Assuming it's the same setlist? I'll pass on that purchase.
I already have all of SFAM on DVD, and a bunch of songs from it on other DVDs. Don't really yet another DVD of SFAM songs.
I'll check out some of it on youtube though. That should be enough for me.
-
Yeah, I have little to no interest in another live version of Scenes
-
Well, it's not that everyone who isn't inclined should buy it at all costs, but it's a new show. The songs are the same of course, but the stage is different and arguably bigger than Roseland, the animations are all new and there are minor differences here and there (mini drum solo in Fatal Tragedy, ending of Through Her Eyes and Finally Free). Granted, it's not that much but it's not that they're redoing the exact August 2000 show only 20 years later.
-
I'm just hoping they do something different for the recording. I will buy it as I love well done live releases on blu-ray, but I'm more interested in owning the first set they've been doing so if they change that up between the two nights (more than just swapping FitL/Paralyzed) then I will not just buy it, but I will actually really want it. How about adding in some TA songs? I'd love a TA album much more than this release if you are comparing to the standard DT set they've been doing.
-

Likely the same with me. The SFAM set isn't likely to improve on LSFNY, and the first set was fairly lackluster. The handful of DOT songs isn't enough to get me exicited, but I'll reserve judgment until we know exactly what's on the DVD.
-
Bring in Mikael Akerfeldt for a guest appearance for the growl part in A Nightmare!!! :lol JLB did his best performing that section "his way", but it still sounded weird. The song was still my highlight of the concert, right next to the awesome drum solo in Finally Free. MM was really finally free to do whatever he liked during that outro, unlike on the Breaking The Fourth Wall DVD.
I will buy this release, even if the setlist contained a little too much D/T songs for my taste.

You do realize Mikael literally just got sick and can't sing :lol
The SFAM set isn't likely to improve on LSFNY
Where it will improve is in video quality I would imagine. I hardly ever watch my LSFNY DVD because it's not an easy watch. Nothing will replace that show and live album, but I do think this release should vastly improve upon the actual video aspect of it without the annoying effects and full HD blu ray quality.
-
I never had a problem with anything video-wise (or anything else from that release, for that matter). But those who hated the graphic overlays will likely go full-on rage mode with a non-DT upcoming video release that MP has his hands in.
Back on topic, the only slight criticism I have about LSFNY is the omission of some songs from the second set. I don't mind that the keyboard solo and Another Day are bonus videos hidden on the audio release. I wouldn't really visit them in video form anyway. But I'm bummed that we don't get video of Metropolis Pt. I (other than some pieces of it on the doc), The Mirror, or Caught In A New Millennium. Acid Rain would have been nice as well. I had always hoped we would eventually get that through a Ytsejam release, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.
I do not anticipate a similar occurrence this time around. We should get both sets in their entirety, as far as I know.
-
Well you can't mean we will get both SFAM sets? I'd imagine they plan on mixing both nights visually and using the audio from the better of the two nights. Isn't that what they did with Live at Luna Park? And if they did switch up songs, one set ends up as the bonus tracks.
Totally agree about not getting the full set on video last time, I do wish those made their way out to the public.

I'm sure yes, but I think it may improve in audio quality. IIRC, the DVD of Scenes had a Dolby stereo mix of 224 kbps or less, so not real full stereo (1536 kpbs). With this being a Bluray, you could go up to 96 kHz-24 bit stereo (4,xx Mbps). That will be worth it for me.

Your criticism is mine as well and I'm relieved we will get the entire show as well.

Well you can't mean we will get both SFAM sets?
No, not the entirety of both shows. Just the entirety of set 1 and the entirety of set 2 (and the encore). That is my assumption. But I have not asked. Working on other things at the moment.

as is mine (so the Luna Park treatment as it were, which I would favour actually). Sorry I was misunderstanding something.
-
I'm stoked for this release! :metal
They skipped the Pacific Northwest on both legs of the U.S. tour and I really want to see this show, especially for the d/t material and the other gems in the first set. ANTR and ITPOE pt1 comes to mind.
It will also be cool to see all of Scenes and how the band presents it some 20 years later.

Oh ok, yea I totally expect this, in fact I would be disappointed if they did not

Yea, I'd imagine the audio would be better but couldn't recall the sound of the DVD off my head since it's been so long since I watched. I would imagine this could be improved upon, but sometimes audio isn't always better on newer releases.

It would be funny if JP shaved his heard for the second night and still mixed both nights for the video and audio.
He has a beard for one song and the next it's gone, and then it grows back immediately for the song after and disappears again. "Scenes from a Beard" :yarr
-
:lol it's already distracting enough when bands mix two shows and wear different outfits

Jordan and James should do the same thing. And then in different shots, they should randomly digitally insert different beards onto different members.

Part of the reason I want this album is because I can't find a Metropolis 2000 DVD for the US region; I can only find ones for EU/UK regions. Regardless of that, though, I loved the first half of the concert, so I'd be getting it for that alone.
-
I could be pretty interested in this (I suspect I will wind up buying it, since I've got the other DVDs).
How many songs off of Distance Over Time are getting played on this tour?

6 in total, but only 5 each show.

Really? We kept trying to get a Region 2 one and it took 3 tries and we have 2 spare Region 1 dvds.
-
I can't wait for the release, though I assume it's at least a year out from release. This tour was so much fun and the SFAM show was a joy to be there, hearing and seeing your favorite album being performed live start to finish with some updated visuals was fantastic. Sure there's LSFNY and that magic will never be recaptured, I just want to relive the tour I went to with the additional songs that I wasn't able to see.
-

Well, 'Breaking The Fourth Wall' was recorded in March and released in September. So, it's possible you'll only need to wait for 6 months.
-
I am highly interested to see the stage production of Scenes, much more so than I have a desire to have another live recording of it. And i like DoT enough to see how those songs play live. I didn't get to see them this last tour. But with my limited time these days, and based on a few comments I've seen online, I highly doubt I will buy this, which will make it the first time I haven't bought a release of theirs since Once in a Livetime.
Wait, I didn't buy Chaos in Motion but that was garbage so I am not counting it.
-
To hear James had a tough night isn't making me feel good. I'd be fine with a release as is, but there will likely be tons of dubbing if that's the case.
Chris, you mention Chaos In Motion as garbage, but at least it's live. I can definitely appreciate that.
I literally cannot listen to LALP or BTFW because they basically sound like studio albums. I'd much rather listen to the boot to BTFW than the live CD.
-
Can't really argue with any of those three things. Though I am not a bootleg guy so can't speak to those.

Well, no biggie about being a bootleg guy, but after being familiar with the actual live recording of the show, and seeing it live, the official release sounds quite cheesy in spots.
-
I've seen some of the clips from tonight's show on YouTube and LaBrie sounded OK. He's had a pretty rough run this tour judging from most recordings I've heard but I feel definitely the night off helped him get in a better spot vocally.
I understand people are not feeling very excited for this release, but it makes all the sense in the world to record and release this show. SFAM is their money cow and they gotta keep getting milk from it as much as they can. That's not meant as a criticism in any way, because I'm probably buying it because I get excited every time DT works and records new stuff live. Also, I feel that DOT is probably their most acclaimed MM-era release up to date, so documenting this particular moment in time sounds like a good move. (I know that ADTOE had a pretty good reception back in its day, but it still had that "DT without MP" feel to it).
That being said, I would've rather had an Astonishing live release. It's quite a shame their biggest stage production ever didn't get a proper documentation (or maybe it did and for some reason the band opted to not release it). Also, the highly rumored Back at Budokan show from the Images Anniversary Tour would've been a nice release as well. Maybe they're planning a massive 3 tours-Blu Ray release? I know that's probably 95% unlikely but bands like Nightwish have done it. It's definitely doable, but I sadly do not see it happening. They have the Budokan footage (which is gorgeous by the way) and every show they've done in the past 10 years recorded in Pro Tools. It's just a matter of business, I think.
In a final note, I'd love if DT did something like Metallica's YouTube channel. I'm quite aware that Metallica is in a whole other level (financially speaking) and they can basically pro shot every show they do and release hundreds of professionally filmed and mixed shows, but I feel DT has the infrastructure to do something similar. YouTube is where every video ends up nowadays. Blu Rays aren't even a big business anymore (I'm not sure they ever were), so maybe DT can catch up with the times and do something interesting with their brand new release? I dunno.
-
Blu Rays aren't even a big business anymore (I'm not sure they ever were)
I was thinking about this angle but wasn't sure how to approach it. I assume live video releases make money (or enough downstream pub to warrant the cost), or else no band would ever release one. But as you said if they aren't a solid revenue stream, what's the future for live video releases? Do they go the way of film in general with the focus on streaming?

That's a pretty good question (and pretty hard to answer, I believe), but I feel definitely YouTube is the answer (or at least part it). Metallica have 20 or 25 different live versions of Creeping Death filmed at various concerts and people still keep coming back to watch them all. Even though they release it for free, they make money with that, and because they are always uploading new content the YouTube algorithm sends you over constantly to their channel. I know DT is not Metallica and that strategy is not as simple as it sounds for "smaller" bands but maybe DT can grab a thing or two from that ideology. The whole concert is gonna end up ripped and uploaded in YouTube by unofficial channels either way. DT SHOULD upload all their live concerts to their YouTube channel so most of the views (and $$) flows directly to them and not the third parties who upload their stuff. For example, if I want to watch something off BTFW, I'll probably just YouTube it (and I have to go through those annoying yellow subtitle videos - which I'm sure we've all have seen at some point - because I'm too lazy to actually play my Blu Ray these days). Every band should counter this by being the first ones to have all their videography up and running in YouTube in optimal quality. That's a way to make money in this day an age of digital consumption.
I'm no expert at these matters, so if anyone is more knowledgeable in this area I would love some enlightenment, but on the other hand as I see it luckily there's always gonna be market for a music/video in a physical medium, even if that market keeps growing smaller every passing day. A good chunk of DT's fan base are die hard prog fans who cherish their CD/DVD/vinyl/cassette collection so much they're going to keep buying stuff DT releases (myself included, although as I stated earlier I'll buy it and watch it from its original medium once or twice and I'll just YouTube the hell out of it afterwards.)
-
Just take a look at what MP is doing with his projects. Just look at all the Neal Morse band live releases. Those projects have a way smaller than what DT could do
-
Marillion just released their video app. DT can go that route as well. But Youtube is where everyone goes so YT would be the better option imo.

I dunno about that. The clips I've heard mostly sounded pretty good.

Yeah. Especially Barstool Warrior which he seems to struggle most at previous shows he sounded amazing to me in London.

Oh, OK. I haven't watched any clips but went based on (I forget who posted it) a remark.
Oddly, I went on youtube last night to specifically look for a performance, but I stumbled upon the HD/IEM Loud Park 2014 show and I watched the entire thing.
-
I'll take the physical copy any day over that streaming/ YouTube compressed crap. So much gets lost in the sound spectrum and you have to deal with commercials. I can't believe people are too lazy to put in a dvd/blu-ray and watch it on a nice HD tv with a big sounding stereo system. That's the whole idea of making these kind of releases in the first place. C'mon people! :corn  :metal

I was wondering with all this downtime due to the pandemic, if this might be a good opportunity for DT to get on the production of the upcoming dvd for perhaps a earlier release. I don't know all the logistics, but it might be a good thing. It would probably sell quite well as this would be a great opportunity to watch it at home. I mean, why wait? Unless it's considered non-essential, I think every DT fan around the globe would love to have this right now. As far as I'm concerned, it's very essential! 🎶 :coolio

me either, but I would guess that some of James' parts need to be re-recorded and some other messups too probably. (see for yourselves, the following are audience recordings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RfBDTb1eAc and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLwFR8R9g_A) This is not meant to be a slight on James (those who know me know I'm not one to put him down)
-
I was thinking about this the other day as well, I hope they put a lot of focus on getting this out sooner than later as a lot of fans will eat it up. However, I also don't know the logistics and if that's even possible.
-
Man, I have been so out of it. I had no idea they were filming a show. I'm looking really forward to seeing some of the DOT songs live. And even if it wasn't James's best night, I imagine they'll do some touch ups (?).
-
I would imagine that, while audio and video production could be done under the present circumstances, physical production of media won't be terribly likely for a little while.

But a lot of bands seem to be releasing albums soonish. My gut would have thought the same thing, but maybe production is often automated enough that the factories can still make it happen? Like I said before, I really have no idea how this works so I'm just thinking aloud.

James is currently building a home studio, so maybe he'll do the touch ups there once it's done?

Apples and oranges given the size of the two bands, but Wardruna, a folk band from Norway which uses a lot of traditional instruments, postponed the release of their album to the next year because the manufacturing suffered from the lockdown. They're famous in the genre but fairly small all things considered, I don't know if DT could not face this as an issue.
