So I have been on a major kick with black metal of all kinds the past couple months. I've been listening to the genre for over 15 years now, my first exposure being Enslaved, but I've really dug in to it a ton recently. In this thread I thought I would share a new album each week, whether a past favorite or something new I've discovered, with the rest of you. I know the majority of those who post here probably don't listen to any black metal and that's ok. However, I know a few who listen to a lot of black metal, like Cyril, and some who have started dabbling their toes into the black metal pool, Katt, TAC, and Ariich.
I will be covering the vast majority of sub genres in black metal (Atmospheric, Melodic, Progressive, DSBM, Symphonic, WarMetal, Folk, Blackgaze, Blackened Thrash, Post-Black, Viking, Gothic, and Ambient). I probably won't cover too much if any first wave and/or straight ahead black metal. I'm more into the mixtures of sounds.
How this will work is, I will post a new album each week (most likely on Saturday/Sunday), and then we can all listen to it (those that are interested) and discuss it. If you are so inclined, you can give it a rating out of 10. I plan to keep a record in this OP of each album and the cumulative ratings it gets (assuming people actually want to rate it. If any of you have any other ideas for the thread, please let me know.
Another point, I do have a list of albums I will be posting put together already, but if you have any albums you would like to suggest to be featured in the thread, just send me a PM and I will sprinkle in suggestions at random intervals.
Sound good so far? Good.

Tracklist
1 Ad Infinitum
2 Elusive
3 The Oort Cloud
4 I Am
5 Fallen
6 Samsãra
7 May Whatever Cleanses Me Take Form
8 A Mirror of Life
This is a relatively new discovery for me. It's a great sounding Atmospheric black metal. The track Elusive is a favorite of mine.

More than half of the albums will most likely be in the Atmospheric realm, but I do enjoy stuff in almost every other subgenre.
-
The ONLY kind of black metal I like is atmospheric. So I will check any and all
Dolby Atmos BM. Cool thread idea Pup.
-
I'm definitely interested... but I'm also in the middle of my own roulette! :lol
-
Will check it out tonight after dinner and I send in Ariich's roulette.

Pup, do you think you'll be sending anything from this thread in my roulette? If definitely not, then I'll try and follow along and check things out.
-
I'm up for some new black metal of some variety. I'll give this a go after blasting the new Hirsch Effekt.
-
Okay, cool

So far nothing I have planned for this thread is planned for your roulette. I'll let you know if that changes.

I'm gonna use them! :lol
Funny, I thought I had them Saved on my Spotify, but I have Omega District and Omega Virus.
-
Oh man, there's no way I'm putting myself through an hour of THAT tonight. :lol
Since we have a week, I'm going to break it off in chunks.
I hit the first two songs, and I ain't gonna lie. That was pretty tough to get through. The first song was awful. :lol
At least the second one had some bits in the second half that were OK.

That's fine. I'm perfectly aware that these albums aren't all going to be for everyone. I'm sure you will find a few of them to like though. So don't give up on my thread if you don't like this first album. Check back next weekend.
-
Oh hell no, I'll be here all week. I'll get through the next few tracks tomorrow.
I'm totally not going anywhere! :)
-
I will say that I had a black metal phase in my late teens. I regret every minute of it. :lol
-
Aren't you still in your late teens?
-
Huge black metal fan, so Interested to see what you have to share. Hopefully I'll find some new recommendations in lieu of this!

I remember from some of your other posts that you were a Black Metal fan. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on some of these albums. :tup :metal

I'll try to follow this for the albums that are on Yandex.Music streaming service. This one is, so I'll give it a spin during my commute next week!

Nice, the more the merrier! I'd be interested in your thoughts. I have an album by a band from Russia in the queue for this thread in probably a few weeks. You know, since all Russians know each other :neverusethis: ;)
-
The Oort Cloud was fine for what it is. Some cool sounds.
I Am was ok but still pretty rough.
Fallen was definitely good though and easily the best song so far.
-
That whole run between Elusive and Fallen is incredible.
I will admit the first track, Ad Infinitum isn't the greatest.
-
Not sure if I would call it incredible. :lol
But Fallen was really good.

Hey, even if you only get 1 song out of the album that you like, that's good enough for me. :tup

I hope you find something to like on this album, but I think the vocals might not be to your liking.
Just be brutally honest in your assessment. :)

Brutally honest: I'm halfway into this and not having a good time. There is an angry toilet backing up and someone is hitting a very large tupperware a lot. I am waiting for the atmospheric part of the black metal to kick in but other than The Oort Cloud (which wasn't much of anything) it's not there. Of course there's still the back half to go.
I'll check back on whatever's posted next, of course. For my tastes, I'm more of a Summoning, Spectral Lore, Midnight Odyssey type atmosblack fan, as per the playlist you recently sent me. :corn
EDIT: Okay, so yeah, not really a fan of this one unfortunately. I really love the band and album name, but it's too much noisy black metal and not enough contrast to make the noisy black metal meaningful to me.

Is it a common feature of atmospheric black metal to have an abundance of (what I call) white noise? It's challenging, but not to difficult to get past.

I wonder what it would sound like if you used white-noise removing software on atmospheric black metal. :lol

I would say about 50/50. This album admittedly is a bit on the noisy side. The next album to be featured is going to be much less noisy, but more dissonant, if that makes sense. :P

Looks like it does have a "Noise reduction" feature.
Now I just need to download some ABM to try it on. :lol

OK, so I'm glad I didn't quit on this album because it ends really strong. The two best tracks are Fallen and the long May Whatever Cleanses Me Take Form. MWCMTF is pretty cool, with lots of different and most importantly identifiable parts. It gets messy about the 10 minute mark for a bit, but it settles in nicely before it ends.
A Mirror Of Life is a nice enough instrumental. A kind of like "thanking my ears for listening and decompressing my eardrums" final track.
-
I gave the album a listen last night and I liked it. Despite the whole "white noise" thing the sound is generally pretty strong and works well.

-
How's everyone doing on this album?
Looking forward to the next one already I'm sure :)
-
I've been prioritising my roulette so only gave it the one listen (which will likely be the case each week), but will definitely come back to it later on for another listen or two.
-
I don't like it and I'm waiting for the next. Just being honest :lol
-
Fair points all around. :)
-
i spun it once and i thought it was pretty good, seemed a lot more diverse than most ABM too
i also was expecting way worse production from what other people were saying lol
-
I've spun it twice but I don't remember much of it when it's finished. Admittedly, I was a bit distracted from simultaneously watching Doom Eternal play-throughs...although, it is strangely appropriate.
-

Yeah that's a good point, I think that's something I quite liked about it as well.
i also was expecting way worse production from what other people were saying lol
I think that was mainly Podaar, my comments in reply were about ABM in general as I hadn't listened to it at that point, and once I did I similarly commented that the sound was pretty good.
-
I don't agree with the diversity comment at all. Over half the record is just straight-up harsh black metal noise, hardly diverse imo. *shrug* Looking forward to what the ol Pupster's got in his bag of goodies this weekend though.
-
that's why i specified "diverse for ABM" :lol

To try and clarify, I wasn't trying to imply the production was shit (it's not) it was the deliberate choice of having instrumentation that goes "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH". That's what I meant by "white noise".
-

What is a Doom Eternal playthrough?
Doom Eternal is a relatively new video game (an interactive electronic form of entertainment) that came out on March 20th. You beat the shit out of alien demon monster things in really over-the-top gory ways with your hands and crazy guns and it's a blast, pun intended. A playthrough is someone playing through a video game. Quiz on Saturday at 9 AM sharp CST.
-

This part in particular cracked me up. :rollin

This got a full on belly laugh out of me too. :rollin
And I have to agree with Parama Cyril about the diversity. There is quite an eclectic assortment of sounds for AtmoBlack.
-
Gave it another listen this evening, and yeah I like it, but I don't love it. Looking forward to whatever is next though!

Where’s our new album?? ;D

New album coming after I get off work.

Tongues - Hreilia (https://open.spotify.com/album/0SQDNMj4L1jmnKGu2cQ9sg?si=U4jLfPsvTYG_NZICITp-Jw) | (Bandcamp) (https://i-voidhangerrecords.bandcamp.com/album/hreilia)
(Black Metal w/ Touches of Death/Doom and a bit of Atmosphere/Dissonance)
1 Perennial Waves
2 Theophagus Wounds of Earth
3 Interlude
4 ...And the Ever Watchful Clouds
5 Grove of Mithridate
6 Acumen Numinous
7 Hreilia
Once again a relatively new discovery for me, even though the album came out in 2017. This has a great dissonant Doomy vibe mixed with the Black Metal.
-
I listened to just the first two songs which was enough to convince me this just is not for me at all lol

That's ok, but to be honest the back half of the album would probably be much more to your liking, or maybe not. :dunno:
-
maybe, but if i disliked/was bored by the first 15ish minutes that much i don't really have much use for the album as a whole anyways

I'm watching I Love Lucy though so to be fair I am 80 years old.

OK, just made it through the first two songs. Can't say I enjoyed the first one, and after the second one started, I was worried. But it ended up OK.
But that's all I'm putting my ears through tonight. :lol
-
OK..
Ran through Interlude. Ok.
..And The Ever Watchful Clouds-It started out like it could be interesting, but man it was really quite awful. :lol
Grove Of Mithridate was actually pretty cool though and easily the best song so far.

-
Week 2 doesn't seem to be going down so well. :lol Let's give it a go.
EDITS:
Hmm, I liked the atmospheric first few minutes of Perennial Waves, but when it kicks off it gets a bit... muddy maybe, for my tastes. The combination of dissonant music and production that isn't very clear or punchy doesn't really work for me.
Theophagous is ok I guess, seems to jump between some cool moments and some pretty blah ones (for the same reasons as the opener - at this point I suspect this album won't really be my thing).
Ever Watchful Clouds is just kinda there. I found it really monotonous to be honest.
Grove of Mithridate is similar to Theophagus, maybe a bit better overall as there's some melodic and atmospheric moments in the second half that are pretty good. Still not really my thing though for the most part.
Acumen was alright too, similar to Grove really. And then the atmospheric closer was good. Second half of the album definitely more interesting than the first, but it's all a bit eh overall.
-
(https://i.imgur.com/7casZsh.gif)
Well... waiting for the next one.
-
Two songs in and, the dissonance is strong in this one. The atmospheric stuff is interesting but I prefer the more rocking moments, like the last half of Theophagous Wounds of Earth.
Loved Interlude. Evil as fuck.
Thought I had more to say about ...And The Ever Watchful Clouds, but TAC kinda summed it up nicely.
I mostly enjoyed Grove Of Mithridate but I'm put off by the drumming, I can't tell if it's intentional or just random pounding. Oh, and less cowbell!
The album finished strong with the last two numbers.
All told, I think I'd rather spin to this album than the one from last week, but I'm not really eager to relisten to either, at this point.
-
You know what, Puppies?
I kinda liked Interlude, honest.

Apparently my goal is to turn people off of Black metal, one week/album at a time :lol
I like weird stuff..... :corn
-
Hey you know I'm just waiting for that Summoning worship black metal dawg :lol :corn
-
OK, just finished.
Acumen Numinous...That ain't working. It's like a giant granola bar where I have to eat through all the coconut, nuts, and other shit just to get a chocolate bit. Not worth it.
The title track? I mean what is that?
What's weird is that while making this album they had to cut songs that um..weren't good enough. :lol
-
How would you guys feel about me doing 2 albums a week? I have enough stuff to take us through the year and beyond even doing 2 a week. Or should I just stick to the one.
Only reason I ask is to give you guys a couple of options to increase your chances of liking an album/artist. I know most black metal isn't the easiest music to really get into, so maybe 2 albums might be too much? I dunno......any feedback?
-
Whatever you want to do is fine. I'd probably just read the room, and once you think everyone's gotten through the latest, then maybe post the next one.
I'm going to listen to whatever you post so it's all good to me. :)
-
one a week is already too many for me tbh :lol i'd probably drop off if we did two a week, i can't even promise i'll keep up with one
-
I could easily do 2 per week, your call!
EDIT: Seriously, I could easily do 2 in a day, no problem. But I'm hard to please; my favorite power metal is, well, light on the 'metal' to most people. My favorite black metal is less black metal than it is dungeon synth. etc.
-
I'm at 2 songs per day. :lol
-
I just want to say there is black metal I like because as per Cyril's recommendation I checked out The Density Parameter by Mesarthim (I think Pup sent me one of their songs recently) and omfg it's amazing.

We will be getting to more of that kind of stuff in this thread, just hold tight. :corn

Yeah I sent you Fragmenting on that post roulette ep/concept album.
-
I'm behind on this but just checked out Omega Centauri and ehh. The production was better than I expected but that was about the only good thing about that record for me. The other good thing is the last song which was listenable. I guess black metal in general might not be for me, we'll see.
I need a break before I listen to this week's album.

That's the thing though. There is so much variety in black metal, you are bound to find something you like. :metal
-
All great records thus far. None that I would claim as my top 10 in the genre, but all serviceable black metal albums. Keep 'em coming.
PS: If you happen to do a post for Hyperion's Seraphical Euphony sometime, shoot me a PM, I'd love to do a guest write-up for it. One of my absolute favorite black metal records. Also melodic black, so potentially more palatable for others in the thread :D

I kind of forgot about that album. When it first came out I liked it for the most part. I'll add it to the list, if anything just so I can have an excuse to revisit it
-
Whoa whoa whoa, this got bumped from the first page? :lol
I'll have a new album up in a little bit. :corn

(Atmoshpheric Black Metal)
1 Glück 11:07
2 Geisterschiff 7:52
3 Dunkler Mann 8:37
4 Findling 9:42
5 Der Pakt 7:55
6 Das Ende 8:36
This is an album I've liked for a long while. It was suggested to me in the metal thread over at the old Bethesda forums over 10 years ago now. This has a very Atmospheric sound, with touches of ambient thrown in for good measure. It's kind of like a cross between Paysage d'Hiver and Blut Aus Nord.
-
Cool, I'm on it as soon as Dance Of Death finishes.
-
Will listen soon :corn
-
Not sure why, but the album cover makes me think of Evermind. :lol
-
OK, made it through the first two tracks. The first one is really cool. Probably longer than it needs to be, but very cool nonetheless. I liked it.
The second song started off great, and I thought we were really on to something here, but it eventually lost me.
Looking forward to the rest though.

Yeah, that first track is awesome. The ambient nature at the beginning really gives it a hauntingly beautiful sound and lays the groundwork for the rest of the awesomeness on the album. I always have a hard time deciding which is my favorite song here, but if I had to pick it would probably be Findling.
-

Oh, yeah? That sounds completely awesome! Or it would if I know what the fuck you just said. :lol
Probably won't get a chance to listen until Monday.

-
Finished Dunkler Mann.
I was getting a bit concerned, but from the 6 minute point on, I really like it.
Vocally, I hear a little Udo.
-
Findling….About 7 minutes too long. For the first few minutes I thought it was cool, but then it stayed constantly pointless until the end.
-

Huh. :corn
What are your thoughts overall? I thought you might like this one more than the previous 2.
-
Well, I'm only through the first four songs. There are parts of all 4 that I really like.
The 2nd and 4th songs start off good, but never close the deal. Dunkler Man was the opposite. 2nd half is really good on that one.
-
:corn
-
OK, just finished the album. Der Pakt was pretty cool. I liked that song. Das Ende..well, I'm not sure. The vocals got really tough halfway through.
Allinall, I would say that this was probably the best album so far, or the least worst. ;D
I found the songs unnecessarily too long, with not nearly enough differentiation.
-
:corn
Did you ever listen to it?

He was so inspired by it, he's doing a no metal roulette. :lol

That was kind of my commentary, not gonna lie... I got 2 songs in and tapped out again. :(
-
my take: i listened to the entire thing and felt completely neutral about it. better than the last one. not as good as the first one. it was the least interesting of the three though; very straightforward and not many surprises; i think every (or almost every track) started with the exact same ambient noises too lol. nothing really stood out but i'd listen to it again, at least
-
I've got a bit of extra time...I'm going in.
-
I'm finding myself with less listening time this week, so I'm having to prioritise my roulette, but I've teed this up in a Spotify playlist, so I will check it out later on.
-
I've got a bit of extra time...I'm going in.
How'd you like it?
I know the songs are all on the longer side and may not move in as many directions as a lot of prog fans may like, but a major part of what I like about Atmospheric black metal is the almost hypnotic nature of the overall sound and this album very much works for me in that regard. Plus, I think the atmospheric ambient passages work extremely well here, despite what Cyril says :)

I don't think he's even checked in on this thread, but yeah he would probably like this album too

I just PM'd him.

Easily
by far
the best album yet!
It was like actual music. Constructed songs that actually make sense.
-
Don't get used to it, next week goes back to more Atmospheric Black metal, except the next one is going to be quite different from the other atmo black in the thread so far.

So, good then? :lol

:frank:
-
i listened to like two-thirds of it before realizing i'd had it on for like a half hour and had barely been able to actively pay attention to it at all, but i kind of expected that
melodic black metal + melodic death metal + power metal are usually just the same genre with different vocals/production as far as i'm concerned jhdfjbgsj

you can, but i'll just delete the PM without opening it

Yeah, I ended up getting distracted again. I was about halfway through the album and was really struggling to find enjoyment. As a result, I have no desire to revisit the experience. I'd rather move on to this latest selection.

Fair enough. And again, I realize my taste in black metal doesn't align with the tastes of this forum as much as I would like. I'm also intentionally staying away from the more popular choices because the majority here already knows them. I may throw in a few of the more popular bands if there are some of you that are complete black metal virgins. They might be a better jumping off point for some of you.
-
So TAC killed this thread by saying he liked this weeks album :lol
That's ok..... :bump:
-
I'm still focusing on my roulette for now, but I promise to come back to all of these once that's finished!
-
Yeah I kinda got my plate full, but my track record with these is not good so far anyway :lol
-
I understand that with both of you running roulettes it kind of takes up most of your listening. You just need to stop sleeping so you can injest more music! :tup
-

I mean, I'm pretty much doing that already. I've not really been getting enough sleep for weeks. :lol

you're both insane for running roulettes where you have to sift through 5-6 hours of music a week every week, i can barely manage 1 hour

Well, we're listening to good music, and lots of it, pandaboi. Mostly. :loser:
Also in my first roulette I was doing roughly 10 hours of music every week. :metal
-
yeah that's fair nobody sends good music in any of my roulettes anymore and i don't know what to do about it other than not run more roulettes :sadpanda:

I can't tell if this is you being ironic or if you're just burned out on listening to music :lol maybe you should run a lead-free roulette like Kattelox is doing
-
oh no i've been finding plenty of killer stuff on my own, definitely not burnt out on music :P
it's at least partially sarcastic as there was a lot of good stuff in my last roulette but, eehhHH
i think i've just moved past the need for roulettes. sure i get some good stuff out of them but the amount of effort i put into them doesn't feel repaid with the amount of great music that would justify that effort
-

Fixed.

I just PM'd him.
I'm here finally. About to check it out now.
Yeah, don't know why I haven't popped into this thread but here I am.

It was an enjoyable listen. Very melodic and a lot of cool stuff going on. Even got a slight Agalloch vibe in places which was cool.

Week 5
(https://e.snmc.io/i/fullres/w/76c2de1b150a33dc8e0f10026b1bbd2f/6197805)
Battle Dagorath - I-Dark Dragons of the Cosmos (https://open.spotify.com/album/7Kzth89R1d1FQKEOdQlJOl?si=CBd3dpWtR5mvwKbx2bZfjA) | Bandcamp (https://battledagorath.bandcamp.com/album/i-dark-dragons-of-the-cosmos)
Atmospheric Black Metal
1. From the Black Sun's Fire
2. Phantom Horizons Beyond
3. Return to Gates of Dawn
4. Through the Rite of the Stars
5. Transfixion of the Spheres
6. Psychic Abduction
This album is Spacey, Atmospheric, Epic, with a bit of a coldness to it. Fitting for the subject matter really. It has a great layered guitar sound that feels open and yet distant, like it's literally coming from the vacuum of space.
-
haha this album (and its sister album) went into my rotation this week so uuhh yeah this is exactly 100% up my alley but also it means i get to skip for this week
-
Yeah, it's a great album. I saw you post about them on Twitter last month and it reminded me of this band, so I just had to put them in the BMAW list. I remember getting their first album when it was first released based on the cover art alone, never having heard a single note of the band. I hated it at the time and didn't come back to the band until Cursed Storm of Ages was released, which is also awesome. Now I can go back and enjoy the first album, but it's not nearly as good as this one and the album that follows this.
-
new one is coming this year, apparently, but no official release date yet!

I like the sound of it instrumentally, but wow the effect on the vocals does absolutely nothing for me.
Only listened to the first (real) track so far.

There is only Battle Dagorath! The more I listen to this album, the more I enjoy it. And I've been listening to this album for years... :metal
-
I've been able to listen to a lot more music this week, so I'm comfortably on track with my roulette and finally able to listen to some other things a bit more. So I'm catching up on this thread.
Lunar Aurora - mixed feelings the result of which is an overall meh. I actually like a lot of the black metal stuff going on, it's pretty epic and the grand sections with harsh vocals work best. What I really do not like, at all, is the few segments that have choral-style clean vocals - the vocals just sound completely detached from everything else going on. Not just production-wise (which I could forgive), but musically as well, they just completely clash and it makes it borderline unlistenable for me. So a lot of the album is solid enough (if not the most exciting), but Gluck and Der Pakt are genuinely offensive to my ears. :lol
Now onto to Darkenhold which has been the best received so far, so hopefully more up my street.
EDIT: Ok yeah the Darkenhold is solid stuff. Much punchier and generally more exciting, although it's a little cold and not as richly melodic as I'd like or as much as some of the stuff I've been sent in my roulette. Overall I'd probably put in roughly on a par with the Omega Centauri from week 1 (maybe slightly better) as while I'm enjoying this style more, that had much more sense of atmosphere.

Week 6
(https://e.snmc.io/i/fullres/w/6b561c211434d2cd9435fafe7fe410c0/2681566)
Arkona - Goi, Rode, Goi! (https://open.spotify.com/album/3yWvHRfye6vUD7C1UazdML?si=6HgheZFmTma_QrRP5IQxFw)
Folk Black Metal
1. Гой, Роде, гой! / Hail, Rod, Hail!
2. Тропою неведанной / On the Unknown Trail
3. Невидаль / The Wonder
4. На моей земле / In My Land
5. Притча / The Parable
6. В цепях древней тайны / In Chains of Ancient Mystery
7. Ярило / Yarilo
8. Лики бессмертных богов / Faces of Immortal Gods
9. Коло Нави / Kolo of Nav'
10. Корочун / Korochun
11. Память / The Memory
12. Купалец / Kupalets
13. Аркона / Arkona
14. Небо хмурое, тучи мрачные / Sullen Sky Lurid Clouds
Between having one of the best female vocalists in extreme metal, the epic folkiness of the music, the variety of sounds and instruments, and a great balance between the folk bits and black metal, this album is a classic in my mind. The plethora of traditional folk instruments used on this album really make it sound authentic and bring a little something extra to the album to make it stand out.
Also I translated the song titles for you guys, since they are all in Russian. Evermind, feel free to correct my translations. :)
-
Still have to listen to the last one. Work has been a bitch and last weekend was graduation. I'm off Mon and Tues so I should be able to catch up on this and the Tull thread.
-
i'll try checking this one out but i don't have high hopes seeing as i've never been big on anything i've checked out from arkona before and oh my god it's almost 80 minutes long
-
Sullen Sky :rollin
I think you mostly did good except it should be On My Land and I think I'd say the sky in the last track should be either sombre or heavy, it mostly means it's just full of clouds like you can't even see the sun and the rain will perhaps begin soon, I'm not sure "sullen" is the right word for that.
By the way I know these guys and even saw them live!

How did you like their live show?
-
I mean I liked them, but honestly I could name 10+ bands that were more entertaining mostly because it's not really my type of music. But it's worth the money though, if any of you have a chance to see them, go see them, they're great at what they do!
-
Right, finally getting caught up on this thread.
Battle Dagorath - not really for me. I dig the more atmospheric moments, but the metal (which is very dominant) is just not my cup of tea and doesn't have enough variety to keep my interest - it has that whole "white noise" thing going on and I just find it quite relentless and monotonous I'm afraid.
Arkona on the other hand, best of the thread so far! Absolutely love the variety, the balance of heavy, dissonant and melodic, and of course the folk elements. It's going to take more listens but this could be my first 4 star album of the thread!

That Arkona album is awesome! :metal Ярило is one of my favorite songs ever, really fun song!
I was not a fan of the last album, but this one is great.
-
i put this on while doing A Very Boring Repetitive Thing and it ended up interesting me less than the boring thing i was doing, which does not surprise me at all because I have zero expectations that i'll ever be the slightest bit interested in a full album of this style. i stopped after the 15 minute song because zzzzz

I feel like you don't like anything anymore.... Then again I know your tastes in Black Metal tend to be very specific. Next week's album might be more up your alley.
-
i like plenty of things :lol just not folk metal of any variety
-
i like plenty of things :lol just not folk metal of any variety
Except Wilderun.
-
wilderun is more prog death that has folk elements to it! folk metal is where the fantasy dragon riding melodies are the entire point
the latest wilderun album wasn't folk at all anyways it was more symphonic :P and i HATED their first album, which well and truly was folk metal (pirate metal tho not dragon metal)
-
Sorry for missing a week guys. As Ariich already knows, I've been dealing with a family emergency since last week. Long story short (and without getting into specifics that I would rather not at this time), things are looking better for now, but only time will tell.
Anyways, I'll be returning this thread from it's 1 week hiatus tomorrow at some point. Stay tuned.

send this week's album in the next round of my roulette (if you survive)

Seems I killed my thread by missing a week. Or everyone is just busy with roulettes....
-
I'm trying to contend with nearly 12 hours of music in my final round. :lol I'll get to this in a few days!
-
I don't even have time for the albums I'm supposed to be checking out each week. I promise I'm gonna do a massive catch-up on this whenever I find the time. Haven't forgotten about these!
Even if the thread dies I'll bump it up, so take that :hat
-
Seems I killed my thread by missing a week. Or everyone is just busy with roulettes....
I’m behind.
-
i'll check it out at some point this week but usually i don't check these out until like tuesday or wednesday at best bcuz it works out best for my schedule
-
No pressure, I just wanted to make sure I didn't kill my own thread and everyone lost interest. :corn
-
listened to this week's album. feels like it's a bit lacking in personality but the sound is good. may or may not revisit it.

Battle Dagorath - I-Dark Dragons of the Cosmos (https://open.spotify.com/album/7Kzth89R1d1FQKEOdQlJOl?si=CBd3dpWtR5mvwKbx2bZfjA) | Bandcamp (https://battledagorath.bandcamp.com/album/i-dark-dragons-of-the-cosmos)
Atmospheric Black Metal
1. From the Black Sun's Fire
2. Phantom Horizons Beyond
3. Return to Gates of Dawn
4. Through the Rite of the Stars
5. Transfixion of the Spheres
6. Psychic Abduction
This album is Spacey, Atmospheric, Epic, with a bit of a coldness to it. Fitting for the subject matter really. It has a great layered guitar sound that feels open and yet distant, like it's literally coming from the vacuum of space.
OK, going to try and catch up.
The good news...this album has the most badass song titles ever :metal
The bad news...They only needed one of those titles because every song is the f'n same!
Not really a fan of this one.

Folk Black Metal
1. Гой, Роде, гой! / Hail, Rod, Hail!
2. Тропою неведанной / On the Unknown Trail
3. Невидаль / The Wonder
4. На моей земле / In My Land
5. Притча / The Parable
6. В цепях древней тайны / In Chains of Ancient Mystery
7. Ярило / Yarilo
8. Лики бессмертных богов / Faces of Immortal Gods
9. Коло Нави / Kolo of Nav'
10. Корочун / Korochun
11. Память / The Memory
12. Купалец / Kupalets
13. Аркона / Arkona
14. Небо хмурое, тучи мрачные / Sullen Sky Lurid Clouds
Between having one of the best female vocalists in extreme metal, the epic folkiness of the music, the variety of sounds and instruments, and a great balance between the folk bits and black metal, this album is a classic in my mind. The plethora of traditional folk instruments used on this album really make it sound authentic and bring a little something extra to the album to make it stand out.
:metal :metal :metal
That album is awesome. Not a fan of female harsh vocals, but musically, this album is fantastic. One of the best so far, Pup!

Glad you liked that one. It's easily a favorite of all time for me. :metal

3. II
4. Die Wand
5. III
6. Erschöpft
7. IV
8. Emotionale Ödnis
9. V
10. Verfall
OK, I just caught up! ;D
This is actually pretty good. Lots of the passages sound a bit samey, but each of the main 5 tracks hits some great grooves. On E Sturm, I wish it ended about the 7:30 area, as that last vocal part really didn't fit. I found it jarring.
The last song, Verfall is really awesome! I love where it went after the mellow part in the middle.
Cool album Pup!
Now you're the one that's behind! :P

Empyrium - Songs of Moors and Misty Fields (https://open.spotify.com/album/6gPLDIzLphECmq7j4A2RPi?si=76vLqGVMQRWsg6aSolQEXA) | Bandcamp (https://empyrium.bandcamp.com/album/songs-of-moors-and-misty-fields)

1. When Shadows Grow Longer
2. The Blue Mists of Night
3. Mourners
4. Ode to Melancholy
5. Lover’s Grief
6. The Ensemble of Silence
This one is quite different and quite varied. Despite everyone involved with this band has a background in Black Metal and the music being grounded in Black Metal, this takes on so many different forms and sounds. There's bits of folk here, touches of symphonic metal there, a little bit of a Gothic undertone, with Doom and Gloom surrounding it all. And yet there is a definite quality of beauty to it all. You could call this the precursor to everything Agalloch would eventually become a few years later.
-
Ok I'm catching up now.
Tardigrada was good. I still don't think I loved it, but it feels like you're inching closer towards finding something that's squarely within atmospheric black metal that I do love. The melodic side is really good and on my second listen I found that, as well as all the interlude tracks which are lovely, each of the five main songs also had some really great moments. There's still something about the production - the high reverb, the distant vocals, that doesn't seem to work for me, and particularly in the heavier/darker sections it just lacks a bit of punch.
I'm on my first listen of this week's album, and it's very good so far. I'll obviously give a fuller impression once I've given it a couple of good listens. Also, between your comments and having seen them mentioned a lot recently, I'm going to have to return to Agalloch and see if I like them more than I did before.
-
That high reverb/distant vocals thing seems to be something only me and Cyril really enjoy around these parts. I guess you could call it an acquired taste. At the same time, there are bands that I've listened to that do that style that I absolutely don't like, so it's definitely a case by case basis. You just have to find your niche. :tup

Pup, this album is all kinds of awesome! :metal :metal
Damn, it's amazing and probably my favorite so far. This is really easy on the ears.
The Ensemble Of Silence might be the coolest song title ever. The piano part in the middle of Lover's Grief is incredible (as in Incredible Hulk...)
I like the Gothic influence. Two of my favorite albums from this year and last lean heavily towards it.
-
Yeah I agree Tim, this Empyrium album is really great. I might even like it slightly more than the Arkona, but definitely around on a par with that. Just a really rich, vibrant style - very moody and evocative.
-
This was definitely the best album in the thread for me so far. Lover's Grief is great.
-
I'm glad you guys are liking this album so much. It's one that's been in my collection for many years that I come back to about once a year and am blown away every time.

btw i listened to like half of last week's album and felt pretty much the same towards it as that arkona album, both seem to be cut from the same folk metal-y cloth that does nothing for me
i'm pretty sure i listened to every mare cognitum album by this point but i don't remember the first two being nearly as compelling as phobos or luminiferous so i'm interested to hear why you chose this one

I'll be writing down my thoughts on this later today. I posted this just before I went to bed last night, so was too tired to collect my thoughts. And now I must go to work...

Tardigrada was good. I still don't think I loved it, but it feels like you're inching closer towards finding something that's squarely within atmospheric black metal that I do love.
Well, that didn't take you long.
Assuming this week's album is still atmospheric black metal then you've finally found something in the genre that I find pretty fantastic. The production is much stronger than a lot of the genre - it's still kind of... spacey, but much more clear and punchy and engaging that a lot of what I've heard. And it's strong musically too - some of it isn't super interesting, but most of the tracks build to some really exciting stuff and a lot of it is really melodic too.

So, Cyril asked about why I chose this particular album from Mare Cognitum, when the more recent ones are better. He is right. However, I feel this is a good place to start with this band. It's a very strong album in it's own right, but as you go forward chronologically they get even better. I didn't want to throw the very best this band (really it's just one guy, Jacob Buczarski) has to offer and then have you all be disappointed with the rest of the output if you chose to explore this band further.
Going to the next Full-Length Mare Cognitum album, Phobos Monolith, the song writing feels much more focused and just tighter overall and, at least to me, is a huge step up. Then on his most recent Full-Length, Luminiferous Aether, I feel like he pretty much nails the balance between Atmosphere and Melody. Plus the buildups are much more epic.
Now, the most interesting things he has done, in my opinion, are the splits he has with Spectral Lore. There are two, Sol and then Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine. Wanderers being the best, again in my opinion. Wanderers is going to end up being my favorite album of 2020, most likely.
He has another split with a band called Aureole, but it's not quite as good as his other stuff. The guy behind Aureole, Markov Soroka, doesn't have the same song writing skills as Jacob Buczarski.
-
Just listened to the Mare Cognitum album.
Musically, it's really cool. Tons of great grooves, many almost gothic.
Those vocals though. I mean, they're dissonant enough where they don't hurt my ears, but, I don't know..

Try the Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine album. It's by far my favorite album that Mare Cognitum has worked on. And the fact that he is working with Spectral Lore is just icing on the cake. It is a long album, to be fair, but it sure doesn't feel long.
Also, apologies everyone, I didn't have time to update this thread last weekend. I will be updating it this Saturday, so you just get an extra week to listen to the Mare Cognitum album or catch up if you were behind.

So Mare is a guy, and not a band?

I checked into that album earlier this year after seeing the amazing album cover. i think it's cool, actually, but not likely something I'd listen to on my own.

So Mare is a guy, and not a band?
It's a one man project by a guy named Jakub Buczarski. Same with Spectral Lore, just another one man project.
-
I just listened to the Empyrium album... wow! It's awesome, right up my alley! I'm behind on this thread, I will listen to the next album in the next days.
Great recommendations so far :metal

i'd dig the hell out of that too tbh :lol even tho our post-hardcore tastes don't tend to align as much

Yeah, I've noticed that. Although we do have some crossover from time to time.

Hey look a new album in this thread.........finally.....
Week 10
(https://e.snmc.io/i/fullres/w/ce8a91f6bc6e9e484cbe8f0acfb58bb7/2631628)
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade (https://open.spotify.com/album/3IKH6M6Pd4Wb2aFxKGP6cl?si=e8smGTzHQzqNihiCQb-WXA) | Bandcamp (https://wolvesinthethroneroom.bandcamp.com/)
(Atmospheric Black Metal)
1. Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog
2. Ahrimanic Trance
3. Ex Cathedra
4. Crystal Ammunition
I actually think this album gets a bad rap from WitTR fans. The overwhelming majority think the previous album, Two Hunters, is better. And while it is another fantastic album, I enjoy this one much more. This definitely falls well into the Atmospheric Black Metal category, with hints of dark folk and post-rock. It is a dense album, without much variation, but that gives it a very trance-like quality to it. The music ebbs and flows and just kind of pulls you along with it. That isn't to say there aren't some good melodies and headbanging moments sprinkled throughout.
-
I had heard about this album many many years ago and always been meaning to listen to it. Thanks for the reminder! I had forgotten about it, I didn't it was on spotify.
BTW our profile pictures are really similar!
-
I've received a song from this band in my roulette. I did not like it.
Looking forward to the next week! In the meantime, let me spin Empyrium again.
-
Wow, I actually know this one.

I'm a little surprised that last album didn't get much traction. Oh well. This week's album goes in a slightly different direction.

7. Cumpăt
8. Dojană
Negură Bunget is one of my favorite Black Metal bands of all time, but after 2 of the main band members left in 2009, they just weren't the same anymore. They continued on until 2017 when the final founding member of the band died of a heart attack. The 2 members that left the band immediately formed this band and quickly put out an EP consisting of 2 songs that would later show up on this album. This album, though, is what I consider the true successor to Negură Bunget's Om, which was released in 2006. That was a 5* album and so is this, in my opinion. However, I think this album is slightly more accessible and the production is better, so it could be considered a better album than Om.
What truly makes this album stand out to me is the flawless weaving of Black Metal, Traditional Folk Music, and Progressive Metal. It's not afraid to go into softer quieter sections for decent lengths of time and that makes the heavier sections that much more potent and meaningful. There is also an underlying beauty to it all. Then there is their use of many different traditional folk instruments; like the Toacă, Hammered Dulcimer, Bucium, Kaval Flute, Wood Flute, and Pan Flute. They give the music true authenticity. To me it's the peak of what Black Metal should be with Folk influence.
-
I'm a little surprised that last album didn't get much traction. Oh well. This week's album goes in a slightly different direction.
I got through the first song, but haven't had a chance to get back to it. I figured I had another 4 weeks... :lol
I liked what I heard, and still plan on finishing it.

oh i totally completely forgot to listen to the last one
and i already know this one :lol it's good but i haven't revisited in a while, maybe i will
-
Catching up now.
Last week's Wolves in the Throne Room... I think it's another good but not great one for me. It has lots of elements I like but it doesn't seem to quite do any of them that well. The atmospheric side isn't especially rich or lush, the melodic side is nice but I don't find very emotive or engaging, and even the heavy side lacks a bit of punch. The production is clear, which I like, but it's a little thin which possibly impacts on those other things.
-
gave the wolves album a spin... it's aight, the sound is there but the songwriting feels a bit... bland and really lacking for melody. soundwise it's almost comparable to that first hope drone album but it's all a little too dry for me and i got bored like halfway through, just wasn't hitting right. ahwell
-
Well, 4 months is long enough. Time for the thread resurrection! More Black Metal to come! :djhef:
-
Cool thread. Big black metal fan over here.. To just say something about the stuff already posted: That Wolves in the Throne Room album had some good stuff on it, particularly the opening track Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, which is monumental (especially the ending). I found the second album Two Hunters a bit better though.
Myself, I am into all kinds of stuff but my favorites are probably:
- The early Norwegian stuff: Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Emperor, Enslaved, Satyricon
- Some French bands like early Mütiilation, early Peste Noire, Blut aus Nord
- Finnish mid 2000's scene: Behexen, Sargeist, Horna, Baptism
- The "orthodox" scene: Watain, Deathspell Omega, Armagedda, Funeral Mist, Teitanblood
- Some folk-stuff like Drudkh, Hate Forest, etc.
So yeah, quite invested in this type of music, but somewhat stuck in old 90's - 00's bands. Eager to see what comes up next here.

Nice to see a fellow Black Metal fan in here. I'm a huge fan of Emperor, Enslaved (just did a full discography runthrough over the weekend), Blut aus Nord, Deathspell Omega, and Drudkh, of the bands you listed. Other than that I tend to lean towards stuff that is more Progressive in nature (like Enslaved), or Atmospheric, or Folky (Drudkh, Moonsorrow, Agalloch).
I'm working on adding more stuff to this thread. So stay tuned.

1. Gin
2. Dry Body
3. Arsonry
4. Throat
5. Stomach
6. A Clean, Well-Lighted Place
7. Pregnant Insect
8. Two-Thumbed Fist
9. The Old Man Who Lied for His Entire Life
10. A Starved Horror
This is another of those bands that I heard about via recommendations from another forum, back in 2009 (which is when this album was released). This album goes and it goes hard! It's very progressive, with some incredible musicianship and tight song-writing. It gets heavy, but know how and when to change pace to keep things interesting and build tension. This album is also chock full of memorable and headbang worthy riffs. I'd say this is one of those albums (and bands, for that matter) that isn't afraid to think outside the box when it comes to Black Metal. It's definitely different, or at least it was when it came out initially. Since then there have definitely been copycats.
I'm fairly certain Cyril has already heard this album and likes it. Interested to see what the rest of you think.
-
Wow, this is a really interesting album. I'm only through Stomach. I'll finish it off tomorrow.
The title track is amazing!!!!
Dry Body was a bit plodding but quite interesting.
I didn't care for Arsonry.
And the instrumental part of Stomach is great!
-
Listening to it right now. The intro to Gin and some other riffs as well sound very Drudkh-like. The vocals seem a little out of place at first, and remind me of something like Eyehategod and Iron Monkey. But then again, this was supposedly Sludge influenced so it all makes sense. Riff-wise there is quite much going on here: sludge, modern thrash metal, and also those epic Drudkh inspired riffs. Actually it sounds pretty American somehow.
As I'm no big fan of Sludge metal in general, I think that influence is a little too prominent on this album for it to be my cup of tea.
It's Hemingway on the cover apparently. Is it a concept album about him?
-
of the three albums i got from them this was my least favorite and the least memorable, for sure :lol
i honestly barely remember this one but eater of birds and slow forever are pretty cool
-

Yeah, that sounds about right :lol
-
This one was pretty good. Definitely lots to like about it - nice punchy sound, some cool riffing and energy. The melodic approach (or lack of) isn't entirely my thing though, so I like it but I don't love it.
On another note, I'm just going back to some of the other stuff I liked from earlier in the thread, now that I've finally finished exploring all the stuff I wanted to from my roulette. Starting with Mare Cognitum and I'd forgotten how much I liked it. Definitely some of the best ABM I've heard. It has the hallmarks of the genre but the production works well - it's not too thin or noisy but still manages to get across that atmosphere, plus it has a rich musicality to it that's right up my alley. Working my way through his other albums now (not including collabs with other artists) and they seem great too.

i legit think puppies picked the most bizarre/probably wrong choice for mare cognitum idk i find that one way less interesting than the next two & the spectral lore split/behemoth

I should probably check out one of their actual albums one of these days.

I guess I kind of understand that logic in the sense that it worked for me, and I do think the next two albums they've done are slightly better still. Just fortunate that I liked that album enough to both checking out anymore, so it's a bit of a risky strategy and often it won't pay off.
Anyway just reporting back to say that for very different reasons I'm also really digging Arkona. Their first two albums don't seem very interesting, but everything they've done since is a great blend of folk metal and black-ish metal with a mix of epic, dark and at times kind of fun energy. Their latest album Khram is especially excellent, a huge sound and heavy melancholy music which is right up my alley.

If you ever wanted to listen to what the apocalypse might sound like, this is it. This is one of those albums that isn't going to be for everyone. I already know some of you are going to say it's way too long (Cyril), or there's not enough going on (Cyril), or it's too slow (Cyril) And some of you may just say, "WTF is this." (TAC)
At any rate, this album is a force to be reckoned with and should be more well known.

who the hell has time for a two-hour black metal album these days?
*shoves paysage d'hiver, the spectral lore/mare cognitum split, and two midnight odyssey albums just out of sight*

WTF is this??
These are some long ass songs. This sounds awful. It's like it was recorded in a basement 30 years ago and they just found some old shitty cassette of it.
I gave up smoking weed 20 years ago and there's no chance of me getting through this without being baked out of my gourd.

This sounds like 90% of all black metal!

I made it halfway through track 7 and then turned it off.

listened to the first disc today, i'll check out the other one later
i kinda get it but kinda don't? the ambient stuff is all cool and the second black metal track was pretty solid but the first one was hit-or-miss, a bit too sludgy & rooted in low-end tones mixwise
the second disk is like twenty years long with a 36 minute track so we'll see when i get to it but i need a break from this lol
-
listened to the second disc now and this remains sufficiently "alright". it's too long for me to want to listen to a second time tho
-
I would've skipped this one if it was a 20 minute EP. :lol
-
yeah well i am far more accustomed to this kind of lofi black metal than you, mr. folksy forest metal :neverusethis:

1. Arkanum
2. Stein auf Stein
3. Aargesang (Aare II)
4. Entelechie
5. Telôs
For this album I decided to go with something a little easier to digest, something shorter, more melodic. Perhaps TAC will like this one. This album is still very much rooted in my favorite flavor of Black Metal, atmospheric! However, it is also dripping with fantastic melodies. Great riffs, great tremolo picked leads/solos, memorable melodies. Yes, the vocals are still very much non-understandable and echoey, like most atmospheric styled Black Metal, but they really act more as another instrument adding to the music. I suppose the one downside to the album is it isn't super varied, but it's also not long enough for it to become monotonous. One of the better Black Metal releases of last year! Plus they have a new album coming at the end of the month!
-
Looks like this album didn't gain any traction :P
-
I gave a listen and I quite liked it, particularly the atmospheric side. But there was something about the sound that I found just a little grating and made it hard for me to really get into it properly.
EDIT: By the way I continue to really get into Mare Cognitum and Arkona, both really fantastic bands.

When you think of Black metal, typically you think of raw aggression or cold dissonant atmosphere or tremolo picking. What if you were to take all of that and add in a ton of beautiful clean melody and give it all a squeaky clean and slick production? You get this! And at only 33 minutes the album is short enough to not be a burden on people who are under time constraints. Enjoy...
-
This is a nice album. I don't know why but they reminded me of Nirvana. :lol
I few of the songs seemed to have a similar tempo, but I thought the music was dreamy enough to be quite enjoyable. The vocals didn't bother me.
-
literally everything about this sounds like the opposite of what i want in black metal so i'mma pass :rollin

That was an interesting album, I liked it. I will definitely be listening to this a little more.
How do you find all these albums? I like to listen to new music but generally I don't have the patience to listen to full albums of bands I don't know by my own.
I'm really enjoying this thread!

Glad you are enjoying the thread :metal
The majority of the bands I've shared so far are bands I've been listening to for many years now, some for about 15 years at this point. Bands like Lunar Aurora, Arkona, Empyrium, Wolves in the Throne Room, Cobalt, and Elysian Blaze have all been part of my music library for 10-15 years now. Back around 2006-2010 I went through a phase of discovering and listening to as much music as I could. I learned about many new bands and genres of music around that time and a lot of them have stuck with me and become all time favorites. I sort of went through a drought of finding new music after that. It wasn't until I made an account here on DTF in 2017 that I really started to dive into music discovery again, but I'm glad I did and I love sharing what I've found over the years with as many people as possible.
I know I've joked with Cyril about turning this thread into a Post-Hardcore album of the week, but I may start a thread for that at some point. Black Metal and Post-Hardcore are the two genres I seem to connect with the most these days. I mean, I still go back to a lot of my old favorites (e.g. no band will ever supplant Rush as my favorite band of all time), but when it comes to new music, that is what I tend to gravitate towards.
-
same @ listening to mostly post-hardcore and black metal lately :lol literally most of the albums i have on my desk right now are one of the two (a few drone albums on there too atm)

Atmospheric Black Metal
1. Torn Beyond Reason
2. Darker Days
3. An Unbroken Moment
4. The Inevitable End
5. November
6. Somehow...
I first heard this band when their album Towards the Depths came out in 2008. That album leaned way more towards Depressive Black Metal than I normally like, but had a lot of the Atmospheric qualities that I would eventually come to favor in Black Metal. This album, Torn Beyond Reason, basically flipped the script from their previous work, by turning the atmospheric dial up to 11. They kept some of the depressive aspects, mostly in the lyrical content being more melancholic, and then added some Blackgaze elements as well as touches of Post-Rock. The album stays varied by adding in spacey and moody passages filled with atmosphere and utilizing a lot of cool riffs to keep each song interesting. This gives the album a very open and epic feeling. The last two tracks showcase this extremely well and make for a fantastic climax to a great album. Enjoy.
-
aaaand i've already heard/meh'd this one :lol ahh well
-
This was actually pretty decent. My ears were starting to glaze over by the end of The Inevitable End. Everything started to mesh together, but November and Somehow were great closers.

Indeed they are great closers. Which was why I pointed that out in my writeup so people would stick around to the end of the album. Besides it isn't an overly long album anyways. Glad you liked it for the most part. :metal

2. Life Only Festers
3. Veins Hollowed
4. Stillborn // Isolate
This is one of those Atmospheric Black Metal albums that fell through the cracks a little bit a few years ago. There are 2 things about this album that really make it stand out to me. 1) The absolute perfect production for an AtmoBlack album! It's not too clean and polished and it's not too much like a wet blanket covering your speakers. 2) The vocals of Daniel here are, in my opinion, phenomenal. Some might say it sounds like he's trying too hard, but I think he is bringing the right amount of tortured intensity to the table. It also helps that they have Jacob Buczarski on drums as well as collaborating on songwriting. And then there's Olmo Lipani, whom I have no idea how he finds the time for all the amazing projects he does (Maladie, Slow, Sorta Magora, his solo stuff, etc.), who brings more great songwriting to the table. You can almost call this an Atmospheric Black Metal supergroup. Anyway, this album is a great ride of Darkspace and Akhlys influenced Black Metal.

I have no idea how you find the time to know WTF all these projects are.

(Atmospheric Black Metal)
Tracklist
1. The Void Overtakes
2. The Void Overcomes
Since you can't ever have enough spacey atmospheric black metal. I'm coming back with a band that has a lot of similarities to Darkspace. Do you like your black metal cold and dense, with trance-like repetitive riffing? Do you like a massive wall of sound that pummels you, but still feels as cavernous and infinite as the cosmos? Then this is the album for you. If you like Darkspace then there is a lot to love here. This might even be a little less fatiguing and more easily digested than Darkspace, with a little bit more melody to boot. Along with vocals that are even more buried in the mix to provide just another instrument contributing to the wall of sound. Amazing!
This album isn't available on Spotify, but it is available on their Bandcamp page for free (name your own price).

this sounds incredibly my jam so i will gladly bookmark it and then forget to listen to it for a month

Dropped the needle on this. Why on earth would anyone sit and listen to this?
I mean, it might be ok for background music.

I should start putting in my posts who should give the albums a skip. I think I know everyone's preference regarding black metal at this point. At least all the regular posters in this thread. :corn

Well, that'd be me and Cyril. :lol
You could post a Cyril album, and then you could post a TAC album. :lol

There's a few others that would pop in here semi regularly, but yeah...
I also thought about posting 2 albums each week from different ends of the black metal spectrum. Perhaps next week (or year ;) )

this did remind me to listen to this one, at least
it's definitely in part because i'm a bit black metal'ed out atm but this isn't doing a ton of me. i mean for one it's pure darkspace worship and while i like that sound it's not one of my favorites, it's a bit too lo-fi for me and i do like at least some established melody and momentum in my black metal, and it's also very short compared to darkspace and paysage and stuff like that too. like yeah it's pretty good i guess but i don't think i'm gonna be returning to it

That's fair. I do think Darkspace is the premier band in this style of Black Metal, but I found this to be quite good still.
