Title: Cyril's Album a Day for February (#29 - Rush)
Post by: Crow on February 01, 2020, 03:32:22 PM
hey i'm gonna do an album-a-day thing this month.

gimme some albums and i'll listen to them

rules or something:
1. recommend me like 3 or so albums in order of recommendation
2. i'll pick the 1st album from everyone who recommends something & then if i run out of those will move onto 2nd albums & 3rd albums if needed
3. no repeat bands. no artists i've rated on RYM (https://rateyourmusic.com/~CyrilPanda). i also reserve the right to reject an album if i've heard it but haven't rated it

this isn't a roulette or anything i'm just looking for recommendations :P
doesn't even have to be to my tastes, but i don't plan to go easy on any album i disliked either
i've crossposted this to a few places so if an album is on this list and you don't see it in this thread it's from somewhere else

These are quite random, just what I’ve enjoyed recently.

Unleash The Archers - Apex
The Music - Strength In Numbers
Beast In Black - From Hell With Love

Beast in Black is one of my favorite recent bands, but I'm going to take a guess here and say Cyril isn't going to like them.

Here's a few recommendations you may or may not like:

Eisley - I'm Only Dreaming (indie rock)
Architects - Lost Forever, Lost Together (metalcore)
Second Person - Come to Dust (trip-hop)
Bohren & der Club of Gore - Piano Nights (dark jazz)

I included 4 because I wanted to break the rules.

He probably won’t like them but, then again, I really shouldn’t like them but I can’t help it. They just put a smile on my face as the songs are so infectious and the singer is an amazing talent.

don't feel obligated to have a third tbh it's very unlikely i'm going to get to the third-round picks & i don't plan to dig into the rest after this (maybe saved for another time if I do this again) so

*Ancients - Star Showers on the Euphrates

this is very... pleasant, to be sure. some post-rock and some ambient. i definitely prefer the ambient here, but i'm weird in that i just like that kind of soundscape specifically. the post-rock isn't bad here but it's kind of standard and not that memorable either. i also don't understand why the album is tracked the way it is - cassiopeia is clearly three separate songs but listed as one gargantuan 24 minute track for no good reason? ehh. it's fine. i enjoyed it as late night music

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - maybe

Out of those 3 honestly Pangaea is the one I like the least but it sounds like something you could like. I absolutely love that Low record but I'm not sure how you feel about atmospheric glitchy/trippy indie music to be honest, also didn't know Puppies hates it :corn and Gold is post-metal-Mew

I was thinking of suggesting Proponents for Sentience instead of Apoptosis so glad someone else did and glad it is being taken up.

Very curious to hear your take on Clutching at Straws, it was no.1 on my top 50 a few years back, and still a strong top 5 album.

The Music - Strength in Numbers

i don't have much to say about this because i just can't enjoy the vocals. i'm not 100% sure what they're going for but it's just a sound i dislike. i don't think i would've been wild about this anyways - some fun grooves here and there and a few hooks that seemed alright but nothing that really particularly caught my ear either. just not for me.

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - no

Danielle Luppi & Parquet Courts - Milano

ooh i don't have a lot i can say i liked about this. for half of this i didn't even realize there was a third name attached to this & so i thought it was like, a split of two incongruent styles, which it still kinda feels like... having said that, i really do not like karen o's voice at all. just ruins every song she's on. flush is particularly bad but i didn't like any of those cuts. the other cuts are okay... i actually kinda dig the closer but it's stylistically completely different than everything else here anyways. i'd maybe listen to an entire album of that. but i can't say the rest did much for me.

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - no

4) Destroyer - Have We Met #MWE

wasn't so sure about this at first but it grew on me towards the end. the man in black's blues was my favorite for sure, but the entire run of the last three tracks i enjoyed a lot. it's got nice, chill vibes to it with a bit of quirkiness but not really pushing to be "weird" specifically. i don't know if i enjoyed all of it, but it did work for me pretty well. might actually look at the lyrics next time though :V

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - yes

5) Eisley - I'm Only Dreaming

i listened to a different eisley album late last year and i mean it in the nicest way when i say that sherri could pass as a taylor swift impersonator, at least vocally. but anyways yeah this is solid indie pop rock type stuff whatever you call it, i've liked some songs in isolation (mr. moon, snowfall off this one) but i'm not particularly convinced by their ability to put together an album that stays compelling for a full 40+ minutes. some weird choices of trap percussion on like two tracks here too which... mmm. wouldn't say it was a bad listen, and it might get another spin from me for having a few tracks i liked, but i wouldn't call it that interesting either.

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - maybe
Title: Re: Cyril's Album a Day for February (#5 - Eisley)

I like most of Eisley's output, but Currents is probably their most well rounded album.

6) Mobius - Kala

indian-tinged djent, which is to say, djent is generally not gonna win me over, but use of prominent female vocals + a decent sense of melodic riffing means it's not super boring or uninteresting either. and the unique flavors on top of that also helped a fair bit, i did enjoy this to some extent even though i was never really "wowed" by it either. it feels a bit short (only 5 full tracks really) and i'd hesitate to call it that "unique" though.

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - maybe

7) Envy - The Fallen Crimson #MWE

ooh yeah I enjoyed this. I do think it pushes a bit long for the genre but the overall sound is nice & lush & melodic but with enough chaotic energy at times and enough intensity to it to stay interesting throughout. would say the opener, hikari, and the closer were my faves on first listen but this is definitely something getting more spins from me, feels like they've really modernized their sound well (granted haven't heard anything between this one and their 2001 album so lol)

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - yes

Yeah that Mobius record isn't something I think I'll be replaying much if at all but the artwork caught my eye, and to be fair it stands out from other djent 'cause of the Indian flavors imo. A curious listen but definitely a 'maybe' relisten for me as well for the end of the year

8) King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Infest the Rats' Nest

thrash metal is the worst subgenre of metal and i will hear no argument to the contrary. i can think of only a small handful of songs in the genre i actually like and have absolutely no use for any album in the style. so suffice to say i did not like this, at all. some of the stoner metal-y parts were not... awful? mars for the rich made me think, for at least a moment, maybe this wasn't going to be all misses, but nothing else really after convinced me otherwise. and i've listened to other king gizzard albums before and i didn't really care for 'em either even if they were in a different style. anyways. if this were even a track or two longer i would've legit just... not finished it, lol

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - no

I actually like this album alright, but the highlight is Superbug for me which isn’t thrash at all and more stoner. Kinda like The Great Chain of Being from their Gumboot Soup album.

Their best albums imo are Polygondwanaland and Nonagon Infinity

Marillion - Clutching At Straws

the time has come yet again for me to please absolutely nobody by saying i didn't mind listening to this but it also didn't do much for me either. not really a fan of the vocal style at all and while the music is generally well-performed i didn't really connect with it on any emotional level either. not as, ahem, flowery as some other neo-prog i've heard but it still had that cheesiness to it, but i mostly just found it kind of dry compared to what i expected

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - no

Wow, everyone connects to different stuff, but Clutching at Straws is one of the more emotionally stirring albums I own. So many great moments both musically and in the way Fish delivers some of the more emotive lines.

“So if you ask me, how do I feel inside.”

“I know that they would rather be/standing here beside me/racing the clouds home.”

“From the realization that all we’ve been offer behind, is to stand like our fathers before us on the firing line.”

“Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars.”

And some of my favorite lyrics just for the word play of it:

“The telltale talking of the last cigarette marking time in the package while the whiskey sweat lies like discarded armor on an unmade bed.”

“Hotel hobbies padding dawn's hollow corridors/A typewriter cackles out a stream of memories/Drying out a conscience, evicting a nightmare/Opening the doors for the dreams to come home.”

Some of it probably has to do with some of the stuff I was dealing with personally when I first got this album, but it almost always moves me when I play it. It’s also in my opinion one of the most memorable guitar performances in rock (both bass and lead). Rothery tears it up and Pete is everywhere.

Brave is easily the best Marillion album imo. Has it’s slightly cheesy moments but much more contemporary than any of their other albums, more in the vein of a Steven Wilson album than over the top prog.

Pangaea - Vespr

i went into this one expecting to really not be into it, so lowered expectations and all, but actually it was... alright? i imagine this is what the contortionist probably sounded like pre-language. some of the same atmospheric stuff but heavier and much more of a -core sound overall. and while yeah there were some parts i thought sucked overall it was more diverse and interesting than i expected. take that for what it is, i guess, i didn't -love- it, but

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - maybe

Lysistrata - Breathe In/Out

hmm my primary gripes with this one are that 1. it doesn't really have a foundational sound and really feels all over the place, though the places it goes are mostly neat and 2. i'm not sold on the vocals, but besides that, this was a pretty solid slice of emo/post-hardcore. i don't know if i loved it on first listen but there were a few tracks i dug a fair bit, it technically is pretty varied even if it does so at the cost of cohesion too, but. yeah, cool stuff

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - yes

12) Earthrise - Eras Lost

if i were listening to this for my own personal enjoyment, i would've stopped halfway through the first song. so it is an accomplishment i made it as deep as the eighth track, i think. at least with the other albums i've really disliked, they had the decency to be relatively short. i could not sit through this, though. it started off real bad, got better for a few tracks, then descended back into the worst kind of chuggy and tuneless post-metal where heaviness is prioritized over everything and all the songs feel like they blend in together. the -core elements mixed in only make it worse too. i really, really did not enjoy this at all

Skein - Of Wings Unfolding

this is like the other side of the coin of the last one, where instead of being mostly post-metal with some -core elements this is -core with some post-metal elements. i think it started out really bad but after the first few tracks was mostly just... fine? i'll be honest at some point i kind of just zoned out with this one, it didn't hold my interest at all. it's a step up from the last album though because aside from the rough start it's mostly pleasant enough.

Izthmi - The Arrows of Our Ways

too many black metal albums out today so the fact that this one stood out to me over all the others i've heard is like, the reason why i'm picking it? good production, felt pretty diverse and still nicely atmospheric and heavy, and while it's not especially unique it doesn't run too long and stayed enjoyable across its entire runtime. so, yeah. solid black metal!

Loathe - I Let It in and It Took Everything

hhmm. i kinda expected this to be not my thing, and in a sense, it was - some of the djentier -core stuff doesn't do it for me - but there was also some heavy stuff here i did like too, so it's not a complete miss in that regards. combined with a number of songs being fairly solid alt-metal type cuts and a general sense of flow throughout, i think after like the first few tracks i was pretty into mostof the rest, even if it didn't blow me away either. i'm still not particularly impressed by this style of low-chugging riffing anyways, but there's good texture to the guitar tone that at least made some of it work. a bit conflicted about this one but i guess, overall pleasantly surprised?

here's my review of the allegaeon album btw:

do they have more than one song? like for real? all i hear is the same song over and over and they inserted some spanish guitar into the second half of one of the songs the one time. i only got halfway through. i tried listening to their album last year and it was also the same song over and over. their vocalist in particular sucks. most boring, flat -core vocals i've heard in ages. why would anyone listen to 72 minutes of this

Mother of Millions - Artifacts

i really don't know what to say about this one, it's bog-standard prog rock/metal of the low technicality high melancholy type. honestly i don't even think it should be labelled prog at all. and anyways it's. fine. nothing about it really stood out to me but i didn't find it unpleasant either. it did feel maybe a tad short? 40 minutes and kind of slow-paced overall so it felt like not much happened. anyways yeah. this existed. it's fine

Slow Motion Reign - Self Titled

i'll preface by saying that this type of rock/album in general isn't for me. it's something i can listen to and enjoy but it doesn't really appeal to me in a way where i'd go back and listen to it again. but for what it is, i did enjoy it a fair bit. i was under the impression this was some kind of prog rock, which it really isn't, it's more early 2000's alt rock than anything. and there are some good songs here. a lot that kind of just passed right by me, but i didn't really dislike anything here either. i dunno. this is an awkward spot where i'm mostly just neutral on the whole thing and in particular this style of vocals isn't really ever going to work for me, but i did like this overall.

Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory

free choice day for me so i picked a highly-rated post-hardcore album off RYM. and i mean. well. yes, i saw the other tags. i don't really actually hear the post-hardcore here but that's fine, it's still solid emo/indie type stuff. did i find it especially engaging or emotionally hard-hitting? no. did i like the vocals? not that much. is it a bit short? yeah. but the instrumentation on a few tracks i did dig, they get into some nice grooves, and it's overall... solid

Alexisonfire - Crisis

this is more up my alley in post-hardcore than what i listened to yesterday lol. admittedly i think the -core screams aren't very good and it's lacking a good album feel to it but the songs themselves are mostly pretty solid. i wouldn't say any of it stood out to me as especially strong on first listen but i did enjoy all of it well enough. don't know if this is going to be something i follow up on but i do wanna spin it at least one more time

Architects - Lost Forever // Lost Together

post-hardcore/metalcore with a bit of a djent edge to it. i've actually listened to holy hell from these guys before which was... alright. mostly listened to it because of its themes. i don't know what this one's themes are but it seems pretty similar to that one, albeit with less synth stuff going on, which i'm fine with. i do think the djent tendencies distract at times and i never found it especially gripping, but as far as -core in this style goes it was otherwise a pretty solid and enjoyable listen, not one i can really complain about to any capacity even if i didn't love it

Also think I should try that Alexisonfire even though I don't line up with this kind of music completely all the time

this took a bit to get its hooks in me but it did get to me eventually and then by At the End of the Night I was pretty damn into it. good screamo/post-hardcore stuff right here, good album flow & good individual songs as well. honestly one of the better albums in the style i've heard in some time due to just overall good pacing and room to breathe between more intense moments, plus a solid level of diversity. pretty much exactly what i'm looking for in the style.

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - yes

i've intentionally restricted all submissions in your roulette to 2019 songs so i can keep my pool of choices narrow

I'll probably end up checking this out cause the album art is really cool and I wanna convince myself to like this enough to buy it on physical format

Gold - Why Aren't You Laughing?

admittedly i wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one, and admittedly i am a bit sidetracked at the moment so this wasn't the most attentive listen, but there's just... a stylistic disconnect on this one for me, i feel like. it's all vaguely pleasant in general and didn't feel like it ran too long (though a few tracks felt a bit sluggish) but nothing ever hit hard or really caught my attention either. i see this is tagged as "gothic rock" and "post-punk" on rym though which, neither are ever really my jam so it probably is just me here. i kind of want to relisten to this in better conditions just to see if i'm missing anything but i don't expect my opinions to change that much either. meh

I have a hard time describing what I like so much about that Gold album. The post-rock/metal side of their sound is honestly very straightforward on its own, I just think the combination with that and almost Mew-like vocals is brilliant, and makes the songs super catchy but also punchy. Wide-Eyed, Why Aren't You Laughing? and Taken By Storm are my focus tracks at the moment.

Halsey - Manic

i can definitely see something in this one, which is more than i was expecting... the entire run from around graveyard or so through 3 AM was all good but without me really does not belong here and sort of killed the momentum of the album for me. not that there weren't any good tracks after but nothing that gripped me as strongly, and it probably has an issue of having too many tracks especially for the runtime. overall i'm still feeling more positive than not on this though

Awooga - Conduit

well stoner metal is pretty much all riffs so i expected that but i also was more into this than i was expecting? there's a... vibe to it, which is kinda of what the genre is all about i'm aware. a mostly consistent sound and not a lot of variety but the riffs are generally solid and the vocals match them well, songs generally don't feel like they drag. i appreciate the change of pace for the closer after the long 11 minute track too, albeit the album runs too short for it to need to be this long? still overall mostly pleased with this one even if the style isn't fully clicking for me. it's enjoyable, though

I stumbled onto Awooga on you tube.  Check out the album cover for the Aipha album. Someone purposely but the music to Conduit with the Alpha album cover.

Tanagra - None of This is Real

ok this is cheating because i'm just using this as an excuse to listen to an album i got in the mail. their album last year i thought was a solid power/prog metal hybrid that i wouldn't have gotten if not for wanting to support the band after their recent (completely bs) lawsuit but i did like the style. this is just straight-up power metal though which has never been my thing and probably never will be. kind of weirdly dated-sounding production on this too. ehh. i don't really think it's bad or anything but if not for the fact that i already own it i wouldn't likely listen to it again

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - uuhhh

the vocals are the cherry on the turd sundae

haven't played the second one yet though, hopefully that's better

i kinda like the second one tbh! it's the reason why i was willing to get the first one

glad the power metal aficionado is here to confirm i'm not really missing much here. i'll prob relisten to it a few more times but meh

Yeah, I really enjoyed Meridiem, guess I don't need to check their first album out now.

What is this about a lawsuit?

Sparta - Wiretap Scars

oh this is some classic, oldies-style post-hardcore (from like 2002). apparently tangentially related to ATDI who i've always been... mild on. and this is kind of in the same vein of being, well, technically post-hardcore but not to what the genre would eventually evolve into that interests me more in general. i like it, absolutely. i think it's a bit one-note and not a lot really stood out on first listen, but i imagine this would grow on me a fair bit if i gave it more spins. i just wish it was more hard-hitting at times but that's just me having a bias for more modern sounds in general, so ehh.

Intronaut - Fluid Existential Inversions

hhhmm this is a weird one. i know i should expect some change in sound given almost 4 years between albums & changing out one of the core band members and all but my issues mostly start with the production and mix, which feel 1. weirdly muddy and not as crisp as their past few, and 2. not as bass-centric as the band normally is, respectively. i did like the songwriting on the whole though i don't think it feels as dynamic as their previous stuff either? i'll definitely have to give it more spins though but my first impression is... admittedly a bit underwhelming, we'll see though

would i relisten? (yes/maybe/no) - again, i have already bought this

Based on the singles I think I should love this. I didn’t like Direction of Last Things much, my favorite Intronaut album by far is Void. But when it comes to their ‘proggy’ albums, it’s looking like I will give this the edge to Direction, gonna spin it now :metardica:

Regarde Les Hommes Tomber - Ascension

not the first album i've heard from these guys but it kind of has a similar feel to their previous one, in that on a sound level they sound pretty good, and there's a nice amount of intensity to their music as well... but i still run into the problem that there's a melodic element that feels lacking, and there isn't much unique personality to their sound either, i would not be able to recognize their music in such a crowded field as ABM. i like this but i don't think it's gonna stick with me

Rush - A Farewell to Kings

on a quest to make absolutely nobody happy i am listening to an album from a band that every prog fan is supposed to know, that i've never been too into. just never been huge on their style or songs, they've always been "alright" though. i picked this album primarily because it's their most well-liked album i've never heard a single song off of, so. it's... well it's rush. it sounds like rush, except the last track which is decently more exciting than the rest, but i can't say much stood out besides that one. again nothing wrong with this band and their talent and influence is undeniable but they just don't make music that sounds like what i want out of music, whether it's their classics or their late-era, more modern albums. it's fine though.
