Title: 'Distance Over Time' Timeline & Snippets
Post by: Sebastián Pratesi on August 29, 2018, 02:08:20 AM
I decided to put together a timeline of the development of 'Distance Over Time'. I know there already is a thread about the new album; this is more like a summary, in case it's useful to anyone else.

I went through every website and social media of the band and its members, so as to determine the key dates. Below, you'll find the list of them, each one followed by a link to at least one official post which confirms the date; I added extra links when posts were not duplicates of one another.

Some of the many posts by the band (and its members) on social media throughout 2018 have included snippets of the new album’s content. As per a few fellow members' suggestion, I've included a list of links to all of those updates.

Anyways:

How about when the location was revealed?  Seems like this time around the location which led into the writing/recording style is a significant factor.

Yeah, it should be fun to go back once we all know the album and realize we've heard a snippet of Track 4 Which Is Everyone's Favorite alreaady in mid August (or something along those lines), and update the thread as such.

Kind of. Like Max said, the clip is a shortened version of one from JP's Facebook profile. Plus, JP shared the video on June 8th - every other version available (such as the one you asked about) is from the 9th.

But you bring an interesting point, and I agree. Originally, I intended for the list to be strictly about the work on the music. Now that you mention it, it might be important to have it listed. On it! ;)

Maybe you could add other (less) relevant things, like videos with snippets with the links to them?
OK; I'll be adding those later today, at the bottom of the post. That way, people who don't want to listen to spoilers are safe. ;)

If it's fine with you guys, I'll only add to the list those posts where we can listen to (or read) new music, and those which give new information about the album's content. There have been a ton of updates from the studio (specially by Jordan), but many of them do not include any key elements - they are mostly pictures of hamburguers. :P

Seeing that every new update by the band is immediately posted on the other thread anyway, I guess it's unnecessary to share them here too. That said: of course, feel free to bring them up here as well! Just in case I miss it while lurking.  :P

It only took them one month to write the album? Seems really fast, but I'm not considering their level of awesomeness. I'm sure they came up with riffs and other ideas while on the last tour. However, it doesn't seem like it took a lot of time. Didn't they write Train of Thought in a short time period? I guess when ideas flow and inspiration is there, things come quickly.

Great thread!

They've written MOST of their albums in under a month, I&W and FII being two exceptions for reasons that are fairly unique to those albums.

So with all of the five members' major parts recorded, what's left? Overdubs and final instrumental additions, then mixing and mastering, right?

I haven't kept up with the DT14 news circle lately, but has there been a targeted release window? I'm going to guess early 2019, between January and February. Looking back at the details of The Astonishing's recording process, it looks like they finished in late September, and spent the next 3 months mixing and mastering, with a late January release, so I predict the same thing here.

I'll guess a January 25th, 2019 release date. I'll come back here in 2-3 months to see if I'm right. :lol

No dates mentioned as of now. James has to finish the vocal parts and then it's on to mixing and mastering (which btw won't take 3 months as it did during The Astonishing album cycle according to Petruccinator during the Q and A, he actually said that they don't want to spend so much time mixing this time around as a distinct difference from TA), but we actually are close to the finish line concerning the recording process.

All you said is pretty accurate :tup They’ve said the release sould be around late Jan./early Feb. About the recordings, apparently all the instruments are done, and James should finish recording vocals soon. My bet is we’ll get a single around november. Really excited for this album!

Good news to hear/read! I'm sure James will be done his vocals by month's end, which gives them a month or two for mixing/mastering, so a single around November would be good. I suspect album details will drop by the beginning of November, with a single announcement by the middle of that month.

I haven't been deep into DT since before The Astonishing, so it's been quite some time since I've been excited for a new Dream Theater release, so I hope the hype and build-up to this album rejuvenates my love for this band! The snippets posted above sound promising so far, but I will try not to get my hopes up TOO much. If it's as good as ADTOE and DT12, then I'll be happy.

The little thing I heard yesterday reminds me of a mix of Octavarium, a little six degress and a continuation from DT12, just hoping that Richard Chycki does not mix the album. if the sound to Mangini destroyed I almost give up!, ref hihat and machine.!!1

I don't think the band has stated who is mixing the record yet, but if I remember right, someone mentioned in another thread that Chycki is busy with other stuff right now. So hopefully that means he won't be involved. TA wasn't bad, but as a whole, I'm not a fan of his work with DT.

Yes that was actually me. It's safe to assume that the mix will be handled by James Meslin as well (or Jimmy T as the band refer to him) for all we know now. He worked with them on the Xanadu cover. (and I liked that) Chycki had never been mentioned by Petruccinator or anyone else, both in the writing process and afterwards)

I wouldn't assume that. DT has often had different people engineer vs. mix a record. This Jimmy guy might mix it, he might not.

(and I liked that) Chycki had never been mentioned by Petruccinator or anyone else, both in the writing process and afterwards)

Well, according to Mike Mangini:
Quote
Xanadu was a 2nd pass, 1-Take with a few punch-ins recorded/finalized and pass off by Jimmy T. at a soundcheck during the I.A.W. & More Tour ... with used heads to boot... it was post-engineered and mixed by Chycki.

Taken from: https://www.facebook.com/MikeMangini/posts/1553391441376275?__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARAsxI4hHWtr-4hDGi4zTmxKuW6OqURmau5YE-ERiuGKLZrNAnviHR70oVs1tfT598u5TrF1IBOZLEP9hiIPBUWHtocs-NmRl3QyNtMONeuGY2SardjgDRz96c2fDla1OnvRUrDtfc2I__SzK4GUpdrIUJPUlCF9KYT4DNncs4TsAu8vokNS5g&__tn__=-R

So, while Jimmy T certainly tracked it, it was Chycki who mixed the Xanadu cover as well.

As we all know, albums typically need three months of promotion. So, if they are going to have it out in January, we should start seeing something promoting it in the next 30 days. If not, safe to assume it'll be February or later. My guess is, given how polarizing The Astonishing was, the marketing will be a bit more this time around in an attempt to get people on board early. Guess we'll find out!

I think they are already kind of promoting it with the posts and the snippets on social media. TA's music was kept secret until TGOM came out, and the concept was partially announced with the "Rebel or Empire" subscription on their website.. With all the updates of DT14 they have given us since June they created a hype like It was a sort of "mini-promotion" considering that most of DT fans wanted a more Classic DT album after TA

One of the hashtags is #2019, so, I think it pretty much ends the discussion about the album being released this year. Only a really strong demand by the band or the label to change that, and I guess that won't happen.

So let it come!! Can't wait to hear this album  :metal

Yeah, it's a little bit confusing. It might be that James recorded (or, at least, finished recording) his vocals somewhere else, and John announced the last day of the studio being used for 'instruments' recording. Once he was done with his overdubs/solos, that was it.

That's how I interpreted it, anyway.

Thanks for the heads up! I just updated the first post.

Audio clips sound promising enough and I truly hope the album will be in the spirit of the first four albums.

No problem! While lurking (and then researching) the forum for years, I noticed someone does this sort of thing everytime a new album is produced. I figured I'd contribute this time around. :)

Tomorrow is the 14th. One week after the DOT "Sneak peak" was publicly posted.
So... it there going to be a single released? Or a lyric video?

Surely there will be a track released before Thanksgiving, right?
Why not now, one week after the teaser??

unfortunately.

I agree. I've been seeing a lot of people say that the short length means it'll be "no filler", but to me it just means fewer minutes of new music.

That said, I&W is my 2nd favorite album, so if I can appreciate that, then I'll surely appreciate this one

Unfortunately, if you look at the time stamps, vinyl is 61 minutes long, CD is 57. So, it seems we have a song less.

Just because an audio CD can take 75+ minutes of music, doesn't mean you have to fill it.

Since Out of Reach is a ballad, and everything we know about Pale Blue Dot suggests it'll be an epic closer (LTL or BAI style, not the 20+ minute epics), should we expect themes from Out of Reach to show up in Pale Blue Dot?

Edit: I always forget BAI is not a closer, but it has always been agreed that BAI is the true finale while BTS is the end credits.

But that's probably going to be the "standard" CD version. I imagine there's going to be another version with the bonus track in it. If not, it's definitely going to be available as a digital download, so I wouldn't worry too much about it (unless you only listen to music in CD form).
