John Mellencamp is one of those guys that is almost easy to overlook, but when I look his catalogue over, I am reminded that he really does have a lot of good songs, most of which anyone over the age of 35-40 has to know from hearing on the radio and/or on MTV back in the day. Let's see how many peeps here listen to him.

Let's see how many peeps here listen to him.
I just want to be clear that if I do list songs, it does not mean that I listen to him. These are only things I've heard from the radio.

I can divide this list into three categories
1. Jack & Diane and Hurts So Good
2. Songs I really dislike: Scarecrow, Pink Houses, Authority Song, R.O.C.K., Small Town
3. Songs I've never heard of
The two category #1 songs are just ok.
Aside from not really liking his music, I think Mr. Cougar is a bit of a d-bag.

Was going to only vote for Pink Houses, then saw Lonely Ol' Night. Forgot that one, was my favorite of his, would probably be the only song other than Pink Houses I'd listen to now. Now I can recall the video. There are shots from a fair. YOU HERE THAT TAC, A FAIR!

Same profile, same potential career trajectory, huge difference in success.

I think Mellencamp was sometimes referred to as a newer Springsteen, in that they both wrote grass roots rock and roll about America, although Mellencamp's had a much stronger Heartland feel (being that he is a hoosier from Indiana), while Springsteen is a Jersey guy.

JCM put on one of the best concerts I've ever seen actually. He performed for over 3 hours; and actually gave it every thing he had. It was impressive to watch. Being from the Midwest he is mildly popular here. I've seen him twice. Once in the early 2000's and another time at a bar.
Right after college I actually saw him perform in his hometown of Bloomington, Indiana. A friend of mine from high school had moved there, and had invited me to a big family cookout on his grandparetns farm. I was set to start graduate school soon, and went away to cornpone land for a good drunken weekend. Bloomington is small, but its still a college town. So, I thought it would also be a good chance to cozy up to some Indiana girls, on what Tom Petty called, an Indiana night. Let's just say a good time was had by all. Any way, we were in this fairly busy bar, and there was a band playing and about half-way through their first set, Mellancamp came in and played about 5 songs with the band. He was very gracious, and very down to Earth. This would have been right after his Scarecrow album. Apparently he does that sort of thing all the time there. After, he partied a bit with everyone; took a couple of pics (this was pre cell phone days and not many people had cameras with them); and signed some autographs. But for the most part, this was where he lived, so he could just kind of be himself. That always stuck with me, that everyone needs a refuge to call home.
I sound like a huge fan. I'm not, but I do like his Midwest everyman message, it resonates with me; and a few of his songs.

Plus Mellencamp had so many hits, gold albums, stadium tours, running Farm Aid that he more like John Bon Jovi to Springsteen in your analogy.

Joe, I would never think to compare Mellencamp to a poser like Jon Bon Jovi.

I have no issue with Mellencamp, but has he done anything in the last 20-25 years? I mean, I know he wasn't country, but the crossover country thing is gigantic. I feel like his heartland style would've gone well with that.

I go both ways with him. Scarecrow is a great album. The one before and the one after are okay. I don't like the newer stuff - if it's possible to label something "pretentious heartland", this is it. The early stuff, eh.
I don't know. In my book he doesn't get mentioned in the same breath as Springsteen or Bon Jovi.

JBJ always looked up to Bruce. Growing up in NJ. Hell, he even had one of Bruce's keyboardists play on Runaway which was recorded at JBJ's uncles recording studio Bruce hung out at. He likes writing common man rock songs. It was just hair metal storytellers.
