3 metal classics from 1988.
Pick one.
-
Damn!!
-
Operation Mindcrime for sure!
-
Team Maiden since forever, going with Seventh Son. Mindcrime of course is still an absolutely mindblowing and amazing album. Justice drags in bits and pieces and therefore loses to those two other records.
-
Seventh son. Justice is a good album but not as good. Never really liked Queensryche and
-
Mindcrime by a pretty wide margin. It's a classic that has held well up over the past 30 years.
SSoaSS has one stellar song (the title track), two solid songs (Moonchild and Madness) and five songs that are mostly forgettable.
AJFA is one of the worst mixed albums ever, so it already starts out with a negative. Blackened and Dyer's Eve are great songs. I liked a few of the others at the time, but they haven't aged well for me.
Side note: I love that I can just type "ssoass" and "ajfa" into Wikipedia and have the entries for these albums come up!
-
According to The TAC Top 50:
Seventh Son-15
Justice-28
Mindcrime-33
-
Mindcrime is my favorite album of all time, so this is a no-brainer. But Justice is in my top-five, so it was close!
-
Seventh Son and Mindcrime are fantastic albums. Justice is not. And I gotta side with Seventh over Mindcrime.
-
Maiden wins this for me.
-
Tough one.
Was between Maiden and Metallica.
Went with Seventh Son.
-
Mindcrime, though I listen to the other two records more often.
-
I'll be in what I assume will be the minority on this forum and vote for Metallica.
-
Mindcrime. AJFA is great too, but Mindcrime changed music for me. And I don't care for Seventh Son at all, so...
-
SSoaSS has one stellar song (the title track), two solid songs (Moonchild and Madness) and five songs that are mostly forgettable.
Whaaat? the easy sounding, almost poppish Can I Play with Madness (btw, I love the song) better than Infinite Dreams, The Evil that Men Do or The Clairvoyant?
-
Mindcrime > SS > Justice
It was very close between Seventh son and mindcrime though
-
Mindcrime
Seventh Son
Justice
-
For me it's easy: AJFA is one of my favorite albums ever. I like Iron Maiden and I don't care at all for Queensr˙che (I guess I just don't get them).
-
I voted O:M, but I felt somewhat guilty because SSoASS is my favorite Maiden album and I like Maiden even more than Queensr˙che. Strange...
-
Fates Warning - No Exit :metal
-
Seventh Son.

"Solid" is not exactly a big compliment. Jimmy Bain was a "solid" bass player. As far as the other songs go, Infinite Dreams is what would have happened if a lounge singer joined Maiden. The Clairvoyant was the song that told me Maiden had basically tapped out on new, fresh ideas, and the chorus is just silly. The Evil That Men Do is probably the best of the three you mentioned, and maybe a notch below Madness. SSoaSS just fell flat and was completely overshadowed when by Mindcrime came out three weeks later. If the title track is a 10, Moonchild is a 6, Madness a 5, Evil a 4, and everything else a 3 or worse.
-
Fates Warning - No Exit :metal
No Exit versus Mindcrime would be almost too close to call! I think I'd probably still pick Mindcrime by a hair, but O:M > No Exit >>> AJFA > SSoaSS
-

Gotta say I’ve never seen ID or TC described this way. ID is a Top 20 song for me.

Operation Mindcrime for sure!
-
And Justice For All by a mile, though I like the other 2 also.
-
As joint greatest album ever with Images and Words, Mindcrime by a mile. And then some.
-
SSOASS (10/10)
Operation: Mindcrime (10/10)
...And Justice for All (7/10)
-
Justice easily.
-
SSoaSS
but this was a good poll, tough choices.
-
Justice. Not SO easily, but it's one of my favorite Metallica albums. In the end I'm a die hard Metallica fan, not a HUGE Maiden or Queensryche fan, though I do love those two albums.
-
Damn!!
My thoughts exactly.
Went with Mindcrime.
Mindcrime
Justice
Seventh Son
-
I voted Mindcrime but I'll admit it's the only one of these three that I have listened to from start to finish.
-
OM will just edge Seventh Son IMO.
-
Love all three of those but going with Mindcrime.
-
1. OM
2. AJFA
3. 7th Son
-
Keeper of the seven keys part 2
:hat
-
Seventh Son, Mindcrime is a great album but I always though it's predecessor Rage For Order was far more progressive and a better album.
-
Mindcrime is my favourite album of all time so the vote's a no-brainer for me :metal
However, the other two are also great albums. AJFA is my favourite Metallica album and whilst SSoaSS isn't my favourite Maiden album I do think it's their best sounding and has several excellent tracks.
-
ChuckSteak you're my hero. Voivod is in my top 5 bands.
As for the poll, AJFA.
Coincidently, I saw Queensryche open for Metallica on the Justice tour at Maple Leaf Gardens.
Thought it was an odd pairing.
-
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. It was tight race between it and Justice but I think I like SS a bit more. O:M is great album as well but I'm not fan of the band at all.

:tup
Voivod rules the universe. :metal
-
1. SSOSS
2. Justice
3. Mindcrime
Love all 3 albums but I like Iron Maiden more than Metallica and Mindcrime is really the only Queensryche album I like.
-
...and Justice for All
-
Mindcrime, Seventh Son, then Justice. The concept in Mindcrime is just so strong and the pacing is great. Seventh Son just kind of trucks along after the first half and the production in Justice alone makes it incomparable with the other two.
-
Why the diss on Jimmy Bain? What did he do to you? He's at least better than Bob Daisley. :) :) :)
This is hard. MAIDEN is my band. So there's that. Mindcrime is almost the perfect album, and certainly one of the best prog metal concept albums ever. ...Justice is far and away my favorite of the pre-Black Metallica (and a top three Met album over all). Fuck.
I have to stay faithful to the poll, though. I guess that means Queensryche.
But:
Bandwise: Maiden>>Metallica>>Queensryche
Sentimental: Maiden>>Queensryche>>Metallica
Specific SONGS: Maiden>>Queensryche>> Metallica
Specific Album: Queensryche>>Maiden>>Metallica
Cover: Maiden>>Metallica>>Queensryche
B-Sides: Maiden
... no, can't do it. Maiden. Seventh Son.

So...I gave a listen to SSoaSS (up through the title track). I didn't give Moonchild enough credit. It's better than "solid" and more than one notch better than Madness - maybe a 7.5 or 8. I might also say that Infinite Dreams is Slightly better than Evil. But Mindcrime is still a better album overall.
-
Dickinson himself has said Queensryche made the better concept record with Mindcrime (in comparison to SSOASS).
-
Sentences that use "prog" with reference to Queensryche or Maiden make me want to hit my head against a wall.

Stop. Before. We go. Down the. what is prog hole. Again.

Yeah Sam, I've mentioned this before, but I know I read an interview not long after both albums came out where a member of Maiden, may have been Bruce, absolutely said it. Back then.

Yep!
Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden told Maiden leader Steve Harris that Operation: Mindcrime was better than Iron Maiden's concept record Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Harris disagreed, obviously). See https://teamrock.com/feature/2015-09-04/iron-maiden-album-by-album-in-their-own-words.

Steve Harris is quoted here ( https://www.loudersound.com/features/iron-maiden-album-by-album-in-their-own-words ) as saying that Bruce told him that O:M was the better concept album. While Steve's statement doesn't say WHEN Bruce told him this, the context seems to imply it happened shortly after both albums had been released.
-
Yes I remember reading it right after the albums were released.
-
Of course OM was a better concept album as in it was a pretty coherent story whereas SSoaSS was a borderline concept album.
-
X metal album vs. Mindcrime.
Mindcrime.
It's always Mindcrime.
-
X metal album wasn't a choice though.
-
The only album which has possibly toppled Mindcrime as my favourite album of all time is Images and Words so it's pretty easy for me to say Operation Mindcrime. Incredible music, performances and lyrics (which could have been pretty much written today), the perfect album. Not a big Metallica guy and not very familiar with that album other than I think it has the song One on it, which I do like. Seventh Son is a classic Maiden album and I love a lot of it but it is not on the same level as Mindcrime for me, very little is.
-
Justice
Seventh son is also 10/10, though. Mindcrime is great, too.
-
Keeper of the seven keys part 2
:hat
:hefdaddy
-
In the same year we got Seventh Son AND Mindcrime AND Justice AND Keeper II. What an absurdingly glorious year that was.
-
It's interesting to think that I was 4 years old in 1988 and all 3 albums impacted me 15+ years after they were released. I'm guessing they are still impacting people today.
-
X metal album vs. Mindcrime.
Mindcrime.
It's always Mindcrime.
Bless you, my son. -- Father William :lol
Re: KEEPER II -- I totally forgot that was 1988. Damn. That's four landmarks. And I am also a big fan of Living Colour's Vivid, so for me, FIVE. Christ. What a great year in music.
-
X metal album vs. Mindcrime.
Mindcrime.
It's always Mindcrime.
I wasn't aware that X ever did a metal album. Is it any good?
Re: KEEPER II -- I totally forgot that was 1988. Damn. That's four landmarks.
What an amazing album Keeper II is (although it does have a couple duds)! I was so excited when I saw that it had a song of comparable length to Halloween and even more excited when I heard the song and it lived up to my expectations. I have a friend who graduated high school in 1989, and she said that I Want Out was basically the senior class anthem.
For me, the top 5 1988 albums are
1. Mindcrime
2. No Exit
3. Justice
4. Keeper II
T5. SSoaSS and Ram It Down
After that, there's a BIG drop off.
-
According to The TAC Top 50:
Seventh Son-15
Justice-28
Mindcrime-33
Keepers Pt II came in at #4.
I love love love those 2 Keepers albums.
-
For real though, my opinion is actually Mindcrime > Seven Keys > Seventh Son > Justice
Also out of curiosity, I looked up what RYM's top 10 metal albums of '88 were (to see if there were any we forgot), & here are the results there:
#1. Metallica - ...& Justice For All
#2. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
#3. Slayer - South Of Heaven
#4. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
#5. Bathory - Blood Fire Death
#6. Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 2
#7. Death - Leprosy
#8. Voivod - Dimension Hatross
#9. Testament - The New Order
10. Riot - Thundersteel
(11. Crimson Glory - Transcendence)
I haven't heard any of these apart from the 4 mentioned above, but to anyone who has, are any of these worthy competitors too?
-
I actually had 5 albums from 1988 in my Top 50.
I rated Flotsam & Jetsam's No Place For Disgrace at 38.
Oh, and South Of Heaven is awesome!!
-
For epic metal fans, 1988 saw also Manowar's Kings of Metal and Virgin Steele's Age of Consent.
-
Oh, and South Of Heaven is awesome!!
I second that.
-
For me it's Justice. Mindcrime is terribly overrated in my opinion, and I've never been much of a Maiden fan.
-

Yes. Voivod - Dimension Hatröss is fantastic. For me it is so much better than anything Metallica or any thrash metal band has ever done.
Death - Leprosy and Bathory - Blood Fire Death are also excellent.
-
Mindcrime for sure. Classic album by a band in their prime.
AJFA is decent, has a few great songs, but the mix is horrible.
SSoaSS is meh for me, was losing interest in Maiden at the time it came out and never liked this album from the first listen.

+1 to Voivod. But the singer takes some getting used to. PLEASE give it a chance. That album is just freaking fantastic.
Death is one of the best death metal bands that ever existed....but you have to like death metal. Leprosy is considered a classic, I prefer the follow up Spiritual Healing....and most people around these parts prefer the "proggier" stuff that came later.
The most "normal metal" of the bunch is Testament. CRIMINALLY overlooked San Francisco thrash band. If I had my way, Testament and Forbidden would get the attention that is often showered on Exodus. New Order is a fantastic disc, but they don't really have a bad album that I can think of. Their most commercial was The Ritual....but later on, they even dabbled in death metal in an attempt to stay relevant. Their two most recent discs are really fantastic "return to form" albums. But New Order is a great example of a classic thrash band in their prime.

Mindcrime
Justice
Seventh Son
Actually the 1st 2 aren't that far apart but by enter key was stuck.
And I really don't know Seventh Son all that well but Maiden never clicked with me. Although I do have tremendous respect for them.
