Title: Your top 3 DT albums (other than the regular top 4)
Post by: Northern Lion on March 09, 2020, 05:44:54 PM
It was proposed in the last top 3 poll thread that a new poll be created that did not include the top 4 albums that always win.  Namely:

Images and Words
Awake
Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

So, what are your top 3 other than the top 4?

Here are mine:

The Astonishing
A Dramatic Turn of Events
Systematic Chaos

D/T almost made my list, and who knows, in the future it just might.

This was harder than I anticipated.

The four excluded albums are typically my top 4, so we're basically talking about spots 5-7.

I can eliminate

WDADU
FII
SC
BC&SL
TA

That leaves me with five albums to fill three spots:

TOT
8VM
ADTOE
DT12
DOT

TOT definitely gets one of the spots, and I'm pretty sure that I like ADTOE and DT12 better than DOT, so that means I have to choose two out of 8VM, ADTOE and DT12.  8VM has to make it because the title track is the best song on any of those albums, and I think I have to go with DT12 by a nose over ADTOE (even though I typically regard BAI as the best Mangini era song).

So...TOT, 8VM and DT12 it is.

Hard for me as well.

I eliminated the below easily:

WDADU
FII
BC&SL
DT12

Which left:

ToT
8VM
SC
ADToE
TA
DoT

ADToE is in my top 4, so I have to go with that one.

ToT I enjoy, though usually just listen to Budokan if I want to listen to those songs.
I can't in good faith pick 8VM since I rarely listen to it.
I really enjoy SC other than CM/TDEN/R, which leaves quite a bit of music.
TA I still don't know how I feel about to this day.
And I like DoT, but it never rises above "eh... it's a good album."

So:

ADToE, SC, and..... well hell.... ToT.

Fairly easy for me. Octavarium and Train of Thought are already in my top 3 (along with Scenes), so that leaves DT12 to complete the set.

Pretty easy for me too - I&W is the only one of the 'big 4' in my top 3 (at #1), so I just had one spot to fill.

1. Train of Thought
2. A Dramatic Turn of Events
3. Octavarium

Octavarium was my introduction to the band and was one of my favourites for a while. It's not in my top tier of DT albums these days, but it's still a great listen and I favour it over a couple of the big 4 too (it's slightly ahead of Awake and way ahead of 6DOIT for me).

Difficult since those four included all of my three.

1. FII (this one was easy)
2. 8VM (less easy but still not hard)
3. ADTOE (Eh, I don't love any of the others, but this is the least offensive or boring)

I went to vote, and aside from ADToE, I couldn't decide. So, the next several days I am going to listen to every album to see if I can decide.  :metal
The thing is, Octavarium is my #1 song and there are 2 others on that record that I really love as well, but the rest, not nearly as much. The others all have 1 or 2 or 3 songs I love, but the same. I wish I could choose a live album or 2 as I end up choosing those more often.
Isn't great that this band is so good that I cant put one record above another!

8vm is actually my 4th favorite so it's the only one that changed.

This was pretty easy for me; two of my top 3 Dream Theater albums are Black Clouds & Silver Linings and Octavarium, so taking off Six Degrees and Metropolis Part 2 leaves me with A Dramatic Turn of Events as my #3 for this list.

Gave A long thought toward including FII, but I just don’t listen to it anymore.

I think it's weird that Six Degrees is under the top 4 of DT albums as in basically everybody loves it, like Metropolis. I've heard a lot of criticism about Six Degrees.

Anyway, I still vote for Octavarium and Black Clouds. I didn't pick a third one, because I couldn't decide. The third one could be a different one each week. I would chose between Train Of Thought, Falling Into Infinity (yes) and maybe Dramatic Turn.

Octavarium without question.

Then, wich such a strong and diversified quality, it's even hard to do a good ranking.

I eventually went with Dramatic and The Astonishing, but it's hard to compare them to Train of Thought or Falling Into Infinity.

I think it's weird that Six Degrees is under the top 4 of DT albums as in basically everybody loves it, like Metropolis. I've heard a lot of criticism about Six Degrees.

If you look at the other thread, in which folks are asked to vote for their top 3 DT albums ( https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=54901.0 ), the gap between the four albums excluded from this thread (I&W, Awake, SFAM and SDOIT) and the #5 album is quite stark.

As of when I looked a couple minutes ago, 93 people had voted in that poll.  The sum of the votes for all albums was 277 (which means one person only voted for one album or two people only voted for two albums).  The top four received the following votes:

SFAM - 64
I&W - 59
SDOIT - 42
Awake - 33

The #5 album received only 15 votes, which is less than half the number that Awake received and just over 1/3 of what SDOIT received.  These results are pretty typical.

Just to be clear, these results mean that 42 of the 93 people who have voted think SDOIT is at least DT's third best album.  Conversely, it means that more than half of the voters (51/93) do not consider SDOIT to be a top 3 album.  It does not mean that "basically everybody loves it."

Interestingly, the results of this poll are not tracking with the other one.

At the moment, 32 people have cast 95 votes in this thread (which means someone voted for only two albums).  The top three are as follows:

ADTOE - 18
8VM - 16
TOT - 13

By contrast, in the other thread, the top albums (after the top 4) are as follows:

8VM - 15
ADTOE - 14
TA/DOT - tied with 11 each

Not quite sure what to make of this, but since this thread currently has only about 1/3 of the votes as the other, maybe it will line up as time passes.

I noticed the same thing, and it may change with time, but it also may just be the result of removing DT's most loved albums.  People are having to resort to their 4th, 5th, or even 6th place choices.  And it looks like that can make a significant difference.

ADTOE - still the best Mangini album by a wide margin

BCSL- maybe a tie with ToT but I’ll give Black Clouds a little love- their most underrated album- fun prog Metal album, I will defend Black Clouds until the day I die.

So far seems people who prefer the big four voted here for ToT and ADToE, at least more than people who have more variety in their top 3.

Regardless of personal opinions, I would think anyone who has been around here long enough would agree that Scenes, Images, Awake and Six Degrees are the four most popular DT albums, at least with the online community, so this is a good poll.

The other poll definitely separated the big four from the others. Interestingly it also showed the big four are really split top 2 and bottom 2 as well.

I agree, I've never understood why so many here on DTF generally rank it so low. The only real stinker for me is repentance. And ITPoE is my favorite DT song.

For me, SC is quite comfortably at the bottom of my DT rankings.

CM is a very, very good song.

TDEN is good, and Forsaken is somewhat less than good.  I have zero interest in the rest of the album, and Repentance is the single worst song in DT's catalog.

I think Systematic Chaos is a lot better than people give it credit for. The only song I don't really listen to on it is Forsaken, but even then I still think Forsaken is a pretty good song. Honestly, I'd say it's a better album than Images and Words; on that album, there are two songs that I never go back to unless I'm listening to the album from start-to-finish. (Those two songs in question being Take the Time and Under A Glass Moon.)

Personally, the production is stale and Labrie's vocals are thin.     The production of the album and the vocals are very "metal".   They are not warm and proggy.

ITPOE Pt 1 is AWESOME live.  I don't love it on the record.

Repentence also feels underwritten and CM and DEN are generic.

Despite this... the album has actually grown on me over the years but its still a bottom tier DT album for me.

Take that for what it's worth though.... I love the proggy side of DT.   The "Big 4" are my top 4 with the top 3 being their masterpieces.

SC is just kind of average in every way. Even the best song ITPoE seems a bit uninspired. I’m most likely waaay off base on this but it sounds like one of those “contractually obligated” albums where a band is putting together something because they have to, not necessary because they want to.

It’s probably the DT album I listen to the least. It doesn’t help that it suffers from a compression/loudness problem. I’d love to hear a remaster of this album with some breathing room.

CM is aight. I rather like that drum/guitar break bridge where Portnoy is grooving all over the kit. Good solo by JP too.

TDEN, on the other hand I have NO time for.

Systematic Chaos sounds like a band having fun. I've always said that.

I believe Dream Theater reached a pinnacle in their career with Score. SC feels to me that they basically showed up to create SC with really nothing to shoot for. Perhaps to some, that is clear in the quality of the songs. Personally, I disagree that there's a lack of quality. I really enjoy SC for what it is. It's not serious, and has a calming looseness about it.

While I think it is one of their two least best albums, I agree with this summation; it's a fun record.

It's just too bad the songwriting wasn't up to their usual level.  While there are cool parts of each song, Constant Motion and Forsaken are two of their biggest flops ever, and even the best songs on this record don't come close to their best material, IMO.  I haven't done a DT top 50 in forever, but SC is probably the only DT record that would have no chance of having any song make it.

For me, Systematic Chaos can be, as stated above, a fun record.  And I think it is in particular a great record to listen to while driving, like on a road trip.

But the pleasure I get from the songs on this album are surface-level only.  They don't have the same depth that most of their other output has.

I believe I remember hearing in an interview once that Mike Portnoy said he usually brings some kind of album concept to the table when the band is about to begin working on a new album.  But he said that in the case of SC he had a concept in mind but decided not to mention it to the other band members.  Thus resulting in the album being written without an underlying musical/thematical/directional concept of any kind.  Perhaps this is the reason it stands out to fans as being "less than".

As for me.  I like the fun aspect of the album.  And ItPoE is my favorite DT song.  I also love the monster themed lyrics JP put on the album.  The only songs I don't really like are CM and R (sorry Mike  :))

To me, the epics on the album are tremendous. TMOLS is one of my all time favorites, and ITPOE and Repentance are pretty much perfect as well. The remaining songs are all good fun, so I love putting on the album every now and then. It's my favorite of the decade right after SDOIT.

I think you got things a little mixed up. Musically, they determined to take the heaviness of ToT and combine it with variation of light and mellow found on 8v. I can't remember exactly how MP described it, but I remember him saying something to the effect of it having that variation, but that it still would have balls. BCaSL was a continuation of that musical style, but doing so in a way that those styles were combined into a single song, instead of the songs keeping one basic style throughout, as was the case for most of SC.

What I am guessing you might be thinking of is the fact that the band always had an "inspiration corner" - a selection of CDs from various artists to reference for different elements/styles/whatever that they wanted to incorporate into the album they were working on. It was actually BCaSL that was the first one where they didn't have an "inspiration corner".

Octavarium is already my second favorite Dream Theater album only behind Scenes. A Dramatic Turn of Events is the best Mangini era album. And Distance Over Time is holding strong as my number five. I rank Octavarium above Images and Words and rank all three albums above Awake and Six Degrees.

I remember at the time thinking that’s the closest they got to doing a fantasy themed album, and thought they could have used some power/speed metal title & cover art instead of the theme that only CM really fits.

Easily D/T, FII and ADTOE for me, with ToT not too far behind that.

In the SC doc, around the 7:00 mark, he says he had some ideas going in but didn't bring them up to the other guys. He wanted to see where the writing went on its own.

Yes, that's it.  Thanks for finding that quote.

That is an odd, but very interesting selection.

Also ADToE and 8vm are now tied again.  with 32 votes each.  And D/T next with just a one vote advantage over ToT.

1. ADToE
2. FII
3. either D/T or TA, chose D/T as I will probably listen to it more often.

just to add, I always enjoy listening to The Astonishing. But it needs a whole
album listen, whereas D/T you can pick a song a rock.

My favorites were decided by
1. head banging  :metal
2. feelies I get (many just by JP's guitar)  :heart
3. and how (if any skips I do when listening)  :-X

Then let me explain.. :D
I knew DT since the start with WDADU, and this has a big place in my heart... Being I&W, Awake and SFAM my other all-time favorites, the other choice is obviuos for me with A Dramatic Turn of Events, which is more similar to the first albums IMHO... And for some reason, the energy of Train of Thought has always appealed to my metal side despite the fact that I am not a fan of In the name of God.

Of the options provided, I chose FII, 8VM, and DOT. I will admit, however, to listening to Dream Theater more of a song-by-song basis than album-by-album basis these days.

Falling Into Infinity

After that it got a bit more difficult.

Ultimately I went with TOT and 8vm (over WDADU and D/T).

Wow!  I'm gone for a few days and now there's a 3 way tie between:

TOT
8VM
ADToE

I didn't expect ToT to Jump up like that.  Pretty cool I think.
