Saw a poll for this elsewhere and thought we could do our own thang for it. Rules are simple...
Nominate ten albums, release date of 1-1-2010 to 12-31-2019...ranked one through ten. Each album will be given the opposite number of points..10pts for first place, 9 for second, 8 for 3rd, and so on... at the end, the album with the biggest point total will be named DTF's album of the decade.
Voting will be open for some time to allow everyone a chance to be heard, I'll do my own in the coming weeks...
EDIT!!!!! So a few small changes I wanted to make...first off, please rank your list. It's the core of how these will be scored. Fake it if you gotta, but I need something to go off of. List that aren't ranked will all get 2pts per album.
Second- Per the intense debate I had with Rich, let's go ahead and do 15 albums per list. Anyone who has already submitted can edit freely. I'll decide on a no editing cutoff, or cut it off at certain points as I count up the lists, but it probably won't be until late Dec so we can announce in the new decade.
Also, let's put a two album per band limit. Variety, it's the spice of life folks!!!! (lists already submitted are grandfathered in, with home's reply#81 on page 3 being the last)
Sorry for this, but I did the OP a bit off the cuff, hence the changes. If there are more, I'll add them here. I doubt it, but just in case.

It's highly unlikely that the best album of the decade is coming out in the last 2 months of it. Nov/Dec usually are slow months for new music anyway.

I've got 6 albums I'm looking forward to in November, particularly including Voyager, Wilderun and Max Cooper.
There have also been some cracking albums released in the last couple of months too that take time to digest and reflect on.

Not really because, when you are limited to only the two months in the immediate future, you generally know what is going to be coming out during that period. In your case, you are anticipating some albums that could potentially make the list. But for lots of us, the decade is essentially "over" in terms of our top 10, or we at least have a tentative list with the understanding that there could possibly be another album or two that could sneak in under the wire. Bottom line: I don't really see the issue.
Anyhow, question for lonestar: Do live albums count?
EDIT: In case you are on the fence, here is where I'm coming from: I'm not talking about generally listing a bunch of live albums as sort of a "cheat" in terms of a live album almost being a "best of" for a particular band. I'm only thinking of one live album in particular. And while it does have some of that, it's much more. Specifically, Epica's Retrospect release is just...well...epic. Yeah, most of it is a "best of" retrospective performance. But what makes it such a landmark live release for me is a combination of all of these factors: (1) great selection of songs from a lot of albums; (2) live performances that, in almost every single case, make these better than the originals and give them new life; (3) new songs done specifically for that release; and (4) the release being a special one to commemorate a landmark in the band's history, and lots of special features done as part of that, such as the orchestra, guest appearances, etc. It is truly a "special" release that, to me, makes it one of the albums of the decade if live releases can be part of that.

My list is likely to have at least two albums that had a November release date. Coincidentally they were released on the same day.

I'll have to take some time to get a ranked list I feel confident in, but I'll throw out some of the top candidates on my mind. This is not my list yet, and I'm putting a few more than ten here—I'll later narrow it.

Yeah this is always going to be a challenge with this sort of thing. Unavoidable though.

Big agree with ariich on it being way too early to decide. It has happened more than once that one of my favourite albums of a certain year went under my radar and I didn't find it until the next year, it even happened this year since I discovered Psychonaut's 2018 release which is easily in my top 5 of 2018 now.
And it's highly unlikely that you treat an album that came out 10 years ago the same as you treat and album that came out within the last 3 months for example, I need way more time to look back at an entire decade. I will probably never even get back to ranking them though as it will be way too much to go through. Off the top of my head the releases that stand out right now would be:

Think I can quite confidently pick mine already, as I'm not aware of anything I'd be that interested in coming out before the end of the year. There have been quite a few that have come out in the past couple of months that I like and am still digesting, but I don't see any of them threatening the top 10, except possibly Fear Innoculum.
Anyway, I've got 7 or 8 certainties, but I'll have to have a think about the last few spots.

It has happened more than once that one of my favourite albums of a certain year went under my radar and I didn't find it until the next year, it even happened this year since I discovered Psychonaut's 2018 release which is easily in my top 5 of 2018 now.
But the idea is to create a snapshot of our tastes at this point in time. You might buy a 2010s album in 2022 that winds up becoming your favourite, but that's irrelevant right at this moment, in 2019.
In related news, I was contemplating the other day, how to commemorate the end of this decade and the music produced therein, and I decided that, at some point probably in early December, I'm going to listen to one album from each year of the decade. I have a list pretty much locked in. I'm looking forward to it.

I can already think of AMOLAD as being my favorite from this period, but yea, that could be interesting to do as well.

So far I haven't got the slightest clue what will actually make it into my top 10 :rollin the competition is tight. Maybe my response right before yours got you confused, but that album was released in 2006 and I referenced it in response to an idea of doing a top 10 from 2000-2009. I do agree with it being up top though.

The Similitude of a Dream by Neal Morse Band is by number 1.
I suspect the Storm Corrosion CD and the first two by Steven Wilson this decade (Grace for Drowning and The Raven...) would not be far behind.

Correct on Skeleton Tree, but I chalk that up to me just not "Getting" Nick Cave. Both of those GYBE albums I found quite boring, I mean they aren't terrible, but not even close to what came before. F♯A♯∞, Lift Yr Skinny Fists, and Yanqui are all 5 star albums. The Self-Titled DT album has not aged well with me at all. The other stuff I was referring to was The Seer (terrible album, but like Nick Cave, maybe I just don't get it), I like some of the earlier Swans albums, but I think Michael Gira is off his rocker these days (everything since My Father...). And lastly Ghost I just don't get the hype for, but that's just me.
I like Grace For Drowning, although it isn't my favorite SW album. I also like Tracker.
As far as the other albums on your list. I was never big in to Cradle of Filth (I think I've listened to a couple of there albums way back in the day and didn't care for them too much) and I have never heard Daughters before, but will probably check them out based on them being on your list.

Correct on Skeleton Tree, but I chalk that up to me just not "Getting" Nick Cave. Both of those GYBE albums I found quite boring, I mean they aren't terrible, but not even close to what came before. F♯A♯∞, Lift Yr Skinny Fists, and Yanqui are all 5 star albums. The Self-Titled DT album has not aged well with me at all. The other stuff I was referring to was The Seer (terrible album, but like Nick Cave, maybe I just don't get it), I like some of the earlier Swans albums, but I think Michael Gira is off his rocker these days (everything since My Father...). And lastly Ghost I just don't get the hype for, but that's just me.
I like Grace For Drowning, although it isn't my favorite SW album. I also like Tracker.
As far as the other albums on your list. I was never big in to Cradle of Filth (I think I've listened to a couple of there albums way back in the day and didn't care for them too much) and I have never heard Daughters before, but will probably check them out based on them being on your list.
I definitely agree that Godspeed's last 3 albums don't hold a candle to their first 4 releases (Skinny Fists is a top 5 album of all time to me). But they still hit me hard. Tracks like Mladic, Piss Crowns Are Trebled and Anthem For No State have the same energy and vitality of their earlier stuff.
As for the Daughters album, I posted a couple of the songs a while back at a certain forum where I do believe you have an account. If you missed it, be sure to check that album out. It's pretty unique, exceptionally played, and equal parts chilling and thrilling. Check out tracks like The Reason They Hate Me and City Song.

granted none of the albums on your list that i've heard (SW, DT, GYBE) are particularly strong albums from any of those acts and i do not at all care for swans or daughters in general, but, TASTES

Man, Vice Verses is a great album. I forgot it came out in 2011. Selling the News is a song that hauntingly ages more and more better as the years goes on. That album in addition with Hello Hurricane are two fine albums from Switchfoot.

20: Obscure Sphinx - Void Mother (2013)
This is the album on here I've discovered the most recently, thanks to Sacul sending a song from it in my most recent roulette. Oppressively dark, immensely thick guitar riffs, fantastic vocals, and one of the best closing tracks I've heard in recent memory. If it weren't for one lackluster track (Decimation) this might have ranked even higher.
19: Anathema - We’re Here Because We’re Here (2010)
Anathema's second best album. Great record, but everything this album does well is, in my opinion, done even better by the other Anathema album on this list.
18: Destiny Potato - Lun (2014)
There's a few tracks on here I'm not crazy for, but when it comes to the songs I like (which is the majority of them) I can't stop listening to them. Best pop metal album (unless you count some of Devin Townsend's poppier albums) and the best female metal vocalist I've ever heard.
17: Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015)
I'm glad Steven Wilson went with a more modern sound on this album after all the retro throwbacks he did previously. Couple that with some fantastic songwriting, incredibly melancholy atmospheres, and some gut-wrenching emotion at points, and you get easily his best solo album, if you ask me.
16: Kauan - Muistumia (2014)
I guess this is technically a compilation instead of a proper album, but fuck it, it works as an album and all of the old songs on it have been completely re-recorded, so I'm going to count it. Fantastic atmospheric wintery post-blackdoomfolk metal.
15: Thy Catafalque - Sgùrr (2015)
Thy Catafalque has been one of my favorite bands as of late, or rather artist since it's basically just one dude from Hungary. This is his most sprawling, experimental, and consistently great album from front to back. A must-listen if you're into atmospheric / experimental black metal.
14: Ghost - Meliora (2015)
This album is solid from front to back, and every song on it is just packed with memorable hooks, crunchy guitar riffs, and tasty gothic instrumentation. Not much else to say about it.
13: Agalloch - The Marrow Of The Spirit (2010)
While this album isn't quite on the level as Ashes Against The Grain, it's easily my second favorite Agalloch record, and also their most atmospheric, which has always been what the band is all about. Everything on this album works to compliment its overwhelmingly dark and murky atmosphere, from its raw production to its more freeform, experimental composition. I'm not the biggest fan of The Watcher's Monolith (and the intro track), but every other song on here is great, especially Into The Painted Grey and Black Lake Nidstang.
12: Periphery - Periphery III: Select Difficulty (2016)
I didn't expect Periphery to ever top their second album (spoliers), and they haven't, but this album came really damn close. My only complaints about this one are that it feels more like a collection of songs than a single cohesive album, and a few of the tracks aren't that great. But so many of the songs on here are just so damn good; the eight song, 40+ minute run from Marigold to Catch Fire is nearly flawless.
11: Devin Townsend - Epicloud (2012)
A lot of Devin Townsend's records this decade have been trying to go in a more accessible direction, and this is by far the album where it payed off the most. From front to back, this album is anthemic, massive, emotional, and incredibly catchy. Fantastic album, and one of the most accessible metal albums in existence. In a good way.

10: Ulver - The Assasination Of Julius Caesar (2017)
This is the album that truly sold me on Ulver, and I can't think of any other record quite like it. They took their signature dark and experimental sound, infused it with catchy, poppy new wave songs, and the end result works infinitely better than it has any right to. It has a good amount of variety too, remaining engaging throughout with a mix of more straightforward songs and more freeform, experimental tracks like the amazing closer Coming Home. If you haven't listened to this, do it.
9: Periphery - Periphery II (2012)
This would be my favorite djent album of all time if a certain underdog hadn't swiped that title from it one year later. Every single song on here has something uniquely memorable and captivating about it. Great riffs, fantastic hooks, lots of variety, and infinitely better execution than the endless number of copycats trying to replicate this sound.
8: The Dear Hunter - The Color Spectrum (2011)
Okay, this "album" is a bit of an outlier here, as it's less of an album than it is an anthology. At 36 songs and over two hours long, it's absolutely immense, and there's a good amount of that runtime that I don't enjoy all that much. BUT, the fact that none of those 36 songs (well, except for one, which should be obvious if you're familiar with the album) feels like filler is frankly astonishing. This collection is broken into nine different EPs, each representing a different color, and there's a massive amount of variety in style across all of them. It's because of that variety that every song on here is memorable and feels warranted. I love concept albums like this where the concept is composition-based rather than thematic or literary, and this album executes that concept flawlessly.
7: David Maxim Micic - Bilo 3.0 (2013)
Leave it to some random dude to take all the best elements from Periphery and Devin Townsend, mix it with a heaping portion of child-like wonder and nostalgia, and create one air-tight and varied album that covers so much ground in a relatively short amount of time and executes it all effortlessly. This is just a really special album. Songs like Where Is Now? and Daydreamers make me happier listening to them than almost anything else.
6: Pendulum - Immersion (2010)
Okay, seriously, how is this album so consistently good? With fifteen full songs and a runtime of almost 70 minutes, you'd think that some of those tracks would be lackluster. But nope, all of them are decent at worst (which is only a few of them) to amazing at best. Despite many of these songs sharing the same drum and bass rhythm and tempo, nearly all of them have something uniquely memorable about them, and there's enough variety in the tracklist to keep the album engaging throughout. If you've enjoyed some electronic music before but are still on the fence about it, this album might just tip you over.
5: Ihsahn - After (2010)
At this point in the list, we're getting to albums that have virtually no low points. This album is just fantastic blackened progressive metal from start to finish, with a bleak, apocalyptic atmosphere that never lets up even for a moment, and some SICK SAXOPHONE PLAYING as a bonus. Ihsahn will likely never top this record, and I'm okay with that.
4: Anathema - Weather Systems (2012)
Many people will say this album is just We're Here Because We're Here but not as good. Look, musical tastes are entirely subjective and all, but come on. This album takes everything that its predecessor did so well and elevates it to an almost transcendental level. From start to finish, it hits you with one song just overflowing with passion and heart-wrenching emotion right after another. Untouchable Part 1, The Beginning And The End, Internal Landscapes... just to name a few. It's bright, it's melancholy at times, it's warm, it's incredibly atmospheric, and it's just amazing.
3: The Ocean - Pelagial (2013)
My favorite concept album of all time. The concept by itself is amazing: a record that takes you from the surface of the ocean to its deepest, darkest depths, with the music progressively getting more dark, intense, and dire over time. And of course, it executes that concept perfectly. As cliche as it sounds, this isn't just an album, it's a journey. And one that keeps you in its grip and never lets you go.
2: Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion (2012)
This album is so atmospheric that the mental images and landscapes it conjures in my mind just by listening to it are unparalleled. That's really what this album is all about. If you're waiting for "exciting stuff" to happen on this record, you're missing the point. It's very quiet and ambient, and you need to just sit down and soak it all in. But at the same time, it's not ambient to the point where there's nothing to grab onto besides texture. It's very melodic, and incredibly engaging if you're willing to put in a bit of attention. I love every song on it, and I hope that Wilson and Akerfeldt do another true collaboration sometime in the future.
1: Devin Townsend - Deconstruction (2011)
Well, here it is. Even almost a decade later, this is still one of the craziest, most ambitious, and most immense albums I've ever heard. I'll admit that some of the sillier moments on it (specifically on the title track) haven't aged quite as well as the rest of it, but still, I can't think of any other record from this decade that I'd rank over this one. It's one of those albums that's so brazen, so out there and indulgent, that it sticks with you forever. Despite being so immense, both in runtime and compositional density, it somehow manages to be captivating and satisfying throughout its entire duration. I think a lot of that is due to the album having an amazing flow, starting off relatively reserved and gradually getting more crazy and demented over time. Every aspect of it feels meticulously crafted with the utmost attention to detail, and as a whole, I'm hard pressed to think of many other musical artistic statements that I admire and enjoy more.

I wouldn't read too much into it, it's the difference between a 9/10 and a 10/10 lol. Citadel is great, but Urn is more cohesive and has a better overall structure imo. Citadel has some padding to it, Pyrrich is tied with As Icicles Fall for my least favorite song by NeO, and the piano-sections aren't really that interesting to me. Every song on Urn is a 9/10 or 10/10, the cyclic violin theme is one of the best they've ever written, the choral bits in Libera Pt 1 are AMAZING, there's a great balance of harsh and clean vocals, and the overall feel of it is very great and consistent. Citadel has some great moments, like all of Devour Me Colossus Pt II: Blackholes and Reveries from a Stained Glass Womb.
Basically, Urn is more structure and melody focused than Citadel, and overall it's more conservative (and imo refined) than its predecessor. Citadel is probably their most technical and proggy album. I think it's just a matter of preference, what elements of music you tend to put more focus on.

don't bother, tbh, before roka the production is crap & the symphonic instruments are mostly synthetic/midi-ish. i'd maybe swap roka & rengeteg but they're pretty close. meta and geometra just feel like they don't really matter/are retreading ground already beat into the dirt. honestly don't have high hopes for the upcoming one either but ehh??

I agree with Meta being mostly a retread. Even Urania which is great and easily my favorite song on the record kinda just feels like a lesser version of the first track from Regenteg.
Geometria is weird because it's like a 50/50 split of cool ambient / electronic focused stuff and some of the most tedious and lame metal songs he's written, namely the closer which is just a really shitty version of Urania. :lol And there's not a ton of cohesion between the electronic songs and the metal songs, aside from the transiton between the 2nd song and Totles which is probably the coolest moment on the album.
I don't have too high expectations for the new one either but it could pleasantly surprise me.

Totally agree. Switchfoot were completely at the top of their game with those two albums (Vice Verses and Hello Hurricane). Hoping they get back there at some point, but the last couple of albums seem to be going a different direction.

I could see someone liking Hold Your Color more since it's pretty different in style. It's my least favorite of theirs but that's mostly just a tastes thing. But I truly don't understand how you could like In Silico more. To me, Immersion feels like they took another stab at what they were trying to do with In Silico and executed it infinitely better.

Dude. I actually fell off the bandwagon after M2M, because I wasn’t a huge fan of The Catalyst when it came out. After Chester died, I went back and listened to the last four albums. ATS blew me away on first listen, and in my opinion, is their masterpiece. I feel like Catalyst makes sense in the context of the album. It’s the climax, really. Just an odd choice for the single release, considering the change in direction.

#1. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland (2017)
Man, I wish I liked this album as much as you. Crumbling Castle is a fantastic song, and King Gizzard doing prog rock sounds fantastic on paper (especially with how well they pulled off thrash metal on Infest The Rats Nest) but I just cannot get into any of the songs after the first one. I don't understand why the rest of the record is so consistently quiet and reserved.

20: Obscure Sphinx - Void Mother (2013)
This is the album on here I've discovered the most recently, thanks to Sacul sending a song from it in my most recent roulette. Oppressively dark, immensely thick guitar riffs, fantastic vocals, and one of the best closing tracks I've heard in recent memory. If it weren't for one lackluster track (Decimation) this might have ranked even higher.
19: Anathema - We’re Here Because We’re Here (2010)
Anathema's second best album. Great record, but everything this album does well is, in my opinion, done even better by the other Anathema album on this list.
18: Destiny Potato - Lun (2014)
There's a few tracks on here I'm not crazy for, but when it comes to the songs I like (which is the majority of them) I can't stop listening to them. Best pop metal album (unless you count some of Devin Townsend's poppier albums) and the best female metal vocalist I've ever heard.
17: Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015)
I'm glad Steven Wilson went with a more modern sound on this album after all the retro throwbacks he did previously. Couple that with some fantastic songwriting, incredibly melancholy atmospheres, and some gut-wrenching emotion at points, and you get easily his best solo album, if you ask me.
11: Devin Townsend - Epicloud (2012)
A lot of Devin Townsend's records this decade have been trying to go in a more accessible direction, and this is by far the album where it payed off the most. From front to back, this album is anthemic, massive, emotional, and incredibly catchy. Fantastic album, and one of the most accessible metal albums in existence. In a good way.
10: Ulver - The Assasination Of Julius Caesar (2017)
This is the album that truly sold me on Ulver, and I can't think of any other record quite like it. They took their signature dark and experimental sound, infused it with catchy, poppy new wave songs, and the end result works infinitely better than it has any right to. It has a good amount of variety too, remaining engaging throughout with a mix of more straightforward songs and more freeform, experimental tracks like the amazing closer Coming Home. If you haven't listened to this, do it.
7: David Maxim Micic - Bilo 3.0 (2013)
Leave it to some random dude to take all the best elements from Periphery and Devin Townsend, mix it with a heaping portion of child-like wonder and nostalgia, and create one air-tight and varied album that covers so much ground in a relatively short amount of time and executes it all effortlessly. This is just a really special album. Songs like Where Is Now? and Daydreamers make me happier listening to them than almost anything else.
4: Anathema - Weather Systems (2012)
Many people will say this album is just We're Here Because We're Here but not as good. Look, musical tastes are entirely subjective and all, but come on. This album takes everything that its predecessor did so well and elevates it to an almost transcendental level. From start to finish, it hits you with one song just overflowing with passion and heart-wrenching emotion right after another. Untouchable Part 1, The Beginning And The End, Internal Landscapes... just to name a few. It's bright, it's melancholy at times, it's warm, it's incredibly atmospheric, and it's just amazing.
2: Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion (2012)
This album is so atmospheric that the mental images and landscapes it conjures in my mind just by listening to it are unparalleled. That's really what this album is all about. If you're waiting for "exciting stuff" to happen on this record, you're missing the point. It's very quiet and ambient, and you need to just sit down and soak it all in. But at the same time, it's not ambient to the point where there's nothing to grab onto besides texture. It's very melodic, and incredibly engaging if you're willing to put in a bit of attention. I love every song on it, and I hope that Wilson and Akerfeldt do another true collaboration sometime in the future.

Yeah, Hibernal wouldn't work in a roulette setting, unless it was an album roulette. Even then I would be reluctant to send them.

Of course, I feel like if I would, I would put all four Alter Bridge albums released in the 10s, but I want to list some different bands that I have always liked over the years that delivered some fine albums.

Pretty solid list there, and a few I'll have on mine for sure. Ostura and Haken will make an appearance for sure, still unsure whether DT will make the cut though. If they do, it'd be ADToE.
As much as I really like/love all four DT albums from the 10's, not sure any would make my top 10. One might slide into the top 15 if I get around to doing an official top 15. I suspect the other three would all be in that 16-30 range.

This is un anfair generalisation. There are two different artists who would have had 3 albums in my top 15 and I can assure you my musical horizons are broad. According to RYM I've listened to 1,200 albums from the 2010s, and of those the ones I'd say I love (generally if I'm rating them 4 stars or higher) are from a range of different genres and styles, but that doesn't mean that the very top handful won't be somewhat similar because they hit just the right spot.

Partially because it’s a really really damn good album but also because I think given its respective genres RAM is much better pop/dance album than ADoTE is a prog/metal album (IMO). It’s hard to articulate, and trying to be objective is a futile goal but if I travelled 1,000 years into the future and a historian wanted to listen to some of the best music from 2010-2019AD I, personally, wouldn’t give them ADToE, even though I’m fond of it and enjoy listening to it.
To drive my point further, I f-ing LOOOVE Dokken, but can I really hold up “Tooth and Nail” as one of the best albums of the 80s? Probably not. Conversely, if I never hear anything off of Led Zeppelin IV again in my life it will be too soon, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t one of the best albums of the 70s.

For sure tastes are tastes and everyone has different criteria by which they rank/rate music, and I didn't mean to imply that you were criticising anyone else's tastes. I was only challenging the assertion that one artist (or even one genre) featuring heavily in someone's top 10 or top 15 says anything about how broad or narrow their musical interests are. It is, after all, only 10-15 albums out of, for most, people, hundreds that they'll have heard from that period.
EDIT: To use myself as an example again, the music I love and rate highly includes yes a lot of rock and metal and all sorts of sub-genres, but also pop, country, folk, jazz, funk, electronica, rap/grime, classical (admittedly not much from the last 10 years though!), and a load of music that crosses genres like electro-swing. The fact that the tiny number of albums that speak to me so much they make my top 15 are concentrated more on rock/metal and include some artists multiple times doesn't say anything about my tastes overall.

I be minor then too. But for these purposes, I'm gonna go with the albums I truly love, and were *my* best of the decade. Truthfully, for those that know the albums I list, there is really only 1 that wouldn't get some form of agreement around here that it's conceivably a "top" album of the decade.

Yeah, for me, the biggest indicator of how much I love an album is play time. How much of my life did they take up? For example, this year my two top releases are IQ and Allegaeon, and while IQ is of course my favorite band and Resistance is a masterpiece, I still seem to be going to Allegaeon more when I need some tunes. What does that say to which album I like more?

Taking the Jingle approach, and notwithstanding what I wrote, these are (mostly) MY favorite albums of the decade, not the "best" albums of the decade (though there is some overlap).
1. Van Halen - A Different Kind Of Truth (half sentimental, half legit; this is a legendary album by a legendary band)
2. Rival Sons - Feral Roots
3. Harry Styles - Harry Styles (yes, you heard me)
4. Flying Colors - Flying Colors (probably the one album I listen to most from this list; couple duff tracks keep it at four)
5. Iron Maiden - Book Of Souls (Dance of Death is still my favorite reunion record, but Maiden deserves a spot here)
6. Deep Purple - Now What?! (if only for the elegiac "Above And Beyond", but this is a SOLID record)
7. Kiss - Monster (Shut up. I like it. Sonic Boom is better overall, but this has some tracks that slap. "Shout Mercy")
8. Alice In Chains - Ranier Fog (WAY better than I thought it would or should be)
9. Myles Kennedy - Year Of The Tiger (solid record; I wish this Zeppelin III vibe would carry over to Alter Bridge and Slash)
10. Devin Townsend Project - Transcendence (this could be Empath too; both are solid records and make me like him)

I can't go that far, as I love albums like the debut, Fair Warning, 5150 and OU812 way too much to elevate it above any of those, but I would certainly take it over half of the original Roth albums, the Cherone album and maybe Balance.

For as much different stuff as I listen to, the prog sure dominated at the top for me this decade, largely due to Neal Morse and Steven Wilson. I ended up putting The Astonishing in my top 15 because it dominated my CD player for a long time and I do still love most of it a lot, haters be damned.
Just missing the cut were the Van Halen album, the newest album by Neal Morse Band and Rush's Clockwork Angels, the last of which probably would have made it and ranked high if it sounded a lot less muddy.
We'll allow lists of 15 albums to allow for the large time period, but let's limit it to two albums per band please. Any posts before this one are grandfathered in. Any albums after the two per band limit will not be counted.

Cemented my preference towards progressive metal for years, until I discovered .. different stuff. Remains my favourite Haken album for its youthful quirkiness and I'll fight anyone over it.
4. Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here (2010)
Stunned me on first listen and remained a staple in my CD-player for about 6 years afterwards.
5. The Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction (2011)
Ki is better, but that was released in 2009.
6. Ulver - Messe I.X - VI.X (2013)
Ulver only has two releases that top this one, but they were released in different decades. The last 5 years or so have been pivotal with regards to my musical tastes. Ulver was instrumental in my tastes going towards experimental stuff. This album is flawless.
7. Kamasi Washington - The Epic (2013)
My most recent discovery on this list, but what an album this is. Even at three hours long, it remains entertaining and frankly very engaging throughout.
8. Swans - To be Kind (2014)
Don't try this at home.
9. Agent Fresco - Destrier (2015)
I could have gone with their other album as well. Still gets played heavily by me.
10. Ulver - The Assassination of Julius Caesar (2017)
Almost as good as Messe I.X-VI.X, but way more accessible. Fantastic stuff to witness live as well.
11. Wilderun - Sleep at the Edge of the Earth (2015)
A modern masterpiece that could potentially climb over more time.
12. East of the Wall - The Apologist (2011)

Also, now that I've thought more about this list and my music tastes over the last decade.. a shit ton has happened in that time. I was still in high school at the beginning of 2010. I've moved out, started studying, finished two master degrees, had a bunch of different jobs, have started a career, got a girlfriend, bought a house... and my music tastes evolved with it. Looking back on the list, it's not representative of what I listened to over the last 10 years at all. I think most music I listened to predates 2010 and some of the more impactful albums I discovered along the way were not from this decade. That said, I'm still pretty pleased with how the list turend out, so it's okay.

So, since I posted the Secret Santa, I've gotten a few PM's asking how I've been doing - BTW thanks. Figured I'd throw my hand out at this, as I noticed that my music purchasing has tailed off the past two years, maybe it's time to come back.
Geez this was hard, my initial write anything that might make it list was 33 albums, and making some of those final cuts was brutal. A lot of bands I love are going to get no love here. No DT, Devin Townsend, Epica, Spock's Beard, Byzantine, Headspace, Ne Obliviscaris, The Dear Hunter, Iris Divine, Riverside, or Subsignal, and those are just ones that made the initial list. Doing this reminded me of a ton of stuff I forgot about.
Right now I can't make the final cut, so here are the sixteen in roughly year order.

1. Beyond the Bridge - The Old Man and the Spirit
Quite possibly my favourite progressive metal album after The Human Equation at this point. The biggest advantage over most Ayreon albums is that it's more concise. Also, the story is fantastic. Definitely and without any doubt my favourite album of the decade.
2. Ayreon - The Theory of Everything
The album that reignited my love for progressive rock and metal and made me start buying physical CDs way more actively than earlier. My wallet isn't thankful, but I am. The story is good, the sinners are great, also the art is gorgeous. I still have a poster with the art hanging on the wall at work. Hopefully I'll witness this album performed live one day.
3. Haken - Aquarius
Quirky, adventurous and gorgeous, and once again, concise enough to fit on one CD. Haken may be more mature now, but they didn't re-capture that spark that's present on Aquarius. Maybe it's a good thing as their other albums are also very strong, but they're not as amazing as this one, in my opinion. The last three songs run is spectacular.
4. Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing
The album that got my best friend and his wife, who are both metal fans, into prog rock. Maybe not very original material here, but the execution is flawless. The title track is one of the few things that usually makes me shed a few tears at the live show.
5. Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase.
I didn't think Steven could top Raven, and maybe he didn't, I'm not sure because these two are interchangeable for me, but this album is also fantastic. Not a weak track here, and a lot of fantastic ones. I saw Ancestral on all three SW shows I witnessed, and man, it never gets old.
6. Headspace - I Am Anonymous
Another incredible prog metal record, and one I'm surprised isn't mentioned more often in this thread. This is the album where Damian shines most, I think. I mean, if you don't count Ayreon live shows. Almost all tracks are on the longer side here, but they never get boring. Fantastic songwriting.
7. Nightwish - Imaginaerum
About two years ago I was quite surprised to realize that this is my favorite Nightwish album now. This album was in my heavy rotation for the last few winters and I don't expect it to change for the next few years. The band sounds very inspired here, not afraid to make some risky decisions for the song's directions. The result is stellar.
8. Avantasia - The Mystery of Time
Yeah, I know. Not Ghostlights and not Moonglow. The Mystery of Time is still my favorite Avantasia from this decade. I raved about it quite a lot in the respective band thread.
9. IQ - The Road of Bones
I remember including this album in my Top 50 in 2014, and hoping it wasn't too soon, worrying about its staying power and so on. I needn't have worried. This record is still going strong after five years. Definitely my favorite IQ record and one of the finest albums of the decade.
10. Fates Warning - Theories of Flight
After mediocre DiaDL, this album surprised me. Fantastic songs, Ray sounds great, it's as if the band suddenly found its second wind. Very impressive album this late in a career.
11. iamthemorning - Lighthouse
You've seen me raving about this around GMD, so yeah, this is still great.
12. Leprous - Bilateral
My opinion about this changes from month to month. Sometimes it's Bilateral that amazes me, sometimes it's The Congregation. I'll give a nod to Bilateral today as a more diverse album and the milestone in the band's career.
13. Anathema - Weather Systems
This album is unlike anything else in my audio library, I think, and a great example of the band capturing something unique on the record. Always lovely to listen to this.
14. Arch / Matheos - Winter Ethereal
Judging simply by the fact I've been spinning this for probably half a year now and that I'm yet to get tired of it, and none of the 2019 releases came close to it so far... Yeah, I think this album deserves to be here.
15. Mark Knopfler - Privateering
To be honest, sometimes I do skip a track on this one, but to be fair, it has twenty tracks. It also has some of my favourite ballads ever on this, and plenty of other fantastic songs.

I Am Anonymous is a damn fine record, but I don't know that it's better than a lot of the albums that are on people's lists. It barely made my top 20 for 2012 (though it would probably move up more than a few places if I did the rankings today).

I absolutely love every song on it. It could go down as my favorite, but the blue album is so damnn nostalgic to me that it's hard to top from that perspective.
Also, Slipknot's album is quickly rising (seems like it's going right to the top) of my albums for 2019. I'm really not sure where it goes in this list, it's just too new to compare to albums that have had many years to settle. But if it tops my 2019 list, I think it deserves to be on here somewhere.

Not that obscure. Maria Schneider won 5 grammy awards (including "Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album" for The Thompson Fields), Henry Threadgill won the Pulitzer Price for Music for In for a Penny, In for a Pound in 2016, and Wadada Leo Smith was nominated for the same prize in 2013. I expect these three albums to be on many jazz critics lists for the best albums of the decade.
Also, Tim Berne has been a major figure of the New York jazz scene for more than 30 years, and Satoko Fujii, in a time when the economical context of music makes particularly difficult to create big bands, leads not one but five of them. Finally, Emile Parisien is one of the major young french jazz artists, and has won several prizes.
They do play weird music (except Maria Schneider), but they're widely recognized in the genre. The problem is that the genre gets more obscure every year (even if there seems to be a development of a more easier to listen, rock and pop influenced, jazz nowadays)...
I've probably listened more to other, more accessible, records in recent years, but these are some of the albums that I see myself still listening to in 5 or 10 years, because their musical density is such that I still discover new things in them after dozens of listens.

If they were released at the same time as a double album, I would have put them in. But as individual albums, I couldn't find 2 spots for them in the list.
Haken - Affinity. I usually struggle to pick my favourite Haken album, but listening to them all again, I have to go with Visions over The Mountain and Affinity misses out as it has a couple of songs I don't like that much. Probably would have made it in the list if I was allowed more than 2 albums per artist.
Anathema - Distant Satellites. Quite similar to Haken, I really like this album, but there are a couple of tracks that drag it down below Anathema's other 2 in my list.
Tool - Fear Innoculum. Might have squeezed in if it had been out a bit longer. Also feel like I'm comparing it a bit to Lateralus and 10,000 Days, which it isn't quite as good as.
Maybeshewill - I was Here for a Moment, then I was Gone. Never really going to be a contender, but it's still a great album and I needed at least some post-rock representation, as it's a genre I listened to loads early in the decade.
Teramaze - Are we Soldiers. Again, it was never likely to threaten the top 15, but I really like these guys and this is a solid album.
Just noticed there's nothing from 2017 or 2018 in my list. Would be interesting to see which year is deemed the best once all the votes are tallied.

I didn't put them because they are not "new" material, but have we talked about the Jellyfish re-releases from... I think they were 2013? If you get the double Bellybutton and Spilt Milk, you essentially have their entire discography, save for a couple live b-sides, and man, are those records still good. I'm way late to the party, but they just grow and grow and grow...

Wow, Hail to the King and Nightmare over The Stage?
Now that some time has passed, I think I'd put those two above The Stage as well. I find myself hardly ever listening to that album. Hail to the King gets a lot of flack for the drums, but songwise I find those songs super catchy and fun. Nightmare is a bit closer to the Stage though.

Wow, Hail to the King and Nightmare over The Stage?
Now that some time has passed, I think I'd put those two above The Stage as well. I find myself hardly ever listening to that album. Hail to the King gets a lot of flack for the drums, but songwise I find those songs super catchy and fun. Nightmare is a bit closer to the Stage though.
I mean I consider myself a fairly large Avenged Sevenfold fan but I've only listened to Hail to the King once! None of the recent ones are on par with their earlier albums (mainly Waking the Fallen and City of Evil) but I'd probably rank:

He Is is such an awesome song, I don't think I needed to see it live to love it, but for Avenged, Buried Alive was a really cool live song from the one time I did see them live wheras God Damn was not a song that made me like it more after seeing it live (to keep the A7X album comparison and opinions going).

I guess I've also kinda cheated as I put Coheed's Ascension/Descension as one album.
That's within the rules; the 11 points for the 5th place rank would just be split equally between the two albums (5.5 each).

Yeah, Hail to the King was one of the most boring albums I have ever heard. It ranked super low for me for 2013. Nightmare was a much better album, but still only like a 6/10 or something like that. The Stage gets better every time I listen to it. I think it's about on par with City of Evil now, which is at least an 8/10 album.

They were not only released separately, but also with a four month gap in between them, so I think they should count as 2 albums & not 1 double album. Unless lonestar is willing to make an exception for albums that have the same title (which I doubt, since he didn't say anything when I pointed out Juggernaut Alpha/Omega being two albums), that's a no from me.
Also believe it or not, yes you are the only one so far who's had Afterman (or any C&C album for that matter) on their list. :lol

While they’re not the most engaging band, out of the last 100+ gigs I’ve been to, both of the Contortionist shows were some of the most creative. They’re one of those bands that make very interesting changes to their live sets. Cool unique interludes (not on the albums) and added layers to the original songs, a really rewarding show especially if you’re already familiar with the songs!

:lol no, but I get what lonestar means, those weird improv intermissions are mostly the singer doing some gibberish with atmospheric / glitchy background music, and the stage presence he gives off (I think intentionally) is very bipolar in that he will act super calm during cleans, and move his mouth like a fucking demon during harsh vocals very unnecessarily over the top. But I like that theatric feel

The album that reignited my love for progressive rock and metal and made me start buying physical CDs way more actively than earlier. My wallet isn't thankful, but I am. The story is good, the sinners are great, also the art is gorgeous.

I'm pretty sure that's a feature of most streaming services, & I think iTunes keeps track of that as well.

Sorry if it seems a bit one dimensional, but it's fairly honest. Once I *really* love a band, I tend to go a bit bananas. Odd Logic in particular is a band that I just wish I could get people to check out. I'm sure if 1000 people gave their stuff a couple of spins, they would get at least several hundred die hards. And their new one is absolutely the best one yet.

First off, I want to give a massive thank you to IDontNotDoThings for her invaluable help in tallying these results into a fashion way more organized than my feeble chef mind is capable of. Without it, you all would be waiting another week for this :lol
Secondly, I want to thank the participants...we had 55 DTF users nominate 448 albums for the distinct honor of being our album of the decade. Now it should come as no surprise that our house band dominated the top 15 with all the decades output in there, and a good deal of the rest of the top 15 being fairly predictable, but at least for me, there were some surprises, especially if you eliminate the house band.

So here goes. I know the OP said limit to 2 albums but I'm sorry, I just can't in good conscience do it. It just wouldn't be my top 15 albums of the decade otherwise.
Fair enough I guess, but Year Of The Black Rainbow & The Colour Spectrum won't get any points from you because of the 2 albums rule - just fyi.
I guess I've also kinda cheated as I put Coheed's Ascension/Descension as one album.
That's within the rules; the 11 points for the 5th place rank would just be split equally between the two albums (5.5 each).
I'm fine with The Color Spectrum not getting points but technically The Afterman is a double album so it could count as one release? Heretic just put it as one entry on his honourable mentions. I can't be the only one who has it on their list. If that does count as a double album then can I still have Year of the Black Rainbow?
They were not only released separately, but also with a four month gap in between them, so I think they should count as 2 albums & not 1 double album. Unless lonestar is willing to make an exception for albums that have the same title (which I doubt, since he didn't say anything when I pointed out Juggernaut Alpha/Omega being two albums), that's a no from me.
Also believe it or not, yes you are the only one so far who's had Afterman (or any C&C album for that matter) on their list. :lol
Just going back through this thread now that the results have been posted. I definitely would have had one of these Coheed albums on my list but completely forgot about them when making my list.

Yeah, can't remember the year, but it was off the Weather Systems tour. Their only SF appearance, they played a small 500 person club. I was front row in front of Lee...got to stare into her eyes as they opened with the first four off the album. Talk about falling head over heals man...

I remember going to one of their shows in 2013 in Oakland. I think the venue was called the Metro Operahouse. I also saw them in 2014 at The Fillmore in SF, but I don't remember them playing the first four off the album at this show. I could be wrong though.

Heard 14/20! Not bad. Happy to see Weather Systems do so well. I find ADTOE and especially The Mountain to be incredibly overrated among these parts but I'm not surprised in the slightest to see them at the top.
EDIT: Wow, To Pimp A Butterfly tied with WHBWH? Talk about an outlier in the top 20 :rollin

Does Northern Nevada count? :biggrin: I lived in Santa Rosa until 1997, but I've been in Nevada ever since. I still go over to that area quite often; Napa, Sonoma, San Fran, Point Arena, etc. Have lots of family that still live in that general area.

It's nice to see how appreciated Anathema is. These guys have been my favorite band this decacde and as some of you have said, they kill it live.
No surprises with DT owning this since this is DTF.
What I find the most intersting is how many albums get 1 or 2 votes since it shows how diverse the musical tastes are in this forum.
I find ADTOE and especially The Mountain to be incredibly overrated among these parts but I'm not surprised in the slightest to see them at the top.

It really shouldn't surprise anyone that all four of DT's albums show up in the Top 14 for the Decade at the DT forum. None of them would be in my Top 50, but ADTOE is the best them.
I'm rather impressed that I've listened to 16 of them - though a few of them only have 1 spin. BTBAM and the bottom 3 are the ones I've never listened to.

Very glad to see Weather Systems at #3. I would've thought it'd be DT, Haken and then Steven Wilson, but I'm pleasantly surprised with Anathema there. This album is outstanding.

You're right, I'm sorry. As for something more (dare I say) constructive, I'm not surprised that ADTOE went to No.1. I am thoroughly surprised that TA finished so high. (I'm sure it can be seen as some sort of testament that it seemed to touch quite a few people here.

Fun fact: Weather Systems was actually in the lead for quite a while, with ADTOE being quite far behind, but then towards the latter half (I think after bosk1's vote), ADTOE started getting way more points from people putting it near the top of their lists. Weather Systems was then in 2nd, but it was overtaken by The Mountain in the last week or so.

I'm not much of a fan, myself; I think it's overblown and not in a good way* (says a fan of Tales From Topographic Oceans and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway) and yet... it's probably the best that Mangini has fit into the group. I have respect for Mangini, but not a lot of emotional connection, and yet on that record, he seemed to be the most integrated.
* Bear in mind, it's still Dream Theater, and it's still probably better than 80% of the records out there.
