It is an abomination that we have not had a thread about them yet. ITT appreciate the mind blowing, gut busting, face smashing awesomeness that is Gojira. GOGOGOGO
-
Eh, they're alright.
-
I love them but all their songs are way too similar (at least on their last albums).
-
I haven't heard much of them but I would have to agree that some of their songs can start to sound similar. Still, their worth listening to. From Mars to Sirius is a fine album.
-
If I was going to see Metallica a month earlier, I would have seen these guys, but now I am seeing Volbeat(WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)
-
Fucking AMAZING. All their albums are fantastic, with The Way Of All Flesh being my favorite. Vacuity is arguably one of my all time favorite songs, nothing beats pumping that song on full blast in your car on the freeway at midnight with the bass booster on full. :metal :metal

When you wake up to Vacuity, there is no problem. :millahhhh
-
great band and great people. their an awesome live band as well.
-
Gojira in my opinion, is the new Metallica. I think these guys are the new premier metal band and people will be heavily influenced by them/ ripping them off for the next twenty-five years just like bands have been influenced by/ripping off Metallica and Slayer this past twenty-five years. Gojira will be the torch carriers for Kings Of Heavy Metal when Metallica throws in the towel (which I hope is not any time soon)
-
This is the song that got me into them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axe8HGLV4Vw
(Esp the ending at 3:20 :metal :metal :metal)
-
Yeah great tune. I should also mention Mario Duplantier; One of my biggest/ newest influences. He's really fucking tight live. He's incredible.
He's the drummer, by the way lol
-
Only have From Mars To Serius, but it's a great album.
-
Fucking awesome band. They're my most played metal band nowadays. Every album has something good. Terra Incognita is brutal. :metal
-
Incredible band...and even more incredible live
-
I LOVE Gojira. My favorite story to tell about them is I once "bribed" their manager. I baked them cookies so I could get backstage. :lol (Hey, at least I didn't have sex with any of them!)
-

You didn't have sex with any of them? Why didn't you? I know I would have.

This. Seriously, you missed a golden opportunity here.
-
Did baking cookies actually work, though?
-
Awesome band. I love From Mars to Sirius and The Way of All Flesh is almost equally good. I really want to see them live.
They are one of the best ways to get my adrenaline rushing.
-
Did baking cookies actually work, though?
I got into the show for free and got to hang out backstage...sure it worked. :lol

Didn't think you'd dig Vacuity, or Gojira for that matter; and it is amazing.
I like them a lot. I probably like The Link the most, just because of a few songs, other than that I think it's a pretty meh album.

I don't know, I just remember you saying that you generally dislike DM, aside from a few select bands, didn't think Gojira would fall in that "like" category.
-

I can't get that song out of my head. Love that end section. It's like the outro to Deliverence got a sawn off shotgun and started punching children. :metal
-

DM? What exactly is that?

Death Metal?

Death Metal?
I was thinking that too, but I can't remember when I said that I generally don't like death metal. Sure, I think the genre has many bands that sound alike and it gets old quick for me, but I never outright said I disliked the genre.
-
Pretty sure it was on aim. I remember trying to talk to you about a band and you size you either didn't like them or the genre. It's probably nothing :P
-
Oh now I remember. It was Meshuggah. You were worshipping them and I said I can't listen to them for more than 30 minutes cuz they're too goddamn repetitive. We then debated over how you think repetitiveness is amazing and how I don't like it. Now that I think about it, Gojira is pretty repetitive but when you've got riffs like Vacuity, The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe, and Toxic Garbage Island, how can repetiveness be a bad thing? :metal
-
Gojira's riffs are so awesome, they don't feel repetitive at all. Also, they can change it up really well.
Meshuggah, on the other hand...
-
@zeltar, oh yeah, I think I was digging them so much because despite that they are extrmely repetitive, which I generally dislike, I enjoyed every song. Same thing as your gojira point
I still like meshuggah just as much though. I just dont become annoying like I used to be :P
-
Gojira's riffs are so awesome, they don't feel repetitive at all. Also, they can change it up really well.
Meshuggah, on the other hand...
Blasphemy!!
-
When the riffs are as good as Meshuggah's, I could hear them for hours on end and not get bored... :hat
-
So anyone seen them live?
I just saw they were touring here this friday, and was wondering if I should go.
-
I have not, but by all accounts they're absolutely awesome. I'd definitely go if I ever got the chance.
-
Neither of I but a fiend of mine that saw them open for someone (Behemoth, I think) said they were awesome.
-
So anyone seen them live?
I just saw they were touring here this friday, and was wondering if I should go.
I have seen them live...they're immense...DEFINITELY GO and see them!
-
So anyone seen them live?
I did a couple of days ago, they suck beyond recognition.
-

wat
-
They sucked, the music sucked, the vocals sucked, all their songs sound the same.
-

Son....
I am disappoint. :'(
-
...
I seriously have no idea what to say.
-
I dunno why you guys are so surprised, I guess if you guys think they're good then it must be me, growling vocals distorts any good aspect of the music for me.
-
So anyone seen them live?

GO. If you like their studio music even in the least bit, you will love them live. Their music translates over to a live setting extremely well, to the point that it sounds better live than the actual albums.
-

Yeah, ignore metty, he doesnae even like the band...if you do like them you'll have a great time
-
Yeah you've definately gotta see them live. I first discovered them because I was blown away by them at a festival, and I've now seen them 4 times and they've owned me at each show. I've never seen a band who are tighter live. Their drummer is one of the best metal drummers of all time, and you'll almost certainly get a cool drum solo. So yeah, go
-
Well, I just took a flyer on their "The Way of All Flesh" album today. I went to get three CD's, they didn't have have two of them, and this single Gojira CD was practically staring at me...and I remembered seeing a thread here, and it being ranked pretty high on a music opinion site I frequent (sorry DTF, I'm promiscuous), so without ever hearing a note (or even knowing what kind of music they make), I picked it up. I'll let you know what I think in a day or two.
-
Hope you enjoy it! :tup
-
Two listens in and I can see the appeal of Gojira, particularly musically. Lyrically...I didn't make out much, but I was playing it through my laptop speakers the first time, and playing a very intense game of backgammon the second time. I knew that CD was calling out to me today at the store :metal
-
whoa the studio albums sound as bad as their live show did.
-
whoa the studio albums sound as bad as their live show did.
Is there really any point commenting in this thread if you don't like them...
-
whoa the studio albums sound as bad as their live show did.
Kill yourself
-

Seriously man nobody cares what you think.
-
whoa I just saw this, kick ass replies fellas, high school is awesome! heh
It's not like I said "Fuck this band and all their fans", I actually saw them live and that's why I was commenting here.
I loved the "seriously man" bit there Benny, really made it sound like we've been arguing for days and you're finally setting things straight lol
Well fellas I see no reason whatsoever why my opinion should affect your love for that band's music, I see no reason why you're so angry and I certinly don't catch when I offended you but I'm not commenting on that band anymore if that will make you happy :)
You guys are so cute hehe
-

I'm not angry. You're entitled to your opinion.
You should still kill yourself.
-
Is the flamebaiting really necessary metty? I don't understand why people have to come in threads just to shit on bands they don't like; it's really childish.
-
I agree, but I really didn't come here to do that just for the fun of it, I really was commenting on something I saw!
I said I'm through with it, fuckin chill guys.
-
Bumping this thread because I just got Terra Incognita last night. This is my first album from these guys, and I have to say I'm rather pleased with this album.
Also, Lizard Skin is pure :2metal:
-
In the Forest is even more :2metal:
-
So after several listens, I really do like this album. Which album should I hunt down next? Any suggestions?
-
I'd say get The Way of All Flesh. If you like their first album, you will love this one.
-
I'd say get The Way of All Flesh. If you like their first album, you will love this one.
I agree. I have three Gojira albums, and I would rank them:
1) The Way of All Flesh
2) From Mars to Sirius
3) Terra Incognita
I need to get their other studio album, but if you like Terra Incognita, I can't imagine you not liking the other two albums I have.
-
I'd say get The Way of All Flesh. If you like their first album, you will love this one.
Definitely either this or From Mars to Sirius.
-
Alright, The Way of All Flesh it is then.
Also, Satan Is a Lawyer, cool song or coolest song?
EDIT: Damn, I find myself enjoying Terra Incognita more and more with each listen.
-
EDIT: Damn, I find myself enjoying Terra Incognita more and more with each listen.
Good to see some love for this album, it seems to get forgotten about. To be honest you can't go wrong with any of their catalogue, but when you get around to The Link make sure to pick up The Link Alive DVD too. It's got an amazing performance of pretty much all the songs from the first 2 albums. The version of Blow Me Away You(niverse) is the grooviest thing in the world
-
The Art Of Dying has such an incredible intro that I cut it out with audacity and put it on repeat :metal :metal
-
Bamp!
I recently picked up The Link, which only leaves From Mars To Sirius.
I have to say, so far I'm still liking Terra Incognita the best. I think it may be the vocals. On Terra, his vocal style seems much more concentrated on the deep, gutteral death growls (Lizard Skin for example) while throwing in a few other styles. While The Link and The Way of All Flesh has the gutteral vocals, Duplantier tends to focus more on a harsh sounding vocal style. Not quite death growls, but not quite singing. And it's not bad, but I much prefer the death growls over these type of vocals.
-
HOW HAVE YOU NOT GOTTEN FROM MARS TO SIRIUS YET
-
The past couple of times I went out to buy CD's, the stores I've gone to only carried The Link, The Link Alive and The Way of All Flesh.
-
lat...
I am disappoint.
-
One of these days, I'll get myself a copy.
-
I just remember, I'm going to Bloodstock and they're playing. That makes me rather happy! :2metal:
-
leaves From Mars To Sirius.

You are in for a treat. :tup

LAT IF YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN FROM MARS TO SIRIUS YET I WILL SKULLFUCK YOU

I WAS AT A LOCAL RECORD STORE THIS AFTERNOON AND THEY HAD EVERY ALBUM OTHER THAN FROM MARS TO SIRIUS.
IS LUBE AN OPTION?

Now get to it Lat, or I will be getting some sloppy seconds.
-
I don't have $16 to spend at the moment. Gas/concert money is all I've got right now.
-
Sell some guy a blowjob for $20. For From Mars to Sirus it's worth it.

If I was going to see Metallica a month earlier, I would have seen these guys, but now I am seeing Volbeat(WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)
Isn't there a Pokemon named Volbeat? From third generation, the "twin" to Illumise.

I just recently got into these guys.
And I found out they're playing in.. the venue where I work as a bartender. That's pretty awesome, and it's practically in my backyard. I sure as hell know I'm not going to work that night, but I'll be there as a headbanging visitor.
-
They're awesome live so you'll enjoy that

Calling in sick and then going to the show where you work. :lol
-
Saw these guys live when they opened for In Flames, was it 2 years ago?
Pretty great, and very interesting seeing as their music is something completely else compared to the other bands performing that night, In Flames included.
-
Just got back from Gojira!
I wasn't that excited since I'm not familiar with their albums except The Way of All Flesh.
Turned out they were tight as hell, and basically blew the roof off the place for the entire gig. That's also what bothers me about them, in the end not offering enough variation. That said, great freakin' gig, people were going nuts and they're just totally together in their playing and show, there's definately charisma in their brand of metal.
-
NECRO'D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, it just clicked how awesome From Mars to Sirius is. The riffs make me want to kill something which is interesting because they are only one step down from standard tuning and Gojira is like 5 or 6 and these riffs are just better. So, Ocean Planet, Backbone, Where Dragons Dwell, The Heaviest Matter of the Univese. All sick songs. I need to listen to this a few more times to get into the rest but where to go after this. I need to get shit on in at least one post per thread, so here it goes:
I can't listen to Terria Ingonita because the vox are buried to deep in the mix, so that is out but I was wondering if I should listen to The Link or The Way of All Flesh or one of the EPs?
-
Even though I hate you so much for not giving Terra Incognita enough of a chance, I still have to suggest you fucking get The Link. It has Death of Me, which is my all time favourite Gojira song. The Way of All Flesh, if you ask me, is just pretty good. I found it to be a bit weaker of an album.
-

Yah get The Link BUT be aware that there are 2 versions. There's the original which has a very muddy mix and if you don't like TI then you probably won't like this either, but there's also the re-released version which has a much cleaner sound. Get that one.
-
The Way of All Flesh is absolutely fantastic.
-
I found out recently that Terra Incognita might be the heaviest thing ever.
-
In case anyone hasn't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BvVpbfbXsw
-
Vacuity played on full blast with 12 inch subs=the shit :metal
-
I found out recently that Terra Incognita might be the heaviest thing ever.
Lizard Skin! I think that song might be the heaviest thing I've ever heard
-
Lizard Skin is tied for my favourite Gojira song with Death of Me. Dem riffs :2metal:
-
Love creeps the hell out of me for some reason.
-
Because I have to listen to Christmas music all day at work, I've decided that lunch time Gojira time. I need all the metal I can get.
-
I found out recently that Terra Incognita might be the heaviest thing ever.

Blow Me Away You(Niverse) is my favorite. THAT RIFF :2metal:
-
I swear I remember there being an announcement earlier this year that said they were working on an EP. What the shit happened to that?
-
This is all wikipedia says on it:
Gojira have currently entered the studio to record their latest 4-song EP dedicated to Sea Shepherd. According to Joe Duplantier, the EP will feature guest appearances from the international metal scene.
-
Yeah there's photos from the sessions on their Facebook page. should be out soon :caffeine:
-
So, I have listened to The Way of All Flesh and I think it is a kickass album. It is badass but, as of right now, not as badass as From Mars to Sirius. I love the album's usage of clean(sorta) vocals and like From Mars to Sirius, you have some serious riffage. The one song I can't seem to get into like everyone else seems to is Toxic Garbage Island. After about a combined 2 listens, I think The Art of Dying is the best song on the album.
-
DUGA-DUGA-DUGA-DUGA-DUG WEEEIIRGH DUG DUG DUG
-
The one song I can't seem to get into like everyone else seems to is Toxic Garbage Island.
You might want to check your ears.

Yeah, that song is pretty awesome, though I didn't care for it much at first either.

Got From Mars to Sirius today! :metal
-

:metal :metal
-
First listen off the CD. Great fucking album. I still need to get into In The Wilderness and Global Warming, but other than that, I love every song. Even the instrumental which is so not me! :D
-
Gojira is pretty high on my list of bands I really need to see live. I can only imagine how amazing they are.
-

This x1000.
Also Cole hurry up and get The Link. Srsly.
-
I "have" it. They are one of the 3 artists I am checking out at the moment. That album will come eventually. I have 4 by one band, 6 by another, and I am on The Way of All Flesh by Gojira now. So, they will get their shot before the month is out.
Gojira is pretty high on my list of bands I really need to see live. I can only imagine how amazing they are.
Same. They are on my list of 4 shows I will most likely be attending alone if they actually tour this year.
-
The Link should be your first priority. But whatever.
-
Satan Is A Lawyer = :lol
What a wacky, heavy song.
-
:metal :metal :metal
That's my second favourite from Terra Incognita. So heavy sound.
-
A Sight to Behold!
:metal :2metal: :letam:
-
A Sight to Behold!
:metal :2metal: :letam:
Maybe my favorite Gojira song! :metal
-
It is no where near my favorite but it is probably my favorite off The Way of All Flesh. It is probably because From Mars to Sirius has had more time to digest but most of the songs on there, are better than all the songs on The Way of All Flesh. That will change with time though.
-
So what's the best album to start with? I have all of them downloaded from the Zune Pass so I can listen to any of it, dunno where I should start.
edit: Listening to The Link first...
-
I'd say From Mars to Sirius or The Way of All Flesh :tup
-
From Mars to Sirius is the heaviest album known to man.
-
From Mars to Sirius is the heaviest album known to man.
No.
but it's pretty good.
-
From Mars to Sirius is the heaviest album known to man.
No.
But it is pretty fuckin' amazing.
-
I have come to a conclusion...
From Mars to Sirius>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The Way of All Flesh
After listening to FMtS and giving the TWoAF my first good listen. Like sitting down and really listening, this album is a disappointment compared to the awesomeness that is From Mars to Sirius. The Link is next.
-
The Way of All Flesh is just okay in general. I mean, it's not a bad album by any means. But if you ask me, it's the most average Gojira could ever sound. And that's saying a lot, because there are a shit ton of strong moments on the album.
I still think The Link is their strongest album, but that's just me. LISTEN TO IT NOW GOD DAMN IT COLE.
-
I will, I will.
And talking about The Way of All Flesh, the only song, to me, that matches up with the awesomeness that is From Mars to Sirius is A Sight to Behold. That is a sick song.
-
Another day, another reason to hate Cole.
-
Vacuity, mother fucker. VACUITY.
-
Vacuity is ok. It is pretty heavy and is one of the better songs on the album. I'm just talking about matching up to FMtS.
-
Dude...
Toxic Garbage Island
A Sight to Behold
All the Tears
Adoration for None
The Art of Dying
Vacuity
All on par with most of FMTS.
-
Yeah, so was I. Vacuity is a top 5 Gojira song for me.
OH GOD ITS TIME FOR SOME TOP 10s MOTHER FUCKERS
1. Death of Me
2. Lizard Skin
3. Satan is a Lawyer
4. Vacuity
5. Heaviest Matter in the Universe
6. Blow Me Away You(niverse)
7. Flying Whales
8. The Link
9. Dawn
10. Remembrance
Dude...
Toxic Garbage Island
A Sight to Behold
The Art of Dying
Vacuity
All on par with most of FMTS.
I agree with these 4.
-
Dude...
Toxic Garbage Island

Adoration for None
The Art of Dying

Nay. A Sight to Behold is awesome. Adoration is cool and it has Randy Blythe on vocals. The Art of Dying is heavy but as a whole song does not really offer much, and I told you how I feel about Vacuity...
Yeah...you hate me...I fail...failfailfail, I should just go shoot myself because I just fail that much.
I get it. :P ;)
-
Yeah...you hate me...I fail...failfailfail, I should just go shoot myself because I just fail that much.
Well...by all means.
Actually, don't. Because that would make me partially responsible and put under question. That wouldn't be fun on my end.
-
I am just post whoring to say that I actually got this computer program to understand Gojira.
-
Even though it was ages ago since I listened to them, I still remember that they completely slayed live. :hat
-
Death of Me! :metal
-
Is Gojira's best song. I know.
-
I really am quite fond of the song Lizard Skin
-
Which is, in fact, their second best song.
-
Man I still haven't got The Link! D:
-
You. Need. It.
-
You know what else we need? The Sea Shepard EP. It was supposed to be released in the third quarter last year, and still no sign of it!
On a related note, when I see Gojira at Sonisphere it will be the 5th time I've seen them :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
-
The Art of Dying is Gojira's best song. I know.
Yes. Yes it is.
-
I really am quite fond of the song Lizard Skin
I hope you've seen The Link Alive DVD. The performance of that song is something else.
Oh hell I'll just post it anyway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEqBqnufMcE
I feel that the intro to that song is the heaviest section they've ever done, with the pinnacle of heaviness being the roll over the toms with the double bass underneath.
-
Flying Whales is very obviously their best song.
-
Flying Whales is very obviously their best song.
-
Where Dragons Dwell is very obviously their best song.
I totally agree with both of you!
-

Yeah, that's what got me into the song. It's just kind of addicting. The bass is providing a nice groove and Mario is an amazing drummer

You know what else we need? The Sea Shepard EP. It was supposed to be released in the third quarter last year, and still no sign of it!
On a related note, when I see Gojira at Sonisphere it will be the 5th time I've seen them :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
1. Yeah seriously. Where the fuck is news about the EP or you know...anything regarding Gojira.
2. I am so fucking jealous of you oh my fucking god.

Flying Whales is very obviously their best song.
Yep. :tup

Been listening to the new song all day. It's so good and to be honest, I think it's their best song.

It's fucking awesome, but it's not THAT fucking awesome. Death of Me still shits all over it.

Not exactly. He said that whilst he will never rule out a SYL return, he would not be able to perform those songs in his current state of mind, i.e. at peace with himself. Were he to (god forbid) relapse into the paranoid and self-loathing mentality of those early years it is perfectly possible that SYL would re-emerge. Hopefully it will never happen though.

BUMP FOR NEWS:
A lot happened since our last message so we wanted to give you some news today and let you know we are still alive! We know you are all eagerly awaiting the Sea Sheperd EP release. We are sorry for the delay. Some of the material was on a hard drive that crashed but we are nearing the end of a long and difficult recovery process. Now the Good news: the new Album is ready! All the music and lyrics are waiting to be recorded. Joe is already in NY to check out the Studio and make sure everything is sorted so we can begin to record next month. A new website is being built and we are working on ways to improve the communication between the band and our fans. You guys fucking rule! Thanks!

Cool news! :tup

And? It's the first bit of real news from the band in practically years. It's fucking something.
-
Bump because The Way of All Flesh finally clicked this past week. I mean, I've always liked a good half of the album but it never really hit me as much as their other three albums did. Jesus god damn what an album. So yeah, been listening to Gojira pretty much nonstop recently.
Also I stumbled across this monster (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJhkhmgZXRk&fb_source=message) this morning. Seen live videos from this show before, but it's awesome to have it all in one sitting. So god damn heavy.
-
The Way Of All Flesh is my favorite. What a phenomenal album. Not only are all the songs awesome, but the production is great as well. One of the best sounding metal albums ever.

Dear god, you people are slacking.

Personally, I'm kind of hate when bands do albums with titles in different languages. Looks like I'll just be referring it as "the new Gojira album" until the end of time. :P

I know what you mean. It doesn't bother me with a band like Sigur Rós (where pretty much everything is in icelandic) but one thing I seriously don't like is when a band mixes english titles with another language. I don't know, in some cases I feel like the album looses the connection, feels more spread out if it's different languages mixed.
Still, that was pretty off topic but I'm pretty excited about the new album. I've sorta been a casual fan of the band since I saw them live, and I'll check out the new album.

It doesn't really bug me considering they're French and all.
-
wtf is wrong with you guys? the title is awesome. also i can't wait!
-
Go back to France, you Kraut
-
wtf is wrong with you guys? the title is awesome. also i can't wait!
This too lol.
-
The french titles doesn't bother me really, it's the fact that it has BOTH english and french titles. I really don't get why they can't stick with one language for an album, not just Gojira but everyone who does this. :P Still, excited about the album.
-
well the only french title is the title-track and i doubt it's going to be a french song. i don't really see the issue there.
-
Who fuckin' cares. I am so god damn pumped for this new album.

-
I've been hearing that it's just the cover for the single, which I really hope so, as I don't like it one bit
-
Don't like that cover as much as the previous one, but still excited about the album. :metal
-
Pretty sure it's for the album. Also I think it's awesome.
-
I don't like how it seems like clip art pasted over some kid from highschool's 'Computer Design' project :L
-
These guys really need to stop flashing the fact that they are all about the environment. :lol I have no problems with that as a theme in songs, but the leaves in the middle of the album are just.. there.
-
They should totally get John Baizley to handle artwork, he's a frickin art genius.
-
I think it works. All of their art are kinda like that: Natural, organic, and symbolic. Also if the album is about environment, why not put it there?
-
Because it looks like it was just slapped on, with The Way Of All Flesh, and From Mars to Sirius, the artwork was well place, and well made.
-
well then let's just agree to disagree ;D ;D
-
I think it works. All of their art are kinda like that: Natural, organic, and symbolic. Also if the album is about environment, why not put it there?
Well, aren't all of their songs about it? :P You catch my drift. They've had that theme for a while and it has been pretty clear, I don't think they need it on every cover, but it doesn't bother me. Just thought it was a bit funny.
-
Well my point is if they keep talking about it, the album needs to express that.
-
It's alright. I've been a casual fan of the band for a while (been enjoying them, but not loving them to death) so maybe the new album will change that.
-
I think it's a pretty fantastic cover. I don't really care if it took 5 minutes or 5 days to make a cover, as long as it fits the music. Based on Gojira's sound (unless this album is going to be a major change) it looks like it'll work for me.
-
Saying Gojira is only all about the environment is well...incorrect. The messages in their music range more along the lines of human spirituality, existence and how that relates to the natural world around us.
-
The cover art is fine.
-
It's okay. Kinda boring though.
-
I really like that cover, nice and simple.
-
I like the cover too.

I really like how simple the artwork is. They don't need a lot to get the point across. Some bands just work best that way. Then again I've only heard one song from them. And after hearing the heaviest matter of the universe, I like them. Where should I start in their discography?
-
I'd say their latest album! ;)
-

I agree, The Way of All Flesh is a good way to start, it's a great album.

Their latest (The Way Of All Flesh) is their best, IMO.
From Mars To Sirius would also be a good place to start. Heaviest Matter... is off that album.
-
From Mars to Sirus is pretty widely regarded as their best album.
-
The Way of All Flesh is my favorite.
-
Those two and The Link are all good enough I can understand anyone holding any of them as their favorite. I'm just telling the new fan what would probably be his best bet.
-
Yeah, From Mars to Sirius is what got me.
-
Terra Incognita is the album that got me into Gojira. It's a unique as fuck album. Then again, so are the other three. Fuck it, just listen to Gojira.
-
Listening to Gojira to me is like listening to music. There's actual sound going into my ears.

I'm having my first listen through of From Mars to Sirius. Gojira definitely has a very distinct sound, which sets them apart from most heavy metal bands. Its almost like... part industrial, very aggressive, but also groovy. Very interesting combination; I would definitely like to see them live

That new song made my balls quake in fear. :2metal:
-
Finally cleaning out my backpack. found a paper I did on them in French class earlier this year...best project ever. Made me crave the Way of All Flesh....Jesus christ I wish I could be this perfect.
-
Funny enough, I used Gojira for a french project as well. We had to do a project on french culture and one of the spots was "french artists". Convinced my teacher to let me use Gojira, and when we set up our project in the gym with everyone elses, I brought in some speakers and blasted Gojira on shuffle throughout the period. Man, senior year was pretty awesome.
-
That new song is amazing :D

Oh and today is the release day of The Flesh Alive. Hoping to get it myself at some point.
-
Man, this new song is very good. I've been listening to Gojira once in a while at work, and I think I'm finally starting to really like them. Maybe this new album will be their Koloss, for me (I love Koloss, and it made me appreciate the other Meshuggah albums even more).
-
...So has anyone listened to the new album?
-
I have.
It's not hitting me as hard as TWoAF did, but I've only listened three times so far, so it very well could be a grower.
That said, Explosia and Liquid Fire are my favorites right now. Great tunes and Explosia is an excellent way to open the album.
-
I'm actually pretty underwhelmed by the new album. There doesn't seem to be much consistent "heaviness" here. Like, each track has it's outright brutal and pretty sweet moments, but it kind of tapers off very quickly every time. Also the slides. They were really fucking cool on From Mars to Sirius. On this...they feel over done.
It was only a matter of time for these guys to slip up. Four badass albums is a long run. Though this album isn't bad by any means, I'm just not super impressed by it (I hyped myself up quite a bit to be fair).
-
I don't think it's a bad album by any means. With a three album run like that, expectations were set pretty high.
-
Yeah it's pretty cool but it's just kinda there. It's like it's missing passion or something...
-
Listening to it now, it really sounds like these guys are out of ideas. I mean a lot of the riffs sound almost recycled from The Way Of All Flesh, and the overall sound really hasn't changed at all. I'm sure I'll find some good songs on in though, Explosia and The Gift Of Guilt sounded pretty awesome.
Well, this is only my second Gojira album, I'll definitely check the other ones out soon.
-
I'm going to have to disagree with you guys, this hit me immediately and has been keeping my neck sore and ears ringing.
-
I've grown to like it more. Explosia, the title track, Liquid Fire, The Gift of Guilt, and Born In Winter are all awesome. Also I take back what I said about the sound not changing at all, since the record is much slower and less heavy than their other works.
That said, it's not an album I'd listen to in full. There's no real flow and it's got many boring parts overall.
-
Pretty awesome album imo.
It sounds more mature, I really like it.
-
It's growing on me a lot... Still need time to see how I like it but it's more and more.
-
I'm with Dark Castle...I've enjoyed the album from the first listen. Like NicNumber said, it sounds more mature.
-
I saw this band in their first ever show in the U.S. back in 2006. They opened for Children of Bodom. I didn't know who they were and wasn't sure what to make of them since I was there to see Bodom. It seems like they've done quite well for themselves since that time. I listened to From Mars to Sirius, and I thought it was at least interesting. I will keep checking out their other music.
-
I think the album is pretty good, but it hasn't really hit me that hard. Pretty solid though.
-
I loved the album on first listen, but if anything it's gotten less interesting to me over time. That said, I still like it a lot. Saw them play a couple weeks ago too, and they still absolutely slay live
-
It's funny seeing this band opening for Children of Bodom and not knowing who they were, and now they have received high praise and have a relatively large following for one of the younger metal bands. It's pleasantly surprising.
-
I am so fucking mad that I probably won't get to see these guys in a couple of weeks. It just so happens to be the day that I'll be driving 2 hours out to my university for orientation. Fuckin'.
-
Joe has done guest vocals for the new Car Bomb track Third Revelation. This is good because:
a) It will give some exposure to Car Bomb, a largely unknown band who I absolutely adore
b) I've been waiting for new Car Bomb material for over 5 years
It's absolutely heavy as hell, although I feel it doesn't do the band justice. Every song on their last album Centralia is better IMO, but still glad to see them making new stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZzskgUA9Vw
-
That was actually pretty cool. I didn't think I would like it but it's weird enough for me.
-
it's weird enough for me.
Then you gotta check out their album. Third Revelation is a pretty straight song for Car Bomb. I won't link anything because it's against the rules but listen to any of the tracks from Centralia on YouTube or Grooveshark or wherever and you'll hear that they get a hell of a lot weirder. I know Gojira are big fans, aside from this collab they've toured together at least twice and Gojira were also in Car Bomb vocalist Michael Dafferner's documentary 'Why You Do This.' about the difficulties of making a living as an extreme metal band. He uploaded it to YT if anyone's interested.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJSp-yRMrsY
-
I saw Car Bomb open for Gojira this recent tour and thought they were... pretty terrible honestly but that's the only exposure I've ever gotten to them.
Anyways, I've finally got around to listening to all five Gojira albums! Awesome band. :)
Album rankings:
1: The Way Of All Flesh
2: From Mars To Sirius
3: Terra Incognita
4: L'Enfant Sauvage
5: The Link
-
The Link is 4 spots too low.
-
Only songs I really enjoy on it are the title track, Death Of Me, and Remembrance. The rest are meh.
-
Been listening to this awesome band for a few months now. I even had the opportunity to see them live on a one-day-festival in Croatia where they shared the bill with Mastodon and Slayer. Very powerful on stage, humble guys. After the show they jumped from stage and did a "shakehands tour" with the front audience.
So, this weekend Joe will be on Full Metal Jackie and announce some tour news. Hopefully they'll visit South Europe once more soon :metal
Regarding albums, my favorite one is The way of all flesh, although I also really like the latest one and their only released track from Sea Shepherd EP (Of blood and salt). You should give it a listen :tup

Yes, I wasn't a Gojira fan until that day, then I started warming to them and now can't await their next show :heart :hefdaddy

L'Enfant Sauvage
It took me some time to really appreciate this album or the band for that matter but man what an album. Actually to be honest it was the "The Lost Episode" of the Metal Evolution series that trigged my interest.
-
L'Enfant Sauvage is my 2nd least favorite album by them, but man...
Explosia is easily the best song they've ever done. Hands down.
-
Yea I haven't really explored their disco so until i've heard all their albums I will determine how this album stands against the rest but so far i'm enjoying this album alot.
-
Definitely get The Way Of All Flesh if you haven't yet. That's their best one.
From Mars To Sirius and Terra Incognita are also awesome.
-
I'm just now revisiting The Way of All Flesh since a long time, and man.. this is so awesome, I forgot how perfect The Art of Dying was, still my favorite Gojira song by miles. L'Enfant Sauvage is still alright, but it wouldn't come close to FMtS and TWoAF, though The Gift of Guilt is also one of my favorite songs.
-
Listenable Records just posted preorders for splatter vinyl of The Link, FMTS and TWOAF, each limited to 500.
Goddammit.
-
Teaser for new album:

Saw this on reddit. They sure are mixing it up by the teasers I've heard so far, looks like they're aiming on expanding their sound a bit more and I like it.
-
Oh man that sounds pretty stellar! Definitely can't wait to hear the new release! :tup
-
Very excited to see they are changing up their sound. Looking forward to what this could bring!

Song's not bad but not great either honestly.
Since this is just the first single part of me hopes the rest of the album is a little more 'out there' because this sounded a bit generic to me.
Oh and I really dig the art
-
Album art is creepy. Reminds me of Teletubbies :lol (and they're creepy :|)
Song is typical whalecore.
-
That guitar riff is wierd and awesome. The song was more Alt Metal than I was expecting, but I really liked it.
-
Listened to the song on Spotify with headphones, you hear the riff a bit clearer. Sounds pretty cool, diffrent but i'm intrigued.
-
The new song is sick, can't wait for this album to be released. Hope I get the chance to see them live soon.
-
Just over 3 weeks later now, how's everyone liking the new song at this point?

Oh and I really dig the art
I like it way more now than my past-self, song's got some pretty hooking grooves and the clean chant-ish section is awesome.
-
It's probably in my top 5 and I've stopped listening to Gojira since then, anticipating the new album.
-
Pretty cool and I never liked Gojira before.
-
Video for Silvera: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVvXB-Vwnco (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVvXB-Vwnco)
Fantastic track, I think I like it even better than Stranded.
-
Wow this one's great! Love the chorus. I liked Stranded too but this one gor me hooked from the first listen, awesome tune.
-
Groovy track! Pretty straight forward but I like it.
-
I was expecting this to blow me away with heaviness, but instead I got another super catchy song with something that you can almost call a guitar solo. Not bad, I dig it. But I hope the album will be heavy also because I think they're the best band that does HEAVY in the world.
-
I liked this more than the first one.
-
Really digging the new music/vid.
-
Um so, spoilers ahead, I've heard the album once now.
Probably the biggest letdown of the year for me so far. I mean, a big part of this was probably caused by the ridiculous amount of hype they created with all those teasers, not a smart move if you ask me. This got me expecting something big, but it's about as standard of an album as it could get for Gojira. Some killer songs on it though, Pray being the definite standout. But the worst part is, without exaggerating, the title-track is likely one of the very worst songs I've heard all year by any band. It sounds like it's made just to annoy listeners. That's pretty hurtful for a band I consider one of my top 20 or something bands.
Definitely worth a listen though, maybe it's just not for me because it's almost like psychedelic rock in some ways. I can dig some psychedelic rock but it's a bit weird coming from Gojira. I love these guys but this was a pretty big miss for me.
-
But the worst part is, without exaggerating, the title-track is likely one of the very worst songs I've heard all year by any band. It sounds like it's made just to annoy listeners.
Considering this is the band that marred an otherwise perfect album with "A Sight to Behold," I'm unsurprised.
-
Those synths on A Sight To Behold, or whatever they are, are definitely on the same level of annoyance as the stuff (pretty sure it's a guitar) I'm talking about on Magma, yeah. :lol I can't even take it seriously.
-
Wait, A Sight To Behold is considered bad? :lol
-
A lot of people (including me) have been averse to the first two minutes, for me the music doesn't match Duplantiers vocals at all, but from 2 minutes onward it's a fantastic song to be honest. So I'd say it's a middle-of-the-pack from TFOAF for me, which is my favorite album, could've been top 3 if it wasn't for the first 2 minutes though.

Oh ok, that's cool. I think it's pretty good.
-
A Sight to Behold is one of my favorite Gojira song. So much groove.
-
I've been meaning to check Gojira for some time now, and I really liked the Stranded single. Which album do you recommend I check out for starters?
-

I'd say From Mars to Sirius since it got me into their music. The Way Of All Flesh is sick as well, and I wouldn't recommend you to start with L'enfant Sauvage (it took me some time to appreciate it fully).
-
Yeah, From Mars to Sirius is probably the best one to start with. Or, like Tomislav said, The Way of All Flesh.
-
The Way of All Flesh was my first Gojira album, and it worked. The intro to Oroborus was enough to pique my interest right away. After getting more and more into the album, something bothered me. It was all perfect and tight, but in the end a bit too sterile. That's when I checked out From Mars to Sirius, and it was exactly what I needed.
-
Before I get the album I decided to listen to Flying Whales and I have to say... wow. Something tells me I will really like this band.
-
III CAAAAN'T BEELIIIEEEVEE MY EEEEYEES, BUT IT'S TR0000!!!
-
Flying Whales is probably their best song. Art of Dying is really good too.
-
Time to do this I guess
1. The Art of Dying
2. Flying Whales
3. Ocean Planet
4. The Gift of Guilt
5. Born In Winter
6. Oroborus
Top 5 was a bit too hard, Oroborus and Born In Winter are really close. Honorable mentions to Toxic Garbage Island, TWOAF, Explosia and The Axe.
-
I might do it later. Does anyone else get eargasm on transition between drum stick solo and whole band kicking in in The Art of Dying? That part is :hefdaddy :metal
-
Gojira just posted another new track 'The Shooting Star' on their FB page.
-
Great song, again, this album will probably replace L'Enfant Sauvage as my favourite.
-
I thought the new song was really boring. Didn't even finish it.
-
After only one listen so far, I'd say Low Lands is the stand out track.
-
Got the first full listen in today, very impressed with the new record!
Too earlier to draw conclusions, but I think it's definitely better than L'Enfant Sauvage and the pre-FMTS records. Standout tracks for me were the two singles (Silvera and Stranded) and The Cell. The second half of the album is a little less 'catchy', so to speak, but I think it could definitely be a grower.
-
The new album is awesome, can't stop listening to it on spotify. I like the mellow mood of it all, kinda laid back approach to the tracks.
-
Solid album. The songs of 'classic construction' are just as great as L'enfant and the new side is fine by me (though I think "Only Pain" should have just been squished into "Stranded;" no need for the octave pedal riff in more than one song). However, their trend for wasted time on interludes is continuing, which I'm not into... "Yellow Stone" would better serve in an actual song. At least it's not "Unicorn."
(Obviously, "From Mars" is exempt!)
-
I think Unicorn is pretty nice.
-
To be honest, the octave pedal riffs made me consider buying one. I hadn't heard a decent octave pedal riff since Pantera's 'Suicide Note Pt. II'.
-
I haven't listened to Gojira in... what, 3-4 years? But after I saw in this thread that a new album had come out, I gave it a listen today. Holy shit, it is good. I think it's time for me to rediscover this band.
-
Haven't got around to checking this new album yet as I've never been a huge, huge fan of Gojira. I find them a little overrated and find their albums to be really repetitive at times. I do like their heaviness but really have to be in the mood to listen to them and don't really have any songs that stand out as favourites that I'd listen to on their own. That being said I do actually like the band.
Anyway, I've heard mixed things about Magma. I know they've mixed it up a bit and cut back on the relentless heaviness on this record. I understand why some would feel let down if they were wanting trademark Gojira shit and were left feeling like the change wasn't a good one. As I mentioned, I get a bit bored with the constant heavy so I get the feeling I might like this new album more.
I've heard bits of tracks and it all sounds good. Do any of you guys have a similar opinion to me on Gojira? If so, did you prefer the new direction?
For the people who didn't like it so much, was it because of the lack of heavy or were the songs just not that good?
-
I was very negative about it in this thread after my first listen but it's growing on me and is now in my top 15-20 albums of the year so far. :tup
The reasons I didn't like it at first had nothing to do with heaviness. I guess I wasn't really into the Ghost-like tendencies (talking about the band Ghost) in the more mellow moments of the album. Usually I love their more melancholic side, Born In Winter is one of my favorite Gojira songs ever, but it's a whole different approach here.
I hear the repetitive complaint all the time and I could kind of see where they're coming from, but the overall uniqueness of the sound makes up for that I feel, especially with From Mars To Sirius where it just sounds like they've cracked some golden formula and can just easily get away with using it over and over without boring the listeners (well, the ones that do like it at least :P).
I'll give them this: this is a very unique album by Gojira standards and this is the first one that does not only sound dark and somber, the events that happened during the writing and recording process enhances that and makes it probably one of the darkest records I've listened to in a long while. :hefdaddy
-
I just don't think the songs are very good. They're fine, but not more.
-
As the second Gojira album I've listened to, I like it way more than From Mars To Sirius to be honest.
-
I've never heard any other Gojira before. But I quite enjoyed the one listen-through I had of this latest album. Great brutal, crushing riffs. Lots of Whammy riffs. Riffs, riffs, riffs come get your riffs.
-
They released a music video for Low Lands, and I thought it was pretty cool. My favorite track on the album.
-
I think Pray is my favourite, but Low Lands is a good second favourite. Awesome album.
-
I think Magma may be my favourite Gojira album out of all the albums I have heard (the only album I haven't heard is L'Enfant Sauvage and I really don't know why). It's exactly the direction I would prefer the band take. I've been playing it quite a lot this week, should it continue to grow on me in this way it will easily make my top 10 of 2016.
As I'd mentioned in the 'What Album are you Listening to' thread, part of reason I am enjoying this so much more, I think, is because I can concentrate and focus on the lyrics so much more than on previous albums. I've always liked the environmentally/socially aware lyrics and feel I'm actually able to take it all in more than on previous albums. I also don't find it as relentless and repetitive as previous albums.
Really good stuff. Don't think I've ever actually seen them live so would be good to check them out if they tour the UK any time soon :metal
-
I'm sort of the opposite. I think Gojira's lyrics feel kind of pretentious at times (again, at times, not always), so I try not to focus on the lyrics so much when it comes to this band.
-
Show was amazing.
We showed them how we roll. And they loved it. Got a used drumstick. And got it signed by the band. Pics to come when I wake up.
Tesseract kicked ass as well.
-

Gojira just announced the support acts for the upcoming tour.
Code Orange (don't know these guys) and fucking Car Bomb! this show will be amazing. Car Bomb just released a wicked album last year and I bet they make for great live performances with their chaos.
-
Is that on the UK leg of the tour as well? (I should probably just look it up :lol)
I'm pretty sure you've played a Car Bomb song whilst I've been in the plug.dj room. Was that the band that you said had similar style music to Meshuggah but in a style you actually liked?
-
Yeah, I played the opener from their new album. They're like Meshuggah/Dillinger/Gojira, but mostly the first two. Like a mathcore Meshuggah.
It does get a bit tiring after listening to them for a while but it sounds like a cool concert experience. Also, not sure about the UK leg, I've only seen this announcement in the event thread of the show I'm attending.

Holy Shit, just listening to Gojira(Magma) at work on low volume. I looked them up as they will support Opeth in May in Nashville, TN. I like how heavy they are. :metal

I think Magma is actually their least heavy albums :lol you'll love The Way of All Flesh :2metal: and From Mars to Sirius... and L'enfant Sauvage...
To ask others: do you like The Link and Terra Incognita? I can't remember the last time I was listening to any of them but The Link is to me equally good as everything they did later. Yes, it is different, but still pretty dope.
-
Magma is a pretty cool record for the band, it's definitely a little bit different. It sacrifices some of the aggression in favor of more atmospheric and song-oriented leanings. I can dig that. That said, their heavy stuff is just too damn good and has enough atmosphere already. It's like they're digging deeper in search of something that's been there all along. I hope the next record is going to be ultra heavy.
Tomislav, on rare occasions I give Terra and Link a spin, and they're cool but I really feel the band found their sound with Mars.
-
Tbh Magma is the only Gojira album that holds my attention from start to finish. Their heavy albums are incredibly samey and all use the same kind of riffs / tricks. I usually can't tell when one song starts and one song ends unless it has a really distinctive section like Flying Whales.
-
flying whales is genuinely great but the rest of the album does little to nothing for me. uhh. global warming was kind of solid but i'm already tired of it after listening to it three times in total, it's repetitive as heck lol. i may check out their latest but i'm doubting i'll be getting into these guys 'cause the focus on heaviness really never does it for me

Yea, I'm basically the same. I do find most of their albums repetitive, but not Magma. I like their heavy sound, and I need to go see them live, but listening through a whole album can be a chore sometimes. It's the same for me with Meshuggah as well.
-
Pretty cool fan animated music video for L'Enfant Sauvage:

I saw these guys opening for Opeth in Nashville Tennessee. The sound was perfect in War Memorial Auditorium and the crowd went bonkers when they played Flying Whales. The bass player was insane! I enjoyed Gojira more than Opeth. Partly because the sound was better and Opeth played nothing from Blackwater Park and Still Life.

Gojira - Live At Bloodstock Open Air 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8RAH2ZTJBA)
Great stuff!!
-
I’m wayyy late to the Gojira party.
I’ve heard about these guys for a long time but never bothered checking them out. A friend showed me Magma recently and I got immediately hooked. I ordered that one and From Mars To Sirius and I’ve been listening to both of them constantly. Been checking out their other stuff on YouTube, and I’m most likely gonna order The Way Of All Flesh and L’Enfant Sauvage by the end of the week. And I definitely plan on seeing them live next time they come to town. So cheers to these guys!
-
:metal For me L’Enfant Sauvage is where it's at. :)
-
There's a vid on YouTube of them playing "Territory" by Sepultura and the guy filming (or standing next to the guy filming) is losing his junk. He was so excited for them to play "Territory" that it seemed to make his year. It was cool to hear someone so happy at a concert.
BTW - they did an excellent job covering the song.
As far as their music, I want to like them but I can't really go "all in" on them for some reason. Someone help me out. If you had a top 5 songs to recommend, what would your picks be?
-

Explosia
Satan Is A Lawyer (one of their weirdest songs, but also one of their best)
The Art Of Dying
Toxic Garbage Island
Backbone

My recommendations really depend on what you particularly like or currently dislike about their sound, but as far as top 5 songs, I think:
1. The Art of Dying
2. Vacuity
3. Born In Winter
4. The Link
5. Pray
It's reaaaally hard though (except #1 duh, The Art of Dying is one of the best songs ever), I could easily extend this list to 15 and still love all songs almost equally. Born In Winter isn't very heavy but explores their darker and more depressing sound the best out of any of their songs in my opinion, Pray and Art of Dying have very interesting structures to me and both build up intensity very well, and The Link and Vacuity both just have some of my favourite riffs overall, The Link being more raw heaviness and Vacuity a bit more 'refined'.
As for albums, they will probably never top The Way of All Flesh for me, that's gotta be one of my favourite metal albums. From Mars to Sirius is good but has some inconsistency issues in my opinion, Magma is more consistent even though the highs aren't as high. L'Enfant Sauvage to me sounds like their safest album but it's still good, and The Link is super heavy and you hear that the band was still kind of finding their place in the metal world, but it is right up there with the albums that rank under The Way of All Flesh for me. Not very familiar with the debut, I seriously need to fix that.
P.S. Also check out the song they did with Devin Townsend :hefdaddy believe it's called Of Blood and Salt

Been spinning Flesh and L’Enfant over the past few days. Out of the ones I own, I think L’Enfant is my favorite so far. It feels the most cohesive, and the songwriting is fantastic.

Excellent quality, both audio and video! I just wish they had included Toxic Garbage Island or The Art of Dying in the setlist...
-
I watched a bit last night, it's one of the best live concerts I've seen in awhile and it's totally free, which is amazing. Amazing picture and audio, sick performance and a large wild crowd :metal This should be sold on blu ray. I'd buy it even with it being free on youtube still.
-
I wish they’d play The Gift of Guilt more on a regular basis. Probably my favorite song from them. But I still wanna check out the show!
-
There's just something about this band that whips a crowd into a fucking frenzy. Joe's vocals are a bit rough in spots throughout the show, but I can overlook it. They just kill it live.

I was gonna see that tour as well, but at the time I didn’t listen to Gojira, and I had just seen Opeth a few months prior and didn’t want to see the same set all over again. I regret not going now haha

We are very excited to announce that we’ll be touring North America this summer with our friends the Deftones. They are one of the coolest bands out there and we’ve been dreaming about touring with them for decades. Poppy will join the party as well!
Tickets on sale Friday, February 14th at 1:00 PM
Will definately buy a ticket.
-
Will probably go to this, even though I'm a bit bummed it's an arena tour. I like Deftones and I haven't seen them live yet, so this seems like a good excuse to change that.
Poppy supporting is very unexpected :lol I imagine a lot of people will be weirded the fuck out by her, but her new album was pretty good so I'm glad she'll be there too.
-
It's not an arena for me, outdoor GA venue near the beach. Actually I HATE that venue, probably won't go to this as I've never been a Deftones fan. But I'm planning on seeing Gojira in May opening for Volbeat so I'll get my fix there and maybe skip this one... and just checked this is the same night as the Foreigner, Kansas and Europe show about 30 minutes from the venue this show is at. I'll be at the classic rock show, since I already have a ticket to that.

Same here, the venue they’re doing in Chicago is like a mini amphitheater on a peninsula on Lake Michigan. Kinda cool actually.

They're playing the Pavilion in Irving here. Presumably they'll take the seats out for this one. It's too bad they're opening for Deftones. I'd rather get a headline show.
-
It looked like it might be a co-headlining tour?
-
Got a floor ticket... for almost $100. Fucking christ. Not way in hell I would have paid that much if this wasn't Gojira.
-
Holy crap...the service fee is about the same price as the Lawn ticket. At least they have a Pit thats way cheaper than the reserved seating, basically you're paying to be able to sit down and have a cup holder.
-
Tickets for the show at the Greek theater in LA for the worst seats is $35.00 face value and when you add up the "fees," it comes out to $58.00...... Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of Deftones or Gojira that I'm willing to pay that price for a worst seat ticket. I'll wait to see if Groupon can list this show for tickets under $30.00 for the worst seats. Then I'll go.
-
OOC to compare, the GA outdoor venue for me is $75 after fees unless you want to spend more for early entry. Oof. I haven't bought my ticket for Volbeat/Gojira in PA yet, but I know its $65 after fees for a floor GA ticket, even less if you want a seat in the small arena setting. Makes me want to confirm that floor seat given the prices, that's a much better experience than my local venue and cheaper. Oh, and I like Volbeat more than Deftones. But I get it, Deftones are fairly popular in the US.
-
New Gojira song is pretty good IMO.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iqrMFNMgVS0
-
It's alright. Very similar sounding to Oroborus but definitely not as good.
Is this just a one-off single? I feel like these guys have been teasing a new album for a while now but it doesn't seem like one's coming out this year (probably a smart move, this year is cursed :lol)
-
I always figured that if somebody were going to invent warp drive it would be Gojira.
Sounds like a Gojira song. I'm cool with that.
-
I heard rumors of a new album, not sure how true that is.

-
Great new track. When I saw Gojira play in knotfest last year they mentioned they were working on a new album.
-
I think I read it's a one off single, but maybe that's because they are holding back on the album? I don't know, but I enjoy it even if it's a fairly basic Gojira song, it's still pretty damn good. :metal
-
That is some nice artwork and art-style, very colorful. Great video and nice nod to Planet of The Apes.
Makes me think he had the concept already for both the song and video, and intertwined them. The song compliments the video and vice versa.
-
The Lost in Vegas guys love Gojira to death and they did a reaction video to the new song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCB7jElTb3U
In it they mention when they met the band they were planning to release the new album around Sept of this year, though that may have changed a bit.
-
It's alright. Very similar sounding to Oroborus but definitely not as good.
I know, right? The moment the opening riff came in I thought about Oroborus. I guess the guitar in the verse is comparable too but that's more usual. And I agree, hard to beat Oroborus, it's one of my favourite Gojira tunes :)
Adding: Lost in Vegas hear it too, we're not imagining riffs
-
I love the section at 2:05 with the drums and guitar effect or whatever it is.
It's a simple form but I dig the song, it has a clear message.
-
It appears the band is teasing the new album and posted the track listing

Nice. Hoping this isn't like Magma where the singles ended up being the best songs on the album, especially since Another World is kinda meh for their standards.

Good stuff.
Pretty cool video too.
-
This new single has me pretty pumped. I really liked Magma and it's my favourite album of theirs, but this new song seems like a slight return to their older sound. I love that!
The drumming is pretty great! Already listened 3 times in the last 24 hours!
-
I have never listened to a single Gojira song, but I like Haken and Leprous and DT and Opeth, should I give their albums a listen? If so, which one should I start with?
-

You should. I think at times they could sound very...monotonous but overall I like them a lot. Here are my suggestions:
From Mars to Sirius (Top songs: Global Warming, Flying Whales, Heaviest Matter of the Universe)
The way of all flesh (Top Songs: Art of Dying, Esoteric Surgery, Oroborus)
L'enfant Sauvage (Top songs: L'enfant Sauvage, Liquid Fire, The gift of Guilt)

From Mars to Sirius won me over big time back in the day.

I'm not sure how similar Gojira is to those bands, but I only have Magma and really enjoy it. It may be easier to start with if you aren't into the harsh vocals because it's toned back on that album. I've heard a bunch of their older songs, I probably should get the other albums. They are one really strong live band though, there's a power in their music that other bands aren't able to capture.

I have never listened to a single Gojira song, but I like Haken and Leprous and DT and Opeth, should I give their albums a listen? If so, which one should I start with?
I'm not sure how similar Gojira is to those bands, but I only have Magma and really enjoy it. It may be easier to start with if you aren't into the harsh vocals because it's toned back on that album. You should get them all.... there's not that many and they are all good.
Live, yeah..... I started to listen to them in 2005 but did not get to see them live until 2017 or so. Seen them twice now and wow.... fantastic shows both of them.
-

I am a big fan of Haken, DT and Leprous. I am warming to Gojira starting with Magma.
The new singles and the singles from the Magma album are a great start (Stranded and Silvera). Silvera is possibly the heaviest riff I have ever heard.
-
Well the new single certainly sounds like Gojira. So I'm excited.
-
Thanks for all those suggestions! It sounds like they've gotten a little "softer" over the years, so maybe I'll start with Magma and work my way back. It's also only 45 minutes long, so maybe it's not so overwhelming ;)
Looking forward to exploring this band!
-
New video for the song Amazonia. I like the tribal sounds this has (or however you'd call those sounds). I'm pretty excited to hear the full album!

Album coming out on Friday :metal
I only listened to Another world and Born for one thing, ready for the rest :metal not sure why they released so many singles (5) before the album.
-
Yea, I stopped and didn't listen to the last two songs that came out. What I heard, I really liked so I'm very excited for the full album :metal :metal
-
Listened to In The Storm once, haven't listened to the new one, can wait until Friday :corn
-
I've only listen 3/4 singles, but I really love Born for One Thing. That song alone has me really anticipating this album. Bring it on!
-
Haven't listened to anything, really waiting for the CD to drop in my mailbox.
-
Love Gojira and am looking forward to giving it a full listen, but i've heard all of the singles at this point and haven't enjoyed any as much as Another World. Hope I enjoy the rest of the album more and those tracks grow on me over time
-
I got it today, and it's great, but I can already hear review channels on Youtube shitting on it for being too melodic. It's even more melodic than "Magma", actually. For some reason, there are people who don't believe melodic and heavy can coexist.

I feel sorry for those people
-
If they don't like it because it's melodic, fine, but if they don't like it because they think melodic can't be heavy, well I disagree. Personally I need melody in my music, so this seems like something I'll enjoy.

Yes, that's generally what they believe, melodic can't be heavy, which I think is absurd. There are definitely some surprising melodic moments on this new album, especially the song "The Trails". I can't really think of anything else they've done that's quite like it.

Love it!
My first impressions of Fortitude are really strong. You know when you go into an album feeling confident that you are just going to dig it. This is where I am at and after one listen, I think this delivers!

I saw that this morning, really good article too.
Just one listen so far and I'm really digging it. I find this band so much more interesting now they have a more melodic edge. L'enfant sauvage was good, but I didn't love it, and what I've heard from before that just doesn't really do it for me. But Magma was great and I could even see Fortitude being my favourite potentially.
-
Just listened to the album. On first run through it, I like it. Enjoyable tracks throughout, very similar vibe to Magma.
-
I also listened to it once right now and I also quite enjoyed it! It defintely feels like a continuation of Magma while also bringing some elements from their older albums back. I won't say that Fortitude and The Chant are my favorites, but they are the ones that stood out to me just because they have a different feel to what the band has made before.

Well said, I agree with all of this.
I started to worry just a bit after Into the Storm got released.. that chorus is easily the band's most blatant attempt at sing-along dramatics and there's also a few transitions that just don't seem to gel together all that well.
But I've listened to the album 4-5 times now and I absolutely love it and Into the Storm is growing on me as well. Another great album by probably the best metal band on the planet right now.
-
I really dig Gojira musically, but this is an example of where the vocals just prevent me from really getting into them.
-
Alright second run, like it a lot, a little bit of everything that makes them who they are.
Really like The Chant, probably my favorite from the album. But man I wish they would have worked on that solo a little more :)
-
One full listen and I enjoyed it. Definitely feels similar to magma. The drumming really gets me, so damn good and interesting.
-
I have a few more listens and I still like it a lot. I'm actually surprised by how time goes by when listening to it in full. Every time Grind comes up I'm like I feel like I heard Born for One Thing just ten minutes ago :lol
I started to worry just a bit after Into the Storm got released.. that chorus is easily the band's most blatant attempt at sing-along dramatics
Oddly enough I feel like it might be the weakest chorus on the album. I feel like the three other singles, Hold On and Sphinx have much more memorable and sing-along choruses that I actually want to sing along to. Hell give me the Oh melody in The Chant over Into the Storm chorus :lol
-
The first half of the album is some of the band's strongest material in a while, but things take a nosedive for me with The Chant and everything after that point just feels kinda there. Unfortunately I think the biggest thing this record has in common with Magma is that the first few singles ended up being the best songs on the album by a pretty considerable margin.
-
After 4 or 5 listens the favorite for me so far is Hold On. Killer track!
-
It's not one of their absolute best, but I think this is definitely their best record since The Way Of All Flesh. Less filler than L'Enfant Sauvage and more consistent than Magma.
-

I'm planning on going to the Asbury Park NJ show 8/28 assuming it happens.

I dig the Deftones a lot, but I'd much rather see a headlining show. Possible the Albany show winds up a trip I was already mulling over. Venue looks like an abandoned Tru-Value Hardware store. :lol

I'd rather a headline show as well, I'm not really into the Deftones but that Albany show is about the closest for a headline show for me, and honestly, Albany kind of sucks. The only time I've ever been kicked out of a bar :lol
-
Really like the album, but I must say that Fortitude/The Chant is really not my thing. Not because it's melodic, it's just so damn repetitive, I'm bored before the real song even begins. Other than that, I've got no complaints. Amazonia or Grind may be my favorite tracks so far.
-
Enjoying this album so much!
The vibes, the sound in general, the riffing, the guitar solos (which are few) and even the album cover, all take me in one direction: MASTODON :) Is it just me?
-

Yep. I pretty much feel the same way. I think if there could have been something more to this song to break up the monotony, it could have been really good.
-
I feel completely different about The Chant.
I like the simplicity and repetitive chorus. It could have benefitted from cutting down a few repetitions towards the end, but I still think it works (generally speaking). The verses sound almost the same as The Shooting Star, which is a song I like as well, so maybe it's just the similarities attracting me to it.
-
Fortitude (the song) is like a modern day, tribal Planet Caravan.
Standout tracks so far are Born for One Thing, Hold On and Into the Storm! Not sure if this will be my #1 album of the year, but I know I can't stop spinning it!

Fortitude #1 on Billboard, absolutely amazing :yarr :yarr

Fortitude an easy favourite of theirs for me. Did not start to notice them until L'Enfant Sauvage, Magma increased my fandom tenfold and now Fortitude has knocked it out of the park. I'm not one for the death metal stuff TBH. Tremendous songwriting and Mario and Jean-Michel, wow. Hold On, Another World, The Chant, Into the Storm, The Trails, and Grind are killer and on a constant loop. The only 2 songs that haven't quite clicked are New Found & Sphinx. The others are great. Definitely an album I can hit the repeat button on and enjoy for a while to come. So thrilled to see them kicking ass on the charts, they deserve it. Hope to see them live for the first time in the near future. I don't just wish there were more bands like them, I wish there were more people like them too. Joe Duplantier is on another level.

Couldn't agree more ! Well said :tup

Sphinx is a bit generic for their standards but New Found is great. I love that outro.

Haven't gotten into this band at all from whatever I have heard in the past, but the Grammy thread got me listening to Amazonia, and I dig it. Stumbled on their live set from Bloodstock after Magma was released, and that was actually pretty good too. They remind me of kind of a mid-tempo Testament, which is a really cool sound. Overall, from listening to the new album and that live set, I like their sound a lot. Biggest sticking point for me is the lyrical content, which from what I looked up is so laughably bad that I guess I'll have to put them in the same category as Epica: A band where I LOVE their sound, but just pretend the lyrics don't exist.
As for the Grammy's, I am imagining the committee discussion went something like this: "Okay, metal category...let's see what we've got... Hey, this Gojira song sounds pretty good. It's heavy, and groovy, and...wait a minute! What the--?? Wait! Is that...is that guy playing a Telecaster? This IS the metal category, right? OK, screw that, we can't give an award in metal to a band that plays a Tele. That's just all kinds of wrong! Who else we got? Rob Zombie? Eh...I think he'll kind of freak out all the middle-aged moms. Who else? Dream Theater...hey, didn't they have that Pull Me Under song awhile ago? Yeah, let's give it to them. I'm sure they've done some cool stuff since then."

I find Gojira's lyrics to be one of the things I love most about them! They are singing about environmentalism and anti-capitalism! It makes them really unique and I can connect with their lyrics more than the generic lyrics most metal bands churn out!
Everyone has their opinions and all but this one truly baffles me. Can you give some examples of the lyrics you find ridiculous?

Same. I find them unique for metal genre. Global Warming has some of my favorite lyrics ever.

I could give examples, but in more broad terms, the bolded in your post nailed it already. Although as to the first one, I would slightly modify that to "environmental activism," which is more where their lyrics seem to lean, and also sometimes with a touch of spiritualism tied to that environmental activism, which just takes it over the top. To me, "environmentalism" means being a good steward of the environment, which I feel we ALL have an obligation to do in varying degrees. Environmental activism takes it to an absurd extreme that I can never get behind, and often entails a set of beliefs that are destructive and stupid.
-
They also commonly write spiritual lyrics as well. Particularly spiritual healing, like Esoteric Surgery

While I respect your opinion...
The lyrics are just getting people to understand the consequences that happened to the planets environment and ecosystem because of the decisions humans have made.
Although this thread might not be the place, I wouldn't mind a PM, but can you give me examples of what you mean by absurd extreme environmental activism? and what set of beliefs you consider destructive and stupid?
Because I will say, a lot of the comforts of life humans crave is destructive for the entire environment of the planet. And based on the album "From Mars, to Sirius" some "Primitive" cultures that are considered "Third World" are holding that obligation of being good stewards of the environment. That album is based off the knowledge and perceptions of the Dogon people in Africa.
https://anomalien.com/the-dogon-people-primitive-tribe-with-knowledge-of-the-universe/
According to Dogon folklore, the star Sirius (one of our closest celestial neighbors at only 8.6 light years away) actually has a companion star that is not visible to the naked eye. Their traditions claim that this mysterious invisible companion star completes an elliptical orbit around Sirius every 50 years.
This information has been an integral component of their religious beliefs for thousands of years, and yet scientific research did not confirm its validity until the mid-1800s when Western astronomers began to notice irregularities in the movement of Sirius.
This prompted further research and eventually, a theory was formed that Sirius was being influenced by the movements of a second star. This theory was finally confirmed in 1862 when astronomers finally detected a faint companion star, which eventually came to be known as “Sirius B”....
This staggering insight into astronomical phenomena was first recorded by Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen, two French anthropologists that first made contact with the Dogon in 1931 and continued to intensely study their culture for the next three decades.
The astronomical knowledge of the Dogon tribe was considered to be so advanced and so precise that a significant amount of controversy began to arise regarding its origins. According to Dogon legend, their ancestors received this knowledge from the Nommos, a race of extraterrestrial beings that visited the Earth thousands of years ago.
Dogon myths describe the Nommos as being amphibious, fish-like humanoids that arrived on Earth in a rotating “ark” accompanied by fire and thunder. The Nommos supposedly established a large water reservoir on the Earth and then inhabited the water.
In other words, that album is about a person taking an astral journey to Sirius where the flying whales show him the future of a possible outcome if humans do not change their behavior on how they treat the Earth.
It's the reason I consider Global Warming there best song.
And a reason why Amazonia hits more for me, as those people down there are like the brothers and sisters of my people, as we have oral stories about our migrations from those places down in South America. And those natives down there who are trying their best to hold their obligation of being good stewards of the Earth, are being forced out by their own government and forced to fight for that obligation to continue to be good stewards of the Earth. All because humans desire the comforts that are produced by the destruction of the Amazon, and the same is said for the other comforts humans desire that destroy the environment of the Earth.
In other words, that Environmental Activism is not entirely based off of a set of stupid beliefs. I find the term, "stupid beliefs" regarding being active on caring about the environment a bit offensive, honestly.
-
Maybe I'm not reading deep enough but even when Gojira are the most upfront and ham-fisted about their environmental messages (the song A Sight To Behold, for example), the lyrics are mostly just conveying anger and frustration about the situation, and never really advocate for any specific action or response from the audience, "destructive" or otherwise.
-

Wow, thanks for this. You've articulated things better than I could and all that stuff about Dogon folklore is fascinating. I'm definitely going to read up on that. I agree that one of Gojira's main themes in their lyrics is that our westernised style of life is killing the planet. I couldn't agree more, and although I take advantage of a lot of what modern day civilisation offers, my wife and I have contemplated a style of life that is more 'off grid' and minimalistic (less consuming of pointless crap).
Buddyhunter1, I kinda see what you're saying, but I don't expect a band to necessarily advocate for a specific action, I think it is OK to just try to open the eyes of their listeners and get them to think about how their way of living effects our planet.
In Silvera they sing "Time to open your eyes to this genocide. When you clear your mind, you see it all. You'rereceiving the gold of a better life. When you change yourself, you change the world". My personal interpretation of lyrics like these are that people in westernised society are reaping the rewards, and living a comfortable life off the slave labour that facilitates that lifestyle. Gojira want their listeners to open their eyes to this, and make a change to the way we live. If we consume less we can make a change to where are planet is headed.
It's like with punk and it's political themes. There are of course punk bands who do advocate for change but there are plenty of bands I grew up listening to that opened my eyes to the fact that our governments don't have our best interests at heart etc. That could be my cynical world view but music, through it's lyrical themes, has opened my eyes to the world and generally the music I gravitate towards lines up with my world views.
That for me is where I'm at with Gojira. I'll be honest, I've never delved too deep into their lyrics but this is giving me the urge to.
I love discussions like this and it has given me the urge to do a full discography playthrough!
-

I finally listened to Fortitude all the way through and it's a fantastic album lyrically. Fortitude is an amazing song as is The Chant. I followed along by reading the lyrics on Genius, and they have quotes from interviews on some of the songs meanings.
Grind is a great one, because it's about even though all this should be considered. You should still wash the dishes, and just grind your way through this life. Like finding a way to get money, and live life as fulfilling as you can.. because this is reality, even though one may not like the lifestyle, habits, and behaviors of the way humans currently live.

Bump.
This band has been owning me lately. Specifically how stunningly tight they are and the unique rhythm patterns. The drummer is extremely talented.
The Grammy nominations prompted me to spin their most recent album and it is awesome.

Missed this release from last week (I think), but Gojira dropped a single. Not bad at all

Yea I've listened to it a few times and am liking it. Some if the riffage reminds me of Lamb of God.

Last night's show in Boston was killer. It was a pretty similar show to when I saw them last opening for Deftones, but the crowd was much more into it this time since they were headlining. They blew Mastodon out of the water, in my opinion.
The setlist was very good, though nothing too surprising.
