Which band is more beloved on this board?
I prefer Tool by far.
-
What?
Why are you even comparing these two bands?
-
I'm going to say Tool, but that's only because I didn't even know about Porcupine Tree until a few years ago and haven't made much of an effort to explore the music, whereas I have known about Tool since I was a teen. However, I'm a casual fan at best.
-
Porcupine Tree easily, though this is kind of an unfair comparison given Porcupine Tree has double the amount of albums Tool has.

Pretty much this. Though if you had to force me to pick between Tool's 5 studio albums and my 5 favorite PT albums, it might be a bit harder to choose, but I might still lean towards PT.
-Marc.

A few years ago I would easily have said PT, now I think I might lean towards Tool. For me PT has a great discography but the more music I've discovered since my original PT phase, the less special their music feels. They have a lot of strong 8/10 (or around that area) albums but I don't think any of their albums would make my top50.

Lol, my first thought was 'both?'

Tool.
Would the name of thread have been "Tool vs. SW", it would have been more difficult for me.
-
Tool gives me headaches.
-
I'd take my least favorite PT over Tool. Hell, I'd take Bananarama over Tool. I'd even take Achy Breaky Heart on an hour loop over Tool.

Ouch! I get the feeling you're not much of a Tool fan. :rollin

But Signify
I really like Signify a lot and it is one of their best for me but some songs do feel like filler and ultimately I don't think enough songs are in the "top tier" like Dark Matter for me to consider it an amazing album all the way through. It is great though.

I used to love FOABP a lot but it hasn't aged well, particularly the lyrics and the vocals. Musically it's a great album but the rest is definitely a knock on it IMO.

That's fair, though the only lyrics that make me go "yikes" show up on the title track and the middle of Anesthetize - the rest is fine.
-
Strange match up, but Tool, easily.

One of these bands knew when to stop.
The other released a mediocre album last year.
-
I'd take my least favorite PT over Tool. Hell, I'd take Bananarama over Tool. I'd even take Achy Breaky Heart on an hour loop over Tool.
Well, man, this is one of the hottest takes on this board ever.

I f$#&ing hate Tool, is that hotter? :lol I can't overstate how much I don't like them...
-
Maybe you're the Tool :neverusethis:
They're kinda meh tho. Lateralus is good, half of 10,000 days is good, they have a few scattered good songs besides but meh
-
Slipknot fans call themselves maggots, Lady Gaga's fans are lil monsters, what do Tool fans call themselves? Wrenches?
-
One of these bands knew when to stop.
The other released a mediocre album last year.
-
I only know some songs by Tool, so.. PT.
-
One of these bands I wish was still making music.
The other released my album of the year last year.
-
Why are you even comparing these two bands?
Also this.
Yeah....
I'd take my least favorite PT over Tool. Hell, I'd take Bananarama over Tool. I'd even take Achy Breaky Heart on an hour loop over Tool.
LoLWUT!
At least I know what to send you once you finally start your next roulette :corn

Really, Porcupine Tree went one album too far. The Incident was pretty mediocre.
Also Fear Inoculum is awesome and you are crazy
-
Ok I'll join in
One band stopped playing and I'm happy about it.
The other one released the best album of the year last year.
-

This is funny to me because I'd take Fear Inoculum over most (if not all) PT albums. :lol
Meanwhile The Incident is easily one of the weakest PT albums.
-
Fear Inoculum and The Incident are on almost exactly the same level of quality, imo.
They're both.............okay I guess.
-
Yeah - first reaction is simply "why?".
Since I only like the odd Tool song, and even then sometimes struggle to get to the end of the song before wanting to hear something with a soaring melody, my vote's always going to go to Porcupine Tree here, but still... why?
-
This comparison is fucking weird.
But I would pick Porcupine Tree over Tool, I guess.

You're banned from participating :neverusethis:

Not picking sides or anything... but what is the problem in comparing these two bands? It is not like there haven't been such topics before... "this band or this band, which one do you like most?", even when the bands are from totally different genres.
-

Why compare these two?
Why even discuss about music in the first place? Why make the effort?
Because it's fun
-
I love both bands. My complaint against each would be the tendency to have some filler on their albums. I do find myself skipping tracks in Porcupine Tree albums a bit more than I do on Tool albums.
I would rank each bands latest release as good with wonderful moments but weaker than their previous output.
So Tool for me I suppose.
-
To be clear I cite the incident as "knowing when to stop" because that looked like the first notable downturn for the band and they immediately jumped ship
To be clear I have barely listened to the incident, also. Only PT besides like the first two that I don't own :P
-
One of these bands knew when to stop.

I didn't know PT released an album last year.
-
Never really been fussed about either band, but there's definitely more that I like in Tool's catalogue than there is in PT's.
-
While I like Tool, their core sound is kind of limited, their albums suffer from being filled to the max with all those interludes, and although they have songs like Wings for Marie, I feel that PT's music is more emotionally charged on the whole, and the bigger emphasis on melody instead of rhythm appeals to me more as well.
-
Both have some stuff I like, both have some things about them I dislike. I rarely listen to either these days. The Stupid Dream through In Absentia run is genuinely pretty great though.

That's exactly how I feel about Steven Wilson. "I'm your Venus, I'm your fire...."
