As I posted in the main tracker thread, I've been meaning to rank all the songs I received in my four roulettes. Well, I didn't get to every song .. just the best ones. Which I now present for your viewing and (perhaps) listening pleasure.
Four roulettes, 37 players, 395 bands, 445 songs, one list. I was just initially just planning on doing a Top 50, with some honourable mentions, but as I went through the process to stack rank them, holy shit did you fuckers send me some awesome music – some of which I’d forgotten to revisit all that much. So, seeing as how there’s only one active ‘Top-50’ at the moment, I might as well do all of the songs that made it into the “Top” category – essentially, the top 1/3 of the entire list of submissions.
I won’t be giving every song from 150-51 it’s own writeup, maybe the odd comment here and there. I don’t want to be at this until 2020. I’ll probably drop 5 or so at a time.
First, some more stats that I found kinda interesting.
30 DTF’rs are represented - number of roulette's they participated in [bolded users and their prediction of how many songs they have in this list]:
Wolfking – 4 (Winner, v3) [7]
Lonestar - 4 [6]
jjrock - 4 [4]
Bolsters – 3 (Winner, v4) [6]
Doc - 3
Elite - 3
King - 3 [4]
Lowdz – 3 (Winner, v2) [7]
Nekov - 3 [3]
TAC - 3 [7]
Big Hath - 2 [4]
Coz - 2
Prog Snob - 2
Evermind - 2 [4]
senecadawg2 – 2 [4]
Train - 2 [1][/b]
Zook - 2
Zydar - 2
bl5150 - 1 [3]
Indiscipline - 1
Kattoelox - 1 [3]
Kirksnosehair - 1
last.fm - 1
Lethean - 1 [1]
Mystery Machine - 1
Obscure – 1 (Winner, v1)
Puppies - 1 [1]
Stadler - 1 [1]
WPaPU - 1
Ytse – 1
7 players struck out (but thanks for playing):
Adace
Bosk
elefantStone
lolzeez
Parama
Sacul
ShadowNinja
v1 - 2012
32 songs (out of 80 that were received)
21.3% of this list; 40% of the songs received in Roulette 1 made the cut
Mean rating – 63
v2 - 2014
29 songs (out of 114)
19.3% of the list; 25.4% hit rate
Mean rating - 93
v3 - 2015
49 songs (out of 128)
32.6% of the list; 38% hit rate
Mean rating - 73
v4 - 2018
40 (out of 123)
26.6% of the list; 32.5% hit rate
Mean rating - 75
So, v3 represents the most songs on this list, but v1 was the most prolific; v2 is statistically the worst. As to be expected, over time some songs aged better than the rating that I gave them in the roulette, and some songs aged worse. One asterisk means I bought the album; two means I bought the whole damned discography
150 - v4 / Evermind / EnkeliNation / Last Time Together
149 - v4 / Indiscipline / Nikolo Kotzev's Nostradamus / Inquisition
148 - v1 / Doc / Power of Omens / Alone I Stand
147 - v3 / TAC / Lords Of The Trident / Shattered Skies
146 - v2 / Lowdz / At Vance** / Take My Pain (well, almost the whole discography)
-
Hell yeah, made the Top 150!
Only know Lords of the Trident from the rest of the batch, I think Tim also sent this one in my roulette.
-
:corn
-
Cool idea. I remember being bummed about being eliminated sending Coheed and Cambria, but I've forgotten what I sent in the other roulette.
-
Following.
Tangentially, I was thinking that while I don't feel I could do justice to making a Top 50 album ranking, as many have done here, I could more easily take a shot at a Top 50 song ranking.
-
haha rip parama, what a loser
-
Curious to see what I got on here.
-
Hey, look at that, I got a song on this list! :metal Curious as to what it is. I will follow and find out :tup
-
I got 3! But the first one at #147. Hopefully a got one in the Top 100! :lol
-
Wait, that's the number of songs, or the number of Jingle's roulettes you were in? I read it that the "1" by my name is that I participated in one of Jingle's roulettes and that I have at least one song (but we don't know how many) in the list.
Am I wrong?

No, I read it exactly the same way.

:lol
Yeah, D'uh! I'm so dumb. :lol
I wasn't in the first one. There were many roulettes that went by before I started playing. I actually have to thank Lonestar who was nice enough to actually invite me to participate in one of his.
-
Stadler’s explanation is spot on. (ie Puppies ... you MAY have more than one song)
Feel free to make predictions on your number of songs. I was hoping to make a game of it ... might even come up with a prize for the most accurate.
-
125
-
My prediction is 0-1
-
I'm gonna say I got 6 on the list, one from each roulette with two bonus songs.
-

You got more than 6, bro. Songs that is. ;D
-
Following.
-
Following of course. I really have no idea how many songs. I'd have to go back through the threads I think but that's probably cheating.
-
Coolio.

Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat.

HA, I think the "1" is still my number of songs. :)

HA, I think the "1" is still my number of songs. :)
Which would make sense that it would be (placed) in parentheses.
-
Well if At Vance only got me to number 146 I’m not sure I’ll have too many in the list if I get 7 (my lucky number) I’ll be happy.
-
Cool thread!
I’m hoping one of my meat and potatoes songs makes the list lol
-
Hell yeah, made the Top 150!
Only know Lords of the Trident from the rest of the batch, I think Tim also sent this one in my roulette.
You'll likely be interested in At Vance. Ollie Hartmann was the vocalist for a good chunk of their disgography, then Rick Altzi took over.
I'll put people's guess in square parenthesis in the OP. As for a prize ... I'll gift any album from the Top 50 the the person most accurate in their guess. I'll have to come up with a tiebreaker rule. Let me noodle on that.
Katt... you may want to modify your guess. Though I will tell you that you only off by a number between 124 and 116.
I'm gonna say I got 6 on the list, one from each roulette with two bonus songs.
You got more than 6, bro. Songs that is. ;D
He was eliminated in the Qualifications in v2. So, there's that.
-
I don't want any prize you have to noodle on!
-
Damn, it's been ages since I have heard Power Of Omens.
-
I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume my BABYMETAL submission didn't make the cut....

I'm pleasantly surprised Lords Of The Trident made the list. Shattered Skies is really a great song. That dude has some pipes, and the band has some chops, despite looking fucking ridiculous.
-
This is a really cool idea! How the hell did I get into 3 of your roulettes knowing I'm not good at them? :lol. I'm gonna guess there are maybe 3 songs in this list that came from me.
-

Can't be any more ridiculous than BABYMETAL.

True! Like I don't even know what babymetal is.

I'm too lazy to find out what I sent in the other roulette I participated, so I'll say I've got 4 songs total on the list, three from the 4th roulette (including EnkeliNation) and one from the other one.
-
Predicting 7 songs on the countdown.

Ya'll don't have much confidence in yourselves, do ya? 30 people on the list, 150 songs ... that's an AVERAGE of 5. And I'll tell you this, there are only 5 people that have just 1 song (and only two of those five are regular posters at this time).
-
Yeah, well, the last thing I would want to do would be to say, yeah I have 12 songs and only end up with 2. :lol
I'd rather guess low and appear humble. ;D
-

Unlike Katt who thinks he's got 80% of the songs after having played in 1 roulette. :lol
I'll give it a couple more days to see if anyone else wants to play, but at some point I have have a deadline before we get too deep into the list.

I mean, I figured you just browsed my collection and realized how awesome my taste in music is. The roulette is just a formality.

I don't remember doing so well in the one roulette I participated in. So I don't know, I could be one of the two. Would love to be wrong of course. :)
-
Lethean sent Katatonia
Oh sorry, wrong thread :lol

I just went through the roulettes I was in. I sent several things you ended up liking on your second roulette so maybe I can get to those 5, but my stay in your third roulette was pretty short and I didn't seem to hit the mark many times during the first one.
-
Lethean sent Katatonia

I certainly hope Katatonia made the list, but I'm not optimistic.

I suppose so. :)
-
I see a few #1 songs from multiple games making it. I'll go with 4 songs.
-
Are we gonna get an update today?
-
Are we gonna get an update today?
Sure... since 3 of the songs here are from users not following the thread (and 2 of them AWOL in general), here's the next 5:
145 - v3 / bl5150 / No Gravity / Can't Dream Anymore - Andy Kuntz on vocals... this scored well during the roulette, but has fallen out of favour, and almost got bumped entirely. I checked out the album, and the rest of it was rather mediocre, despite having a nice list of vocalists (Michele Luppi, Fabio Lione, Mark Basile)
144 - v3 / Prog Snob / A.C.T. / Wailings from a Building... his one and only entry.
143 - v2 / kirksnosehair / Silent Voices** / Into the Flow - the vocal melodies haven't aged very well on this one, but overall a really good act.
142 - v3 / Lowdz / Serpentine / Season of the Witch
141 - v4 / Evermind / Dark Empire / From Refuge to Ruin
-
That Serpentine album is excellent.
-
I think the more interesting challenge would be to guess who's number one.
-
That wouldn't be fair to everyone, since a few people were only in just the most recent one. A better idea is to guess which is the highest ranking song from each roulette you participated in. Though, I won't count those who played but were eliminated in the qualifying rounds from v2 or v3.

K-K-K-K Kattelox is c-c-c-coming to k-k-kill you Tim

K-K-K-K Kattelox is c-c-c-coming to k-k-kill you Tim
Glad you showed up (with your best Bill Denbrough impression! not that Tim will get that). When I started pulling this list together, I was absolutely stunned to see that you only played in ONE roulette. :omg:
-
It took me a few years to actually get involved in roulettes at all , which takes care of your first couple and by the time of your fourth I had retired ;D
-
I'm pretty sure I know the top 2 songs.

I was literally like, who in the hell is Bill Denbrough, and then I read the small print. :lol
It's a tough call, because the fact that I have no f'n clue who he is is proof that I actually have a life, or is it proof that I actually have no life? :lol
-
I still think I only have 1, but who knows? Well Jingle knows......
-
It took me a few years to actually get involved in roulettes at all , which takes care of your first couple and by the time of your fourth I had retired ;D
Retired after what, playing on 5 or 6?!? Short career. I'd tell you to make your prediction, but you probably already have every album in this list. :lol
I'm pretty sure I know the top 2 songs.
I'd wager you know one, but maybe not both.
-
In fairness to TAC, Bill Denbrough as a reference is a bit out of left field. I say this as someone who claims the source of the reference as my favorite novel.
-

:lol
I won 6 so if I played 5 or 6 that's a pretty good strike rate :P
-
Shit talking with Fogey's gets confusing.
-
Alright, so if this one made it then I probably have more than four songs. :lol
-
Prediction wise I’ll go with 4 from me.
-
considering I only got to send 2 songs in one of the roulettes because I was cut in a prelim round, I'm inclined to say 4, but will be optimistic and say 6.
-
no wait. I wasn't in 3 roulettes. I was only in the middle two, not the first or last - meaning I was really only in one. So I will settle on 4 songs.

Care to make a guess, gents?
-
No idea mate- one roulette might mean 10 songs. ........ I'll take a wild guess and say 3.
-
I'd wager you know one, but maybe not both.
Hmmm....I don't know.
-
By the way I know two from this batch, A.C.T. I've got in my second roulette I think but didn't check them out further, the song was called A Failed Escape Attempt, I think. Silent Voices I've got in my latest one in the greatest hits round, really liked the song called Burning Shine.
Interested in that No Gravity song.

Oh yeah ... you too :blush
And Katt needs a real guess.

7? I haven't looked back either. (It could be 1 or 2 more but don't want to get egg on my face.)
Edit: Actually 7 sounds like a lot. Probably less.
-

:lolpalm:
1 or 2... out of 40+ songs you've sent me, one winning roulette, and 2 other 'Finals' appearances?

I'll mark you down for 7. :lol
-
I really hate tooting my own horn. :lol
-
I guess 4
-
That Serpentine album is excellent.
Best Ten album since Spellbound 😀

That took me far longer than it should have, but still got a coffee snort. That was funny.

Other than TAC predicting I was combing my hair during Theocracy's set at ProgPower (I wasn't - but immediately after they finished I was) that's the funniest thing I've ever read from him :rollin
-
Cool idea! I think I have the best shot of winning the prediction contest :lol I have one song on the list, that The Great Discord song from last roulette! When you continuously faceplant in someone's roulettes, the actual good scores become more memorable
-

Ha. It does have some of Gary's most consistent songwriting in a long time. Would have been just that too if it were a Ten album.

Okey dokey, I think I've got all the predictions that I'm gonna get. Others are either no longer regularly posting, or haven't peeked in here yet (bold are Roulette winners)
Wolfking – 7
TAC - 7
Lowdz – 7

Lonestar - 6
jjrock - 4

2 people nailed their guess dead on.
2 people over-estimated how many songs they had.
13 of you under-sold yourselves.
So, for those two that were dead on, I'll gift (either thru bandcamp or iTunes or Amazon... a legitimate purchase and gift if I can) any album on this list.
-
Please, Kattoelox is my brother
-
haha... I noticed that the other day. I guess when I was running v4, that was in the timeframe Bosk re-named you. I wasn't bothered enough to change it.

Wait, one of Katt's friends whipped out a hair brush and brushed Katt's hair? That's either cool AF or creepy AF, not sure which.
-
No, I was elsewhere getting jiggy with it (na na na na na na na).
-
Hahaha. No - the friend started brushing his own hair. And I was like "you brought a brush to the venue?" and jingle chimed in that Katt had one too (and may have said he was brushing his hair earlier). :)

-
I definitely overrated...
-
Guarantee I undersold myself, something I'm quite adept at.
-
What if I told you you're both wrong!
:neverusethis:
And just so lonestar doesn't get his panties in a wad....
140 - v3 / wolfking / Adagio / Dominate – great chorus … with a tasteful splash of growls (though, bordering on too much just before the solo). But those sweeping background piano arpeggios are gold!
139 - v4 / Train / Solution .45 / Winning Where Losing Is All – you under estimated your powers. Tremendous riffs here with a glorious chorus. Will Solution .45 show up again later?
138 - v2 / jjrock / Leatherwolf / Thunder – a heavy dose of meat and potatoes
137 - v2 / TAC / Constantine** / The Broken Remain – shit, I didn’t realize they had a 2017 release. Gonna have to check that shit out! As I listen to this right now I'm thinking - did I really get 136 songs better than this !?!? Damn fine track.
136 - v2 / jjrock / DC Cooper* / The Angel Comes – DC has the voice of an angel
-
Fuck I love Solution .45.

137 - v2 / TAC / Constantine** / The Broken Remain – shit, I didn’t realize they had a 2017 release. Gonna have to check that shit out! As I listen to this right now I'm thinking - did I really get 136 songs better than this !?!? Damn fine track.
:metal :metal
And just so lonestar doesn't get his panties in a wad....
…now he's going to get a wad in his panties. ;D

Oh that happens in a stiff breeze.

Never heard this band before. A couple minutes in to this song and I am liking it!

Chris, try this one:
The Darkest Grace (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U88hcuP53Dc)
Such an amazing intro...
-
Digging it! So behind on new music though. Been listening to new music (new to me, anyway) at my new job, but that often is while I am driving the company van (and thus with part of my attention on the road), or otherwise working in a capacity where I can listen to music, but not fully focus on it. I feel like half an album will go by before I realize it, and can form no immediate thoughts about what I just listened to.
-
Sounds like it's time for another roulette!
-
No! I am still deep-diving in to the bands I found most intriguing in my last one!
Special thanks to Tomislav95 for introducing me to Ghost via Square Hammer, whom I saw live a couple weeks ago, much to my delight.
-
Just wanted to randomly say that this is a fucking awesome thread idea Chad. You have to be a music whore to warrant the thread idea, but you easily qualify! :tup

Yes... yes I am. I take this as a compliment. Love you too pal
Pretty sure I checked that newer Constantine and it was shit.
I gave 'er a spin yesterday... couple of decent tracks, but doesn't hold up to the first 2, that's for sure.
Ok, gonna make sure lonestar doesn't have a seizure.
135 - v2 / Nekov / Dragonland / Too Late for Sorrow…. Really nice and smooth male/female vocal duet.
134 - v2 / kirksnosehair / Sacrum** / Cognition… yeah, another discography purchase. I went a little overboard after Roulette v2. IIRC, I think I bought like 40-ish albums after that one. Elite also gave me a Sacrum song in the same round amazingly, but this one gets the edge.
133 - v2 / zook / Demons & Wizards / Fiddler on the Green… I’d totally forgotten about getting this until I re-visited D&W ahead of PPUSA. I love Hani’s voice, and I love me my power ballads. This is far and away their best song from their 2 albums. Fight me. :73109:
132 - v2 / Nekov / Subsignal** / Where Angels Fear to Tread… This song didn't get a discrete ranking, as it was in the qualifying round (which I only gave a yay or nay to qualify), so I’m not sure what score I would’ve given it. Not my favourite Subsignal song, but it got me to spin Beautiful and Monstrous, and that was enough to make it a discography purchase. :tup
131 - v2 / Nekov / Freakeys / One Cup, One Lighter, One Jack. This one is fun as hell - an absolutely frantic and well constructed instrumental. But I can’t say I remember anything about the rest of the album.
It's a sweep for v2 in this batch, and Nekov gets his prediction of 3 in this batch alone. Does he have more to come? Stay tuned!
-
You couldn't be more wrong about that being D&W's best song, but I'll forgive you because you're the coolest :corn
-

Serious as a heart attack, I first had "Fight me (@Katt)"... but thought I'd give others the chance as well. :lol
-
Absolutely the best D&W song. :tup
2/5 for me with this batch, I also know Subsignal although I don't have the album.
-
Well, I guess that means no free album for me :'(

I think you need to remedy that. :)

No Subsignal albums in our local record store, didn't find them during my latest trip abroad either, ordering from abroad is too expensive. This will probably take a while.
-
Ah - I have them all digitally. I do buy some cds but rarely actually play them, so most of the time I stick with digital ones.
-
If that's not D&W best song, it's pretty damn close.
-
It's Crimson King, duh!

I think Jingle is waiting for Sacul's submission. :)

That''ll be a long wait since he struck out on this list.

130 / v1 / Obscure / Place Vendфme** / My Guardian Angel - a fairly run-of-the-mill power ballad, but it’s Kiske. Tim will appreciate.
129 / v1 / wolfking / Vanishing Point** / Closer Apart - vocally, Vanishing Point is just middle-of-the-road for me, but musically they slay. At least it’s not growls.
128 / v4 / TAC / The Silent Wedding / Shadows and Dust – checked out the album, but vocally it just wasn’t dynamic enough – a little too dull and lifeless. Excellent song though.
127 / v3 / wolfking / Almah / Trace of Trait – just listened to the album. Why didn’t I check this out earlier, or do a little research? I had no idea this was Edu on the mic (or totally forgot). A few gems in there, but not likely something that I'll routinely come back to.
126 / v3 / TAC / UFO / Profession of Violence – killer solo, of course.
-
Nice. Two picks and Kiske. Kind of like taking 5 out of 6 points! :lol
-
Little more than halfway to my prediction of 7 songs!

Double Wolf and Tim, nice.

BABYMETAL- Tales of the Destinies
Dammit. I asked. Now I have to listen.
-
No. No you don't.
-
I don’t think Babymetal was the worst song in its round ... let alone the 4th Riylette.
Puppies might be on to something. Though, I’d really have to go back and look at all four roulettes to really have a proper answer.

I sent ManOwaR. It didn’t go well.

I was listening to the next batch this morning, and will get 'em up before the end of the day.

Fun idea for a thread! I;m way too late for the guessing game, but maybe I'll have 3 songs on this list? Nothing so far, so who knows what's gonna happen.

-
But for everyone else ....
Four of these could be summarized as follows – excellent tunes, vocals were very distinctive, but other than a couple of gems, the albums didn’t leave me with much to get overly excited about.
125 / v2 / kirksnosehair / 7 Months / Unspoken Words… vocally, it’s kinda like a sweet blend of Ted Leonard and Roy Khan
124 / v1 / Doc / Wuthering Heights / I Shall Not Yield… Nils has a very distinctive voice – I can see people either loving or hating it. Tim surely hates it. I think Katt loves it… but then again, he loves everything.
123 / v1 / jjrock / Crimson Glory** / Painted Skies… My first exposure to Midnight :omg: :hefdaddy
122 / v4 / Lowdz / Night Mistress / Until The Day Will Dawn… helluva screamer.
121 / v3 / wolfking / Coldspell / Night Falls… I have no idea why a slow plodder like this appealed to me, but it did, and helped Kade win v3 (iirc, this was in his ‘finals’ group of songs).
-
Hey mofo, I love a lot of stuff, but not everything! I can think of quite a number of artists that make my ass itch, some that you love! :lol
Nils has an AWESOME voice, but while Wuthering Heights has some songs I love, for the most part they're whatever to me, my recommended songs could fit on one hand. Their production on their records is atrocious, too. That song is not on my favorites unfortunately but it's not bad.
-

Unfortunately, not. His solostuff is there, as are some of his other projects (eg, Astral Doors)

Might've.

Such a strong album.

Chad, have you tried Crimson Gloryks Strange & Beautiful album? The fan base didn’t like it but I did. It had a Zeppelin vibe to it for me. Haven’t played it in ages. I need to remedy that.

No... I only bought s/t and Transcendence. Playing S&B right now.
-
Strange and Beautiful was a drastic change for Crimson Glory. I can see the Zeppelin vibe now that you mentioned it, but I could never really get into it. Chad just may really dig it though.
-
I just realised I've never checked out that Crimson Glory album.
-
And while I listen to Strange & Beautiful .... I'm like Oprah - UPDATES FOR EVERYONE!!!
120 - v2 / lonestar / Kingcrow** / Right Before… shockingly, I wasn’t taken to this immediately. Can’t remember what did push my further in to them, but Kingcrow f’n rules.
119 - v2 / wolfking / Mercenary / Through Our Darkest Days… vocally, a little too screamy /growlie for me to want to listen to them in bigger doses. Musically, it’s all kind of :metal
118 - v3 / Big Hath / Signal / Arms of a Stranger… lovely melodic rock. Right in the wheelhouse of what I loved as a teenager. The album is Frontiers level “solid”.
117 - v3 / Evermind / Temperance / The Fourth Season… excellent track, but upon further investigation, too much unnecessary growls, and the female lead was fairly mediocre.
116 - v4 / Puppies / Pallas / Ghostdancers… Super enjoyable track, haunting, and that chorus still sticks in my head. But what I hear is a poor man’s IQ, or Sieges Even. Not a bad listen, but I just kept thinking ‘why am I not listening to IQ/Mystery/Enchant/Subsignal <or any number of other Progressive acts that I love>’
-
Yeah, I was surprised at your initial reaction to it. I scored decently enough, but man I thought it'd kill.
-
So many top shelf songs from them man. A roulette staple for many of us when playing.
-
Pretty sure I got Kingcrow in my last roulette.

haha... I actually listened to the entire next batch, had my thing ready to go (even had it 'copied' and was coming in here to post it), then mrs.jingle woke up and it was time to get the days chores done.
Here ya'll go. Double batch to make up for it.
115 - v3 / wolfking / Cans / Beyond the Gates… another one from Kades final submission that eeked him a victory. Nice acoustic intro, before driving into a thunderous cracker of a tune. Bit of a slower paced tune, but great guitar riffage here. Chorus is catchy as fuck – in a good way.
114 - v3 / Zook / Bloodbound / Dominion 5… other than the fact that I now think Urban breed is a pretentious douche-waffle, this is a good song.
113 - v3 / Big Hath / Myrath** / Sour Sigh… got the whole discog from PPUSA merch room. Awesome stuff. I think I liked this tune better after I got ‘in’ to Myrath on the whole.
112 - v4 / Evermind / Mercenary / Redefine Me…. You called it my comrade. I really like the grittiness of the vocals on this track.
111 - v4 / Stadler / Rainbow / Fire Dance… Not sure why I never got ‘in’ to Rainbow – in my teens. The depth of the discography is probably what dissuades me now. This heavily keyboard led track is not at all what I would’ve expected from Rainbow. JLT kills it (naturally).
110 - v4 / Kattoelox / Wuthering Heights / The Desperate Poet…. Frantic paced, and Nils’ voice is right on point here.
109 - v3 / wolfking / Pink Cream 69 / No Way Out… love me anything with David Readman. I really need a ‘best-of’ tracklist recc’n on them – 12 albums to go back digging thru is too overwhelming.
108 - v3 / TAC / Fastway* / Far Far From Home… the Zeppelin vibe is strong with this one.
107 - v1 / Ytse / Conception** / Under a Mourning Star. Excellent track, but there something that just doesn’t entirely click for me with Conception, despite Roy’s excellence
106 - v2 / Bolsters / Big Big Train / Judas Unrepentant …. Just fun as hell.
-

Yeah I guess I have more than four songs too. :lol

I guess it's good to see we are all such a modest bunch. :lol

In regards to Pink Cream 69, I’d just go with everything from Electrified but skipping Endangered - that one was crap.
Thunderdome is their best for me.

Noted... and I'd save those albums to Spotify, but Ceremonial is the only one there. For some f'n reason, nothing between Change and Ceremonial :zeltar:
-
I still think that Games People Play is the best PC69 record, it's the last one with Andi Deris.
-
I’m not a fan of Andy Deris at all. I saw PC69 back in the day supporting someone (possibly Yngwie ) when their first album came out. Didn’t do anything for me but my mate loved them.
-
Yeah the debut is pretty damn nice if you ask me.
-
Last set before the Top 100. I got 5 weeks to get this puppy hammered out, so I'll see if I can fire off daily updates for the next 50 tracks
105 / v1 / WPaPU1 / Dio / Stand Up and Shout… Another classic metal act that was outside of my radar as a teenager. I don’t ever remember any of my metal friends listening to Dio, or him getting any radio airtime. Piss me the fuck off.
104 / v1 / Coz / Gary Moore / Still Got The Blues… same can be said here. I mean, what the fuck? Why did I never hear anything by Moore until I was 40?!?!?
103 / v3 / Lowdz / Abydos / Far Away From Heaven… Andy Kuntz on the vocals, delivering a terrific power ballad. What’s not to love?
102 / v2 / TAC / Lost Horizon / Cry of a Restless Soul….. energetic as hell. Fantastic Power Metal that is all the right amounts and kind of cheese.
101 / v2 / wolfking / Cloudscape** / Under Fire… Mike Anderson’s voice is pure gold for me. Great track, and enough to make me dive into them full on. Rock solid discography
1In v1, I was also adding a random song in each round from Nick’s (now defunct) weekly radio show, as well as from my last.fm recommendations. It was a way for me to shame the participants if they ever lost to a computer algorithm, or Nick.
-
108 - v3 / TAC / Fastway* / Far Far From Home… the Zeppelin vibe is strong with this one.
Good call; sort of not indicative of the album, but a great track nonetheless.
-
I completely fell off Cloudscape before their fourth album was even in the works. I think their best stuff was on Crimson Skies. Shadowland and Psychic Imbalance are bangers
-
That Lost Horizon album is just wonderful.
-
That Lost Horizon album is just wonderful.
Oh yeah. If I ever redid my Top 50, I think I'd have to add it in. It's really stood the test of time, and I go for it quite often.
-
108 - v3 / TAC / Fastway* / Far Far From Home… the Zeppelin vibe is strong with this one.
Good call; sort of not indicative of the album, but a great track nonetheless.
Chad is a bid Zep guy, so I thought he might like it. It's a great tune. I generally consider that album fairly disappointing, not that it didn't have a handful of great tunes, this being one of them, along with Heft and Say What You Will. In fact, Say What You Will is amazing!
-
104 / v1 / Coz / Gary Moore / Still Got The Blues… same can be said here. I mean, what the fuck? Why did I never hear anything by Moore until I was 40?!?!?
Dang I have not heard this song in forever! I used to love this song whenever it was that it came out.
-
100 - v3 / Mystery Machine / Age of Nemesis / Another Existence… damn Mystery person, this was a killer track. Awesome keyboard/guitar unison runs and arpeggios all over this one.
99 - v2 / Bolsters / Thunderstone** / Ghosts of Youth… Rick Altzi. I would say ‘nuff said, but Brent would probably get testy. Altzi + some heavy melodic metal = jingle.happy.
98 - v2 / kirksnosehair / Animations* / The Manhattan Project… terrific instrumental that has a lot going on, but it’s stitched together quite nicely.
97 - v4 / Lethean / Katatonia / Old Heart Falls… is anyone surprised Lethean sent Katatonia? The bigger surprise is how much I liked it. Still meaning to listen to more of them.
96 - v4 / Lethean / Almah / Breathe… double-double from Lethean, and from Almah. Sounds like old-school Angra... wait, wut? :lol Another band I gotta dig a little deeper in with.
-
Yeah, in fact Old Heart Falls isn't even in my Top 3 from that album. I think you may like more from it, especially if you're in the mood for some somber music.
-
that katatonia album is one of the few angsty prog metal records i really really like. it's my favorite of the ones i've heard. big mood around this time of year for me
-
I thought I had figured out that I only had one song on the list, so I guess I didn't read something right. :)
At least I wasn't over confident. :lol
So glad you enjoyed Old Heart Falls. I agree with Evermind that it's not the best song on the album, but my favorite is more of a grower. I hope you enjoy the rest of the album when you listen to it. :)
-
I couldn't really get into that Katatonia album. Nothing even comes close to Night is the New Day.
-
You just haven't gotten into it yet... :)
I love Night is the New Day though. I've read more than a few negative opinions about it (which of course are wrong), so I'm glad you like it so much. :)
-
I couldn't really get into that Katatonia album. Nothing even comes close to Night is the New Day.
NITND was the one Katatonia album I dug until TFOH entered my earholes
-
Jingle is digging Katatonia (at least that one song), now that's a thing I had to read twice to believe it. :D
-
Looks like I should take another listen to it then.
-
Jingle is digging Katatonia (at least that one song), now that's a thing I had to read twice to believe it. :D
TASTESTM!!
I ran thru the album yesterday and this morning. I enjoyed it, but nothing really jumped out to capture my attention. It's a 'moody' album, and I'm just not sure how often I'll be in the mood for it.
-
Neither of the two albums we've been discussing are really "run through" albums. The Fall of Hearts took me some time and I was already a fan. It's one of those albums that you just need to let unfold and develop with subsequent listens. Dead End Kings is like that too, but perhaps it's slightly less so.
-
Let's get today's update in here before I get busy with work.
95 - v4 / Evermind / Lee Abraham / Harbour Lights… I mean, simply gorgeous. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
94 - v1 / wolfking / Edguy / Down to the Devil… it’s like Avantasia’s little brother.
93 - v1 / Zydar / Aerosmith / Taste of India… like a lot of 70s/80s bands I love, I lost touch with Aerosmith in the mid 90s when I was at Uni, then met mrs.jingle in the late 90s. This was a fantastic reminder (and nostalgic feeling) of everything I loved about discovering new music from my teenage years.
92 - v4 / Lowdz / Heir Apparent / Crossing the Border… Queensryche wannabee, for sure. Heir Apparen(tly not), but this was a great tune. I did spin the album a couple times, but don’t really remember much from it.
91 - v1 / jjrock / Silent Force** / Hear Me Calling… DC Cooper doing power metal. Glorious.
-
DTTD is one of my very favorite Edguy songs... I miss Edguy so much
that Lee Abraham song is pretty
-
90 - v3 / Evermind / Rainbow / Black Masquerade… again, totally not what I thought of when I thought ‘Rainbow’… Like, they existed after Dio? I had no idea. :lolpalm:
89 - v3 / bl5150 / Mattador* / Tired… acoustic led ballad. Yum, yum, yum.
88 - v3 / Mystery Machine / Steelhouse Lane / Seven Seas… smooth as silk. I woulda swore this was Toby Hitchcock on the mic.
87 - v4 / Lethean / Madsword / Time in the Ice… dude, the old-school WDADU vibe is strong with this one. Like seriously, did they steal the out-take tapes from DT in 1989? Production even feels like WDADU. Killer guitar solo in here. KILLER!
86 - v3 / wolfking / Ride the Sky / New Protection… beautifully melodic and gravelly vocals, without any harshness. Reminds me so much (both musically and vocally) of another tune you sent that will show up later. Would love to check these guys out, sadly… they aren’t on Spotify.
-
I like not love most of the post-Pump "reunion era" Aerosmith, but Taste Of India is the exception. I love that song.

I bought this record back when it came out in 2006 or 2007 whenever it was... it has some great tracks. "A Smile From Heaven's Eye" is a beautiful, warm, pop-rocker. I find the whole record, overall, to be somewhat average, but it has a lovely warm sound and some fantastic melodic rock/power metal on there like "The Prince of Darkness." I can hook you up if you want. Those two songs I mentioned are my favorites, but the title track rules (and has a music video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDoSWm2fQsE))

I would pretty much agree with what Michael is saying here. That opener that I sent is easily the best song but it has it's moments even if it is average.
Only had 1 album and Uli canned the band with the reason being 'lack of interest' in the band from the public.
-
There’s so much stuff in here I have never even heard of. I’m actually surprised at least one of my sent songs is supposedly in here, although I have a feeling which one it’ll be..

yeah it was a shame cause bjorn's voice is really good and i only ever heard him on beyond twilight's for the love of art and the making outside of this group
-
Well shit, I originally guessed 4 but I won't be surprised if I had like more than 8 songs here now.
-
My songs have dried up. :lol
-
That Madsword song is just awesome. I think the band only had that one album and were already done before I came across it. But it's good stuff.
-
My songs have dried up. :lol
Do you enjoy setting yourself up for fogey jokes Tim?
-
Kingshmegland has hacked Kade's account! :lol

I'm still amazed I won one of your roulettes.
-
85 - v1 / wolfking / Last Tribe** / Wash Away Your Sins… I think this was the first Magnus card you played. And well done. He can do no wrong, and not only did I dive full-on into Last Tribe, by the end of the 1st roulette, I dove full on into pretty much everything Magnus.
84 - v4 / wolfking / Soilwork / Rejection Role… limited growls don’t distract from the goodness here. Love the melodies everywhere here.
83 - v2 / TAC / Waysted* / How The West Was Won…. Melodic rock goodness. Catchy hooks and smooth-as-silk vocals. Really not sure how this doesn’t fall into TAC’s “this blows” bucket. Glad it doesn’t, cuz it’s fantastic. Can’t say I’ve gone back to the album much though.
82 - v4 / kingshmegland / A.C.T. / The Effect… really not sure why I didn’t take more to A.C.T… this is right in my prog-rock wheelhouse. Gonna give this album a spin later this morning to find out why.
81 - v1 / wolfking / Eclipse* / To Mend a Broken Heart… this song should’ve given you the victory in my first roulette, but at the time, something clicked more with the other song it was competing with. The fact that I can’t even remember what song now tells you how well it aged compared to this one
-
Still got to check out Waysted, Tim gave it to me in my roulette too, different song though.
-

Well, I was already a huge fan before they brought Danny Vaughan in. I was a bit taken aback at first, but I played the shit out of this.
Half of the band is UFO!
Still got to check out Waysted, Tim gave it to me in my roulette too, different song though.
I might've used Heroes Die Young from the same album.
-
I think it was The Night of the Wolf or something similar sounding.
-
Oh, OK. That was with the previous singer. That song :metal
-
A.C.T. is so catchy in everything they do.
-
even when they go to the bathroom? What about when they are making sandwiches?
-
Everything about making sandwiches is catchy to Kingshmegland
-

3 out of 5, can't complain here. Last Tribe was a big deal for me musically, listen to them so much when I discovered them and Magnus. Soilwork I was happy to sneak that in there and get a good response. Has become one of my all time favourite bands. Old Eclipse is so good. Way better than the trash they have been doing lately. Can't remember the song either but it was Obscure that got me wasn't it? I think it was close.
-
At the time, yeah ... it was close. I was about to give you the victory, but then on the last couple of listens, her final song 'clicked'. Since it was a best 2 out of 3, it was 2-1.
Now though.... 2 of your songs are on this list; none of hers made it (thought, she's got a few still to come).
-
Everything about making sandwiches is catchy to Kingshmegland
My bitches make my sandwiches.
-
Shit... I typed this up yesterday, but then forgot to post it.
80 - v3 / Mystery Machine / Hiberia** / Tiger Punch… man this is one frantic-as-fuck tune. High octane energy all over this one.
79 - v3 / Big Hath / Harvest / Roundabout… this is hella fun, and again I’m thinking (there are 78 songs better than this on this list!?!?!). Not sure why I never listened to the album, but I definitely gotta rectify that immediately (and I did... meh, not terribly impressive)
78 - v2 / nekov / Dominici / The Calling… Better than anything he ever did with DT. Any advice as to whether the trilogy is worth buying, because only Part 3 is on Spotify. Asking for a friend.
77 - v1 / King / Magic Pie* / Without Knowing Why… you were often hit-and-miss with your eclectic prog choices. This was a hit. The rest of their discography doesn’t do a ton for me, but this is a great album – and this tune isn’t even the best one on the album
76 - v3 / bl5150 / Universe Effects* / Equilibrium… this is one of only a handful of songs that ever got a rating of 9 or higher. It didn’t age quite THAT well, but it’s a beauty of a tune and album.
-
Another entry for me? That means I'm not winning a free album :'(
Anyways, I would recommend buying the second album of the trilogy. If you like the third one then go ahead and buy that one too. However, unless my memory is failing me, the first record is nothing like the other two. It is quite uninteresting and boring.

Yeah the first one is all acoustic.

That Magic Pie was from your first Roulette I was in if I remember correctly.

You have a keen perception of the blatantly obvious... that's what the "v1" means. :lol
-
Double post, for a double update.
75 - v4 / jjrock88 / Impellitteri / Lost in the Rain… goddamn dat opening riff! And scream! And shredding! Bonnet sure could wail 30 years ago.
74 - v3 / bl5150 / Millienium / Hourglass… I mean, it’s Jorn-fuckin-Lande. ‘nuff said. Bit of a plodder, but still a great tune.
73 - v4 / Puppies / Anubis Gate / The End of Millenium Road… love this vocally… middle part drags on a bit, but it’s bookended with goodness. Vocally this is damn appealing (dayum, it’s the guitar player from Pyramaze!). I tried the album, but don’t remember much about it.
72 - v3 / wolfking / Machine Men* / No Talk Without the Giant… great tune, even if I don’t reach for this band very often.
71 - v3 / Big Hath / Leverage / Rise / Wolf and the Moon… good thing I’m not lactose intolerant. Greatness in the chorus, rhythm riffs, vocally melodies – all catchy as fuck. IIRC, the rest of the album was just too much cheese.
-

Killer song. I also struggled to get through the album.
-
That is Rob Rock singing on Lost in the Rain. I believe Bonnet joined the band on the next album or two.
-
there's my four. Guess I'm done now.

Well see, now that's what I thought - but goddamn Google told me this tune was released on Stand in Line... which has Bonnet listed as the lead singer.
I'm as confused as a baby in a topless bar.
there's my four. Guess I'm done now.
With 70 songs to go, you're gonna need to guess again. Bigly.
-
Miss a day, and I almost get punted to page 2!
70 - v4 / lonestar / Kaipa / Our Silent Ballroom Band… this is like a 7-course meal served up by our chef. All goodness here that just builds magnificently upon itself.
69 - v4 / Train / The Great Discord / Darkest Day… sooo good. The lull in the middle doesn’t detract too much. Very cool/emotive solo, to provide complement to the vocals and hooks
68 - v2 / TAC / Michael Kiske / Do I Remember A Life… I told Tim right from the start this would be a grower. And it has been over the years. There’s still a certain je ne sais quois that doesn’t work for me - I think maybe the acoustic intro is just too plain for me; and there’s something in Kiske’s tone with some of the notes he belts out here. Can’t put my finger on it though.
67 - v4 / jj / Alice Cooper / Roses on White Lace… for the ‘meat and potatoes’ rock/metal guy that your submissions usually fell in to, more than a few times you dropped a melt-in-your-mouth filet and a loaded baked potato – with a the smoothest NY cheesecake smothered in a chocolate ganache. This was one of those times.
66 - v3 / Bolsters / Slash / Myles Kennedy / Beneath The Savage Sun… Myles has such a perfectly suited voice for this kind of music with Slash’s riffage.
I'll try to get the next update posted later tonight.
-
Roses On White Lace is an all time Alice track. Seriously. In the Top 20 easily, but closer to Top 10.
You're just not a Kiske guy...It's ok. That's an amazing track and a TAC Top 3 all time song.
-
Word on that Kiske song. TAC sent that to me in one of my roulettes and I'd guess that's in the top 20 at least of all songs I've ever gotten in a roulette.
-
Turned out I didn't have any time to myself last night. I do have the next group after this one all typed up as well, so that should be up this evening. I'll just space 'em out a little.
65 - v1 / Zydar / Mando Diao / Gloria… goddamn this deserved better than the 6.5/10 I gave it initially. Though, I still stand by my description that it sounds like the Village People recreating the vibe of Copacabana (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=32265.msg1286946#msg1286946)… yes, that’s precisely what I said 7 years ago, and it still stands. However, the ‘fun-ness’ of this tune has never worn off.
64 - v2 / nekov / Yargos** / The Guilded Cage… helluva ‘cheat’ here, using ‘Mac’. A very different style than Threshold, and it’s suited very well with Mac on the mic.
63 - v4 / TAC / Crystal Gates / Shadowborn… musically, it’s a great blend of symphonic and cheese. Vocally, the opera style is pretty good – I just am constantly comparing all female opera vocalists to Floor and Tarja.
62 - v1 / Coz / Dokken / Kiss of Death… I had this perception that Dokken was ‘too’ metal for me back in the day. I have no idea why or how. Another band that just didn’t get airplay or exposure – via my friends, or the radio stations I listened to. :sadpanda:
61 - v1 / WPaPU / It Bites* / Map of the Past… hella strange song to follow Kiss of Death. Keyboard heavy mellow-prog. John Mitchell is a gem of a vocalist.
-
Cool. The Crystal Gates is a nice album.
-
Chad, did you get into more Dokken after Coz sent that to you?
-

I grabbed a 'best-of'. For the 70s/80s acts like this that slipped past me, there's just too much to go diving full-bore in to.
-

Bonnet was on Stand In Line and that was the first Impelliteri album/ep. I saw Bonnet live a few weeks ago and he played Stand In Line and Goodnight and Goodbye.

If you have a best of you probably only need Back For The Attack. The best tracks from before that album will be on it and nothing that came after was in the same league.
-
Judging from all the songs so far it's clear Chad needs more music from me. I mean, fucking Dokken?!
Just playing. Kind of. Not entirely. :rollin

I don't know why, but Dokken never clicked with me. When I was in high school, my best friend was a Dokken fan; we did "Into The Fire" in our band. Ugh.

Yes, Back For The Attack and another cd with their best other songs is all the Dokken one needs. But Back For The Attack is a killer record nonetheless. :metal

It takes all kinds, Kade... :lol

You shut your whore mouth.
I still love you though.
-
Dokken is a great band and has some awesome tunes...Kiss of Death, Unchain the Night, Lightning Strikes Again, Dream Warriors, Tooth & Nail. Plus Beast from the East is an excellent live album
-
You shut your whore mouth.
That never gets old (I'm being serious.)

And tonight's update:
60 - v3 / Zook / In This Moment* / Mechanical Love … Zook my man, you were absolutely hit or miss with me. More than a few duds (IE… twice – Into Eternity and Iced Earth) but when you nailed it, boy did you nail it. This album is great, but iirc, the rest of the discography is very different
59 - v3 / Big Hath / Odyssey / Amon-Ra… this one didn’t score too well in the competition, and initially I had it rated rather low – like near the bottom of this Top 150. But then it clicked somehow, and I just found myself moving it up and up and up. Swano is fantastic here, and the melancholy mood and heavy-af riffs are a huge turn on now. I request some advice… is the rest of the album non-growlie? It ain’t on Spotify, so I’m wondering if I risk making a deaf-purchase?
58 - v1 / Lonestar / IQ** / The Wrong Side of Weird… lonestar has the distinction of having the very first song I ever listened to in a Roulette, and man was it a beauty. The vibe that the main riff holds to The Song Remains The Same is undeniable. Sadly, he still got torched in his 1-on-1 matchup, and there were still 3 songs better than this in my very first round. In fact, half of the songs in that very first round made the cut here – almost all of them in the Top 50. Still... this got me into the entire discography.
57 - v4 / Bolsters / Edenbridge / Myearthdream…. Awesome opening riff, great use of accompanying / rhythm keyboards. Love the female vocal style – she doesn’t get operatic, but really clean and smooth in the high end of the register.
56 - v4 / Bolsters / Defecto* / Excluded… not the best song from this album, but it was good enough to be a Spotify-keeper.
-

That's really interesting. Makes me want to check out that round. I'll take a link if you get a chance.
Lonestar also has the distinction of getting me started in roulettes. He was nice enough to send me an invite for one of his roulettes. I was actually honored to be asked, so there was no way I was saying no. So glad I played.
-
Still don't know why it took me four roulettes to drop Kaipa on you.

Ffs s that's the only album of theirs that isn't on Spotify lol... The only other one I'm familiar with is Sattyg which is pretty solid as well. Talk to Splent, he's a big fan of theirs I think.
-
I saw you, Spence and especially Mason loose your shit seeing them live.
Chad was like that weird bun in a Big Mac. Fucking joyous being between beef.

no growls on the entire album I believe. I think it's a stellar album. First 7 or so songs are covers and the last 3 are originals.

Last batch before cracking into the Top 50.
55 - v4 / King / Cell15* / Faith Without Works, Pt 2… such an uplifting story behind this guy. Really nice keyboard led prog to boot.
54 - v4 / Evermind / Wolverine / Your Favorite War… I’d taken a shot with Wolverine before, and it didn’t click. This tune did – and very much surprised me that it did.
53 - v4 / lowdz / Magnum / Les mort Dansant… Bob only worked for me in Avantasia, until I heard this song. Changed my opinion on Magnum. Sonic beauty.
52 - v3 / bl5150 / Heavy Bones* / Where Eagles Fly… virtually flawless acoustic-led power ballad.
51 - v3 / Big Hath / H.E.A.T. / Living on the Run… where has this been all my life? Melodic Rock bands starting with H seem to be right in my wheelhouse! The chorus is such an ear-worm, and the entirety of the rhythms.
-
I got Cell 15 from King too. It came close to winning the round.
I mentioned they reminded me of a cross of Joe Perry and Styx.
Man With A Gun was the song.
-
That album is a really cool, personal account of the singer and his redemption with life.
-
That Magnum album is such a wonderful classic.
The H.E.A.T album is also excellent.
-
I only know H.E.A.T's first album but it SLAPS. Amazing glam rock/AOR/whatever the hell you call it music. Super fun to drive or work out to

It is so cringe how high Paul Rudd holds the bass in that film. Funny movie though.

Not much more from me the last few updates. I wonder if I've dried up like Tim.

I think they sell things for that problem.

It's called pacing.
-
Think I’ve had 3 so far. Trying to remember what I’ve sent that could be better than Les Mort Dansant 🤔
-
Well, you won my 2nd roulette, so look there!
Top 50 baby!!! Comments a little deeper now, so only 3 per entry.
50 - v3 / Zook / HolyHell* / The Fall… once again, Zook killin it. Lead singer Maria Breon – why the hell isn’t this act more known!?!? I mean, I very much like Delain and all, but she slays Charlotte, and the symphonic/metal is just a touch superior. Sadly, they have just the one album (and a couple of EPs). Such a fucking gorgeous voice (and easy on the eyes too). Simple melody, power/symphonic perfection, and a killer – albeit short – guitar solo.
49 - v4 / Evermind / Karmakanic / Send a Message from the Heart… naturally, the Flower Kings vibe is strong. Loved the vocal harmonies, so many fantastic elements here – the piano arpeggios, multiple guitar and keyboard solos and styles, and Göran Edman – so much that he’s been on which I love. You know an ‘epic’ song is truly epic when 20 minutes passes by and it didn’t even feel like it.
48 - v3 / Big Hath / AEnimus / Seven Circles of Hell… dat opening riff!! :metal Some solid screaming going here, without it sounding scream-o. Nice deep rich sound coming out of this. Meat and potatoes metal that scratched an itch. Unfortunately, the rest of the album was rather generic and mostly uninteresting.
-
I think Ev sent me that Karmakanic album in my first roulette and I still love it. Kind of a hard listen for the way I listen to music but it's really really good. GE's voice is awesome.
-
Hell yeah man, this Karmakanic album rocks. Please listen to it as soon as possible.

From my favorite Karmakanic album!

Well, you won my 2nd roulette, so look there
It’s the ManOwaR isn’t it 😀😀😀😀
-
is that 7 for me now? I think I only sent 12 songs on that roulette so that's a pretty good hit rate so far. Are you also including secondary songs that were sent but not scored in the V3 roulette?

Yes. All songs received ... qualifiers, final rounds, everything. I count 17 songs submitted by the Hathster.

I'm racking my brain to figure out what else I got coming up. There's Orphaned Land, and that one random song I happened to find that made you cry, but stuck on anything else.

<in my best Casey Kasem impression> And now, on with the countdown:
47 - v1 / Doc / Kevin Gilbert / Song for a Dead Friend… this was in the “emotion” round, and Mason was clear and away the winner. Most emotionally provoking song ever. Not just in my roulette’s, but ever (imo). Title says it all. Blessfully, I’ve never had to experience this first hand, and hope I never do. I’ve seen this song sent in other roulette’s, and think it’s always won the round. Such a powerful song.
46 - v1 / Obscure / Darkology** / Violent Vertigo… Kelly f’n Carpenter. Hit and f’n miss for me, as he’s been on some rather mediocre projects. This isn’t one of those – well, the rest of the discography isn’t as strong as this, but this song gives me everything I love about his voice and style – Raspy and screamy without being harsh and scream-o.
45 - v4 / TAC / Nahtram / The Wolf … almost the best instrumental you submitted in my Roulettes. Heavy-af, lots of great things going on here. Not sure what more I can say that I didn’t say last year at this time – “So many different and diverse parts to this song - nice keyboard intro, heavy as shit, slower/acoustic breakdown, great keyboard and guitar riffs and licks all over the place. Complex writing and talented execution. Nice piece of ass this one was”
-
I know for sure I at least have 2 more songs that will feature.
Same.

I know I have at least one more.

Oh jesus.... I just have one list, so to parse it out by the first 100 songs ain't no easy feat. In no particular order:
TAC - 8
Hath - 6
Wolfking - 14
Cheffy-poo - 3
JJ - 6
Brent - 5
Bolsters - 5
Evermind - 7
King - 3
Lowdz - 6
Anyone else want their count?

That's my fault; I didn't realize that it was only the number so far. Mine was in fact 1, and I knew that. I am uncertain, from the hints in previous posts, what my total is. I thought, from what was written before, that it was more than 2, but increasingly, I think I'm "1".
(You don't have to answer; I'm just laying out my - lack of - thought process. :))
-
I think I'm done, I don't remember anything I sent scoring higher than Karmakanic.
-
44 - v2 / Lowdz / Alter Bridge* / Cry Of Achilles… I really should listen to Myles Kennedy fronted stuff more often. What a rich and full sound he delivers. Overall, I find Alter Bridge to be a whole lot of fun and super enjoyable – I don’t think I’ve ever heard an AB song that I didn’t like, but generally speaking, I don’t ever think “Hey, I’m in the mood for some AB”. Straight up modern-day rock is what they sound like to me, despite what Wikipedia describes them as – “Alternative metal; progressive metal; post-grunge”. Like, wtf does that even mean? Hard Rock. Period. And this surely delivers. Pretty basic rock recipe, but super tasty none-the-less.
43 - v4 / King / Mile Marker Zero / 2001 … Great opening melody – I don’t know what I’m more turned on by, the guitars, or the keyboards. Then it gets all mellow and focuses on the vocal delivery – smooth as Golden. Some really tasty drum fills, time signature switches, and a catchy chorus. Every musician here gets a fair shot at showing off. All of which is stitched together marvellously. I gave the album a go, and it had a couple of gems, but otherwise it was fairly uneventful.
42 - v4 / Lowdz / Fiction Syxx / Given Sight… really nice track, though the album (and this year’s release) left me a little limp. This checks all the boxes of everything I’d expect out of Melodic Rock Records… catchy verses and choruses, dual key/guitar solo, a somewhat flashy rhythm section that does a little more than just keep the 4/4 beat, and a SOLID vocalist. ;D
-
That Alter Bridge song is amazing. They just don't sustain my interest though.
-
Top 5 AB song.

Just picked up the new Alter Bridge.
Chad, I'm surprised. I love that CD.

I want to check the new AB just to see who I agree with from the opinions I have received so far. They all fall into one of two categories:
1) Awesome - very melodic. Best album in the discog
2) Production is that bad it's unlistenable
:lol
-
I haven't played it yet. :lol
I'm in the "These bands need to stop clipping the shit out of everything" club.

Give the Slash stuff or his solo record a spin. I'm a Myles fan boy - I even stood outside the High Line Ballroom in NY hoping to meet him; got the slip by a roadie in a rookie mistake - but I find AB way down the list. I LOVE the Slash material, and really like the solo record. AB... I get tired of it so easy. I just got Fortress and the new one on... Saturday, and I've made it through five songs on Fortress and I needed a break. Though unquestionably, Cry Of Achilles is a great, great, tune.
-
Myles is at the very bottom of my tolerance for vocalist tone.
-
I'm yet to check the new album yoo. The Last Hero may be my fav album from them, despite the production.

Humming along ....
41 / v3 / Big Hath / Black Tora / Fuel My Hunger …. Goddamn, this somehow slipped past me for the past couple of years, because it was your ‘mulligan’ submission, and despite how good it was, I never bothered rating it since it fell second to the other song you submitted that round (stay tuned). This is great power metal that pounds away without any cheese whatsoever – very similar to Hiberia (but better). Unfortunately, the rest of the album didn’t captivate me the way that this track did.
40 / v4 / Bolsters / Burnclear* / Rattle the Cage… Vocally, the low range sounds a little like Roy Khan, while the high range reminds me of Mike Anderson. As such, the Cloudscape vibe is undeniable. Very tasty prog/power, and one of the reasons you were able to over-take Evermind to snatch victory. Couple of semi-duds on the album, but overall this was a beauty!
39 / v1 / King / Presto Ballet** / One Tragedy at a Time… up to this point in my v1, you were honking on Bobo. I was stunned… agast… disappointed. Then you dropped this gem on me. Instant love, and the reason that I’d invited you. IIRC this was the round winner. The atmospheric mood in the middle, and outro from just melt my prog ears with joy. So warm and wholesome. Makes me feel like I just got a big ole Shmegland-like sonic hug.
-
Saw Presto Ballet open for DT in 2010(?) whenever they were doing the tour with Maiden, it was one of the few headlining shows they did. Enjoyed their set. Thought they had talent and a future.
-
love that Black Tora song, but yeah the rest of it is fairly pedestrian. I have a whole bunch of "one hit wonders" where a band struck gold with one song but the rest of the album or discography is mediocre.
-
I'm going to guess that is my last song on this thread. Chad am I right?
-

You aren't left.
-
Ok... yesterday was a bit of a dud. Not sure this one is any more exciting.
38 - v1 / wolfking / Dream Evil** / In Flames You Burn… now THIS gets the blood flowing, and my mood pumping.
37 - v2 / Lowdz / Leverage / Dreamworld…. Ditto, with a lot more keyboards
36 - v4 / TAC / Eternal Of Sweden / Surrounded By Shadows…. Ditto again, but less keyboards.
I mean there’s not much more to say about these three tunes other than they all rocked my world in slightly different ways. Upbeat and uptempo, heavy and catchy riffs, dreamy vocals …. Everything clicked. Three winners that are all right up my alley- but only Dream Evil caught my attention beyond the submitted song… or maybe I just had looser standards back then. :lol

Surrounded By Shadows is a rockin' song.

That Leverage album is awesome.
-
35 - v4 / Bolsters / The Ralph** / Next In Line… it was hard to take them seriously, until about 8 seconds into the song. :omg Dat opening riff grabs ya by the short and curlies, and doesn’t let go. This is the kind of sound that JP describes as ‘chocolate cake’. Crunchy/djenty riffs, with awesome supporting vocal melodies do well with my ears 7 days a week, and twice on Sunday. Another round winner for the Ausie that propelled him to victory. Their discography isn’t very deep (2 EPs; 1 full album), but everything rocks just as hard as this tune.
34 - v1 / last.fm / Seventh Wonder** / The Angel Maker…. I had to give a nod to this one, even though it's not a DTF'r that made the submission. Like including entries from Nick’s radio show, I was also doing the same from last.fm recommendations. However, it's inclusion is because it introduced me to the glory that is Seventh Wonder and Tommy Karevik. Not their greatest song by any means, but it was the gateway to bigger and better things. The chorus here is still one of my favourite melodies, and sticks in my head for days whenever I hear it – which is just fine.
33 - v3 / senecadawg2 / Voodoo Circle / Broken Heart Syndrome… the perfect blend of melodic rock, with a slightly heavy edge. I tried to dive in with a few albums of theirs, but I didn’t have the wherewithal to go thru all four albums to digest / discern what is good vs great. Maybe I should give it another shot.
-
This is getting interesting....So i'm pretty sure I got at least those three still coming, Orphaned Land, Beautiful Sin, and Graphite Symphony, but I figured at least OL and GS would be up already. Didn't think they'd be this high on the list, especially Orphaned Land, so maybe there's something I'm missing. GS I can see being ranked this high since I hit that emotional G-Spot so perfectly, and I'm pretty sure Maggy will be a top ten track.

I think it's actually one of the best SW songs. Mercy Falls is great and it's my favourite SW album, but when it comes to standalone songs, I think this is great.

haha YES!
Sit on it, Potsie!
-
Double entry to make up for some lost time.
32 - v3 / bl5150 / Silent Call** / First to Know… big fan of Andi Kravljača’s voice. And it was a nice surprise to see them with a new release just a few weeks ago. Schwing!
31 - v3 / Big Hath / Jaded Heart / Ain't A Perfect World… see comment above re: Voodoo Circle. I really should try and dig into more of the Bormann fronted stuff. Big Bormann fan here...JH, Redrum, Alyson Avenue, Powerworld, Silent Force. Really should check out his solo stuff.
30 - v2 / Lowdz / Brazen Abbot** / Eye of the Storm… the diversity of singers across the discography is what appealed to me here. Pretty much every one is a winner, including JLT on this track.
Like one of the previous batches of songs, I’m running out of unique things to say about songs that are – for the most part – similar in the ways that they appeal to me. Awesome singer; excellent writing, strong melodies and rhythms, an excellent blend of prog and power metal. These three fit that bill.
-
Apparently I've been eliminated! :lol
-
I'm a fan of JLT Rainbow; would I like that Brazen Abbott?
-
where's my next song @Chad
-
I'm a fan of JLT Rainbow; would I like that Brazen Abbott?
I think that'd be a hard yes. Other vocalists on Brazen Abbot include Tony Harnell, Goran Edman, and Erik Martensson.
-
I underestimated with my guess of 7. Still going.
-
29 - v4 - Kattoelox / Time Requiem / Sin to Sin… you may have been shocked to take top spot in round 1 here, but no more shocked than me. What a great tune. And with Goran Edman fronting them and Richard Andersson on the keys, I’m stunned none of the ‘hard rock’ crew has talked ever about them (uhh…. Brent, c’mon now!). Beauty of an opening keyboard sequence, slappa da bass, and unison arpeggios. Need to check out their earlier albums with Apollo P on the mic, Jonas R on bass, and Peter W on drums :omg: What a hidden gem of a band!
28 - v3 - Zook / Shear* / Turmoil …. Zook my dood, I’m bummed you’re not following here. You dropped some absolute fucking gems on me in this and the 2nd roulette. Love love LOVE Alexa’s voice. The build up in the chorus give me chills, especially layered on top of the frantic guitar riff. Vocally, it’s a ton like Maggy Luyten, without the gruff French coarse-ness that Maggy brings. More like a smooth Finnish finish :lol. Instrumental section is nothing flashy, but perfectly proggy-power. Overall, Shear is like a heavier and edition of Mindmaze.
27 - v3 - Evermind / Galahad / Empires Never Last…. Talk about slappin da bass! Great atmospheric / background elements to not let the mood get too melancholic. And the chorus – vocally and musically, it could is easily one of the most memorable chorus’ of any song on this list. The bounce back-and-forth between an almost jazzy story-telling vibe with a few bars of metal riffing is cool as fuck.
-
ALWAYS REMEMBER
EMPIRES
NEVER LAST
Man I forgot I sent this. The song (and the whole album tbh) is amazing. Good to see some appreciation for this. I honestly thought I was done for.
-
Wow! Truly didn't expect that. Glad you like that song so much. Please check out the rest of that record, Optical Illusion. I like the song The Talisman even more than Sin To Sin. Also :lol @ keeping the Toe in there.
-
Well, that was your handle back then.
-
I'm starting to think I missed a song, cause I don't think Orphaned Land would be this high. You liked it, but it didn't even win the round. Graphite Symphony? Sure. Maggie? Top ten, maybe top 5. But Orphaned land, it just doesn't seem to be a top twenty song with all the other more Chad-like songs.
Also, I guess that Epysode will get no. 1

Ok, let me relieve RJ of his mental conundrum.
26 - v4 / lonestar / Orphaned Land / The Cave… see, this is why I have you in roulettes. You may not have always done well, but you are fearless and have no problem taking a chance. Sometimes it works, sometimes not-so-much.
You've given me more than enough discoveries outside of roulette'g to lighten my wallet, so it's these risky choices that I love getting from you. And it’s songs like this that make it worthwhile. I’d always written off Orphaned Land (and still don’t think they’d be my jam other than some isolated songs). This one knocked my socks off thought. I dig a lot of the bands with the middle-eastern metal sound, and this slayed. Minimal growls, that are exactly what I can tolerate with growls (“tasteful and appropriate”) don’t distract from my love of this at all. I tried the rest of the album, and nothing held a candle to this one. And despite not winning the round, it was an EXTREMELY strong round – this tune was better than more than a few subsequent round winners. Tough competition to start v4.
25 - v4 / lonestar / Graphite Symphony / Divided Entity… Not so sure this brought me to tears, but it did get me right in the feelz - the feeling that I would’ve had to cunt-punch you for this song if not for the fact that I’d come out of the worst of my depression, and things with me and mrs.jingle were no longer at our own low point. The “what in the actual fuck” moment I had upon first listen of this song was out of this world – mostly because it was YOU sending it. This song perfectly summed up my marriage about 4 years ago – and the fact you were completely oblivious to the lyrics gave me a second ‘what in the actual fuck’ moment. More of a chuckle the 2nd time though.
24 - v3 / bl5150 / Withem* / Miracle … right in the prog-power breadbasket here. Strong wailing vocals, virtually perfect guitar riffs, catchy as fuck chorus, great (albeit rather short) instrumental section, very strong guitar / keyboard solos. I mean, this is virtual perfection. The rest of the album was almost as strong, but their sophomore release was a bit of a let down – still good, but just a bit weaker.
-
That's the one thing I didn't consider, all the stuff I've sent to you randomly over the years instead of in roulettes, a ton of that would've scored very well. We have a habit of sharing our best stuff when we find it instead of squirreling it away for future uses, like the last one I sent to you out of the blue, Ark Ascent, probably would've done well.
Now to see where Maggie finishes...
-
I checked out Withem a couple days ago and it was just meh - but it wasn't that song. That OL song however slaps.
-
The Cave is amazing for sure, yeah.
-
Withem is pretty good, actually.
I cannot get into Orphaned Land.

I cannot get into Orphaned Land.
As a whole, I agree with you. Give that song a shot though - unless of course you're not 'in' to the middle-eastern vibe. Then it won't matter.
@ RJ... yeah, Ark Ascent would've slayed. Top 5 AOTY at the moment for me.
-
See, and it's been like that for the last 8 years...I don't have anything good to send in roulettes cause when I come across Chad-worthy stuff, I send it right away like a proper homie should. :tup
-

Too growls for me generally.

23 - v3 / senecadawg2 / The Paralydium Project* / New Frontier… slow build, crunch-af guitar riffs, complex writing, beautiful execution. This is prog-metal greatness. And (I didn’t know it until just recently), the band is made up of mostly Dynazty members. Who knew they could deliver something this complex and proggy. I think this might actually have been my first exposure to ‘djent’ guitar riffs, and it wow’d the fuck out of me. Dream Theater wishes they could write music this good nowadays (2015 release). It was just from a quick 3-song EP, but they’ve come out of the woodworks just within the last couple of weeks, rebranded themselves as Paralydium. YAY! No longer just a project. Very much looking forward to more from them.
22 - v4 / wolfking / Amorphis / Amongst Stars … this was a virtual dead-heat with Orphaned Land above in v4Rd1 for a lot of the same reasons – and if you recall correctly, was in 3rd place behind two songs already mentioned. Which goes to the point that this song has aged the best amongst them in the past year. Take out the middle-east portion of the writeup on Orphaned Land, and that's pretty much what you’ve got with this song …. PLUS Anneke VG. :hefdaddy Why the hell didn’t you send this tune to Tim in the chick round!?!?!? Missed opportunity for you there. As Katt would say, this song slaps.
21 - v2 / wolfking / Sonata Arctica / Don't Say A Word … Still can’t get in to Sonata as a whole, but I’m sure a ‘best-of’ would suit me just fine. I saw them live a couple years ago with Kamelot, and it was a good show. Great pace to this tune, with a certain fervour to the verses, leading up to an anthemic sounding chorus that just inspires a vision of a concert floor jumping/moshing in unison. Nothing overly flashy with this one, but sometimes less is more, and the KISS principle applies nicely here.
-
Please let me craft you a Sonata 'best of' EP with Don't Say A Word as the centerpiece which dictates the other tracks I pick :2metal: I'm drooling at the possibilities.

What would that be?
- Play good, old-fashioned hard rock, well-played but with few frills?
- Bang thousands of women and keep a book of Polaroids of each of them?
- Release a greatest hits record every 12 months?
- Name every tour the "Farewell Tour"?
- Slap their logo on everything from salt shakers to Swifters?
- Consistently kick ass live for the better part of 45 years?
Haha, just wanted to be in there somewhere.
By the way, I just noticed that "KISS" is a portmanteau of "KIck aSS". :metal

I was initially gonna pick songs in line with DSAW but since Ev wants to make one I'm going to make one that shows the wild and adventurous side of Sonata. Some really awesome creative stuff in there that you might not listen to if you were to just, er, 'play the hits' as it were.
That's a fancy way of saying, "You're getting 2 very different EPs from me for this one because of their extensive and weird discography" :rollin
EDIT: Wait no you're not. Spotify doesn't have their first 3 albums because they're lame, so you'll just get the one.

I'm not using Spotify then because I was absolutely going to include some stuff from the first three albums, huh.

Hmm yeah. Gonna probably rethink my approach, since Winterheart's is my #3 album of all time. :corn

Give me the song names then ... I'll go out to the quasi-legal places I can get music to sample - rather than spending $1/song.

:lol Reminds me a bit on The Office:
Dwight: Aw, man, is that a Prism Duro-Sport?
Pam: You've seen one of these?
Dwight: Yeah, they're like an i-Pod only they're better 'cause they're chunkier and more solid.
Pam: Roy gave it to me for Christmas. I'm trying to figure out how to put songs on it.
Dwight: Oh, no no no. Don't go there. I know this Russian website where you can download songs for two cents a piece.
Pam: Really?
Dwight: Yeah, I'll write down the address for you. Only, the only thing is... is that all the songs are in Russian.
-
Actually for me (or I suppose my VPN) it does have all the albums so I'll be going with that. Hopefully it's the same in Canada.
-
I didn't send Amongst Stars to TIm because it's not 2/3 female vocals.
I'm back baby however with two entries. Completely forgot I sent Don't Say A Word. Wonderful song.

I had AMongst Stars on my list of songs to send you in that roulette...great track with the added bonus of Anneke.

The album is on my list for consideration for album of the decade, just tremendous. Was really bummed I missed that tour cause of fucking night shifts. (the tour with Anneke that is, I saw them on the previous headline tour for Queen of Time front row and they fucking slayed)

It could be the most complete Amorphis album for me. Skyforger was my first and still love it a lot, but the new one seems to be my new go to album from them.
-
Skyforger is such a fucking good album. At least the first 7-8 songs. Under The Red Cloud and Queen of Time have some good songs but nothing quite like that Skyforger run. Wish they had another that clicked with me like that record.

Yeah it is indeed a beautiful album in all aspects.

I'll wait until both Evermind and Kattelox have sent their Sonata songs and then maybe I'll add a few. :)

20 - v3 / bl5150 / The Poodles** / Before I Die…. The real appeal here is Jakob Samuel’s voice – dude’s got a smooth as 18-year old scotch voice. It’s a very simply written and performed track – again, nothing overly flashy. A perfect metal tune that’s driven by absolutely some absolutely beautiful melodies.
19 - v4 / Indiscipline / Temperance* / Daruma's Eyes (Pt. 1)... Nice keyboard intro, that leaves a slight pause before a fantastic buildup into all hell breaking loose! That main and recurring guitar melody/riff (that doubles as the chorus melody) gives me chills. Italian prog-power metal… how can you go wrong? Well, you didn’t - it’s the best song from this most recent roulette of mine. Helluva instrumental section as well. Heavy, lots of diverse pieces to it that are woven together. 7 minutes of bliss.
18 - v3 / Elite / Theocracy** / I Am… hope it was worth the wait, and I hate to break it to you, but this is the only Elite entry. But holy shit, it’s a beaut. It didn’t score super high in the roulette – I think because I had a skewed opinion of what Theocracy was. YtseBitsy sent them (Laying the Demons to Rest) in v1, and I did not like it at all – still not a big fan of that song. This was way better, and over the years, has become my favourite Theocracy song. That vocal breakdown in the middle – and seeing Matt perform it live at PPUSA was absolutely mind blowing. I ended up buying their “I Am” tee-shirt. Matt is a definite Top 5 male-vocal crush at the moment. He could sing recipes for me and I’d swoon. You had quite a few other ‘bubble’ songs on the list (Sacrum, Myrath, Andromeda) but over the years, it seems our tastes diverged just a few degrees.
-
Very surprised to see Elite sending a Theocracy song... wow. That's a good one. I think Laying The Demon To Rest is a freaking great song (better than I Am, personally, and one of my fave Theocracy songs in general) and I was so happy they played it and several other favorites of mine at PPUSA this year. Matt Smith killed it live. Great band.
-
I’m actually surprised at least one of my sent songs is supposedly in here, although I have a feeling which one it’ll be..
Turns out I was right (with no way to prove it)! I figured it would be the only song that would have a shot at being in this list. Must have been years ago that I sent it. It’s honestly the only Theocracy song that I ‘remember’, but I recall it being very good obviously.
Yay!
-
My 3rd roulette was in 2015... so yeah, a few years back.
-
In my excuse, this Temperance song didn't exist when I sent them to you. :)
-
I'll wait until both Evermind and Kattelox have sent their Sonata songs and then maybe I'll add a few. :)
Here's what I sent.
Sonata Arctica for Dummies Chad
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3VP4xNqWpMf7povdAypODt
1. Abandoned, Pleased, Brainwashed, Exploited [Winterheart's Guild]
2. Gravenimage [Winterheart's Guild]
3. 8th Commandment [Ecliptica]
4. The End of This Chapter [Silence]
5. It Won't Fade [Unia]
6. Don't Say a Word [Reckoning Night]

9. Flag in the Ground [The Days of Grays]
10. Kingdom for a Heart [Ecliptica]
11. The Misery [Winterheart's Guild]
12. Blood [Pariah's Child]
I... don't really think Chad would be much into progressive Sonata. I picked my share of progressive with two Unia tracks and I feel that's about enough for what I know of Chad's tastes.
We'll see!
-
It's funny because I expected Ev to send more progressive tracks, so after seeing what he sent I chose some more... questionable? picks :lol but some of my all-time favorite Sonata songs are on my submission.

Things were a little hectic yesterday. Here's one batch, and I intend to have another one up later tonight so I can wrap this up by next weekend.
17 - v2 / TAC / Glass Mind* / Haunting Regrets… no, you haven’t been fired – just relegated to the top 20. I could’ve put all 3 tracks you gave me from these guys in to a single entry, but figured I’d call out this one specifically. I’m really not sure why people have routinely slagged the singer – I totally dig his voice, how unpolished it is at times, and he does a pretty good job with his high-end screams… not pushing himself out of what he’s capable of. I wish they hadn’t reverted back to being an instrumental band only. Production is a little thin, but that’s to be expected by a nothing band with very little budget. It’s very reminiscent of early DT. Lots of skill in the musicianship on display here. Nothing else they’ve written has come close to the quality of this album.
16 - v1 / Zydar / Bloodbound / Nosferatu… if you weren’t so hit-and-miss in v1, you could’ve made it to the finals. This was a BIG hit. I’ll say it again (pretty sure this was part of my original writeup), if imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, then Iron Maiden is flattered as shit over this one. Everything about this song and structure just oozes Maiden influence… the slow/moody intro, the galloping beat, the repetitive chorus, Urban’s vocal range, the lyrical theme. Put it all together, and it’s a home run.
15 - v1 / Obscure / Mind's Eye* / Feed My Revolver… from a prog-metal concept album about an assassin. Nothing overtly original, but the song is 10lbs of prog-metal in a 5lb bucket. Flawless, and it fits perfectly in with the album. I keep meaning to check out the rest of the catalogue, but routinely get side-tracked. I think I’ve sampled a few things, but (as usual), it pales in comparison with the stuff the DTF community lays on me.
-
15 - v1 / Obscure / Mind's Eye* / Feed My Revolver… from a prog-metal concept album about an assassin.
I am not awake yet this morning and I read this as "a prog-metal concept album about an asshole." :lol

That Mind’s Eye album is a belter 🤘

That's probably what the prog-world needs, Geoff Tate could write the lyrics to that. ;)
-
14 - v1 / Zydar / Hellfueled / Let Me Out…. If Maiden was flattered over Nosferatu, there Ozzy is infinitely more flattered over this one. I mean, the similarities vocally, as well as the guitar tone/style to Zack is out-of-this world. Seriously, just listen to this track and you’d be hard pressed to convince not instantly think it's really a b-side unreleased Zack-era Ozzy single. 3:40 of pure bliss, and takes me back to my memories and feelings of hearing solo Ozzy for the very first time. Makes me all giddy inside.
13 - v3 / Zook / Black Fate** / Weight of the World…. Second song of the exact same round that had Roy Khan … I mean, Vasilis Georgio on vocals. Upon first hearing it, I thought for sure this was some side project from the 00s that Khan was part of that I’d never heard. This made me an instant fan of Vasilis. Great album, and I’m pretty sure that a few other songs from this disc have been regularly used in roulettes.
12 - v3 / bl5150 / Rox Diamond* / Familiar Stranger…. Taking it back down a notch on this countdown and heading down a very simple rock path. Smooth, simple, straight-forward… but with some high octane vocals powered by killer melodies. Straight out of everything I loved about the late 70s and 80s AOR style of rock music. Rhythms are simple, hooks are catchy, guitar solo is scrappy, and the vocals just carry this wholesome vibe about them – very Steve Perry-like in some regards.
-
...
-
That Hellfueled song is so good.
-
17 - v2 / TAC / Glass Mind* / Haunting Regrets… no, you haven’t been fired – just relegated to the top 20. :metal
That album is so incredible. And the singer sings with so much passion.
-
11 - v3 / Big Hath / Arion* / Shadows …. This one now ranks ahead of the 3 songs that it scored below from the Roulette qualifying round from which you gave it to me. I’m starting to be at a loss for new words and ways to describe how good these songs are, and how much they resonated with me – so I’m gonna steal from my original writeup. nice lyrics, fantastic vocals with some wicked screams blended in with some beautiful harmonies, and a wonderful guitar/keyboard duel. Got me some investigating to do with these guys. And investigating I did. This isn’t even my favourite tune on the album – Top 3 maybe – it’s a cracker of an album. Their follow up release was a little disappointing though.
10 - v1 / Lonestar / Beautiful Sin* / Take Me Home… Well, you called it – top 10, and Maggy starts it off. Up until this point, most of the ‘metal’ female voices I knew were either symphonic/operatic, or very distinctly *female*. Magali changed all that. With a rasp and aggression that is unique and undeniable (perhaps it’s the French accent coming through?), she commands instant attention. This was probably the first 'cheat' in my roulettes (since a song with Matty on it kicked your ass earlier in the roulette), and may have been the source of my Roulette motto. This album is 5* top to bottom, even the French version of one of the tracks. If Maggy is on the mic, jingle.boy’s wallet is gettin lighter - pretty sure I've purchased everything (metal) that she's performed on.
-
That whole Arion album is amazing!
-
Beautiful Sin is one time I actually don't mind female vocals.
Confident I have 2 songs in the top 10.
-
Well I'm done here....and nailed my prediction of 6 :metal
Now to see if I guessed the right no.1 with Epysode.
-

Oh yeah, I remember when Nem sent it, Chad had a woody for a week.

You need more Maggy in your life.
Well I'm done here....and nailed my prediction of 6 :metal
Indeed you are. So, since pretty much everyone else underestimated themselves and know they've missed their prediction, it's no surprise that you and Stads were the only ones to accurately predict their number of entries.
9 more to go, then let me know which album piques your interest.
-
I guessed 7 and am up to 9 so far. I think I'm done, because I don't remember you liking anything more that Glass Mind.
-
I guessed 6 and am on 7 now, also reasonably certain I have one more to come.
-
I lost count again.
-
Ok, let's keep this going.
9 - v2 / Bolsters / Stratovarious* / Unbreakable… Stratovarius was mostly a ‘miss’ for me when I was first exposed to them – Episode and Fright Night. It in the early ‘00s, right around the time I was exploring a shit ton of new PROG metal, so it didn’t really click. However, with this tune, and my greater appreciation and love for POWER metal, everything fell in to place. Great tone in every instrument and vocally, straight-forward power metal structure, with that nice key change / step up coming out of the guitar solo. Timo is at the top of his game here. I definitely prefer later Strat over earlier Strat. I bought Nemesis and Elysium, and explored everything post Infinite – all excellent… but it’s just a lot to digest, and I don’t find myself going back to them very often – come at me Katt.
8 - v1 / wolfking / Axel Rudi Pell** / Fly to the Moon… actually, THIS tune was the first ‘cheat’. Knowing my love for Johnny Gioelli was a good call to drop this one on me. ARP is a guitar virtuoso, but if you’ve heard one ARP album, you’ve heard them all. Still, this was my first experience, and it gave me reason to dig deep into ARP, especially with the variety of vocalists he's had sing for his albums. On this tune, not only did that opening riff grab me by the balls, but when Gioelli comes in, I was all :omg:. Frantic drum fills add a nice feeling of what I would describe as controlled panic. Naturally, a killer solo, which ended up as the cherry on the top of this sonic sundae.
-
At least you have some sense to like Unbreakable that much, because it's a fucking fantastic song.
Also, you misspelled their name :censored
-
Okay, maybe I have 3 songs in the top 10.
-
7 - v3 / senecadawg2 / The Chronicles Project* / Forever… the second song with Vasilis Georgio in the very same round, but this was a far better tune. With the intro track that has the same narrator as we hear on the Vanden Plas / Netherworld albums, it set the tone wonderfully. The concept of the album is really cool. This song is (as Kade put it when I gave it to him – “I thought Kamelot was banned”) so reminiscent of Khan-era Kamelot, it’s uncanny. But, it’s as good if not better than the best that Kamelot put out with Khan.
6 - v2 / TAC / Glass Mind* / Crepusculum Vehementus… ok, take everything I said about the Haunting Regrets above, and it’s like this tune says “hold my beer” – but not in the redneck, ‘ima ‘bout to fuck everything up’ way… more like ‘anything you can do, I can do better’ kinda way. This is the song of the album for sure, and I did have to call out each tune separately.
-
I am very surprised to see Crepusculum Vehementis rank this high.
-
Fingers crossed I get the number one spot!
-

Yep, you had to look closely. :lol
-
5 - v1 / Ytse / Blessed by a Broken Heart* / Shut up and Rock …. I’m not certain, but I suspect that Round 1 of my first roulette has the most entries on this list – 6. You guys killed me right out of the gate. Ytse played the ‘glam’ card, with a modern sound and boy-oh-boy did it land. It’s a very aptly named tune, as it just grabs your attention in the first 10 seconds and does not let go at all – one of the best overall riffs (lead and rhythm) of any song on this list – with some tasty background guitar “screams” and random licks – and the duel-solo is shockingly fantastic. The lyrics are SOOOOO 80s glam metal, I fucking love it “Turn it up louder; drink that drink ‘til you Feel The Power; You know we ain’t gonna stop, so bang your head and Shut Up and Rock – YEAH!!!”. I mean, come on – it doesn’t get any better than that! And the whole album cranks that fucking theme and vibe to 11! :2metal: :lol
-
That song ROCKS. One of my favorites out of the 300+ in my adventure roulette. Peak headbanging music. I love that same part you quoted.
-
One of my fav albums of the last 10 years. Brilliant band. Shame they broke up after this album.
-
The best song I've ever been sent in a roulette was in round 1 of my first roulette as well so I can relate

The Tallest Man on Earth? :neverusethis:

nah Slint :metardica:
-
Cool album. Not played it in a while.
-
4 - v3 / wolfking / W.A.S.P.* / Arena of Pleasure… you wanna talk about grabbing your attention in the first few seconds, none do it better than this. It wastes ZERO time in bringing the metal. Like many other metal bands, W.A.S.P. was off my radar back in the 80s and 90s. Missing out on decades of listening to them pisses me off to no end. Like a handful of other acts mentioned already, my circle of friends didn’t talk about them much, and there wasn’t a lot of radio airplay either. I had mistakenly lumped my perception of them into the ‘thrash’ group of metal bands. :zeltar:. Everything about this was a home-run, and set you on the path to victory – and was far and away the best song of the opening round of this roulette – like, not even close... Galahad was the only other song that made this list from that round, and that was a ways down the list.
-
The whole album is brilliant. Kade also made me a fan, I think this was the first album I bought after the roulette. Or I might've bought it during the roulette. The Idol was so good, still a 10/10 song in my book.
-
:metal
I knew that song was coming. Perfect album and easily one of the greatest concept albums ever. The band has a ton of great music but this is their magnum opus.
-
I loved WASP.
I bought the Animal single on picture disc when it came out. I lost touch with them after the first Neon God album but have delved back in to what I missed since.
Crimson Idol is the best thing they did.

I very much loved Golgotha and Babylon. :metal
-
Golgotha was pretty good and a few of the other post Crimson albums are good but it's very up and down and often a bit "sameish" across the good albums.
For me (in terms of albums) it's the debut , Crimson Idol and Headless Children well above the rest. The lack of talk about Headless Children always surprises me - it was sort of a halfway point between their cartoonish era and more serious songwriting topics and has a bit more of their early heaviness than Crimson Idol.
Arena of Pleasure though is one of my all time faves of theirs and Doug Aldrich's shredtastic style is perfect for the song.
-
Since when is Doug Aldrich shredtastic?
I was done with WASP after Electric Circus. The Crimson Idol has failed to grab me. I even bought the tape when it came out. I'll make a point of hitting it after my roulette.

Crimson Idol and Headless Children are their best albums by a fairly wide margin. Their self titled and Golgotha are both really good though. Didn't care too much for Babylon.

The last couple are very good.
I’m concerned that Blackie mimes these days - put me right off getting a ticket for the tour next year

Yeah, that was the album right before Crimson Idol.
-
Yeah, I bought it when it came out, but it didn't have any staying power.
It seemed a bit more serious, like they were trying to be an actual band, and well, that wasn't what I listened to WASP for.
-
I agree with Brent re Headless and the debut. Top 3 albums. I do like me a bit of KFD though. Something different that I thought worked really quite well. Neon God's were pretty shit but the production is what really didn't do it any favours. Dying for the World is another underrated one.
-
Since when is Doug Aldrich shredtastic?
You're either joking or you're a damn good guitarist :lol
He may not be known as a shredder these days but back in the day (prior to his blues rock focus) he was right up there. From a legato standpoint I can't think of too many who could match him outside of Vinnie Moore and from an "attack on the strings" standpoint he was up there with - and before - Zakk Wylde.
Check these solos out and tell me again he's not a shredder!

Brent blew my mind with that Aldrich revlelation on TCI. Never knew that.
-
My experience of him is with Dio, and if I try really hard, I like Killing The Dragon, but his time with Dio is generally pretty useless if you ask me.

Killing The Dragon = solid :)
By the time he was in Dio I was beginning to tire of him a bit - technically he can be a bit of a one trick pony - but in the late 80s /early 90s I was a big fan of his early work with Lion, BMR , Hurricane and W.A.S.P. Oh............and House of Lords (Sahara) - another one where he was an uncredited gun for hire.
-
When was he in Hurricane? I saw them in 1987.
As far as KTD, I feel like I had to drop my Dio standards to accept that.
-
He recorded one album with Hurricane - Slave To The Thrill. Still have an original album on vinyl (cover was later banned/changed) - was a bit of a collectors item back in the day :lol
That might be enough to get Tim Googling again :)
-
Then again, it may not. :lol

I should've known better...........here you go

Haken gets not even a whiff of the top 150 songs submitted. In fact, I don't think anyone was daring enough to even submit them ever.
-
This got a chuckle out of me the other day............
it's perhaps the only time the guys from Haken every got together to play music that wasn't vomit inducing.
-
All aboard the Haken hate train! Toot toot!
-
I didn't realize there are so many Haken haters around here :loser:
-
I’ve don’t remember ever hearing a Haken song.

It's rather popular to shit on Haken, especially on DT side of the forum. Some of the things I saw would've probably got people banned if said about DT (which kinda makes sense since we're on DT forum after all).
To keep with the spirit of this thread, Haken suck because they don't tour Russia

:lol pretty safe bet I won’t

Haken is SFAM: The Band

Haken is SFAM: The Band
Except SFAM is great.
I'm not hating on Haken, I got no beef with them - they're talented, and I can see/hear how people would love their music. I just ain't one of them. I've tried, and failed.... and moved on. We all have dozens of bands that fall into this realm.
TASTESTM!

More like You Not Me: The Band

Haken sounds like machines playing what machines think progressive metal should be
Atlas Stone is a cool song though

Stratovarius sounds like machines playing what machines think Power Metal should be.

Hey. Shut up and post another update. :lol
-
Ok.... Kade is on a tear here.
3 - v1 / wolfking / Starbreaker** / Lies… I mean, it’s Magnus-fucking-Karlsson + Tony Harnell. Serious drool-worthy stuff. Heavy opening riff, slow and emotive story telling at times, fast-paced chorus, smart lyrics, fantastic mood-setting keyboards… all topped off with the signature master-class quality riffs, runs, and solo that is to be expected with any and everything coming from Magnus. I have no idea why I wrote this song up as only a ‘slim’ victory in the one-on-one matchup you had against Obscure in the finals. The production is a little thin, but I think that adds a certain charm and appeal. I need a cigarette.
That one you didn't expect; this one you did.
2 - v1 / wolfking / Lord** / New Horizons… in the Power Ballad round, again you gave a song that was far and away the best of the round – in fact, no other submission that round made this list – little did I know that Pete from Harem Scarem provides the guitar solo(s) – not sure if he did both of them. Honestly, this is one of the best Power Ballads I’ve ever heard – better than everything except the very best from the 80s golden era of power ballads. The mid-song solo is filled with emotion, and then the outro caps it off. The obvious lyrical theme of touring bands can easily be extended to life in general, as we’re often finding (or searching for) New Horizons.
#1 will be anti-climactic for some.

-
Oh yeah....called no.1!!!
-
#1 is something off last.fm right
-
Yep, didn't expect Lies at all. Fucking great update I must say haha. That Starbreaker album is classic.
New Horizons is one of the greatest power ballads I've come across. Just a brilliant song. Chad, the first solo is Lord Tim and the second one is Pete. The outro solo again is Tim.

We know what number 1 is.
-
Oh yeah... meant to post it this morning.
1 - v1 / Obscure / Epysode* / Obsessions … as predicted – and it should come as no surprise to those who were around in 2011, this tops the list. Where to start? As great as every one of the 149 songs I’ve rhymed off, there is just no comparison. For me, this tune is in a league of it’s own – I can’t even call it God-tier, because it’s more than that to me. This is one of those Top 5 all-time impactful songs that each and every one of us can rhyme off. I said in my writeup that this song “moved” me… as in the George Costanza “I think it moved” kinda way. And that’s not hyperbole – there was a little something simmering down there as I listened to – and watched…. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched the video (I had to go and watch it while doing this writeup) – this song in the opening round of the roulette. It was the 2nd ever Roulette song I listened to, and (according to last.fm) the most listened to Roulette song – and if last.fm could include the number of times I’ve watched it on YT, it’d surely be a Top 5 all-time listened to song. Why is it so good – metal-af riff right off the top, Maggy + Kelly Carpenter, high-paced, intriguing lyrics (that form the basis for an awesome concept trilogy- though, we’re still waiting for album #3), amazing guest solo, accompanying keyboards add to the metal-ness of this the song, drumming that is all over the map yet fits perfecting in place. For me it’s one of those tunes that I simply love so much it’s not uncommon for it to bring a little tear to my eye.

Thought so. That'll do! ;D

Got intro'ed to Epysode via a roulette or post-routette submission from you. Liked it enough to check out more of their stuff. It's good, it doesn't hit me in any significant way, but still enjoyable.
-
would you say you are obsessed with the song
-
I'm sure its just an episode.

Some final stats and thoughts later tonight.

Same. Interesting #1 pick!

Yo... lonestar and Stadler! Let me know which albums you're interested in me gifting to ya.
Also, been meaning to fire up some stats on this, but the formatting ends up looking like ass, so here's the best I can do

Kade gets the nod as being most prolific (since he made it to all three of the 'finals' that required multiple submissions); Brent is the most efficient.
Also, the average song ranking on the Top 150 for everyone. Elite tops the list with only 1 (incredible) song; Stads at the bottom with only 1 (excellent) song. Seneca is aided by having a low sample size (3); Zydar is aided by in that his best submissions came in my 1st roulette - longevity skews ratings naturally. Overall, the stats say the songs from Lonestar, Brent, Bolsters and King were the most consistently great.

You need to use a monospaced font, such as Courier.

That's still a bitch, because the actual window where we type posts is NOT courier.

Type it up in Notepad (or anything that allows you to use a monospaced font) then paste it in. :P
Anyway, back to the actual statistics...my percentage would be nowhere near that high if you counted all my submissions instead of just the best ones. :lol
