as you keep it positive ):

Interesting.

Not sure if anyone else here ordered this, but I just received mine over the weekend, and although I haven't started reading it yet, it looks pretty cool.

Ditto.
-
I ordered mine too, but it will take more time to arrive here in Brazil. Out of curiosity, even The Astonishing is commented song by song? :o
-
I'm expecting at least a one-page analysis on The Hovering Sojourn. :P
-
I ordered mine the other day, can't wait. I love these kind of books.

Yeah, I think so.

Yes, although the individual song write-ups tend to be shorter than those for other albums.
-
Setlist Scotty and I will have to compile a companion book for any songs not included in this compendium. I'm sure we could squeeze out at least one chapter on Barfbag and Moonbubbles.

Really cool to know, thanks!👍

...not to mention the chapter dedicated to "Mike Thinks He's Dee Dee Ramone Introducing a Song Song". :yarr

Oh yes, I'm looking forward to reading a deep analysis of the one truly great poetic work of our time, the Canadian Rap.

Same! I wanna know what the Biggest Fucking Thing was in the end :lol

How much text/info is dedicated to each song? Are there any technical specifics, like recording date etc?
-
Is this already out? Amazon says it’s being released on Aug 28. Also, any digital versions available?

Maybe that's a US release date?
I ordered through Burning Shed, which is a British company. Got mine already and read it.
While I certainly disagree with some of Jordan's critical assessments, he is clearly a passionate music fan, and understands what he is writing about.

Being someone like me that has followed the band extensively for many years, do you feel it was worth the purchase? Was there much new information?

There were several points where I said "I didn't know that". I certainly knew a lot of it already, being a fairly hardcore fan since 1992, but if nothing else, it's an item for the collection, and it's reasonably priced.

May eventually end up getting this myself.

Just ordered, all up to Australia $45! Can't wait. Thanks for posting the info on the book.
-
I've been reading this during the last couple of days. It's a really nice one. I'm up to Octavarium now.
-
Bought mine direct from Jordan, clearly the best copy around.

Reviewed this recently! (https://www.musicalypse.net/2020-jordan-blum-dream-theater-every-album-every-song/)
TL;DR: An entertaining read despite some factual errors, but maybe the non-diehards who haven't read Lifting Shadows or heard all the albums yet are the ones most likely to get the most out of it.

That's a great review! Thanks for posting!
