Title: Your Favorites of these 20+ Minute Songs
Post by: King Puppies and the Acid Guppies on August 11, 2018, 12:09:11 AM
I was listening to The Water earlier today and it got me wondering what everyone's favorite 20+ minutes songs are.

Mine are:
First Light
Duel With the Devil
Cassandra Gemini
Something Wicked this Way Comes
The Odyssey
Gathering Storm
Faustian Echoes

In order of preference...

Frost*
IQ
Floyd
Haken
Yes
Seventh Wonder
Genesis

A good deal of those I haven't heard though tbh, and if it was a different IQ epic like Narrow Margin or The Last Human Gateway it'd be first, and it'd still be close, I fucking LOVE Milliontown.

I think it's just one song per artist, but 2112 missing is rather strange, yes.

Eruption

I intentionally did not put Rush or Dream Theater on the poll, since those likely would have gotten the majority of the votes. I almost didn't put Supper's Ready either.

I'll probably end up doing a part 2, since there are a lot more epics that I know I missed.

I liked that album - you might even say a lot - and was looking forward to seeing it performed live and thought it would be a really good show.  Even still, I was totally unprepared for how incredible Green Carnation was.  They came out, barely spoke a word, and just obliterated all of the other bands at PPUSA that weekend.  One of the best shows I've seen.

Well I think I've only heard 9 of the songs on the list -which is pretty poor going - so it wasn't too difficult for me to whittle it down to 7  :lol

Visions
- Haken

The Odyssey - Symphony X

Something Wicked This Way Comes
- Redemption

Milliontown
- Frost*

Black Rose Immortal - Opeth

Duel With the Devil - Transatlantic

First Light
- Shadow Gallery

Godspeed and Seventh Wonder were the 2 I ended up cutting. I prefer Sleep and Static from that Godspeed album and I haven't listened to Seventh Wonder that much.

Duel with the Devil
Echoes
Supper’s Ready
The Gates Of Delirium
Ivory Gate Of Dreams
Tarkus
Art of Life

There's quite a few on here that I am not familiar with, and from the bands I *am* familiar with, you picked some of the not-so-obvious choices (Gates instead of CTTE, Duel instead of Stranger, The Water instead of Great Nothing, etc.), so this was a bit difficult at first, but here's my seven picks:

Transatlantic's "Duel With The Devil" - While just a step below SIYS for best TA epic for me, this still has some amazing moments throughout, and is a killer way to open Bridge Across Forever! Not many bands in prog would open their second album with a 26-minute epic, but they did it expertly!

The Flower Kings' "The Truth Will Set You Free" - And on the subject of album-opening epics, this one is King. This ambitious piece opens what would become one of the band's most ambitious albums, and this epic does not hold back! One of my favorite TFK epics from a Top 3 TFK album!

Frost*'s "Milliontown" - When Frost* debuted, their first album was one that got a LOT of spins, mostly because of this epic. I haven't heard an epic quite like this one from many bands, and so it stands out as one of the best epics of this century to my ears.

Genesis' "Supper's Ready" - "Walking across the sitting room..." - such a powerful tune, and without this piece, a lot of modern prog epics probably would not sound the same. I think the idea of progressive rock epics in the symponic prog subgenre owe a lot to this one, but even among all that have come since then, this one still stands the test of time.

Spock's Beard's "The Water" - Not the obvious SB epic to pick, but this one is full of raw and youthful energy, and having recently listened to the album (and the live version of this song on "The Beard Is Out There"), I have renewed interest in this epic. It's quite different from anything Neal has written since then, but still has a lot of his unique touches throughout.

Haken's "Visions" - When I was getting into Haken, this was one of the first songs that connected with me, and I fell in love with the piece, especially the epic ending that soars and feels like an immense release. This one gives me musical goosebumps every time I get to the end.

Yes's "Gates Of Delirium" - Like with others, this wouldn't seem to be the obvious Yes epic pick (some would say "Ritual" or "Close To The Edge" would be better), but this one stands out as it was the only album with Patrick Moraz, and his involvement with Yes really took their sound into new and interesting directions, the least of which helped create this sprawling war-influenced epic, which closes with one of the most hauntingly beautiful endings to an epic ever.

And since 7 is an odd number to pick, here are three honorable mentions/close-picks:
ELP's "Tarkus" - Now, of the classic prog bands here, this is one I *would* expect to see on a list of epics, but it didn't quite make my cut. I like it, but it's not an epic I put on very often. Still really great, though, and you gotta love that fast riff in 5. (Also, Jordan Rudess' cover of this is FANTASTIC)

IQ's "Harvest Of Souls" - Yeah, it's very derivative of "Supper's Ready", but so what? IQ rock this one really hard and it's got some of their own spins on old ideas. Basically, if Genesis were a 2000's prog band, this is probably what it would have sounded like, and that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Symphony X's "The Odyssey" - I started in on SX *after* I got into DT, and I think because of that, I never really got into SX as deeply as I did with DT, but "The Odyssey" is one of the best songs I've ever heard and I love what they do with it. Side-note, I once witnessed a high school marching band do a field show based on "The Odyssey" and it was awesome seeing them march in the odd-meters and play some of that great music in a live setting with real horns!

They do cut some chops on it, but strangely enough my favorite part is Nichols tone in the opening moments, it's just sublime, definitely one of his finer moments for me.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head for how I feel about these tracks. I remember back in the day, when that Frost* album first came out, I listened to Progulus Radio a lot. This is where I found a lot of awesome new music to listen to. Anyway, I remember one day Milliontown came on over there and I was just floored, I'd never heard anything like that before. I immediately went out and bought the album. Still a favorite album to go back to from time to time.

I have to disagree with you here. While I love Bridge Across Forever (top 25 album for me) and think both tracks are absolutely great, Duel With the Devil has some sort of novelty that Stranger doesn't have. I think it's easily the best thing Transatlatic has done.

Spock's Beard's "The Water" - Not the obvious SB epic to pick.

Honest question: why not?

The Water is a great song, but I think it's a bit on the obscure side. It'd be like using That, That Is as the choice for a Yes epic. When I think of SB epics, my mind goes to The Light, At The End Of The Day, The Great Nothing, and Jaws Of Heaven even though Healing Colors is my favorite.

I think both are valid as better than the other, it just depends on your individual tastes, and I can understand why some folks might feel burned out on SIYS since Neal has played it so much, even outside of Transatlantic shows (he's done it, either whole or in part, with the Testimony 1 band, on tour with The Flower Kings, and a few other times/tours), but with DWTD, he hasn't really touched that one in recent years, but it's just as good. I just like SIYS, especially its ending, a whole lot more.

Spock's Beard's "The Water" - Not the obvious SB epic to pick.

Honest question: why not?

Basically what DTA said above - when you see fans talk about SB epics, things like "Healing Colors" and "The Great Nothing" probably come to mind first, but looking back at the last Spock's Beard Survivor I did in 2016 (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=45432.0), "The Water" placed fourth over-all in the Finals, while THCOS was 14th, and TGN was 6th, so what do *I* know...

I don't know most of these.  If I could have split my seven votes between "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" and "Gates of Delirium," I would have.  Since I couldn't, I also voted for Tarkus and Supper's Ready (which I honestly think is a bit overrated).

Ahh, you're right. I just typically associate side-length epics with the 20+ minute epic, as they typically are that long, but with regards to CTTE, you're right on its length. I guess after TFTO, the only true-over-20-minute epic would be the FFH suite, despite the band having released several other epics in the 16-19 minute range.
