Let's make some predictions, shall we?
What songs from the back catalog will make it onto the setlist? There will obviously be a decent amount from the new release, but I have a feeling we will be treated to some content from the later MP albums (2002-2009).
I read somewhere on the facebook page that the Scenes album will be played in its entirety. I would assume that they'd create a first setlist with a mix of new and old songs, followed by an intermission and then SFAM. There still needs to be an encore.
Since they're playing that album in its entirety, it would stand to reason that they would include the voice acting to add to the experience. I wonder if they would let Finally Free end with Nicholas dying and the static, then they take a break while the static remains before reemerging to bang out The Glass Prison as the encore.
That would be some sonic ecstasy. :metal
-
Well, I don't know if it is possible or not but my feelings say "The Glass Prison" will be an opener.
-
Aside from Scenes, I won't be surprised to see only a few older songs. They always play a lot of whatever new album they are touring on, so you gotta figure new songs will take up the bulk of the first set (assuming Scenes is the second set), so I could see only 2-3 older songs in the first set and then probably whatever the encore is.
-
First set: 40 min of DOT + Surrender to Reason + 30 min of others Pre-Mangini. I would love to see Glass Prision, but I guess it's too long for this particular structure of the show and maybe, since they will play a lot of new songs and songs never played by Mangini, they will choose the remaining songs from the last I&W tour.
Second set: Scenes, maybe doing Finally Free as an encore.
-
1. New song
2. This dying soul
3. Misunderstood
4. New song
5. New song
6. Surrender to reason
7. Bridges in the sky
8. New song
9. Trial of tears
----
11. Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory
----
Encore: Octavarium
-
Remember the 5 songs Bosk presented to them are:
1. Octavarium
2. The Glass Prison
3. Surrender To Reason / Blind Faith (tie)
4. In the Name of God
5. The Killing Hand
I feel like JP takes this seriously.
I think we'll get all of these if there are two full legs, the 2nd not playing SFAM.
If the show starts at 8:00, I figure they have a 3 hour window. So from 180 minutes..
Scenes (80min)
Intermission (15 minutes)
That leaves 85 minutes for the first set plus encore.
Set 1 for the AFTR tour was 76 min.
Set 1 for the I&W&B tour was 60 min.
If they play 8V for the encore, that really only leaves an 60 min for the first set.
I'd be shocked if both 8V and The Glass Prison made it into the set this time around. If the did ITNOG for the encore, that'd give an extra 10 minutes to the first set.
I do expect Surrender To Reason to be played.

This seems most likely, though I think they will do TGP. I'm guessing:
New Song
New Song
Surrender To Reason
New Song
The Killing Hand
New Song
In The Name Of God
---------
SFAM
---------
The Glass Prison
-
1. New song
2. This dying soul
3. Misunderstood
4. New song
5. New song
6. Surrender to reason
7. Bridges in the sky
8. New song
9. Trial of tears
----
11. Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory
----
Encore: Octavarium
Wouldn’t this be killer!

It’s Surrender to Reason confirmed to be on the set list or is it just a guess?
The way this show is set up I’m assuming we will get whatever first single to be the opener.
1) New Song
2) post-portnoy heavy song
3) 2001-2009 song
4) new song
5) new song
6) pre-SFAM song
7) new song
-——————————
8) Scenes from a Memory
———————————
9) Encore (maybe 8V or Glass Prison)
-
This is a bit tricky, given we don't know the lengths of the new songs. If they're shorter (6-7 min), they will probably be able to play more than 4 or 5. Anyway, here goes:
New Song (first single?)
The Killing Hand
Surrender To Reason
New Song
New Song
New Song
New Song
The Glass Prison
SFAM
Encore: Octavarium/New Epic

Unless they knock it out early, like the did with TSF.

I thought of that too, but that would be too formulaic. If it did end the first set or the show altogether, they'd have to give it a more epic ending, since the studio version ends so abrupt and sudden. Those who have seen it live, do they end it like the studio version?

Best set list, EVER! :metal
-
First off all, I hope they don't play any IAW songs, AIA or BAI, they've been played A LOT in the last few tours. TSCO also falls here, but since they're playing SFAM in full, it's definitely going to be in the set.
I expect them to include STR, since it's the only song from DT12 they haven't played yet and it's a fan favorite from that record.
1. Octavarium
2. The Glass Prison
3. Surrender To Reason / Blind Faith (tie)
4. In the Name of God
5. The Killing Hand
From the list Bosk made, the obvious choice would be playing Octavarium as an encore, but after 2 long sets don't know if they'd want to play a 24 min song, even though the first frew minutes are just Jordan messing around :lol
Btw, if they play STR, which we all think they will, JP's going to need a 12 string guitar, guess which other song uses 12 string guitar? OVM, so it's still possible they might do it.
I also expect TKH to appear, since it's also WDADU's 30th year and that song appeared on the list.
Also, according to that Rolling Stone interview, the album will probaly be mostly shorter songs, so they can play more from DOT without a problem.
-
Not really a 'prediction', but certainly a hope:
5 new songs (40 minutes?)
1 rarity (Speak To Me or Eve would be my pick)
2 oldies (Misunderstood and Stream of Consciousness my picks)
Scenes (80 minutes)
Octavarium (encore - 25 minutes)
That's about the length of an Evening With show. I'd be very happy with The Glass Prison as an encore too, but playing that after all of Scenes From A Memory night after night would perhaps be exhausting for Mangini and Petrucci in particular. Octavarium seems less taxing.
I've also tried to consider James' situation. A tour full of 3 hour gigs can be draining on a vocalist, so he'll need plenty of spaces to relax in that little 'shed' he has on stage. That's why I've gone for Stream of Consciousness instead of In The Name of God.
But honestly, Scenes is more than enough for me to move heaven and earth to see this show if and when it comes to Europe. If they throw in Octavarium as an encore then I'll stalk them all over the globe.
-
1. Opening tape/ New Song
2. New Song
3. The Great Debate
4. Voices
5. New Millennium
6. New Song
7. Honor Thy Father
8. This is The Life
- Intermission -
9. SFAM extravaganza
- Intermission -
Encore:
10. Solitary Shell
11. Metropolis PT.1/Pull Me Under
Octavarium or A Change of Seasons would be cool, but there is more than enough epic on SFAM! This would be my ideal show.
-
^^ I love The Great Debate but I think I remember JP saying it wasn't getting much of a reaction on the ADTOE tour so they dropped it. Still, that doesn't necessarily mean they won't dust it off again. If they do I'll be happy (really anything from disc one of Six Degrees would be very welcome).
-
With JP being very vocal about not considering The Great debate to be good live song, and their catalog being pretty enormous at this point, I would be very surprised to see that song live ever again.
-

Maybe them doing the song in album tempo has to do with the crowd reaction. It would probably benefit a bit more being played faster, one song I feel suffers from the album tempo click.
edit: I'd do this, but I need the track times of the D/T songs first before I make a song selection.
Although it'd be neat to see both The Glass Prison and Octavarium as encores.
-
I said this in other thread, but I'd love to see set 1 to be mostly, if not all, MM era songs. With set 2 and most likely the encore being MP era songs.
-
The Killing Hand
Blind Faith
Octavarium
Bridges in the Sky
Surrender to Reason
-
an old one from Steven Wright:
I went down to the 24-hour grocery store. When I got there, the guy was locking the front door.
I said, 'Hey, the sign says you’re open 24 hours.'
And he says, 'Yeah...., but not in a row.' :D
So, the setlist opens with 'Regression/Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu', then 'In The Presence of Enemies Pt 1', two from DOT, 'Through My Words', 'Fatal Tragedy', 'Misunderstood', 'Beyond This Life', Through Her Eyes' (extended).....end of set one.
Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm 99% kidding.....but it certainly would be different.
-
I decided to edit the first set list I put together and take the results of Bosk's survey into account. I also replaced a track or two because of the length of the first set.
1. New song
2. The Glass prison
3. The Killing hand
4. New song
5. New song
6. Surrender to reason
7. New song
8. Beneath the surface
9. In the name of God
----
11. Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory
----
Encore: Octavarium
-
If the new album has mostly short songs, I’d say we’ll get 5-6 of them for the tour.
-
It’s Surrender to Reason confirmed to be on the set list or is it just a guess?
They always said they wanted to play the songs off DT12 that they didn't play during the Along for the Ride tour.
They had a history tour and they played Behind the Veil.
They played only The Astonishing so that leaves no room for anything else obviously.
They played the Images and Words set and they performed The Bigger Picture.
It's not confirmed they will play it, but I think it's a quite safe bet.

Depends on how good DoT is
-
Like others have said, I fully expect the second set to be SFAM, with a good chance of "The Glass Prison" being the encore (perhaps with one more shorter song after it?). The first set will probably be MOST of DOT, perhaps with "Surrender To Reason" thrown in, and one or two MP-era songs, but not much more than that.
I would LOVE to see them love the new album enough to play ALL of the songs from it live, but that depends on how much they like the material to play live, and if they want to neglect other songs from the previous 13 albums.

I wouldn't mind that at all. Still playing the album, just spread through the sets, and its a nice nod to the concept having an act 1 and act 2.

I would like that but I have a feeling that there will be zero The Astonishing songs in the set.

I kind of hope this as well, mostly because they've already toured the HECK out of that album. The encore is supposed to represent songs that excite the fans, ones that the band are known for or are hits with their audiences, kind of like PMU and Metropolis, though I don't see them pulling those ones out. But I do hope they do play TGP (the static-ending of FF into TGP makes so much sense, especially between the 2nd set and the encore).
If the encore is two or more songs, I really hope they dig out something they have not played in awhile!

JP said during the compositions that the idea was to write the songs in a way that they would sound during the concerts as powerful as they were sounding in the studio. If it's a "live driven writing mode", I think we could expect most of DOT live.

unlikely, because the entire AA cycle is 57 minutes long, I doubt they'll do that, especially considering that DOT may be around 80 minutes long and Met2 is 77 (DOT length is just my guess though seeing as we don't know a lot about it as of now), I'd totally agree with both albums being played entirely though.
-
They won't, but a potentially cool thing to do would be to play The Glass Prison in its entirety as encore, coming off the static noise outro of Finally Free, and then at the end jump into a short medley of the remaining songs (surely it would be a problem to sneak in the very mellow Repentance), just playing a verse or so from This Dying Soul and The Root of All Evil and tie it with the final section of The Shattered Fortress, ending the show on the "I am responsable" section. Maybe just an instrumental short medley of the most defining riff of those two other songs would do, and then jump directly to the final solo and ending of TSF.
-
I'm happy to go see them anyway (as ever, since MM came on board. Wasn't always the case earlier on, and I've seen three consecutive Portnoy-era tours)

In that case they could play TGP and Shattered Fortress after that. SF revisits all other songs and considering the opening riff is from TGP it would make sense IMO.

No AA suite please! Great stuff but takes up too much space in a setlist or encore. Besides, that's more of MP's thing. DT can find plenty of other gems from their catalog to work with..

I LOVE BAI, but I think it's time to give that spot to something else. I understand why you've got the mini-Awake set at the end, but I'm not sure about it. Maybe give that album a nod on the second leg of the tour. Good song choices, though.

Well, I can see them replacing it with Surrender To Reason and a short song from DOT.

In the new issue of Prog magazine James says that they will be giving a nod to Awake for its anniversary so at least one song will come from there. A Mind Beside Itself for the end of set 1 or the encore perhaps?

Not yet but it’s not much to worry about, it’s basically a small part of the press release in the news section and the Awake part is the only new info I found.

That would be sweet, but I'm guessing they will open with a song from the new record.

Not so happy about Awake being celebrated, because of the already mentioned double celebration in 2014. Also because of poor James :D. After the very demanding Images and Beyond Tour, they should have focused more on songs from FII upwards. Maybe give more love to 6D (besides TGP). That stuff is way more easy to sing for him than Awake stuff.
