Vote and discuss.

In my opinion, there are none to speak of. (that weren't active before then)

Wait, are talking subjectively or objectively here?

I don't know if I can say any of them is a big musical genius, but out of the bunch, I like Ed Sheeran the most. His first three albums had a fair amount of songs I liked.
PSY, he came in, had a gigantic hit, the follow-up didn't do as big, and where is he now?
-
I have never heard of PSY. I've heard the name Ed Sheeran but couldn't tell you a thing about him. Same with Beiber.

Voted PSY obviously, what a musician
-
Subjectively, I'd say Kevin Moore.
But objectively, PSY is the clear genius on that list. PSY, he came in, had a gigantic hit, the follow-up didn't do as big, and where is he now?
South Korea, I'd assume.

I’m gonna bite and just say that we’ve had FAR worse pop artists than Ed Sheeran. He’s actually one of the good ones. There’s a few songs my gf and I used to listen to. He’s got a wholesome vibe and really writes some emotional pop songs. Not my genre at all, but from what I’ve heard by him, I definitely respect him compared to all the other garbage that’s out there in the pop world.

Kurt Cobain

He did Stairway to Heaven, I think.

I voted Ed Sheeran out of the available options :)
-
Jack Black and Kyle Gass! :metal
-
If you’re going to include those people, Adele should really be there as well.
I wouldn’t really vote for any of them though. I’m not sure there is one off the top of my head, maybe Eminem or Jay Z? Alicia Keys? Beyoncé? Not sure anyone could be classed as a genius. Steven Wilson has been a pretty amazing artist but I wouldn’t class him as a genius.

It shows how much I’m turning into my parents that I’m not really sure who that is. I think it might be Kanye West but, if so, I literally couldn’t name a single song he’s done. That’s in no way a slight on him, I’m just very out of touch with chart music these days.

He is a worthy contender.

Steven Wilson is the obvious choice. And interestingly, he'd probably throw a nod in Kanye's direction. When I saw him a few years ago he actually commented that Kanye was really the only person out there actually pushing boundaries.

He is a worthy contender.

Kanye vs. Freddie Kanye vs. Freddie
What Freddie? In the 21st century?
-
I don’t think Kanye is a genius, but he’s much better/more talented than some of you guys who haven’t heard a single note of his music think.
-

I definitely heard more than one note of his music and it wasn't something I'll ever remember fondly.
-
Whenever i'm in doubt, Kevin Moore!

That’s the beauty of music. One can despise a song while someone else can love it. Neither’s opinion is worth more than the other’s.

Absolutely!

I had NO idea who it was until I did a Google image search.

Came here to literally mention him as a joke. Then I saw the candidates and am even more disappointed that he isn't on the list.
Kanye 2020!
-
Barto gave the best serious answer in a non-serious thread. ;)
Those of you mentioning Kayne, I needed a good laugh. Thank you for that.

The Nicky Spanjaards option is missing, therefore this poll is invalid.

I must admit Kanye can barely sing. Singing is not his strength.
He is not even a very good rapper.

These polls used to have an Earth Wind and Fire option at MP's site.

I'm going with The Lady Gaga, if we're being serious.

either her or Dirty Loops yes

I can't speak for Kayne's musical abilities, but I have no qualms about calling him one of the biggest geniuses of marketing and self-promotion int eh 21st century.
-
He's also pretty good at inflating his wife's ass.

repost regarding Kanye (my bad)

The combined talents of the people listed might add up to the talent in McCartney’s right pinky finger.
-
People dissing on Ed Sheeran without actually knowing what he does is pretty strange.

That may be true (McCartney was my first thought before I realized we were limiting this to the 21st century) but that's sort of like comparing every hockey player to Gretzky, or every basketball player to Jordan. Doesn't mean the rest aren't good, just that they're not, well, McCartney.
By the way, even limiting to the 21st Century, Bruce Springsteen ain't a bad guess. He's done more in the twilight of his career than most have done at the peak of their career.

I'm amazed how many DTF'ers are missing the joke here.

Not missing the joke, really, just musing, because the inanity that led to the joke notwithstanding, it's an interesting question.
Plus, I've got nothing funny to add! :)

Oh, I'm definitely getting the joke, especially after my participation in the glorious Knocking on Heaven's Door thread, but some of the responses irk me. I don't know enough about Justin Bieber or PSY (or even Bono for that matter), so I won't comment on that, but people claiming Ed Sheeran is 'talentless' is ridiculous.

I know what he does. He makes bland commercial music.
-

No offense to Kanye, but Steven Wilson really needs to listen to more contemporary music :rollin

I know what he does. He makes bland commercial music.
And he writes and performs his own stuff and is hugely successful at doing that.

But the music he writes is objectively bad. Derp.

Have you seen him?
He stood on a stadium stage, by himself with only a guitar, and filled it, in real time, with his loops (using the guitar as a rhythmic device in addition to a melodic instrument) and his vocals, and held them - including my wife and two daughters, captivated. His music is not my cup of tea, but to dismiss him is absolutely ridiculous, and shows me - yes, I'm going to say it - that you are delusional on the level of your own "musical acumen". You don't know half of what you think you do if you dismiss him in that way. So much for your "I can acknowledge music I don't like" nonsense you've been spewing.

There are some singers/bands I don't like, but appreciate their music so I would never say they suck, but Sheeran is not that example. I genuinely believe his music sucks and doesn't deserve appreciation.

Not that it had a ton to begin with, but that right there destroys your position for me. You're just rationalizing your own personal taste under the false guise of "objectivity".
