Title: Raise your hand if you saw DT on the Metropolis: 2000 tour!
Post by: KevShmev on December 08, 2018, 11:19:33 AM
With the band planning to play all of Scenes on the upcoming tour, I am curious as to how many current forum members saw Dream Theater on the Metropolis: 2000 tour when they played all of Scenes at most of the shows.

*raises hand...twice* :coolio :hat

Metropolis 2000 was my first ever Dream Theater concert. I remember getting closer and closer to them playing "Home" and thinking to myself "I can't believe I'm about to witness this live."

Awesome, awesome show.

Saw it twice, with different set lists after sfam. Spock’s beard opening.

The answer is both yes and no. I have seen them for my first two times back then - in 1999 I saw the warm up shows, where they played just some new songs, and then in the summer of 2000 I saw them a second time with a free style setlist, culminating in A Change of Seasons as encore. But I did NOT saw the whole thing played in its entirety, damn!

Through the years I've heard all the songs except Through Her Eyes live (well, and Regression), and I hope I will finally compensate for it next year even if 20 years later!

Saw them twice in NYC in that tour and the second was the filmed Roseland Ballroom show. Stood in line pretty much all day at the front with a bunch of fellow mp.com forumers which was fun and I was in the front row for the first set and in one of the crowd pans on the dvd.

SFAM was never one of my favorite albums but I'm interested to see them perform it again.

Saw them in Detroit but don't see it in the concerts listing on this site. Dixie Dregs and I believe Star People opened. Show was at State Theater - 2/18/2000 according to Setlist.fm. Worked my way up to the front row and it was an amazing experience.

Saw them four times during the SfaM tour cycle. Twice on the warm-up tour with Tiles opening, once on the M2 tour proper with the full album being performed (and Spock's Beard opening) and again on the last European leg with Porcupine Tree opening. Good times!

Great topic!
Since the majority of the members here (and DT fans in general) are younger,it's good to know who has been a
long time fan,and especially since SFAM (my first album of them, and my favorite of all times!)
November 1999 i bought the album.Never had heard anything like that before (or prog in general). My first couple listens were a huge disappointment.
But ,although i don't know why,i kept on revisiting it and it grew on me listen by listen.

Fast forward to summer of 2000. 14/7 (for Europe),7/14 (for US),7 of July for all
Rockwave festival,Athens,Greece.2 greek acts were about to open the show,DT were just before the headliners Iron Maiden (had just released Brave New World,Dickinson and Smith had come back and the anticipation for them was huge.)
October '99 i had seen Maiden live in Athens, and as much as i wanted to see them again,i wanted DT to perform their new album in its entirety.
Which would not happen if they weren't the headliners.
Some days before the big day, news were spreading around that Gers (one of their 3 guitarists) had fallen off the stage in a previous show and had broken his arm
(or,at least,he wouldn't be able to perform in Athens).
Bingo!
Now DT were about to have the central spot in the lineup. On Thorns I Lay were first,Septic Flesh were next, and In Flames replaced DT just before the headlining act.
After having seen all 3 groups playing their strongest sets, time had already come. From 21:30 to 22:00 many people on stage were preparing the show.Instrument technicians, lighting, soundcheck, all these things.
And finally, lights go off,the clock starts to tick and the pre-recorded voice of the hypnotherapist is heard.Crowd goes nuts.
Petrucci enters the stage with shorts,Portnoy behind his kit,Myung is the silent robot we all know, with his looooong hair,
Rudess on his first appearance on Greece.
Overture 1928 begins. The sound is crystal clear, the music is superb.Listening to the album that had gotten me all winter long,
with my new musical heroes performing it was like an orgasm.Guitar solos are just mesmerizing.Did i mention i had a musical crush on Petrucci?
 :metal
Strange DejaVu,and finally LaBrie on stage. All five of them,in front of me,i could see everyone of them very clearly.
I am peeing my pants from joy, excitement and relief.
For the next 100 minutes,SFAM is taking us through a journey. My emotions skyrocketed.Through her eyes made me literally cry.
When the album is over,i can't believe what i just saw.
But i see on stage Petrucci taking his 6 string off and someone passing him the 7 string.

The Mirror.F@@@ck!!!My head is spinning uncontrollably.I can't see anything with my hair in front of my face.
I shout all the lyrics. My throat hurts. After that,i remember them playing
Just let me Breathe
Acid Rain ,the first part of it (sick sick sick)
Caught in a new Millenium
Pull me Uder/Metropolis PT1
And finally.....The trooper.
I cannot describe what happened when we heard the riff.Panic attack!
And after 2 hours,Dream Theater left the stage, leaving us all in shock at what we had encountered..

After that,i saw them again,2 days in a row in 2002,6/11 and 7/11 in Athens.
The show after those,in Istanbul would be the last of the SDoIT tour.
And,finally,my last DT show was July 1 of 2007,in the Rockwave festival again.Promoting Systematic Chaos, and they were second to
Heaven and Hell (Dio,Iommi and the gang).
It's a long time i haven't seen them since.
But,to be honest, they aren't the same bad they were before. The dreamy factor may have gone away (at least for me),their latest offerings haven't caught my attention,i haven't bought their last 2 albums at all (and i have bought all their previous, singles,LTE,
Rudess-Petrucci acoustic,G3 lives etc).
And Systematic Chaos, for me,shouldn't have released in the first place under the name of Dream Theater.
But with all these having said, every new album is an opportunity to remember the magic back then, when a new album would come in my hands,
the ritual listening to it for the first time in headphones and so on.
I hope the new album will be something refreshing, and something i will enjoy very much.
I know that i may have bored you,but it was something i felt like sharing with y'all.

I will never forget the magical moments DT has given me through the years.
And i am forever grateful to them, for having made such a big impact on my musical taste, and on my life altogether.
The journey never ends..
Thanks for reading!

No.  :-\ I got into DT during that time though. I remember being so excited over discovering this amazing band, and also so bummed when I found out they had played in my city (SFAM tour) like a month earlier.

Needless to say I bought tickets for the 6DOIT tour as soon as they became available!

The Roxy, Boston

It was my 10th DT show.

I was at this show as well, it was my 1st. Roxy was a newly built club and the bass was HUGE, still the fattest I have heard the low end at a DT show and I think I’ve seen them 7 times. Have tix to this tour already, full circle 18 years later. So happy they do this for their fans, cause although they have the ability, god knows they don’t have to do it. PS they also played only a matter of time which was one of my favs at the time.

Cool, man. Yes, OAMOT was played, but it was part of the medley.

The thing I remember was how huge the buzz was. The place was packed and it seemed that everything they did beforehand culminated in that show. Amazing. Easily the biggest crowd in the area that they had ever played to.

And yes, also going to the show in April.

Saw DT at Manchester University on the Touring Into Infinity tour, my first DT show and the sound was awful (it nearly always was in there) so when the Scenes tour came around, I made the trip to London to see them in the Shepherds Bush Empire and it was incredible, if I’m not mistaken it may have been Spock’s Beard opening with MP coming on in a mask to do Mystery Train with them from the, then unreleased, Transatlantic album. Saw them again in London on the second run at the much larger Hammersmith Apollo but they didn’t do all of Scenes then. It was a huge set list though including ACOS in full. May have been Porcupine Tree opening on that occasion.

Scary how long ago that is now!

I was only 8 years old when they were touring on the backs of Scenes from A Memory and I have really yet to discover rock music on my own (aside from the Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed stuff that my sister was playing in the background, in addition to the pop and boy band stuff of the late 90s/early 00s) so there was no way I would have known Dream Theater back then.  So this is a definite no.

I would like to see DT, but the ticket prices has priced me out of seeing them in LA.  Maybe I'll get lucky and get a last minute ticket at a reasonable price I like for a reasonable view.

Had some friends that listened to Dream Theater in the 90s and couldn't get into them.  I was into more underground stuff at the time.  Ended up working with some people that were into Dream Theater in 2000 and I casually brought it up, just to make conversation.  They said, "We're going to see them if you want to come along."

"Sure."  After all, it was only 20 bucks.

After the first few songs, I was bored to tears.  I couldn't deny that *some* songs had great riffs and melodies but geez, get over yourselves.  Where'd the vocalist go, anyway? Are you actually playing a song anymore or just jamming?

Regardless, I bought Scenes From a Memory.  Listened to it occasionally.  Heard a bit of SDOIT when it came out.  Bought Train of Thought on a whim and decided to see them again on a whim.   Finally in 2004 I went from casual fan to super fan.

Side note: Spock's Beard opened in 2000.  What a fun band. A little bit different.  A few years later I finally got a Spock's Beard CD called Snow.  It sucked.  I honestly thought I might have gotten the name of the band wrong.  I still can't stand anything Neal Morse has done.  Did I really enjoy Spock's Beard or did I imagine it? No one knows.

It’s the only album tour (besides WDADU) that I didn’t see. They skipped Seattle that tour (and the next...but I managed to road trip to Frisco to see SDOIT).

Right now they appear to be skipping Seattle for this one too, so I’m beginning to think I’ll never get to see Scenes live.  :\

I noticed that the dates for the first leg of the North American tour on wikipedia are not complete.  The St. Louis show is missing - February 14th, 2000.

The cool thing about that for us is that our show was added a week or two after the initial dates went on sale, and by then, we (my older brother, two friends and I) had already bought four tickets for the show at the House of Blues in Orlando - dead center in the first row on the balcony.  So when we got a show, we were like, "heck, we'll go to that one, too!"

The show here in St. Louis was great, but the one in Orlando was special, and still remains probably one of the best 2-3 shows I've ever seen.  That was back when I drank on a regular basis and could hold my liquor, and I had just enough before and during the show to get a good buzz doing, but not too much to where I was a drunken fool. :lol :lol  We all had an absolute blast. :hat

Me!

Phoenix August 2000 (This is the show where the "Train Wreck" bootleg was recorded). The band screwed up on Metropolis like 3 times. We got the B setlist, which was not the complete SFAM album so I'm stoked in seeing it completely in Austin next year. We did get ACOS and that was amazing by itself.

I took about 5 years off my life. I was a poor college student, so a couple of buddies and me drove from El Paso TX to Phoenix (6 hour drive) and drove back after the show. Definitely worth it. It was also our first time seeing DT so it was a very memorable trip/concert.

Saw them at the Electric Factory in Philly twice that year, once in February 2000 with Star People (very weird band)/Dixie Dregs and once in August 2000 with Spock's Beard. I was only 14 years old, and for an aspiring musician just getting into progressive music, it was life-changing. Because of this, I'm not too excited to see SFAM again as I've seen most of the other songs quite a bit throughout the last 18 years, but it is an amazing album so I'm sure I'll get into it once I'm actually there.

I missed it and have no explanation as to why.  On the first American leg of the tour, they played Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in OC/LA.  I was in the middle of my second year of law school and easily could have attended one or more of the shows.  On the second American leg, they played two shows on Sunday and Monday night.  I'm guessing the Monday was the first day of my third year of law school, so maybe that's why I missed it.  Still bums me out that I didn't see at least one night on that tour.

I managed to catch them 6 times on that tour, 5 of which they performed the whole of SFaM...well almost. One of the shows was the infamous fire marshall gig in LA, where we were kicked out of the Palace after they shut down DT's show, literally pulling the plug on it! Good times and good memories! Hard to believe it's almost 19 years ago.

FWIW, I've never been a huge Spock's Beard or Neal Morse fan myself (tho I do like Transatlantic and Flying Colors). But I got into them on that tour too. They were promoting their "V" album, which I picked up and I still really enjoy. Was quick to pick up Snow when it came out, and I could never get into that album. So if you never listened to SB's V album, give it a listen - perhaps you'll like it.

I wish I could have attended a show on this tour, but I wasn't aware of DT yet. But the Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York DVD was played on constant rotation starting around early 2002 when I finally discovered them. I absolutely could not get enough of the entire DVD, 3 hours goes by quick when it's DT.

I cannot wait to catch them on the anniversary tour! I hope we get to see Theresa Thomason in some capacity.

I don't think it's gonna take away anything from the performance at all.  I can watch Live Scenes from New York if I feel the need to see it with MP.  Now, I'm looking forward to it with MM.  :tup  MM is just as energetic and enthusiastic, and I love watching him play.

**Raises hand**

Atlanta, GA at the Tabernacle. I was 23. Star People and Dixie Dregs opened. Incredible concert and it is one that sticks out in my memory because that album is when I went from casually liking DT to being a full on super-fan.

I remember a guy in front of me at the show talking about how the Dixie Dregs were the best band in the world and their musicianship was the best in the world and Rod Morgenstein (he referred to him as "Hot Rod" a lot) was the best drummer in the world blah, blah, blah. He wouldn't shut up after their set. I like the Dixie Dregs too, but he was really snobbish about it.

Then DT came on and played SFAM. The guy sat there with eyes wide open and mouth open for most of the time. After Fatal Tragedy he kept saying, "That keyboard player is insane! Who the hell is that guy?" After Dance of Eternity he threw up his arms and said, "Where did these people come from?" At the end of SFAM he was blown away. He was shaking his head and saying, "Unreal! Unreal!"

I guess he became a fan that night.

Curious that a fan of the Dregs wouldn't have known who JR was....

August 4, 2000 - The Electric Factory, Philadelphia

My brother and I were (and still are) prog guys, and went there to see Spock's Beard, and we were going to leave after their set.  My brother ran into a friend of his from high school, who was there with his teenage son, an aspiring guitarist.  He convinced us that "we had to stay and see this band!  They are amazing!"  We figured, we're here, why not.  Now I had heard of Dream Theater at that time, seeing their name on a few bootleg video lists I had come across, but had not heard note one of their material.

When they hit the stage and broke into 'Metropolis', our jaws just dropped!  The power, the musicianship, the spitting (WTF!), the notes (sooooo many notes), we we're immediately hooked.  They were really loud that night, so loud in fact that we left before the encore, ACOS.  (I know, rookie mistake.)  We talked all the way home about what we had just witnessed.  Just an incredible band!  I went out the next day to buy their latest release, only to buy Falling Into Infinity by mistake.  I picked up SFAM the next day, and proceeded to listen to it both at home or in the car almost exclusively for the next six weeks.  After seeing DT over 20 times now, and buying essentially everything they have available since then, SFAM is still my favorite DT album, and in my personal desert island top 10.

Having never seen SFAM live in its entirety, I'm looking forward to the experience.

Always surprises me why DT doesn't have a bigger following up in my favorite city/location. Tons of DT fans, and they can easily play the venues there. I know the Paramount was closed for renovations for awhile, but it has been open for the last several years, hasn't it? 2800-capacity, if memory serves. If that's too large for DT, then the Moore Theatre, or even the SHowbox would work. Very strange.

My only guess is that Seattle is off the track a little bit in terms of travel. Gotta go north quite a ways.

^^ I mean if you are able to hit San Francisco and Los Angeles on a regular basis, the cost to travel straight north to areas like Seattle and Vancouver, BC, Canada certainly isn't more than the money you can make playing in those areas.  It baffles me like that when it comes to people scheduling a tour.

I know, right? And if memory serves me correctly, JR had already done the Rudess/Morgenstein project before SFAM was released.

Back to the 2019 tour, I'm glad they're doing SFAM in full for all those who hadn't seen it back in 1999-2000. I'll have to say that it may not be as "especially special" like it was back then, but I would hope it will still be good. I'm going to see them this time around. For those who saw it then and will see it in '19, I wonder what our responses will be?

Just curious, how did you become a Spock's Beard fan and not know about DT? And you are in the northeast. You are probably the first person that I read on the forums that was a SB fan first and then became a DT fan.

I got into SB after hearing Nick D'Virgilio on the Genesis Calling All Stations album.  (42 year Genesis fan here.)  My brother had also heard the SB album Beware of Darkness and we thought they were worth checking out, so I picked up BoD and The Kindness of Strangers (which is still one of my faves) along with V.  My bro has long lost interest in SB, but still loves DT.

The internet was in its infancy back then, so DT information was not that readily available, at least to me.  (I was still doing DAT trades via padded mailers at that time.)

There's a few of us on here who knew about the band before IaW came out. I read a review about WDaDU in RIP! magazine, and the comments about how much they were influenced by Rush (my favorite band at the time) was enough for me to pick up the album in the summer of 1989. Didn't get to see them live until the Milwaukee Summerfest gig in 1993. YtseRush however was fortunate enough to see their last show with Charlie.

That good fortune has not been lost on me.

Had the album in the late spring/ early summer of '89 after seeing it in The Spirit Of Rush fanzine (Issue # 8 I think.) listened to the crap out of it and hadn't heard anything else about them until I turned the corner in New York City and saw the marquee "Marillion with Dream Theatre" I was there to see my first Marillion gig without Fish and was pleasantly surprised when the band was opening. Planned to get a Marillion shirt that night, but I wasn't sure if I'd ever see Dream Theater again so I got the When Dream And Day Unite shirt instead.

I'll never forget that night.

Attended the Phoenix show, also my first ever DT show, in Jan., 2001. There were couple transvestites at the show. James even mentioned about them a few years later in one of the dvd commentary track.

I saw the second or third US leg in Chicago, when they played a regular setlist and not SFAM in full.  It's the only time I've ever seen DT.  They closed with A Change of Seasons, and as much as I love the band, I just haven't felt the need to go see them again after that show.  I would have gone to the I&W tour last year, but the timing didn't line up with events in my personal life.

I was also at this show.  I do remember that there was a bit of a slip up on Pull Me Under and James looked back at the band like "WTF guys?!" Beyond that, it was amazing show - driving back to Charlotte from Atlanta that night and then working the next day was no fun though.

Keep in mind that, before I&W, the band only played live in New York (30 shows, 19 of them as Majesty), Connecticut (2 shows) and Rhode Island (1 show).

I first became aware of DT sometime not long after WDADU was released (in March 1989).  Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime (released in May 1988) had been really successful, and some of the videos were getting more play on MTV than was typical of a "thinking man's metal band."  I recall seeing a short report about other bands you might like if you like Queensryche.  The three bands were Fates Warning (which had released No Exit in 1988 and either had just released Perfect Symmetry or was about to do so), Dream Theater (who had just released WDADU) and I think the third was Crimson Glory (who released Transcendence in November 1988).  I went out looking for these bands.  I found and bought No Exit pretty quickly and became a huge fan, and I seem to recall seeing Transcendence but not buying it.  But I couldn't find anything by DT.  For the next few years, I would look without success, and then "Pull Me Under" broke in the summer of 1992.

My first DT show was November 12, 1992 at a club in Westminster, California called The Marquee (which is now a "gentlemen's club" called The Library).  After the show, handful of fans hung out with the band in the parking lot for about half an hour (except that Kevin Moore stayed on the bus).  I got them to sign my I&W CD booklet.  Fortunately, I got KM to sign the booklet at a show about six months later on one of the subsequent legs of the tour.

Didn’t come to Seattle and I couldn’t afford the road trip.

IAW, Awake, and FII tours all came to Seattle. SFAM was the first one that didn’t.

SDOIT didn’t either, but I managed a road trip to San Francisco for that one.  Then the QR/DT Summer tour and the TOT tour both had Seattle stops.

8V didn’t come to Seattle and I was really sad that I was going to miss that one, but then Setlist Scotty got me a ticket to the Score show….all I had to do was show up. Which I *still* couldn’t afford, and had to turn it down at first. But then I did some electrical work for someone who worked for Alaska Airlines, and got a stand-by ticket as payment. The rest is history.

Everything else since then up through TA came to Seattle.  I even got to see a rare headline BCSL set because I opted to go to Portland to see DT headline rather than the Seattle show opening for Iron Maiden.

D/T didn’t come to Seattle, which was disappointing. And the AVFTTOTW tour was the first, and still ONLY tour that actually came to Seattle that I didn’t see. We were still just coming out of COVID, and I just wasn’t quite ready yet.

Oh man…I wrote it down somewhere so I wouldn’t forget the details.

The short version is that, because I was flying standby, I was bumped twice. And the flight I finally got on, I very nearly didn’t. I think there was someone who was supposed to have priority over me, but everyone on the airline staff at that point knew why I was there, knew the stakes, knew that I had already been bumped twice, and knew that *this* flight was my last chance to get to the show or I would miss it altogether.  While they were sorting out who was supposed to go next, an attendant sneaked a boarding pass to me and motioned for me to get my butt on the plane. I thanked her and got on board.

I ended up arriving in front of Radio City Music Hall about 1 hour before showtime.

I even got interviewed in the lobby by one of the camera crew, and I guess (considering the circumstances) I was I bit surprised I didn’t end up in the extras of the DVD…but I was just happy to be there.

And thank you again Scotty. I can never thank you enough. Greatest concert experience of my entire lifetime!

I think I've only missed them 3 times since the SFAM tour, sometimes excluding second legs of the same tour.

SDOIT - Not a huge fan by this point.
8V - working 2 and 1/2 jobs while finishing grad school
AVFTTOTW - Already bought tickets to a bucket list band in town. The real kicker is that I almost always have to drive 3 hours to see DT but they were playing an hour and 20 minutes from me.

It's crazy they miss a big market like Seattle sometimes but I guess being in the furthest reaches of the northwest US does complicate routing sometimes.

Oh trust me. There is even more to that story. I remember that I wrote it all down as soon as I got home so I wouldn’t forget any of the details. Scotty had a copy of it at one point because he wanted to show it to MP I think? (Scotty you can correct me on that if need be) but it was really long and he asked me to make it shorter, but I never felt like the short version captured the intensity of what actually happened. But maybe I should dig that out and post it. That’s probably one of the most entertaining stories that I have to tell.

Definitely dig it up to share - I know it's worth the read! Can't say I remember wanting to share it with MP, but I wouldn't be surprised if I did. But unfortunately the e-mails I have only go as far back as 2008, so I don't have it. And you're more than welcome my friend!
