Back from being gone! After a year of not having had the annual Haken Survivor on DTF (we had the league ran by DoC last time around, which meant I didn't do the Haken Survivor for a change, because they would be so close together..), here it is yet again! Coinciding with Haken's new studio release, which at the time of writing this I still haven't heard, because my pre-order hasn't arrived yet, we're set out to rank all the band's songs once more.
I'm going to stick to the traditional Survivor method, in the sense that I'm not going to do an album ranking to decide how many songs off each album go to the Finals before starting with the main thing, but there will be one twist. We're doing the following albums:
- Aquarius (2010)
- Visions (2011)
- The Mountain (2013)
- Restoration (EP, 2014)
- Affinity (2016)
- Vector (2018)
- Bonus Round: Enter the Fifth Dimension (Demo 2007/2008)
From each album, the top 2 will automatically go to the Finals, while the song placed third goes to a Consolation round. From Restoration, the winner goes to the Finals, while the song in second place goes to Consolation. All the songs placed fourth on the albums will join a Play-Off, of which the winner will join Consolation. This pool of songs sends three more songs to the Finals as well. See the next post to see this in 'detail'.
The whole 'Demo Survivor' will run simultaneously with the Play-Offs/Consolation rounds and doesn't influence the rest of the Survivor in any way.
I'm going to start this one in the coming week and I'm going to run one round a day. I might skip over some weekend days, because I'm usually busier then, but I'll try to keep this running quickly. If I can keep the pace, this will be over before the end of the year.
Here's all the main threads for the previous 5 editions I ran. It's quite interesting to see how the collective DTF perception of the Haken songs has changed over the years. Fun times were had. Let's see what this year brings, right?

Some time off the weekends sounds just fine for me, I'm not on DTF for most of the weekends, so that's great. This also gives me an excuse to listen to the whole Haken discography again, which is also great.
However, I basically listen to Aquarius at least once a month. I'm ready for this one. :metal

Well I have all five main albums now, and will certainly pick up Restoration at some point in the coming months I reckon, so I'm in a good place to take part, if I fancy it.

Restoration is just three songs, so you could sit that one out, while you join the rest :)

I acquired the demos quite awhile ago (probably about 6-8 months before Restoration came out) so I'm very familiar with those recordings as well. But I should give them another spin, as it's been awhile.
Really looking forward to this one.

Then there’s no good way to do this, is there? In the five times I’ve ran this survivor, never have I encountered any ‘crushing negativity’. I know the Survivor format isn’t flawless, but the point is not to get a completely accurate ranking of Haken’s music. It’s supposed to be fun and not to be taken too seriously. I know I don’t.

Precisely why I came up with the league format. Just seems more positive than voting off your least favorite round after round.

I've been absent from the P/S forum for awhile, but this might bring me back in. I've been listening to a lot of Haken lately and this would give me an excuse to filter down my favorites from each release!

I added the Play-Offs specifically to give good songs from albums with too many good songs a chance to reach the Finals as well. Glad to see that mechanic is appreciated.

Man, glad to see you there again! Where were you? Is everything alright? I honestly thought you died or suffered a terminal disease or, well, you get it. No offense. When someone disappears here, I always think the worst.

I was super stressed out. Exams and my grandfather was hospitalised, and my girlfriend broke up with me. Just a lot of shot that I had to deal with, and I didn't really have it in me to also be on DTF.
But I'm in a much better place now. Exams worked out (though there will be new ones coming up, as always), my grandfather is feeling good again, I have a new job that I'm very happy with, and also met someone else that I very much like spending time with.
So yeah! I decided now was the best time to drop back in on you guys, see what you've been up to. :P

Nice that you're back man! Also glad to hear that everything's settled down and that you're doing okay now. On DTF stuff is.. like usual. With more roulette shenanigans than ever before I'd say.
Also, this Haken survivor ... I said I wouldn't do weekend days, which is why this one will start TOMORROW EVENING (my time). I know that's a Sunday, but it will run through Monday as well. If I'd start it right now, I couldn't update is as frequently, so I want it to begin in the evening. That would mean I can get a new round started every time a previous round has ended.

Since you asked, well, I'm alright, pretty much same old here. My grandfather actually passed away while you were away from DTF, but hey, that's life for you.

Like I stated in the last two rounds for Affinity, I will take a break from this Survivor for this weekend and since Christmas comes basically directly after that, for Christmas as well. The Survivor will continue with Vector on Thursday the 27th.

A little something while we're on this break:
As this is Affinity's second season of participation in the Haken Survivor, I've been comparing the results from 2016 to now. Lapse has jumped up 3 places from 8th in 2016 to 5th in 2018, and Initiate has dropped 2 places from 5th in 2016 to 7th in 2018.

I'm only really seeing this comment right now, but this would have been a nice idea indeed!! Maybe I can get something like this going for the next year. It was very enjoyable with the Ayreon Survivor, and I bet it would be fun with Haken's as well.

Celestial Elixir got a total of 7 votes in the entire Survivor before this round (and honestly, I'm thinking the lone vote it got in Round 1 of the Aquarius Survivor was a troll vote). I think that kind of speaks volumes about how obvious the outcome was. While there was a change in the top 3, with a new song in there, the top 2 remained exactly the same as the last time I did this.

Going back through the history of survivor finals is just watching visions drop from consistently getting #1 to coming in 9th over the course of 6 years :lol

What's very interesting is that, apart from Celestial Elixir at the top, every song above Visions was released after it. Is it a sign of a band improving over time, that even a great song such as Visions gets bumped so far down the pecking order by songs that followed it in the discography?

A very worthy winner, since I think CE is their best song ever. And yes, I thought Visions was going to end up much higher.

This is the fourth consecutive Haken Survivor Championship for Celestial Elixir. (Visions won the first two editions.) Does anyone know who won the League in 2017?

The Architect won that one, which surprised me back then, because it didn’t do as well in the Survivor in 2016.
