I was browsing the Reddit’s Prog-Metal group yesterday and I saw that there was a lot of persons talking about the new and debut album from Ihlo so I decided to give them a chance. Wow!! If you like bands like Haken, Leprous, TesseracT and Caligula's Horse you will be floored by the quality of this album. I already think that this album will be in my 2019 top 10 list.

:tup Gonna check this out, those are three of my favourite bands at the moment.
-
What if I'm a fan of Haken and Leprous, don't like TesseracT and ambivalent towards Caligula's Horse (I have Bloom and it's kinda meh)? :P
I guess I'll spin this when I have time.
-
spun this one yesterday but only made it about halfway through. i really don't understand the appeal of these riffless, emotionally dry "djent-prog" bands that all sound the same and completely lack any kind of hooks but i guess it has to appeal to someone, shrug
-
Shockingly, I agree with Parama. I do love the artwork, though.
-
oh yeah most of these kinds of bands do get some pretty great album covers i just wish the music was as vibrant and colorful to match
-
There's nothing worse than clicking on some amazing artwork only to realize....oh, this is another instrumental djent band. Yay.
I find there's a lot more interesting music in metalcore circles than djent ones, these days.
-
Er, they're not instrumental (they literally don't even have one instrumental track) and while there's a strong djent style in the riffing, they're definitely not a djent band.
And yeah, amazing debut. I was lucky enough to get a promo a few days ago and I love it. Prompted me to write a review for the first time in over a year: http://ladyobscure.com/albums/ihlo-union/
-
I wasn't saying they were instrumental, I was taking the great artwork - uninteresting music theme to another problem I have, that being clicking on videos whose artwork promises great music which turns out to be instrumental djent. Sorry if the link wasn't clear.
-
Mad props to Rich for telling me about these guys, they've been getting some pretty serious spins. Great stuff.

I’m gone for a while and your name has changed. What is this?
Haven’t listened to this album yet, by the way (to stay on topic).

Lmao I'm friends with one of the band members and he's having good laugh at this :lol
-
they're definitely not a djent band.
How though? They hit practically all the elements I'd associate with a djent band, from the guitars to the clean vocals to the background synths / electronics, the overall production style and the futuristic / spacey atmosphere. And they sound very much like TesseracT, which is most definitely a djent band.
-
I only listened to 2 songs, but those 2 were definitely djent. Not good djent though... in my opinion ::)
Maybe I’ll check out the album at some point but there’s too much music I’m loving that I have to dig into first!
-
I mean they're not literally meshuggah-esque chugcore but unless you're that strict with definitions then yeah saying they aren't djent is dishonest, the riffing style was djent as hell even if the tones don't exactly match
-
The only resemblance I find right now is from the 1st Tesseract album. So far I'm liking what I'm hearing (only got through the first two songs).

I didn't say they aren't djent, I said they aren't "a djent band". We've had the discussion here before but djent isn't really a genre because it's only defined by the riffing style, so generally for "djent bands" that's basically all they do. Which is not the case for Ihlo.
I mean, if someone has something against the djent style then that's fine but that's no issue with the band.
-
So the 'for fans of Haken, Leprous and Tesseract' is a classic case of name-dropping. I can hear Haken, occasionally (but also not really apart from the affinity.exe intro and Puzzle Box riff), and Tesseract clearly, but nothing on this album explicitly reminds me of Leprous in any way. Leprous are far more original than anything on this disc. Can't really see myself spinning this again.

I generally find myself enjoying essentially anything Rich enjoys, so I'll try and give this a full spin sometime soon! First song I listened to sounded quite good, though.
-
The first few songs are solid enough but the best stuff comes from mid-way through to the end. Still loving it and looking forward to seeing them live on Thursday.

That was thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks for turning me onto these guys!
**Fun Fact - I had no clue what Djent meant till reading this thread, and of course google. :lol OK... back to the Old Fogeys thread with me.....
-
Thanks for the heads up, I just listened to the album and I enjoyed it, this will be in my rotation, good album!

What's with all the negativity in this thread, sometimes DT fans confuse me :lol
This is a really good album! I am stunned by the melodies, the rhythmic variety, the ability of the musicians. The singer is fantastic and does a great job on the keys too. I fell in love with this djenty progmetal style when I got into TesseracT's One and am looking for music of this style ever since. But I can't find too many stuff that hits the spot. This is one of those albums I've been looking for. Thank you guys!

Same sentiments on Ihlo. Great album. I hope they can release their new album sooner than later. Going to be hard to top Union.
