Title: How many times have you seen DT and how many more times do you plan to?
Post by: Phoenix87x on April 17, 2019, 06:57:14 AM
There's probably a thread like this already, but I was having trouble finding it.

How many times have you seen DT live and how many more times do you think you will see them?

I've seen them 3 times:

1. 2009 - Black clouds tour
2. 2011 - A dramatic turn of events tour
3. 2019 - Scenes/DoT tour

I feel pretty satisfied with how many times I've seen them. I would probably go again if the played ToT live though.

How about you guys?

The first time I saw them was opening for Iron Maiden, which was the last tour they did with Portnoy. And I've seen them every time they toured in my city since, which makes it 6 times total, and every time they come play my city (which, thankfully, seems to be every time they tour), it's pretty much implied that I'll be going to see them. So as long as they're touring and playing my city, I'll go see them. It's always the highlight of my concert going experience.

I've seen DT three times just performing The Astonishing. I think I've seen them a total of 12 times now, maybe 13.

I'll see them as many more times as they allow me to.

Twice, oddly only just recently. Once for The Astonishing, once for IW&B.

Once, in 2000.  I've wanted to see the last two tours (I&W, D/T), but just haven't been able to make it work out.  I'm sure I'll see them again sometime.

I've seen them 14 times, first time back in 1993 on the I&W tour, last time 2017 on the I&W&Beyond tour. Best gig was probably Leeds on the BC&SL tour, worst was Wembley on the BC&SL tour. If they toured the UK more, I'd have probably seen them more. As to how often I'll continue to see them - well, that's a good question. They're certainly not as essential as they once were (the move to all-seated venues has sucked a lot of the atmosphere out of the experience IMO), and it wouldn't be the end of the world if I missed a tour, but I imagine I'll still try to see them at least once per tour from here on in, but I am painfully aware that I am towards the end of my nearly 30 year love affair with DT...

Six times. 2009, 2011, 2012, twice in 2014 and one more in 2015. Hopefully I'll make a comeback this year after having to pass on the last two tours.

1 during Octavarium tour
2 during SC tour
2 during BC&SL tour
2 during ADTOE tour (Live at Luna Park)
1 during DT12 tour

I might attend a show if they come here during this tour, but I'm not a fan of MMs drumming and I'm afraid he might ruin my experience of listening to SFAM live. Yes, controversial opinion, I know, but it is what it is.
Title: Re: How many times have you seen DT and how many more times do you plan to?
Post by: OpenYourEyes311 on April 17, 2019, 07:40:33 AM
1 in 1998
2 in 2004
1 in 2005
3 in 2006
5 in 2007
1 in 2008-2012 (5 total)
1 in 2014
2 in 2016
1 in 2017
1 in 2019

So... 22 times so far. I will continue to see them when they come to my city/state/area, which they do at least once a tour cycle.

I've seen them twice (Progressive Nation 2009 and on the DT12 tour). That's enough for me though, I'm not really a concert goer anyway.

Three times:

1) SCORE show, Radio City Music Hall, 2006
2) Last show of The Astonishing tour, Durham, 2016
3) Images, Words, & Beyond tour, Raleigh, 2017

I have the Distance Over Time/SFAM show coming up next Monday in Charlotte.  I will see them as often as I can.

4 times. And I'd love to keep seeing them, but I wish they'd come to Richmond again. I'm tired of having to drive to D.C. or Maryland to see them.

1. 8/1/09 Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD
2. 7/12/12 The National, Richmond, VA
3. 11/27/17 The Lyric, Baltimore, MD
4. 4/15/19 Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C.

Since my discovering of DT 3 years ago I have seen them 5x.
Three were The Astonishing and two on the current tour.

I first saw the Astonishing while I was just exploring their music. I wasn’t sure about the TA record.. Because I knew nothing about DT, I was surprised that the “Pull Me Under” band had an enormous discography and was playing this rock opera in it’s entirety. I hadn’t been to a concert in 16 years - Metallica when I was pregnant with my 1st son - my kids were older and I could drive 4 hours to see them in Oakland.  I took my sister-in-law.  I was so blown away that I could not stop talking about them when I got back and vowed to take my son and hubby if they came back around... :metal

They did later in the year, and at this point, I was fully engaged. I didn’t want to miss them, so I planned a mini weekend to LA with my son, we did the VIP. And were about 5 feet from the stage (GA) center.  About 5 days after I got the tickets to LA, they announced they were coming to my little city of Reno! I felt bad that I had just spent So Much Money to go to LA, and told my hubby. His response “Go again!”. I took him to that one.

Those two were my favorite so far. Meeting the band was awesome, got a fist bump from JLB when I told him I turned my son onto DT and JP told my son that he had a cool mom :o

In Reno we were at the stage JP side - (GA again) and there was no fence. JLB was actually over top of us when he would sing on that side.  :yarr There was a mosh pit during PMU.  JP gave me a nod (confirmed when my hubby looked at me and said “JP just winked at you!”.)   :rollin

This tour, I went to LA again with my son and did another VIP. It really ranks up there with the last one. The only down I guess is that the sound was kinda too loud and it seemed a bit distorted. Then Milwaukee with another sister-in-law - the volume was lower, so it was great! (Ok, I wanted to turn it up on Home).

I will see them as many times as I can, since I am late on the ship.

After last week... 18 times all since 2007 Chaos in Motion tour.  Living in NJ, there's usually at least two shows in close distance to me per tour, sometimes three so I have that as an advantage.

I've seen them 7 times since 2009 and I will continue to spend my money on their concerts as long as 1. I have some 2. they play some.

I think I've seen them 11 times, if I'm not miscounting.  I started relatively late.  I'm not even sure I was aware of them touring for I&W, Awake, or FII.  Even though I was a casual fan from I&W, I didn't really jump fully onto the fan bandwagon until SFAM.  I was busy with my final year of law school and the bar exam during that tour, so a show wasn't really even on my radar.  First time seeing them was, I believe, the summer tour with Satch and King's X after SDOIT was out.  Then I just went from there.  So my shows are, I believe:

-Summer Satch/King's X tour (Concord Pavillion)
-Escape from the studio tour with Queensryche and Fates Warning - x2 (Concord Pavillion and Cal Expo)
-TOT tour (Warfield)
-SC tour (Berkeley Theater)
-ADTOE tour - x2 (both at the Warfield)
-DT12 tour (Warfield)
-TA tour - x2 (Fox Theater and Grand Sierra Resort theater)
-d/t tour - Masonic Theater

1 time on Gigantour 2005. In Grand Prairie (outside of Dallas). It was the show where they encored with Pantera’s Cemetery Gates and had Dave Mustaine and Russell Allen come up.

And I’ll be seeing them in a week and a half in Dallas.

9 times as of now: once on the Met2 tour, 4 times on the 6D tour, once on the TOT tour, once on the DT12 tour, once on the TA tour and once on the I/W 2.0 tour. I don't know if I will attend the D/T tour. (I don't really like the album and I'm not too fond of Met2 either, especially the way they chose to play it now, although it was a lot worse in 2000, but at the same time, I liked the 2014 tour versions a lot more) It will depend on how good DT15 will be if I'll go see them again.
Title: Re: How many times have you seen DT and how many more times do you plan to?

5 times:

1. Prog Nation in Glasgow 2009
2. ADTOE tour in Glasgow 2012
3. DT12 tour in Manchester 2014
4. Second Astonishing show in London 2016
5. I&W and Beyond tour in Glasgow 2017 (can't believe that one was 2 years ago already)

They're still by far and away my favourite band, but I don't go to gigs that much these days and the I&W and beyond tour ticked a few of the boxes of what I wanted to see live (my favourite album ever and my 2 favourite songs ever). So future UK tours aren't an automatic buy for me anymore. It very much depends on the setlist now, or at least whether or not I can get a friend to come - I've grown weary of going to gigs on my own. I probably won't travel outside Scotland to see them again either like I did with Manchester/London, unless it was some very special occasion - like filming a show or a farewell tour.

Once during Self Titled Tour

And I plan on seeing them every tour possible until they are no longer touring.

you should IMHO, especially if you never have before and you're easily impressionable (like I was as a child and saw them for the first time)

I missed them on the ADTOE tour (unintentionally mind you) and I was furious about it (because I love the album, one of my two absolute favourites, DT12 is the other one. We got Luna Park afterwards, but still. That must have been a great tour.) The other tours I intentionally didn't attend happened from 2005 to 2009. This one may be one I'll intentionally miss as well as I said above.

16 times, and I'll see them at least once on every tour until the band no longer exists.

(all of these are in California, USA)
Nov. 12, 1992 - The Marquee - Westminster
Nov. 23, 1992 - Rhythm Cafe - San Diego
Feb. 12, 1993 - The Palace - Los Angeles
June 3, 1993 - Celebrity Theater - Anaheim
Dec. 8, 1994 - Galaxy Theater - Santa Ana
Sep. 19, 2004 - Universal Amphitheatre - Universal City
March 9, 2006 - The Grove - Anaheim
July 27, 2007 - Gibson Amphitheatre - Universal City
May 2, 2008 - Gibson Amphitheatre
Aug. 29, 2009 - Greek Theatre - Los Angeles
June 19, 2010 - San Manuel Amphitheater - San Bernardino
Sep. 25, 2011 - Nokia Theatre - Los Angeles
Dec. 2, 2011 - The Grove - Anaheim
Apr. 19, 2014 - Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles
Oct. 26, 2017 - Wiltern Theatre - Los Angeles
March 22, 2019 - Wiltern Theatre

I missed the SDOIT tour because my kids were babies, but I have no good reason (that I can remember) for missing FII and SFAM.

First time I saw them was August 9th, 2009 for the Progressive Nation tour.

Had tickets for the 2010 tour with Maiden but could not make it. Did not go for the A Dramatic Tour of Events.

Saw them in 2014, 2016,2017 and this tour.

1999 European tour in Milan, pre-full SFAM show
2000 European tour in Milan, best of setlist, A Change of Seasons as encore
2002 European tour in Milan, Six Degrees show
2004 European tour in Milan, Train of Thought show
2005 European tour in Milan, Octavarium show
2007 Gods of Metal festival in Milan, entire Images and Words album played, first date of the whole tour
2007 European tour in Milan, Systematic Chaos show
2009 Gods of Metal festival in Milan (actually it was a nearby city, Monza), pre-Black Clouds summer shows
2012 European tour in Milan, A Dramatic Turn of Events show
2014 European tour in Milan, self titled show
2016, European tour in Milan, The Astonishing live
2017, European tour in Milan, Images and Words and Beyond

So I've seen them 12 times. I plan to see the summer gig and then the mandatory autumn gig with SFAM played in full this year, which will make 14. And then once a tour for all foreseeable tours to come.

14. First was Jones Beach (Long Island) in 1998 opening for ELP and Deep Purple. The most current was last month in San Francisco.

I'm not sure about seeing them again. Before this gig, the answer was no. After seeing them on the I&W&B tour in 2017, I said that was it -- I wasn't a fan of their recent music, and I figured seeing I&W and ACOS in full was a great cap to my years as a fan. But then Distance Over Time was incredible, and they sounded amazing at the show. So, in short, I'm not sure.

I will say, as much as I had a blast, it was rough the next morning. So, unless it is a Friday or Saturday night, I may pass going forward. But again, that all depends on how I feel at the time.

Unless there is a flat-out scheduling conflict, I definitely want to see them again this tour cycle.  Not only was the performance amazing, but I really want to see some of the other songs (S2N and At Wit's End in particular).

21 times for me since 2004 although that rapidly slowed down following the switch to (virtually) static setlists.

Highlights: the Score show, Hammersmith 2005 (second night, Dark Side of the Moon), Wolverhampton 2005, Blackburn 2007 and Rome 2011.

I imagine I'll check out one show per tour (maybe per album?) from this point. I simply don't see the point of seeing the exactly same show several times.

I think I've seen the 12 times (may be 11) and I plan on seeing every album tour.   I usually don't go to the second leg but I plan to this time because I must see AWE live and I also the last 3 shows I have seen they played TA, I&W, and SFAM in their entirety which I loved but I would enjoy a totally eclectic setlist by them with 3 hours of varying material.

There is under the "Concerts and Setlists" subforum tho it doesn't have a poll:
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=28476.0

That said, to answer your question, I'm up to 55 shows now. However, with the setlists be static (the current tour basically is), I'm just going to see them once per tour unlike the past where I've see them up to 8 times on one tour leg. If they change the setlist up later on in this tour, I'll try to catch another show.

I don't see why not, they pretty much always do two legs for an album release tour.  Maybe bosk knows more, but I'd guess they will be back next winter.  These shows sold better than I can ever remember for them.

and I don't think I answered the second question, but unless things change, I'd expect to see them at least once every tour until they retire and likely more than once per tour too if possible.

4 times in total (one for each tour cycle since SC, when I became a fan, I just missed the BC&SL show):

SC - Toronto
ADTOE - Mexico
DT12 - Mexico
TA - Mexico

I hope they come to Mexico with this tour cycle (they didn't come here with the I&W anniversary), they will be playing here in a festival in May, but I want to see the full show (and it's quite expensive to see them in a festival).

Probably 30 to 40 times, all over the UK and in continental Europe, Asia and the USA. I've lost count.

I may see them again if they do any more huge special events (like Score) but I'm not going to travel any great distance for a standard DT gig.

I plan to see them whenever they come locally if the setlist contains songs I have not yet heard live.

Looking at the poll results, the options probably should have been different -- e.g., never; 1-5 times; 6-10 times; . . . more than 25 times.

8 times, 4 times here in St Louis (1994, 2000, 2004 and 2016), 2 times in Chicago (2002 and 2014), 1 time in Orlando (2000) and 1 time in Kansas City (2014).

I doubt I will ever travel to another city to see them again, but I will definitely go see them every time they come back to STL.

I've seen them 4 times...

Paris, FR 2012
Red Bank, NJ 2014
New York, NY 2016
Red Bank, NJ 2019

They're on a short list of bands that I try to see whenever they are local, so I'm sure I'll see them many more times. Unfortunately, I started listening to them in 2010, so I missed out on a lot of great shows  :sadpanda:

Never seen them live. The only time they came to my country (March 2010 - BC&SL tour with Bigelf opening) I was a teenager still in school and had to miss it for many reasons. I kept hoping they'd come back for future tours, but they just never did :'(

11 times, basically every album tour except for Images and Words (peritonitis) and Falling into Infinity (my car broke on the road to the venue)

First one was surreal: Awake tour, no more than 150 people (bona fide monsoon during the afternoon and really small club) and I didn't know Kevin was gone and Derek was on board.

Last one was even more surreal: IAW&B in Florence, same theatre I performed in a couple of months before. Felt very proud but very sorry for them.

I had NO idea you were Italian (unless you really like to travel all the way to Milan from wherever you are from!)

As for myself, 6 times soon to be 7:

2012.02.21 - Milano (ADTOE)
2014.01.24 - Firenze (DT12 Leg 1)
2014.07.23 - Brescia (DT12 Leg 2, best DT show I've been to)
2015.07.2x - Pistoia (30th anniversary mini-tour)
2016.03.18 - Milano (TA tour)
2017.04.23 - London (IAW shows)
--
2019.07.12 - Saint-Julien en Genevois (Summer DoT tour)

I've been trying to determine how many times I've seen them on the ADTOE tour, I went to shows on both the first and second U.S. legs. I'm trying to think of the best way to track that down, looking over old credit card statements would be a pain in the ass :lol

I´ve seen the tours for:

Awake
FII
Scenes
Six Degrees
Octavarium
Systematic Chaos
The Astonishing

Think I enjoyed Awake and TA the most. I usually don´t like the concept of bands playing a whole album but since I absolutely adore The Astonishing it was wonderful. I really hope that album gets the recognition it deserves sooner or later. Don´t understand the people that call it a departure from the core sound, I think it was exactly in line with their core sound and what they do best!

If you still have credit card statements from 2011, you need to consider buying a shredder.   ;D

You don't print/keep ticket stubs?

You can check setlist.fm to find the dates for pretty much any tour.  Pre-ADTOE stuff is also up on MP's site, although that particular section has been down for the last week or so.

short answer, A: 6 and B: many North American tours as they have left in them

I'm an oddball here. My first two shows were in the 90s, then a long drought. First show was opening for ELP and Moody Blues IIRC. (Harveys Lake PA) - this was after years of being a fan from the day I discovered I&W at my local record shop. 2nd show was in Boston, maybe early 2000s, with Fates Warning and Queensryche.

Lost touch with the scene, had kids, focused live music more in the jam band world. I tended to prefer live shows of bands that did different sets every night, improvised on stage. Think Phish.

Rediscovered DT after the whole Portnoy departure, didn't even know about ADTOE until Self-titled popped into my universe by chance. Got back on board whole heartedly like I discovered my long lost love. This may be why I like the self-titled album a lot more than most posters here. I regret not seeing that tour for Illumination Theory, but am so glad we have Breaking the Fourth Wall.

Saw Astonishing leg one with VIP, then took my kids to leg 2 of Astonishing, and I&W anniversary, then did VIP with them last week for this tour. I guess I've now seen as many DT shows with my kids as without them now, and any future shows will at least involved my daughter if not both. After the fun we had on Astonishing and with Scenes, I think we will find a way to wear some kind of costume for future shows again.

ToT tour
One-Off Club Show while on tour opening for Maiden
Opening for Maiden
ADToE Tour
AT tour

All in Seattle except the club show in PDX.

With getting older (me, not them) and committing my limited time and resources to seeing other bands I've never seen, I cannot say how many more times I will make a point to see them.

At least 1 show from every album tour since FII as well as the I&W&B tour. All have been standard shows - no festivals like Gigantour or Prog Nation. Also saw them on a one-off night in Columbus while opening for Maiden, not too long before MP left. I will continue to see them as many times possible in the future whenever they come to the Ohio/Michigan area. Never know when the last one will be so I won't miss any chance I can get to see them.

I'd love to see them again on this tour when it gets to the UK but it really depends on the venue. The soulless, mid-size arenas that DT usually here in the UK don't do bands any favours at all. I can't see me shelling out for one of those. Fingers crossed there are a few slightly smaller, intimate places on the list.

Have to check the stubs but I think I'm at 43 or 44. I've only seen them 5 times Portnoy left.

They might overtake Rush if they're around for another 5 or 6 tour cycles and they keep new music in the set.

Holy cow! That's something like twice per tour, or even more, right?

I've seen them twice, in Luna Park, Buenos Aires. "Panic Attack" from the Chaos in Motion DVD was recorded at my first show. And, I was part of the local fan-club's first Q&A with Jordan and John P., just before the 2nd show. So, both very memorable.

Nope. I was going through a no-DT phase back then. I gave ADToE a second chance in 2013, and have been in love with the new albums ever since. But, back in 2011/2012, I focused on other bands.

Herrick has failed BIG time, considering Herrick seems to live in the city that gets more DT shows than anywhere else! By my count, they've played the NYC area 26 times since Herrick became a fan. (And Herrick is failing to keep speaking in the third person about himself too! )

I've seen them somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 times.  I think I've only missed two or three shows in the Twin Cities since 1994, when I first saw them.  Also drove to Long Island with my friend and some dudes he met on the internet back in 95 (on some very early DT fan club/message board called Ytsecon or something).

One of the best shows of my life was seeing DT play First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis on what must have been the FII tour.  I've always preferred seeing them in standing room club-style venues rather than theaters.

I've seen them 3 times. I don't know if I'll see them again.

Back in the day (mid-late 90's and early 2000's) I went to so many concerts as I was in my late teens-early 20's then living in a major metropolitan area. There was a show or two to go to every week of the year and I dropped a lot of $$ on concert tickets from 1995-2002.

I've gotten older, married, kids, career, moved away, etc. and the desire to go to concerts has really become non-existent. I'm content with cranking up albums. Priorities change. We change.

I have fond memories of DT shows. All 3 that I saw were excellent.

This is a very pertinent point that's also applicable to me.  I attended my first concert in April 1984 (at age 16) and my most recent concert in March 2019 (at age 51) -- a 35 year window.  Without doing too fine an analysis, it looks like 50% of the concerts I attended happened during the first six years of that time period and less than 30% have happened during the last half of that time period.

I'll still see DT and a couple other bands every time they play in my area, but most of the same factors you mentioned also curtailed my concert going significantly.

JLa, why not?

Concerts are too loud, or I am too old, or both. My ears hurt even with ear plugs.
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=53644.0

Also, JLB is getting too much of a hit-and-miss. Going by a lot of YouTube videos, some nights he's good and other nights he's just horrendous. I'd rather not sit through 2-3 hours watching one of my favorite musicians butcher my favorite songs. I'll just get the BluRay instead..

There is light at the end of the tunnel....

When the kids grow up it becomes easier to go out to concerts again.
For quite some years I only went when DT, Opeth, Pain of Salvation or A.C.T showed up. So maybe once or twice a year.

Now that they are older I go to about one concert per month and sometimes take overnight trips for shows which did not happen when the kids were small.

Now they go to concerts with me at times.... (granted not always to my concerts)

First time I saw them was in 1998 opening for ELP and Deep Purple.  Didn't see them again until 2003 on the QR and FW tour.  Then I saw them twice on the Train of Thought tour, the 8V tour, the first Progressive Nation and then the first leg of the ADTOE tour.  Haven't seen them since, but that's mostly due to a combination of them not playing shows in cities close to me on a weekend, or work, or now having a family.  Hoping they can play in either Columbus or Detroit on a weekend on the next leg of the tour.  Would love to see them live again.
