Title: Spider-Man: Natural Webs v. Synthetic Webs
Post by: PetFish on October 20, 2018, 10:29:52 PM
I much prefer the natural webs.  I feel it fits better and more in-line with how he's got spider abilities.

I feel the synthetic ones are disingenuous to the idea of Spider-Man.  If they are man-made then why aren't they being used everywhere and/or by anyone?  What's to stop Joe Villain from using them also?  They are probably really expensive so prior to Stark getting involved how would he be able to afford them?  What's their power source, again, before Stark getting involved?

A natural web would be affected by Parker's well-being and health, as seen in the second Maguire movie where he doubts himself and starts to lose his abilities.  As he gets tired and low on energy his webs will also lose strength and provide a more genuine feeling of danger and peril whereas now it feels like he's invincible.*

*Sadly, I find this is the case with most super hero movies these days.  They are never really in danger of losing.  Even non-supers like Hawkeye or Legolas never seem to miss their shots.

I grew up on the synthetic webs of the comic books but I do think it was a good change Raimi did for his movies making it natural.

It makes no sense that natural webs would come out of his arms though. It should come out near his ass. That would be pretty amusing actually.

Gross.  Maybe if he were in a Jay & Silent Bob movie they could do it.

What if he forgets his web-makers on the bus or something?  What if Aunt May finds them and goes to town?  Do they ever run out of juice (not that I know of)?  What if Joe Villain breaks them while fighting?

Having natural webs just makes more sense to me.  Bleh.

I'm completely with PetFish on this one. The natural does seem to make far more sense from a "bitten by a radioactive spider" point of view.

Although I could have sworn there was an incarnation in the comics where it was natural?

In the cartoon, Green Goblin crushed them, and I believe they've been shorted out a few times.

Artificial webs because it also highlights how Peter is a scientific genius and not just a lucky kid.

This is a great answer.

King-Man uses natural spelling, not synthetic spelling.

Yeah, I don't spell check.  I'm a terrible human being.

You could simply say you don't care. It would at least answer my question. Just trying to understand. I know its the joke around here that you always have typos, but I pride myself in making sure I never have errors, and still make them sometimes. I won't derail the thread anymore.

I don't have an answer. I just never check.  Not that I don't care.   Subconsciously I might want to spite my cousin who makes it seem like the worst thing possible.

I always say to someone, "Not spelling correctly or not proofreading does not represent the kind of person I am."

Though people seem to correlate the 2.

Adami, oh snap! :lol

Artificial.  The bite didn't give him 8 arms or 8 eyes, so it doesn't make sense that it would give him natural webs, either.

The mutation gave him powers, but not new body parts (i.e., web glands).  That's why he had to create artificial web shooters.

Yeah, but he *did* get reflexes, sticky hands/feet, strength, agility, "spider sense", etc so why stop there?

Eight eye/legs/etc would fall into the "turning into an actual spider" thing, which would be 'aw, hell no', but I don't see a reason to not have natural webs that are more concealed than webshooters on each wrist with lights on them to draw attention and make people wonder what they are and "hey, are you Spider-Man" speculations not to mention technology that anyone can get their hands on and *be* a spider-man.

I've also just recently re-watched the Toby Trilogy and a few things aside they are great.  I think if the new guy, who looks age-appropriate, did the Toby Trilogy it would have looked better but overall the TT is pretty great... and I hate James Franco so much.
