For us old farts it's album cuts that were never played on the radio.

So for instance Dream Theater, apart from Pull Me Under, is all deep cuts?

The first cut is the deepest.  Ergo Cat Stevens is the only logical answer.  Rod Stewart would also be acceptable.

No, Take the Time and Surrounded were on the radio and on MTV so the other songs are deep Cuts.

Also, shame on you Chad.  You shame all Canadians.  Deep Cuts The Knife.

For bands that aren't on the radio. I'd argue they are songs that aren't setlist staples.

Ah yes, one of those threads where we spend the first couple of pages debating and defining exactly what, in this instance, a "deep cut" is, before actually coming up with suggestions.

I suggest you post some "Deep Cuts" then.

So all the bands in history who never played on the radio are all "deep cuts"?

It's an old school term used in the day.  Today, radio is dead so it doesn't work anymore.

It's the nine minute song on side 2 that casual fans don't really care for.

And with that definition I'm going with Rush.

Maybe you should've spent better money on that radio, and it would've lasted longer.   :lol

Back in the day, there were the radio hits. Whether they were bonafide hits or album cuts played on the radio.  those other songs on the albums were known as "Deep Cuts".

Internet radio that we prog nerds listen to play all album songs so that term "Deep Cuts" doesn't apply no more.

I'm never starting a post on the correct way to tie a tie.  You folks would turn it into a third dimensional, thesis on the values of Four hand knot and it's effect on society. The Half Windsor and it's effect on social statuses.  Nicky Knot.  Can Nicky Spanjaards actually tie a knot in F#. :lol

Rush had one song make the top 40 in the States (New World Man).

That means every other Rush song is a "deep cut."

Therefore, the answer is Rush.

2nd place goes to Wham!

I guess the answer for me would have to be Iron Maiden since their non singles are the better songs.  I mean really, I think at the end of the day the answer is likely your favorite band.

#21 was it's highest position on the charts.  the B-side of that 45?  Vital Signs live left off of Exit Stage Left.

Well, I think I qualify as an old fart here, and that's not really how I define it. I don't think it's as clear cut as songs that weren't singles. I think it has more to do with songs that wouldn't be considered as singles. Songs that don't fit the prevailing style of the album or that are too long for radio/MTV play. I generally only think a song or two from an album qualify, and they're generally towards the end. Since Maiden is cited as an example, To Tame a Land is a fine example, as would be TLotLDR. Could this be Magic and Words in a Simple Rhyme are not singles material.

A definition I see that would jibe with the description is a song that's not as accessible than the others.

Also, since albums aren't really a thing anymore, I'd say that the term really has no current use. Anybody can listen to any song they like now.

Bingo! You old farts should accept that as a definition that can coexist with 'didn't get radio play.' :)

Well El Barto you are one of a kind so....

Also, definitions change or have other meanings in different eras.

Indeed. Almost every song from every Maiden album that was never or rarely played live qualifies as a good deep cut. From Strange World to Isle of Avalon.

Some choices I came up with Metallica. Nearly every song if not every song from the 80's is loved. Then in the 90's you have gems like Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Fixxxer, etc.
Black Sabbath, especially the Ozzy era you have the dig past the radio hits to get to the best stuff. Then Dio era. At this point the entire era is a deep cut lol.
Priest/Maiden. both good examples of course.

Pappy mentioned Priest; that's another good choice.   Stained Class is one of my favorite albums by them, and the only song that ever gets any real press is "Beyond The Realms of Death", but honestly, side one of that album is all killer no filler to me.  Same with Point of Entry, another album I hold in very high regard but hate the single, "Hot Rockin'".

Oh, I got another:  Twisted Sister.    We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock might be my two least favorite TS songs ever, but Stay Hungry is a very good record.

I define Deep cuts as something casual fans may not know. Let's take ozzy for example. Blizzard, Diary and No more Tears are pretty much his biggest and most successful albums. Songs from them that don't get played on the radio are usually at least known of by the casual fan because the albums get talked about a lot.

The same type of people may not have heard Old LA tonight or even know what album it's on. so I would call it a deep cut.
