Title: THE John Petrucci thread
Post by: MarkFitDT on November 15, 2019, 11:56:48 AM
EDIT from bosk1:

I ran across the video below, and in getting ready to post it, noted that there isn't really a dedicated JP thread.  So here you go.  I know he is obviously discussed in several threads.  But anything random relating to JP can go here if it doesn't fit somewhere else.

JP receiving the Sena Performers European Guitar Award this year plus a couple of his solo songs and an Allman Brothers song live with Rena :-

The BEST thing I'll watch today! Thank you for that.

Edit: Also, proof positive that JP sounds even better with a rhythm guitarist!

Having another guitarist there is cool, because the studio album has all those extra guitar parts, but the keyboards were a bit high on the mix for me.

Btw, I'm not into Epica and I'm not familiar with their members, other than Simone Simons, but I read on the comments that some of the backing band are Epica members? That's cool :metal

This was a great video, really enjoyable watch. Not sure if it would be economically viable, but I'd LOVE to see a JP solo tour in small club type venues with a full band like this.

Anyhow, great video interview with live footage from the SEGA European Guitar Award show from November 2019:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IoF5U691gQ

In addition to the interview footage, he plays Glasgow Kiss, Lost Without You, and a guitar duel with his wife Rena Sands in the song "Jessica" from The Allman Brothers.

EDIT:  AND I REALLY HOPE JP TAKES NOTE FROM THIS PERFORMANCE THAT HIS PLAYING SOUNDS EVEN MORE AMAZING WHEN HE HAS ACCOMPANIMENT FROM A BACKUP GUITARIST!  IT'S ABOUT TIME!

Thanks, TAC.  I didn't realize that thread existed.  I'll just merge them and let this be the NEW JP thread.  :tup

I love how on the Allman cover, there are several times where JP and Rena look at each other, and I can imagine them saying:
Rena:  Yeah, you may be an amazing player, but you only sound that good because I taught you that lick!
JP:  Yeah, well, you may be an amazing player, but your tone only sounds that good because you're playing one of my new signature guitars!

Now that this is THE JP thread and now that Bosk has joined the conversation, we need you to ask him (if you can, of course) if he ever plans to record his second solo album. He's previously said he has all the music written, but it's just sitting there waiting to be recorded (and it has been since around 2010). His solo stuff is just too good to be left with only one album out, and now that Tool finally released a new one, I'm hopeful JP will follow the same path :lol

I think IO seem to be more open towards that as a record company. There may be a chance I would guess. But what am I to know. Would I welcome it? Yes, but on the condition of having James take ONE role only (Nafaryus preferably) and have other singers take the other ones.

This would be really cool, but it's not happening. They already announced they are recording the London shows in Feb. and these shows are advertised as D/T  - SFAM tour, not something else, and I really really doubt they'd record two different things for different live releases in the same time period (unless they released them as one big package with TA live + D/T - SFAM live, but it's a stretch).

Listened to SA again and damn is a ripper of an album.  Not much on there that's not to like.  Tunnel Vision the only one I didn't really connect with on first listen.  Love the tones and the production too.  Would love a copy of this on cd.  Can't believe I haven't given this album much attention until now.

That middle solo of Glassgow Kiss is one of his finest moments, no doubt.  The final solo in the last song too Animate, is one of the most creative things he's done also.

One of my favorite moments of SA is the rocking middle section of the Damage Control. That bass solo, those riffs and just everything from that middle section.

Quote from article: "We’re especially excited because the scholarship is limited to instruments that we play — guitar, bass, keys and voice"

Knowing that MP went there when the band was formed, and knowing that MM used to teach there, why wouldn't they include drums in the scholarship? Did I miss something?

That all said - very cool of the guys to be doing this for students! Kudos!

That's pretty cool.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if drummers are also included, and JP perhaps just misspoke.  Especially given how Mangini also commented in the article.

I just saw JP updates his website, I like the new look.

Also, the new Majesty finish (Smoked Pearl) looks sick.

I just recently listen to DT's discography, JP's work on the earlier albums, including WDADU, were so tasty and original. His work after SDOIT is still great, and some of his best work came after that album, but there is just some magic to those early albums.

I can’t either. That’s why I sold the Mark IV (which was in mint condition still with inspection tags).

But I know they are going to discontinue the JP-2C eventually and if I miss out, I’m going to be one unhappy camper. Petrucci is my favorite guitarist and I love the Boogie Mark series, so I MUST HAVE THIS AMP.

Even Kiko Loureiro who is an amazing guitar player with a great sense of melody fell a little bit into the chugga chugga realm on an 8 string for his latest solo album, so I'm really hoping JP/DT doesn't.

I'm sure that when DT recorded Awake 26 years ago, people said that too about him using a 7-string. And then out came The Mirror and everyone loved it.

Na, apples and oranges, when the 7 came out "real" players were experimenting with it and what i can do, but that was 26 years ago when 7s were rare.  Now everyone and their Youtube shred-dog can have an 8 and they all end up just chugging along.  It'll sound just like every other player with an 8.  We'll see.

I can see him doing some interesting rhythm stuff with an 8-string, I just hope he doesn't fall into a "chugging" hole.

I guess that's my biggest objection to using an 8.  It's so difficult to have any separation in the low notes that even when you're playing different ones it's they mostly sound the same unless you're playing notes at least 3 frets away from each other.

However, if there's anyone around that I have hope for NOT being a chuggernaut, it's JP.

My other objection is what happens to the bass?  What's the point of even having a bass player if you're guitars are playing that low (eg. Animals as Leaders)?

Logically speaking, JM would then have to use more of the upper range of his 6 string basses, I might be wrong though. (I had this concept in mind when I thought about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_crossing, it's a Bach thing amongst others)

Listen to both SA and TV this morning. Wondered how I would rank each song from both albums combined and here is what I came up with. 1-3 was really easy to pick, 4-14 was difficult because I think all those piece are good. #14 could've easily been a top 7. #4 could've easily been drop to #10 or lower. But as of right now, this is what I got.

1)   Glassgow Kiss
2)   Happy Song
3)   Gemini
4)   Damage Control
5)   Glassy-Eyed Zombies
6)   Lost Without You
7)   Snake In My Boot
8)   Terminal Velocity
9)   Tunnel Vision
10)   Animate-Inanimate
11)   Out of the Blue (reminds me a lot of "Tender Surrender" by Steve Vai)
12)   Jaws of Life
13)   The Oddfather (Reminds me of Lost Not Forgotten)
14)   Temple of Circadia (The Dark Eternal Night meets Fall Into The Light)
15)   Curve
16)   The way things fall
17)   Wishful Thinking

Hasn't JP already floated the idea of an 8-string around before D/T? I seem to be misremembering this, but anyway. If he wants one, it's because he wants to do some of the stuff that's already done with those, in his own way. Whatever his own way is remains to be seen but if you have an opposition to this I don't know if he's able to do enough things differently to change your mind.

So JP might use an 8-string for the next DT album? Which he confirmed they will start working on it in the fall.

Hasn't he said things like that for the last several albums?

I will believe it when I see it.

IIRC, he mentioned of there being a talk about an 8-string guitar but never confirmed they were working on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF39uABIQk4&feature=emb_title

Around 8:45 of that video, he mentioned he has thought about it and probably will develop one. years later he alluded to talking with Ernie Ball about design and how to go about an 8 string guitar. But I think now he said they are working on it already, but I might be wrong.

A question for all Petrucci enthusiasts! :)

In Rock Discipline when John is showing his rig and guitars, he has this red-coloured ibanez.
Does anyone know what the model is? Any pics of the guitar?

Some Majesty's are less expensive... especially when you purchase from a forum member   Nothin' but love for Victor; I know Copper has a good home and is being exercised regularly.

Wonder what Mesa thinks of this?  Honestly, from my single DSP experience, I don't see why JP and Maddy can't load JP's entire rig/set-up catalog in the DSP and tote the thing on tour with a 1x12 cab and mic it into the PA system of the venue.  Think about how much easier/cheaper travel would be for JP... and JMX as well if he chose to work with Neural.  With the quality of solid state and plugin type system amps improving at a parabolic rate, boutique amp companies may be in for a shock in the next few years.

I've though long and hard about replacing my rig with a Neural DSP and calling it a day.  It's a tough decision tho... love my PRS MT and my Positive Grid.

Love the song too... must be a cut from TV that didn't make the album.

JP seems to only put his stamp on quality items... the Beard Oil is honestly different than any other oil I've used or made for myself (tight cranberry, leather, and spice smell that does last), picks, straps, and guitars are all a cut above the rest, PUPs are incredible... take your pick.  I'm on the list for the Whiskey if there's another run of it... I'm sure it's quality.  As someone else said... he has an appreciation for multiple income streams and he truly is a Brand.  Personally, I'm very happy for and proud of JP!

Meh, minority priorities. I'll bet either of you would pay $5,400 for something that would baffle me, and I know for sure I have spent that much on something you all would find crazy. It was very very nice!  I didn't play it, but got to touch and feel it when I was in the store, and it's a beautiful instrument for sure.  But yeah, I wouldn't pay that much.  They had a few other JP Majesty guitars there in the $3,000 range (not sure what all the differences were to account for the difference in price) - but I'd probably go that way if I was ever serious about picking one up.

There is no way I would ever pay that.

Meh, minority priorities. I'll bet either of you would pay $5,400 for something that would baffle me, and I know for sure I have spent that much on something you all would find crazy. I think it's a beautiful instrument and it's probably worth every penny to the right player. EB wouldn't make them if they couldn't sell them.

I read somewhere that one of those Majesty guitars (no idea which version) is MusicMang's best selling guitar. I'm pretty sure it was one of the more expensive ones too.

Edit: I think I read this on this forum or perhaps even in this thread.

Besides a big ticket item like a car, I have never spent that amount on one single thing.

The Hydrospace finish is one of these small batch runs that EBMM sometimes does with the JP models. They might only put out one or two hundred of them and they usually have a distinct finish and use the higher end woods they they have access to.

Is that really how much it was? That's fucked.

I haven't seen the exact stats, but I believe it's that the Petrucci line of signature models (which would include the Majesty, the older signature models, and maybe also the budget Sterling versions) is the second best selling artist line, behind only the Les Paul.

Thanks for the clarification, makes sense - but I'd still go the $3K route if I were to get serious about picking one up.

And I have heard that as well (2nd best selling signature guitar of all time behind the Les Paul).  I believe I even heard JP himself say that in an interview in the last year or two..

Second best signature line behind Les Paul?  Well done JP, never would have picked that, outstanding.

I find it hard to believe that Majestys could come anywhere near the sales of Ibanez Jem over the years.  That's amazing if true.

This article from 2019 references Forbes' statement regarding JP signature models; 'According to Forbes, the top selling signature model of all time is technically the Gibson Les Paul with John Petrucci’s right behind it.'

Appears to take into account the sale of Sterling models, which may/may not be fair as I'm not aware of many other popular signature models (i.e. Clapton, Yngwie) being offered by the main brand's budget line.  Either way - it's an impressive accomplishment for EBMM and JP.

There's some crazy playing on TV.  I mean there's crazy playing on all of them, but that's how I would rank them.
