Title: Yeah, Star Wars was good. But it isn't what made 1977 so good.

I’ve never seen that movie.

And my life also has no meaning.

Coincidence?

Well, we've also never met in person.  I would say that either or both could be contributing factors.

Legendary film. I spent my whole 6th grade year quoting it.

Annie Hall, Cet Obscur Objet Du Désir, Suspiria, Equus, Eraserhead?

Great flick. Watch it once a year. Jackie Gleason was a comedy master. Reed's soundtrack was great. Hal Needham's stunts were top notch. Sally Field was at her cutest. Despite being generally pretty crappy, that car is quite possibly the coolest ever created. Everything about that flick was excellent.

77 also had Close Encounters and The Spy Who LOved me going for it.

I can't go to Youtube at the office, but I take it we're talking about Smokey and the Bandit.

I can't remember when I saw that movie.  Might not have been for a couple years after, but it felt like something taboo for no-more-than-13yo me.  The scene where Sally Field flips off Jackie Gleason is one that's forever embedded on my memory.  I seem to recall some boobage too.

I have a feeling if I watched it now, the nostalgia would be ruined.

Another classic from that year is Slapshot.

Only Burt Reynolds (and maybe Tom Selleck) can wear mustaches like that and still be cool.  :metal

Watched this movie many times through my youth.

James Garner did it better than either.

(And Robards was no slouch)

Those are more 'gentlemanly' mustaches than your typical 1970s mustache. A guy in a 1970's mustache is going to hit on your date at the bar. A guy in a Robards or Garner mustache is more likely to offer to buy the next round, and invite us to his table to discuss their experiences in the last war.

And two very fine actors as well.

And I know the critics love his films, but goddamn Woody Allen films are the most boring, unfunny pieces of crap I've ever sat (slept) through.

They are certainly more gentlemanly than Selleck's. Burt's was generally neatly groomed and usually looked quite a bit like what Garner's sporting in Hour of the Gun. Sometimes he let it curl down a bit more.

And to his credit, Burt looks like he died last year but the stache still looks fantastic. I suspect it's what's keeping him alive.

On the subject of Burt Reynolds, I've been watching the SNL Celebrity Jeopardy! sketches lately.  Some of the funniest stuff ever to appear on network television!  "Why don'tcha give me Ape Tit for $200?"

Right, but like, you didn't call out anybody else who talked about other '77 flicks. Hence the confusion.

(aside: Also, those Celebrity Jeopardy skits are amazing. Not all are winners (I had to search very hard to find the 13 I have, and most are pretty bad quality - might be missing one or two, even) - but there's one, I think it was the anniversary show from some years ago, where they talk about peeing your name in the snow, and Connery says, "It was your mother's handwriting!"  :lol :lol)

I didn't "call out" anybody at all.  But that one post was just so out of nowhere that I couldn't not respond.

No.  I like you too much.  I'll just pity you for being misguided.  Now go listen to that other band I linked in the thread.

I dunno Bosky...  In my world as a 14 year old in '77 Star Wars was pretty much the highlight.  With Close Encounters not far behind.  Now, I did love Smokey and The Bandit, but not near as much as the other two masterpieces!

I think we really need Alice in Chains to do a grunge version of that song.
