Title: Your Favorite Albums of 2020
Post by: The Walrus on May 14, 2020, 01:19:03 PM
I've been wanting to make this thread for a while. I've already consumed way more new music this year than any other year (124 new records as of this post), and going down the list, well, I've heard a lot of great stuff, a lot of okay stuff, and a ton of 'meh' stuff that I won't come back to. But it's all worth it for the gems I've found, whether they were already on my radar or obscure surprises I've never seen anyone else talk about.

No actual order so far, other than #1 which is very likely to remain my album of the year. They're listed in chronological order of release since I edited them from my master list.

1. Eminem - Music To Be Murdered By (rap)
2. Unreqvited - Mosaic II: La Déteste Et La Détresse (atmospheric black metal)
3. Louise - Heavy Love (pop)
4. Jørn - Heavy Rock Radio II: Executing the Classics (hard rock)
5. Dustbowl Revival - Is It You, Is It Me (Americana/pop/rock/blues/country)
6. Lovebites - Electric Pentagram (power metal)
7. Richie Kotzen - 50 For 50 (blues/rock/fusion)
8. Tame Impala - The Slow Rush (psychedelic/indie rock)
9. Grimes - Miss Anthropocene (pop)
10. H.E.A.T - H.E.A.T II (AOR/hard rock)
11. The Night Flight Orchestra - Aeromantic (AOR)
12. Burden of Life - The Makeshift Conqueror (melodic death metal)
13. Christian Muenzner - Path of the Hero (instrumental/neoclassical power metal)
14. Magic Sword - Endless (synthwave)
15. Conception - State of Deception (progressive metal)
16. Testament - Titans of Creation (thrash metal)
17. Dynazty - The Dark Delight (power metal)
18. Nightwish - Human. :II: Nature. (symphonic metal)
19. Joe Satriani - Shapeshifting (instrumental rock)
20. The Strokes - The New Abnormal (alt rock)

i've only given two 2020 albums a significant amount of spins thus far because my 2019 backlog was waaayy bigger than it should've been  :lol

but i guess, so far? :V

1. Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone
2. Intronaut - Fluid Existential Inversions

SLS will probably make my top 10 by the end of the year, at least. very good stuff.

I've hardly listened to anything new this year so far for some reason. I'll be following this thread to find some stuff to listen to!

Uhh... I've checked some stuff from this year but not much has stuck so far, or maybe I'm forgetting something, this year is somewhat of a blur. Either way, here's the top 5 I keep coming back to:

1. Marjana Semkina - Sleepwalking
2. Katatonia - City Burials
3. Nightwish - Human Nature
4. Novena - The Eleventh Hour
5. Conception - State of Deception

Too many good ones to list, as always. I just wanna promote the new Vulkan album, Technatura. Never heard of them before but they take Karnivool and modern Opeth ideas and turn it into something pretty unique. Swedish/English lyrics, great riffs, and cool use of unconventional instruments here and there

Eupnea by Pure Reason Revolution is my AOTY currently, but there hasn't been a ton of competition so far. Only other 2020 releases I've purchased have been the new Kvelertak, Thy Catafalque, Poppy, and Ihsahn (which is just an EP so I wouldn't count it anyways), all of which range from decent to good.

Eupnea is definitely up there for me, didn't make my cut of favorites but we'll see how it ages. Certainly one of the better albums I've heard this year!

I like the last Katatonia record more, but once again the new one is way too angsty for my tastes. The last two songs and one of the early tracks with the active guitar lines are my favorites.

Another NIN fan on this board! There are a few of us!
Great double albums though truth be told I'm having a hard time categorizing it as an NIN album, it's more fitting as a Trent & Atticus collaboration. In fact, the Watchmen soundtrack volumes  sound more NIN. Just IMO of course.

Btw if you like Miss Anthropocene check out Art Angels, it’s a lot more poppy and upbeat but it’s one of my favorite pop albums.

yeah that Metheny record is a breath of fresh air. Very unexpectedly good, mainly due to many of his albums in recent years have not been as memorable or unique. The strings and cinematic element really make a difference for me.

just looking at the 2020 Release Calendar, my biggest anticipation right now, that is confirmed, is the probably the upcoming new Everything Everything album.

And then some others that are not confirmed, but likely, like Pain of Salvation and Fates Warning. Unfortunately some of the albums that looked like they would come out, may not given the impact of the Pandemic, or other factors.

Much like last year, I seem to be spending most of my time discovering old artists and buying up their catalogs. Doing that right now with Biffy Clyro, for instance.

Anyways, looks like I have 16 albums from this year. Not much really. Actually, looks like 2 are EP's, 1 is a live album and the other is some new tracks on the re-release of Chris Poland's Metalopolis record. Haven't even listened to them all yet.

As of now, this is how I am looking:

1 - Deathwhite - Grave Image
2 - Testament - Titans of Creation
3 - Katatonia - City Burials

The new Mandy Moore is good but I need some more listens. Need to be in the right mood for that one. Same with the new Vanessa Carlton record, which I have but have not listened to yet.

Still haven't put on the new Satriani or Nightwish albums yet. Listened to some of the new In This Moment. It won't be in the top. Wish they would go back to the sound of the first 3 records. The Ad Infinitum album is really good. Not sure if it is top tier material. Ihsahn's EP was quite good, but I tend to not count EP's in the main list. Finally, I really liked the new Sons of Apollo record. They really stepped it up for me and I still throw it on here and there.

Still a bunch more coming. I have a few on pre-order now.

Let's see;

Sepultura - Quadra
Trivium - What the Dead Men Say
British Lion - The Burning
Black Swan - Shake the World
Allen/Olzen - Worlds Apart
My Dying Bride - The Ghost of Orion

They would be my picks so far.

I’ve only picked up three 2020 releases so far, and two are download only (no CD available).

1. Echorec - The Island
- I started a thread about this one, but it’s my favorite of these three so far. Debut from a very young UK prog act. Sort of a concept album but not in the musical theater sense. Great drummer, very talented singer/guitarist/key player, the bassist is Ok too. It’s not over the top instrumentally, and it’s only moderately heavy, more of a modern rock act but definitely progressive with melodic solos, great drumming, and some engaging longer tracks.

2. Yaatri - Reach (technically an EP)
- This is a cool modern jazz record that is hard to describe, because it doesn’t sound like what I usually listen to or even what I think of as jazz. It’s definitely not in the rock genre, but it could be considered somewhat progressive I guess. Female vocalist and some great instrumentalists. I saw it mentioned somewhere else and after hearing a couple songs I was hooked.

3. Fernando Perdomo - Out to Sea 3
- I’m mildly disappointed in volume 3 of Perdomo’s Out to Sea series. I loved the first two and just about everything else he’s done. Maybe this idea has run its course though. The Storm is a very cool track though (kind of like an acoustic King Crimson track), and there is some fine guitar work throughout of course. It’s not bad at all, just hasn’t hit me the way the first two did.

I need to check out Eric Johnson’s latest. Looking forward to Nick D’Virgilio. Not sure there’s anything else in particular I’m really looking forward to. It’s possible Big Big Train get their next album together by the end of the year I guess since they aren’t touring (and the Summer’s Lease compilation might get released in the fall outside of Japan).

I was just thinking about opening up this thread, since I did this last year too, but now I don't have to. Thanks Katt  :tup

My year has mostly been taken up by my roulette so I haven't got much 2020 listening in, but I do have a few.

1. Spectral Lore/Mare Cognitum - Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine (Atmospheric Black Metal) (this probably won't move from the #1 spot)
2. Invent, Animate - Greyview (Metal-Core/Post-Hardcore)
3. Serpent Column - Endless Detainment (EP) (Blackened Avant-Garde Mathcore)

Hey Puppies, that Unreqvited band I introduced you to has a new album coming out on the 22nd. I just ordered a copy of the CD. https://unreqvited.bandcamp.com/album/empathica

EDIT: Ummm somehow the new Night Flight Orchestra was not on my list? I played the heck out of it but didn't add it to the ranks, wtf. Anyway, that will round out my list at a nice even 20 for now :)

I've listened to quite a few new albums (mostly during work) but it's a little too early to rank them.

The albums I really like so far:
Dool - Summerlands (mildy progressive psychedelic rock)
Bismarck - Oneiromancer (doom/sludge)
Frayle - 1692 (doom/post)
Katatonia - City Burials
Toundra - Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari (instrumental postrock)
Intronaut - Fluid Existential Inversions (progressive)
Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi

Need to listen/relisten:
My Dying Bride - The Ghost of Orion
Paradise Lost - Obsidian
Treurwilg - An End to Rumination
Dark Fortress - Spectres from the Old World
Novena - The Eleventh Hour

Only listened to three so far:

Burden of Life -  The Make Shift Conquerer  purchased - Really like the variety of songs

Elder - Omens  purchased - A lot of folks do not like this one as much as Reflections, but the production and overall sound is great.  This one has synthesizers and has a prog feel.

Paradise Lost - Obsidian  not yet purchased -  Great sounding album

Not listened to a whole bunch of new music this year but Ad Infinitum’s album Chapter I - Monarchy is by far my favourite so far. Really nicely done Symphonic(ish) metal album from a new band with a super talented singer.

Apart from a couple of songs the new Satriani album is not grabbing me unfortunately.

1. Dawn Of Solace-Waves

I checked a couple of songs out a while back when you mentioned it and didn't like it.  I decided to youtube this while I'm sitting at week doing procedure manuals and shit and I'm actually really liking it.  Great atmosphere and mood.  Good melodies.  The vocals take some getting used to, but they fit the depressing, somber mood.  I like it.  Reminds me heavily of another band.  I'm thinking Voyager with the vocals, but I think I'm thinking someone else.

kidding................just checked it out and yeah - it's a rather weird combo of elements.  The quality of his voice sounds more suited to pop than metal but it gives a unique vibe and that's half the battle.    Could be a grower.

Lead Wings is great, but most of the album is pretty slow. I would've loved to have had a couple of more Lead Wings styled tracks on the . Still the album is quite moody and addicting.

Fairyland is really really good well composed symphonic metal. It's one of the holy trinity of amazing symphonic metal bands imo. The first album has Elisa C. Martin from Dark Moor on lead vocals. Great stuff with a unique flavor nobody else really has

Maybe I'll do a discography thread on them

Any discography thread I want to make would probably just end up being me talking to myself anyway so I'm on the fence

Some dude I  used to know who went off the rails and got into black metal.

I think Tim might be going through some stuff. He's listening to some depressing stuff. I'll see if he needs to talk

Might have to add the new WOLFCLUB and Firewind to my favorites list, but it's a bit too early to tell. Also the new Lights & Motion.

Would anybody be interested if I posted the entire list of all the full albums I've heard this year? I'm on #131 right now. Most are albums I'll never return to again, but it's worth it for the gems (for my taste) that I've found that I otherwise would never have heard.

2 new additions to my favorites of 2020.

Master Boot Record - Floppy Disk Overdrive (MBR had one of my very favorite records of 2019, Internet Protocol, and this is just as good if not better, holy crap)
Fairyland - Osyrhianta (will listen at midnight, already know it'll be in my favorites, BRING IT ON!)

Hey I finally got around to listening to something else from 2020. It was only an EP, but hey, it was awesome! Kat check it out, I know you liked the last Kardashev EP.  :metal

Top Albums
1. Spectral Lore/Mare Cognitum - Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine (Atmospheric Black Metal) (this probably won't move from the #1 spot)
2. Invent, Animate - Greyview (Metal-Core/Post-Hardcore)
3. Serpent Column - Endless Detainment (EP) (Blackened Avant-Garde Mathcore)

Top EP's
1. Kardashev - The Baring of Shadows

^^ Enjoying that Kardashev EP, thanks for the heads-up, Pup. You should check out that Sylvaine/Unreqvited split EP, "Time Without End." It has the song Meadows of Elysium on it, the one I sent at the start of your last roulette that you loved - it dropped in January and is also only 4 tracks, 2 from each artist.

Personally, I've only picked up four new releases this year so far, the bulk of what i'm looking forward to is coming out next month and through the summer/fall. The first two were live releases from The Neal Morse Band and Ayreon, both of which are quite enjoyable, but there isn't any NEW music there, but as far as live releases go, they're both pretty top notch, though I would take the Ayreon set over the the NMB one, as the stage production of Into The Electric Castle is one of the best live concert shows I've ever watched!

Of the other two albums I've gotten so far, only Prehensile Tales by Pattern-Seeking Animals is a new studio album, and I've been enjoying it a LOT over the last week. Some of the best fresh prog I've heard in awhile from these guys, and a step up from their debut. Definitely worth checking out for any SB and Ted Leonard fans.

The other album is the Big Big Train compilation, Summer's Lease, and while it's just a compilation (with some re-recordings of older material, and only one new song), it's still probably my favorite release of the four I've gotten so far, which is funny to think because it is only just a compilation. However, despite that, it feels like so much more than a compilation. The whole package, released in Japan only so far, is just as lush and gorgeous as any regular BBT studio album. It may be my favorite compilation released by any band EVER. It's that good.

It’s possible Big Big Train get their next album together by the end of the year I guess since they aren’t touring (and the Summer’s Lease compilation might get released in the fall outside of Japan).

And speaking BBT, recently, Greg Spawton has said on Facebook that the band are currently in the midst of writing their next album and plan to get together to record it this fall for a Summer 2021 release, so we won't see any new BBT music THIS year, but definitely next year, when they plan to hit the road and visit all the dates they were planning to in 2020, and then some. More tidbits from recent BBT posts are known, but I'll post them in the BBT thread.

Bump.

Continuing my experiment of listening to as much new music as I can, even with my roulette this past summer, I'm on record #211 of 2020. I just cut out everything I didn't like or will never replay again, down to all the albums I genuinely enjoy and will continue to revisit or still want to play a lot. There's a spectrum here from records I just 'like' to albums I can't get enough of, but they're all quality enough to be worth one's time imo. Even left out a few I still consider good but probably couldn't recommend to others. Really having fun with this. Will come back to this to post the 18 albums that I've purchased this year, and the couple dozen I've got squirelled on Spotify.  I'm actually pretty light this year on sampling - only at 88 albums so far.  Then again, there's still Glenn H's (PPUSA) Top 50 list to come out.  I usually find some of my most favorite albums from there - last year it was M.I.GOD.; previously it was Daydream XI.

I'm honestly fatigued at sampling too much - I don't go back and spend enough time with albums of the past that I adore.

My new album list is usually small, and this year’s is actually a little bigger than usual, mostly due to everyone in BBT putting out an album LOL:

1. Fernando Perdomo - Out to Sea 3
2. Yaatri - Reach (technically an EP)
3. Echorec - The Island
4. Nick D’Virgilio - Invisible
5. McStine & Minnemann
6. Dyble Longdon - Between a Breath and a Breath
7. Gungfly - Alone Together
8. Big Big Train - Summer’s Lease

Will probably be picking up another 2-3 before year’s end. That’s a pretty banner year for new releases for me. Have picked up a ton of new to me/older albums this year though. Part of why I don’t always get to the new releases is I’m always digging up something old that’s new to me.

Fridays are the one day where I actually get home at a decent time, and I love my Friday afternoon sample sessions. But it's been a few months since I have done it. The UFO thread has taken a lot of time. Once it's over, I have some serious catching up to do.

My album purchasing has dropped a bit due to financial restraints and perhaps also the ongoing goings-on. 13 albums total, of which 6 are 2020 releases. My current ranking of the 2020 releases I own is:

1. Celexa Dreams - Kyros
2. Virus - Haken
3. Alone Together - Rikard Sjöblom's Gungfly
4. Prehensile Tales - Pattern-Seeking Animals
5. Feelings Are Good - Lonely Robot
6. Love Over Fear- Pendragon

I definitely intend to pick up the new Flower Kings when it comes out, although I have no idea how the new lockdown measures will affect my ability to get it shortly after release. The Tangent released an album, but tbh it's not massively high-priority for me atm. What I've heard of it hasn't grabbed me as much as previous material of theirs has.

WOW, is my list short.

Sons Of Apollo - MMXX
Grateful Dead - Dave's Picks 33
Noel Gallagher - Blue Moon Rising EP
Taylor Swift - folklore
Grateful Dead - Dave's Picks 34
Grateful Dead - Dave's Picks 35
Deep Purple - Whoosh!

Of those, Deep Purple is by far the best, with Taylor second.   The Dead releases are solid, but I don't view them as "new releases" of a given year.  They are archival.   The Noel and SoA albums are good, but did nothing for me long term.

Purchased
Thy Catafalque - Naiv (avant-garde metal, folk, electronic)
Poppy - I Disagree (alternative metal, industrial, pop)
Kvelertak - Splid (heavy metal, black metal)
Ihsahn - Telemark (EP) (blackened progressive metal)
Ihsahn - Pharos (EP) (symphonic progressive metal)
Pure Reason Revolution - Eupnea (progressive rock)
Ulver - Flowers Of Evil (synthpop, electronic, new wave)
Code Orange - Underneath (industrial metalcore, alternative metal)
The Ocean - Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic (progressive metal)
Sordid Pink - Sordid Pink (pop, progressive metal)

Listened to, haven't purchased (yet)
Katatonia - City Burials (doom metal, progressive metal)
Elder - Omens (progressive rock, stoner rock)
Haken - Virus (progressive metal)
Deftones - Ohms (alternative metal)
Pain Of Salvation - Panther (progressive rock/metal)
...and probably some others I'm forgetting or aren't worth mentioning

Pure Reason Revolution's Eupnea is still my album of the year - nothing else here quite bridges the gap from "good" to "great" I don't think. Though I do think the Ihsahn EPs are excellent, minus the covers.

Years ago I used to buy that many albums but I had to tone it down. I actually had an addiction. Now I have hundreds, maybe thousands of albums that I never listen to.

Yeah I've only bought a very small handful of these. It's nothing I've ever done before, literally listening to multiple new records and artists every day, but it's so fun to experience the wide world of music like that and still regularly read about musicians, famous or obscure, you know nothing of. Still, coming out with a list that big of albums I think are quality 2020 records... it IS a lot, and every day I lament that there just isn't enough time in a day to give the attention I want to each album. Every single year that gets harder and harder to deal with. I don't think I'll be able to do this next year. Got roulette submissions to catch up on anyway

Wow, five months later and my list of listened-to/purchased/received albums has grown from 4 to 23, with at least 8 more releases on the way over the next 2.5 months, though a majority of those are either compilations or live releases (with only 3 major studio albums left I'm looking forward to - The Flower Kings' Islands, Blackfield's For The Music, and McStine Minnemann II).

Even nearly half a year later, Big Big Train's compilation still ranks very highly for me as far as 2020 releases go, but not counting compilations and live albums, I'd say these are my five favorites so far, in no particular ranking:
-Pattern-Seeking Animals, Prehensile Tales
-Haken, Virus
-The Tangent, Auto Reconnaissance
-John Petrucci, Terminal Velocity
-Ayreon, Transitus

I'm sure this will change once the new Flower Kings comes out, as I am sure that'll get into my top five of 2020.

Notable and honorable mentions include Kansas - The Absence Of Presence, Pain Of Salvation - Panther, Rikard Sjoblom's Gungfly - Alone Together, Nick D'Virgilio - Invisible, and McStine Minnemann's debut.

It's also been a big year for live albums, at least for me, starting off with The Neal Morse Band's Great Adventour, Ayreon's Electric Castle Live, Flying Colors' Third Stage, and soon to be released live albums from Dream Theater and Big Big Train.

I haven't bought this much new music in a single calendar year in YEARS - over 30 new albums, including studio, live, compilation/box set, and single/EP releases. On top of all that, I also bought the entire 13-album discography of King Crimson's 40th Anniversary series earlier this summer, so I've spent quite a bit on music this year. My wallet needs a rest! :lol

Wow.. Since I've been working from home a lot, I haven't really listened to a lot of new stuff. The car is where I listen to music the most; I rarely play music at home and if/when I do, it's usually a vinyl LP, so that's not exactly the best way to listen to new music.

I have heard some stuff though, here's it ranked roughly:

1. The Ocean - Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic
1. Pain of Salvation - Panther

3. Obsidian Kingdom - Meat Machine
4. Haken - Virus
5. Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant
6. Ulver - Flowers of Evil

I have a list containing a bunch of stuff I want to check out, but I simply haven't gotten round to it. I've actually been listening to a lot of stuff from previous years and a bunch of jazz records from the 50s and 60s, more so than checking out new releases.

Just worked out my tentative list, seems fairly accurate. There are a load of albums I've only listened to once, that I didn't bother to add, as they obviously didn't leave much of an impression. Here we go...

1. NOFX/Frank Turner Split - West Coast vs. Wessex
2. Get Dead - Dancing with the Curse
3. Mother's Cake - Cyberfunk!
4. Ihsahn - Telemark/Pharos
5. Haken - Virus
6. The Ocean - Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic
7. Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant
8. The Skints - Live at the Electric Ballroom
9. Enslaved - Utgard
10. Pain of Salvation - Panther

11. The Reticent - The Oubliette
12. Obsidian Kingdom - Meat Machine
13. Thy Catafalque - Naiv
14. Svalbard - When I Die, Will I Get Better?
15. Metallica - S&M 2
16. Kvelertak - Splid
17. Nobuo Uematsu - Square Enix Jazz: Final Fantasy VII
18. Intronaut - Fluid Existential Inversions
19. Mastodon - Medium Rarities
20. Trivium - What the Dead Men Say

21. Rannoch - Reflections Upon Darkness
22. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Chunky Shrapnel
23. Frost* - Others EP
24. Elder - Omens
25. Biffy Clyro - A Celebration of Endings
26. Oceans of Slumber - Oceans of Slumber
27. Lamb of God - Lamb of God
28. Telepathy - Burn Embrace
29. Crippled Black Phoenix - Ellengæst
30. Days N Daze - Show Me the Blueprints
31. The Hirsch Effekt - Kollaps
32. The Suicide Machines - Revolution Spring
33. Me and That Man - New Man, New Songs, Same Shit, Vol. 1
34. Steve Von Till - No Wilderness Deep Enough
35. Paradise Lost - Obsidian
36. Protest the Hero - Palimpsest
37. Black Crown Initiate - Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape
38. The Fall of Troy - Mukiltearth

With the understanding that I am not making fun of or slagging anyone's choice in music - just making an observation about ME and my listening habits - but I read this thread and I wonder if I haven't hit that age where my musical library is now fairly static.   I guess I did add Ayreon to the list recently, and I've been deepening my appreciation for Neal Morse, but - and again, NO JUDGMENT - I see these lists and I have no desire to NOT listen to Rush or Deep Purple or Michael Schenker in order to dig full on into those catalogues.  It's almost like there's too much music out there.

That's an interesting - and, for a guy that used to listen to anything once, and would go see any band live at any time - sobering thought.

I often wobble toward this line of thinking, and even as someone who enjoys hearing all this new music, there are still moments during most days where I just have to listen to something familiar and (to me) classic. Then there are times when I'm listening to new music that hits me almost the same way those personal classics of mine hit me many years ago, and the thirst for more great new discoveries grows. I've begun partitioning the days of the week into 'familiar music' and 'new discoveries.' There is too much music and not enough time for it.

That makes sense; maybe I'll try something like that.

And after I posted that, I kind of thought that I wasn't being fair.  I AM expanding my horizons; I'm a full-on Harry Styles fan now, and that's relatively new, and Rival Sons is a band I've picked up recently that I really like.

I do still think, though, that there's almost TOO MUCH music out there. It's not possible to give it a fair shake.  When I got High Voltage and Blizzard of Ozz for Christmas one year, I remember listening to them, putting them to tape, and playing them OVER AND OVER.   As I've said before, I can list you the albums and the songs IN ORDER to this day - I Don't Know, Crazy Train, Goodbye To Romance, Dee, Suicide Solution, Mr. Crowley, No Bone Movies, Revelations (Mother Earth), Steal Away (The Night), It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock And Roll), Rock And Roll Singer, The Jack, Live Wire, T.N.T., Can I Sit Next To You Girl, Little Lover, She's Got Balls, High Voltage - without thinking about it.  I could do that for Kiss from the debut through Dynasty, maybe Unmasked, and including three of the four solo albums.  Maiden, Sabbath too.  Now?  I'd be hard pressed to name all the songs - in ANY order - from the three Flying Colors records, and I LIKE them.

Maybe you haven't found that 'holy shit' record that's blown you away. There are a bunch of brand new releases I can rattle off tracklists from start to finish 'cause I love them so much and have played them. But, I also have more free time on my hand than you, and other than music, my brain is filled with malted barley, hops and bong resin  :lol

You're right about being "blown away".   I have been blown away by records, but it's almost always after the fact (The Grand Experiment is the latest one, and that came out five years ago).  The last record I was blown away by on release was Flying Colors debut, and the last Van Halen record before that.  Everything else has been a slow burn or a no burn.

I haven't been doing a lot of listening this year because I've been knee deep in recording the next The ANABASIS album, which officially begins vocal recording next week!

That said, there are a few albums so far that year that I've quite enjoyed.  I'll circle back to this thread later when I've compiled my list.  Off the top of my head a couple of records stand out this year - in no particular order:

Kansas - The Absence of Presence
Thoughts Factory - Elements
The Tangent - Auto Reconnaissance
The Flower Kings - Islands
Green Carnation - Leaves of Yesteryear
Pain of Salvation - Panther
John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity
Vanishing Point - Dead Elysium
Paralydium - Worlds Beyond
Nick D'Virgilio - Invisible

I sample a lot of music, which is partly a blessing and partly a curse of unlimited streaming. I usually don’t have to invest too much time to know if a new band or album I hear about is something I’ll like. But of course I’m not giving full attention listens to a lot of it. But my new music purchases are usually reserved for bands I know and are committed to, otherwise I’m not going to buy something without sampling it first.

In terms of actually listening to all the music that’s out there, a lot depends where I am. At home I’m usually listening to music that I own played off my laptop, and that could be a full album but a lot of times I just shuffle my playlist and see what pops up. When I’m driving is usually when I give albums a full listen (on CD), so that’s where I usually get acquainted with new purchases. When I’m out walking the dog I usually will jump around on Prime Music and listen to new stuff I’ve heard about or something that’s being discussed here. That’s usually my discovery time.

Something fun I did the other night, Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness have a podcast where they pick a year and talk about the albums from that year, and boy do they talk about a LOT of albums. I listened to their episode on 1989 the other night and would pause it and look up an album on Prime and see what I thought. Discovered some interesting stuff that way.

Problem for me is that "medium" does have a bearing.  I've listened to music in my car and on my home stereo and it's not been the same listening through two shitty computer speakers that sat in my garage for three years.  :) :)

I suppose I could figure out a way to get Spotify in my car, but that seems like work.  :)

If your car stereo has bluetooth, that's all you need. I still buy CDs but honestly they just go straight to the shelf for me, as it's more of a collector thing now and I don't want to scratch up the discs or cases in my car.

The medium thing is interesting, though. I am 99% digital/streaming these days, but like I said, I still buy physical, and buy vinyls of albums that were originally recorded on vinyl (so pretty much anything from the early 80s on back). Sometimes I like to just sit in front of the record player and play the album, because for all the convenience of digital, that warmth of listening to a vinyl record is unmatched by anything else imo.

Yeah, once cars started coming equipped with bluetooth that was when I took the plunge with Amazon.com music unlimited and it's pissah!  I get to sample everything I want to sample before I make a purchase.  It's practically saved me from regretting any purchases I make.  I usually have at least one full listen of something or maybe a few tracks to get to know it before I buy it.

There are still several bands I just go right to buying like Ayreon, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, The Tangent, Transatlantic, Neal Morse Band (and solo) to name the most prominent ones.  Oh, wait, Symphony X is still an automatic purchase too and Star One of course, oh and Fates Warning too.  OK, I should stop now  :lol

Yeah I'm the same way. I got a bunch of old 'standards' so to speak that get an automatic buy from me, and that money is already stretched thin trying to choose which favorite artists to support, so I feel bad for all the new artists I'm just streaming and not buying physical copies of. But that's life  :lol

What crazy lists there are over here. I don't think I've listened to even 5 new albums released this year. I need to check out the Pain of Salvation album, so many people have it on their album of the year lists.

I've heard and bought I think Haken, Nine Inch Nails and John Petrucci this year. I don't think I've bought or heard anything else.

If you like the John Petrucci record, I highly recommend checking out the albums from Christian Münzner (Path of the Hero), Andy James (C.S.I.L), and Kiko Loureiro (Open Source). Similar guitar shred stuff but honestly I think those three are even better than JP's.

EDIT: I took a look at my listening history and uh wowee I've already smashed last year's (scrobbled, anyway) listening count out of the water

Rannoch - Reflections Upon Darkness
Bagdadski Vor - Колхида
Golden Ashes - In the Lugubrious Silence of Eternal Night
Olhava - Ladoga

Taylor Swift - Folklore

i have plenty more albums i've heard and bought just not fully sure on how i feel about them all
i feel like it's worth appending: albums i've bought but haven't dug into/become too familiar with yet that i could see likely making this list just based on early listens

Pain of Salvation - Panther
Sufjan Stevens - The Ascension
The Reticent - The Oubliette
Etoile Filante - Magnum opus caelestis

So the last couple days I've been thinking about my top albums for the year. First of all, I think October was an incredibly strong month for non-metal. Second, this year has been suck ass for metal imo. Or, more likely, I'm just losing interest in most of it. I foresee very few metal records actually being in my top [whatever] list for 2020. But I probably won't know for sure until sometime in January after listening to all, or at least most, of December's releases. Speaking of which, I hate albums that drop in December, especially the back half. I don't like how little time there is for those albums to digest, but I don't want to count them in the next year's count either  :lol

Whittled it down to a top 25 which was really hard. I underestimated the amount of good metal albums this year for my taste. I think this is pretty accurate to what a top 25 in January might look like, but I did this pretty quickly, so as of right now...

1. Eminem - Music To Be Murdered By [rap]
2. Unreqvited - Mosaic II (La Déteste Et La Détresse) [atmospheric black metal]
3. Christian Münzner - Path of the Hero [instrumental shred]
4. Nightwish - Human. :||: Nature. [symphonic metal]
5. Testament - Titans of Creation [thrash metal]
6. Master Boot Record - Floppy Disk Overdrive [electronic industrial metal]
7. Fairyland - Osyrhianta [symphonic metal]
8. Unreqvited - Empathica [atmospheric black metal]
9. Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant [progressive metal]
10. Lady Gaga - Chromatica [pop]
11. The Weeknd - After Hours [R&B]
12. Tycho - Simulcast [electronic]
13. Ages - Uncrown [melodic black metal]
14. Unleash the Archers - Abyss [power metal]
15. Taylor Swift - Folklore [acoustic/pop]
16. Falconer - From A Dying Ember [folk metal]
17. Skeletoon - Nemesis [power metal]
18. Emyn Muil - Afar Angathfark [atmospheric black metal]
19. Adamantis - Far Flung Realm [power metal]
20. Bruce Springsteen - Letter To You [rock]
21. Kylie Minogue - DISCO [pop/disco]
22. ACDC - Power Up [hard rock]
23. Chris Stapleton - Starting Over [country/rock/blues]
24. Lunatic Soul - Through Shaded Woods [avant-garde/progressive]
25. Paloma Faith - Infinite Things [pop] <--- fighting for album of the year, where Eminem was holding it since the start of January, do not sleep on this if you like pop music please I'm begging you

genres? I honestly hate classifying stuff with tags.

A lot of it is progressive rock and/or progressive metal of a kind. Or "progressive college rock" as I have called it. Some of it is Pop, Power Pop, Electronic or Dance Music, some of it is folk, Jazz, instrumental, or "Post Rock" at points.

I dunno, maybe look it up on rateyourmusic or wikipedia if you can't find more detail on the forum here?

I mean I was just asking for broad labels so I don't go digging up a prog metal artist when I'm not looking for it, and without spending a lot of time combing through each one to find what genres they sound like, that's all, not asking for super anal labels like blackened melodic prog death. But yeah, I'll do that I guess :/

Palimpsest is the first PTH album I've willingly listened to and I liked it a lot. I went in expecting to hate it because of the type of music it is.
It's a fairly standard Protest the Hero album. It's a good album, just like all of their albums.

Whittled it down to a top 25 which was really hard. I underestimated the amount of good metal albums this year for my taste. I think this is pretty accurate to what a top 25 in January might look like, but I did this pretty quickly, so as of right now...

1. Eminem - Music To Be Murdered By [rap]
2. Unreqvited - Mosaic II (La Déteste Et La Détresse) [atmospheric black metal]
3. Christian Münzner - Path of the Hero [instrumental shred]
4. Nightwish - Human. :||: Nature. [symphonic metal]
5. Testament - Titans of Creation [thrash metal]
6. Master Boot Record - Floppy Disk Overdrive [electronic industrial metal]
7. Fairyland - Osyrhianta [symphonic metal]
8. Unreqvited - Empathica [atmospheric black metal]
9. Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant [progressive metal]
10. Lady Gaga - Chromatica [pop]
11. The Weeknd - After Hours [R&B]
12. Tycho - Simulcast [electronic]
13. Ages - Uncrown [melodic black metal]
14. Unleash the Archers - Abyss [power metal]
15. Taylor Swift - Folklore [acoustic/pop]
16. Falconer - From A Dying Ember [folk metal]
17. Skeletoon - Nemesis [power metal]
18. Emyn Muil - Afar Angathfark [atmospheric black metal]
19. Adamantis - Far Flung Realm [power metal]
20. Bruce Springsteen - Letter To You [rock]
21. Kylie Minogue - DISCO [pop/disco]
22. ACDC - Power Up [hard rock]
23. Chris Stapleton - Starting Over [country/rock/blues]
24. Lunatic Soul - Through Shaded Woods [avant-garde/progressive]
25. Paloma Faith - Infinite Things [pop] <--- fighting for album of the year, where Eminem was holding it since the start of January, do not sleep on this if you like pop music please I'm begging you

I love seeing lists that are so diverse. Loving music...all genres and styles.

My top 10 hasn't really had much movement, and the only addition is the Honorary Astronaut EP:

1. Get Dead - Dancing with the Curse (Ska-core, Punk Rock)
2. NOFX/Frank Turner Split - West Coast vs. Wessex (Punk Rock, Folk Punk)
3. Mother's Cake - Cyberfunk! (Funk, Prog Rock)
4. Ihsahn - Telemark/Pharos (Progressive Metal)
5. The Ocean - Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic (Progressive Metal)
6. Haken - Virus (Progressive Metal)
7. Honorary Astronaut - Honorary Astronaut (Prog Rock)
8. Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant (Progressive Metal)
9. The Skints - Live at the Electric Ballroom (Reggae, Ska, Punk Rock)
10. Enslaved - Utgard (Progressive Metal)

It's been a very underwhelming year for new releases IMO but I think considering what a year it's been in general it's not that surprising. I think on the flip side 2021 might be a crazy year because it feels like everyone in the music scene has taken this time with no touring to work on new music instead.

Hey thanks emtee. Been a combination of burning out on pretty much all prog and metal music and a burning desire to explore other genres of music. Now my top list still has lots of great metal albums as that's still what I'm most familiar with and always have been, but most of those are bands near and dear to me. Looking forward to seeing what 2021 brings too, hopefully a lot more pop and country, personally speaking.

I'm narrowing down my top 25 of 2020. I've decided to cut off all new albums for the rest of the year - trying to figure out December releases is always a pain in the ass with respect to the calendar year, so I've just decided if anything does come out this month, I'll get to it next month or sometime next year. This has been an awesome year for music imo.

EDIT: Aaaand I think I have the 25 already figured out. Just have to rank them. Spending however long I need to figure this out, whether it's a day or the rest of the month  :lol

Agreed.  A lot of really 'solid' stuff, but not much really captivated me.  I think my tastes are just getting a little more critical.  15+ years of musical accumulation (it was about 2005 that I really started my adulthood journey of exploring and consuming new music/bands) seems to have mostly filled my needs.

I'm only back here to finish what I started. Taylor Swift had to come out and announce a second album the day after I finalized my top 25 for 2020, go figure, so that very likely could end up replacing one of the albums here, but whatever, here is my top 25 for 2020 (left to right, top to bottom), along with one of my favorite songs linked for each record in case anybody gives enough of a shit to check them out. My lists used to be so diverse, but as I get older they seem to be staying mostly heavy. Not sure why, just seems mostly metal, metal and more metal. I did buy some pop records, rock records and other non-metal records this year, but nothing grabbed me. Of my 43 releases dated 2020, 28 are new studio albums. The rest are live albums, EP's and 1 or 2 singles.

1. Deathwhite - Grave Image
This album just kicked my butt from start to finish. As a huge Katatonia fan, these guys actually beat Katatonia on my list.

2. Testament - Titans Of Creation
I have always liked Testament but never saw them as an album of the year contender type band. For me, Steve and Gene are the stars of this record. One of the best mixed pure thrash records I have heard.

3. Killer Be Killed - Reluctant Hero
One of my most anticipated albums for the last few years and it did not disappoint. The 3 lead vocalists thing they do on every track is just so good to me.

4. Mr. Bungle - The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo
I still haven't stopped listening to this. The music is just so brutal and as a huge Dave Lombardo fan, he is just ridiculous on this.

5. Rikard Sjöblom's Gungfly - Alone Together
The only non-metal thing on the list. His last album was my album of the year. This is not as good, but still stellar.

EP's

Soilwork - A Whisp Of The Atlantic
Ihsahn - Telemark and Pharos

Honorable Mention

Sons Of Apollo - MMXX
John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity
Katatonia - City Burials

1: Haken-Virus (It’s not even a question that this is my number one. This album helped me get through this crazy year.)
2: John Petrucci-Terminal Velocity
3: Blue Öyster Cult-The Symbol Remains
4: Sons of Apollo-MMXX
5: Billie Eilish-Various Singles (Okay this is kind of cheating but No Time to Die, Therefore I Am, and My Future especially have been a big part of my year. There’s no way I couldn’t mention them here.)

Last one to come in and take a spot is Rain - Singularity.
It floored me when I got it last week.
It's John Jowitt and Andy Edwards (previously IQ and Frost) together with two others that I had no previous relation to.
Fantastic music, kind of neoprog, with amazing vocal harmonies....

So this is the order I have today..... might change but probably not by much

Fish - Weltschmertz
Mrs Amy Birks  - All That I Am & All That I Was
Rain - Singularity
Doris Brendel and Lee Dunham - Mass Hysteria
Marjana Semkina  - Sleepwalking

Vulkan - Technatura
Scardust - Strangers
Myrkur - Falkesanger
Green Carnation  - Leaves Of Yesteryear
Pain of Salvation  - Panther

The Flower Kings  - Islands
Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant
Ayreon - Transitus
The Pineapple Thief  - Versions of the Truth
Neal Morse  - Sola Gratia

Having spun Illumination yesterday, I will wholeheartedly agree with this.  It is definitely better than Awakenings.

As for my top albums, I think I'm finished with my purchases for 2020 (Royal Hunt is the only pending release I have my eye one, and I'm skeptical it will fall into my 'purchase-worthy' category).  So, here are the albums that have separated money from my wallet (in no particular order - I'm in the process of ranking them this month)

Thoughts Factory - Elements
The Night Flight Orchestra - Aeromatic
Harem Scarem - Change the World
The Unity - Pride
Agonizer - Halo II (EP)
Ad Infinitum - Chapter 1:Monarchy
Nightwish - Human||Nature
Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall - We Are The Night
Exlibris - Shadowrise
Gathering of Kings - Discovery
Primal Fear - Metal Commando
Pyramid Theorem - Beyond the Exosphere
John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity
Vanishing Point - Dead Elysium
Lonely Robot - Feelings are Good
Neal Morse - Sola Gratia
Ayreon - Transitus
DGM - Tragic Separation
Teramaze - I Wonder
Black Fate - Ithaca
Pyramaze - Epitaph
Lords of Black - Alchemy of Souls, Pt1
Intervals - Circadian
Kim Mitchell - The Big Fantasize
Girish and the Chronicles - Rock the Highway
Vanden Plas - The Ghost Xperiment - Illumination
Silent Skies - Satellites

Good lord when I think of it, my year has been grossly annorexic in new music.

The ones that stand out for me are...

Thoughts Factory
Aeternam
Caligula's Horse
Haken

and two outstanding new discoveries...

Nuclear Power Trio- A Clear and Present Rager

I purchased a lot of music this year, but I don't know that I can rank anything.  I liked a lot of the new releases, but I don't know that I have any clear favorites.

I really need to get my 2020 album rankings list in order. I've been slacking this year.

Because of the UFO thread, I have basically taken the 2nd half of the year off from new releases.

This is why I've missed so much, but it was worth it.

I forgot that I wanted to make mention of all of the music I discovered this year from established bands that were 'new' to me. This is more for me than anything else as it helps me take stock of what I found. On top of these 'new' bands, I filled out a ton of discographies of artists I have had for years but was lax on finishing up, Genesis and Devin Townsend being the biggest. I spent a buttload of money on music this year. More than I have in a long time.

So, just for my sake, here are the artists I discovered this year. TAC has a huge hand in a good portion of the list.

UFO
Waysted
Mogg/Way
Michael Schenker's Temple Of Rock
Michael Schenker Fest
Schenker Barden Acoustic Project
Michael Schenker Group
Phantom Elite
The Murder Of My Sweet
Motion Device
Biffy Clyro
Moriah Formica
Eternal Frequency
Coroner
Ex Libris
Lindsay Schoolcraft

I would say the big 3 from the list would be the whole UFO family, Biffy Clyro and Coroner. TAC really drained my bank account with the UFO and Family stuff. I also went huge into Biffy. I constantly dive into their music because it is so diverse and so good. The early stuff is so schizophrenic. Infinity Land is a masterpiece of an album. For Coroner, what grabbed me was a comment calling them the Rush of Thrash. Only 5 albums from them, but they are so good and also diverse from album to album. Never quite the same, much like Rush.

Anyway, just wanted to tack that onto my post. This year has been a blur and I wanted to take stock of the awesomeness of music. I added 2351 songs to my library just this year. Might be a few more before the year is up. Don't tell my wife.

I don't think there has really been any album that blew me away one way or another in the sesne that I'm still listening to it months after the initial release. This seems to happen more and more every year, I don't know what's up. Perhaps my tastes have changed in a way that I can't enjoy the same music repeatedly anymore? I also tend don't listen to a lot of music anyways nowadays, which is also weird, because that used to be different.

Anyway, the 'best' stuff I have heard this year was stuff that was released in previous years, here's five albums I enjoyed that were released in 2020:

1. Pain of Salvation - Panther
2. The Ocean - Phanerozoic II
3. Mr. Bungle - The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo
4. Haken - Virus
5. Obsidian Kingdom - Meat Machine

Kall - Brand
Novena - Eleventh Hour
Olhava - Ladoga

Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone
Spectral Lore & Mare Cognitum - Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine
Svalbard - When I Die, Will I Get Better?
Taylor Swift - Folklore

albums i have that i haven't rated yet that will definitely be here:

The Reticent - The Oubliette
Paysage d'Hiver - Im Wald

albums i am ordering soon that are probably going to kick off a few of these:

Ànteros - ... y en paz la oscuridad
Bron - Pred Dverima Noći
Deluge - Ægo Templo
Obsidian Kingdom - Meat Machine
Seahaven - Halo of Hurt
Ward Davis - Black Cats and Crows
Zeit - Zeit

these are not -all- the albums i am ordering but they are the ones i'm most excited about, so

Two other bands that I had already been aware of but never dove into fully were Sweet Billy Pilgrim and The Clientele.

I got my first kid December last year and since then music listen has not been the same. There's a lot of music, just don't find the energy to find new albums to listen to. So the number of albums I listened to won't even be enough to compile a top 5 list anyway.

1. Pain of Salvation - Panther
I am a huge POS fan and never thought that any release was of subpar quality. However it was a while since something stood out as much as TPE, RL or BE in their discography. Panther will definitely join that group for me. I just think Panther has it all and is extremely well written and produced music. Strong melodies, great flow (yes it's back!) and some damn amazing instrumentation. Daniel's singing is fantastic and Leo really has some extremely sweet drumming going on. When one of you favourite bands releases something this good it's just a damn pleasure :metal

2. Falconer - From a Dying Ember
Maybe not as well known but Falconer has been a big part of music for me through the years. Swedish power metal with medieval tones and amazing singer Mathias Blad. They could never tour because Mathias had work otherwhere and therefore always stayed as a studio band. In the end this is also part of why this is their last album. Every song was written to represent the different styles they adapted over the year and be as strong as possible. I think they really delivered here. And the mixing is their best ever. There's just a lot of great tracks here and a perfect swan song for this band.

---- Now it's quite the distance to the next ones ---

3. Haken - Virus
Letdown 1 for me. Not bad in any way just not that strong as I initially hoped. I expected the album to just become stronger and stronger but instead just dropped and became uninteresting a couple of weeks after release. Messiah Complex is my most memorable moment and still a song I go back to now and then. Sadly not an album I will be coming back to. I did however really like the concept! The way they extended and used an old song as the base for a concept like this was pretty awesome!

4. Ayreon - Transitus
Letdown 2. A bigger one however. I think the idea is good, the execution is even most likely good. This is what Ayreon wanted and successful accomplished to do. However, I don't enjoy it very much. The narrator is greatly voices but destroys the songs. Ayreon has always been very cheesy but this goes over top for me. The songs are also barely songs since they are so short and filled with narration.

--- Honorable mentions ----
Moron Police - A Boat in The Sea
Not released this year but still going strong as if it was. Still as baffled as I was when I discovered this masterpiece (Spotify algorithm actually suggested it) by the same band that wrote T-bag Your Grandma. It shouldn't be this good! But everything about this album is just pure joy. The songwriting is waaaaay to high for a band mostly unknown to the rest of the world.

Lyrics like this is both brilliant to sing along to and spot on:

Watch our missiles blow them sky high
What a cost-efficient way to die!

Robot-Eagle on a flat screen
A 14-year old learning to fly

Blow them up, that's the sound of freedom forming in their minds

Mors Principium Est - Seven.

It's the only album that made a difference for me this year. Several good albums by others but this is the only game changer. It's rare that one of your favorite bands puts out what may be their best but that is what happened here.

I have hopes for next year with DT, Therion and The Anabasis.

Still don't have my final stack ranking, but I certainly know my top 2 disappointments - Nightwish and Ayreon.  I can't say they are bad albums, just way below average (for them), and way below any reasonable expectations (imo).

I really liked Nightwish if we are talking CD1. I've listened to CD2 once and I decided the album is just the first disc. Ayreon was alright but yeah, could've been much better.

I found out I listened seven 2020 albums only, it's rather easy to do a top 5.

1. Pain Of Salvation - Panther
2. Haken - Virus
3. Deftones - Ohms
4. Vennart - In A Dead, Dead Wood
5. Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant

I can leave this link too about a blog I follow, so you can see new names at least. I will try to listen to some of these in the next year:

Finally took some time to write out a best of 2020 list. I don’t usually get this many new releases in one year, and these aren’t all of them even. I’d say it’s been a good year for music (not to mention all the older music I’ve picked up).

Top 5 Albums (in rough order)

1. McStine & Minnemann (s/t): I already told Randy on Facebook this was my AOY so have to stick to it! Just a tremendous mix of pop, metal, and prog. Short and sweet, but packed with hooks, playing, and great choruses. I'm holding off on listening to the follow up until my CD arrives (I have the download but there was a delay in the pressing, so II will be in the running of 2021 maybe).

2. Dyble Longdon - Between a Breath and a Breath: I probably haven't listened to this as much as I should for how highly I think of it. It's a bit of a hard album due to the passing of Judy Dyble and some of the subject matter. But it's the most mature album I heard this year, and one that I feel will really hold up over time and age well. It's a lush and brilliantly written/arranged/recorded album that mixes Judy's folk stylings with Longdon's prog stylings, and ends up somewhere between Peter Gabriel, Talk Talk, and Big Big Train.

3. Rikard Sjoblom’s Gungfly - Alone Together: I think this is the strongest of the three recent Gungfly albums. Feels a bit more focused and a little catchier for a lack of a better word. It's more of what Rikard does, but he does it really well. Just endlessly creative. Some of his guitar playing is just tremendous on this.

4. Jakko Jakszyk - Secrets & Lies: This is the first thing I've heard from Jakko outside of King Crimson, and it's also partially a King Crimson release as most of the band appear on the album (Gavin Harrison does most of the drums), including two tracks featuring most of the band (including Fripp) that came out of some KC writing sessions. It's a dark, moody, cold gray winter day album. It's got what I would describe as a hauntingly beautiful quality. Jakko's voice is silky smooth, and he's a wonderful guitarist as well.

5. Echorec - The Island: A new band out of England who I believe to be just out of school age guys playing some really well done heavy prog (more modern hard rock than prog metal). Sort of Porcupine Tree meets Rush meets Marillion with Thom York-ish vocals or something. It's a download only album that was independently released, but I hope they can give it a full CD release at some point. Bad year for a band to launch a debut album.

Honorable mentions

The Flower Kings - Islands: A bit too long, but if they paired it down to one disc it might have been in the top 5.

Yaatri - Reach (EP): Cool new modern jazz group also out of the UK blending jazz and traditional Indian music.

Tim Bowness/Peter Chilver - Modern Ruins: I downloaded this one on one of the Bandcamp Fridays and it might be higher if I had spent more time with it. Moody, dreamy piano/synth/electronica stuff (i.e. classic Bowness).

Mark Kelly’s Marathon: Not a bad little album in the neo-prog vein. Well performed even if not super original. Standout track is "Puppets" which features Steve Rothery.

Live Albums/Concert films

Big Big Train - Empire: just an amazing performance from an amazing band, expertly recorded and filmed.

Favorite Songs (in no particular order)

McStine & Minnemann - Your Offenses
Dyble Longdon - Tidying Away the Pieces
Gungfly - Clean as a Whistle
Jakko - The Trouble with Angels
Nick D’Virgilio - Where’s the Passion
The Flower Kings - Morning News
Echorec - Flown the Nest
Mark Kelly’s Marathon - Puppets
Tim Bowness/Peter Chilver - Sleeping Face
Fernando Perdomo - The Storm
Yaatri - Pick it Up
Steve Rothery - La Silla
Big Big Train - Winkie (Live)

Best New Artists

Echorec
Yaatri

Best guitar solo

Gungfly - On the Shoulders of Giants

Yeah this year was pretty underwhelming for me in terms of new releases. I did my best to make a top 5 but honestly the Pure Reason Revolution album is the only one that I truly think is excellent, the rest are all kinda close together in the good-but-not-great territory.

1: Pure Reason Revolution - Eupnea (progressive rock)
2: Ulver - Flowers Of Evil (synthpop, electronic, new wave)
3: The Ocean - Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic (progressive metal)
4: Ihsahn - Telemark (EP) (blackened progressive metal)
5: Sordid Pink - Sordid Pink (pop, progressive metal)

That said, I wanted to make a top five for albums I *discovered* this year, because there were some truly amazing ones in there.

1: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (post-rock)
2: Moonsorrow - Jumalten Aika (symphonic black metal, folk metal)
3: Greet Death - New Hell (shoegaze / doomgaze)
4: Pure Reason Revolution - Eupnea (progressive rock)
5: White Ward - Futility Report (black metal)

Honorable Mention: Elder - Reflections Of A Floating World (progressive rock, stoner doom)

1. Pain Of Salvation - Panther (Clear No 1 for me)
2. Haken - Virus (Has moved up to No 2 on my Haken list)
3. Nick D'Virgilio - Invisible (Incredibly well written, well performed and well produced effort)
4. John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity (Best instrumental album I've heard in a long time. Excited for LTE)
5. Neal Morse - Sola Gratia (I don't think an album has ever grown so much on me)

I'm realizing that I kind of forgot about Ayreon.  I'll have to at least give it a listen.  I also need to listen to the Vanden Plas.  The first one was quite good - not mind blowing but very enjoyable.  Seems like a lot of people prefer the new one, which is encouraging.  Haken - I have to listen to it more.  I really do like them live, but the studio albums I can generally just listen to in small doses.

Here's my list, which is by most played.  I have a feeling the Fates will continue to move up.

Katatonia - City Burials - I don't even have the words for how much I love this album and have kind of depended on it (and most of the rest of their catalog) to get through this year.  This is beautiful and intense and heavy and not heavy and full of imagery and everything that makes Katatonia special.  I heard that they had the option to delay the release and chose not to, and I'm so grateful for that.

Conception - State of Deception - I didn't realize how much I played this one.  This is a great album, and so is the EP from 2018.  I didn't know about Conception until after they'd already disbanded, but I did see them at ProgPower and really liked Flow and Parallel Minds.  It's nice to have them back and have Kahn back.

Lunatic Soul - Through Shaded Woods - this is pretty awesome; beautiful and melancholic and yet vibrant.

Kiko Loureiro - Open Source - Kiko's solo albums are always great and this one is no exception.

Fates Warning - Long Day Good Night - I really hope this isn't the last FW album, but if it is, it's a good one to go out on.  This album is a grower, and I like it more each time I hear it.

Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant - hasn't quite reached the heights of In Contact for me, but I still really like this one.  I hope they're eventually able to reschedule that US tour.

Green Carnation - Leaves of Yesteryear - I just wish this one was a bit longer.  The new original songs are great, I like the new version of the old one, and the Solitude cover is beautiful.

DGM - Tragic Separation - this is just a really nice album.  Great vocals and vocal melodies, really energetic.

Mariucz Duda - Lockdown Spaces - this is kind of nice if I'm in the right mood.  It really pales in comparison to the Lunatic Soul album, though they probably shouldn't really be compared.  This one doesn't quite have the intensity I'd prefer.

Deathwhite - Grave Image - this was the first 2020 release that I bought.  I don't really have a lot to say about it.  It's not a favorite but I liked it enough to have listened to it 12 times and will surely continue to listen to it from time to time.

John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity - I was hoping for more from this one.  Some of it I really like; I didn't learn the song titles well but I believe Glassy Eyed Zombies is one.  Other songs were just kind of… I don't know.  Great playing but kind of irritating to listen to.

And just thought I'd give a mention to Leprous - Pitfalls, which came out last year.  I listened to it a ton this year and it still feels very new and sounds awesome.

If my Russian isn't failing me (and granted it's extremely rudimentary and rusty), I'm pretty sure this translates to Righteous Orgy - Time to Awaken Kings???? Maybe Ruslan will chime in to tell me how bad my translation is

John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity
Ozzy Osbourne - Ordinary Man
Protest The Hero - Palimpset
Nightwish - Human :ll: Nature
Haken - Virus

Not a knock on anyone here who has listed it, but to me the Caligula’s Horse record was the most boring and predictable thing I have heard all year. Probably their worst album. I was really disappointed with it.

I barely buy new albums anymore - but next year looks good, with new Mastodon and Dream Theater. Who knows. Maybe even a Metallica album in November ?

but this year - from what i can remember I enjoyed :

• Green Day : Father Of All... - Yes it's really short and a bit weird - but apart from BJA singing falsetto on the title track - it's not like their St Anger or anything... Sugar Youth, Graffitia, Fire,Ready, Aim

are amongst the best songs they've written. Plus several people think it was a contract filler - and I would add that I think ¡Uno! ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! was their first attempt at releasing enough albums

to complete their contract. And when WB told them the trilogy only counted as one album - they made Revolution Radio - then put out FOAMF to finish up. It doesn't explain why they continued to put

out new music on WB though. Maybe they're on a much smaller deal now ? Maybe just a distribution / promotional deal - but they can leave any time ? I dunno.

- I didn't buy it yet but I enjoyed " The Network - Money Money 2020 Part II " - it's not on Reprise AFAIK and I enjoyed it more than their first album.

• Biffy Clyro - A Celebration Of Endings. Great album and WAY better than Ellipsis... - which was patchy as hell beyond the singles. Opposites still my fave BC album.

• Therapy? - "Greatest Hits". A neat little album. All of their 12 charting hit singles - but re - recorded at Abbey Road studios as a live band then edited like a studio album.

Pretty neat. Something Metallica should do if they ever want to release a retrospective. Pick their 20 best loved songs and re-record them all at HQ so they all sound like an album.

I think that's it ! Most of my fave bands didn't do a new album this year or are doing one next year so hopefully that happens.

EDIT : • Trivium - What The Dead Men Say came out this year and that's another cracking album too.

Fates Warning - Long Day Good Night - I really hope this isn't the last FW album, but if it is, it's a good one to go out on.  This album is a grower, and I like it more each time I hear it.

Green Carnation - Leaves of Yesteryear - I just wish this one was a bit longer.  The new original songs are great, I like the new version of the old one, and the Solitude cover is beautiful.

John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity - I was hoping for more from this one.  Some of it I really like; I didn't learn the song titles well but I believe Glassy Eyed Zombies is one.  Other songs were just kind of… I don't know.  Great playing but kind of irritating to listen to.

Hated the Conception album.  The songs are just...I don't know, I found it unlistenable.  I don't think I even made it through the album all the way and I LOVE all the other Conception albums and all of Roy's work with Kamelot so I really wanted to like it, but I knew when I first heard the EP that it wasn't going to be my cup of tea and it's not.  Actually, you are the first person I've encountered who enjoyed "State of Deception" but I think it has more to do with the expectations of fans like me who have been with the band since the beginning.

The Fates Warning album is good, but that's about it.  It's good.  I give it 3.5 stars, up from 3 stars a couple of months ago.  After the masterpiece that was "Theories of Flight" I had probably unrealistically high expectations for "Long Day Good Night" but it's kind of on par with "Darkness In a Different Light."  It's a solid album, but largely forgettable.

The Green Carnation album was a very pleasant surprise.   I agree it could have been longer, but I'll take short and great over long and mediocre any day and twice on Sunday.

The John Petrucci album might be the year's biggest disappointment for me, but again, that has more to do with my unreasonably high expectations going in.   I've never been a big post rock or instrumental metal fan so an album like this is already starting out at a deficit with me.  I just can't really get into it.  I don't really have any strong criticism of it.  Maybe the songs are a bit forgettable.  Dude is still an incredible player and I will always admire his talent, but this album just didn't register with me at all.

I thought In Contact was good, but not as good as Bloom, which in turn I didn't think was as good as TTTT&RE :)

In Contact has some great stuff, like Graves which probably is in my top 5 CH songs. In Contact also had a bunch of memorable stuff, whether it be a melody, guitar solo or a chorus, and I thought Rise Radiant was very lacking in that sort of thing to the point that I can't really remember anything from the record apart from the fact it left me disappointed.

I 100% agree with this.  Rise Radiant was my disappointment of the year.  In Contact is probably my favorite of theirs, with Tide, Thief a close second.  For me, it felt like they were trying to be Haken and failed miserably.

And I didn't really have any expectations and didn't expect to like it so much.  For some reason I've barely listened to the first two (and now see I screwed up the titles above - it should have been In Your Multitude instead of Parallel Minds) but Flow and IYM are great.  So many years later, I didn't expect much and didn't know how Kahn would even sound.  It really surprised me how much I enjoyed it.

I like Darkness a lot actually.  I prefer Theories too, but Fates is just one of those bands that always seem to put out stuff that I enjoy.  It usually takes a few listens, but I always wind up liking it more and more.

No argument there.  If they didn't have anything more they felt should go on the album I'm totally good with what they released.

I can't do a top 5 or 10 or 20 because not much has really stood out to me this year, all my favourite bands are due to release stuff next year. But my favourite album of 2020 is unequivocally John Petrucci's Terminal Velocity. I've played at least one of its songs every day since release, and no week has gone by when the whole thing didn't get a spin at least twice. I absolutely love it. Album of the year for me.

Definitely their worst album. And it probably won't even make it into my top 50 of this year. Maybe not even Top 100. It's just so mediocre. I expected so much more from them.

I quite like Ride Radiant but a few others find it to be the disappointment of the year.  JP's album was disappointing for me and Kirk but Dave's album of the year.  I don't really have a point; I guess I just find it interesting how we experience the same album in different ways.

There's still a heap I need to check but at the moment mine is looking like;

Vanishing Point - Dead Elysium
Pyramaze - Epitaph
Warbringer - Weapons of Tomorrow
Sepultura - Quadra
British Lion - The Burning
Dynazty - The Dark Delight
My Dying Bride - The Ghost of Orion
Vega - Grit Your Teeth
Black Swan - Shake the World
Allen/Olzen - Worlds Apart

No real order but kind of is, if that makes sense.

Still have POS, FW, Vanden Plas, Heathen, Killer Be Killed, Stryper to check out, so there's a chance the last 3 could bump out.

I'm surprised too mate honestly, but I found the songwriting on that one really good and Magnus even gave vibes of the old Allen/Lande stuff too.  Plus his guitar work was above standard.  I'd easily take that over We Are the Night.  I was a little disappointed in that one.

I guess I could replace the Black Swan with the Primal Fear truthfully, that just missed the cut but thinking now, I'd probably grab that to listen to over the Black Swan.  The Vega I just love their sound and style.  I've made no secret of that.

I'll make a top 13, to be more proportional to the 12 months. I've heard about 40 new studio albums this year, but what stood out more were these releases:

1. Haken - Virus. Although my third favorite by Haken, behind Mountain and Affinity, still an amazing album!
2. The Night Flight Orchestra - Aeromantic. Well, they are always incredible excellent.
3. Soilwork - A Whisper of Atlantic EP - it lasts around 37 minutes, so I guess it qualifies as an album. I'm totally a fan of the present David Andersson era.
4. Sepultura - Quadra. Prog trash very creative and inspired! The instrumental quality of today Sepultura is the best of their entire career.
5. Sons of Apollo - XX. I already liked a lot the first and this one is even better.
6. Pain of Salvation - Panther. Great album! It's like a more experimental and refined follow-up of the previous album.
7. John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity. Amazing guitar album, very DT-ish in a lot of places. Also it has MP playing at his A game.
8. Derek Sherinian - The Phoenix. The best Derek's solo album. The songwritting is really great here.
9. Kansas - The Absence of Presence. This one is at the level of Freaks of Nature and Somewhere to Elsewhere (the best Kansas albums after the classic era IMO).
10. Nick D'Virgilio - Invisible Man. I would cut Money and Waiting for No One and I have my perfect version of it! Excellent songs and a very complete album in terms of rock styles.
11. Fates Warning - Long Day Good Night. Another amazing album from this band.
12-13. McStine/Minnemann - I / II. These 2 albums are the definition of great acessible art rock. What a combination of talents!

And a very honorable mention for these other 13 from:
Deep Purple, British Lion, Jeff Scott Soto, Kiko Loureiro, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Satriani, Neal Morse, Reb Beach, Mr Bungle, Illegal Aliens, 3 Rules, Project Alcazar and Octavision.

I've listend a lot of new albums (probably over 100) this year which is a lot compared to other years mainly because of all the hours working from home.
About 30-40 had three or more spins and made some kind of impression which means I either bought them or are planning to play them more often in the next weeks.

If I have to make a list right now, this will be it.

1. The Ocean Collective - Phanerozoic II Mesozoic / Cenozoic
2. Draconian - Under a Godless Veil
3. Haken - Virus
4. Plini - Impulse Voices
5. A.A. Williams - Forever Blue
6. Orbit Culture - Nija
7. Rannock - Reflections Upon Darkness
8. Dool - Summerland
9. Light Field Reverie - Another World
10. The Reticent - The Oubliette
11. Pallbearer- Forgotten Days
12. Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - May Our Chambers Be Full
13. Aleah - Aleah
14. Svalbard - When I Die, Will I Get Better?
15. Paradise Lost - Obsidian

Possible top 15 -20 after more spins:
Fates Warning - Long Day Good Night
Oceans of Slumber - Oceans of Slumber
Ulcerate - Stare Into Death And Be Still
pg.lost -Oscillate
Distant Dream - Point of View
Elder Omens

Other albums I liked:
John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity

Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin kynsi
Enslaved - Utgard

Probably Haken.  The band DTF loves and I have no idea why.

I'm not sure I understand the question here, but if that was directed at Nachtmerrie, Dream Theater was my gateway band to a lot of the bands on his list. And the rest were all recommendations by DTF members or members of the old Mike Portnoy forum.

Yeah there's also at least like 4 or 5 prog bands in his list so idk what that comment was about

I don´t get the comment. It´s not other´s lists in this topic are very prog either.. Is it because you don't like the bands in my list or because you've never heard of them?

But to answer the question

Initially because of Dream Theater and I´ve broadened my taste over the last years. All the albums on my list are better then anything DT has released over the last decade imho. As mentioned by Puppies_On_Acid en Buddyhunter1 there´s still a lot of prog or bands with progressive elements in the list.

Rannoch, The Reticent, A.A. Williams, Unleash the Archers are direct recommendations from this forum.
Others I discovered just by following the reviews on a few international and Dutch websites.

Yea, I think it's pretty old news that there are a hell of a lot of us on here that don't even really listen to Dream Theater anymore.

Nachtmerrie, I think your list has a lot of albums that are very popular with a high percentage of DTF'ers. I mean Dream Theater are progressive metal, and a lot of your picks are progressive metal (although on the more extreme end of the spectrum) so it's hardly a stretch. I think if we end up compiling a top 20 of all the albums ranked in this thread, at least 10 that you mentioned have a shot of being in there!

There are some here I need to check out myself!

4. Sepultura - Quadra. Prog trash very creative and inspired! The instrumental quality of today Sepultura is the best of their entire career.

Glad to see this album get mentioned. I checked it out on a whim after abandoning the band 20 years ago when Against was released and was surprised at how great it was. The last few releases have been incredibly solid which I did not expect after stuff like Nation and Roorback. The absolute highlight of 2020 for me and has surpassed even Arise and Beneath The Remains at this point.

Don't mind Chad.  Just ignore him and he'll go away.  ;D

I love the Orbit Culture pick.  I should spin that a few more times, I think it would have a chance to crack my list actually.

Just that none of these bands in the Top 15 (other than Haken) would seem to have anything in common with DTF (imo).  That's just me though - and my comment was meant to be mostly tongue-in-cheek.

It's all good man... I mean, it's not like DT makes any of my 'top lists' since 2006 either.  For someone with a low post count (no judgment ... just an observation that you aren't overly active or interactive), it seems .... slightly odd?? ... to me.  I've gotten a metric shit-ton of musical recommendations from DTF, so there's absolutely no issue in that.  But these aren't exactly bands that are household names by DTF standards.

Useful reminder that a low post-count doesn't mean someone is particularly new to the forum - he's been here 3 years. And also good to remember that some people read a lot but don't post much. Same with plenty of other people, some whom have been around for over a decade but are still sub-1,000 posts.

I think my top 10 would be something like this.

1.Sepultura-Quadra I heard about Sepultura for a while and meant to check them out eventually. Since I heard good things about this album I finally decided to give it a shot last month. I was not disappointed. This album just blows me away everytime I listen to it  :metal

2.Conception-State of Deception This was my top album until last month, but it still remains the one I listened to the most. I kind of like the Dark Symphony EP better than this, but still a very cool album for me  :tup

3.Igorrr-Spirituality and Distortion I don't know how to describe this one. It's just a mix of lots of different things that shouldn't fit together and yet it's awesome  :lol

And I don't really have anything else in particular to say about the rest of my top 10, so here's the remaining list

4.Haken-Virus
5.The Ocean-Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic/Cenozoic
6.Forndom-Fapir
7.John Petrucci-Terminal Velocity
8.The Birthday Massacre-Diamonds
9.Mr Bungle-The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo
10.Pain of Salvation-Panther

No hard feelings, I'm fine ;)

I'm more of a reader then a poster on DTF. That's mainly because writing in English takes some extra time for me which sometimes withholds me from posting.

I agree with you that the bands on my list aren't household names on DTF except for Haken and maybe Plini.
But bands like Periphery, Gojira, Mastodon and Opeth are quite popular over here. I'm pretty confident that anyone who likes these bands has a fair chance of enjoying The Ocean, Orbit Culture, Rannoch, the Reticent and Pallbearer.

I don't see any reason to question Nachtmerrie's list.  Plenty of prog metal on there... I know it wasn't meant to be serious, but I don't even see how that list is that far off from the type of music enjoyed by this forum. I see a bunch of bands that performed at ProgPower for example.

I would apply your first statement to me for sure.  As a fogey, I've done all the experimenting in musical tastes I need to in my life, and see no need to stray outside of my preferred swim lane - there's enough fantastic music in the genres that I like to satiate my ears.  Perhaps when you younglings reach fogey status, you'll understand / feel the same  ;) :D.  As to the bolded part - that does NOT apply to me.  I've bought about 25 albums this year, and saved another 30 on Spotify.  I've got not complaints about there not being any good music this year.

As a card-carrying "fogey", that doesn't make anyone a hero. It's just a matter of what you like in a song/band/genre.  Like Chad, I've listened to tens of thousands of songs, maybe more, hundreds of bands, maybe more, and tens if not hundreds of genres (and subgenres).  I know what I like.  I like melodies, I like warm sounds (guitar or keyboard) and I don't like atonal, arhythmic stuff.   If some new genre doesn't have a good melody to it, I'm probably not going to like it, and all the open-mindedness in the world isn't going to change that.  I will LISTEN to anything; that doesn't mean I will LIKE everything.

I'm more careful than most about using terms like "good music" (there is no "good music", only music I like or don't like), and yeah, there seems to be a dearth of music I like in recent years. Some of that is simply because I don't have time or bandwidth to absorb all of it like I did the classic material of my youth.  It's not in my DNA yet.  Even bands I like - Ayreon comes to mind, so does Rival Sons - I don't have the time or bandwidth to really dig in like it deserves. Some of it is periodic cycles; if I'm being honest, when I look back, there are cycles or periods that I seem to like more material than others.  That doesn't mean I don't like something from all years, but there seems to be a pattern.

I'm only 29 but I kinda feel like a fogey in some ways. 5 years ago I was the person putting hours upon hours every week seeking out new albums and I could go through 4 new albums in a week and end the year on 200 new albums listened to. And you do discover a lot of music, but it can also be draining because you sift through a lot of stuff. It worked fine for me then because I was unemployed for a lot of the time but now with work and other hobbies, I don't really feel the need to invest that time in new discoveries anymore. I think I've reached that point where I'm happy letting the music come to me rather than actively seeking it out, and I still get some new discoveries each year but I'll focus on the stuff I know and like, and when I want something new I'll go with whatever seems to be getting good reviews.

But I think also just for my own enjoyment, it's much more rewarding to me to do a deep dive with a band or artist, get into their whole discography rather than jump around and check out one new album by 20 different bands.

Same.  I've got 20 years on you, and realized I was burned out on sampling 150-200 albums per year.  I'd spend virtually all of my listening time in 'discovery' mode, and not enough time on 'enjoyment' mode - whether current year releases, recent releases, or stuff I've already loved for decades.  Now I try to balance my time more across my entire (20k+ song) library.  If something doesn't grab me within the first 3-4 tracks, I move on.  Like I said, there's enough great music (for my tastes) to listen to that I don't need to spend my discretionary time listening to bad/mediocre/good music.

I'm 41 but have been that fogey for years between my 25th and 35th. Sticking to the same bands and mainly dependent on commercial radio for the rare new band I liked.

That's has changed over the last few years and 2020 was quite extreme because working from home gave me many more hours to choose my own music.
Over the next years I want to find some sort of balance between discovering new music and diving deeper into the cataloque of some recent discoveries.

I made a rule for myself to listen to any new album I get a minimum of 10 times before I get something new to avoid being in what you call constant "discovery mode". I might do this with 3-4 albums at a time so every 2 weeks or so I have a playlist with a different group of albums, plus I always throw in older albums that I want to relisten to or go through a particular band's discography one album at a time (bands like DT or Genesis who I've been listening to for 20+ years but don't play regularly anymore). It's a great way to get mileage out of new and old albums and if after 10 listens it still doesn't grab me, I rarely return to it.

I've gone out of my comfort zone, mainly black metal and harsh vocals over the past few years, and I've found a ton of great music. But yes, I'm a Card Carrying Fogey, and my music listening can still be limiting. But I've probably sampled at least 200 albums, saved 40-50 on Spotify, and probably made about 15 purchases this year.

Compared to the last few years, I didn't think this was a great year, at least in terms of music that I liked.

Yeah I’m pretty sure that 30 years from now I’ll have fallen into a comfort zone, and to be honest I’m really looking forward to it. I’m just thinking back only as far as 2 years I was spending so much energy looking for albums, saving them and then spinning them once or not at all. Also feeling this constant urge to find new stuff is exhausting.

I have sort of a comfort zone now, the comfort zone changes depending on mood, but for each mood it’s fairly limited now. I can get used to this, gives me so much more time and energy to do things I  actually enjoy!

I think the main complaint is towards people who don’t discover a lot of music in a year and then claim that year was a bad year for music, but I only know one or two people on this forum who do that.

Well, not to argue with you by any means, but people just have their own way of discovering or listening to music. Not everyone feels the need to painstakingly search out new bands. Some have their circle of bands and related bands and are happy with that. And sometimes in "their" world, it may not be a great year.

I realize when people "this hasn't been a good year " really just simply means "I haven't found a lot of music that I like".

Aww, I thought for sure Paysage d'Hiver would make your top ten (came close though). Cool to see Pain of Salvation, Olhava, The Reticent, and Svalbard on the list though! The Reticent definitely needs way more exposure. That Bròn album was a massive surprise from last year too. Like, they had 4 albums previously that I sampled and were all pretty much trash.

Looks like I need to check out Bagdadski Vor and Astolat.

On the other hand, I just haven't been able to get into The Weeknd, even though it has lots of elements which, when combined, I should like....

I ended up picking up their previous black metal album (which is different from their electronic albums which are mediocre) and it's

well, it's fine, but way less distinctive than the new one. same vibe, less development, basically
