Title: Albums you have seen performed live in full (two groupings)
Post by: KevShmev on November 14, 2019, 07:20:24 PM
What albums have you seen performed live in full, a) from start to finish, and b) over the course of a whole concert, but not straight through?  Not covers, but by the original band/artist (or one of them as a solo act or something like that).

For me...

Start to finish
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory (three times - twice in '00, '19)
Neal Morse Band - The Similitude of a Dream (two times - both in '17)
Rush - Moving Pictures (once - '10)
Neal Morse Band - The Great Adventure (once - '19)
Styx - The Grand Illusion (once - performed by Dennis DeYoung and his solo band - '19)
Neal Morse - Jesus Chris the Exorcist (once - '18)
Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom (once - '18)
Judas Priest - British Steel (once - '09)
Dream Theater - The Astonishing (once - '16)

Over the course of a whole concert, but not straight through
Radiohead - In Rainbows (once - '08)
Queensryche - Promised Land (once - '95)
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (once - '13)

Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers - Honky Tonk Union (Roger Clyne acoustic - 2019)
Transatlantic - The Whirlwind (2010)

Over the course of a whole concert, but not straight through

I believe this covers it.

I think the only one I've seen is WASP's Crimson Idol a few years back on the Crimson Idol tour.

Operation Mindcrime  - they also played OM II but I used it as a toilet break and popped out to McDonalds and came back for the encore  :lol

Operation Mindcrime

Saw that on the Empire tour.

Much better time to see it but we take what we can get out here.  Most of the bigger rock/metal bands never bothered with Australia until they needed to.

I very rarely go to concerts but I've been lucky enough to have seen Brian Wilson perform Pet Sounds from start to finish in 2002.

It’s hard to believe that I have seen Dream Theater so much more than any other band...but I’ve only seen The Astonishing all the way through. The IAW25 and both SFAM tours have skipped over the Pacific Northwest entirely.  :\

But I did see Moving Pictures on the time machine tour. So that was cool.

EDIT - Evermind’s post reminded me that I saw the Hand. Cannot. Erase tour. Which reminded me that I also saw the Fear of a Blank Planet tour where I believe they played the whole thing.
Title: Re: Albums you have seen performed live in full (two groupings)
Post by: Evermind on November 14, 2019, 09:48:32 PM
Start to finish:

Ayreon - The Human Equation
Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle
iamthemorning - Lighthouse
Ian Anderson - Thick as a Brick
Ian Anderson - Thick as a Brick 2
Jon Lord - Sarabande
Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase.

Over the course of the whole concert:

-

Almost:

Epica - Design Your Universe (didn't play White Walls)
Haken - Vector (didn't play Host)

The IAW25 and both SFAM tours have skipped over the Pacific Northwest entirely.  :\

Same for my country, except The Astonishing tour also didn't come to us.

Oh crap, I forgot to mention The Astonishing in my OP.
Title: Re: Albums you have seen performed live in full (two groupings)
Post by: Buddyhunter1 on November 14, 2019, 10:10:54 PM
Start to finish:
Dream Theater - Images And Words
Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory
Dream Theater - The Astonishing (regrettably)
Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Between The Buried And Me - The Parallax II: Future Sequence
Between The Buried And Me - Coma Ecliptic
The Ocean - Pelagial
Alcest - Kodama (the last track wasn't really played in full, but it still counts)

Out of order:
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing

Almost:

Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. (no Transience)
Mastodon - The Hunter (no The Sparrow)
Ghost - Meliora (no Deus In Absentia or the two segues)
Ghost - Prequille (no See The Light or Spöksonat)

There might be a few more but that's all I can think of right now. There's also probably one or two that I've cumulatively heard every song from over the course of multiple shows (A Dramatic Turn Of Events, maybe? Might be missing one or two).

Neal Morse's Testimony 2 would be on my "Almost" list, as he played all of it at Morsefest '17 except Absolute Beginner.

I'm sure I'm missing something, I'll edit if it comes up.

Did SW not play Transience throughout the whole tour? I totally remember him playing it during our show.

Also curious if any of the regulars saw Gilmour's On an Island.

Operation Mindcrime  - they also played OM II but I used it as a toilet break and popped out to McDonalds and came back for the encore  :lol

Fuck I saw that tour also.  Forgot about that.  Amazing how low the crowd got during that second set, then back up again for the encores.

Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Converge - Jane Doe
Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway

The Neal Morse Band - The Great Adventure
Pain of Salvation - BE
Rush - Moving Pictures

Yob - The Unreal Never Lived and The Great Cessation

I think that's it. The majority of those were due to nine trips to Holland's Roadburn festival. They always have a lot of these special, curated sets.

Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane

Over the course of a whole concert, but not straight through

Almost all
Probably way too numerous to mention here, so including some odd ones:

Leprous - Coal (only Salt was missing)
Soen - Tellurian (only The Other's Fall missing)
Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2x; different gigs from the one above, both without Transience)
VOLA - Inmazes (only A Stare Without Eyes missing)

I'm probably missing some here and there, but I think this is pretty accurate!

Operation Mindcrime

Saw that on the Empire tour.

Me too. Think I saw the whole of Promised Land too, complete with Geoff in leather shorts 😱. Saw Geoff do OM last year. Also saw OM 1 and 2 but stayed for it all 😀

Seen DT do SFAM, I&W and ToT

Probably seen a few others but will need to have a think.

I think it's pretty much like everyone elses.

Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory (2019)
Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase (2016) I believe Transcience was played, according to setlist.fm
Nine Inch Nails - Broken (2019)
The Neal Morse Band - The Great Adventure (2019)

Almost all
Dream Theater - The Astonishing, it was the 2nd leg of the US tour and they had switched out some of the tracks.
Taylor Swift - Reputation, I think just one or two tracks were left out.

My concert going is pretty slow over the last 20 years or so, when this really became a thing.

I saw Dream Theater play all of I&W at 2 shows in '92 and another in '93. It was basically their setlist plus a couple songs from WDADU.

I saw Boston play all of Third Stage in 1987. The played NINE shows at the Worcester Centrum.

Ugh; I have to go back and look for completeness, but...

For Sure:  (I'm with TAC: this is a new sort of phenomenon, and the bulk of my shows are before that)
Neal Morse Band - Similitude Of A Dream
Dream Theater - The Astonishing
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Extreme - Pornograffiti

Probably:
The Firm - The Firm
Cinderella - Night Songs
Yes - Close To The Edge

I'm sure there are other albums from opening acts and what not that are "complete", as well as albums that I've seen all the songs over multiple shows.

There's probably a good reason for that!  I wish I could forget having spent money to see it.

I'm sure I'm missing something, I'll edit if it comes up.

You are - Mystery / Lies and Butterflies.

Off the top of my head:

DT - The Astonishing, SFAM, I&W.

Transatlantic - Kaleidoscope (ProgNation at Sea)
Mystery - Lies & Butterflies
IQ - Ever
Neal Morse Band - Similitude of a Dream
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian

I'm probably forgetting something too - like piecing together a Rush album or something.

I'll add if I can remember any more.

Setlist Scotty reminded me that I too saw Images and Words (but not in order) in 1993!

I had forgotten that they played the whole thing on that tour.

Saw A.C.T in Gothenburg yesterday and they played all of Rebirth (EP) but not in order....
Tre of the 5 songs were played for the first time ever live. Saw them in May in Stockholm where they only played 2 songs of Rebirth.

Ok so initially I thought I had hardly any, but turns out I'd forgotten a whole load, especially around the early 2010s.

Start to finish:
Between the Buried and Me - Colors (2011)
Devin Townsend - Ki (2011)
Devin Townsend - Addicted! (2011)
Devin Townsend - Deconstruction (2011)

Hundred Reasons - Ideas Above Our Station (2014)
Opeth - Blackwater Park (2010)
Transatlantic - The Whirlwind (2010)
Ulver - Wars of the Roses (2011, before the album had come out or any of us had heard it, which was weird)

Not in order:
Haken - demo (2008)
Flying Colors - Flying Colors (2012)
Karnataka - Secrets of Angels (2015)
Muse - Origin of Symmetry (2001)

I also have a whole load of "almosts" that I can't be bothered to list out.

How was Hoobastank live?  I loved their first 3 albums.

I loved them. Saw them three or four times back in the 2000s. That show in 2002 was right after the first album came out, and they played all twelve songs, plus a few others (I think they were B-Sides to the album, but I don’t know because I hadn’t heard them yet.) And I totally agree with you, the first three albums were so good. They lost me at For(n)ever, and although the fifth album was pretty good, I never went back after that.

But they were one of my favorite live acts during my college days.

:lol The Astonishing was totally awesome live and also deserves to be in the list of reasons you hate me. :)

I'll confess to not really liking the PoS set - but I enjoyed the instrumental a good bit.

The Green Carnation set was the big surprise for me - I had the album, thought it was great, thought the show would probably be great, but it still blew me away.  I really have a lot to thank ProgPower for.

Dream Theater - Images & Words (2017)
Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side (2016)
Angra - ØMNI (2018)
Labyrinth - Return To Heaven Denied (2018)

I would count Lorenguard's Eve of Corruption but the only song they left off the set was the ballad Embrace. Otherwise they played the entire damn thing

Next year I'll add Magic Never Dies by Power Quest to the list

I don't really remember much of their set though.  I have my recording of The Night of Dreams (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGrm0DNivrM) but I know I didn't watch enough of the set, nor did I know their music at all, to really say I saw this album.

They were pretty good though, if I didn't want to do the signing session I would have watched the rest of the set.  It just they weren't a band I was familiar with so I made my choices.

Random and tangential thought, since playing a full album is one of the new cliches, I like when bands switch it up and adapt the tracklist to the set. A good album tracklist might not be a good live setlist, and since you already know which songs you're getting, knowing also the order kills all the surprise. Every album order is different and I think it's a smart thing to do adapting it to the flow of a live show, unless it's a concept album that tells a story of course.

I think it depends on the album and mixing up the order would be downright sacrilegious in cases where the tracklist is perfect already, but the way they used the title-track as the intro and opened with Speed of Light worked nicely.
Title: Re: Albums you have seen performed live in full (two groupings)
Post by: MirrorMask on November 30, 2019, 09:58:39 AM
Yeah, it depends on a case by case basis. I remember Metallica played the black album in reverse order, and I guess it works to end up with Sad But True and Enter Sandman, but they also played Ride the Lightning in reverse order. WTF? why would you start that section of the show with a bigass epic and close it with a perfect opener? the album order was perfect! opener, fast song, mid tempo, slower one, other stuff, one of their most famous and acclaimed songs and finally the kickass instrumental epic. I wonder who though the reverse order was a nice idea for that album.

Static-X had the album closer, December, as the intro tape since it's a more electric song. It worked perfect as a setup into the first song, Push It.

Dance Gavin Dance, I don't know why they put Inspire The Liars as the closer when they played it in sequence.
