Title: Change my view: summer is the worst season
Post by: The Walrus on June 22, 2018, 02:20:02 PM
1. Bugs. Everywhere. I love insects, but gnats, flies, moths, beetles, bees, they're everywhere. GTFO.
2. Heat. I do not handle heat well and sweat as soon as it gets warm. If I'm not doing yard work or exercising, I hate sweating. I love cold weather.
3. Humidity. Oh sure, it's nice and cool when it's storming, but 24 hours later it's as hot and sticky as the devil's anus. I'll take dry skin in winter over suffocating humidity.
4. AC is way more expensive than heat, which sucks almost as much as
5. Annoying children making lots of noise. I never noticed it as a kid, but why do children scream bloody murder when playing? That's been freaking me out lately.
6. It gets hot way before it's officially summer and stays hot just long enough to rob autumn of its fair share of moderate temperatures.

Seasons, ranked, from most pleasant to offensively bad: autumn > winter > spring > that weird period between winter and spring when it's warm one day and snows the next > summer.

Anything over 80 degrees and I start to get grumpy. Anything over 90 and if I have to do anything more active that getting up to take a leak makes me ill. Luckily in the PNW we have neither humidity nor bugs, so luckily I am spared on those two. I went to college in VA for a couple years, and was only there Sept-May, but even so I cannot imagine living in such heat and humidity over the summer.

I will say there is something splendid about sitting on my front porch on a 70s-ish evening watching my daughter play with the neighborhood kids, or going to the pool for a swim that make summer quite enjoyable. Mrs. Cool Chris (the teacher) is also off for a couple months so home all the time, which is (usually) nice.

But yeah, Fall/Spring, then Winter, then Summer.

I've heard the PNW is awesome in the summer. The midwest sucks enough as it is, but in the summer it's just miserable. And I just can't wait to enjoy all 2 weeks of absolutely perfect weather in the fall before it gets cold! :(

I've heard the PNW is awesome in the summer.

When I do love about this area is that it never gets too hot, and it never gets too cold. Though it can be quite amusing to see news reports in the summer "HEAT WAVE HITTING SEATTLE THIS WEEKEND TEMPS TO GET AS HIGH AS 90" and then everyone rushes out to by fans or AC units. Same thing happens in winter, we get 2" of snow and the lead story on the nightly news is "BLIZZARD CONDITIONS HIT THE PNW" and then we can't figure out to plow the roads so it all becomes a cluster-f. Then after it's over the city leaders come out and say "We weren't prepared for this storm, but we learned some things and will be better prepared for the next storm" which won't happen till the following year at which point the cycle begins again.

Man. Friend of mine just moved to the mountains in Oregon or Washington, I think, from here in central Illinois. Your part of the country might be my favorite, other than your apparent inability to drive in a little bit of snow  :lol

Despite political issues I will keep to myself, and the sheer volume of people in the Seattle metropolitan area, it truly is a great place to live and I wouldn't live anywhere else - admitting I haven't been to many parts of the country.

Yes, driving in the snow is treacherous here, but that is because 1) we might get a significant snow fall once a year, so it isn't something we get a lot of practice doing 2) the topography can vary significantly, and 3) there is never a good response from local govts on how to address the roads. Even the first major rain fall of autumn people seem to drive 20 MPH slower than normal like they've never seen water fall from the sky before.

Summer is way better than winter.

The A/C in your car gets cold way faster in the summer than the heat gets warm in the winter.

When you walk inside from the heat, that burst of cool air inside feels so awesome.  When you walk inside from the cold, you still feel cold as heck for at least a few minutes.

Girls wears less clothing in summer.

Hot weather; cold beer
Campfires and s'mores
More BBQ'g (grilling for you yanks)
Sunshine - you can't shovel it
Lazy afternoon drive with the windows down, and breeze through your hair (or so I would imagine)
Bikini's (though, sometime's that's not a good thing)
Scantily clad ladies, with tight clothes
Drive-Ins
The smell of rain on a hot day
No wind-chill factor

Ya'll have only made me hate summer more. And I can find girls in bikinis 24/7 thanks to the Magic Power of the Internet  :loser:

Driving with the windows down is for autumn, when the wind is actually cool and you could opt for a jacket (or no jacket) and everything's feelin' just fine. Fuck yeah fall. Fall could beat up summer any day of the week. I can prove it in MS Paint.

In all seriousness, one thing that I will always cherish about summer is the family vacations that my family took when I was a kid. My parents always planned a very nice trip each year. Trips that have stuck with me.

We have tried to do the same for my kids. Since I started flying again 5 years ago, we've brought them on some pretty cool trips.

But summer sucks!  :tdwn I'm legitimately not very happy in summer. The only season I'm genuinely 'happy' (and content with the weather, too) is autumn. Summer is me at my worst.

I've never had a family vacation or anything, so I don't really know much about summer trips. Canoeing and swimming down rivers is really fun if you're near them but I don't like day long commitments in the summer heat like that very much.

Growing up in Florida summer never bothered me because my life was summer. I lived on the beach so I was either swimming there or at a pool.

Now that I live in NC and there is no such thing as a sea breeze I feel like I'm suffocating under a moist blanket 3 months of the year. The heat is way worse here. I can't wait for fall.

well... to the first paragraph, are you saying the weather makes you so unhappy that your life is unhappy, unless it's fall?  Or that there's some other reason you're only happy during the fall, and it just so happens that you like the weather during that time best too?  Because all that sounds somewhat serious.  Or, are you exaggerating a bit and you do hate summer weather, but in reality it's not that serious?  If it's the former, according to the mayoclinic.com, seasonal affective disorder can happen to some people in spring and summer, so maybe it's something like that.

If it's the latter, I dunno.  I've never liked winter much and hate being cold, but a few years ago decided to try to embrace it or find things to enjoy about it, and maybe you could do the same in reverse.  Swimming is also fun in lakes and pools, not just rivers, and you can find ways to stay cool(er). :)

There's things to enjoy in every season, and every season lasts long enough that you appreciate the change when it comes. The winter just gone was fairly quiet here, then March 1st-2nd were some of the coldest days I can remember for a long long time, and we had another significant spell of snowfall in the middle of the month, to the point where I didn't see a loaf of bread available to buy for over a week. It probably took until mid-April before it really started feeling like spring.

I'm pretty sure it's just SAD although I've never had it formally diagnosed. As an introvert I already become exhausted after like 2 hours in a social setting, but in the warm seasons, forget it, I barely want to do anything. However in autumn, my mood completely changes: cool weather, colorful trees, dark rainy days. I h a t e bright sunny weather with a passion, it makes me miserable, but cloudy, dark days make me very happy. In autumn I'm far more likely to participate in social events, stay out longer than normal, be sociable and meet new people. Hell I've only ever forged relationships with women in the fall, it's that drastic a change on my personality. The absolute best part of the year is that 2-3 week period in October with the changing leaves and crisp breeze and mildly warm sunshine. You know, when the weather has finally decided to back off and let me wear a hoodie and drink a beer on the porch without sweating. :)

Love Seattle and it's weather! As for drivers, talk to anyone who lives in or crosses the Cascades frequently and they'll be some of the best drivers in snow on the planet.

Also, Seattle is the only major city besides maybe San Diego that doesn't need a weatherman.

In Seattle when you look outside and can't see Mt. Rainier it means it's raining. And if you can see Mt. Rainier, it's gonna rain.

S.A.D. blows.  mrs.jingle suffers from it, and by the end of winter (Feb/Mar) some things are intolerable with her 'cabin fever'.  She's an outdoorsy person, but not for cold weather stuff.

Sorry to hear you've got it Katt... though I must say I've never heard of someone with summer S.A.D. ... usually the lack of sunshine/daylight (and resulting vitamin D deficiencies) that contribute a lot to S.A.D.

Crank your AC, turn on the Snow Channel is all I can recommend.

I have a couple coworkers who were diagnosis with SAD and one of them has said that just working with a therapist improved things for her dramatically.  Maybe that's something to consider.  However, if that's what it is, you'll probably never switch to summer being your favorite season, and that's OK.  A lot of people prefer fall or spring, and some crazy ones even like winter best. ;)  Don't feel like you "should" just love summer (despite my initial reply :)), and there's also nothing wrong with being an introvert either.  It's just that if you're unhappy with aspects of being an introvert or with how things are going in the summer, then maybe talking to someone about it would help you to break patterns and come up with alternatives and feel a little better overall.

Oh no, Lethean, it's mostly just the weather that affects my mood. If I had it my way it'd be mid-October year-round, all day every day, never a sunny day, always overcast and cool. And I love being an introvert. I've had weekends where I come home from work on Friday and don't say a word (literally, speaking) to anyone until Monday. It's great. But also, my job for the last 10 years has been a physically demanding one, so my gripes with summer are exponentially amplified come June as a result. So that's a big factor. Summer is far and away my favorite season. I’m just so much happier and more comfortable in the heat than I am in the cold. If the temperature drops below 55, I’m completely miserable and can barely function. No matter how hot it is though, I can function normally even if it is uncomfortably hot, and the extended hours of sunlight help to lift my spirits.

Good things about summer:

- Festivals and outdoor concerts
- More hours of sunlight for trips and travels
- Girls scarcely dressed

Bad things about summer:

Literally everything else

Autumn is best. Best colors, best combination of hot and cool, nice atmosphere.

Minnesota summers can be incredibly uncomfortable, I hate them. 4th of July is looking to be in the nineties and humid. A few months ago, it was 100 degrees colder. We get it all here, yet Winter is my second favorite month.

Anyways, I don't think I'll be able to change your mind with my reasons, but here a few of mine, even though I hate this time of year, I do have a few reasons to like it:

1) I love washing my truck in the driveway in the summer and detailing the inside and out. I love doing that sort of thing. Just me and some music getting my vehicle looking nice.

2) I get off work around 7 PM every day and drive home as the sun is setting, heat is going down. Driving down the highway, with the sun setting, cooler temps, windows down, for some reason it makes the music sound better. I can't put my finger on it, it just does.

3) I enjoy having my morning coffee on the deck. I do this in early fall too, but summer is great for it too.

4) Northern Minnesota (Duluth, Grand Marais, Two Harbors, Boundary Water, etc) is incredibly beautiful during this time of year. Nothing better than sitting on Lake Superior's shore with a beer, watching ships come into harbor.

5) The smell of freshly cut lawn and the smell of BBQs

6) The transition of summer into fall. Nights getting colder and days getting shorter. I love the transition of BBQ smell to bonfire smell in the cold autumn air.

Well, if it affects your mood *that* much, there might be things you could do to mitigate it, that's all.

You did say you like mildly warm sunshine, so you can't entirely hate sunny days. :)  Anyway; I used to do the same thing (not speaking for the weekend) pre-relationship.  I have kind of forced myself to be at least a little more outgoing at shows however; I go to quite a few alone and sometimes I'll go the whole night w/out speaking to anyone, but it's also nice to talk about the show, especially if it was a really good one, and I may chat with people before or after.

I like sunshine when I can't see the sun. When it's not hovering right over me in the sky. So in the fall when the sun hangs low, I love it. Something about the low winter sun is way nicer than the summer sun, too. Maybe because it's not oppressively hot :)

I can see why some people love summer so much. Outdoors activities, cleaning the car, rolling the windows down on the road, all that good stuff. The heat ruins all that stuff for me though, so anything that can be done in the fall is usually way more appealing to me.

But it's okay, in a few months it'll be hoodie season, rustling leaves will replace the sound of lawn mowers, cold breezes will replace muggy wind, and Octoberfest will be back on shelves

I really love snow, but that’s the only thing to ever love about winter.   Winter sucks.  Cold sucks.  Dark sucks.   I hate going to work when its dark, and then coming home....and its dark.  At least if it snows, there’s something to be happy about.   But without 4-6 inches of snow, winter can jump up Roseanne’s rear end.

I also love heat, and don’t mind the 90s at all.    If we start getting into the high 90s and almost 100...then I start to be kinda done.   But upper 80s and lower 90s is my jam.

I love where I live.   (Except for when its about Nov-Feb)

It never gets that cold or snowy here though. (Jammindude and I live in the same area) That's why I love it here. Never too hot (with rare exceptions), never too cold. Too much rain can suck balls, but that isn't rain's fault. It is the crappy drainage in my back yard.

Hard to deny the lameness of summer at the moment. It's hot, and half the bay area is on fire right now (as usually happens in summer these days) so the air quality is shit and everything is covered in ash. Makes for a cool sunset though  :yeahright

I live in Minnesota where half the winter it's sub-zero and literally dangerous to be outside for too long. I think that's worse than mosquitoes and humidity in the summer. As much as I hate heat above the low 80's, I am much more willing to suck it up and be outside in the summer when it's too hot and humid than I am in the winter when it's cold as balls outside. And I'm all around a happier person when I spend time outside.

Late summer and early fall are the best in Minnesota, September/October. If you could bottle that shit up, I'd live in that year round.

I love dry L.A. heat, the hotter the better for me.  Anything under 70 and I'm cold.  Yesterday was the first morning in weeks I didn't wake up to overcast and fog.  Should be around 100 tomorrow :metal  I drive around with the windows down in it.  I don't mind a little sweat.

I love summer.  Heat, sunshine, baseball, less traffic (no school).

Tomorrow is going to be shitty.  You can have it.  I went to game 1 of the World Series last year.  It was something like 103 at first pitch.  For ANY game other than a World Series game I wouldn't have gone.  It was miserably hot.  Yuck.

When we went to Dodger Stadium a couple of years ago, we fucking baked in the sun. It was so hot.

I won't even go to day games anymore.  Sitting in the sun in the middle of a crowd is terrible.  I remember going to a Sunday afternoon game at Anaheim Stadium years ago, and 90% of the people in the front of our section migrated to the back rows in order to get under the cover of the overhang from the section above.

By comparison, I went to a Denver Broncos game about 10 year ago the week after Christmas.  The game started at 2:15 p.m. local time, and the temperature at kickoff was in the mid-30s (it was quite a bit colder by the end of the game when the sun had gone down).  It was COLD, but it was so much better than baking in the sun (especially since the Broncos won).

Dodgers are playing the Angels in Anaheim this weekend, which would normally be appealing to me, but not a chance with this weather  Fortunately, the worst of the heat only shows up a couple weeks out of the year.

It's only 82 degrees where I am. Yet I have the AC running!

I should hope so!  We set ours to come on at 76 during the day and turn it down to 72 when we go to bed.

Good things about summer:

- Festivals and outdoor concerts
- More hours of sunlight for trips and travels
- Girls scarcely dressed

Bad things about summer:

Literally everything else

Autumn is best. Best colors, best combination of hot and cool, nice atmosphere.

Agree 100%.  Love that first nice day in spring where all the girls all of the sudden come out it seems  :lol  But really, the summer is best for all the concerts, but the heat is just too much for me.  Fall is the best, it's cooler and you get the feel of the change of seasons and all that brings with nature.  I still think winter is my least favorite though.  I can't stand snow and all the annoyance it brings, and the fact people just aren't as happy that season it seems.

Fall > Spring > Summer > Winter

To be fair, one of the redeeming qualities for summer is that I can use rental bikes to get to the railway station and back from it each working day. Of course, that also applies to spring and autumn, so there's that.

But Summer is unique in that it presents endless opportunities to give courtesy clerks a much-needed workout in the warm summer sun chasing down shopping carts at the farthest, remote reaches of parking lots.

I used to love summer when I was a student and I would get time off from school, but now it's my least favorite season of the year. The humidity in NJ always makes my asthma act up, the bugs are a huge pain in the ass and the extra traffic sucks too. I guess it really depends on where you live though. I've never been a fan of the heat so obviously I'd be a lot happier in the summer in a different area. My dream is to move to Colorado one day...

The projected high temperatures in Denver over the next week are 88, 95, 97, 94, 97, 92 and 87 (with humidity in excess of 70%).

Interesting, though, that you mentioned "extra traffic."  In Southern California, summer traffic is typically lighter, making it about the only thing I like about summer.  I used to commute on the 405 sought of the 10, and the absolute worst time of the year was in September and October -- right around when schools (UCLA in particular) are in full swing.

I know it can get hot in Denver and other parts of Colorado in the summer, but the weather year round is still generally more to my liking than it is in NJ. Weather is not the only reason why I want to move there one day though, I love the state for several reasons.

Also, what I meant by "extra traffic" is that I live in Southern NJ near many beaches, so the area gets significantly more congested with people from the Northern NJ, New York, etc. driving down here in the summer for vacation and to their beach houses. It's just one more reason why I never look forward to the summer down here. I really enjoy winter and fall down here though because it's a lot quieter, so if I do eventually move from here one day I'm sure I'll miss that.

I took my son to Phoenix last August for a Dodgers @ Diamondbacks game.  We rented a car and drove, and I can recall seeing the outside temperature rising as we got closer to Phoenix.  It was somewhere in the 112-116 range by the time we got there, and I remember getting out of the car at the hotel.  It was the most awful feeling, and it was not the "dry heat" that Phoenix is known for.  We took a Lyft to the game, and I remember breaking out in a sweat just walking from the car to the stadium entrance.  Between that kind of crap and scorpions, you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

My wife and I did a Phoenix/Scottsdale/Sedona trip in July 1998. We also went to a Diamondbacks game (inaugural season). We made plans to rent a convertible. Sounded like a great idea. We weren't even on the highway yet and we had to pull over and put the top up. In fact, we went to see Iron Maiden in Phoenix and driving back to Scottsdale after 11:00pm it was still too hot to put the top down.

It was 116 the day we came home.

Dad grew up about 90 miles east of Phoenix. He met his future wife (my mom) in Tacoma, where my mom grew up. At some point they drove down to AZ in the summer in a car with no AC. My mom's first trip there. She thought they were slowly descending in to hell. Ultimately my dad decided he liked it up here and this is where they settled.

July 2015.

We flew in and out of Las Vegas, did the Grand Canyon, and Disneyland. Spent a day in LA (Hollywood and a Dodger game).

When we left Disney to head back to Vegas, I wanted to see the Pacific. We asked someone there and they said that Huntington Beach was the closest beach so we went there. Dipped our feet in the Pacific and had lunch there. Very cool place.

My wife and I each grew up in houses where you could see the Atlantic.

Roughly 9 miles northwest of where your picture was taken.

Seal Beach is the less crowded, more laid back version of HB.  South side of either pier was the place to be if you were a 1980s metalhead.  Every third person had a ghetto blaster going with some Van Halen, Scorpions, Maiden, Crue, etc.

Yup.  Under the circumstances, Newport would have made more sense since there's freeway access, but for your purposes, the differences wouldn't have mattered.

It's probably my favorite of the 7 parks I've been to.  I mean, well, it's hard to top the Grand Canyon in terms of wow, but something about walking the forest with those huge trees that really makes you feel small and "down to earth"  I wish we spent more than a day there and got to do some serious trails.  Was probably my favorite day of our 7 day trip along the north west last year.

Staying in Windsor up in Wine Country

It has been a few years since I have been there, so I do not know how Windsor was impacted by the fires last year.  You might want to check on that.  Assuming all is well, I highly recommend visiting the following:
-Powell's Sweet Shoppe on McClelland Drive.  Yeah, it's just a candy store.  But it is such a trip down memory lane.  The place is filled to the brim with all the candy's that were around in the '70s that you can't find anymore.  They also have all kinds of cool memorabilia from back then.  And a giant screen TV that loops Charlie and the Chocolate Factor continuously.
-Two doors down from Powell's is what I consider a MUST VISIT restaurant called Kin.  Everything I have had there is spectacular.  https://www.kinwindsor.com/menu/  I highly recommend the wedge salad, roasted pear & brie, KIN mac & cheese, and the lobster risotto.  But like I said, it's all good.

Cram, you are the man. That tree takes a picture with you!

Hot weather; cold beer
Campfires and s'mores
More BBQ'g (grilling for you yanks)
Sunshine - you can't shovel it
Lazy afternoon drive with the windows down, and breeze through your hair (or so I would imagine)
Bikini's (though, sometime's that's not a good thing)
Scantily clad ladies, with tight clothes
Drive-Ins
The smell of rain on a hot day
No wind-chill factor
Yeah most of the above is year round in AZ. Some of the rest is October-April in AZ. Granted, not a lot of swimming Nov-Feb.

Well let's see, 2 days ago they forecasted 116 in Phx today.  Looks like it's only gonna make it to 112.  Must be a cold front moving in.  :lol :rollin :lol

I woke up at 430 to run before the sun comes up and it was 90degrees already....

Well, it's only hot 3 months out of the year.  My parents used to travel during the summer months.  They said there are many other places in the U.S. that are more brutal in the summer than Arizona just because of humidity.  Even when it is humid here, it's considerably less than most other places.  I've lived here since 85' and only been stung by a scorpion once 2 years ago.  Beats the hell out of Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and tornados.

My friend told me it's been 85-90 in Sweden recently, and of course they have no A/C.  Global warming at work.

Europe is going thru some brutal shit.  England in the mid/high 20s (Celsuis... you know, what 95% of the world uses  :P).  My teammate in Paris said it was 33C there on Friday.  And yeah... most don't have AC at home.

Climate change is a hoax though.   ::)

I just want to say that summer here has rocked for the past several days in a row. Right now it's 64ºF. Very light rain. High of 74 today. Summer shouldn't get hotter than that.  :lol

The Netherlands reached its warmest night in history last week at around 28-29 degrees I believe. Concrete floors are breaking up near my house (pic below) and probably at more locations throughout the country due to the heat, subway a/c's are not working because they aren't able to handle this heat, and harvest is going to shit which may affect the economy pretty badly. Weird times man.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  Gotta wonder what your definition of "hot" is.  The average high in Phoenix from April through October (seven months) is over 85.  That's "hot" in my book.  In only two months is the average high under 70.  Not for me.

No wonder there's no chicks on DTF.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

Anyhoo - I'm in the heart of Texas and I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree that summer can take a long walk off of a short plank.

LOL!!  85 is warm, not hot.  I'm talking about 100-105+, and that really isn't too hot compared to 115+.  I'll take 85 all year long and if it stayed at 105 all summer, that would be a blessing.
