Hello everyone, some of you may remember that I transcribed Distance Over Time last year and sent out Guitar Pro 7 and PDF files for free. Now I'm doing the same for all of Dream Theater's studio releases from the 90s. I decided to completely redo all of these albums because the old books all have errors and inaccuracies (some more frequently than others). Also because the isolated guitar tracks are available for these albums. Today I've released my transcription of A Change of Seasons (title track only), and will be releasing the rest of the albums chronologically in the coming weeks. I've also done short lesson videos for each song, here's the full playlist:
Dream Theater - "How It's Played" Lesson Videos (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNYXfMfhF-A9e3wTtjJW2TWR56ZSUewRb)
Now you may be wondering, "why should I trust this guy's transcriptions?" I am a professional transcriber with many official tab books to my name (link below). Also, I won JP's Match the Master contest in 2016: Meeting John Petrucci (http://blog.music-man.com/uncategorized/match-the-master-meeting-john-petrucci/)
Link to all of my official tab books:

If you'd like to get the tabs, please email me via the "contact me" form on my website: Contact Me (https://www.evanbradleytranscriptions.com/contact)

Awesome!
I have all the DT/JP tab books over the years but I can't play a large chunk of it cuz of... inaccuracies. Yeah, that's it, it's not cuz I suck at all, so finally having accurate ones will mean I can finally do it!
I suggested this to you last time as well, but doing the tabs for LTE would really be great since they've never existed officially. Even just doing the "cool" tracks (Paradigm Shift, Another Dimension, etc) and not the weird or jammy ones would be totally tits.
-
Very cool, Evan! I already have the Tempo of the Damned and Fabulous Disaster books, so these corrected versions will be a welcome addition. Will they also release via Sublevel Books? My only request is to print them in a standard musical book size, as the smaller format is constrained by two bars (plus tab) per page. EDIT: I just reread the post and it clearly says that you're sending out PDFs, so no printing.
By the way, the original I&W book included transcriptions by John Petrucci, and the Awake book states it was "Edited by John Petrucci" right smack dab on the cover. So maybe he's to blame for the inaccuracies, lol?
Also, I second the above request of the much overdue LTE book.

Right? We should stop buying all those "Official" tab books with a bunch of inaccuracies, making it impossible to learn the song by reading the tabs/music.
Thank you for doing this Evan.

They're completely free. Just contact me via my website https://www.evanbradleytranscriptions.com/contact and I'll send you the download link. I actually updated a couple measures last night and re-sent the download link to everyone who had already requested the tab. If you didn't receive the update, feel free to email me again.

Do you have transcriptions for Awake? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tab for the Lie outro solo that’s ever been close to accurate.

Yes, I have full books completed for IAW, Awake, FII, and SFAM. I'll be releasing them in that order in the coming weeks. The only songs that aren't included are Wait For Sleep and Through My Words, since there's no guitar on them.

Could you include those anyway? I can't even play silence as well as JP, so I'd love to see how he does it.

Niiiice. Welp, now I know what I’ll be doing all spring/summer.

I updated this lick because while I had the correct notes, I was actually using a more difficult fingering than the way JP plays it live. Somehow I had forgotten that this part is shown clearly on Live at Budokan - Instrumedley.
I've updated my transcription, and if you'd like the free tab book, contact me via my website: https://www.evanbradleytranscriptions.com/contact

It’s always the fingering that’s wrong in most of the tabs online in general. It’s almost always easier to play it the way Petrucci (or any famous guitarist for that matter) does it.

You guys all make it look so easy... and sound easy also. I wish I knew how to record into my PC but every time I try to learn it seems overly complicated.

I still consider myself a novice when it comes to recording. I connect my Fractal AX8 to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 right into the computer. I use Audacity to record the audio, which is a free software. Like anything else, you need to just keep doing it to get better. Even if you just record yourself and never share it with anyone, it's a very humbling experience and will make the flaws in your playing readily apparent.
Regarding LTE tabs, I would do it in a heartbeat if I had access to the isolated tracks like the DT stuff. Having worked with Cynic and other bands who have provided me with the isolated tracks, I'm kinda spoiled now and don't want to go back to struggling just to hear things from an album mix.
By the way, the original I&W book included transcriptions by John Petrucci, and the Awake book states it was "Edited by John Petrucci" right smack dab on the cover. So maybe he's to blame for the inaccuracies, lol?
Some parts of those books are pretty darn close (Voices solo for example), others are baffling in how wrong they are (Caught in a Web chromatic part). A microcosm of this is Under a Glass Moon. The solo (surely one of the JP transcriptions mentioned on the cover) is very close, but pretty much every rhythm part in the original book is wrong to some degree. I'll be dissecting the chorus riff specifically in an upcoming video.
I already have specific parts picked out to demonstrate for each song from IAW, Awake, FII, and SFAM, but if you guys have any requests or questions, please let me know!

My free Images and Words tab book is now available! The original book for this album has tons of errors and inaccuracies in it, which I'll be pointing out in my "How It's Played" series. My free book for A Change of Seasons is also available, and I'll be releasing books for Awake, Falling Into Infinity, and Scenes From a Memory in the coming weeks. Just contact me via my website https://www.evanbradleytranscriptions.com/contact for the book.

I will say, The past few weeks I've been listening to music at work since I'm alone in the office. Last week I started doing a run through DT Discography (Next week Systematic chaos).
When listening to Another day, I felt some desire to play the song. I don't know why but the song sounded more beautiful than ever and the guitar was much more stunning than ever before. Maybe I should give it a try :metal
Thanks again for the upload

Evan, where did you find the isolated tracks for A Change of Seasons? I would love to listen to the isolated instruments.
-
I downloaded the Distance over time Book about a year ago and helped me play Bar stool warrior, and in my opinion its really close enough to the record, I am now reading the updated version and see all the corrections.
This will be an interesting study!
I have to brush up on my sight reading skills!

This solo is actually much easier to play than how it's written in the original tab book.

Also, I am not able to share the isolated tracks for these albums, but they're honestly pretty easy to find.

Do you have a band or any original music we can check out?
Also, if you have a 6-string, it might be helpful to play 6-string songs on a 6-string instead of a 7. I can imagine as a beginner, when trying to watch what you're doing, the 7th string will mess with them. If I'm jamming with buddies who are new and I use my 7-string and trying to show them stuff it definitely confuses them.

One of the recurring themes with the old Dream Theater tab books: take an already difficult part and make it practically impossible by transcribing it in a horribly awkward way.

Anyone looking to improve their string skipping would do well to learn this section.

I have been really struggling with Erotomania, wow this really helps. I am looking forward see the Awake book redone!
-
Also, the Erotomania tab book has a couple of glaring typos on page 52, although the standard notation is actually correct.

Another part that was unplayable in the original Awake book:

In my experience a lot of this tab books from Metallica to Satriani are like that. Heck even in written classical Guitar Music it happens and those are not really transcribed by ear since those pieces where also transcribed by the original composer but somehow after a few editions things have changed and its a mess!

Everything is entered into Guitar Pro 7 by me. I use Amazing Slow Downer to slow down the audio tracks.

Man, that section of You Not Me is so damn cool. Not to derail your thread, but I'm an amateur guitarist and these videos are a lot of fun to watch even though I'll never reach the level to be able to play them.

Peruvian Skies - How It's Played Episode 25 (https://youtu.be/EkIF_3EDksw)
I never knew (not being a guitarist, I'm a drummer), but I guessed so because of how low the root note is in every phrase of your excerpt.

Another relatively simple song with some baffling chord voicings in the original tab book.
Hollow Years - How It's Played Episode 26 (https://youtu.be/VdipT6atqh0)
-
You should have said "here it is played faster", opposite of your usual, and then acoustically shredded it.
Seriously, though, that's why I have so much trouble with JP and also so much respect for JP... even his "simple" and "gentle" parts that sound easy always have something difficult/weird about them. There's some crazy stretches/barring in this one but it doesn't sound tough until you actually see the tab.

Noice, it's a rockin' tune.
I always found it confusing as a beginner player when tabs had every.single.nuance written down. Minor pick scrapes to muffled random percussion to "free" strumming to how far to bend the bar and shit like that. I'd spend too much time trying to play the tab exactly as written. Once it "clicked" for me that I can have my own strumming cadence or whatever it became a lot clearer and easier for me.
I show people the basic chords or whatever and put emphasis on those until they get that down and then can start "feeling" the music instead of micro-managing the minutia. For example, it's funny to see players who will slide "up" into a note on the 12th fret from EXACTLY the 8th fret when, in reality, you just slide up from pretty much wherever.
TL;DR - How you tab-makers are able to hear and notate the tiniest sounds and details is amazing.

Full band score books (with guitar tabs) for When Dream and Day Unite and A Change of Seasons (with transcriptions to the live B side songs) were published in Japan in 1994 and 1996, respectively. If you want your brain to explode trying to process all the mistakes on those pages, give 'em a read.

DT89, any chance you might transcribe Don't Look Past Me or Raise the Knife in the near future?
I've already transcribed the solos to DLPM, I might revisit this song and see if I can transcribe the rhythm parts, but it's unfortunate that there isn't a proper studio version, the demo recording quality isn't great. Dream Theater - Don't Look Past Me solos (https://youtu.be/rJdEhjKFfkE)
Raise the Knife is a possibility, but again the demo recording quality is a bit of a deterrent. I'll have to see what I can glean from Score and any other live videos.
-
Cool - thanks for the link! Do you have a physical copy of the Cleaning Out the Closet fan club CD with Don't Look Past Me? It's actually a remixed version and better quality than the other versions that are out there (such as the official Ytsejam bootleg) .
For what it's worth, I have an instrumental version of Raise the Knife, although my version is copied on cassette from the internet. It was first downloadable on fan sites without lyrics back in 1998, so that version exists, although it might have been taken from the house soundtrack at a live concert because it clearly has an audience applauding at the end. Any effort on transcribing this would be enormous contribution to the DT fanbase.

Thanks, I had already bookmarked a few live videos of DLPM in case I revisit it.

Great solo, GREAT TAB! :coolio

DT89, no I was referring to something else. It's basically the full song, identical to the demo cut, but instruments only, but it has a live crowd. As if there was a live playing of the unfinished demo. I downloaded it in 1998 from the site Caught in A Worldwide Web I think.

I don't play guitar, but have to say that you are incredibly generous. Any time somebody applies their passion to help others, it's really inspiring. Thanks!

Thank you! Hopefully these videos are also interesting to non-guitarists and shed some light on some parts you may have never noticed before.

Yea, thank you. These videos are great.
Man, the guitar parts in Trial of Tears are so beautiful and unique. Just an amazing composition on every level.

I started relearning New Millennium over the weekend, only to find that DT89's video had been taken down or made private. Is there a reason this is not available to the public anymore? Obviously, you have every right to do as you wish with your videos, just curious to know. Actually, I'm more curious to learn the song correctly.

I hope to redo that video and a few others in the future, because I actually corrected a few things. I recently updated my DT books (mostly formatting/aesthetic stuff), contact me via my website https://www.evanbradleytranscriptions.com/contact and I'll send you the latest versions.

I think this is a good way to cap off my Dream Theater transcriptions in 2020. This is my 44th DT tab that I've released this year! Bombay Vindaloo is an improvised jam that was only performed six times in 1993, so this was a unique challenge, given that there's no available video of this performance. I'm also planning on releasing another free tab book (not DT) in the very near future.
Contact me via my website https://www.evanbradleytranscriptions.com/contact for the free tab. If you've already received DT tabs from me before, this song has been added to the "miscellaneous songs" folder.

Great and spot on work as always Evan. Love that you chose this gem from the I&W era. Would love to see Hollow Years live at Budokan some day to see if I got it right.

Of course I had to transcribe the LTE 3 teaser!

Awesome!
I also love the solos from Elements of Persuasion you did and you even included the bonus track of "Understand" which has one of my all-time favourite solos.

This transcription completes LTE3! Always a blast to transcribe John Petrucci's stuff. Speaking of that, I have another special JP transcription that I'm planning on doing a "How It's Played" video for. Just need to find the time!

Here are my transcriptions for the new album! My box set arrived on Tuesday from Laser CD, so I had quite the busy week. I'm saving Awaken the Master for last since there probably aren't too many 8-stringers out there. Will hopefully finish that one in the next few days.

The rhythm guitar part that starts in verse 2 and transitions to the part with the pull-offs is a great picking exercise I think!

Did you have to buy and 8-string or did you already have one or did you just use your 7-string and fudge it and write the notes on the 8th string in the tab?

I do not have an 8-string. For any low parts I wanted to play along to on my 7-string, I would pitch up the recording 5 semitones. For the really low riffage, I pitched up the recording an octave, which often helps distinguish the notes when transcribing low tunings.

Great job as Always DT89, I can't seem to find a tab for The Holiday Spirit Carries On. Any plans on tabbing that one? 😎🎅

A View From the Top of the World Guitar Tab (https://youtu.be/y3TU_ECEj_Y)
Thank you for this, it confirmed what I was hearing in the intro (the low B coming in @1:04), with the pattern shifting by a sixteenth on the 2nd and 4th pass. As if that section wasn't already difficult to wrap my head around. :justjen

For me, even with the tab, I just can not follow that intro. It just won't sink into my head no matter how hard I try.

Though I transcribed all of the 90s albums and released my corrected tab books over a year ago, I thought this would be a good song to do a full synchronized tab video for. Maybe I'll do more of the 90s songs in the future.

Happy 20th anniversary to Six Degrees! This solo is one of my favorites from JP and I thought this transcription would be a fun way to commemorate the album.

I'm back again with another updated DT tab book! Transcribed from the isolated guitar tracks, and I of course referenced live videos as well. Songs will be uploaded to my channel each day of the week, concluding with the title track on Friday.

Is this the first album they didn't release an official tab book for?
I always get them anyway but this one doesn't seem to exist.
