Since it is still a slow time for DT news, let's play a (pointless) game. Make an EP out of each DT full studio album! Why? For no reason at all.
For the definition of EP, we'll use the UK standard:
Maximum of four songs
and
Does not exceed 25 minutes
Game!
-
Pull Me Under - 8:14
Another Day 4:23
Metropolis Part I: The Miracle and the Sleeper - 9:32
Wait For Sleep - 2:31
Total - 24:40
-
Octavarium -24 mins.
Did I win?
-

ToT -
As I Am
Honor Thy Father
Vacant
Stream of Consciousness
8V -
The Root of All Evil

EDIT - CRAP....I didn’t read the 25 min rule. Sorry. Maybe I’ll redo it later.
There were only two rules :loser:
Yes that 25 minute mark makes this really hard.
-
When Dream and Day Unite
A Fortune In Lies
Status Seeker
Afterlife
The Killing Hand
Images and Words
Pull Me Under
Surrounded
Metropolis Pt.1
Awake
The Mirror
Lie
Scarred
:metal

Here are my selections, I stuck with the 25 minute mark but TA has more than 4 songs. Some are good representations of the albums, others are missing a song or two like TOT or Awake. The double/concept albums are just impossible, with having to cut too much out.
WDADU - 22 minutes
Ytsejam
The Killing Hand
The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
IAW - 24 minutes
Pull Me Under
Metropolis, Pt 1
Under a Glass Moon
Awake - 23 minutes
Erotomania
Voices
The Mirror
FII - 23 minutes
Peruvian Skies
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
SFAM - 22 minutes
Overture 1928
Home
The Dance of Eternity
Six Degrees - 24 minutes

A Nightmare to Remember
A Rite of Passage
ADTOE -23 minutes
Bridges in the Sky
Breaking All Illusions
DT - 22 minutes
Illumination Theory
TA - 24 minutes
Dystopian Overture
The Gift of Music
2285 Entracte

The four song limit is no issue, but the 25:00 limit is, and I'd be curious to know where this "UK standard" comes from.
WDaDU (21:02)
Ytse Jam
The Killing Hand
Only a Matter of Time
I&W (23:33)
Metropolis
Wait for Sleep
Learning to Live
Awake (24:39)
Voices
The Silent Man
Scarred
ACoS already is an EP....
FII (16:00)
Hollow Years
Hell's Kitchen
Anna Lee
SFAM (25:00)
Fatal Tragedy
Home (with 0:55 of canoodling cut off the beginning and/or middle of Home so that I can use Fatal Tragedy instead of Strange Deja Vu)
Dance of Eternity
6DoIT (22:23)
Blind Faith
About to Crash
War Inside My Head
About to Crash (Reprise)
ToT (with each song fading out 16 seconds early to meet the 25:00 limit)
Stream of Consciousness
In the name of God
8VA (24:00)
8VA
SC (21:23)
Forsaken
Constant Motion
The Dark Eternal Night
BS&SL (24:41)
Wither
The Count of Tuscany
ADToE (23:49)
Outcry
Breaking All Illusions
DT12 (24:10)
The Looking Glass
Illumination Theory (without the silence and "hidden track")
-

I took it as a derived defition here:

Page 3:
3.0 Albums Definitions Summary
a. Physical Albums
LP/CD/DVD/HD DVD/BLU RAY/MD/SACD/Dualdisc/CD/DVD Sets/ Standard DMD
Over 25 minutes OR more than four songs where the format does
not qualify as a “Maxi” single or remix single as defined by
singles eligibility rules.
So I derived the definition of an EP by considering what would not qualify as an LP album.
-
I just picked my favorite songs from each - that would fit. I'm wondering now if the objective could have been to take this shorter format in order to represent the album as a whole. It would be like the EP gives you all the different "flavors" of the full album without the length, like a promo. My picks would be completely different.

This was quite fun. I only did this for the albums where I thought I could do a somewhat interesting lineup. There's not a single DT album I don't like, and honestly there's very few I could imagine cutting down at all(It's more of a trade-off, but I'd have preferred Falling Into Infinity to have dropped New Millennium and You Not Me/You Or Me and kept Raise The Knife. Only other album I'd change would be to make Images And Words longer; put Don't Look Past Me and To Live Forever on it ), but just choosing three or four songs off each of these albums that flow nicely and create a cool little sampler is a fun little thing. :)
One little thing for just some slightly silly additional fun...
Cleaning Out The Closet:
Raise The Knife
Eve
To Live Forever

In fairness, at 57:30, ACoS was longer than most albums released in 1995 and was longer than WDaDU and I&W. It was an "EP" in name only.

When I started this thread, I was constructing a manageable DT playlist that would make for good listening in the office and would represent their career over the years. It's my leadup to the new album. :p So I thought breaking it up into manageable chunks of EP length would be a good way of going about it. I managed to make a 5 hour 2o minute playlist, which is good for office listening. :D
So my list
A Fortune In Lies
Status Seeker
Afterlife
The Killing Hand
Pull Me Under
Surrounded
Metropolis Pt. 1
The Mirror
Lie
Scarred
A Change of Seasons

Yeah, but the contents that took it over the 23-minute length of the title track was the cover material from the Uncovered show... Really, they were kind of bonus tracks. So... It really was an EP, in spirit at least.

I agree, the covers are just a bonus for it. The only original song/new material is ACOS, and that's why it's a 23 minute EP

I hear ya and don't really care if they call it an "album" or an "EP" or a "banana." If, however, you want to take the song ACoS and add material to make a fully studio album, I certainly wouldn't use scrap heap material (or a song written exclusively by a guy who was no longer in the band).

Actually, I never thought of it until now, but they could have released an "album" in 1995, instead of the EP, exactly with those songs, except for RtK which was made afterwards... and maybe adding another one (like Another Won, lol) or more than one other song from the Majesty era.. Something like:
1- Another Won
2- Don't Look Past Me
3- March of the Tyrant
4- Eve
5- Cry for Freedom
6- To Live Forever
7- A Change of Seasons
(estimated time: 55 minutes, just like the actual released EP)

I went off the rails a bit around 95-96 and wasn't aware of teh ACoS EP for a long time. When I was made aware of it, I had not heard ACoS and didn't care for covers/medleys so I never considered buying it. Then I saw ACoS on the Live Scenes DVD and thought "Holy shit how has my life existed without that song for so long?" I still didn't want to buy an EP just for that though so I obtained the song via other means. I still have no interest in owning it despite being a bit of a completionist.
-
Not exactly 25 mins in each case, but who cares:
WD&DU - Fortune in Lies, Killing Hand, Ytse Jam
I&W - PMU, Surrounded, Learning to Live
Awake - Erotomania, Voices, Silent Man, 6:00
FII - New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, Trial of Tears
SFAM - Beyond This Life, Home, Spirit Carries On
6DOIT - Glass Prison, Blind Faith, Misunderstood
TOT - As I Am, Endless Sacrifice, Honor Thy Father
8VM - Panic Attack, These Walls, Sacrificed Son
SC - ITPOE part 1, Constant Motion, Forsaken, TDEN
BC&SL - Wither, Count of Tuscany
ADOE - Bridges In The Sky, Breaking All Illusions
DT12 - Enemy Within, Bigger Picture, Behind the Veil, Enigma Machine
TA - Moment of Betrayal, Chosen
-

They would never have released "Eve" after Kevin Moore left the band. If they had released ACoS as an album in 95/96, chances are it would have included some of the songs that ended up being on FII, and not leftovers from the Majesty era or songs that weren't good enough to be included on I&W.

Yeah yeah, sure... But they could have done it.. ;D

This seems fun. I'll give it a shot. My goal in each one is first to include the top songs, and then get as close to the limit as possible:
When Dream and Day Unite (24:47)
A Fortune in Lies
Status Seeker
The Killing Hand
Only a Matter of Time
Images and Words (23:34)
Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
Wait for Sleep
Learning to Live
Awake (24:41)
Voices
The Silent Man
Scarred
Falling Into Infinity (24:42)
Peruvian Skies
Hollow Years
Lines in the Sand
Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (24:54)
Overture 1928
Strange Deja-Vu
Home (Edited Version)
One Last Time
The Spirit Carries On
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (22:10)
Misunderstood (Edited Version)
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: I. Overture
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: VII. About to Crash (Reprise)
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: VIII. Losing Time/Grand Finale
Train of Thought (22:39)
Endless Sacrifice
Stream of Consciousness
Octavarium (24:00)
Octavarium
Systematic Chaos (23:57)
In the Presence of Enemies - Part I
The Ministry of Lost Souls
Black Clouds and Silver Linings (24:43)
Wither
The Count of Tuscany
A Dramatic Turn of Events (25:05; 24:51 if I cut the ambient intro of OTBOA)
On the Backs of Angels
Far From Heaven
Breaking All Illusions
Dream Theater (23:15)
False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
Surrender to Reason
The Bigger Picture
The Astonishing (23:27)
Dystopian Overture
The Gift of Music
Chosen
The X Aspect
Astonishing
Most of these were challenging, especially the double albums. There were also a few where I left out one of my favorites: SFAM where I left out Finally Free, because it just takes up too much space for the EP of such a consistent album, FII where LitS+ToT alone exceed 25 minutes, so one has to go, and ToT where the combination of ES and SoC surpasses ITNOG plus As I Am, HTF or Vacant.
On DT12, Illumination Theory is my second favorite, but it had to go because it cannot share the EP with my favorite, The Bigger Picture.

@425 Nice selection!
