After playing it at dangerously loud volumes over the weekend, I think Mötley Crüe's "Kickstart My Heart" has the all-time greatest gang vocals. Whoa! Yeah! It's freaking huge and I can't think of a song that does it better. Anyone else?

First one to come to mind is Abandon by Mindmaze

Good call on Kickstart. I'm no Crue fan, but I can't disagree with that take at all. There are quite a few songs I feel have those anthemic "gang vocals," as you call them, and do them as well or possibly better. But it's hard to argue when the song is that iconic and well-known. But I'll name a few that come to mind below.
-DT - Profits of War: I hate the song. But the bridge/pre-chorus riff and crowd chant are pretty epic. And it was really cool of them to have brought in a bunch of fans to do that for the studio recording.
-DT - ITPOE: I couldn't mention Profits without this one. Same principle, even if they are a bit more understated and less important to the overall song.
-Trivium: Strife. This one is huge. Trivium has a few of these, but the one in Strife is what came to mind. It is such an OBVIOUS attempt to drop a huge arena chant into a catchy single, but it totally works.

"Walk All Over You" by AC/DC.

Creeping Death. Live especially.

Yup.
Also "Balls to the Wall" by Accept.
-
Any of the DTP songs with the universal choir, by virtue of having probably the largest gang vocals ever and thus the best :P

Not sure about best, but a very good example:

That's Devin Townsend Project.
Interesting picks so far; "Balls To The Wall" is the kind of gang vox I'm thinking of, that's a great call (and I hate that song!).

Gotcha....he did a version of "Natural Science" on a Rush tribute CD once. It was one of the most awful things I've ever heard in my life, so I've steered clear of him.

That is a fantastic call. Great song.

Creeping Death. Live especially.
DIE! DIE! DIE!!
It's great when you're with somebody who doesn't know the drill. "What are they shouting?" You tell them and then they look all nervous like the crowd is going to turn on them.
-
I don't want to say this is the best of all time, if it counts, but I really liked the vocals in the bridge verse of Rise Against's Collapse (Post-Amerika).

By adults, fool.

I'm not sure what qualifies as gang vocals, but Walk by Pantera came to mind.
Bro Hymm by Pennywise is a good one, lots of sing a long WHOAs in an emotional song

Imagine being the security guard in front of the stage, back to the band, looking at 20,000 or so crazies screaming DIE, DIE, DIE at the top of their lungs. Probably, disconcerting at best...

You know, those big backing vocals, lots of layers and people singing at once. Think Kickstart My Heart. WHOA! YEAH! Or the "Balls To The Wall" chorus.

Yea, but like Walk doesn't have the "gang" vocals on the album, but that gets everyone to sing the parts live. I guess similar to Metallica in this context.
ANd I don't know, I absolitely love Kickstart my Heart, probably my favorite Crue song, but I've never really sat and thought of it as a great gang vocal song. I guess maybe it is, but like power metal in general has so many awesome sing a long chorus that are large and bombastic. Like Avantasia for example, half their songs or more have huge gang vocals that are just awesome, but not sure they can rank so highly if you don't get a an arena sized crowd to sing along with it the way Metallica or Motley Crue could. I could think of tons of punk songs too, I named the Pennywise track, but songs from AFI like Girls Gone Grey are huge for their large backing vocal sing a long chorus.

Pour Some Sugar on Me.

Oh, if we take live performances into account, then the possibilities skyrocket. I'm talking specifically about the studio recordings though. I suppose entire choruses count for this, though I was thinking more bite-sized vocal moments. But there are quite a lot of Avantasia moments that could fit this...
-
Yea, I think I wasn't sure how broad this question really was. There's definitely a lot that I would consider but to narrow down the best is kind of tough.
Pour Some Sugar on Me.
There's quite a bit of Def Leppard songs that could fit this

If we include live performances, Rammstein - Ich will. That chorus!

LOL. That totally happened to me. Saw them for the first time on the AJFA tour, and the sold out crowd at Maple Leafs Gardens were chanting "DIE, DIE, DIE". Scared the shit outa this small-town boy.

I could name a lot of Thrash bands with gang vocals but, Death Angel-Third Floor, and Overkill-Hello From the Gutter. :metal
