I bought a Moto Z2 Force about 6 months ago, and recently decided to put a card in it so that I can listen to music at work. I've got an old ipod that I've been relying on for many years, but it's only 120 gigs, and the battery is to the point that it hardly keeps a charge at this point. I put a 256 gig card in my phone today, and I'm using flac for the file type.
I downloaded vlc player, but I don't really like it so far. I might get used to it after using it for awhile, but it seems like a huge pain in the ass. I've also tried the play music app that came pre-loaded on my phone, and it seems to suit me a little bit better, but I'd like to get some opinions about various apps that are available.
On a side note, I'm using a pair of Marshall studio monitor headphones to listen to music, so sound quality is definitely a priority.
-
I'm using PowerAmp on my Android phone, and in general I think it's excellent. Gapless playback isn't perfect, but it's better than a bunch of other apps I tried, and in pretty much all other regards it works really well for me.
-
I mostly just use Spotify, but for local audio files I use BlackPlayer EX.
-
Apple user here, so I just suffer thru iTunes and Spotify. Both have pros and cons when compared to one another, but neither are great.
-
Another satisfied PowerAmp user here.

PlayerPro.
Poweramp doesn't read all of my MP3 tags and filters hundreds of albums into unknown artist folders. I don't feel like adjusting hundreds of albums, so I use PlayerPro, which works fine for me. I recall really liking PowerAmp before having that problem several years ago.
-
I just use Spotify and occasionally Play Music on my phone (Galaxy S7) but I'm not that particular when it comes to mobile listening
-
I was trying to find one a month or so ago. I should have asked here.
Tried a couple, settled on JetAudio (free version). Does what I need it to, I like the interface. No complaints.
-
Used Foobar for the longest time, but recently switched to Google Play Music when I realized I was getting free streaming with YouTube Red.

Marillion.

Oh. I don't play Marillion with my phone. Or ever.
Actually I like Script.

Literally no one in this thread is shocked at this statement.

Google Play Music can store 50K songs for free. That's what I need, ripping my CD's to it.
-
I subscribe to Google Play Music. It's my go-to.
-
I use Google Play Music. I have a 128 GB SD Card filled with 128 kbps mp3 files (for lack of space). It is full and it has over 25 thousand songs. I will probably need a 256 GB SD card soon.

The sun is hot, water is wet and certain things remain constant in the universe... :lol

128K? My sympathies.
-
I bought Neutron and think it is great.
Great sound and lot"s of possibilities to tweak it just the way you want.
The UI could be better but given the sound quality I don't care.

It's the only way it will fit. I only listen to it underway or at the gym, so it is not so important. At home everything is lossless. ;D

When do you ever need 25 THOUSAND songs all at the same time though?
I use Spotify and iTunes on my phone and use both those mediums to play music at home. In the car it's all CDs

I don't stream music at all (don't want to pay for a large data plan based on how much I listen to music on my phone. I had a 64gb micro SD card, which kept about half of my collection. It became a pain in the ass to swap albums on and off of my phone depending on whatever mood I was into (i.e. let's listen to EVERY _____ (Maiden, DT, etc.) album this week, when I normally only kept my favorite handful of their albums on the card).
So I upgraded to 128gb and then 256gb so I could keep my entire collection, plus have room for lots of pictures and videos. Having my full music collection is convenient, since I can just pull up whatever album I want to hear on a whim and not have to worry about whether or not it's already on the card.
-
^ Exactly this for me too.

Well, I could ask you "when do you ever need the infinity of songs you can choose on Spotify and iTunes?" Simple. You feel like listening to something, you search for it on Spotify and you listen to it. It is available whenever you want. The only difference is that I prefer having it on my phone. I've never used Spotify (or similar) and will never use it.
And yea.. pretty much this:

Actually, the trend seems to be heading toward streaming than uploading. Amazon is doing away with the uploading service and is now doing streaming only, which sucks for those who have rare CD's. I hope GPM doesn't follow. I don't want to pay a subscription fee.
-
I use the Apple Music subscription. Works well enough for me, I’m not nearly the audiophile that a lot of you guys are. I have iTunes but haven’t used it in ages.
-
iTunes or VLC on my pc.
though I finally upgraded my cans to a set of PSB (wired) headphones
fuuuuuuuuuuck.
they're pretty slick
-
It's Spotify and iTunes... I'm a simple man.
-
I'm with the GPM group here, being able to stream King Crismon and Transatlantic when at work is fantastic. The cell phone app is pretty simple to use and has a decent sound quality.
-
Spotify for the most part.
-
Used to use PowerAmp but got a free month's trial for Google Play a couple of years ago and haven't looked back since. Think I've bought a total of 3 CDs since then...
-
I use PlayerPro on Android. Best $5 I've ever spent.

Itunes, but not streaming. I like the idea of streaming but my understanding is with any streaming comes larger data usage on your phone bill? We have a lower tier Unlimited data plan with Verizon so I'm not sure how streaming music works with a crappier signal., I've been Itunes from almost the beginning with all my CD's loaded in. Also my computers and phones are Apple, which makes everything seemless.

While that is true, streaming services also let you have offline files. You can download any album you want to listen to while on wi-fi and then listening to it without consuming data. Obviously if you already have everything set up with Itunes it doesn't make alot of sense for you to change, but the option is there.

I'm intrigued about this. Will have to give it a try. I love PowerAmp on the android phone, it can be customized a lot and plays the same mp3 file with a lot more dynamics than Google music player when I compared. I use in-ear monitors Shure SE215 and poweramp sounds really good with them.
On the iphone I use Marvis, not so much for sound but to customize my display, I don't like the layout of the apple music player.

Thanks for that! Good info for around the house. I listen more in the car than anywhere else. So I think I'm still a bit stuck.

For the best sound on Android try Neutron Music Player...

I use Google Play Music, and used to use PowerAmp for my files located on my phone. Now I just use Google Play Music or the default music player for the rare instances I want to listen to local files.
I absolutely love Google Play Music... and It's sweet that even though I only get 4gb of data per month, I am on T Mobile, meaning music streaming doesn't count towards my data! :JayOctavarium:
I will say I wish the interface was a bit.. better though.

I use itunes on my PC and VLC for FLAC files. On my android phone I use Rocket Player (it's the only player I know that syncs with itunes).
I use itunes because I need the playcounts, skipcounts, ratings, etc in order to make playlists and manage my library, so I need a music player that syncs with itunes.

Well, I've been using VLC for a week now. I'm getting used to it, but a couple of things are bothering me. The biggest problem is that a lot of the music I listen to has songs that run into the next track, and VLC puts a small space between all of them.
For example, I was listening to Good Apollo IV from Coheed and Cambria tonight at work. A great deal of the album runs together with no space between the songs, but the player seems to pause very briefly between each track. I decided to try something else to see if it was just a problem with that particular album's files. So I put in Pale Communion from Opeth, and it did it between Voice of Treason and Faith in Others, as well. It just seems very jarring to have that small gap between each track.
Another issue is that whenever I have to pause in the middle of a song, it will sometimes stutter once I resume the playback. Granted, it's not often that I have to pause in the middle of a song, but it's still irritating when it happens.
The search continues...

Another Google Play Music user here. I've been using it for 2.5 years or so. Back then I searched for a streaming music service that would allow me to download my entire music collection to my phone so I wouldn't need to stream all the time. At the time between Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play, Google was the only one that allowed me to do this. It's possible the others do now, but there's no sense in switching now.
I hear now that Google Play Music will be phased out once YouTube's new streaming service launches at some point. Hopefully it's more of just a rebranding and everything moves over seamlessly.
-
I've found a player that fits my needs. Foobar2000.
I used it at work this past evening, and I couldn't be happier. The interface is fairly bland looking, but it's very easy to use. It sounds great, and the playback is gapless. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for an app.
-
am I the only one here that uses Tidal? It's a hhi-fidelity music streaming service
Very noticeable difference when listening on my bower and wilkins speakers or even just my free apple earbuds.
-
PowerAmp gets the job done, been using it for years.

Let's start here: the cup, on the end of your string. What kind is it?

No no, what he is saying is while at home connected to your wi-fi, you can download the albums through the streaming service, the downloaded albums would then be accessible to you offline, so you would still be able to listen to in in the car without consuming data. :tup

Spotify Player and PowerAmp for offline. Although I can't remember last time I listened to music and didn't use Spotify. Even though I don't have premium account I have more free GBs per month now so I can stream and not fear to pay more for my mobile subscription.

So, I have a 160GB iPod Classic, and I'm almost at capacity. I just upgraded my phone from an iPhone 2 to an 8, with 264GB. I'm hoping to load most if not all of my music on there, but as I think about it... I'm also burning my CDs - losslessly - to a NAS. Is there an easy way to "stream" to my phone the music from my home network NAS?
I'm also bugged by the fact that the iPhone now does not have a headphone jack. I have a nice set of Klipsch headphones that I now can't use. :(

I'm sure Apple has a headphone converter for $150 that can help you 😉
