Name one or more. But only BANDS, not solo acts!
I'm going with: Voivod, Triumph and Godspeed You Black Emperor.
-
Hmmm, other Canadian bands other than Rush? Shoot, I don't know that many other ones.
I guess I will say Nickelback (somewhat unironically). They do have some good tunes. I would say Three Days Grace, but they are not the same anymore without Adam Gontier.
-
The Agonist.
I’d say Devin Townsend but who knows how he qualifies.
Into Eternity.
-
Big Wreck
Tragically Hip
I Mother Earth
-
The only Canadian band I have in my collection other than Rush is one album by Mystery, Lies and Butterflies.
-
I Mother Earth
Our Lady Peace
Honeymoon Suite
Sarah McLachlan
Alannis Morissette
Triumph
Mystery
Lawrence Gowan
Saga
-
In random order:
The Tragically Hip
Harmonium
Offenbach
Mystery
Okoumé
Les Cowboys Fringants
Les Trois Accords
Les Colocs
-
It's gotta be Mystery.
-
Big Wreck
Tragically Hip
I Mother Earth
Fudge, I knew I forgot one band. I will go with Big Wreck as well as my favorite Canadian band outside of Rush.
-
Definitely Triumph for me.
-
Triumph
Anciients
Incura
Pyramid Theorem
Mystery
-
Voivod
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Harmonium
Into Eternity
Gorguts
Cryptopsy
Annihilator
Arcade Fire
Preoccupations/Viet Cong
Skinny Puppy
-
There are other Canadian bands besides Rush?
jk. Like 20 years ago I would have said Sum 41. xD
-
Definitely Voivod. These guys have had a HUGE impact on my perception of what is musically viable or desirable. They've gone through many phases of their sound but have always put out something unique and interesting. The last album "The Wake" is absolutely killer. An amazing piece of work.
-
Devin Townsend Band/Project
Unleash The Archers (as long as you only include their last album!)
-
James Labrie.
-
Bands, not solo artists. I suppose you could get away with Mullmuzzler though!
-
Considering some of what's been listed, I'd say James Labrie is a perfectly fine answer.
-
Godspeed You! Black Emperor would be my favorite by a mile. Neil Young is also someone I rate highly but considering it says bands I wouldn't say it's a fair mention even if you include Crazy Horse.
-
Saga and Triumph
-
Blood Ceremony
Also, if I can cheat, James LaBrie as a solo artist.
-
Voivod
Devin Townsend
Joni Mitchell (Solo act, who cares)
Gorguts
Spaced Out
Harmonium
Strapping Young Lad
Beyond Creation
Sloche
Maneige
The Tea Party
Opus 5
Miriodor
Cryptopsy
-
Strapping Young Lad
Of course.
-
Rheas Obsession.
-
Definitely Triumph for me.
Same.
The only other Canadian BANDS I know (excluding solo artists) are
Nickelback -- I bought the album with How You Remind me and really like that song. I don't dislike the rest of it, but it never clicked with me.
Saga -- Only really know On the Loose, which got heavy play in the early days of MTV. I've recently read some stuff that makes me want to dive into their catalog, but that hasn't happened yet.
Barenaked Ladies -- Their theme song for Big Bang Theory was really good, but I don't know anything else.
Maybe there are a couple others, but I can't think of them.

If you want to get into Saga, I suggest you'll start with their first 5 studio album and In Transit (that's a live album and the first fully digital recording ever)
-
Harem Scarem
Killer Dwarfs
Coney Hatch
Jeff Healey band
Saga
Big House
Sword
Annihilator
Borealis
-
Triumph
Helix
Killer Dwarfs
Sword
Coney Hatch
Saga
Streetheart
Harlequin
Queen City Kids
Harem Scarem
Sebastian Bach
April Wine
Loverboy
Honeymoon Suite
Aldo Nova
Also should add even though I only know one song from them, Payolas Eyes of a Stranger is an awesome tune
-
Bands, not solo artists. I suppose you could get away with Mullmuzzler though!
It's basically a band with the same members and songwriters across a few albums. I'll let Wildranger pull me up if it's not allowed. ;D
Although, The Tea Party would actually get my vote. Harem Scarem a good one too.
-
Neck of the Woods probably, there’s too many bands I don’t know the country of origin of though
-
Triumph
Harem Scarem
Killer Dwarfs
Annihilator
-
I Mother Earth
Our Lady Peace
Honeymoon Suite
Sarah McLachlan
Alannis Morissette
Triumph
Mystery
Lawrence Gowan
Saga
I can always rely on you. Our Lady Peace. It's a crime, if you ask me, that there's only one mention of this band here.
Starseed.
I need to get into Saga, it seems.

I'm sure Chad and myself can attest, If you listened to Canadian rock radio in the mid 90's, you are extremely familiar with Our Lady Peace. Their first album was very good but I found things changed with their second album and they were clearly going for a mainstream radio sound. I would say that the song Supermans Dead was probably the most played song on the radio and Much Music in 1997. I'm not sure how big it was outside of Canada, but it was huge here. Speaking of Canadian rock, I should also mention in 1997 I saw Big Wreck play in a small bar. The opening band, in front of maybe 50 people was Nickelback. This was about 6 months before they made it huge.
-
Not sure how many 'bands' I can rhyme off that anyone (other than jj and possibly Brent) would know that haven't already been mentioned. Rockhead was one I loved, but only had 1 album. Here's the rest... mostly of a 'classic rock' ilk.
54-40
Chilliwack
Sven Gali
BTO
Glass Tiger
The Guess Who
Max Webster
Steppenwolf
Trooper
Solo artists:
Bryan Adams
Burton Cummings
David Wilcox
Kim Mitchell
Lee Aaron
Sass Jordan
Tom Cochrane
There's more, but those are from the A-list that some might know.
-
Blessed By A Broken Heart. :metal :metal :metal
-
Try playing David Wilcox "Layin Pipe" a couple of times and not have that song stuck in your head. One of the best subliminal sexual songs ever lol. I forgot to mention Trooper, Boys in the Bright White Sports Car is such an awesome rock song. Ironically a Canadian band that I wasn't familiar with until hearing a song in the last few weeks is a band called Haywire. I'm sure Chad or Brent have heard of them but I wasn't familiar with them.

When the guitarist left is when they went more mainstream. Still enjoyed them.
Spiritual Machines has a special place in my heart. I was in the middle of chemo treatments when my friend took me to see them in Boston.
-
Raine started singing a little more straight-forward too; was that Gravity?
-
Yes it was.
-
Since we seem to be listing every Canadian band we can think of :lol I’m just going to list a few that haven't been mentioned.
Anvil
Kick Axe
Razor
Exciter
City and Colour
Matthew Good Band
Prism
Red Rider
Headpins
-
Wow, one band I like. Lol

Good call on Anvil and especially Kick Axe. Great classic metal. Also Headpins is a great band and the ex lead singer, Darby Mills, is one of the best female singers I’ve ever heard. To me she is in the same level as Stevie Nicks. Speaking of female singers, the metal queen should be mentioned, Lee Aaron!

It is.

As Lonestar mentioned:
Pyramid Thereom - huge Rush fans that referenced them in the video for the single Drive
Anciients - Great prof metal band with a third album due out sometime this year

Some of them are certainly obscure, but others I know many around here know, although I'm surprised to not see some of them mentioned already like Protest the Hero and The Tea Party.
-
I’ve seen The Tea Party live a couple times and they are great. First album is where it’s at, “The River” and “A Certain Slant of Light” are outstanding, a major Doors vibe
-
All is previously listed but these are the ones off the top of my head:
Anything Devin Townsend
Big Wreck
Protest The Hero
Anciients
The Tea Party
I Mother Earth
-

yeah I love the early records (as well as many of their others). And you're right, Jeff Martin has a very big Jim Morrison element to his voice, but in a good way.
I wish i could claim to have seen them live as well, but they don't tour the States sadly. Maybe due to cost of Work Visa's? They do play in Australia regularly though.
-
Justin Bieber
No, not really. Couldn't name a single song of his.
As for favorite band, I would have to go Voivod. No question on that.
Solo, always loved Alanis. Also, Nelly Furtado before she sold out.

I have extensive knowledge when it comes to Canadian rock bands on the radio and Much Music (Canada’s MTV). The Tea Party, Our Lady Peace, Moist and I Mother Earth were probably the four big rock bands in Canada in the 90s. I’ve seen them all live and I can say in my opinion that all bands debut album were their best release
-
Jebus, I'm seeing a lot of shoutouts to Our Lady Peace and the only thing I know them from was that they did Chris Benoit's theme song, Whatever. Great song, very intensive which suited the wrestler that Benoit was. Sadly, they will not play it live for obvious reasons if you know the history of Benoit. I did see them last year opening for Bush and Live. They put an ok set for 30 minutes, even though I was unfamiliar with their material and that the sun was in my eyes the entire set (the only time in like 9 outdoor shows I've been to last year where the sun was in my eyes watching a set).

"Whatever" is, uh, whatever. For me, the first two (maybe three) records are where it's at. 4AM is a phenomenal song, as is the aforementioned "Starseed".
EDIT: Oh, and I love the song "U Smile" by Justin Bieber. Great tune.
-
I can go deep into Canadian rock radio and bring up bands like Pluto, Age of Electric, Limblifter, Rusty and Sandbox (Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys was the guitarist). But likely nobody will know what I’m talking about.
But honestly when it’s all said and done, Rush is the greatest Canadian band hands down. Only Chad can compete with me when it comes to Canadian rock radio listening on this forum but there is no question he will agree with me.
Rush is the best :metal
-
The Tea Party
This.
-
So this thread is now an encyclopedia of every Canadian band ever, right?

The Tea Party
-
Kick Axe
Wow, it took 40 posts to get to this?
I think I'm going to have to listen to their first album RIGHT NOW.
-
has anyone mentioned The Tea Party yet?
-
Hath, literally two posts above you!l
-
Big fan of The Tea Party.
-
Two pages and no mention of PUP? Unacceptable.

These guys are, IMO, the best modern punk or rock band working today. Their album Morbid Stuff is fantastic.
-
Big fan of The Tea Party.
Yeah we really showed those Brits!

Hath, literally two posts above you!l
yeah, it seemed like every other post there for a bit so I decided to jump on the bandwagon. ;D
-
Jokes on me...again! :lol
-
I mother earth
Our Lady Peace
Thornley
-
I haven't seen him mentioned here (apologies if I missed it), but Matthew Good is not only my favorite Canadian artist, but he is hands down my favorite musician.
I consider his album Lights Of Endangered Species to be my favorite album of all time...such a masterpiece.

He has some excellent albums, though I’m not familiar with the one you mentioned.
-
I'm from the UK but there was a period in the late 90's to 10's when there just seemed to be a ton of very talented Canadian acts.
Tragically Hip
Our Lady Peace.
Arcade Fire
Wolf Parade.
STARS
New Pornographers.
Destroyer
Broken Social Scene
The Arkells
Wintersleep
The Besnard Lakes
Metric
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
I was very much in a Indie phase at this point!
-
Hath, literally two posts above you!l

Hath and I have the same sense of humor, it seems. I've never actually heard their music, myself, despite my post. :)
-
For those who never have listened to Neverending White Lights, given they aka Daniel Victor is Canadian himself, many Canadian artists have also been featured on their albums.
Our Lady Peace and City and Colour/Dallas Green, and Evan Konrad/Bed of Stars for example.
their next record, which may come relatively soon (it's been more than 8 years since the last one), very well may include appearances from Matthew Good and The Tea Party among others.
also for the College (Indie) fans, there is a documentary about Bend Sinister and other Canadian bands. Mostly their and other bands (financial) struggles, while trying to tour in Canada.
The whole thing is about an hour, and is in 5 parts/videos on YouTube

Three pages and not one mention of NoMeansNo, that band of brilliant proggy punks? For shame!
Rounding out my top 5 are Voïvod, Joni Mitchell (solo, but deserves the mention) and Annihilator.
-
Danko Jones, pretty good band but I can't say i'm a big listener. The other bands I know have already been mentioned.
-
Loverboy
;D
Seriously though, it's Triumph. But that being said, I actually ADORE Loverboy's first 4 albums.
-

Loverboy is awesome
-
Don’t understand why they are not on the same level as Journey.
I mean ya, Neil Schon is definitely 10 times the guitarist that Paul Dean is...but I don’t think the general public bases their opinions on who the better guitarist is. The “catchy arena rock” quality of those first few Loverboy albums is IMO of equal quality to Journey’s most polished (and well established) work.
EDIT - actually I’m going to double back a tad based on the Steve Perry component. But again, I think people who listen to jukeboxes in bars aren’t putting a lot of thought into who the better singer is. They only care about what they can sing along to. And to those people, “Working for the Weekend” is not far away from “Don’t Stop Believing”
-
I should've listened to more Loverboy than I have as I always really rated Mike Reno - I even have his early 2000s solo album Renovation.
In terms of raw talent he's not quite there with Perry/Gramm etc...........but for mine he's right up there with most others in that genre.
-
Martyr. Top-notch technical death metal.
-
I think Loverboy is WAY underrated. Sure enough, Reno and Dean aren't at the technical level of Perry and Schon, but if I was in the garage working on my car, or driving down the road in the summer with the window down, Turn Me Loose is every bit as fun as Stone In Love.
-
Saints and Sinners Tour 2020
The Tea Party + Big Wreck along with Headstones and Moist
I would like to see this tour if you took out Headstones and Moist and added I Mother Earth and say Bend Sinister?

Martyr. Top-notch technical death metal.
agreed. A LOT MORE people on this forum would probably like them if they heard them.
Feeding the Abscess is a stone cold classic.
-
"Triumph" for sure!
Rik Emmett is like the Geddy Lee of guitar. Plays complex music and sings in a similar register and also plays some keys. Gil Moore is a excellent drummer and Mike Levine a great bass player. So many great songs.
I Wish they would have stood the test of time a bit longer than their hey-day.
-

All of this.
For all the talent debate...pound for pound...Loverboy wrote an equal level and quality of singalong arena rock anthems as Journey. The first 4 albums are pretty much front to back fun “butt rock”
-
With the title, ‘other than Rush’, I’m surprised no one mentioned Mahogany Rush. For all you guitarists out there, Frank Marino was damn good. Check out some of their concert footage on youtube. Though they made a name for themselves, they never quite made it up to the upper echelon.
They were the warm up band for Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Queen (Sheer Heart Attack tour), Styx (Pieces of Eight tour…saw both), and performed at California Jam II.
The Guess Who. Their first ‘greatest hits’ is so 60s/early 70s, but really damn good. I’ve often imagined a young Burton Cummings singing Dream Theater tunes. The man had some pipes.
(my track listing These Eyes / Laughing / No Time / American Woman / Sugar Tonight/ New Mother Nature / Three More Days * Side Two Star Baby * / Broken * / Sour Suite * / Hand Me Down World / Bus Rider / Share The Land /
Do You Miss Me Darlin' / Hang On To Your Life [LP version] * my bonus tracks
Bachman Turner Overdrive had some pretty good tracks in the 70s….You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet, Roll Down The Highway, Sledgehammer….the overplayed to death by garage bands ‘Takin Care of Business’, and Bryan Adams for solo acts.
And, of course, Triumph (or ‘Rush Junior’ as we called them). I really enjoyed them, and I saw them at Joe Louis Arena on a spur of the moment deal in ’85. Damn good show.
Trivial: I googled ‘top Canadian acts’, and one site listed ‘Heart’. I’m like WTF? Seems a band member scooted out the back door as Federal agents were at the front to get him for dodging the draft. The band then spent their early days in Vancouver.
'Butt rock'....never heard that term before, and, thank you google. :D

Apart from a few of the hits they did nothing for me. Great singer and guitarist though. I enjoyed Paul Dean’s solo album Hard Core - I have that on vinyl.

Always frustrating when a killer singer is in a band where the songs don't cut it for you.
-
I mean, I guess Triumph.
-
Don’t understand why they [Loverboy] are not on the same level as Journey.
Don't shoot the messenger, but I would say that the covers of Loverboy's first two albums tell at least part of the story.... I certainly had no interest after the initial success of Working for the Weekend.
-
It was weird that their popularity waned off around Wildslide. Not sure why.

BTO were my first "favorite" band in 1975 when I was 11/12. I played the hell out of the albums BTO II, Not Fragile, and Four Wheel Drive.
They still hold a special place in my heart.

You don't like the leather pants? :) You just hope they don't pull a "Phil Collins" and update their covers:

Never really cared for Loverboy. Their hits never really resonated with me, seeming insipid and cliche, so I never had any desire to delve any deeper.
I'm not saying that they suck; I just don't care about them one way or the other.

Who is THAT?

As long as you wear a headband, you are cool in my book.

No parking.

No parking.
Well, certainly no backing in.
-
Fun fact though (and you can look this up)...the cover of Loverboy’s “Get Lucky” does have a male hand on it (no one can seem to remember if it’s Reno’s hand or not) but that ass is a female model.
So if they do a Collins style reissue, it would depend on how well that model stayed in shape.

No parking unless you are cool and wearing a headband.

I definitely had the first two Loverboy albums.

Obviously Working for the Weekend is awesome, but you can't deny the awesomeness of Loving Every Minute of It, Turn Me Loose, or When It's Over. If you don't know those tunes, check them out and crank them.

Headbands around the world will definitely disagree with you

I can maybe see not digging all the Loverboy tracks.
But there is one Canadian song that is one of my all time favorite songs overall and not even TAC can deny the awesomeness of it. It's real and spectacular. I can play it over and over again without ever getting tired of it.
April Wine- Sign of the Gypsy Queen

Growlies..................but 5 Wooo! rating for the pics in the booklet.

I will add that three of my favorite songs of all time (out of the thousands upon thousands that I've heard) are Canadian
-Rush- Subdivisions
-Triumph- Fight the Good Fight

If it's growlies I will pass. Hammers and skin tight leather pants on women will still never override my dislike for freakin growlies.

The Kid Is Hot Tonite is a very good song.

Anciients - Great prof metal band with a third album due out sometime this year
Dear lord I hope so, Voice of the Void was so fucking good.

You keep writing the things I want to write before I have a chance to write them!

I remember that song being all over the place the first 6-12 months I had MTV, and then I never really heard much of anything by or about that band after that.

Apparently, there is a "Bottom by T.K." credit in the liner notes, and this article ( https://ultimateclassicrock.com/loverboy-get-lucky-cover/ ) says T.K. was a then 13yo girl named Tymara Kennedy, who was the photographer's daughter. The article goes on to say that she was killed in a car accident ten years later.

Where do you even START with that story? I guess you don't, other than RIP. But I feel just as queasy realizing I've been looking at a 13-year-old's ass all these years as I used to feel knowing I was looking at Mike Reno's ass. :)

I call that the "Traci Lords" feeling.

3 Our Fathers & 3 Hail Mary for knowing this.

I think I assumed it was Reno anyway, so I never spent any time staring at it.
I'm clean! :lol

I got to see April Wine live at a casino in my small home town in Washington State. They were amazing! I can't believe I forgot to mention them earlier in this thread.

for me, Bend Sinister and Pyramid Theorem are where it's at. I've seen Bend 9 times, including 3 straight nights in 3 different cities afew years back. Lead man Dan is probably my favorite song qriter as far as putting a vocal melody to chord progression, riff, pr melody. And Pyramid Theorem are my 2017 AlbumOfTheYear, so of course i gotta share some love.
The band i like but haven't seen mentioned is Sparky. Sorry Into Eternity, but Sparky's Humanination is the neatest metal album to ever come out of our province. Try track 2 Falcon if you want a fun Tool-esque fix.

my personal fav's:
Max Webster - A Million Vacations (love that entire album to death)
Kim Mitchell - I Am A Wild Party, We Are In Rockland Wonderland
Triumph - Never Surrender, Thunder Seven, Allied Forces (the masterpiece)
Prism - Spaceship Superstar
Saga - 1st 6 albums all are masterpieces
Mystery - The World Is A Game (Pride: the guitar solo :metal so melodic)
Transcend - The Mind (double concept album released in 2011, comparable to DT, they are from Montreal)
Randy Bachman (BTO) - still an amazing guitarist in any style
and of course Pyramid Theorem

I'm amazed (and appalled) that nobody has mentioned Pat Travers yet. Snorting Whisky was still being played on Canadian radio when I visited in 2002. Pat has made some fine hard/blues rock albums in his time and has been mentioned as one of Alex Lifeson's favourite guitarsts.
-
I've asked this before, maybe even in this thread, but where's a good place to start with Saga? I know (and like) the couple of songs that got MTV airtime back in the day (that would be early- to mid-80's). Is there a decent compilation that would cover me as I get my feet wet?

It probably still gets played on U.S. radio, but it's also one of the dumbest songs I have ever heard, and I can't think of a single other song by him.
Pat . . . has been mentioned as one of Alex Lifeson's favourite guitarsts.
I don't think Alex posts here, though.

I asked the same thing somewhere, and I recall being told to go chronologically. There's also a compilation album called The Works that was released in 1991. I haven't checked any of it out yet.

Sum 41 easily.
