Buckethead is one of my 2 allowed mancrushes. (JP being the other) The music he makes is so atmospheric, and so inspiring, and so weird at the same time. He's a genius.
So, wanna get into Buckethead? Our own Lateralus88 has made the definitive guide as to which albums to start with.
It really depends on what you are looking for, honestly.
If you want a bit more straight forward, guitar solo wizardy filled with some really groovy moments - Population Override. It's like 10 long guitar solos/jam sessions. It's fantastic.
If you want something a bit more...mind-fuck oriented - Bucketheadland 2, Inbred Mountain or Kaleidoscalp
If you want something a tad electronic/beat oriented - Monsters and Robots (well this fits under the next category as well), Bermuda Triangle or Funnel Weaver
If you want some just really cool sounding guitar music with lots of really heavy moments - Albino Slug, The Elephant Man's Alarm Clock, Decoding the Tomb of the Banshee Bot, Island of Lost Minds or Crime Slunk Scene.
If you want something really, really chill and easy to relax to - Colma or Electric Tears. :hat :hat :hat :hat :hat
If you want something like you've never heard - Spinal Clock. It's banjo music. I don't even know if I like this album or not.
And if you want something that samples a lot of Buckethead's different styles - Giant Robot.
Don't even get me started with his side projects like The Deli Creeps or Praxis. And pay no attention to Enter the Chicken. It's really not that good of an album. Aside from 3 songs, its' generally just meh for Buckethead.

Agreed that he is a genius.
Giant Robot, Bucketheadland 1 and 2, Monsters and Robots and Inbred Mountain are just utter masterpieces.
I've seen him live once, and he puts on a great, yet strange as shit, concert.
-
I need to see him live. Him and Neal.
Every album of his I've heard has been absolutely amazing.

Neal Morse is amazing live.
-
Buckethead is the fucking man
-
Nottingham Lace is one of the greatest things ever created by man.
-
I love Buckethead. Probably my favorite guitarist.
I've never listened to an album of his that I didn't like. Colma, Giant Robot, Crime Slunk Scene and Population Override are masterpieces as is Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) by Praxis.
His work with Thanatopsis and Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains is amazing as well.
-
<3 Buckethead
-
<3 Buckethead
no wai
-
I used to hate him. Well, not hate, I guess dislike him, before ever hearing a single note he played.
I d/l-ed Colma a couple of days ago, and I must say that I'm impressed. And that I will check him out further, and most of all, give him some credit.
-
Brian Carrol
Very talented.
"Watching the ships with Dad"
-
saw him back in August, pretty cool, but a lot of the same shit after 15 minutes.
-
I think he's overrated because of Guitar Hero
-
Guitar Hero may have introduced a lot of people to him but a fair amount of the stuff mention in even this thread would never belong in Guitar Hero. It'd be like, 2 or so years down the road, saying DT is overrated because Panic Attack is on Rock Band. Hell, even WITH Guitar Hero he's still not that well known. I think more people played Jordan and went into rage mode instead of going "woah, this song's hard so Buckethead must be the bestest guitarist ever" and, even then, the kids who do that are going to go crazier over Dragon Force than him. Actually, I know quite a few people who have GH2 but have no idea what I'm talking about when I mention Buckethead.
I'd be interested in hearing what albums of his you've listened to, if any.
-

I liked the part where you implied that I can't listen to him and still think he is overrated.

I like the part where you have no idea what "implied" means. If I were trying to "imply" you hadn't heard any of this stuff then I would have said "You should probably listen to some of his stuff before claiming he's overrated." and wouldn't have even bothered asking what albums you've heard.
-
He gets too weird in places for me, but some albums are fantastic. Specifically, Population Override and Crime Slunk Scene are really really good.

Quite frankly, you're not making any sense. I used "implied" correctly, and your backtracking doesn't change what your post said.
Anyway I feel I'm going off-topic, and as I don't really have anything else to say about Buckethead, I'm going now
-
How am I backtracking? I asked you what albums you've listened to, if any and you still refuse to answer it. As someone who has multiple albums of his, I know that different albums of his can sound like completely different artists. Monsters and Robots is nothing like Colma and both are extremely different from Population Override.
I didn't even come close to implying what you said, so, no, I'm going to say you didn't use it correctly.
-
Colma was one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard (I felt colma (song) was a little odd - it was more chilling than beautiful)
Although Buckethead's more famous as a shredder, I think it's when he playes beautifully, is where he really gets to shine. Far better than the overrated Yngwie IMO
-
NECROTHREAD
Alright people, UMH had a facebook status about him, and so I decided I must get more Buckethead. I've heard some random songs, like Jordan, White Wash, and Soothsayer, and loved them all, but I have no actual albums. GIVE ME RECOMMENDATIONS NAO
-
Bucketheadland 2, Giant Robot, Monsters and Robots, Population Override, Crime Slunk Scene, Inbred Mountain, Albino Slug.
Definitely get Albino Slug.
-
Albino Slug it is then.
-
You are in for some serious awesome.
-
Never heard Albino Slug.
My main suggestions would be Population Override, Colma, Monsters and Robots, and Enter The Chicken.
-
Never heard Albino Slug.
You're missing out.
-
Love Buckethead! One of the greatest guitarists out there!
-
One of the greatest musicians out there!
Fix'd
-
upon seeing this thread I realized I had never given buckethead a fair chance, that has now changed. Thank you.
-
I fucking hate you UMH. I just downloaded it, and am studying for circuits. The Dawn of the Deuce comes on, and I cream my pants, and have to change. The Flee Flicker and Symmetrical Slug, and same fucking thing. I NEED TO BE STUDYING GOD DAMMIT, NOT smileING MY PANTS AT EVERY TRACK.
-
I told you. It's the best Buckethead album, easily.
-
I have electric tears and colma and both are great. Are there any other albums like that, I'm not looking for shreddy type stuff.
-
Population Override
Though, even if you're not into shred, if you just want a heavier, riffier Buckethead, Albino Slug is the way to go.
-
Cool I'll check out both of those :)
-
i am listening to Coma. The one with Azam Ali singing and it's so beautiful !
i should really get some albums from bucketheeeeeeeeeeead
-
HE'S HALF ALIVE, HE'S HALF DEAD!
-
HE'S HALF ALIVE, HE'S HALF DEAD!
folks just call him Buckethead!
-
HE'S HALF ALIVE, HE'S HALF DEAD!
folks just call him Buckethead!
fucking awesome weirdo technical blazing guitar solo
-
His acoustic album Acoustic Shards is pretty awesome. I've only ever listened to Pepper's Ghost which I loved. I really have to listen to a couple more.
-
Which should be my first album if I love Soothsayer but don't really like Jordan?
-
Albino Slug is pretty much the answer to everything.
-
Slayer is pretty much the answer to everything.
:neverusethis:
-
NECROTHREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, Buckethead just released an album of Banjo music. Listen to it.
-
I think he's overrated because of Guitar Hero
THIS
-
Population Override has to be my favorite Buckethead album I own so far. He has so many albums that fit so many moods its cool.
-
Pepper's Ghost is fucking awesome. I'm just listening to it now for the first time.
-
Soothsayer is so overrated it's not even funny. In fact, I don't know why something being overrated to any degree would be funny at all. I never got the "X is so Y it's not even funny" saying. So why did I use it? I have no clue.
-
ehra is so overrated it's not even funny.
-
Yeah, he's pretty much a douche-nozzle.
-

It's like saying: X is so Y that it is ridiculous and lol-worthy. But when X is just SO Y, then it passed the point of being funny and it is jsut plain wrong and, well, not even funny.
On-topic: Buckethead is cool stuff so far, not sure which album to buy just yet though.
-
Pepper's Ghost or Population Override.
You might want to ask Lateralus88 though, since he's the resident Buckethead expert.

Yeah, he and UMH recommended me some stuff in the Avant-garde thread.
Great, now I have 7 BH albums to choose from. -_-

I downloaded Colma. It's a neat little album!

Yup made it for his mom so she can have calm music to listen to while in the hospital

-
Well you can't go wrong with any of his albums. I'd say for your case, try Giant Robot and Bermuda Triangle.

Put it in the OP. You are the one who started the thread.

Love me some Buckethead! :metal :metal
I even have #770 of the special edition of Cyborg Slunks, cover drawn and signed by Buck himself. :hat

Keep in mind, these are just kind of what I would consider...essentials. His work I didn't mention this post is all fantastic and worth checking out.
-
Giant Robot it is.
-
Good choice. It's a fantastic album. Weird at times, but you know, that's just Buckethead.
-
Next, go for Albino Slug. Even if Giant Robot is too weird for you, Albino Slug is much more mature and less focused on wackiness (Not that wackiness is bad).
On a related note: KYAHAHAHA, I AM CENTIPEDE WOMAN!!!!!!
-
Ever listen to In Search Of The?
-
Yes. T'was a daunting task, but there's some great stuff on it.
-
Albino Slug is pretty damn good.
-
Damn right it is. Try out Bucketheadland 2 next.
-
ZOMFG NEW BUCKETHEAD ALBUM AND IT'S AS GOOD AS IF NOT BETTER THAN ALBINO SLUG HOLY SHIT LISTEN TO IT IT'S AMAZING.

-
Out of the three albums I've heard it's my favorite so far.
-
I've only heard Bucketheadland 2, Crime Slunk Scene, and Pepper's Ghost. Pepper's Ghost was my favorite but my favorite song was Soothsayer.
Man, Buckethead is awesome.
-
You are missing out on so many fantastic albums, both of you. SO. MANY.
-
Give me your album ranking and I'll start from the top.
Also, Albino Slug kicks so much ass.
-
>Album ranking
>Buckethead
Does not compute. He's one of those artists that has too much diverse material to rank.
Tale a look at this though:

Also his newest album (titled Happy Holidays from Buckethead) is worth checking out as well. And as an addition to that list, if you are looking for some extremely HEAVY Buckethead, Cuckoo Clocks From Hell is the direction you need to go.
-
That works. I'll report back after I listen to a few albums.
-
Good :tup
-
That post has saved us from so many complicated explanations. I worship it.
-
I'm listening to Bucketheadland 2 right now. This complete instasnity
I love it.
-
I listened to Colma, Electric Tears, and the newest untitled album today. All I have to say is HOLY SHIT COLMA IS FUCKING AWESOME
-
Inbred Mountain is probably the next logical step for you, zkshalkflheojhlogksjrylhojirsyhokrsjso.
Glaurung, if you haven't heard the softer albums yet, hit Colma and Electric Tears.
-
zkshalkflheojhlogksjrylhojirsyhokrsjso.
If only I could get a mod to change my name.
-
I think it's too many characters. Every page would be extended to the side.

Yeah, Buckethead is pretty instane.

I gotta admit, I lol'd pretty hard when I xame into this thread and saw this.
-
:lol :lol :lol
-
I aint even mad.
-
So, for my new years resolution I'm going to be writing full reviews for every single one of Buckethead's solo albums. It comes out to a total of 47 albums when you include all 13 discs of In Search of The and the three non-canonical demo albums. I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully some of you guys will follow it.
-
I am interest.
-
I actually... procured his discography last night after seeing this thread. Holy shit was I surprised to find 45 albums waiting for me this morning :lol After skipping around to a few random songs I settled on listening to Monsters and Robots front to back... pretty cool stuff :hat

You are in an extremely lucky position. Make use of the OP to figure out what to listen to and when.
-
Halfway through Pepper's Ghost and digging that as well, especially Magua's Scalp and Brewer in the Air (currently playing)
-
I :heart Pepper's Ghost.
-
Just finished Pepper's Ghost. I liked that he let loose with the shred a little more in the second half of the album without letting it take over and change the overall vibe of the album. Heading straight into Population Override now :metal
-

Definitely one of the best BH albums. TOO MANY HUMANS!
-
So as I'm listening to more Buckethead (which is all I've listened to for the last week or so), I'm beginning to decide which are my favorite albums.
Albino Slug and the newest Untitled album are both incredible and they are the best of the straight forward rock/metal albums.
Colma and A Real Diamond in the Rough are my favorite chill albums. :hat :hat
Population Override has my favorite Buckethead guitar solos on it (other than Soothsayer :tup)
Bucketheadland 2 is the best "weird as shit" album.
In conclusion HOLY SHIT BUCKETHEAD IS AWESOME.
-
Nottingham Lace ends abruptly. That's the only thing I don't like about it. Just thought I'd bring that up
-
Thanks guys. You've just cost me a few quid. I always ignored him because of the bucket I guess but he's really good. I posted a thread today asking for some guitar stuff in the vein of Marty friedman's Scenes etc, and whilse this isn't it it will do for now. Quite a bit to work through.
-
Listened through Captain EO's voyage. Such great rock ambiance. It must be listened to as an entire album. Pure genius.
-
Giant Robot Review posted in the reviews section. :D
-
Cool!
-
There oughta be a Buckethead survivor with all of his solo albums ;D. But how would you decide which songs goes to finals? So hard.
-
That would never work. There are way too many albums. :lol
-
30 Solo studio albums. Oh yeah, some of his songs are short like 20 sec songs - but looking at like his first album on wiki you can see that the songs can easily be grouped into a longer "epic". Might be possible - though deciding the best songs will be hard.
-
So, the only Buckethead album I've heard is Crime Slunk Scene. I find it pretty entertaining, but it doesn't totally "wow" me. How does that album rank in comparison to his other stuff?
-
I really like Crime Slunk Scene, but it is pretty standard as a Buckethead album. He has a large handful of better material.
-
Refer to the ultimate post of "SO LOL WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO", aka the OP.
If you want a quick answer, it will always be Albino Slug, from me at least.
-
Crime Slunk is avg except for Soothsayer which is a God Tier song imo.
-

Yeah, I'm going to use that post to make my next album choice. I was just curious how well-regarded Crime Slunk Scene was.
-

Pretty much sums it up. Soothsayer might be my favorite Buckethead song ever.
-
Wow, physical copies of some of his albums are expensive. On Amazon, at least.
-
tdrsmusic.com
You won't find them all there, but you can get a few of them for about $15. You may have to turn to alternative means for the rest.

Good review. I'm looking forward to the Colma review. :tup
-
So am I. I fucking love Colma.
-
Colma deserves a 7/5 for Hills of Eternity alone. The rest is just an added bonus :p.
-
Colma is going to be the first album where it's going to be hard to pick a favorite song and an overall rating.
-
Well it has Hills of Eternity on it. So it shouldn't be too hard of a decision.
:neverusethis:
-
Well yes but it also has Whitewash, For Mom, Ghost, Machete, Wishing Well, and Watching the Boats With My Dad. :p
-
Colma posted.

And Bermuda Triangle was posted a long time ago. I'm not sure why I neglected to bump the thread.
EDIT: Bucketheadland 2 posted.
-
Necrobump.
Buckethead is awesome. I currently have Electric Sea, Electric Tears, Colma, The Elephant Man's Alarm Clock, Pepper's Ghost, Look Up There, Inbred Mountain and Population Override. And while I dig his softer stuff, I just love it when he completely lets loose on the insanity (e.g. the whole of Inbred Mountain).
-
I have most of his catalog up until about 2007 or so... He was releasing stuff so fast I just couldn't keep up.
Great stuff though
-
Those are great albums. I had found INSEARCHOFTHE, its ok has some cool songs but overall its mainly just jams and noodling...I was thinking of selling it
-
So, as Buckethead is more prolific than a sex maniac Catholic, is anyone in DTFland an expert on the Pikes?
Which are the best?
I prefer him when he's not being weird.
-
I like Look Up There, but I don't really know the majority of Pikes, so...
-
Bucket head releases more albums a year than Tool write songs.
-
Every time I look, I swear he's put out like twenty more albums. Jeeeezus. :lol
-
I really only like 1/3 of Buckethead's albums so I only have, like, 60 to listen to.
The best thing to do with the Pikes is just to devote an hour or two and just listen to samples from each one. I only like the mellow or metal BH albums so I avoid the funk, the shredding, the 30 minutes of weird noises, and whatever other crap.
I really only buy physical CDs but those Pikes are expensive and no matter the length of a track, they are $.99 on amazon. So I have gotten a few Pikes (2 tracks, 30 minutes in length) as downloads for $1.98. Add to it that for prime members you can choose "no rush" shipping and get $1 in digital music credits.
If all else fails, check out the Pike Suggester https://decino.nl/?p=pikesuggester
-
Hey that is really useful! Will definitely check out Buckethead further using that.
First stop: The Spirit Winds (I'm feeling noodly).
-

Let me know what else you come up with. The Spirit Winds is a great start. I counted it up and I have 20 pikes, all of the moody or heavy variety so let me know if you need any suggestions. I really only like 1/3 of Buckethead's albums so I only have, like, 60 to listen to.

That pike selector is a godsend. Cheers! At least I have somewhere to start, and to avoid :lol
Trust me, theres a lot to avoid and this is coming from a pretty big Buckethead fan.

I gave up after...6 or 7. There's like 130 now.

I read this and thought you were exaggerating. That man has released a 150 albums in 2 years time. That incredible! And impossible to follow. Anyone up for a discography thread?
-
Ultimetalhead was doing a great job of this and that's where I started.
-
Was there ever a reason given for him deciding to massively increase his output of albums?
-
If they're all on Spotify - massive choice of streaming = loads more income.
That's my reason for putting out so much material anyway ! ;D
-
When you look at the progression of Buckethead's albums, it is pretty odd. His first album was released in Japan only. Then he had a very electronic album and an acoustic album and a few others but around that time he joined Guns N' Roses.
I think with the extra income he bought some better equipment, perfected his performance, and got fed up with the music scene in general thanks in part to Guns but also past record companies he dealt with. Starting around 2004, he released one or two (or four) albums a year. Now with a solid fan base, he can release even more BUT I think the quality has suffered in a lot of instances.
Most of these Pikes are 28 minutes long. Of the 20 I have (and did a lot of sampling before deciding to buy), only a portion are great material. The guy is a genius, no doubt, but I think a lot of it he just regurgitates and knows he can make a decent profit off of. I'm kinda getting tired of the same drum machine sound. Thankfully, it is a great drum machine but on every single release, the drums are IDENTICAL.
Plus, he was having back problems so I doubt he left the house much so I bet he got bored.
-
Just looked up that he so far released 78 albums this year. :lol
-
78 albums in a year !
Tool have some catching up to do !
As do I :emo: I've only put out a measly FOUR albums this year
-
I think he has another coming out today. He's released one each day this month.
-
How the hell do you record an album a day ?
It must be generic twiddling over a drum machine for half an hour split into "tracks"... ?
And he charges for them ?!

Sometimes he doesn't even do that much. He has entire "albums" that are just weird sound effects played on his guitar through pedals.
Entire albums.
On that same token, some of those Pikes that he churns out are really beautiful or really rocking.
-
The Pikes that I have heard are all really good, but that might have just been lucky pickings.
I know Look Up There, The Shores of Molokai, Underground Chamber and The Spirit Winds.
-
The ones I have so far are:
It Smells Like Frogs
Squid Ink Lodge
Thank You Ohlingers
Worms For The Garden
Miskatonic Scale
and my personal favorite: Hold Me Forever. I listened to that one when my mom was in the hospital and I connected to it, even though there are no lyrics.

I may have mentioned it before, but I download Buckethead's pikes through Amazon. Every couple of months, Amazon offers $1 digital download credits if you have prime and choose "no rush" shipping instead of 2-day
Every several months I see what Amazon has released of the pikes (normally they only have maybe 40% of them). I sample all of the latest ones released (they aren't released to amazon in order). To my dismay, most of what he released to Amazon since the summer are awesome. Fortunately, a lot of them are 2 or 3 tracks. They were also slightly cheaper than normal. $1.78 for a 2 track - 28 minute album. Not bad at all.
I just "purchased" (well, free download credits):
Project Little Man
Infinity of the Spheres
Listen for the Whisper
Northern Lights
The Left Panel
All two tracks. All WAYYYYYYY worth $1.78 each.
I also got The Boiling Pond (pretty good) and Twisterland (awesome).
All together that makes 26 pikes I have acquired, probably only spending a total of $25 bucks total after the download credits I accumulated.
Of those, I would say 90% are badass but I did a lot of research before I got them.
